Policies to promote renewable electricity are increasingly seen as a way to reduce the negative environmental impacts associated with electricity consumption and meet growing electricity demand. This paper reviews the international experience with one such policy, namely, renewable energy certificates, and considers important design aspects of a national green certificate system. Within a South African context, a green certificate system would provide a mechanism with which to verify compliance with any future renewable energy obligations, and would encourage renewable electricity generation in the current monopoly environment. In terms of a national green certificate framework, international experience has shown that renewable energy certificates must be both accredited and standardized, with enforcement of penalties for non-compliance with renewable energy quotas. Above all, a long-term and stable policy environment is crucial for developing renewable energy markets.

BCIA has expanded options for earning inexpensive and accessible continuing education, including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). BCIA continues to promote ethics education to protect clients, professionals, and the credibility of our field. More educators teach BCIA's HRV Biofeedback Certificate of Completion didactic course to students and professionals. BCIA's Job Board has helped employers recruit our skilled certificants. Finally, there is a need for infection prevention standards in private practice.

Resumen: En el Reglamento (UE) 650/2012 no existe una norma específica que regule la competencia en materia de expedición de certificados sucesorios nacionales, incluso no se utiliza nunca la expresión “certificado sucesorio nacional” como tal, sino que los denomina “documentos internos empleados en los Estados miembros para fines similares” a los de los certificados sucesorios europeos. Sin embargo, dicho instrumento internacional sí que contempla una regulación específica relativa a la competencia en materia de expedición de certificados sucesorios europeos (art. 64 Reglamento (UE) 650/2012). Pues bien, ante la “aparente laguna legal” en relación con los certificados sucesorios nacionales, se debe determinar, si dentro del concepto de “totalidad de la sucesión” -que indica el ámbito de aplicación del Reglamento-, se encuentran dichos certificados. En cuyo caso, las normas de competencia del capítulo II del Reglamento sucesorio serían de aplicación a la expedición de los certificados sucesorios nacionales y a los procedimientos relativos a ellos. En este sentido, la Sentencia del TJUE 21 junio 2018, Vincent Pierre Oberle, C-20/17 y, sobre todo, las Conclusiones del Abogado General Sr. M. Szpunar, han venido a solucionar esta “laguna legal”, así como otras cuestiones planteadas de gran importancia, en relación con el asunto concreto que se estaba dirimiendo. Se debe destacar que, con el fallo de la sentencia, se resuelve una cuestión que puede ser relevante para todos los Estados miembros en los que se contempla la posibilidad de que los órganos judiciales expidan certificados sucesorios nacionales.Palabras clave: Reglamento (UE) 650/2012, certificado sucesorio nacional, certificado sucesorio europeo, competencia internacional, tribunal, notario, resolución, totalidad de la sucesión.Abstract: In Regulation (EU) 650/2012 there is no specific provision that regulates the competence in the issue of national certificates of succession, even the term “national succession of certificate” is never used as such, but rather calls them “internal documents used for similar purposes in the Member States” to those of European Certificates of Succession. However, this international instrument contemplates a specific regulation governing the competence in the issue of European Certificate of Succession (art. 64 Regulation (EU) 650/2012). Well, given the “apparent legal loophole” in relation to national certificates of succession, it must be determined, if within the concept “succession as a whole” -which indicates the scope of the Regulation-, such certificates are found. In which case, the jurisdiction rules of Chapter II of this Regulation would apply to the issuance of national certificates of succession and the procedures related to them. In this regard, the CJEU Judgement of 21st June 2018, Vincent Pierre Oberle, C-20/17, and, above all, the Conclusions of the Advocate General Mr. M. Szpunar, have come to solve this “legal loophole”, as well as others issues raised of great importance, in relation to the specific issue that was being settled. This case, on the other hand, involves the resolution of an issue which could be relevant to all Member States where provision is made for judicial authorities to issue national certificates of succession. In this paper, the author examines the role of international law on the development of Canada’s security certificate regime. On the one hand, international law has had a perceptible impact on judicial reasoning, contributing to judges’ increased willingness to recognize the rights of non-citizens named in certificates and to envision better ways of balancing national security and human rights. On the other hand, the judiciary’s attitudes towards international law as non-binding sources of insight akin to foreign law has reinforced disparities in levels of rights afforded by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and those afforded by international human rights. Viewed skeptically, one might argue that the judiciary’s selective result-oriented use of international law and foreign law helped it spread a veneer of legality over an otherwise unaltered and discriminatory certificate regime. Reviewing Charkaoui I and II in international context, the author suggests an alternative account. He suggests that the judiciary’s use of international law and foreign law, although highly ambiguous and ambivalent, both was principled and has progressively brought named persons’ Charter rights more closely in step with their international human rights. Although the current balance between national security and human rights is imperfect, the way in which aspects of Canada’s certificate regime have been improved suggests that international law is a valuable resource for protecting the rights of non-citizens in Canada.

