This study investigates how leadership intellectual stimulation relates to team positive affect and team learning. We explore the role of positive affect as mediator between leadership intellectual stimulation and team learning. Using a cross-sectional sample of 562 employees, nested within 130 teams from 44 small and medium size organizations, we implemented Structural Equation Model analysis at the team level. Results provides evidence of the strong influence that intellectual stimulation have on team learning and team positive affect, as well as the potential of positive affect for stimulate team learning. Team positive affect serves as partial mediator between intellectual stimulation and team learning, contributing to explain significant additional variance. Leadership intellectual stimulation is a relevant team social resource that provides support for team learning. As well, positive affect contributes significantly to improve learning among teams. This suggests the importance of developing leadership behaviors that encourage learning and team positive affect, which contributes to team learning and hence to performance.

The paper considers the various aspects of application of intellectual capital management methods in team building issues. The authors justifi ed the principal possibility of allocating sub-category «intellectual capital of a small group (team)», and the range of its application in the management teams formation are described including the issues of: determining the team’s strengths and weaknesses, evaluating the team performance, revealing the personal contribution of each member to the team work and the issues of relationship within the team. The methodological characteristics of intellectual capital management team are elaborated and a model of the team’s intellectual capital composition and structure is proposed. The properties of team’s intellectual capital components are described. Techniques and process of the small group’s intellectual capital management are developed, covering the stages of its analysis, evaluation and decision-making. Based on the study results the authors proposed the resource-based model of a small group activity, which can be used as an analytical tool for decision-making related to the management of the team’s intellectual capital.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to deepen resource-based view theory by analyzing how intellectual capital (IC) affects performance in temporary teams and by showing the moderating role of integrative mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach The research context focuses on 153 national teams of football (NTF), also referred to as national soccer teams, as an example of temporary groups. A partial least squares (PLS) methodology was utilized on a data set built from transfermarkt.com and FIFA world rankings. Three main hypotheses were developed and tested using first a PLS and then an OLS approach. Findings The results show how IC contributes to performance, extending the findings of previous studies to the context of temporary teams. Additionally, the results show how some integrative mechanisms such as assembly decisions and team leader experience influence temporary team performance by creating an interaction effect with existing IC. Originality/value This study contributes to IC theories for three reasons. First, it applies IC research to a specific research context: temporary teams, where specific organizational capabilities are required to coordinate resources. Second, the study analyzes the role of integrative mechanisms as moderators of the relationship between IC and performance in temporary teams. Third, the study focuses on NTF as an example of temporary teams.

Emotion dysregulation (ED) underlies psychiatric symptoms and impedes adaptive responses in autistic individuals. The Emotion Awareness and Skills Enhancement (EASE) program was the first mindfulness-based intervention designed to target emotion dysregulation in autistic adolescents (12–17 years old). This project partnered with stakeholders to adapt EASE for autistic adolescents and adults with co-occurring intellectual disability and autistic elementary-aged children, groups who often benefit from caregiver support in treatment. Over three adaptation phases, we: (1) elicited stakeholder and expert feedback to adapt the original EASE program for autistic individuals with intellectual disability; (2) redesigned the adapted manual and expanded the target age range following a small “micro-trial” with a sample of autistic adolescents and adults with intellectual disability ( n = 6); and (3) demonstrated feasibility and acceptability of a caregiver-client team-based approach (EASE-Teams) in a sample of 10 autistic individuals with and without intellectual disability (ages 7–25) and their caregivers. EASE-Teams was both acceptable and helpful to families. Significant improvements were noted in participant emotion dysregulation, psychiatric symptoms, and caregiver stress from their child’s dysregulation. Findings suggest that EASE-Teams may be appropriate for heterogeneous developmental and cognitive needs. Future research to establish efficacy and refine EASE-Teams with community providers is warranted. Lay abstract Emotion dysregulation (ED) impacts mental health symptoms and well-being in autistic individuals. In prior work, we developed the Emotion Awareness and Skills Enhancement (EASE) to improve emotion dysregulation with autistic adolescents (aged 12–17). The study team partnered with autistic individuals, their caregivers, and expert clinicians to adapt EASE for autistic adolescents and adults with co-occurring intellectual disability and autistic elementary-aged children, groups that often benefit from caregiver support in treatment. In three phases, we (1) gathered caregiver and expert feedback to adapt the original EASE program for autistic adults with intellectual disability, (2) revised the treatment after using it with six autistic adults with intellectual disability, and (3) tested the newly developed caregiver–client team-based treatment, called EASE-Teams, in a small group of 10 autistic individuals with and without intellectual disability (aged 7–25). Families found EASE-Teams to be acceptable and helpful. We found improvements in emotion dysregulation and mental health symptoms for autistic participants. Caregivers reported less stress from their child’s dysregulation after participating. These results show that EASE-Teams can be appropriate for different developmental and cognitive needs. Future studies will need to test the benefits of the treatment in community clinics.

