This article looks at a number of James Baldwin's early essays. These include “Stranger in the Village” (1953), “A Question of Identity” (1954), “Encounter on the Seine: Black Meets Brown” (1950) and “The Discovery of What It Means to Be an American” (1959). In these essays Baldwin resolves the contradiction between his sense of himself as an individual and his racial identity by affirming both his American citizenship and his racial identity as a source of cultural strength and authority. He conceives of race in dialectical terms, with the African American as the dynamic agent in a process envisaged as leading to an overcoming of both whiteness and blackness in favour of a reformulated American nationalism.

In 1910, James Bryan Herrick published the first clinical and laboratory description of sickle cell anemia. Two years later, he published a case report on coronary thrombosis. Together, these case reports solidified his reputation as one of the premier diagnosticians of his generation. Now regarded as a central figure in the history of American medicine, Herrick played an integral role in the clinical adoption of the electrocardiograph and the professionalization of cardiology in the United States. Although a full decade passed before the medical profession recognized his clinical description of coronary thrombosis and myocardial infarction, it has had profound implications for cardiovascular medicine and prevention over the past hundred years. As a consultant physician, Herrick advocated in favor of incorporating chemistry and laboratory evaluation into clinical practice.

Triggered by an aesthetic motif in James Cameron’s filmography, this thesis aims to describe light as a phenomenon shared beyond the human. An Annunciation unfolds in Cameron’s work, manifested through a luminous singularity: bioluminescence. Following the tracks of this uncanny light throughout several films, I consider the luminous event of the Annunciation as a modality of appearing in its bio-logical sense, i.e. in the sense of that which presides to the dynamic and inventiveness of the living in its relational dimensions. I name this dimension, a community of obsession. As far as light is concerned, this obsession is tuned to a photogenic appeal in the living, to which is tied photosensitivity in all its forms. Figurability in aesthetics likewise morphogenesis in biology, describe the multiple embodiments resulting from this bind. I name figurative ecology the trans-specific community thus created; I name figural ethology the observation method enabling to describe the obsessional dimension. I hence consider cinema in its phylogenetic perspective, in other words, throughout the long story of the interaction between life, light and forms. This thesis offers a different perspective on James Cameron’s work, as well as a biophotopolitical approach to multispecies ethnography and a new theory of communication based not on signal and noise, but on figures and grain

Gerald Dworkin's influential account of Personal Autonomy offers the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) Authenticity - the condition that one identify with one's beliefs, desires and values after a process of critical reflection, and (ii) Procedural Independence - the identification in (i) must not be "influenced in ways which make the process of identification in some way alien to the individual" (Dworkin 1989:61). I argue in this thesis that there are cases which fulfil both of Dworkin's conditions, yet are clearly not cases of autonomy. Specifically, I argue that we can best assess the adequacy of Dworkin's account of autonomy through literature, because it provides a unique medium for testing his account on the very terms he sets up for himself - ie. that autonomy apply to, and make sense of, persons leading lives of a certain quality. The examination of two novels - Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day and Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady - shows that Dworkin's explanation of identification and critical reflection is inadequate for capturing their role in autonomy and that he does not pay enough attention to the role of external factors in preventing or supporting autonomy. As an alternative, I offer the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) critical reflection of a certain kind - radical reflection, and (ii) the ability to translate the results of (i) into action - competence. The novels demonstrate that both conditions are dependent upon considerations of the content of one's beliefs, desires, values etc. Certain of these will prevent or hinder the achievement of autonomy because of their content, so autonomy must be understood in relation to substantial considerations, rather than in purely formal terms, as Dworkin argues.

Edward James (1907-84) is a little-known british poet whose late poetry, composed between 1939 and 1984, constitutes the subject of this study. Based on a critical approach to the poet's literary production, hardly available at present, and of a huge unpublished correspondance with many of the international avan-garde leading figures, this research mainly aims at defining the kind of relation between writing and representation thatin a poet usually thought of as surrealist. The thematic approach to the texts brings about what may be called the poetics of kitsch in which an inner trend suggests a singular relationship towards reality, thus providing an exciting alternative to post-modernity : from a political point of view, a personal version of anarchism; at a more individual level, a series of reinterpretations of raw perceptions and, dealing with a poet, a questioning of the artistic act, willingly or not inscribed in time

