In this article, the discrete element method is used to investigate the coarse particle material close-grained space structure evolutionary process submitted to a vibrating compressive load. 2-D generation algorithm about irregular particle generation and particle contact interface generation was adopted. Irregular particles were randomly generated in the designated categories with this algorithm. The microcosmic material parameters are endowed to irregular particle and pore space. The microcosmic material parameters are also endowed to water. The irregular micro-particles close-grained process was been analyzed under vibrating compressive. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the coarse-grained soil Irregular particles compacting effect of the simulation results with the actual theoretic situation in the basic line. The Irregular particles were whirligig and movement, location of the rearrangement as a whole to show the close-grained process. The use of discrete element method can be clearly informed that the simulation of the embankment particles in the body vibration. This research offers a new idea and continent method for compaction dense of hydrous embankment.

It has proven difficult to describe the kinematics in irregular waves satisfactorily, in particular for the surface zone in broad-banded waves. A Lagrangian approach offers distinct advantages in this respect, eliminating the need for extrapolation of solutions or “stretching” of coordinates. This paper presents a model of irregular waves based on superposition of linear Lagrangian wave components, using an iterative method to obtain the Eulerian solution. This approach yields theoretically consistent results everywhere in the waves, and comparisons with wave flume measurements show good agreement. Also, the linear Lagrangian model includes wave interactions that would be nonlinear in an Eulerian formulation.

Анотація:
The present paper intends to examine the trend of short-term returns generated by buyback offers in India; and other related aspects to such offers like investors’ response, and the method of repurchase used. A sample of 589 companies has been selected for the study. These are the “Indian companies across sectors which have initiated buyback offers, and are listed at Bombay Stock Exchange, and/or National Stock Exchange” from 1999-00 to 2020-21. The secondary data has been derived from the PRIME database for a time period of 22 years. Descriptive Statistics, Moving Average, and Bi-variate Regression analysis has been employed for investigation. The analysis has revealed an irregular trend of short-term returns which have been created through buyback events. The corporate sector is seen to be moving from the Stock Exchange Method of buyback to the Tender Method, along with encouraging shareholders’ response rate to buyback offers.

This paper aims to identify and analyze the advantages and disadvantages associated with building plan shape considering engineering and architectural needs and to quantify them in terms of the common language of costs and benefits. Parameters that measure the overall seismic response of a given plan shape were defined. Seismic behavior of the irregular shapes can be improved by means of special engineering efforts that provide enough in-plane slab stiffness and a distribution of lateral stiffness and strength so that torsion and distortion can be minimized. The proposed procedure of integral evaluation of buildings was applied to two specific examples, one regular and one irregular building, both with similar characteristics. The irregular building was seismically adequate by means of several dynamic analyses and a careful structural design so that it reached an acceptable level of seismic performance. For this example, the irregular building offers long-term benefits that exceed the initial investment required to improve its seismic behavior.

Biomaterials display microstructures that are geometrically irregular and functionally efficient. Understanding the role of irregularity in determining material properties offers a new path to engineer materials with superior functionalities, such as imperfection insensitivity, enhanced impact absorption, and stress redirection. We uncover fundamental, probabilistic structure–property relationships using a growth-inspired program that evokes the formation of stochastic architectures in natural systems. This virtual growth program imposes a set of local rules on a limited number of basic elements. It generates materials that exhibit a large variation in functional properties starting from very limited initial resources, which echoes the diversity of biological systems. We identify basic rules to control mechanical properties by independently varying the microstructure’s topology and geometry in a general, graph-based representation of irregular materials.

