Reading Rifāʿa al-Ṭahṭāwī’s 1850s Arabic translation (published 1867) of François Fénelon’sLes Aventures de Télémaquewith and against the realist impulses of nineteenth-century British and French literary comparatism, this essay posits al-Ṭahṭāwī’s translation as a transformational moment in the reception of the “European” literary tradition in the Arab-Islamic world. Arguing that the ancient Greek gods who populate Fénelon’s 1699 sequel to Homer’sOdysseyare analogous to Muslim jinn—spirits of smokeless fire understood to be real—al-Ṭahṭāwī rewrites as Islamized “truth” what Muslims long had dismissed as pagan “fiction,” thereby adroitly negotiating a crisis of comparison and mediating an epistemic sea change in modern Arabic fiction. Indeed, the “untrue” gods of the Greeks (and of French literature) turn not just real but historically referential: invoking the real-historical world of 1850s Egypt, al-Ṭahṭāwī’s translation exhorts an unjust Ottoman-Egyptian sovereign to heed lessons that Fénelon’s original once had addressed to French royalty. Catherine Gallagher has defined the fictionality specific to the modern European novel as neither pure deceit nor pure truth. How might al-Ṭahṭāwī’s rehabilitation of the mythological as the supernatural/historical “real”—and of the idolatrous as secular/sacred “truth”—invite us to rethink novelistic fictionality in trans-Mediterranean terms, across European and Arab-Islamic contexts?

This feminist semiotic study explores the folkloric imaginary of the jinn in the context of children’s and young adults’ Arab Gothic literature. Across the Middle East, the jinn is a common trope in literature, folklore and oral storytelling who, in diegetic terms, can manifest as the Gothic figure of an aging female, deranged older woman or succubus (known as sa’lawwa in Arabic). In this study, a novel feminist semiotic framework is developed to explore the extent to which the Gothic female succubus either haunts or liberates Arab girls’ coming-of-age fictions. This issue is addressed via a feminist semiotic reading of the narratives of Middle Eastern woman author @Ranoy7, exploring the appeal of her scary stories presented on YouTube. Findings reveal tacit fears, ambivalences and tensions embodied within the Arab Gothic sign of the aging female succubus or jinn. Overall, the research develops feminist insights into the semiotic motif of the female jinn and its role in constituting Arab females as misogynistic gendered sign objects in the context of the social media story explored.

The society of Yemen, which in many respects retains its traditional features, is characterized, among other matters, by a strong belief it the existence of otherworldly beings, such as jinn, ghoul, ghost, werewolf, etc. This paper is intended to discuss to what extent and in what way this belief is manifested in the modern ethnographic and fiction literature of Yemen. Appropriate fragments of short stories, novels, memoir and scholarly works of Yemeni authors help to clarify what Yemenis think about the nomenclature of supernatural creatures, about their appearances, abilities, habits and “specializations” in contacts with humans, about their harm and their possible benefits for humans.