The global volume of travel has grown steadily for decades and hence the border closures and travel restrictions in response to COVID-19 have created an unforeseen impact on the number of international border crossings. In air traffic alone the data show a striking 75.6% decrease in the number of scheduled international passengers. We might hasten to think that the strict travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 crisis have in principle treated mobile populations equally – for once we have all been banned from travelling. We could even consider the recent initiatives to introduce “vaccination certificates” as a fair and democratic way to reintroduce safe international travelling. In reality, the idea of a COVID-19 certificate is but a new layer in the broader landscape of highly uneven global mobility where travellers’ citizenship and place of origin truly matter. This article discusses some of the major inequalities embedded in the global mobility regime and argues that the idea of the COVID-19 certificate as an equaliser remains completely disconnected from these underlying realities. To conclude, the article discusses problems related to uneven access to digital travel documents, such as the proposed COVID-19 certificate.

This study evaluates the agreement of nosologic coding of cardiovascular causes of death between a Chilean coder and one in the United States, in a stratified random sample of death certificates of persons aged ≥ 60, issued in 2008 in the Valparaíso and Metropolitan regions, Chile. All causes of death were converted to ICD-10 codes in parallel by both coders. Concordance was analyzed with inter-coder agreement and Cohen’s kappa coefficient by level of specification ICD-10 code for the underlying cause and the total causes of death coding. Inter-coder agreement was 76.4% for all causes of death and 80.6% for the underlying cause (agreement at the four-digit level), with differences by the level of specification of the ICD-10 code, by line of the death certificate, and by number of causes of death per certificate. Cohen's kappa coefficient was 0.76 (95%CI: 0.68-0.84) for the underlying cause and 0.75 (95%CI: 0.74-0.77) for the total causes of death. In conclusion, causes of death coding and inter-coder agreement for cardiovascular diseases in two regions of Chile are comparable to an external benchmark and with reports from other countries.

In many countries, a birth certificate is necessary to attend school, receive health care, inherit property, open a bank account, gain access to credit, obtain other forms of identification, vote, and receive a death certificate (Hunter and Brill, 2016). A birth certificate is proof of identity, citizenship and serves as a gateway to the realisation of other rights for children. It also serves as evidence that a child has been registered. Using evidence from the Tanzania National Panel Data 2010/11, I show that birth registration predicts lower odds for possessing a birth certificate for children in Tanzania. Instead, the education of the mother and the ability of households to pay for their own malaria bed nets, serve as the strongest predictors for possessing birth certificates in Tanzania. The article concludes with recommendations for improving birth registration and certification in Tanzania.

ObjectiveTo determine whether coding a developmental disability as the underlying cause of death obscures mortality trends of adults with developmental disability.DesignNational Vital Statistics System 2012–2016 US Multiple Cause-of-Death Mortality files.SettingUSA.ParticipantsAdults with a developmental disability indicated on their death certificate aged 18 through 103 at the time of death. The study population included 33 154 adults who died between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2016.Primary outcome and measuresDecedents with a developmental disability coded as the underlying cause of death on the death certificate were identified using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision code for intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or other developmental disability. Death certificates that coded a developmental disability as the underlying cause of death were revised using a sequential underlying cause of death revision process.ResultsThere were 33 154 decedents with developmental disability: 7901 with intellectual disability, 11 895 with cerebral palsy, 9114 with Down syndrome, 2479 with other developmental disabilities and 1765 with multiple developmental disabilities. Among all decedents, 48.5% had a developmental disability coded as the underlying cause of death, obscuring higher rates of choking deaths among all decedents and dementia and Alzheimer’s disease among decedents with Down syndrome.ConclusionDeath certificates that recorded the developmental disability in Part I of the death certificate were more likely to code disability as the underlying cause of death. While revising these death certificates provides a short-term corrective to mortality trends for this population, the severity and extent of this problem warrants a long-term change involving more precise instructions to record developmental disabilities only in Part II of the death certificate.

