A question exists on how cultural backgrounds influence the paths students take to understand cultural geography and construct mental maps of their communities. This thesis draws on the interconnections among student multiculturalism, geo-progressions (learning trajectories in geography), and perception of the environment at the community scale. As a result of the Road Map for 21st Century Geography Education, geo-progressions have received increased attention by geography education researchers. The majority of the effort to-date has focused on the first theme of the National Geography Standards: the world in spatial terms (Standards 1-3). This study attempts to deconstruct and rethink a geo-progression by considering multiple paths to learning Geography Standard Six, "how culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions." The study incorporates the concept of community, a major theme for third grade as indicated in the Kansas Standards for History, Government, and Social Studies. During this longitudinal study, students were asked to make mental maps and talk about their community-based sense of place twice during part of the 2015-2016 school year. Third-grade classrooms from four demographically distinct areas of Kansas were surveyed: Manhattan, Garden City, Horton, and Junction City. The first session was conducted in September 2015. In January 2016, the same students were asked to perform the same tasks to assess any temporal differences. Mental maps and interviews were coded and analyzed to assess the spectrum of how students perceive a spatial sense of community over time. Interviews with teachers helped document classroom-to-classroom differences in how the concept of community was incorporated into the teaching effort.

\"Houve época em que as empresas podiam ser organizações focadas nos próprios processos produtivos e comerciais, pressionando o mercado a se adaptar a suas necessidades ou características, de acordo com o modelo de negócios por elas praticado. Na medida em que a sociedade e o mercado se alteraram em profundidade e complexidade, exigindo ao mesmo tempo melhores produtos, mais resultados e ganhos crescentes, as empresas passaram a sentir a necessidade de se envolver num processo contínuo de melhoria\", (PINEDO, 2003). Devido ao processo de globalização produtiva os concorrentes passaram a pressionar muito mais duramente, pelo fato espantoso de que o espaço de mercado passou a ser o mundo inteiro. Defeitos e atrasos na entrega dos produtos são mazelas não mais aceitas pelos consumidores. A crescente exigência destes por produtos customizados e entregas rápidas tem provocado um litígio entre as empresas e o tradicional sistema de produção em massa, que muitas vezes não consegue atingir as expectativas dos clientes. Para se adaptarem a esse ambiente competitivo, as empresas de manufatura, seguindo os passos da indústria automobilística, estão cada vez mais utilizando os conceitos e técnicas da Produção Enxuta, ou seja, produzindo em resposta a demandas específicas, somente quando necessário, controlando a qualidade do produto e do prazo de entrega, e ao mínimo custo. Nesse sentido, o objetivo desse trabalho é propor um método de implantação de sistema Kanban que possa auxiliar as organizações a utilizarem esta ferramenta da Produção Enxuta, retirando dessa os maiores benefícios possíveis, como redução do inventário, melhoria do sistema de gerenciamento, redução de atrasos em entregas, entre outros. In this direction, the objective of this work isto consider a method of system implantation Kanban that it can assist the organizations to use this tool of the Lean Production, removing that the biggest possible benefits, as reduction of inventory, improvement of the management system, reduction of delays in deliveries, among others. This method will have to serve as base of orientation for the involved ones in a process of Kanban\'s implantation.