Dynamics of many complex systems, from weather and climate to spread of infectious diseases, can be described by partial differential equations (PDEs). Such PDEs involve unknown function(s), partial derivatives, and typically multiple independent variables. The traditional numerical methods for solving PDEs assume that the data are observed on a regular grid. However, in many applications, for example, weather and air pollution monitoring delivered by the arbitrary located weather stations of the National Weather Services, data records are irregularly spaced. Furthermore, in problems involving prediction analytics such as forecasting wildfire smoke plumes, the primary focus may be on a set of irregular locations associated with urban development. In recent years, deep learning (DL) methods and, in particular, graph neural networks (GNNs) have emerged as a new promising tool that can complement traditional PDE solvers in scenarios of the irregular spaced data, contributing to the newest research trend of physics informed machine learning (PIML). However, most existing PIML methods tend to be limited in their ability to describe higher dimensional structural properties exhibited by real world phenomena, especially, ones that live on manifolds. To address this fundamental challenge, we bring the elements of the Hodge theory and, in particular, simplicial convolution defined on the Hodge Laplacian to the emerging nexus of DL and PDEs. In contrast to conventional Laplacian and the associated convolution operation, the simplicial convolution allows us to rigorously describe diffusion across higher order structures and to better approximate the complex underlying topology and geometry of the data. The new approach, Simplicial Neural Networks for Partial Differential Equations (SNN PDE) offers a computationally efficient yet effective solution for time dependent PDEs. Our studies of a broad range of synthetic data and wildfire processes demonstrate that SNN PDE improves upon state of the art baselines in handling unstructured grids and irregular time intervals of complex physical systems and offers competitive forecasting capabilities for weather and air quality forecasting.

AbstractAlmost all Member States in the European Union currently make use, or in the past have made use of some form of regularisation of irregular immigrants, although to greatly varying degrees, in different ways and as a rule only reluctantly. A distinct feature of recent regularisations has been the shift towards a humanitarian justification of regularisation measures. In this context, regularisation has become reframed as an issue of the protection of irregular migrants’ human rights. As a result, regularisation has to some extent also been turned from a political tool in managing migration into an issue of international, European and national human rights law. While a human rights framework indeed offers a powerful rationale and at times compelling reasons why states ought to afford a legal status to irregular migrants, I argue that a human rights based approach must always be complemented by pragmatic considerations, as a human rights based justification of regularisation alone will be insufficient to find adequate responses to the changing presence of irregular migrants in the EU, not all of which can invoke human rights based claims to residence.

