Over the past few years the Montreal World Film Festival has continued to increase its programming of films by African directors. The 1991 edition, which ran from August 22-September 2, was certainly no exception. I happened to turn on the television to the French station and caught Société Radio Canada’s “official” review of Laafi by Pierre Yameogo of Burkina Faso. The reviewers, Chantal Jolis and René Homier-Roy, dismissed Yameogo’s portrayal of a current African problem—braindrain—as weak in terms of artistic production. For example, they both agreed that Laafi had too many “monotonous moments.” Homier-Roy, in particular, seemed completely oblivious to the colonizing attitude he displayed when he spoke of how the film illustrated the “petit-nègre” (a phrase I have rarely heard spoken since I left France in 1987) side of Africans. He then proceeded to “legitimize” the comment by shrugging his shoulders and declaring, “It’s the Africans who are showing it this time, not us.” Finally, the reviewers decided that African films are really only useful for their “anthropological” information.

In 1977, after studying theatre together at university, Annie Gascon, Danielle Hotte, and Claude Poissant founded le Théâtre Petit à Petit. With shoe-string budgets and minimal facilities, they explored a number of theatrical styles, doing everything petit à petit or little by little. Today the company is run collaboratively by Marie-France Bruyère, François Camirand, René Richard Cyr, Annie Gascon, Claude Poissant, and Denis Roy, and is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a remarkable season of both revival productions like Claude Poissant’s Ce qui reste du désir and new work like Fantômes, Concert-Fantôme. It has also been getting a lot of attention because of its hit production of Michel Marc Bouchard’s Les feluettes, directed by André Brassard as a co-production with the National Arts Centre / Centre National des Arts.

Résumé Les recueils d'études littéraires publies par Marcel Dugas entre 1919 (Apologies,) et 1942 (Approches,) constituent une sorte d'anti-manuel de la littérature canadienne-française qui, à ¡'encontre des manuels de. l'abbé Camille Roy, adopte une perspective résolument moderniste. La présente étude montre comment l'oeuvre de Dugas s'inscrit sous le double signe de la fidélité et de la contradiction. Issu d’une famille de Touraine, fils d’un horloger du roi réputé, Julien-David Le Roy (1724-1803) fut le grand découvreur des antiquités de la Grèce au xviiie siècle, alors sous le joug turc. Membre des Académies royales d’Architecture et des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, il publia en 1757 : Ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce (…), ouvrage fondamental à l’origine du goût grec de la seconde moitié du siècle. Une correspondance avec Marc-René de Voyer d’Argenson, marquis de Voyer (1722-1782), l’un des mécènes les plus influents de son temps, proche des Orléans, retrouvée dans le fonds d’Argenson de l’université de Poitiers en 2013, nous révèle la véritable personnalité de cette grande figure des arts, voire des sciences, du xviiie siècle. Au-delà de la carrière et de l’activité de l’académicien, mieux connues depuis les travaux de Christopher Drew Armstrong, c’est une facette inédite du personnage qui apparait dans ses trente-deux missives, rédigées entre 1766 et 1777 : l’homme, ses angoisses, ses attentes, son goût de la politique, du théâtre et des lettres, son activité de conseiller artistique auprès du marquis, tant à Paris qu’à son domaine des Ormes en Touraine, ses liens avec les architectes Chambers, De Wailly (notamment dans la fameuse affaire de la nomination de celui-ci à l’Académie d’Architecture en 1767), et bien d’autres personnalités du temps. Beyond the career and activity of the academician, better known since the works of Christopher Drew Armstrong, it is a new facet of the character that appears in his thirty-two missives, written between 1766 and 1777 : the man, his anxieties, his expectations, his taste for politics, theatre and letters, his activity as artistic advisor to the Marquis, both in Paris and in his domain of the Ormes in Touraine, his relationships with the architects Chambers, De Wailly (notably in the famous affair of his appointment to the Academy of Architecture in 1767), and many other personalities of the time. Above all, there appears an unknown side : his perfect knowledge of England at point of spying its coasts for the French monarchy. In 1966, René Le Roy (1898-1985) and his student Claude Dorgeuille co-authored Traité de la flûte historique, technique et pedagogique. This treatise presents the culmination of Le Roy's career as a renowned performer and teacher in both Europe and North America. His approach to the study of music, as presented in the method, diverges from traditional French training, instructing teachers to compose exercises specific to the needs of the student and by using repertoire as source material. Claude Dorgeuille writes of the method, "...the Traité gives an outline analysis of the principal elements of technique, thus allowing exercises to be devised as appropriate to the needs of the individual." Using Le Roy's treatise, I demonstrate the application of his teaching to Jacques Ibert's Deux stèles orientées pour voix et flûte (1925), a work dedicated to and premiered by Le Roy, through the creation of individual exercises tailored to preparation of Ibert's work.