Análise aos constrangimentos existentes nomeadamente financeiros, estruturais, operacionais, tecnológicos e orográficos, bem como às soluções encontradas para os minorar. Enumeração das etapas de revisão do conceito logístico da empresa, dando ênfase à utilização da metodologia de Value Stream Map para uma melhor compreensão da organização e diagnóstico, não apenas dos problemas mas também das vantagens competitivas da organização. Definição do novo layout do armazém, definido para permitir a implementação de novas metodologias de trabalho, nomeadamente o abastecimento Kanban às linhas e de ferramentas de redução de stock baseadas em sistemas Pull. Comparação entre indicadores de performance da empresa antes e após a implementação das alterações. Análise às melhorias no aumento de faturação e de produtividade, bem como na redução de stocks e de paragens de linha.
Description of the project conception stages of the new Aspöck Portugal warehouse, a Portuguese automotive supplier, as well as, the material and information flow definition in the logistic process. Analysis of the financial, operational, technological, structural and orographic constrains as well as the solutions found to diminish them. Characterization of the company logistic concept by focusing the Value Stream Map methodology, for a better understanding and diagnosis of the organization, highlighting not only the problems but also the organization competitive advantages. Definition of the new warehouse layout, taking in consideration the new operative methodologies, namely the kanban line supply and stock reduction tools based on the Pull system. Comparison of some company key performance indicators in the stages before and after the implementation of the new building and methodologies. Analysis to the improvement in the output and productivity, but also at stock reduction and line stoppages.

Este trabalho apresenta um método que visa auxiliar os agentes de mudança na condução de processos de implementação de sistemas de produção enxuta, cujo conceito tem sido largamente aplicado em diversas indústrias no Brasil, tais como a Ford, a GM, a Visteon, a Eaton, a Delphi, a Meritor, para citar apenas algumas. Entretanto, principalmente nas empresas que possuem produtos com grande variedade de peças e componentes, e com características distintas de demanda, muitos gerentes têm encontrado dificuldades ao tentar implementar um sistema de produção enxuta. O método é desenvolvido a partir de uma ampla revisão bibliográfica em torno do conceito de gerenciamento da mudança e melhoria organizacional, bem como dos princípios e das principais práticas e ferramentas enxutas. Com isso, são estudados com mais profundidade o mapeamento do fluxo de valor, a produção puxada, o sistema de controle Kanban e o layout celular. Em seguida, o método é validado empiricamente por meio de duas aplicações, a primeira numa empresa produtora de bebedouros e a segunda numa empresa produtora de tanques para armazenagem e resfriamento de leite.
This work presents a method that aims to help the change agents in the Lean Production Systems implantation, whose concept has been applied in several industries in Brazil, such as Ford, GM, Visteon, Eaton, Delphi, Meritor, etc. However, mainly in the companies with great variety of goods and components, many managers have been difficulties to implement a lean production system. The method is developed from a wide bibliographical revision around change and improvement management concept, as well as lean production tools and techniques. It is studied value stream mapping, pull production, Kanban control system and cellular layout. The method is empirically validated in two applications, the first application is in a drinking fountain company, and the second one is in a tank of milk storage company.

La presente tesi di laurea è incentrata sul mio contributo, nel ruolo di facilitatore, alle modifiche ed ai miglioramenti effettuati all'interno della riprogettazione del flusso di produzione di tre prodotti dell'azienda Orlandi Radiatori S.p.A., il cui core business è quello della realizzazione di scambiatori di calore che sfruttano la tecnologia "Plate and Bar", particolarmente idonei per essere installati su motori destinati al settore agricolo, a quello del movimento terra, a quello dei gruppi elettrogeni e per applicazioni speciali.L'obiettivo del progetto è quello di apportare opportune modifiche al processo di produzione, migliorandone i K.P.I., mediante un'attenta valutazione della situazione di partenza ed un opportuno studio dei cambiamenti implementabili secondo un'adeguata scala di priorità. Lo strumento utilizzato per valutare lo scenario di partenza è stato la Value Stream Mapping, ovvero mappatura del flusso a valore, allo scopo di generare la Current State Map, ovvero la mappatura dello stato attuale; con questo strumento è stato possibile effettuare un'attenta analisi del processo produttivo, mettendo in evidenza le principali criticità e permettendo di iniziare a ragionare sui possibili miglioramenti che hanno portato alla stesura della Future State Map, ovvero la mappatura dello stato futuro, situazione raggiungibile mediante l'applicazione di alcuni strumenti propri della Lean Production, quali, principalmente, le 5S ed il Visual Management, l'introduzione di un sistema a Kanban, il Milk-Run e la Total Productive Maintenance, al fine di dar vita ad una gestione Pull, dunque tirata dal cliente, della produzione.I risultati ottenuti sono stati quelli di una netta riduzione del WIP in tutto il reparto, un incremento sensibile di efficienza in una fase critica del processo produttivo, la riduzione del Lead Time, ovvero del tempo di attraversamento di un pezzo fra le fasi di produzione, e la strutturazione di un sistema informativo solido e stabile.