AbstractThis project aims to give an analysis of the signs of confrontation in terms of postmodernism strategies by Brian McHale experienced by the main character in Gwendolyn Willow Wilson’s Alif The Unseen. Besides, the researcher analyzed the novel used the theory by Jean Francois Lyotard and Fredrich Jameson to describe the main character’s reaction toward ontological confrontation in postmodern society used in the novel. This article is qualitative research which used the Postmodernism studies to understand one of the strategies to show the ontological confrontations in the novel. This article elaborated some ontological confrontations in postmodernism including confrontation between the fiction and the historical realemes, the fusion between two worlds, and also polyglot. Meanwhile, this article also classified the main character’s reaction toward the ontological confrontation in 5 reactions: refusal reaction, skeptical reaction, curiousity reaction, surprise reaction, and acceptance reaction. It can be concluded that Alif as the part of Postmodern society must recognized the jinn creatures around him as the hacker who has the high ability and dependency of the technology.Keywords: Confrontation, Alif The Unseen, Postmodernism AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan analisis terhadap tanda-tanda konfrontasi dalam hal strategi postmodernisme oleh Brian McHale yang dialami oleh tokoh utama dalam Alif The Unseen karya Gwendolyn Willow Wilson. Selain itu, peneliti menganalisis novel menggunakan teori oleh Jean Francois Lyotard dan Fredrich Jameson untuk menggambarkan reaksi karakter utama terhadap konfrontasi ontologis dalam masyarakat postmodern yang digunakan dalam novel. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang menggunakan studi Postmodernisme untuk memahami salah satu strategi untuk menunjukkan konfrontasi ontologis dalam novel. Artikel ini menguraikan beberapa konfrontasi ontologis dalam postmodernisme termasuk konfrontasi antara fiksi dan kenyataan sejarah, fusi antara dua dunia, dan juga polyglot. Sementara itu, artikel ini juga mengklasifikasikan reaksi karakter utama terhadap konfrontasi ontologis dalam 5 reaksi: reaksi penolakan, reaksi skeptis, reaksi rasa ingin tahu, reaksi kejutan, dan reaksi penerimaan. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa Alif sebagai bagian dari masyarakat Postmodern harus mengakui makhluk jin di sekitarnya sebagai peretas yang memiliki kemampuan tinggi dan ketergantungan teknologi.Kata kunci: Konfrontasi, Alif The Unseen, Postmodernisme

This article comments on the notion of ‘constraint’ by analysing the specific difficulties in the translation of a martial arts (‘wuxia’) novel into French and English. The Legend of the Condor Heroes (射鵰英雄傳, she diao ying xiong zhuan) is the first part of the ‘Condor Trilogy’ (射鵰三部曲, she diao san bu qu), the masterpiece of Chinese writer Jin Yong (金庸). Little known in the West, the novel was recently translated by Anna Holmwood and Wang Jiann-Yuh. This article studies the strategies adopted by each translator to render the cultural specificities of the source context in the target culture. By so doing, it contributes to theoretical debates concerning transfers between two distant literary and cultural systems.

By examining William Hatchett's The Chinese Orphan alongside The Fall of Mortimer, in this article Jina Moon aims to expand our critical awareness of Hatchett's oeuvre and to deepen our understanding of the shifting contours of misogyny as an integral component of eighteenth-century political discourse. The Fall of Mortimer differs from other sources of anti-Walpole propaganda, offering pointedly acrimonious treatment not only of Walpole, but of Queen Caroline. The Chinese Orphan was published in February 1741, two months before the election of that year dealt the final blow to Walpole's career. The play reflects shifting attitudes towards women in power and the contemporary tendency to contrast the ambitious and political Caroline with submissive and domestic Princess Augusta. To examine Hatchett's work is to gain new insight into the ways in which authors adapted both to the restrictions of the Licensing Act and to the shifting political climate of the 1740s. Jina Moon received her Ph.D. in English from the University of Tulsa (2015). Her study of Domestic Violence in Victorian and Edwardian Fiction appeared from Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2016.

In this piece, I approach the relationship between the paradigm of imbricated crises pertaining to the second decade of the twenty-first century and its contemporaneous dystopian literature. I focus particularly on how dystopian literature forges a sense of closure that attempts to give meaning through the construction of imaginary memories of how crises came and went, or came and stayed. Dystopian tales provide the troubled reader of its time with a sense of narrative continuation and a substitute for closure. For my analysis, I draw on a corpus of literary works from around the world, which includes The Queue, by Basma Abdel Aziz; Station Eleven, by Emily St John Mandel; The Emissary, by Tawada Yōko; Severance: A Novel, by Ling Ma; China Dream, by Ma Jian; Ansibles, Profilers and Other Machines of Wonder, by Andrea Chapela; and The Ministry for the Future, by Kim Stanley Robinson.

