J. E. Sumerau’s latest fiction novel Palmetto Rose tells the story of Kid, a bi+, gender fluid twenty-something, living with grief for their romantic partner, alongside their chosen family of LGBTQIA+ friends. This review looks at how Sumerau’s writing presents complex concepts, research, and lived experience for an academic and wider audience.

The article is devoted to the literary heritage of Oles Ulianenko, who was virtually the only national author addressing LGBTQIA+ subject matter. The corporal-mimetic method was applied to analyze fiction works, which enabled us to draw a number of meaningful conclusions. On the one hand, LGBTQIA+ themes are typologically represented by a variety of images which are characterized by both an ironic dimension and dramatic pathos, interpreted not in ethical but in aesthetic terms. On the other hand, Oles Ulianenko was the first to shift homosexuality into the visible realm, and to represent the “splendors and miseries” (H. de Balzac) of homoeroticism to Ukrainian society; who, with his sexualized, homosexualized and lesbian narrative of his literary works attempted to speak of a future when his country would overcome the lack of social and sexual freedom.

The photographic records show Uhura at the pride commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising (the historic moment that started a series of protests for the civil rights of LGBTQIA+ people in 1969). Uhura's presence and her performance symbolize a manifesto, carrying Jorge Lafond and Marsha P. Like other successful genre shows, Wynonna Earp features a strong female lead character. Wynonna, however, is so much more than a ‘girl with a big ass gun’. In this case study of Emily Andras, I explore how women-centred writing and Andras’s engagement with fans, transformed Wynonna Earp from an overly sexualized comic book character, to a feminist icon, layered with nuance and breaking gender norms faster than revenants can make their peace. Andras’s leadership, her inclusion of LGBTQIA representation and refusal to succumb to the ‘bury your gays’ trope, also helped amass a passionate, loyal fan base that successfully lobbied producers for a fourth season after the show faced cancellation. The success of Wynonna Earp and the ‘Fight for Wynonna’, bolsters the legitimacy of women-led genre shows, women showrunners and producers, and the largely women-identified fan base, who have long loved science fiction, but have not felt accurately represented in male-centric products. Through qualitative analysis of interviews with Andras and Wynonna Earp fans, this article shows how Andras’s voice as screenwriter, leadership as showrunner, and engagement with fans on social media, demonstrates respect for fans as active and valued media partners, rather than market to be exploited.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the needs of potential end-users of a database dedicated to Swedish lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) literature (e.g. prose, poetry, drama, graphic novels/comics, and illustrated books), in order to inform the development of a database, search interface functionalities, and an LGBTQI thesaurus for fiction.Design/methodology/approachA web questionnaire was distributed in autumn 2021 to potential end-users. The questions covered people's reasons for reading LGBTQI fiction, ways of finding LGBTQI fiction, experience of searching for LGBTQI fiction, usual search elements applied, latest search for LGBTQI fiction, desired subjects to search for, and ideal search functionalities.FindingsThe 101 completed questionnaires showed that most respondents found relevant literature through social media or friends and that most obtained copies of literature from a library. Regarding desirable search functionalities, most respondents would like to see suggestions for related terms to support broader search results (i.e. higher recall). Many also wanted search support that would enable retrieving more specific results based on narrower terms when too many results are retrieved (i.e. higher precision). Over half would also appreciate the option to browse by hierarchically arranged subjects.Originality/valueThis study is the first to show how readers of LGBTQI fiction in Sweden search for and obtain relevant literature. The authors have identified end-user needs that can inform the development of a new database and a thesaurus dedicated to LGBTQI fiction.

PurposeThis article aims to help ensure high-quality subject access to Swedish lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersexual (LGBTQI) fiction, and aims to identify challenges that librarians consider important to address, on behalf of themselves and end users.Design/methodology/approachA web-based questionnaire comprising 35 closed and open questions, 22 of which were required, was sent via online channels in January 2022. By the survey closing date, 20 March 2022, 82 responses had been received. The study was intended to complement an earlier study targeting end users.FindingsBoth this study of librarians and the previous study of end users have painted a dismal image of online search services when it comes to searching for LGBTQI fiction. The need to consult different channels (e.g. social media, library catalogues and friends), the inability to search more specifically than for the broad LGBTQI category and suboptimal search interfaces were among the commonly reported issues. The results of these studies are used to inform the development of a dedicated Swedish LGBTQI fiction database with an online search interface.Originality/valueThe subject searching of fiction via online services is usually limited to genre with facets for time and place, while users are often seeking characteristics such as pacing, characterization, storyline, frame/setting, tone and language/style. LGBTQI fiction is even more challenging to search because indexing practices are not really being standardized or disseminated worldwide. This study helps address this important gap, in both research and practical applications.