The funding of a research project working with local governments and people with intellectual disabilities led to the establishment of an inclusive research team within a university faculty. The core team consisted of four people, including a design researcher, an architect, a disability advocate and a community researcher/self-advocate. Though there are ample attention and resources devoted to the front-facing parts of a university being visibly inclusive—mostly from a physical access perspective or focussed on the student experience—less attention has been directed to what it means to develop and support inclusive research and aligned work opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities within a university campus. For this reason, the paper explores what it was like for our team that included non-traditional academics and people with intellectual disabilities to work at a university in a design school (not a disability-related research centre). We employ a process of collaborative autoethnography to reflect on how different team members took the lead across different parts of the study. We conclude with a set of tips for the development of more inclusive research teams within university settings.

Purpose – There is a general consensus that healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities should be provided by multi-disciplinary teams. Within a forensic setting, recommendations are often made for separate or “parallel” forensic teams, operating independently of generic mental health or intellectual disability teams. An alternative to this model is an “integrated” service, where specialist forensic clinicians work within the general intellectual disability service, to provide support for clients with forensic needs. For clients with intellectual disabilities and forensic needs, there may be advantages to providing access to a wider multi-disciplinary team, through the application of an integrated model. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the working of an integrated forensic service within a learning disability team, to identify positive aspects of this model, and how potential shortcomings may be overcome. Design/methodology/approach – Literature review, description of service outline with case example. Findings – Although some studies have compared parallel and integrated forensic models within mental health services, there are no evaluations that compare models of forensic services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, specific advantages of an integrated model may include availability of multi-disciplinary clinicians, development of forensic skills across wider groups of clinicians, reduction in stigma and avoidance of delay in transfer of care between services. In addition, in areas with smaller populations, parallel services may not be feasible due to low case numbers. Originality/value – There has been no formal evaluation of parallel vs integrated forensic services within an intellectual disability setting. However, the authors describe a fully integrated service and suggest means by which the potential shortcomings of an integrated model may be overcome.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the characteristics of adults with intellectual disabilities supported by a Community Forensic Learning Disability Team (CFT) and interventions delivered. It discusses the clinical implications of these and examines outcomes such as recidivism. Design/methodology/approach A retrospective case note review of all 70 service users open to the CFT during June 2013 was carried out, using a structured service evaluation tool. Findings The majority of service users (74.3 per cent) had a mild intellectual disability. Multiple mental health and/or physical health diagnoses were common, and 28 per cent had problematic drug or alcohol abuse. Almost half of service users had been victims of physical or sexual abuse, or neglect. Sexual offences were the most common index offence, followed by assault and fire-setting. A wide range of multi-disciplinary interventions were delivered within the Community Forensic Team. Following CFT involvement there was an increase in service users living in supported living in the community and a decrease in people in secure or out of area placements. Over half of service users engaged in no further offending behaviour since their referral, and those who did offend generally showed a decrease in the severity of offending behaviours. There was a large decrease in the number of convictions received. Practical implications The study shows the benefits of a multi-disciplinary Community Forensic Team for offenders with intellectual disabilities in terms of reduced recidivism and range of interventions delivered. It highlights the importance of clinicians within such a team having the skills to work with people with co-morbid diagnoses (e.g. autism) and people with trauma backgrounds and problematic substance use. Originality/value This paper demonstrates the complexity of the service users who are supported by the CFT, as well as the integral role played in supporting individuals to move to less restrictive settings, with positive outcomes.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe outcomes from a trial of the Danish Intellectual Capital Statement (ICS) within the Australian public sector. Design/methodology/approach – Two work teams within the Department of Primary Industries, Farm Services Victoria (FSV) participated in the trial over a six-month period. Data were collected and triangulated from structured focus groups, researcher guided workshops and individual project record journals kept by participants and observers. Findings – This trial has tested and confirmed existing European Intellectual Capital Management (ICM) theory in a new context, confirmed the strategic management and communication utility of the Danish ICS. It also revealed the utility of this method: to assist the organisation articulate its knowledge-related needs; in developing knowledge management (KM) strategy, in planning and reviewing KM initiatives, in developing clarity and shared context and in navigating change. Research limitations/implications – This research focuses on a single in-depth case study and concurrent organisational restructuring impacted on team focus. Practical implications – The strategic management and communication utility of the Danish ICS was confirmed. The paper demonstrates new insights for practitioners using this ICM method as a useful tool to assist an organisation to articulate KM needs. Originality/value – The primary research gap in the ICM field is examination of the practical application of methods in a real-life context (particularly outside Europe). This work has tested and confirmed existing theory in a new and different context – the Australian public sector.