Les critères pour la participation et pour l’exclusion aux procédures d’appels d’offres : une approche comparée entre Brésil, France et Italie. Le procès de sélection des fournisseurs est un défi fondamental pour toute organisation. Dans l’administration publique ce thème devient encore plus complexe, compte tenu des dispositions légales en vigueur qui visent essentiellement à garantir le respect du principe constitutionnel de l’égalité, "pierre angulaire" de tout système juridique. L’administration publique a le droit de définir les critères de participation et de comparer les offres avancées par les différentes parties intéressées à exercer un emploi, fournir un bien ou un service afin de choisir l’offre la plus avantageuse. De l’autre côté, les parties concernées ont le droit de participer à une procédure administrative appropriée qui prévoit un traitement égalitaire et non discriminatoire pour les différents soumissionnaires. Contrairement aux particuliers, les administrations publiques n’ont pas la liberté de choisir de manière discrétionnaire les acteurs avec qui négocier, mais elles doivent prendre cette décision dans le domaine de procédures garantissant, d’un côté, l’accord le plus favorable et l’exécution dans de meilleures conditions de tranquillité et de sécurité et, de l’autre côté, la possibilité pour les opérateurs économiques de concourir sur un pied d’égalité pour l’attribution du marché. Le pouvoir discrétionnaire est souvent considéré comme le remède nécessaire contre la rigidité des règles, les automatismes qui ne permettent pas d’adapter l’appel d’offres et l’adjudication aux exigences concrètes de l’administration, le formalisme dominant qui souvent sépare inévitablement la décision légitime de celle correcte et efficace. L’objectif est de fixer les limites du pouvoir discrétionnaire dont l’administration publique dispose afin de déterminer l’objet, établir les conditions nécessaires pour participer aux appels d’offres et leurs hypothèses d’exclusion. Ces conditions doivent être appliquées sans violer le principe d’égalité et en fonction de critères de logique, du raisonnable et de proportionnalité non discriminatoires, de manière à ne pas représenter une restriction illégitime au droit des entreprises opérant sur le marché. Le but de la thèse est de trouver la ligne de séparation entre le droit de l’administration publique de garantir les conditions de capacité technique, d’organisation, économique et financière, ainsi que d’établir les causes de l’exclusion de l’appel d’offres et le droit des entreprises de ne pas les empêcher d’y participer à cause de critères horribles qui violent les principes d’égalité et de la libre concurrence. L’étude se compose de deux parties. La Première Partie aborde les thèmes qui permettront aux lecteurs des trois pays de connaitre les aspects généraux concernant la discipline dans chacun d’eux par l’analyse de l’évolution historique et réglementaire du système des sources du droit de l’Union européenne (l’étude des différences entre l’UE et le Mercosur, la transposition des règles communautaires et leur mise en œuvre, le dialogue des sources) et l’analyse de la procédure de sélection du contractant (qui contient une petite description des procédures dans les trois pays). Il s’agit, donc, d’une partie plus conceptuelle et "introductive" au sens large. La Deuxième Partie analyse les critères de participation et d’exclusion des procédures d’appels d’offres, à travers l’étude des critères généraux (ou de moralité), les critères spéciaux (critères techniques, économiques et financiers) et les règles de procédure qui permettent de mettre en œuvre la procédure de sélection du contractant. Eligibility and exclusion requirements for bidding: a comparative approach between Brazil, France and Italy: The supplier selection process is a fundamental challenge for any organization. In public administration this subject becomes even more complex, taking into account the legal provisions in force which essentially aim at guaranteeing respect for the constitutional principle of equality, "cornerstone" of any legal system. The public administration has the right to define the criteria for participation and to compare the offers put forward by the different parties interested in exercising a job, providing a good or service in order to choose the most advantageous offer. On the other hand, the parties concerned have the right to participate in an appropriate administrative procedure which provides for equal and non-discriminatory treatment for the various tenderers. Unlike individuals, public administrations do not have the freedom to choose the actors with whom to negotiate in a discretionary manner, but they must take this decision in the area of procedures guaranteeing, on the one hand, the most favorable agreement and the 'execution in better conditions of tranquility and security and, on the other hand, the possibility for economic operators to compete on an equal footing for the award of the contract. Discretionary power is often considered the necessary remedy against the rigidity of the rules, the automatic mechanisms which do not allow the tendering and adjudication to be adapted to the concrete requirements of the administration, the dominant formalism which often inevitably separates the legitimate decision of the correct and effective one. The objective is to set the limits of the discretionary power that the public administration has in order to determine the subject, establish the conditions necessary to participate in tenders and their exclusion hypotheses. These conditions must be applied without violating the principle of equality and on the basis of criteria of logic, reasonableness and non-discriminatory proportionality, so as not to represent an illegitimate restriction on the rights of undertakings operating on the market. The aim of the thesis is to find the dividing line between the right of the public administration to guarantee the conditions of technical, organizational, economic and financial capacity, as well as to establish the causes of the exclusion of tendering and the right of companies not to prevent them from participating because of horrible criteria which violate the principles of equality and free competition. The study consists of two parts. The First Part addresses the themes which will enable readers from the three countries to know the general aspects concerning the discipline in each of them by analyzing the historical and regulatory evolution of the system of sources of European Union law (l study of the differences between the EU and Mercosur, the transposition of Community rules and their implementation, the dialogue of sources) and the analysis of the contractor selection procedure (which contains a short description of the procedures in the three country). It is, therefore, a more conceptual and "introductory" part in the broad sense. The Second Part analyzes the criteria for participation and exclusion from tendering procedures, through the study of general criteria (or of morality), special criteria (technical, economic and financial criteria) and the rules of procedures which allow the contractor selection procedure to be implemented. We also examine the role of those responsible for the procedure and the tender committee, the characteristics of the single European market document (ESPD), the regularization of irregular tenders and the company rating which is only provided for in the Italian legislation

This book investigates where the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) as a living instrument stands on migration and rights of migrants. Individual chapters in the volume address how the tension between the textual silence of the Convention concerning migrant rights and the significant number of cases that the ECHR have addressed concerning migration and rights migrants are resolved or left to the discretion of European states. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of cases brought by migrants in different stages of migration covering the right to flee, who is entitled to enter and remain Europe, what treatment is owed to them when they come within the jurisdiction of a Council of Europe member state, not only to those who recently entered Europe, but also to those who have been living in Europe for a longer time. As such, the book evaluates the case law of the ECHR concerning different categories of migrants including asylum seekers, irregular migrants, those who have migrated through domestic lawful routes and those who are currently second- or third-generation migrants in Europe. The broad perspective adopted by the book allows for a systematic analysis of how and to what extent the Convention protects non-refoulement, migrant children, family rights of migrants, status rights of migrants, economic and social rights of migrants, as well as cultural and religious rights of migrants.