This article examines Caitlín R. Kiernan’s writing for the DC/Vertigo comic series The Dreaming, a spin-off of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman. It places Kiernan’s writing for the series in the wider context of both her prose fictional writings and representations of LGBTQI+ characters in American comics. It uses Moira Weigel’s concept of “sadomodernism” to characterize Kiernan’s writings, demonstrating how Kiernan’s use of this mode in The Dreaming anticipated signature characteristics of her later fictions. Close reading of selected excerpts from the published comics, as well as Kiernan’s scripts, emails, and editorial remarks alongside the work of queer and trans theorists, including Judith Butler and Jack Halberstam, reveal how groundbreaking Kiernan’s unsettling work with the series was and remains.

The following is a collection of five short stories set in regions familiar to me: “Dewberry Park,” “YouLead,” and “The Color Violet” in Indiana; “Mens Rea” in Kentucky; and “Tory Ride” in Cambodia. Gay identity plays a role in many of these stories, and other themes explored include family, region, socioeconomics, gender, mentality, and change. These stories are concerned with people on the brink, failing and surviving all the same. Some of them are intended to weigh, and some to satirize. I hope they all nick their readers.

abstract: LGBTQ research in music education has become more available and accepted in the past ten years. LGBTQ studies in music education have focused on how gay and lesbian music educators negotiate their identities, the role of music education in the lives of transgender students, and the inclusion of LGBTQ issues in music teacher education programs. Studies have been limited to a singular content experience, such as gay vocal music educators or lesbian band directors. Additionally, studies have not explored multiple generations of LGBTQ music educators. The purpose of this study was to explore the lives as lived of six K-12 music teachers. Six individuals, from various career points, various generations, and various career paths shared their stories with me. To guide my analysis, I considered the following questions: • How do lesbian and gay music educators describe their sexual identity and professional identity? • How do gay and lesbian music educators negotiate the tensions between these identities? • What internal and external factors influence these negotiations? • What are the similarities and differences among the participants of different generations? Two large emerged from the analysis that provided a better understanding of the participants’ lives: finding sexual identity and finding professional identity. Within those themes, smaller sub-themes helped to better understand how the participants came to understand their sexuality and professional identity. External factors such as social and family support, religion, and cultural and generational movements influenced the ways in which the participants came to understand their sexual identity. Participants desired to be seen first as a competent music teacher, but also understood that they could have an impact on a student as a gay or lesbian role model or mentor. Sexual identity and professional identity did not function as separate constructs; rather they were interwoven throughout these lesbian and gay music educator’s self-identities. In order to connect the reader with the participants, I engaged in a creative non-fiction writing process to (re)tell participant’s stories. Each story is unique and crafted in a way that the participant’s voice is privileged over my own. The stories come from the conversations and journal entries that the participants shared with me. The purpose of the stories is to provide the reader with a contextual understanding of each participant’s life, and to offer some considerations for ways in which we can engage with and support our lesbian and gay music educator colleagues. This paper does not end with a tidy conclusion, but rather more questions and provocations that will continue the conversations. I hope this document will encourage thoughtful and critical conversations in the music education profession to help us move us forward to a place that is more empathetic, socially-just, and equitable.

The purpose of this study is to examine the stocks of young adult and children’s literature collections with LGBTQ content made available in Québec public libraries to determine whether the population is sufficiently provided for, regardless of the location and size of the city or town where they live. To carry out this research project, we used the checklist evaluation method. Collections from a sample of 41 municipal public libraries were thus examined, using a checklist of 38 young adult and children’s literature titles with LGBTQ content, published from 2003 to 2018. The collected data was subjected to statistical analysis. As with previous studies of Canadian and American public library collections, this research has shown that the level of presence of young adult and children’s literature with LGBTQ content varies considerably in all libraries, and that the size of populations, the size of collections and the budgets for printed books can’t explain all the fluctuations. Data analysis also revealed that novels with LGBTQ content for teenagers were much more likely to be held in collections than early readers’ novels and children’s picture books. The results have also shown that male homosexuality as a theme is well represented in the collections, while same sex parenthood is significantly underrepresented. However, according to the data, the picture books for children on the topic of same-sex parenthood are exactly the type of material which was the most borrowed in the sampled libraries at the time of the study. This exploratory study alone does not entirely support the conclusion that collections of young adult and children’s literature with LGBTQ content in Québec public libraries are sufficient and appropriate. However, comparing results from this research to those from other researches suggests that, overall, Quebec libraries seem to be doing well in this regard.