En 1922, le flûtiste René Le Roy eut l'idée de créer une formation chambriste dont l'effectif instrumental atypique (flûte, harpe et trio à cordes) n'est pas sans rappeler celui de la Sonate pour flûte alto et harpe de Debussy qu'il affectionnait particulièrement. Le Quintette Instrumental de Paris poursuit une intense carrière musicale jusqu'en 1940, grâce à l'investissement et à la rigueur de ses membres originels : Marcel Grandjany puis Pierre Jamet à la harpe, René Bas au violon, Pierre Grout à l'alto et Roger Boulmé au violoncelle. Le groupe est dissous durant la guerre, à la suite du départ de René Le Roy pour l'Amérique et de la mort au combat de Roger Boulmé. Le Quintette se reforme en 1944, sous l'impulsion de son harpiste dont il portera le nom. À la séparation définitive de l'ensemble en 1958, le Quintette Pierre Jamet trouve un nouvel élan en la personne de Marie-Claire Jamet, fille de Pierre Jamet, et de son mari le flûtiste Christian Lardé. Dans une période de grands bouleversements géopolitiques, l'Association Française d'Action Artistique (A.F.A.A.), qui œuvre pour la promotion de la musique française à l'étranger, favorise grandement le déploiement de la carrière du Quintette en Europe et en Amérique. À ce titre, les deux tournées américaines réalisées en 1934 et 1935 s'érigent comme un modèle de rayonnement artistique. Enfin, la troisième partie aborde spécifiquement l'esthétique du répertoire en quintette progressivement constitué entre 1923 et 1938, et qui comprend près d'une trentaine d'œuvres composées à l'intention du Quintette Instrumental de Paris. In 1922, the flutist René Le Roy had the idea of creating a chamber ensemble with an atypical combination of instruments (flute, harp and string trio) which recalls Debussy's Sonate pour flute, alto et harpe that he was particularly fond of. The Quintette Instrumental de Paris had a well-filled musical career until 1940, thanks to the dedication and rigour of its founder members: Marcel Grandjany, and then Pierre Jamet on the harp, René Bas on the violin, Pierre Grout on the viola and Roger Boulmé on the cello. The ensemble was disbanded during the war, when René le Roy left for America, and Roger Boulmé was killed in action. In 1944, the harpist Pierre Jamet re- formed the quintet, which now bears his name. When the group finally split up in 1958, the Pierre Jamet Quintet was given a new lease of life by Marie-Claire Jamet, Pierre Jamet's daughter, and her husband, the flutist Christian Lardé. This thesis, which focusses on the ensemble's first period of activity (1922-1940), sets out to examine how the group managed to get established and sustain its activity, even though it did not belong to any chamber music tradition and had no pre-existing repertoire. The players turned to contemporary composers in order to gradually enrich their repertoire. The first part sets out to reconstruct the musical trajectory of the ensemble, in the light of documentary evidence scarcely used until now., and to assess its place in the musical life of its time. The ensemble benefited from a favourable historical context for the practice of chamber music, and it attracted composers who were interested in the expressive potential of this new combination of instruments. The second part looks at the career strategies implemented by the ensemble itself to promote its activities in France and abroad. This provides an opportunity to reconsider the figure of the impresario who, like Marcel de Valmalète, exerted an ever-growing influence on French musical life. In this period of great geopolitical upheaval, the Association Française d'Action Artistique (A.F.A.A.), which promoted French music abroad, greatly encouraged the Quintet's career in Europe and America. This is perfectly illustrated by the two American tours in 1934 and 1935. Nadia Boulanger, who was close to René Le Roy and more particularly to Pierre Jamet, acted as an intermediary to facilitate the Quintet's introduction into the New York musical milieu. The concert programme, which had also been restructured, was based on the principle of alternating pieces for different sized groups, endeavouring to give pride of place to little-known pages from the Baroque repertoire and to present the latest works by contemporary composers.In order to assess the particular nature of the Quintet's interpretative repertoire, it is compared with that of other groups from the same period, in particular the Trio