This study investigates the impact of students’ participation in the certificate program offered by the Asian Studies Center (ASC) at the University of Pittsburgh on their perception of global competency and skills development for international careers. Undergraduate and graduate students who were enrolled in the ASC’s certificate program as of March 16, 2012 (n=125) participated in an on-line student survey. Data are used to provide a descriptive analysis, significance tests, and a multiple regression analysis that examine six research questions.

The descriptive analysis explores students’ characteristics, satisfaction with the certificate program, international experience, foreign language capability, and the extent to which the certificate program increases their global competency and skills for international careers. Tests were conducted to examine whether the differences in pre-post increases in students’ perception of their global competency and skills development for international careers were statistically significant for all respondents as well as between disaggregated groups. The multiple regression analysis tests the correlation between three independent variables (courses taken in the certificate program, center activity participation, and students’ international experience) and each of the two dependent variables (students’ perception of increased global competency and students’ perception of improved skills for international careers).

Findings show that significantly different changes in students’ perception of their global competency and skills development for international careers exist before their participation in the certificate program and after their participation in the certificate program. Students who stayed 1-6 months in an Asian country have the most significant increases in their perception of their global competency after their participation in the certificate program. Senior students have the most significant increases in their perception of their global competency and skills for international careers after their participation in the certificate program.

Students’ international experience and courses taken in the certificate program are important variables related to their perception of increased global competency and improved skill for international careers. The effect of students’ international experience is greater than courses taken in the certificate program on their perception of their increased global competency and improved skills for international careers.

Established in 2003, the Kimberley Process (KP) is a binding agreement; backed by the United Nations, that unites civil societies, state actors and the diamond industry to safeguard ‘conflict' diamonds from entering legitimate rough diamond trade around the world. The unique international tripartite organization is voluntary but mandates state participants to abide by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) minimum requirements in order to stem the financing or wars against legitimate governments. This study represents the first to explore the communications within the KP. The linguistic turn relies on Classical rhetoric theory with an emphasis on Aristotle's three appeals of persuasion (“pisteis”): ethos, logos and pathos of elite actors in the KP. As for the precise nature of the contribution to rhetorical analysis, this project is best characterised as an application of Classical principals of rhetorical analysis, rather than as a development of theory. A comprehensive literature review of the KP and KPCS is another distinctive contribution. Furthermore, this academic endeavour offers a unique method as shown in the observation of a KP Intersessional meeting. Supplementing the qualitative inquiry, semi-structured interviews were conducted with all of the KP groups and included a wide sample of civil society international and national non-government organizations, state actors and industry members otherwise not represented in previous empirical efforts on the subject. The data chapters achieve the primary aim to add to the understanding of the KP. Firstly, the civil societies engage in boycott rhetoric using ethos and negative pathos. As for state actors, the KP Chair exhibits charismatic leadership rhetoric, while ‘recognized' established states use logical reasoning, the ‘outlier' states evoke positive pathos. Lastly, the diamond industry experts appeal to negative emotions, the World Diamond Council to logos, and De Beers to positive emotional appeals. Combined, the rhetoric shows (a) how KP rhētors use different rhetorical strategies; (b) which in turn shape distinct discourses; (c) and contain dissimilar claims; (d) points to different motivations; (e) highlight different identities; (f) reveal key characteristics, and; (g) the nature of relationships within the KP. The organization rhetorical analysis also entails how the multiple KP leaders view the KP and KPCS and change. While the rhetoric helps demonstrate the constraints surrounding the KP and KPCS it also underlines the primary human rights and human security in which they all share. This thesis provides an extended critical view of the rhetoric by connecting Aristotelian pisteis with different conceptions of power outlined by French and Raven (1959) and Lukes (2005/1974). Combined, the rhetoric helps to explain the ways the KP attempts to achieve their specific political and economic goals while also building relationships with their stakeholders. Rhetoric is a worthwhile theory and methodological approach in order to explore organizations. The KP, and other international organizations provide an opportune arena for further rhetorical attention.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the European certificate of succession, and how it affects Swedish inheritance law. The European certificate of succession is a European document that will be introduced in august 2015 in the EU regulation of succession. The certificate of succession is meant to simplify the current process of cross-border inheritance by legitimizing the concerned parties, which according to the regulation are: heirs, legatees, executors of wills and administrators of the estate. According to the regulation, the member state of which the deceased had habitual residence shall have jurisdiction to rule on the succession as a whole. Since the certificate is a European document, it will have legal effect in all member states. Because of this, a decision from one authority/court in a member state will also be applicable in the other member states. This means that national law in a certain capacity becomes cross-border law, which requires strong regulation. The certificate itself cannot be counted as an estate inventory, choice of law, will, or similar. It can however be a basis for a decision concerning inheritance. The certificate can be considered as an acknowledgement of a decision from one member state, which will also be applicable in the other member states. In Sweden, the certificate will be issued by “Skatteverket” (the Swedish tax agency). The European certificate of succession will considerably simplify the cross-border inheritance process for EU-citizens.
Uppsatsens syfte är undersöka arvsintyget som rättshandling och diskutera dess följder på svensk arvsrätt. Det europeiska arvsintyget är en europeisk rättshandling som kommer införas i augusti 2015 i samband med EU:s nya arvsförordning. Arvsintyget är menat att förenkla processen vid gränsöverskridande arvsfrågor genom att legitimera de berörda parterna. Vilka enligt förordningen är: arvtagare, testamentstagare, boutredningsmän och testamentsexekutorer. I och med den nya arvsförordningen kommer hemvistprincipen få en större roll inom den europeiska arvsrätten och arvsintyget kan då användas för att förmedla ett domslut/bestämmande från en medlemsstat till en annan. Även universalitetsprincipen är av stor vikt vid behörighetsfrågor om gränsöverskridande arv, då den innebär att all kvarlåtenskap ska ingå i samma boutredning. Eftersom arvsintyget är en europeisk rättshandling kommer den ha rättsverkan i alla EU-länder som är bundna av arvsförordningen. Därför kommer ett beslut från myndighet/domstol i en medlemsstat även gälla i andra medlemsstater, vilket meddelas genom arvsintyget. Detta leder till att nationell lag i viss kapacitet blir gränsöverskridande, vilket kräver strikt reglering. Arvsintyget kan inte i sig självt räknas som en fördelning av kvarlåtenskap, lagvalsavtal eller liknande. Det kan dock ligga till grund för beslutande angående arvsskifte. Arvsintyget kan anses vara en kvittens av ett beslut från en medlemsstat, vilket ska gälla även i andra medlemsstater. Arvsintyget kommer i Sverige utfärdas av Skatteverket och kommer betydligt underlätta för EU-medborgare vid gränsöverskridande arvsfrågor.