AbstractIn their respective memoirs Stuck in the Middle with You: A Memoir of Parenting in Three Genders (2013) and How We Do Family: From Adoption to Trans Pregnancy, What We Learned About Love and LGBTQ Parenthood (2021), Jennifer Finney Boylan and Trystan Reese illuminate how mother and father are concepts that are varied, mutable, and fluid. Boylan, a university professor at Colby College in Maine and best-selling author, reveals that she is a transgender woman, formerly a husband in a long-term marriage, and father of two. Boylan writes from her position as a second mother to her children, and as the still-married partner of Deirdre Boylan. Reese, a social justice advocate, is a transgender man who not only adopted two children with his husband, Biff Chaplow, but who also gave birth to their biological baby. In my analysis herein, I argue that through narratives that conflate the conventional and the radical, Boylan and Reese normalize trans parenthood while queering normativity. Drawing on scholarship from queer, maternal, and life writing studies, and foregrounding the themes of transitioning, reproduction, and childrearing, I showcase how Boylan and Reese use their memoirs to open up vital spaces for new and inclusive notions of family.

Abstract This chapter investigates the growth and diversification of the romance genre since the mass-market romance first hit supermarket shelves in the 1970s. In the decades since, the more than billion-dollar-a-year industry has remained the most commercially successful and widely read genre of popular fiction. With the advent of indie publishing, self-publishing, and diversification of lines that even mainstream publishers like Harlequin or Avon offer, “Romance-landia” has become one of genre fiction’s most diverse categories. The chapter investigates such subgenres as historical romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, “baby love” fictions, paranormal romance, erotic romance, Christian evangelical romance, and LGBTQ romance. The chapter concludes by considering the ways that the Internet and social media are changing the way romance readers and writers in all subgenres interact.

Abstract This chapter argues that the “initialism” represented by the label “LGBTQ Novel” is a crucial context for an understanding of queer fiction. Given that most Americans continue to believe in a heterosexual/homosexual binary, the term LGBTQ emerged to offset not only that binary construction, but also the exclusivities inherent in the phrase gay and lesbian. This initialism remains an inadequate catchall, because it presumes stability across sexualities and genders that, as the genre of queer fiction demonstrates, is not always accurate nor always desired. The chapter examines the ongoing strains within disparate LGBTQ communities as they developed, converged, and at times splintered from each other on and off the page. In the 1970s, the US lesbian novel distinguished itself from the US gay novel. Flourishing in the last decade of the twentieth century, the trans novel thinks itself a departure from both.

In the canon, Star Trek: Discovery seamlessly joins the rank of its predecessors in questioning power and monoglossia. In the “fanon,” contemporary fan writers have done the same and continue the tradition of political fan fictions in Star Trek, as this chapter aims to show. While there certainly are many escapist stories with little, if any, political relevance, a significant part of the stories actively engages in contemporary debates and movements surrounding ethics and science, war trauma, and LGBTQ representation. To prove its claim, the chapter begins with a brief overview over the relevance of socio-political discourses in Star Trek Discovery. These discourses are then compared to political criticism and discussion in Discovery fan fiction. To make this viable, the chapter will analyse a sample of fan fictions published on the two main platforms fanfiction.net and archiveofourown.com. Ultimately, this chapter shows that the importance of socio-political debates is just as relevant in the Discovery “fanon” as in the Discovery canon. Certainly, Star Trek’s degree of political involvement has always been part of the franchise’s allure and Star Trek: Discovery continues this tradition well into the 21st century – and takes its fans with it to boldly discuss what many fans have discussed before.

Abstract This chapter discusses how lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals relate to media personae, focusing on the critical value of parasocial relationships (PSRs) with LGBTQ media personae for identity development, sense of belongingness, and validation. LGBTQ media users may be particularly prone to PSRs with LGBTQ media personae as compensation for offline, face-to-face social support from LGBTQ others. The chapter reviews what is known about the representation of LGBTQ fictional characters and celebrities in media, investigates the application of theory to LGBTQ PSRs, and details the function of social media influencers as specific media personae likely to attract LGBTQ audiences. Unanswered questions about the development and effects of PSRs among LGBTQ media users conclude this chapter.