The impetus for this work has evolved from the development of Intellectual Capital (IC) within the Defence Fixed Network (DFN) Integrated Project Team (IPT). Using case study methodology it focuses on an examination of a sample group of DFN desk officers who perform the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) function. The metrics contributing to the DFN IC Model are then contrasted with the results of a benchmark IC study conducted on BT Global services. The purpose of the benchmarking exercise is to determine areas for improvement within the DFN IC Model. The study moves on to describe the commercial and operational context of the DFN IPT and its contracted delivery partner, British Telecom. The relationship between BT and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is explained and the government's current Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) are discussed. A top level strategic analysis of the DFT IPT, including its immediate operating environment is provided using PEST and SWOT analysis techniques. The study considers the theoretical basis of the literature review and seeks to develop an appropriate IC Model, whilst reviewing its main components. The application of the IC Model to the DFN IPT and BT Global services contexts is also examined. The case study was conducted in two phases. The first phase consisted of the application of the DFN IC Model across a sample of twenty members of the DFN IPT, in order to establish the IC index rating of the organisation. The indices are further developed by the introduction of qualitative data from the subsequent discourse with each of the respondents in support of each of the formal questions. The second phase of the research Model comprised the application of the DFN IC Model to a similar cross section of twenty members of BT Global services, in order to provide a benchmark against which the DFN profile can be further assessed.

The automotive industry with its highly competitive environment together with high research and development costs is struggling to increase shareholder return. Cross-functional teams are employed to source suppliers which are helping to reduce production and development costs in close cooperation with the other departments. When working in a competitive environment and with external actors, intellectual property becomes increasingly important and organizational effort is directed to increase the generation and usage of such. Patent portfolio analysis is a well-known tool used to extract information from surrounding actors’ patents, which traditionally mainly was used for product development, but has potential to increase gross profit through cross-functional sourcing teams as well.  The purpose of this study is to investigate how to implement and use patent portfolio analysis as a cross-functional tool in the automotive industry. In order to fulfill the purpose, a qualitative case study has been conducted including both qualitative interviews, as well as action research in the form of workshops at the case company. The results were analyzed using a tailored framework denominated the system integration model which is a combination of the technology acceptance model and the managing strategy framework. The systems integration model was developed and validated by the researchers during the research process. The research result shows that patent portfolio analysis has a high perceived usefulness but a low actual system use within the studied company, especially in the sourcing department. The main barrier to use patent portfolio analysis cross-functionally was that the intellectual property strategy was not yet fully communicated and linked to the different departments’ objectives. There were also barriers found in the communication between- and the understanding of- each other’s departments, which could be reduced by increased education and promoting clear contact points and guidelines. The final conclusion of this research was that patent portfolio analysis likely could be used cross functionally to map the competitive landscape and increase gross profit by protection innovations through product development and sourcing.
Fordonssektorn kännetecknas av höga utvecklingskostnader och en konkurrenskraftig marknad där aktörerna strävar mot vinst till aktieägare. För att ge en hög avkastning till aktieägarna så arbetar man i tvärfunktionella team för att minska produktion och utvecklingskostnader samt för att anlita de bästa leverantörerna. Att arbeta i en konkurrenskraftig miljö med externa aktörer gör att immateriella rättigheter blir allt viktigare och företag satsar därför stora resurser för att detta ska hanteras på rätt sätt. Patentportföljanalys är ett välkänt verktyg för att extrahera information från omgivande aktörers patent, vilket traditionellt främst har använts i produktutveckling, men även har potential att öka bruttoresultat genom ett effektivare samarbete över avdelningar i tvärfunktionella inköpsteam. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur man implementerar och använder patentportföljanalys som ett tvärfunktionellt verktyg inom fordonssektorn. För att uppfylla syftet har en kvalitativ fallstudie genomförts genom kvalitativa intervjuer och workshops vid det undersökta företaget. Resultatet analyserades med hjälp av ett skräddarsytt ramverk som forskarna för denna undersökning benämnt som ”the system integration model”. Det här ramverket sammansvetsar den välkända modellen ”technology acceptance model” som syftar till att undersöka acceptans av ny teknik och den välkända modellen ”Managing four processes” som handlar om hur man skapar ett strategiskt management verktyg. ”The system integration model” utvecklades och validerades av forskarna i flera steg under studien. Resultatet visar att patentportföljanalys har en hög uppfattad nytta trots att det är låg systemanvändning i det undersökta företaget i dagsläget, särskilt i inköpsavdelningen. Den största barriären för användandet av patentportföljanalysen verkar vara att företagsstrategin för immateriella rättigheter ännu inte har kommunicerats och kopplats till de olika avdelningarna fullt ut. Det noterades även barriärer i kommunikationen mellan- och förståelsen för- de olika avdelningarna, vilken kan minskas genom utbildning och tydliga kontaktpunkter och riktlinjer. Den här undersökningen indikerar ytterligare på att patentportföljanalys är användbart i tvärfunktionella team då det ger möjligheten att kartlägga konkurrenslandskapet, säkra produkt- och eftermarknadsexklusivitet och förbättra leverantörsavtal, vilket i sin tur kan öka bruttovinsten.