A utilização adequada de um sistema de códigos é fundamental para a qualidade das informações de saúde registradas com o propósito de subsidiar o planejamento, a programação e a avaliação das ações de saúde. O objetivo do trabalho foi descrever o padrão de uso da Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde (CID) em atestados odontológicos apresentados em um serviço público federal com a finalidade de concessão de licença para tratamento de saúde. Analisou-se a concordância entre a codificação apresentada nos atestados e a codificação atribuída por cirurgiões-dentistas peritos oficiais; o grau de especificidade das codificações e a perspectiva de uso da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF). Este estudo concluiu que é necessário um aperfeiçoamento na utilização da Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde Décima Revisão (CID-10) e que o uso complementar da Classificação Internacional de Doenças em Odontologia e Estomatologia (CID-OE) e da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde (CIF) pode favorecer o processo de tomada de decisão quanto à necessidade de afastamento do trabalho, fornecendo dados relevantes para o monitoramento do absenteísmo por motivo odontológico.
Appropriate use of a code system is fundamental to the quality of registered health information in order to support the planning, programming and assessment of health measures. The objective of this study was to describe the pattern of use of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) in dental certificates presented in a federal public service for the purpose of granting permission for medical treatment. The degree of agreement between the coding presented in health certificates and the coding given by official dental experts was assessed, as the degree of specificity of coding and the prospect of using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).This study concluded that an improvement is needed in the use of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems - Tenth Revision (ICD-10) and that complementary use of the International Classification of Diseases in Dentistry and Stomatology (ICD-DA) and International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) can aid the decision-making process regarding the need to take time off work, providing relevant data for monitoring absenteeism for dental reasons.