AbstractThis paper presents a case study on the use of 3DCP to qualify rocky pontoons with spaces for recreational use—namely sitting areas, circulation trails and fishing activities—and biodiversity protection—providing habitat and refuge for native marine species—with a focus on the challenges and opportunities associated with 3DCP prefabrication for such a complex topographical context. We first discuss the benefits and disadvantages of 3DCP over traditional methods for retrofitting strategies with the support of state-of-the-art literature review. We then present a methodology for an experimental case study, organized in three stages: (1) a photogrammetric survey and digital reconstruction of the site´s rocky landscape, (2) the creation of a tool to generate and optimize custom-fit slabs based on their location on site, intended use and role in the protection of the natural ecosystem, and (3) the robotic fabrication of these slabs through 3DCP. Finally, we present our key findings, revealing that 3DCP offers a viable and more efficient alternative for appropriating and revitalizing sites with a disorderly and highly complex topography.

AbstractThis chapter evaluates the initiation and perpetuation of migratory flows from Afghanistan and Syria to Europe, which operate through the Eastern Mediterranean corridor over the decades. It links the notion of root causes of migration to the fragile or weak statehood and protracted refugee situations. While the concepts of “root causes” and “fragile or weak state” may be contested, they hold analytical value as they relate to various aspects of irregular migration systems between the Global North and Global South. Due to the scarcity of research on the relationship between weak statehood, refugee flows, and irregular migration, and their implications on migratory systems between the Global South and Global North, exploring this connection through an analytical framework applied to selected case studies becomes a critical research area. The selected cases, namely migration flows from Afghanistan and Syria to Europe via the Eastern Mediterranean, offer a framework for better understanding the root causes of irregular migratory flows that impact the broader geography of the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe. Therefore, by focusing on weak statehood, this chapter explores the dynamics and mechanisms of root causes of irregular migration and asylum flows. It aims to explain why and how people choose specific routes over time. The ongoing debate on this topic also helps assess policy outcomes for the effective governance of irregular migration and refugee flows.

AbstractThis chapter analyses how return and reintegration programmes for irregular migrants and rejected asylum seekers construct and create vulnerabilities. The chapter analyses the lived experiences of returnees in Edo state, Nigeria. It examines the experiences of irregular migrants and rejected asylum seekers who were returned to their places of origin through AVRR programmes or other forms of return assistance programmes. First it examines the context of return migration in Nigeria and the legal-bureaucratic construction of vulnerability in the Nigerian context. Then it proceeds to analyse the efforts of the Nigerian state in implementing return and reintegration programmes. Based on 15 in-depth interviews with returnees, civil society organisations and government officials, it examines the experiences of returnees and their perspectives of vulnerability and precarity in returning to their communities of origin. The research finds that poorly implemented return programmes, may worsen the vulnerabilities of migrants instead of promoting their integration. However, migrants may reinforce their vulnerabilities in order to benefit from perceived advantages offered by the state or international organisations. Lastly, family and community efforts help migrants cope with the vulnerabilities they are exposed to in their communities of origin.

AbstractJust after the local elections in 2019, irregular migrants in Istanbul faced a months-long crackdown. The Ministry of Interior from the Justice and Development Party government (known as AK Party or AKP) gave Syrians until 20 August 2019 to return to the cities in which they were first registered. Although the time period was eventually extended, the internal controls for migrants became stricter. Migrants found themselves frequently stopped by police, and officers visited registration addresses to check if they were occupied. If irregularities were discovered, the official directive was that Syrians should be returned to the cities in which they were first registered. For non-Syrian migrants without registration, the result of police stops was often being confined to pre-detention centres. According to the Head of the Directorate General Management of Migration (DGMM) of the time, Abdullah Ayaz, “Operations in Istanbul target irregular migrants such as Afghans and Pakistanis. Even if Syrians are found without registration at all, they are not deported, unlike the claims in the media. It is not possible to issue deportation decisions legally about Syrians due to the conditions in Syria” (AA 2019).