Beginning in the 1970s, in her Japanese science-fiction manga Hagio Moto innovates a gender-fluid world within which readers may imagine gender and sexuality unconstrained by norms that were elsewhere persistent in Japan since the Meiji period. In her comics’ futuristic arena of possibility, Hagio associates trans-ness, gender fluidity, and androgyny with liberation and the transcendence of restrictive categories and social forms and hierarchies that sustain them. Sexuality, normative pregnancy, coital roles, monogamy, polyamory, cognitive perception, and anatomical specificity and differentiation are all subjects of metamorphosis or expansion with implications even for the stability of national or cultural boundaries. Hagio’s characters discover a queer state of betweenness with a radically transformative potential.

This chapter presents the context and consequences of representational harms facing LGBTQ individuals and communities through the old and newer digital media logics of the hybrid media ecosystem. The chapter lays out the argument of the book and the evidence to support it; that representational harms – harms that ignore, criticize or blame minority communities, and in doing so, reinforce inequity – are a form of information warfare. This warfare is manifested through the manufacture of an imagined LGBTQ enemy, and the rationalization, normalization and monetization of stigma-driven marginalization based on that fiction. The transformation of cultural production through digital media platforms has restructured the terms by which culture is distributed and paid for. This transformation has revealed the workings of stigma-derived anti-LGBTQ economic and political purchase through the hybrid media ecosystem. The chapter identifies digiqueer criminology as an overarching framework through which to articulate the relationship between LGBTQ agency, and the technostructural forces that constrain or enable LGBTQ expression. In doing so, the chapter identifies the role of meaning making through knowledge production processes, the material value of identity, and its impact on securing LGBTQ relationship, conduct and expression rights. The chapter provides a summary of the chapters in the book.

Abstract This chapter traces the connection between literary form and the writing of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) bodies, desires, and issues in the Latin American novel. Divided into two sections, the text first provides the reader with a broad overview of the state of the LGBTQ novel in Latin America, identifying key texts and concepts spanning from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Then, the chapter proceeds to examine a wide assortment of novels through specific groupings of discrete criteria, including the confessional monologue, the musical novel, new historical fiction, and the neofantastic novel. In this second section, the chapter studies the content of individual texts, but also teases out connections to their particular form.

This chapter utilises Carla Freccero’s Queer/Early/Modern as a theoretical lens through which to inspect queer spectrality in late twentieth and early twenty-first ghost stories. The author conducts in-depth readings of Jeannine Allard’s Légende: The Story of Philippa and Aurelie (1984), Rebecca S. Buck’s Ghosts of Winter (2011), Jameson Currier’s short story, ‘The Country House’(2007), and Rosie Garland’s The Night Brother (2017). The tales in this chapter all feature contemporary queer characters who are haunted by queer ghosts from the past, which is a theme found in many LGBTQIA2+ Gothic literary works post-1969. The non-linear feature of ‘queer time’ ala Jack Halberstam, illustrates both a juxtaposition to and a reckoning with the often closeted and violent past experienced by queer and trans people with contemporary queer and trans people who are either fully out of the closet or who are still struggling with their identity and place in a heteronormative and cisnormative world. The author intertwines the queer spectral with the queer historiographical which opens up new avenues through which to understand queer literature and queer history.

This paper summarizes the project Queerlit: Metadata and Searchability for LGBTQ+ Literary Heritage 2020-2023 and discusses some challenges in the development of this resource. The Queerlit project consist of four parts: 1. Creating a bibliography of Swedish fiction with LGBTQI themes 2. Creating a Swedish thesaurus (QLIT), adapted from the of the linked open data thesaurus Homosaurus 3. Assigning all material in the bibliography with subject headings from QLIT. 4. A web user interface for searching the material All four parts are integrated with the Swedish union catalog, Libris, making the results of the project available for all under a CC0 license. QLIT is the first external thesaurus integrated in the linked open data framework used in the technical platform of Libris, XL. The bibliography spans from rune stones from the 7th century to recently published fiction. When applying subject headings for the material both general aspects of the work and specific LGBTQI topics are described, making this the most comprehensive retrospective indexing project of Swedish literature to date. The underlying knowledge organization is made a prominent method of interacting with the search interface, which is empirically designed around the needs of various user groups.