O objetivo do estudo é refletir sobre a história de um dispositivo de Educação Permanente construído no Programa Acompanhante da Saúde da Pessoa com Deficiência (APD) denominado Roda de Saberes. O Programa APD foi criado pela Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de São Paulo (SMS) em 2010com vinte equipes multiprofissionais distribuídas pelo município, através de parceria exclusiva, até 2014, com a Associação Saúde da Família, uma Organização Social, ou seja, instituição identificada a propósitos sociais. O objetivo do Programa é estimular a autonomia, aprimorar cuidados e fortalecer vínculos familiares de pessoas com deficiência intelectual. Ao ser contratado para supervisionar oito equipes do programa, este pesquisador buscou basear suas intervenções em formas democráticas de gestão em saúde, para promovê-las e facilitar o trabalho em equipe interdisciplinar. A Roda de Saberes nasce deste esforço inspirada pelas experiências francesas de clubes da Clínica de La Borde e Saint-Alban, pelos princípios do Apoio Paideia de Gastão Wagner Campos e pela Educação Permanente, que é a aprendizagem significativa através do trabalho, onde, nas organizações, o aprender e o ensinar se incorporam ao cotidiano da gestão. Neste sentido, pretendeu-se com esta dissertação pesquisar e refletir sobre as bases teóricas e a história da Roda de Saberes (entre 2010 e 2014) e assim favorecer outros processos de Educação Permanente. Para tanto se desenvolveu um Estudo de Caso cujo objetivo foi analisar a idealização e o desenvolvimento da proposta da Roda de Saberes através de diferentes abordagens: 1- Levantamento Bibliográfico; 2- Levantamento e análise de documentos e registros; 3- Identificação dos princípios facilitadores para a construção da Roda dos Saberes. Concluiu-se a necessidade de ações em Educação Permanente em Saúde tendo como base a eficácia das ações desenvolvidas na Roda de Saberes, observadas através da qualidade e intensidade da participação dos profissionais nos encontros e na mudança do perfil do trabalho cotidiano das equipes de saúde. Considera-se ainda que o método e o objetivo da ação devem estar eticamente alinhados. Como produto dessa análise propõe-se um folder que visa instigar àqueles interessados em Educação Permanente em Saúde, a refletir sobre os processos facilitadores dessa ação em serviço, em cinco aspectos ou fatores estratégicos, fruto da pesquisa: território, público alvo, trabalhadores, instituição e apoiador.
The objective is to reflect on the story of a Permanent Education device built in the Health Companion for People with Disability Program (APD), called Knowledge Wheel. The APD program was created by the City Department of Health of São Paulo (SMS) in 2010, with twenty multidisciplinary teams distributed by the county, through exclusive partnership, until 2014, with the Family Health Association, a Social Organization, meaning an institution identified with social purposes. The goal of the Program is to stimulate autonomy, improve care and strengthen family ties of people with intellectual disabilities. Permanent Education is learning, significantly, through work, where learning and teaching are incorporated into the daily life of organizations. This researcher was hired to oversee eight teams of the Program, and as so, sought to base his interventions in democratic management to promote them and facilitate interdisciplinary teamwork. The Knowledge Wheel was born of this effort inspired by French experiences of clubs from the Clinic of La Borde and Saint-Alban, the principles of the Paideia Support of Gastão Wagner Campos and the Permanent Education that is the meaningful learning through work, where learning and teaching are incorporated into the daily management of organizations. In this sense, with this dissertation, it was intended research and reflect on the theoretical foundations and on the history of Knowledge Wheel and thus encourages other processes of Permanent Education. For that was developed a case study which purpose was to analyze the ideation and development of the proposal of the Knowledge Wheel through different approaches: 1. Bibliographical Survey; 2 Survey and analysis of documents and records; 3- Identification of facilitators principles for its construction.The conclusion is the need for actions in Permanent Health Education based on the effectiveness of the actions developed in the Knowledge Wheel, observed through the quality and intensity of the participation of professionals in the meetings and changing the daily work of the profile of health teams. It is also considered that the method and the purpose of the action must be ethically aligned. In current business affairs, most executive professions require one or several kinds of data consultation in their practice. Nowadays, the majority of data either is or has been digitalized and digital data is defined as information represented in a discrete and discontinuous manner. For accessibility purposes, data are often stored in databases that organize information via design and modeling techniques to facilitate querying. Data retrieval is crucial and if this process lacks efficacy, users either are presented incomplete information or are forced to perform repetitive queries. Intellectual property (IP) lawyers in Brazil are among that group and must regularly access a private database for trademark information. While it contains all the data they require, the database’s querying mechanisms are not tailored for IP law practice. The existing filters and lack of replacement algorithms often yield incomplete results, increasing time and resources dispended. With millions of dollars in potential lawsuits and work-hours, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether an IP-focused querying system could help mitigate this resource waste, facilitating the trademark comparison work of IP lawyers. For this, a new orthographic and phonetically focused querying logic was implemented. ANOVA tests and a questionnaire were used to compare the existing querying mechanism with the new one in terms of time, work satisfaction and querying accuracy. Results indicate the new querying system significantly decreased the amount of searches needed to execute a complete trademark analysis, while lawyers averaged the same amount of time to complete their work. Lawyers also reported higher work satisfaction levels and perceived increase in work efficiency.