Abstract Chapter 3 argues that political communities should not be free to decide whether to deny citizenship, and its substantial protections, to infants based on their parents’ immigration status, actions, or allegiances. Territorial birthright citizenship offers the promise of integration on equal terms with other citizens. In the United States, equal protection of the law for the children of irregular immigrants means a free public education, on the grounds that “legislation directing the onus of a parent’s misconduct against his children” that “does not comport with fundamental conceptions of justice” (Plyler v. Doe 1982, 220). Immigrants who entered a country without authorization as children should not be held culpable for their parents’ immigration violations. Children of irregular immigrants deserve separate consideration for immigration benefits and citizenship apart from citizens’ judgment of their parents’ conduct as irregular entrants or visa overstayers.

“Divide and conquer, just like Riemann sums in calculus” offers a basic introduction for how to estimate—with any desired non-zero margin of error—the area of an irregular shape. For an initial underestimate, readers are encouraged to draw a large rectangle that fits inside the irregular shape and then use the grade school formula to calculate the rectangle’s area: area equals length times width. To refine this underestimate, readers learn to draw multiple smaller rectangles inside the shape whose areas they also sum. An analogous method is provided for overestimates. The discussion concerning how to obtain underestimates or overestimates with any desired margin of error is illustrated with numerous hand-drawn sketches. Generating smooth surfaces of arbitrary topology is still a challenge. This paper considers the problem of creating a smooth parametric polynomial surface interpolating the vertices of an irregular triangular or quadrilateral mesh of arbitrary topological type. The surface is overall tangent plane continuous without any singular points and without any singular parameterizations. We particularly focus on design issues related to this spline model which offers several degrees of freedom. In particular, an exhaustive description of all available degrees of freedom is given and their geometric interpretation for shape design is specified. An extension of the model allows for additional normal vector interpolation and increases thus the number of design parameters. Finally several design issues are discussed and illustrated.

Abstract In order to assess the reliability of offshore structures facing extreme environmental conditions, sea keeping tests are performed at model scale in experimental or numerical wave tanks. The scope of the present paper is limited to the generation of wave condition for such tests. The vast majority of industrial practices follow a stochastic approach. For each design sea state, several realizations of long irregular wave sequences are generated. The qualification of the waves mainly relies on the analysis of the mean spectrum and the ensemble crest height distribution at the structure (target) location (Xt). However, the wave propagation from the wavemaker to Xt is affected by nonlinear mechanisms and dissipation phenomena which lead to uncontrolled variations of the quantities of interest. To face those issues, the most advanced wave generation procedures usually focus on the quality of the wave spectrum at Xt, iterating on the wave maker motions. Nevertheless, depending on Xt, the crest height statistics can significantly differ. For instance with steep and narrow-banded unidirectional sea states, the distributions obtained at target locations far from the wave maker (Xt > 20λp, λp being the peak wavelength) enlighten a significant number of extreme events that are likely to strongly affect the response of the tested structure. On those grounds, the present study proposes a procedure that offers the possibility to reproduce those extreme statistics at locations closer to the wavemaker. The framework is limited to non breaking unidirectional waves. The procedure is numerically tested with the open-source nonlinear potential wave solver HOS-NWT. The study opens the way to an accurate control of the wave statistics at any location in a wave tank environment.

We introduce a highly flexible method for the assembly of microscale components using laser-activated bubble latching. Arbitrary structures are created through combining directed fluidic assembly and surface tension-driven latching. The bubbles are generated through laser degradation of the SU-8 tile. This gives the user control over the time and location of latching, as opposed to predefined latching locations in other microscale assembly methods. Shear force experiments show that each bubble is able to support a tensile force of 0.33μN. By utilizing the compressibility of bubbles, assembled objects are switched between rigid and flexible states, facilitating motion through irregular channel geometries. Further, through the use of bubble hinging at component corners, reconfiguration is quickly and effectively achieved. This novel hybrid approach to the assembly of microscale components offers significant controllability to the user.