Rapporten är en sammanställning av gruppens samlade erfarenheter och lärdomar av ett projekt vars syfte var att utveckla ett verktyg som ska visualisera svarstider mellan mobila klienter och datacenter. Genom att använda kontinuerlig prototypning har gruppen kunnat arbeta på ett användarna sätt för att uppfylla kundens verkliga behov. För att uppnå detta användes utvecklingsmetodiken Kanban. Under projektets gång anpassades metodiken för att bättra passa in i arbetet. Projektets användartester har lett till sammanfattande erfarenheter om visualisering av data. Visualiseringar som projektgruppen ansetts tydliga uppfattades inte alltid på samma sätt av användarna. Att visualisera flera parametrar på en världskarta anses vara problematiskt då kartan i sig endast består av länder. För visualisering av flera parametrar måste då även externa användas, exempelvis cirklar eller andra former.

This thesis is primarily focused on building a systematic theory for spatio-temporal memories based on unsupervised learning and exploring its applications. Also, contributions are made in the area of supervised learning techniques. The self-organizing map (SOM) is a biologically inspired unsupervised learning paradigm which finds numerous applications in learning, clustering and recalling spatial input patterns. SOM is also used as a software tool for visualizing high-dimensional data space by projecting it onto a lower dimensional space, typically two-dimensions and can be considered as a vector quantization (VQ) technique. Since the time SOM was originally published, many variants of it have appeared and used extensively in engineering applications. A notable variant is the neural gas (NGAS) algorithm. Though the SOM and its variants work well in practice, the learning rules in the basic SOM are heuristic. Also, the techniques are well suited for clustering and recall of spatial patterns. However, if the data is spatio-temporal, these techniques fail to learn the temporal dynamics along with the spatial proximities in the input data space. The traditional approach for learning spatio-temporal patterns is to incorporate time on the output space of a SOM along with heuristic update rules that work well in practice. Inspired by the pioneering work of Alan Turing, who used reaction-diffusion equations to explain spatial pattern formation, we develop an analogous theoretical model for building a spatio-temporal memory to learn and recall temporal patterns. Using coupled reaction-diffusion equations, we develop a mathematical theory from first principles for constructing a spatio-temporal SOM (STSOM) and derive an update rule for learning based on the gradient of a potential function. The temporal plasticity effect observed during recall in response to the input dynamics is mathematically quantified. We develop a systematic theory to reconstruct missing samples in a time series using a spatio-temporal memory. Towards this goal, a novel algorithm to estimate the Markov order of a given input sequence is proposed. The efficacy of the reconstruction technique is tested on synthetic and real data sets to validate the theory. Several applications require classification of the data by prioritizing some of the input attributes. The basic SOM and its variants consider the entire input without any priority over the attributes. We propose an unsupervised learning algorithm called the priority based soft vector quantization feature map (PSVQFM) and an architecture that prioritizes attributes of the input data towards clustering. We also present an analysis on the misclassification error and prove that the proposed algorithm is asymptotically optimal. Though the PSVQFM is not directly linked to spatio-temporal memories, the proposed algorithm can be folded within a spatio-temporal memory architecture that incorporates priority based attributes within spatio-temporal sequences. Learning rate is a crucial parameter governing the convergence rate of any learning algorithm. Most of the learning algorithms based on the stochastic gradient descent (SGD) method depend on heuristic choices of the learning rate. In this thesis, we derive improved bounds on the learning rate of SGD based adaptive learning algorithms by analyzing the largest eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix from first principles. This idea can be explored for both supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms based on SGD. We have also contributed novel ideas and techniques for supervised learning algorithms, summarized below. We proposed an artificial neural network (ANN) architecture based on the back-propagation algorithm that non-linearly transforms a given probability density function (pdf) into a desired pdf. We provide an estimate on the number of hidden neurons based on the input statistics. This approach is useful for density estimation problems. The Hessian based bounds on learning rates for algorithms based on SGD and the supervised learning technique for pdf transformation are relegated to the Appendices to keep the flow of the thesis coherent.