Background: Individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) are experiencing longer life expectancies with the majority requiring the ongoing support of family caregivers into adulthood. Medicaid is the primary funding source for supports and services for adults with IDD. Growing Medicaid expenditures and goals to improve quality of care are driving more states to move their Medicaid fee-for-service programs into a managed care model. The stated goals of Medicaid managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) are to improve care coordination and access to care while controlling costs, but the evidence regarding these outcomes is limited and mixed. Given the level of uncertainty about MLTSS for adults with IDD and their family caregivers, best practices recommendations have been produced by the federal government and advocacy agencies to help guide future MLTSS implementation efforts. These best practice recommendations combined with the continued expansion of MLTSS in the states, provided an opportunity to further explore implementation of MLTSS to inform both policy and practice. One state which recently reformed their Medicaid program to MLTSS and which has been referred to as a bellwether state is Kansas. The MLTSS program in Kansas, titled “KanCare”, is the first for adults with IDD to integrate across health, behavioral health, and LTSS while also contracting through three private-for-profit managed care organizations (MCOs). Aims: The objective of this study was to describe the current implementation of MLTSS for adults with IDD and their family caregivers in one state, Kansas. Study aims were as follows: 1) To understand the rationale behind and what actually happened with MLTSS implementation for adults with IDD in Kansas; 2) To understand how service coordination providers and family caregivers perceived care coordination and access to services for adults with IDD in MLTSS; 3) To understand how family caregivers and their roles were recognized in MLTSS for adults with IDD. Methods: A single case embedded design case study approach was used with in-depth semi-structured interviews completed with state/regional level representatives (N=13), MLTSS service coordination providers (N=7), and family caregivers of adults with IDD (N=11). Data collection and analysis were guided by the unified theory of family quality of life (FQOL) and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model. The framework method was used to structure the data analysis process. Member checking was completed to ensure accuracy of results. Findings: Regarding aim one, respondents identified reducing costs and improving care quality as the rationale behind MLTSS, but these were outcomes not yet realized given the early stages of implementation. At the time of this study, the Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) were continuing to work on expanding provider networks and to provide additional services to address health disparities amongst individuals with IDD. Study participants identified the importance of adequate planning and stakeholder engagement to reduce confusion and fear when transitioning into MLTSS. Addressing aim two, timely and accessible consumer education, clear care coordination processes, and provider network adequacy were identified as important to influence the challenges experienced to date in care coordination and access to services. Regarding aim three, participants acknowledged the important role of family caregivers. At the current stage of the KanCare implementation, participants reported lack of formal processes for family caregiver assessment and a need for more proactive family support services planning. Conclusion: Lessons learned from this implementation experience include the importance of having long planning timelines and including stakeholder feedback into the design of MLTSS programs. Care coordination holds promise to better integrate care, but more research is needed to understand best practices for the provision of care coordination in MLTSS. In order to address access to services, MLTSS programs will need to work and build provider capacity and provider networks. MLTSS programs will also need to formally recognize the role of family caregivers by incorporating the use of family caregiver assessments to proactively plan for support needs.