<p>金庸作品含有大量不存在於西方概念的文化詞──中華文化、歷史、武術、儒釋道思想交織其中。經分析《射鵰英雄傳(一)》中的人名、外號和功夫招式的英譯後,發現譯者選用策略並無明顯模式,策略不一致尤其造成姓名順序混亂。唯一明確的兩個規律是:一、譯者傾向使用貼近原著的翻譯策略,包括音譯、直譯及語義翻譯,大量保留原文文化特色及語言形式。二、對於歷史人物或含有典故的人名多採用音譯,少數人名添加直譯於其後。另外,本研究發現一項值得關注的新策略:「特色刻畫」,主要用來翻譯人名,複製金庸塑造的人物形象,屬於以讀者為中心的策略。本研究歸納出特色刻畫的類型,能作為往後研究或翻譯的基礎,協助譯者加以應用於文化詞翻譯。</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>The expressions in Jin Yong&rsquo;s works feature culture-loaded terms and concepts mostly absent in Western culture: traditional Chinese culture, historical circumstances, martial arts, and Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. After analyzing names of characters, nicknames, and names of fighting moves in A Hero Born: Legends of the Condor Heroes I, the present study found few patterns of translation strategy. The strategy inconsistency especially made the translated name order varied. Only two patterns were certain: 1) The translator tended to use author-oriented methods, including transliteration, literal translation, and semantic translation, largely preserving the culture and language form of the source text. 2) Names of historical figures or with allusion were transliterated, a few of which were followed by literal translation. A noteworthy new strategy characterization identified by this study was mainly adopted in translating names of characters. This reader-oriented method attempted to replicate the characters&rsquo; images portrayed by Jin Yong. The present study has deduced types of characterization to which future research or translation may refer to in applying translation strategies for culture-loaded terms. </p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

This dissertation has examined the tanci fiction Jing zhong zhuan, or A Biography of Dedication and Loyalty, authored by a gentry woman writer Zhou Yingfang in the late nineteenth century. I argue that by adapting the well-known patriotic story of General Yue Fei in Chinese history, Zhou Yingfang suggests new directions in grand historical narrative in her own voice and from her own perspective. Negotiating the writing conventions of earlier legends, she turns the stereotyped masculine image of Yue Fei into a hero in both public and domestic settings. In addition, she adds many detailed episodes from Yue Fei's family life and portrays virtuous women in a chaotic historical period, paralleling the conventional narration of wars and politics. Although often (mis)read as a text that inspires nationalism, Jing zhong zhuan actually redefines significant values in late imperial China, including the importance of family and the complex relation between filial piety and political loyalty. The tanci also enriches the notions of female virtues, expanding them from chastity to beauty, learning and management skills. Employing tanci, a unique genre that is closely associated with and quite dominated by women, Zhou Yingfang demonstrates her gendered consciousness in relationship to late nineteenth-century Confucian family dynamics and her self-representation and literary engagement within grand historical narratives. My dissertation sheds light on the dynamics between women's writing and historiography, as well as on the discourses of patriotism and emerging nationalism at the turn of the twentieth-century in China.

The present research is an attempt at a morphological analysis of classical Chinese supernatural fiction known as zhiguai under the theoretical framework designed by Vladimir Propp and later developed by Alan Dundes. As to the study of Chinese zhiguai tales, mountains of work has been done, but research is usually confined either to exploration into the geographical-historical sources of these tales or to the recognition and reconstruction of society in ancient China. It is therefore believed that a systematic study of zhiguai literature from a linguistics-oriented structuralfunctional perspective will shed light on the rules governing the textual organisation of classical Chinese fiction of the supernatural and strange. This thesis will be divided into two parts with the first one aiming at a diachronic survey of zhiguai literature. In this section, the origins of this genre and its development through dynasties in traditional China will be explored with attention focused on an evidential and thematic study of zhiguai works most influential and representative of the time and of the author as well. Part Two, which will start with a review of Propp's morphological method and model, is devoted to a synchronic study of Chinese zhiguai fiction from a Proppian perspective. For each tale text selected for morphological analysis, functions will be identified, and a linear functional scheme presented, and described in terms of the sequence of functions and the distribution of functions among dramatis personae. All the structural and functional traits will be tabulated, discussed and, where possible and necessary, compared. Finally, based on a data analysis, a conclusion will be made on morphological features and structural patterns of classical Chinese fiction of the supernatural and strange. Fifty zhiguai tales will be selected for analysis from ancient zhushu (commentaries), leishu (categorised books), congshu (collectanea), or authoritative modern editions of works of supernatural fiction in classical Chinese. In the course of selection, priority has been given to those about other/supernatural beings or mortals with supernatural power as classified by Aarne as "Tales of magic" in conformity with Propp's corpus of Russian fairy tales in Morphology ofthe Folktale.