Cortot-Thibaud-Casals, the Trio Pasquier and the Quatuor Calvet, which were also popular at the time. Finally, the third part deals specifically with the aesthetics of the quintet as it progressed between 1923 and 1938, including some thirty works composed for the Quintette Instrumental de Paris. A more restricted corpus comprising the ten quintets which best exemplify their repertoire (Jongen, Roussel, d'Indy, Pierné, Cras, Ropartz, Schmitt, Malipiero and Françaix) is the focus of an in-depth analysis of the writing and management of this particular combination of instruments. Le procès de René d'Alençon (1481-1483) est celui d'un prince du Sang et seigneur apanagiste. Il était le fils du duc Jean d'Alençon par deux fois condamné à mort pour trahison et dont la condamnation fut à chaque fois commuée en emprisonnement. La succession de son père au duché d'Alençon fut l'objet principal des démêlés entre René et Louis XI. Ce dernier le fit arrêter avant qu'il ne s'enfuie en Bretagne et le fit emprisonner à Chinon où il fut interrogé par une commission royale. Il fut ensuite transféré à Vincennes pour être jugé par le Parlement de Paris. Ce dernier ne le trouva pas coupable de crime de lèse-majesté et le condamna à une peine mineure au grand mécontentement du Roi. Dernier épisode de la lutte de Louis XI contre les grands féodaux, ce procès est un témoignage sur la fin du règne et sur les relations difficiles du Roi avec le Parlement. Le compte-rendu du procès fait l'objet d'une transcription qui constitue le volume II de la présente thèse
The trial of René d'Alençon (1481-1483) is the trial of a prince of the Blood and apanagist. He was the son of Jean, duke of Alençon, twice condemned to death and twice his condemnation was changed to imprisonment. The succession of his father to the duchy of Alençon was the main matter of the dispute between René and Louis XI. This latter ordered René to be arrested before he escaped to Brittany and made him imprisoned at Chinon where he was questioned by a royal commission. Then he was transfered to Vincennes for his trial by the Parliament of Paris. This one did not find him guilty of crime of lese-majesty. So he was condemned at a minor punishment at the great displeasure of the king. Last episode of the struggle of Louis XI against his high vassals, this trial is the testimony about the last years of his reign and of the difficult relationship between the king and the Parliament. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’analyser les contributions de Clément Colson à la science économique dans le but de mieux connaître sa pensée, de mieux connaître l’École libérale française au début du XXème siècle, d’étudier l’influence qu’a pu avoir cet auteur sur ses principaux élèves, Divisia, Roy et Rueff, et d’évaluer l’actualité de certaines de ses recommandations.Le premier chapitre montre quels sont les apports théoriques de Colson à la science économique.Pour ses élèves, son principal apport serait la théorie de la détermination conjointe du salaire et du taux d’intérêt. Nous montrerons que cette théorie est proche de la règle de gestion optimale en microéconomie attribuée à Clark ; nous verrons alors que l’on peut parler de découverte multiple.Colson est également intéressant au point de vue de la méthode utilisée. Nous verrons alors qu’il utilise les statistiques et les mathématiques dans ses développements : il est à l’origine d’une évaluation pionnière du revenu de la France, son enseignement impulse le calcul économique, il peut être considéré comme un précurseur de l’économétrie en France. Le deuxième chapitre montre que Colson développe la méthode de tarification des voies de communication exploitées en monopole de Jules Dupuit en proposant des moyens pratiques de révélation des préférences. Nous verrons également que cette théorie est reprise de nos jours avec le Yield Management et par les compagnies aériennes à bas coûts. Le troisième chapitre a pour but de voir comment Colson prend en compte la question sociale. Nous verrons qu’il défend une intervention de l’État plus importante que d’autres économistes libéraux afin d’éviter que les ouvriers ne se tournent vers le socialisme. Le quatrième chapitre étudie l’intervention de l’État préconisée par Colson dans le domaine des chemins de fer. Nous verrons que dans ce domaine où l’État est très présent, l’auteur souhaite le limiter. Il préfère ainsi la concession à la régie et souhaite la construction de nouvelles lignes uniquement si elles sont rentables. Nous verrons qu’à nouveau, la crainte du socialisme n’est pas étrangère à ses positions. Sur chacun des thèmes, nous verrons que Colson accorde à la pratique une place importante. Au niveau théorique tout part de l’observation et se termine par l’observation, au niveau pratique il est marqué par les préoccupations de son époque