A great deal is known and has been written about the difficulties that high IQ children can experience in the classroom when their special educational needs are not met. Evidence suggests that these difficulties can result in poor academic performance. This study is different from the research carried out in this field so far in that it expresses an hitherto unheard adult voice. It does so by examining the causes and the long-term effects of academic underachievement, as perceived by high IQ adults, on reflection. A mixed quantitative/qualitative methodological approach was used. 158 members of British Mensa, the High IQ Society, completed one semi-structured open ended questionnaire about their perceptions of the causes and long-term effects of their academic underachievement. A second questionnaire was completed by 50 of the previous sample who had revealed that they had reversed their underachievement in adulthood. This highlighted the differences between their educational experiences as children and as adults. It also revealed the impact that their delayed academic achievement had had on their life trajectory. Out of those 50 participants, ten took part in semi-structured one-to-one interviews which allowed for more in-depth enquiry. The conclusions of the study were that, if not nurtured, an innate ability such as a high IQ can become a disadvantage over time. It suggests that not catering for the special educational needs of high IQ children by not providing the mental stimulation they need is 'intellectual neglect'. Such neglect, like physical and emotional neglect, may affect mental well-being in adulthood. In the study sample, most of the participants' long-term economic and mental health had been negatively affected by their academic underachievement, even when it had been reversed in adulthood. This is an area which seems to have been little researched so far, perhaps because of the difficulty of locating high IQ underachieving adults. Yet, the issues highlighted by the research are of great importance not only to the individuals concerned but also to society. The desired outcomes of this study are that the dissemination of the results will raise awareness amongst educators and policy makers of the potential negative long-term effects of neglecting high IQ children's intellectual needs. It will also provide a platform for further research.

This dissertation explores the development of the concept of synderesis between 1150 and 1450. In medieval moral psychology, synderesis referred to the innate capacity of the mind to know the first principles of natural law, or, alternatively, the will to follow these principles. But it was also interpreted as a mystical power of the soul, capable of uniting it to God. synderesis also appears in Late Medieval vernacular literature, as a character in moralising texts. By approaching synderesis from the point of view of conceptual history I synthesise these fields and explore how synderesis operated beyond the formal treatises of scholastic theology. Chapter two explores how synderesis developed in medieval scholasticism from Peter Lombard up to Thomas Aquinas. Chapters three and four explore how the mystical interpretation of synderesis first proposed by Thomas Gallus of Vercelli was incorporated into the mystical treatise Itinerarium mentis in Deum by Bonaventure of Balneoregio. Here, I analyse when, where and how Bonaventure integrated this mystical interpretation into his pre-existing moral-psychological interpretation of it and how his use of synderesis relates to the historical context in which the Itinerarium was written. I argue that synderesis should be seen as existing on a continuum of interpretations between moral psychology and mysticism. After Bonaventure and Aquinas, the concept undergoes a period of stagnation in academia, which is the subject of Chapter five. However, synderesis also appears in a number of non-academic texts in which the moral-psychological and mystical interpretations of the term coexist. Chapter six explores how Late Medieval vernacular authors drew on previous scholastic discussions of the concept. I focus here in particular on Guillaume de Deguileville's Le pèlerinage de l'âme, where synderesis appears not as the moral guide of the soul, but as the accuser of the soul before the court of heaven.

The report describes the system developed by the HyBert team for the taxonomy enrichment task at Dialog Evaluation 2020 [12]. In this work we investigate the ability of large pre-trained language models to discover hyponym-hypernym relations. We probed state-of-the-art Transformers on the hypernymy task to evaluate implicit hierarchical knowledge captured during self-supervised training. To do so we use a simple distance-based classifier on the representations produced by the Transformer. Furthermore, we examine the performance of supervised approaches with a wide range of different training and embedding strategies. We show that while being a high capacity model, the Transformer is surprisingly hard to train to resolve hypernymy.

This paper provides results of participation in the Russian Relation Extraction for Business shared task (RuREBus) within DialogueEvaluation 2020. Our team took the first place among 5 other teams in Relation Extraction with Named Entities task. The experiments showed that the best model is based on R-BERT model. R-BERT achieved significant result in comparison with models based on Convolutional or Recurrent Neural Networks on the SemEval-2010 task 8 relational dataset. In order to adapt this model to RuREBus task we also added some modifications like negative sampling. In addition, we have tested other models for Relation Extraction and Named Entity Recognition tasks.