This study offers an in-depth exploration of the conditions from which the implementation of a curriculum called the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), later localised into Swaziland General Certificate of Secondary Education (SGCSE), emerged and the constraining and enabling conditions for the implementation of the new I/SGCSE curriculum. It derives its theoretical foundation from Roy Bhaskar’s critical realism and Margaret Archer’s concept of analytical separability. The study therefore offers explanations about the curriculum change and its implementation that are based on how structural, cultural, and agential mechanisms operating at a deeper level of reality (the intransitive layer of reality or the domain of the real) and existing independently of what we see, know or believe of them (the transitive layer of reality or domains of the actual and empirical) interacted to condition the emergence of I/SGCSE and the way it is implemented. I conduct a critical discourse analysis of relevant literature, I/SGCSE documents and interview data in order to identify those mechanisms that were cultural and also those that were structural and agential. Bernstein’s concepts of classification and framing are used to analyse observation data in order to explore the influence of these mechanisms on the teaching practices of the teachers who took part in the study. Analysis of the data suggests that the change from General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O-level) to I/SGCSE was conditioned by inconsistencies between the cultural and structural mechanisms of the Swazi context. Many of the cultural elements of the Swazi context such as the discourses of good citizens, of competitive advantage, and of quality education draw from global discourses which view relations between people from a postmodernist position and therefore support weakly classified and framed pedagogic practices. In contrast, the discourse of morality and many of the structural elements of the Swazi context, such as the pre2006 education system and the Tinkhundla government system, all view reality from a modernist position, therefore supporting strong relations of power and control. The cultural system therefore exerted more influence in conditioning the change from the strongly classified and framed GCE O-level curriculum to the weakly classified and framed I/SGCSE curriculum. Furthermore, the analysis of interview and observation data suggests that inconsistencies between the global discourses and the discourses and structures that teachers confront in their day-to-day lives, together with the decisions teachers made in response to structural constraints, created constraining conditions for the change from GCE O-level to I/SGCSE. The study adds to knowledge on curriculum change and implementation through insights into the enabling and constraining effects of mechanisms operating at a deeper level of reality on curriculum-change decisions and on the ability of teachers to implement curriculum changes. The focus on the deeper level of reality may therefore contribute towards emancipatory knowledge which could be used not only by the Ministry of Education and Training and teachers in Swaziland but also elsewhere to inform future planning, decision making, and practice in relation to curriculum change and implementation.

The focus of this research was to compare the student membership population proportions, by race and gender, of Brevard County Public School students with the actual participation in select choice programs offered to Brevard County public high school students. This study was based on an analysis of the scores of 1,152 eighth-grade students who received a score of 4 or 5 on the 2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics and a score of 4 or 5 on the 2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) reading and their participation in high school advanced academic courses. The advanced academic choice programs selected for this study consisted of the four Florida articulated accelerated college credit seeking programs: Advanced Placement (AP), Dual-Enrollment (DE), International Baccalaureate&"174; (IB) Diploma Programme, and the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE). The proportion comparison consisted of student membership data and eighth-grade FCAT scores from 2007-2008 and the student membership data and high school course load data from the 2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011, and 2011-2012 academic school years. Chi-square goodness-of-fit tests were run to analyze the proportions by race and gender of the sample groups and student membership populations. For each respective year involved in this study, there was a statistically significant difference in the race and gender proportions of the samples and the student membership populations.

AbstractMaritime shipping is currently undergoing rapid digitalization, but with increasing exposure to cyber threats, there is a need to improve the security of the ship communication technology used during operations across international waters, as well as close to local shores and in ports. To this aid, there are ongoing standardization efforts for an international maritime Public Key Infrastructure, but the inherent properties of limited connectivity and bandwidth make certificate revocation a problematic affair compared to traditional Internet systems. The main contribution of this paper is an analysis of certificate revocation techniques based on how they fulfil fundamental maritime requirements and simulated usage over time. Our results identify CRLs (with Delta CRLs) and CRLite as the two most promising candidates. Finally, we outline the pros and cons with these two different solutions.

It is a complex sphere since there are several confusing initiatives intended to help companies incorporate sustainability. From an international perspective, the UN initiatives have had the most impact. I provide a short introduction to the history of key UN initiatives associated with environmental and social issues and how they relate to business and corporations. As the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have a key global framework for sustainable development, they will be discussed in detail with special attention to challenges and practical relevance for corporations. Well-known and widely applied initiatives to evaluate corporate performance like Fair Trade Certificate and ISO 14001; greenhouse and climate reporting initiatives, like the GHG Protocol, CDP, TCFD; sustainable reporting frameworks, like GRI and IIRC; and supply chain guidance and due diligence like the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and new laws on transparency, will be presented.