As recent as 1955, cathedrals were still unbuilt or incomplete in the young and developing dioceses of the Global South, including in Queensland, the Northern Territory and New Guinea. The lack of an adequate cathedral was considered a “reproach” over a diocese. To rectify this, the region’s Bishops sought out the best architects for the task – as earlier Bishops had before them – engaging architects trained abroad and interstate, and with connections to Australia’s renown ecclesiastical architects. They also progressed these projects remarkably fast, for cathedral building. Four significant cathedral projects were realised in Queensland during the 1960s: the completion of St James’ Church of England, Townsville (1956-60); the extension of All Souls’ Quetta Memorial Church of England, Thursday Island (1964-5); stage II of St John’s Church of England, Brisbane (1953-68); and the new St Monica’s Catholic, Cairns (1965-8). During this same era Queensland-based architects also designed new Catholic cathedrals for Darwin (1955-62) and Port Moresby (1967-69). Compared to most cathedrals elsewhere they are small, but for their communities these were sizable undertakings, representing the “successful” establishment of these dioceses and even the making of their city. However, these cathedral projects had their challenges. Redesigning, redocumenting and retendering was common as each project questioned how to adopt (or not) emergent ideas for modern cathedral design. Mid-1960s this questioning became divisive as the extension of Brisbane’s St John’s recommenced. Antagonists and the client employed theatrics and polemic words to incite national debate. However, since then these post-war cathedral projects have received limited attention within architectural historiography, even those where the first stage has been recognised. Based on interviews, archival research and fieldwork, this paper discusses these little-known post-war cathedrals projects – examining how regional tensions over tradition and modern ideas arose and played out.

Sand, or fines as some may call it, entering currently producing wells is one of the earliest problems faced by the Oil and Gas Industry in hydrocarbon recovery [Rogers, 1954; Carlson et al. 1992; McLeod 1994; JPT Staff 1995; Barrilleaux et al. 1996], and one of the toughest to solve in general [McLeod 1997]. Every year the petroleum industry spends significant capitol in cleaning and disposal costs, repair problems related to sand production, and lost revenues due to lower production rates due to mitigation efforts [Mathis 2003; Palmer et al. 2003]. Thus, sand control is, and should be, an integral part of well planning [Guerrero 2014] in unconsolidated reservoirs [Willson et al 2002; Chang 2006; Jaimes 2012], i.e., reservoirs where the rock has little or no natural inter-grain cementation. Sand production [Veeken et al. 1991; Subbiah et al. 2021] is caused by structural failure of the borehole wall rock due to drilling, degree of consolidation (very low compressive strength), the interaction between the rock and flowing fluids (production creates pressure differential and frictional drag forces that can combine to exceed the formation compressive strength), excessive drawdown causing fines and sand grain movement to the wellbore, or reduction of reservoir pressure. Sand production leads to adverse effects on various components in the wellbore and near wellbore area [Zamberi et al. 2014], such as tubing, casing, flowlines, and pumps, as well as surface equipment [Peden et al. 1984; Lidwin et al. 2013]. In addition, sand production may allow for the creation of downhole cavities [Peden et al. 1985] resulting in loss of structural integrity of the reservoir around the wellbore and ultimately possible collapse of the wellbore. Along with these possible issues, there is an additional economic impact in that sand must be separated out and disposed of at the surface and can be a few liters to several hundred cubic meters [Lidwin et al. 2013]. Decisions around sand production are not purely economic these days because regulatory and environmental restrictions have come to play a significant role in the decisions of how sand production will be handled. In general, what constitutes an acceptable level of sand production depends on operational constraints such as the ability to use erosion resistant materials, fluid separator capacity, sand disposal capability, and artificial lift equipment's capability to remove slurry from the well, but with that said, sand control methods that allow unconsolidated reservoirs to be exploited often reduce production efficiency. Thus, an effective design is always a balance between keeping formation sand in place without unduly restricting current and future productivity [Saucier 1974; Mathis 2003; Palmer et al. 2003; Lastre et al. 2013]. There are two primary methods of sand control these days, namely passive and active, where passive sand control uses perforation orientation and placement to try and mitigate sand production, while active sand control uses a more intrusive approach utilizing downhole filters [Tibbles et al. 2020]. Currently, the most popular and successful method of negating sand production is gravel packing around a downhole filter. In this method, gravel is deposited downhole by pure beta wave deposition in slightly deviated wellbores, i.e., wellbores having a deviation angle in the screen section less than about 50 degrees, or by what is normally referred to as alpha/beta wave deposition in highly deviated wellbores, i.e., wellbores where the screen section maximum deviation is greater than 50 degrees.

Two undergraduate courses (2020-23) introduce students interested in the humanities and computing to the life, works, and intellectual and material legacy of the world-famous African American writer and activist James Baldwin (1924-1987). Cross-listed with the Afroamerican, American Culture, Digital Studies, and English Departments, these courses utilize an open-access digital collection documenting Baldwin’s life and his selected works. Through innovative and experiential application of literary history in conversation with the emerging fields of Black Digital Studies and Black Digital Humanities, students develop projects that build (and build on) a growing, open-access archive. Published on the ArcGIS StoryMaps platform, these projects achieve two important higher-education goals: (1) They produce student-driven knowledge on an internationally renowned Black figure accessible to non-academic users; and (2) they confirm the importance of humanities and diversity literacy as invaluable skillsets in the modern workplace.