Improvement in labor productivity is a common problem in each country. In particular, in Japan where the productive age population is decreasing, it is necessary to steadily advance efforts for the improvement at various sites throughout the entire society. In doing so, in order to make it prevail over broad areas, it is necessary to consider that on-site holding resources can be utilized, that it can be easily introduced, and that it will surely be effective. Therefore, we have focused on improving the way of collaboration from an angle of “person’s personality”. Specifically, we have aimed to build a methodology, for a “team” that is a collaborative form widely introduced and utilized at companies and educational sites, which enhances the effectiveness of team activities. As for the overall structure of the methodology, we have designed it with a three-layer structure in order to clarify separation from other intellectual properties and consideration to ethical aspects. That is, the designed methodology comprises the following three phases. Phase I: a team formation methodology; Phase II: a team management methodology; and Phase III: a team development support methodology. Study results of Phase I were presented at the 26th Design Engineering and System Division Lecture by the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME). In this study, we have used the methodology of Phase I to devise, as a method included in Phase II, three Rules for creating a team environment that makes it easy for “introverted” persons in Jungian psychology to express their opinions. Then, we have conducted parallel group randomized trials comparing an intervention group with a control group, analyzed the results by an analysis method such as Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and verified the effectiveness of the devised method. As a result, the findings have revealed that teams in which the team management was carried out according to the devised method tends to be more effective and prone to excellent effectiveness.

In 2005, the Industry Advisory Council (IAC) of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado-Boulder (CU) began a discussion about the subject of outsourcing engineering offshore and the possibility of teaching a course to prepare mechanical engineering students for this environment. This in turn, led to the formation of a committee and a series of discussions and recommendations for the content for such a course. The ad-hoc committee comprised of a few IAC members, a few M.E. department design faculty members, and some faculty from the business school. The original course covered the following topics: engineering economics, creating product requirements and specifications, identifying the core competencies of a company, project management, developing a business plan, supply chain logistics/management, intellectual property, understanding cultural and language differences, team dynamics, communication, and creativity. This broad array of subject matter dictated that the course be taught in a non-conventional manner. A team of instructors, comprised of two mechanical engineering professors, two business school professors, three engineers and two businessmen from industry, who are intimately involved with outsourcing, and a patent attorney were assembled to teach different portions of the course. The students also participated in a hands-on outsourcing term project. The class was broken up into ten teams, with each team developing a product in conjunction with a company from India. Each team submitted a set of specifications for a unique product to the offshore company. The company designed the product and produced an approved CAD drawing. After student approval, the company manufactured a prototype of the product, and shipped it to the respective team for analysis. Each team then presented a report on their outsourcing experience, their testing results, and a financial analysis for the product. The class was comprised of mechanical engineering senior and graduate students, with a few students from other engineering disciplines and the business school. Based upon course surveys, this course was very well received by the students and provided an important introduction to business. The semester project proved to be a valuable tool for the students to obtain some direct experience with outsourcing.

This paper describes the integration of a significant amount of instruction and technical communications assignments into an early design course in the BSME program at the University of Houston. While many of the examples presented in this paper were initially introduced into the course without outside involvement, many more have been developed and the initial assignments have been improved through collaborations with the recently established University of Houston Writing Center (2000) and the even newer (2004) Technical Communications Across the Curriculum Program in the Cullen College of Engineering. Approximately 55% of an individual’s course grade is based on a variety of team (18%) and individual (37%) writing and presentation assignments. In many ways, these assignments are similar to those given in a traditional technical communications course. The difference is that many of these assignments are directly linked to course material including, the design process, working in teams on design-fabricate-and-compete projects, engineering ethics, and intellectual property issues. The paper provides details of these activities (including examples of assignments) and the results from student surveys requesting feedback on their effectiveness.

The experience gathered in the course of many IT projects ranging from the simplest to the very complex, shows that the key adverse factors affecting the productivity of project teams are: the stress that accompanies designers in the development and implementation of IT projects, poor use of the intellectual capacities of individual project team members, excessive focus on design support tools at the expense of project quality, excessive adherence to a specific method of IT project management, the pressures of time and budget restraints on projects where labor intensity has been underestimated. According to many IT project managers, the treating of people as “spare parts” often jeopardizes project outcome. Managers commonly forget the simple fact that the intellect and personalities of every employee are different and that often neglected in accomplishing project goals by not helping individual staff members to achieve personal satisfaction. My practice shows that the choice of a design method has little effect on design productivity and often reduces it where the system needs continuous customization to ever new client requirements and restrict the operating freedom on individual projects contributing to less innovative outcomes.