A three dimensional time-domain model, based on Cummins equation, has been developed for an axisymmetric point absorbing wave energy converter (WEC) with an irregular cross section. This model incorporates a number of nonlinearities to accurately account for the dynamics of the device: hydrostatic restoring, motion constraints, saturation of the power-take-off force, and kinematic nonlinearities. Here, an interpolation model of the hydrostatic restoring reaction is developed and compared with a surface integral based method. The effects of these nonlinear hydrostatic models on device dynamics are explored by comparing predictions against those of a linear model. For the studied WEC, the interpolation model offers a large improvement over a linear model and is roughly two orders-of-magnitude less computationally expensive than the surface integral based method.

<p>Prestressed transfer plate consists of a thick cast in-situ post-tensioned concrete slab supporting multi-storey shear walls at building transition level. Compared to conventional reinforced concrete transfer beams, it offers savings in concrete volume of 10-15%, cuts steel reinforcement content by 35-50% and significantly reduces formwork usage which eventually helps to achieve lower carbon footprint for a more sustainable transfer floor construction. The design of prestressed transfer plates is complicated owing to its two-way bending behaviour and irregular load path from reactions of numerous shear walls. This paper elaborates the analysis of prestressed transfer plates and discusses their interaction effect with shear walls. It also explains the design of interfacing shear for thick plate construction with multi-layer casting in addition to various design considerations including flexural and punching shear design based on relevant codes of practice.</p>

Considerable attention in recent years has been directed towards the development of technology for the measurement of corneal topography. These developing techniques have significant applications in contact lens design and fitting, refractive manipulations of the cornea, and in the clinical and laboratory study of corneal diseases (Maguire and Bourne, 1989; McDonnell et al, 1989). There is a great deal of information contained in the typical representations of corneal data from commercial photokeratoscopes, and one of the more common presentation formats is a color coded map of corneal refractive power (Bogan et al, 1990; Maguire et al, 1987). This type of representation is useful, but quantitative representations of this information promise to enhance the utility of photokeratoscopy (Dingeldein et al, 1989). This paper describes a method for summarizing the information generated by photokeratoscopes. This method is particularly applicable to the description of astigmatism, and offers a new technique for conceptualizing and quantifying irregular astigmatism.

This paper addresses a new procedure for spatial and statistical analysis of water mains failure. We use this methodology to analyze and predict the spatial behavior of failure on the water mains network. The analysis is based on data from Sanandaj city in Iran over a 10 year period. It includes 395 mains failure which they were geocoded as discrete points. Prediction maps are constructed using different spatial interpolation methods, namely; the Thiessen polygons, the Density estimation, and the Triangulated Irregular Network model (TIN). Thiessen polygons are used for proximity and area allocation analysis of failure points. Density of failure points is calculated for each cell by summing the number of failures in the cell. TIN model generates a surface form interpolation of failure density. The study indicates that the construction of continuous surface from point dataset offers an interesting tool for the prediction of water main failures. It also provides comprehensive spatial information system that can be easily used by utility managers as a decision-support tool to set up and compare strategies for the renewal of water mains.

Many gastric motility disorders, including gastroparesis, are caused by dysrhythmias occurring in the stomach musculature. Microwave ablation (MWA) offers potential as a minimally invasive endoscopic approach for targeted thermal destruction of the gastric musculature to disrupt irregular electrical rhythm within the stomach wall. An experimental study was conducted in a gel phantom to analyze the transient heating profile of a water-cooled 2.45 GHz MWA antenna enclosed within a PET balloon. Fiber-optic temperature sensors were used to collect temperature data at distances 1.5–7.5 mm from the balloon surface. Ablation profiles were also characterized in ex vivo porcine skeletal muscle. With 20 W applied power and cooling water temperature of 5 °C, temperature measured at 3.5 mm from the balloon surface exceeded the temperature at 1.5 mm from the balloon surface by 3 °C. In ex vivo tissue, for 40 W applied power, tissue within 2 mm of the balloon surface remained unablated. With adequate cooling and power, it may be feasible to thermally spare tissue within 2 mm of the MWA balloon applicator.