AbstractLGBTQ neighborhoods face change. Planning for these neighborhoods requires data about LGBTQ residential concentration. Some analysts have used US Census same-sex partner data to make judgments about LGBTQ neighborhoods. Two agency actions make this reliance problematic. The US Census was required to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act and reassigned some LGBTQ responses in a heteronormal way. The Census also assigned sex based upon patterns of names. These US Census actions of gay removal and sex assignment to datasets raise questions about the usefulness of the partner dataset. A queer reading of the census may give a better representation of neighborhood development and decline. Data are developed for four queer neighborhoods: the West Village in New York City, Center City Philadelphia, Midtown Atlanta, and Midtown Kansas City. The results show that queer attributes of these areas grew to about 1990. Some queer attributes may have declined some from their peak. The results raise questions about social surveys, the closet, and the direction of LBGTQ neighborhoods in the twenty-first century. LGBTQ displacement has occurred.

AbstractAs happiness is directly experienced by the individual as valuable, its normative value needs no additional justification. Things like institutions and moral principles may be used to promote happiness directly and indirectly. In time, they may be mistakenly valued for their own sake, while ultimately their values should be based on their contribution to happiness. We are born, brought up, and socially influenced to have certain preferences which are largely consistent with our own happiness. Where they diverge, then apart from the effects on the happiness in the future and of others (hence really no divergence in the longer/wider perspective of happiness), ultimately it is happiness that is really consistent with rationality. Arguments for happiness as the only intrinsic value are made and defended against objections or opposite arguments (including ‘Rather be unhappy Socrates than a happy pig’, Kant's categorical imperatives, Rawls’ maximin, etc.). The apparent acceptability of these opposing positions is due either to our imperfect rationality and/or inadequate account on the effects in the future and on others.

AbstractKant’s third question (“What may I hope?”) is underdiscussed in comparison to the other two, even though he himself took it to be the question that united his efforts in theoretical and practical philosophy. This is largely his own fault: in his discussion of the question he moves quickly from talking about rational hope to discussing the kind of Belief or faith (Glaube) that grounds it. Moreover, the canonical statements of his own moral proof do not seem to give hope any essential role to play. In this chapter I first consider the ways in which pre-Kantian authors muddied the distinction between what we would call “hope” and “expectation.” I then look at how Kant’s views about hope evolve to the point where, by the time of the “End of All Things” essay of 1794, he seems to endorse a kind of hopeful pessimism about our this-worldly situation, at least. I then examine a version of Kant’s moral proof that succeeds in locating a role for hope that is distinct from that of Belief, expectation, optimism, and so on. Finally, I turn to some contemporary work in two very different arenas – Anthropocene scholarship and Christian eschatology – in order to look at how the concepts of hope and optimism are deployed in those contexts. We will see that although some of the recent discourses about the “Good Anthropocene” slip beyond hope into full-blown optimism, most authors working on ecological and environmental topics are careful to keep the attitudes distinct. By contrast, there is a tendency among contemporary theologians to follow earlier Christian authors in slipping beyond mere hope to optimistic faith, and even to full-blown certainty.