The object of this dissertation is to analyse the contributions of Clément Colson to the economics in order to be better acquainted with his thought, with the French Liberal School at the beginning of the 20th century, to see the influence he had on his main students, Divisia, Roy and Rueff, and to evaluate the actuality of his recomandations. The first chapter develops the Colson’s theoretical contributions.For his students, his main contribution would be the theory of the joint setting of wage and of the interest rate. We will explain this theory is close to the optimal management rule in microeconomics attributed to Clark; we will see we can speak then about multiple discovery.Colson is interesting too from the point of view of the method used. We will see he uses statistics and mathematics in his developments: he makes one of the first assesments of the French income, his lectures develop economics calculus, he can be seen as a precursor of econometrics in France. The second chapter shows that Colson develops the Jules Dupuit pricing method for means of communications exploited by a monopoly by proposing practical way of preferences revelation. We will show too that this theory is used nowadays with the Yield Management and by airline lowcost companies.The third chapter has for purpose to see how Colson takes into account the social question. We will see he argues for a more important State intervention than other liberal economists in order to avoid workers to turn to socialism. The fourth chapter is devoted to the State intervention recommended by Colson in the field of railways. We will see that in this field in which the State is very present, the author wishes to limit it. Charge d'aller enseigner le message du fils du fils de dieu aux noirs d'afrique, le personnage pouvait-il trouver les conditions appropriees a une action independante et desinteressee sans se compromettre avec le pouvoir colonial ? notre enquete montre plutot que le personnage oeuvrait tout aussi bien pour l'eglise que pour sa patrie, contrairement a l'esprit de sa mission. Or, le systeme colonial qui s'appuie sur un regime d'exception, organise l'asservissement et l'exploitation du colonise dont il nie le patrimoine culturel et philosophique. Dans ce contexte social et historique ou l'arbitraire est consubstanciel a l'action menee par le colonisateur, l'imbrication du religieux et du politique, ou mieux encore, la collusion de fait entre le clerge missionnaire et l'administration offre a mongo beti et rene philombe des raisons de contester (vivement) le caractere desinteresse de l'apostolat. Dans les trois romans, le personnage du missionnaire est traite de telle maniere qu'il apparait comme un rouage du systeme colonial. Construction and operating costs of residential buildings are important. Because, it can help designers, builders, owners, and renters make informed decisions about where and what to buy or rent. One of the most significant operating costs of residences is energy cost. More specifically, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning account for as much as 35% of the overall energy consumption of buildings in the world. Thus, the problem that this research paper addresses is the decision trade-off of construction costs vs. operating costs. Therefore, this paper aims to perform a techno-economic analysis of exterior residential wall-type alternatives in a warm-humid climate. The research followed a quantitative methodology using a virtual case study with multi-objective analysis. The results of this study show the significant importance of the building’s infiltration on the operational savings and the return on investment (ROI) of the different types of exterior residential walls. and emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to energy conservation regulations. The novelty of this study is the emphasis on the importance of infiltration in pre-construction decision-making. The broader impact of this result is that the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and similar standards could be revised to reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced during energy generation