Declaring in the late 1950s that Sydney City was in much need of a car free civic square, Professor Denis Winston, Australia’s first chair in town and country planning at the University of Sydney, was echoing a commonly held view on how to reconfigure the city for a modern-day citizen. Queen’s Square, at the intersection of Macquarie Street and Hyde Park, first conceived in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, remained incomplete until 1978 when it was developed as a pedestrian only plaza by the NSW Government Architect under a different set of urban intentions. By relocating the traffic bound statue of Queen Victoria (1888) onto the plaza and demolishing the old Supreme Court complex (1827), so that nearby St James’ Church (1824) could becoming freestanding alongside a new multi-storey Commonwealth Supreme Court building (1975), by the Sydney-based practise of McConnel Smith and Johnson, the civic and social ambition of this pedestrian space was assured. Now somewhat overlooked in the history of Sydney’s modern civic spaces, the adjustment in the design of this square during the 1960s translated the reformed urban design agenda communicated in CIAM 8, the heart of the city (1952), a post-war treatise developed and promoted by the international architect and polemicist, Josep Lluis Sert. This paper examines the completion of Queen’s Square in 1978. Along with the symbolic role of the project, that is, to provide a plaza as a social instrument in humanising the modern-day city, this project also acknowledged the city’s colonial settlement monuments beside a new law court complex; and in a curious twist in fate, involving curtailing the extent of the proposed plaza so that the colonial Supreme Court was retained, the completion of Queen’s Square became ultra – civic.

From the 1960th to 1980th years in the second half of the 20th century, numerous “sea city concepts” were proposed as a new city image. Among these concepts, in Japan, the sea city concept reflecting the current urban development situation of that time, was drawn by the architects as an image of the ideal city. During that period, in Japan for the purpose of the further economic development, the landfilled industrial zones were created in the surroundings of large metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. It led to the concentration of the population due to the people fleeing to the big cities from the provinces for employment, which created various problems of big cities such as population overcrowding, land shortage, traffic jams, air pollution, etc., so the different tasks became apparent. As a way to solve such problems, a sea city plan has been proposed. The oldest initiative was the Tokyo Bay concept of 1958 which proposed the creation of a new city by creating a new land by landfilling Tokyo Bay. However, that initiative only covered the expansion of the existing land, and didn’t make any advantage of “ocean” resources. For that reason, the further proposals subsequently enabled taking advantage of the sea by creating the canals, artificial islands or pile-style structures which led to adoption of proposal to float up. After that, the sea city concepts basing on the floating type had increased, and the subjected water area transited from the shallow water to the offshore area. Furthermore, the authors are planning to arrange the process of transition of the concept of the sea city by taking into account the changes the way oceans are treated and the structures relative to time.

Mojave National Preserve (MOJA) in the Mojave Desert of southern California hosts an extensive geologic record, with units ranging in age from the Paleoproterozoic (2.5 to 1.7 billion years ago) to the Quaternary (present day). MOJA topography is dominated by numerous mountain ranges hosting extensive geological exposures divided by expansive valleys, dunes, and a low elevation dry salt lake. Some geological units are fossil-bearing, both within the preserve and in adjacent lands outside the boundaries of the preserve. The fossils preserved within MOJA span from the Proterozoic Eon (uncertain maximum age of fossiliferous rocks, but at least approximately 550 million years ago) to the Holocene Epoch (beginning 11,700 years ago). Abundant and diverse marine fossils are preserved in units dated from the late Proterozoic through most of the Cambrian, as well as from the Devonian through the early Permian. More recent volcanic tuff and unconsolidated sedimentary deposits in valleys preserve Cenozoic flora and fauna. Geologic surveys documented paleontological resources within the modern (2023) boundaries of MOJA as early as 1914, but fossils were rarely the focus of detailed study, and no comprehensive inventory was compiled. John Hazzard was the first geologist to devote significant attention to the study of paleontology within MOJA. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Hazzard and collaborators identified Paleozoic assemblages within the Kelso and Providence Mountains. Between the 1950s to 1980s, several dissertations and theses described the geology of various areas within MOJA, in which the authors provided limited paleontological descriptions and fossil locality information. Jack Mount conducted extensive paleontological research in the Cambrian sections of the Providence Mountains in the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on olenellid trilobites in the Latham Shale. As early as the 1960s, rockhounds collecting opalite and petrified wood discovered fossilized plant material and vertebrate bones in areas now in south-central MOJA and notified paleontologists at San Bernardino County Museum (SBCM). This resulted in one of the only paleontological excavations in what is now MOJA, with collections of Miocene vertebrate fauna including camelid and early rhino material. More recently, James Hagadorn reported the late-surviving Ediacaran organism Swartpuntia in an assemblage from the Wood Canyon Formation of the Kelso Mountains in 2000. From October 2021 to January 2022, a field inventory was conducted to determine the scope and distribution (both temporal and geospatial) of paleontological resources at MOJA. An additional week of field work was conducted in December 2022. A total of thirteen localities were documented and field-checked throughout the preserve. These localities resulted from field checks of previously reported fossil sites, as well as new discoveries based on literature searches and information provided by MOJA staff. The findings of this report constitute a baseline of paleontology resource data for MOJA, and reflect the current understanding of the scope, significance, and distribution of MOJA’s fossil record. This report provides a foundation for the management and protection of paleontological resources within MOJA and supports future education, interpretation,