AbstractAgile systems, like the Kanban and Scrum frameworks, are built on assumptions of sustainability and stability, however, there is little empirical evidence on whether such systems are stable in practice or not. Therefore, in this study we aim to inspect the stability of Agile systems by leveraging the concept of stability described in Queueing Theory. We define a novel metric, the Stability Metric, as a way of assessing queueing systems, especially Agile systems. We inspect 926 Jira projects in 14 organizations with over 1.6 million product backlog items using this metric. The analysis showed that 72.89% of these Jira projects were not stable and stable systems, on average, had product backlog sizes 10 times shorter than unstable ones. These results suggest that while the goal of Agile is to create a sustainable, stable way of working, this is not guaranteed, and a better understanding of systems and queues may be required to help design, create, coach, and maintain optimal Agile systems.

This chapter examines the emergence of the Religious Right in Kansas. On May 31, 2009, Dr. George Tiller was murdered at the Reformation Lutheran Church in suburban Wichita. As one of the region's few providers of legal late-term abortions, Tiller had earned the ire of antiabortion activists. No issue brought churches as directly into the political arena during the late 1980s and 1990s as abortion. The Religious Right in Kansas gained national attention because of its role in encouraging the Kansas State Board of Education to approve science standards that downplayed the teaching of evolution. The decision raised questions such as: why Kansas was such a hotbed of religious conservatism; or why it mattered that independent evangelical Protestant churches were now on the same side of many issues as conservative Roman Catholics. The chapter explores the implications of the debate over evolution for Kansas religion and politics.

A physical simulation based activity in the form of a board game has been developed to explain the concepts of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and analysis. The activity explains the basic concepts of Value Stream Mapping, drawing of the Current state map, development of Future state map, and implementation of the future state. Simulation activity is run in three phases and the results of implementing various lean tools are observed. Effects of various tools like the Supermarket, Kanban, and Pull system are observed in a learn-by-doing environment. This simulation activity can be used to compliment training programs in Lean manufacturing.

Globalisation, has been challenged in the last two years by the emergence of the Corona virus. In particular, the events of the last two years have had a tremendous impact on the educational process throughout the world, as the learning process has taken a completely new turn; the young people, who have been deprived of much unconcern, have lost the most in terms of educational processes. Despite these facts, with a lot of effort, it has been possible to maintain the high level of education and knowledge transfer with the help of modern technologies (online learning). Even more, successful practises and thus real-time networking and education have been achieved. One of the results of the above work is also the bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Slovenia (University of Ljubljana) and the US state of Kansas (Wichita State University), which started in October 2021 and ended in January 2022. We created a project that involves students from both continents and gives them the opportunity to learn about cultural and linguistic differences. Multilingual communication is something to strive for, especially in the post-covid times. Slovenian students learned about US states and tried to represent them graphically in an appropriate way by imitating the design of letters or inscriptions. Following the same principle, Kansas students were also involved in the project, with the difference that they were able to collect and learn data about different European countries. The result of the bilateral cooperation was a world map that represents the state or country as the students see and perceive it. In designing the map, the students considered historical, sociological, and cultural aspects specific to a region. This laid the foundation for further collaboration and created a basis that can help educate and learn about cultural and linguistic differences in the world in the future. The first phase of the project is currently ongoing, but will be expanded in the coming years. The aim of the project is to create a graphic printout of all the countries in the world, displayed in what is called a typography world map. Our aim is to connect educational institutions from all over the world and thus contribute to the acceptance of cultural and linguistic differences.

[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology] Aim/Purpose : This paper aims to describe how various Kanban elements can help alleviate two prominent types of challenges, communication and collaboration in Global Software Development (GSD). Background: Iterative and Lean development methodologies like Kanban have gained significance in the software development industry, both in the co-located and globally distributed contexts. However, little is known on how such methodologies can help mitigate various challenges in that occur in a globally distributed software development context. Methodology: The study was conducted using a single-case study based on a general inductive approach to analysis and theory development. Through the literature review, collaboration and communication challenges that GSD teams face were identified. Data collected through semi-structured interviews was then inductively analyzed to describe how the case-study teams employed various Kanban elements to mitigate communication and collaboration challenges they face during GSD. Findings: The study found that some Kanban elements, when properly employed, can help alleviate collaboration and communication challenges that occur within GSD teams. These relate to Inclusion Criteria, Reverse Items, Kanban Board, Policies, Avatars, and Backlog. Contribution: The paper contributes to knowledge by proposing two simple concept maps that detail the specific types of communication and collaboration challenges which can be alleviated by the aforementioned Kanban elements in GSD. Recommendations for Practitioners: This paper is relevant to GSD teams who are seeking ways to enhance their team collaboration and communication as these are the most important elements that contribute to GSD project success. It is recommended that relevant Kanban elements be used to that effect, depending on the challenges that they aim to alleviate. Future Research: Future research can investigate the same research questions (or similar ones) using a quantitative approach.