In the past decades, Hungarian critics, researchers, teachers acting in the universe of literature have learned to respect Theory. In the academic world and in elite criticism, theoretical reason has gained substantive importance, poststructuralist catechism has guided understanding as an indispensable guide, and it has seemed self-evident that the path to authentic literary understanding leads through theory. Under these circumstances, a multi-perspective, reflective examination of theory and an account of its problematic aspects have not taken place. Yet, a similar debate had already taken place in American literary studies in the 1980s, and György Poszler’s 1988 monograph sharply criticized Hegel’s and György Lukács’s philosophical aesthetics. (Conservative philosophers Edmund Burke, Tamás Molnár, Roger Scruton, and others are also distrustful of system creation and consider as problematic those attitudes of thought that “can only accept answers formulated within the framework of an elaborate system.”) It is also timely to open a debate on the validity of understanding the “Big Theoretical Bang”. All the more so because several internationally renowned European and American philosophers, linguists, and literary scholars (René Wellek, M. H. Abrams, Tzvetan Todorov, John Searle, Geoffrey Galt Harpham, Roy Harris, Martha Nussbaum) have contributed comprehensive perspectives to criticism. The lecture will first build on their well-established critical perspectives, then will also discuss the spread of poststructuralism in Hungary, and finally, reflecting on the raison d’être of Theory and literary theory, it will evoke endeavours of literary theory which seek to preserve moderation and prudence as fundamental values, to avoid substantive fixations, to transcend one-sided confrontations and strive for a verifying criticism of concepts, while they attempt at unifying deduction with induction, and regard the task, function, and vocation of theory as assisting the understanding of literature.

Abstract Single crystal (SX) nickel-base superalloys have been extensively used for the highest temperature gas turbines blades. In power generation turbines, these alloys are often exposed to high temperatures and stresses for extended periods of time and microstructural evolution occurs. Rejuvenation heat treatments and numerous repair methods can be successfully utilized to extend the life of components manufactured from SX alloys. These repair methods may include surface modifications such as shot-peening and welding along with subsequent heat-treatments. These repair processes may lead to recrystallization in the SX materials, and the presence and extent of grain boundaries can have deleterious effects on local high-temperature mechanical properties. The research in this paper focuses on characterization methods for evaluating recrystallization in SX nickel-base superalloys during the repair process. Micro hardness mapping, micro x-ray fluorescence (μXRF) and several different scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tools were used to evaluate recrystallization and microstructural features in both weld repairs and shot peened samples subjected to various heat-treatments. Simulated weld repairs consisted of both SX castings in Rene N4 and Rene N5 that were welded with Haynes 230 and Rene 80 filler metals using a gas tungsten arch welding process. The effect of recrystallization from shot peening was also evaluated on both alloys. Additionally, various samples were given either a full solution, partial solution or stress relief heat treatment to evaluate microstructural changes which may be used to the repair/rejuvenation process. The findings in this research show that several different characterization tools can be effectively used to evaluate recrystallization in SX nickel-base superalloys. Micro hardness and μXRF mapping showed local changes in hardness and chemical composition across the weld metal, heat affected zone and base metal as a function of weld metal selection. Electron backscattered diffraction SEM based techniques was particularly effective in identifying changes in recrystallization due to various processing methods. The research shows that filler metal selection, shot-peening control, and heat-treatment conditions all need to be carefully considered in the development of repair processes to minimize recrystallization effects.