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) offers access to the entire volume of a printed artifact during the build operation. This makes it possible to embedding foreign components (e.g. sensors, motors, actuators) into AM parts, thus enabling multifunctional products directly from the build tray. However, the process of designing for embedding currently requires extensive designer expertise in AM. Current methods rely on a designer to select an orientation for the embedded component and design a cavity such that the component can be successfully embedded without compromising the print quality of the final part. For irregular geometries, additional design knowledge is required to prepare a shape converter: a secondary piece to ensure a flush deposition surface on top of the embedded component. This research aims to develop a tool to automate these different design decisions for in-situ embedding, thus reducing the need for expert design knowledge. A three-stage process is proposed to 1) find the optimum orientation based on cavity volume and cross-section area, 2) create the necessary cavity geometry to successfully insert the component, and 3) perform a Boolean operation to create the digital design for any requisite shape converter. Performance of the tool is demonstrated with four test cases with varying levels of geometric complexity. These test cases show that the proposed process successfully handles arbitrary embedded geometries, though several limitations are noted for future work.

Floating oscillating-bodies are a kind of wave energy converter developed for harvesting the great amount of energy related to water waves; see Falcão [1] for a review. In this paper a particular energy converter model is considered. A nonlinear analysis of its dynamic behavior is conducted both in the time and the frequency domains. The model involves a tightly moored single-body floating wave energy converter. It captures motion in the horizontal and vertical directions. The nonlinear stiffness and damping forces are functions of the horizontal and vertical displacements and velocities and make the system a nonlinear one. In addition to the time-domain analysis of the nonlinear behavior of the system, the method of equivalent linearization is used to determine iteratively the effective linear stiffness and damping matrices and the response of the buoy in the frequency domain. The analysis pertains to the surge and the heave directions response of the wave energy converter under harmonic mono-frequency excitation (regular waves). The reliability of the linearization based approach is demonstrated by comparison with time domain integration data. This approach offers the appealing feature of conducting efficiently a variety of parameter studies which can expedite preliminary evaluations, inter alia, of competing design scenarios for the energy converter. Suggestions for extending this approach to the case of fully nonlinear and random irregular waves are also included.

In situations like these, chain-referral sampling techniques like Respondent-Driven Surveys (RDS) offer an effective solution. RDS, a variant of network sampling sometimes referred to as “snowball” sampling, estimates weights based on the network structures of friends and acquaintances formed during the sampling process. This ensures the samples are representative of the larger population. However, one significant limitation of these methods is the rigidity of the weights. When faced with participant attrition, recalibrating these weights to ensure continued representation poses a challenge. This technical note introduces a straightforward methodology to account for such attrition. Its applicability is demonstrated through a survey targeting Venezuelan migrants in Ecuador and Peru.

Displacement forms part of virtually any major crisis. It introduces a level of complexity when providing social assistance that leads to a specific, usually context-dependent set of challenges. It is widely recognised that the vast majority of displaced people will travel as short a distance as possible to reach safety, whether as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), refugees or irregular migrants in neighbouring countries. Displaced people are disproportionately hosted in low- and middle-income countries, and the length of their displacement is increasing. This highlights the urgent priority of displacement; indeed, it has received sustained attention from the highest levels of global decision-making, particularly since 2016, including two Global Compacts in 2018 (Global Compact for Migration, Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration). Although some have argued that such global summits offer a replacement for meaningful action, these events at least highlight clear political will to shift the emphasis from humanitarian responses to a much longer-term development focus. Interest in social assistance and displacement has also grown since 2018 and resulting policy must respond to this concern for more sustainable responses. High-level commitments are slowly filtering through to policy, while recent research has provided clear frameworks for analysing developing policy approaches. Gaps remain in the analysis of policy implementation and in the assessment of how to access social assistance beyond official state channels.