Every calibration laboratory creates calibration certificates that report technical and operational information about a device. Frequently, calibration certificates are issued in Portable Document Format (PDF) with little concern over whether recipients can electronically extract and use the calibration data at their facility. Sometimes data is saved as an image within the PDF forcing the use of optical character recognition or manual transcription to extract any information. These practices effectively lock the data and make it difficult to extract automatically. Without accessible data, tasks involving multiple certificates, such as control charting or interval analysis, become impossible. A universal Measurement Information Infrastructure (MII) includes a calibration certificate in a standardized, open format that allows easy access to the data for analysis, yet can be presented in a traditional, readable form. This paper explores some proof-of-concept ideas under investigation at the Primary Standards Laboratory for such an enhanced calibration certificate. An open specification based on mature technology will ease the transition from existing information systems to new MII standards. This paper describes how to embed Extensible Markup Language (XML) data into a PDF certificate, extract the information for reuse, store calibration certificates in XML format, and extend and customize the certificate to satisfy all requirements in ISO/IEC 17025:2017(E).

Although the procedure for obtaining an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Nuclear Certificate of Authorization has changed little since 1974, much of the process is not fully understood by designers and manufacturers of pressure equipment. It is the intent of this paper to make this process easier to understand and explain the key process steps in order to avoid unnecessary delays. The discussion will cover a number of topics including: “Contracting with an Authorized Inspection Agency,” “Deciding the Type of Certificate to Pursue. “Quality Assurance Program Preparation,” “Design Considerations,” “Preparing Welding and Non-Destructive Examination Documents,” “Training,” and “The Survey.” The requirements for obtaining one of the various ASME Certificates of Authorization are somewhat different for each. This paper focuses on an N-type Certificate and is intended to be a high level examination of the requirements and typical pitfalls in obtaining that certificate.

Abstract. In the process of vocational education improvement, “the integration of class, certificate, post and ability” teaching system reform and practice have been discussed, for the three software application courses of computer-aided design (CAD), building information modeling (BIM) and Glodon engineering quantity software (GQI). The analysis and positioning of “classes, certificates, posts, skills”, “classes and posts docking” to formulate teaching plans, “course certificate integration” setting teaching content, curriculum teaching method design, assessment and evaluation, the above five aspects were analyzed for the corresponding curriculum teaching reform and the study. Practice has proved that the effect has been good: the numbers of students applying for the vocational skill level certificate and the application rate both have increased, and the passing rate has grown up significantly, which has risen from 78% to 98%.

The Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) in Hong Kong has developed a system for calibration of quarter-inch working standard (WS3) microphones which automates the measurement process and generates digital calibration certificates (DCC) to meet the growing demand for microphone calibration services in Hong Kong. This paper describes (i) the method of determining the pressure sensitivity of a microphone combination unit from 20 Hz to 20 kHz by the comparison technique in accordance with the International Standard IEC 61094-5, (ii) the measurement model and uncertainty evaluation, and (iii) the automatic system which facilitates the calibration process and generation of a digital calibration certificate.

This brief examines the role of incentives in encouraging companies in Thailand to adopt workplace policies and programs that address AIDS-related stigma and discrimination and respond to the needs of workers for information and services. The research was a collaboration between the Horizons Program, American International Assurance (AIA), the Thailand Business Coalition on AIDS (TBCA), and AusAID. After the initiative was launched (known as the AIDS-response Standard Organization), TBCA staff built relationships with company managers to explain and promote the advantages of joining. Companies agreeing to implement at least three HIV/AIDS workplace policies would receive a reduction of 5–10 percent off group life insurance premiums from AIA, Thailand’s largest insurance provider, if they were AIA clients. As the initiative evolved, TBCA introduced the additional incentive of a certificate endorsed by the government and awarded at a high-profile public ceremony. For each company agreeing to participate, TBCA offered assistance to enhance their activities, including providing educational leaflets, videos, and a mobile exhibition, as well as condoms, peer education training, counseling and referrals to support groups for HIV-positive employees, and assistance with writing company HIV/AIDS policies.