A solar collector/receiver system for a full-spectrum solar energy system is being designed by a research team lead by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Nevada, Reno. [1,2] This solar energy system is unique in that it utilizes the majority of the solar spectrum by splitting the infrared (IR) and visible energy for two different end uses. The visible light will be used for day lighting and the IR energy for electrical power generation. This paper is concerned with the optics that will provide uniform irradiance of the IR energy on the thermal photovoltaic (TPV) array. The benchmark full-spectrum collector/receiver and prototype TPV array have been built [3], so the work performed here is to match the two systems together for optimal performance. The design consists of a non-imaging (NI) system for the IR flux incident on the TPV array mounted behind the secondary mirror. Results of the ray-tracing analysis of the different systems tested are presented.

Turbine airfoils have complex geometries and during service operation are subjected to complex loadings. In most publications, results are typically reported for either uniaxial, isothermal tensile creep or for thermal cyclic tests. The former generally provide data for creep of the superalloy and the overall performance, and the later provide data for thermal barrier coating (TBC) spallation as a function of thermally-grown oxide (TGO) thickness, surface roughness, temperature, and thermal mismatch between the layers. Both tests provide valuable data, but little is known about the effect of compressive creep strain on the performance of the superalloy/protective system at elevated temperatures. In conjunction with computational model development, laboratory-scale experimental validation was undertaken to verify the viability of the underlying damage mechanics concepts for the evolution of TBC damage. Nickel-based single-crystal Rene´ N5 coupons that were coated with a ∼150–200 μm MCrAlY bond coat and a ∼200–240 μm 7-YSZ APS topcoat were used in this effort. The coupons were exposed to 900, 1000, and 1100°C, for periods of 100, 300, 1000 and 3000 hours in slotted silicon carbide fixtures. The difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the Rene´ N5 substrate and the test fixture introduces thermally induced compressive stress in the coupon samples. Exposed samples were cross-sectioned and evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Performance data was collected based on image analysis. Energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) was employed to study the elemental distribution in the TBC system after exposure. To better understand the loading and failure mechanisms of the coating system under loading conditions, nanoindentation was used to study the mechanical properties (Young’s modulus and hardness) of the components in the TBC system and their evolution with temperature and time. The effect of uniaxial in-plane compressive creep strain on the rate of growth of the thermally grown oxide layer, the time to coating failure in TBC systems, and the evolution in the mechanical properties are presented.

The objectives defined for this study were to: (1) develop a heat-pulse sensor and a heat-transfer model for leaching measurement, and (2) conduct laboratory study of the sensor and the methodology to estimate leaching flux. In this study we investigated the feasibility for estimating leachate fluxes with a newly designed heat-pulse (HP) sensor, combining water flux density (WFD) with electrical conductivity (EC) measurements in the same sensor. Whereas previous studies used the conventional heat pulse sensor for these measurements, the focus here was to estimate WFD with a robust sensor, appropriate for field settings, having thick-walled large-diameter probes that would minimize their flexing during and after installation and reduce associated errors. The HP method for measuring WFD in one dimension is based on a three-rod arrangement, aligned in the direction of the flow (vertical for leaching). A heat pulse is released from a center rod and the temperature response is monitored with upstream (US) and downstream (DS) rods. Water moving through the soil caries heat with it, causing differences in temperature response at the US and DS locations. Appropriate theory (e.g., Ren et al., 2000) is then used to determine WFD from the differences in temperature response. In this study, we have constructed sensors with large probes and developed numerical and analytical solutions for approximating the measurement. One-dimensional flow experiments were conducted with WFD ranging between 50 and 700 cm per day. A numerical model was developed to mimic the measurements, and also served for the evaluation of the analytical solution. For estimation WFD, and analytical model was developed to approximate heat transfer in this setting. The analytical solution was based on the work of Knight et al. (2012) and Knight et al. (2016), which suggests that the finite properties of the rods can be captured to a large extent by assuming them to be cylindrical perfect conductors. We found that: (1) the sensor is sensitive for measuring WFD in the investigated range, (2) the numerical model well-represents the sensor measurement, and (2) the analytical approximation could be improved by accounting for water and heat flow divergence by the large rods.