The 5 year “Controlled Hydrogen Fleet and Infrastructure Demonstration and Validation Project” (or Fuel Cell Vehicle Learning Demonstration) was initiated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in 2004. The purpose of the project is to conduct an integrated field validation that simultaneously examines the performance of fuel cell vehicles and the supporting hydrogen infrastructure. Four industry teams are currently operating more than 92 vehicles and 14 refueling stations throughout the United States. More than 40 additional vehicles and several additional refueling stations will be added to the project through 2009. At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), on-road driving and refueling data are analyzed to assess the technology status and progress, as well as to provide feedback to the hydrogen research and development community. A new/updated set of public results, in the form of composite data products (constructed to protect the intellectual property of the four teams), is released twice a year in the spring and fall. In addition to the public results, detailed analyses results are shared with each participating team. One of the analyses studies fuel cell degradation. The study includes following the fuel cell performance degradation trends, e.g. identifying fuel cell stacks that are decaying at a different rate than others of a similar design and in the same fleet, and explores connections between the real world data and fuel cell degradation. This study differs from other degradation studies in a lab setting or at the single cell level because this study uses full scale fuel cell stacks in vehicles with on-road driving and refueling. In the study, researchers investigate degradation factors by applying multivariate analyses for each individual team and for the combination of all four teams. Detailed results are reviewed with the individual teams in an effort to improve each analysis iteration and comprehension of the results. This paper will detail NREL’s study of fuel cell degradation factors by describing the process, reviewing the latest public results, and reporting on any observed dominant factor groups affecting fuel cell degradation.

Critical thinking currently represents the necessary ability of an individual to orient himself in a world full of information, it allows him to search for his own identity, to form his own opinions, attitudes. Critical thinking is an individual intellectual process in which the thinker improves and cultivates the quality of his thinking, activating himself in the assessment of actions, various situations. The paper will present current theoretical approaches to understanding critical thinking and its position, we will also introduce critical thinking as one of the necessary human competencies acquired in the educational process. The paper will present the results of research by a team of experts at Constantine the Philosopher University Nitra, focused on the development of critical thinking in the educational process, which is part of the undergraduate training of future teachers and its subsequent implementation in educational practice.

The article focuses on the «Intellectual Dark Web», an informal group of scholars, publicists, and activists who openly opposed the identity politics, political correctness, and the dominance of leftist ideas in American intellectual life. The author examines the reasons for the emergence of this group, names the main representatives and finds that the existence of «dark intellectuals» is the evidence of important problems in US public discourse. The term «Intellectual Dark Web» was coined by businessman Eric Weinstein to describe those who openly opposed restrictions on freedom of speech by the state or certain groups on the grounds of avoiding discrimination and hate speech. Extensive discussion of the phenomenon of «dark intellectuals» began after the publication of Barry Weiss’s article «Meet the renegades from the «Intellectual Dark Web» in The New York Times in 2018. The author writes of «dark intellectuals» as an informal group of «rebellious thinkers, academic apostates, and media personalities» who felt isolated from traditional channels of communication and therefore built their own alternative platforms to discuss awkward topics that were often taboo in the mainstream media. One of the most prominent members of this group, Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, publicly opposed the C-16 Act in September 2016, which the Canadian government aimed to implement initiatives that would prevent discrimination against transgender people. Peterson called it a direct interference with the right to freedom of speech and the introduction of state censorship. Other members of the group had a similar experience that their views were not accepted in the scientific or media sphere. The existence of the «Intellectual Dark Web» indicates the problem of political polarization and the reduction of the ability to find a compromise in the American intellectual sphere and in American society as a whole.

Review question / Objective: The aim of our systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the effects of IL-4 and IL-10 gene polymorphism and clarify their possible association with PTB. Condition being studied: World Health Organization (WHO) defines preterm birth (PTB) as babies born alive before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed. The new estimates show that the prevalence of PTB during 2014 ranged from 8.7% to13.4% of all live births, about 15 million preterm babies born each year. Besides, PTB is the leading cause of death worldwide for children below 5 years of age. Babies born preterm are at an increased risk of short-term and long-term complications attributed to immaturity of multiple organ systems, such as cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, vision and hearing impairments, and impaired cognitive development. PTB has become a worldwide public health problem, but its etiology remains unclear. Accumulating evidence shows that PTB is a syndrome that can be attributed to a variety of pathological processes(5). Inflammatory diseases and genetic background are known risk factors for PTB, many studies had shown that genetic variations in proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 α (IL-1 α) are associated with increased risk of PTB, but the relationship between genetic polymorphism in anti-inflammatory cytokines and risk of PTB remains controversial.