For nuclear power plants, the four major requirements are 1) high safety, 2) high reliability, 3) economical competitiveness, and 4) minimum environmental impact. However, it is still difficult to completely avoid problems concerning structural materials caused by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and for piping systems caused by flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) and liquid drop impingement (LDI). Since especially FAC and LDI are uncertain phenomena as pipe wall thinning, there are the piping rupture accident risks on all piping systems under the specific conditions. In Japan, after August 2004, the accident of the secondary pipe rupture in Mihama Power Plant Unit 3, The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO), R&D projects on pipe wall thinning phenomena and mechanism have been employed by many organizations. On the other hand, evaluation of the safety and reliability of piping systems of long term operating plants and with the special attention to seismic condition have been requested. It was requested to enable evaluation of pipe wall thinning and its reliability with more accuracy. This project was programmed under the government budget from 2006 to 2010 fiscal year according to the Strategy Load-Map for Ageing Management generated by the society of industry, government and academia [1]. As the milestone for the first half decade of the load-map, the project had these achievements: 1) Establish computer program for FAC simulation, 2) Clarify droplet behavior for LDI prediction, 3) Simplified calculation model of pipe wall thinning for seismic evaluation, 4) Evaluate safety margin of thinned piping by FAC or LDI.

In this study, a three-dimensional model coupling hydrodynamics with algae transport dynamics is investigated. The hydrodynamic model solves the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by a semi-implicit, fractional step method, where the hydrostatic components are determined first and the non-hydrostatic pressure and other components are determined in a subsequent step. Wind velocity on the water surface is accounted for the effect of wind stress on the flow velocities in the hydrodynamic model. Then, the model is coupled with an algae transport model, which enables simulation of algae transport and algal blooms. As an example, the model is implemented to analyze the transition of blue-green algae in Milford Lake, which is the largest man-made lake in Kansas suffering from blue-green algae blooms. The three-dimensional model provides a robust and efficient way for hydrodynamic and algae modeling and can be implemented to studies on different types of rivers and reservoirs easily. The simulated results can be very useful for algae control and prediction in both short and long terms.

Kant's reflection on happiness starts from the theme of morality as it focuses on the attempt to reconcile moral virtue and the attainment of happiness. The peculiarity of this reflection is to enter the religious sphere, since the need for moral fulfilment and a contemporary state of happiness must be referred to a non-phenomenal sphere. It is therefore necessary to propose the immortality of the soul and the presence of a God who guarantees this moral fulfilment of man to speak of a real achievement of happiness. This perspective is also interesting for contemporary philosophical reflection because it overturns the relationship between morality and religion: it is no longer the latter that provides the basis for morality, but morality, to be complete, requires that we proceed towards the sphere of spiritual reality. The Institute for Policy & Social Research (IPSR) at the University of Kansas received funding from the Economic Development Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CARES Act to study broadband access in the state of Kansas. To conduct this study, IPSR examined existing data, fielded our own survey of broadband speeds and access, conducted focus groups, and commissioned a chapter on the digital divide within the state of Kansas. The report discusses available data sources and introduces the speed test data collected by IPSR in order to map the broadband access landscape in Kansas. Along with speed tests, the Kansas broadband survey collected information regarding broadband access, adequacy, affordability and satisfaction. The survey data were enhanced by interviews and focus groups that allowed Kansans to share their struggles with internet access in their own words. The report also investigates digital equity using surveys and interviews conducted at public libraries that revealed the challenges faced by library patrons, including lack of digital access and literacy. The report that is summarized below indicates a rural-urban digital divide in terms of access, affordability, and satisfaction with broadband services. The data in this report indicate that up to 1,000,000 Kansans live in regions that lack access to highspeed broadband services, now considered to be 100 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 20 Mbps upload (100/20). Close to half of survey respondents (46%) report dissatisfaction with broadband services.