This chapter focuses on accounts of mended and patched lives, exploring them for threads of kindnesses and poisonous knowledges. The forms of writing analyzed—novellas, short stories, and crafted memoirs—occupy a betwixt and between world of fiction and real lives. Jing-Jing Lee's two short novels sketch in emotional features of Singapore during three important periods: the years following World War II, in which children are lost and replaced; the 1980s, when children move from villages to high-rise apartments as part of planned urban renewal; and the 2000s, as elders move into small senior studio apartments. Danielle Lim's novel and memoir present complicating emotional features of public health crises over the same period involving leprosy, SARS, and nervous breakdown and schizophrenia. A tape recorder once again features, allowing an old woman to tell her tale.

Numerous new periodicals joined Beirut’s lone newspaper Ḥadīqat al-Akhbār (The Garden of News) beginning in 1870. After a decade of increasing returns from silk, readers were invited to imagine Beirut and its new journals as so many gardens of culture, economics and useful news: the gardens of Al-Jinān, the Paradise-like Al-Jannah, or the smaller still garden of Al-Junaynah; the flower of Al-Zahrah; the bee of Al-Naḥlah; joined later in the decade by the choice clippings of Al-Muqtaṭaf, and the fruitful arts of Thamarāt al-Funūn. Reworking a far older adab and poetic tradition of figuring knowledge as the product of idyllic gardens, the Beirut press’s editors and authors cultivated a utopian fiction of the garden as site of what Zaydān would later call the Nahḍah. As in Eden, the garden is always threatened with a fall, and both Salīm al-Bustānī’s novel Al-Huyām fī jinān al-Shām (Love in the Gardens of Damascus) and Yūsuf al-Shalfūn’s novel Al-Shābb al- maghrūr (The Conceited Youth; serialized simultaneously over the course of 1870 in Al-Jinān and Al-Zahrah, respectively), deliver that story.

Arabic readers in the late nineteenth century struggled to negotiate the contradictions of their position in the world economy: Beirut was at once a peripheral hub of speculation, a market for finished French textiles, and an industrializing source of the unrefined silk off which French factory owners profited. While Al-Muqtaṭaf, founded in 1876, was averse (at least in its Beirut years) to speculation and instead championed the local production of commodities in all their materiality, for Salīm al-Bustānī and Al-Jinān, it was becoming clear that finance, through the many fictions it enabled, was decisively changing the future of the region. Al-Bustānī offered late nineteenth-century Beirut and more generally readers of Arabic lessons in how the credit-driven consumption of material goods allowed the keeping up of appearances in his novels Budūr (1872), Bint al-ʿaṣr (1875, Daughter of the Age) and the early 1880s Sāmiyyah.

Abstract This chapter cites the novel China Dream by exiled storyteller Ma Jian and Liu Cixin’s science fiction fantasy The Dark Forest, which are used to describe China’s future. It explains that Ma Jian’s dystopian rhapsody tells of a society trapped by its failure to come to terms with its past. It also analyzes Liu Cixin’s vision of a China that is effortlessly part of global political, economic, and technological leadership. The chapter refers to calculations of China’s debt that focus on the borrower side, wherein loans to business, households, and government are added up. It clarifies how China’s combination of advanced economy debt levels and emerging market income levels is a unique disadvantage, emphasizing that maxing out on debt at a middling level of development made it more difficult for China to close the gap with high income countries.