Review question / Objective: This study systematically evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of Kangai injection combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the treatment of gynecological malignant tumors. The subjects of the study were patients with clinical diagnosis of ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and endometrial cancer. The experimental group was given Kang'ai injection combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, while the control group was given conventional chemotherapy. The primary outcome was the overall clinical response rate. Secondary outcomes included quality of life, body mass, indicators of immune function, and adverse events. Information sources: Eight databases including CNKI, Wan fang Database, VIP Chinese Database, China Biomedical Literature Service System, EI, Springer, PubMed, The Cochrane Library were searched before May 2022.

Passing sediment from reservoirs to downstream channels is a potential solution to aging infrastructure and reservoir storage capacity loss, which is a pressing challenge nationwide. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) sediment management actions at reservoirs such as flushing may drive ecological changes that may be beneficial or detrimental to downstream ecosystems. However, these potential effects are currently not well understood or documented. An exploratory study of the potential ecological effects of releasing sediment downstream from reservoirs is presented in this technical note (TN). We focus on Tuttle Creek Reservoir in Kansas and use fish species as indicators of ecological change. A literature review of Kansas fishes was conducted and three conceptual models illustrating potential benefits or negative effects of releasing sediment downstream of Tuttle Creek Reservoir was developed. Some fish species may benefit from sediment releases, while others may be negatively affected. Further research and tools are needed to develop a greater understanding of these effects.

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes a method for evaluating the received coverage from Automatic Identification System (AIS) shoreside sites along the Missouri River managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Lock Operations Management Application (LOMA), and presents the results of that analysis. The purpose is to identify AIS coverage gaps in the current system. Reception of AIS transmissions between shore-based transceivers and vessels is generally line-of-sight between the vessel and the AIS site antenna. However, signal reception may be affected by factors such as the distance and terrain between the vessel and the transceiver site, quality of the transceiver installation, state of the equipment either aboard the vessel or at the shore transceiver station, and atmospheric phenomena. Quantifying coverage gaps along the inland waterways system can inform research that uses AIS data, provide information on the performance of the AIS network, and provide guidance for efforts to address coverage gaps to improve navigation safety. In autumn 2020, severe shoaling was occurring on the Missouri River. As the shoals were identified, the Kansas City District requested the LOMA system transmit AIS Aid to Navigation (AtoN) to mark the shoals in several critical areas. However, vessel pilots sometimes reported that they were not receiving the AIS AtoN being transmitted. At the request of the Kansas City District, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (ERDC-CHL), conducted a coverage analysis using data collected from the LOMA AIS transceivers in the area to determine if there were coverage issues and their extent and to aid in determining the best means of addressing any coverage gaps.

The United States has been affected by an extensive novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak since March 2020. On March 9, 2020 we started an online survey of people’s perceptions and behaviors related to this issue in Missouri and adjacent states (Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Arkansas). The survey was ended on June 9, 2020 and in total 7,392 surveys were completed. In order to assess how attitudes and behaviors related to COVID-19 may change over time, two follow-up surveys were conducted with those respondents who indicated interest in the re-surveys and provided an email address. These two working reports summarize major results of the initial survey and three survey waves, including respondents’ perceived severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, sources of information, knowledge about COVID-19, perceptions of COVID-19 risk, satisfaction with management entities, and preventive actions.
