High-rise construction typically implies a multi-storey structure approximately between forty to hundred and twenty meters tall (approximately twelve to forty storeys). On the other hand, composite materials are those made from two or more constituents generally with considerably dissimilar physical or chemical compositions. The focal point in this paper is in-particular on high-rise construction and whether or not composite materials’ structural integrity, and long-term sustainability, is comparable to that of a traditional building. To assess the composite materials’ structural integrity, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) will also be utilised. While, composites possess different characteristics from those common to traditional materials; the universal purpose of producing such materials is to produce matters, which are stronger, lighter, and commonly less expensive. Generally, in construction, the composite materials typically include geo-polymers, fiber-reinforced concrete and others. For high-rise construction, these composite materials require to bear a variety of demanding conditions, including high winds and seismic conditions, which are important design factors for such structures. Nevertheless, a particular benefit of composite materials for high rise construction is their overall ability to maintain structural integrity despite their lack of conventional composition. The composite materials are traditionally utilised for high-rise buildings in order to reinforce the overall structural integrity. Accordingly, this paper will also include a number of case studies to support the ever-increasing utilization of composite materials for high-rise construction.

Storage of CO2 in subsurface can assist to mitigate CO2 emission without extensively interfering with industrial activity and development. The main reason for geological storage to trap CO2 underground for a long time. However, the injection of CO2 may compromise the sealing characteristics of the caprock and, consequently, the containment of the underground CO2 storage unit as well. For instance, the injection of CO2 into a reservoir resulted in pore pressure and temperature changes leading to deformation and stress changes in the injection target and the rocks that surround it. These changes can influence the hydraulic integrity of the geological storage. The potential hazards could then impose different environmental, health, safety, and economic risks. Therefore, the geomechanical assessment of caprock integrity is critical for the storage of carbon dioxide. This research reviewed two different cases of underground CO2 storage in Canada and the workflows used for the assessment of geomechanical effects of CO2 injection on caprock integrity. It reviewed the processes of data collection, geomechanical characterization, and fluid flow modeling. These reviews highlighted the significance of geomechanical characterization and the fact that it is faced with significance challenges that could be addressed by data integration and geostatistical analysis. These reviewed studies implemented both analytical and numerical geomechanical models. While analytical models seem to be great choices for preliminary geomechanical analysis, numerical models are also necessary for a more detailed analysis. Â

The territory’s isolation and integrity are recognized by jurists as criteria for determining the municipalities’ boundaries. Analyzing the geographic studies of the innercity territory morphology, territorial identity and the local communities development potential relationship, the authors come to conclusion that these criteria are not supplied with measurement methodology. As a result the studies are limited by extreme characteristics polygons. The article proposes a methodology for assessing of intracity territories’ isolation and integrity. Considering pedestrian links as the basis of intracity municipal communications, the authors develop a methodology based on the pedestrian graph, which makes more sensitive estimates comparing with transport methods. The indicators of isolation and integrity, as well as the integral indicator are calculated for the territorial units of St. Petersburg–administrative and municipal districts. The authors come to the conclusion that intracity district’s isolation and integrity are in a weak negative relationship with each other and are set by the urban settlement and development policy. According to the integral assessment, island administrative districts and peripheral municipal districts with the 1970s large quarter buildings demonstrate the greatest compliance with the isolation and integrity principles. The authors announce a study of the territory morphology influence on the local self-government development level based on the data presented in this article.

Plagiarism is a serious, yet widespread type of research misconduct, and is often neglected in developing countries. Despite its far-reaching implications, plagiarism is poorly acknowledged and discussed in the academic setting, and insufficient evidence exists in Latin America and developing countries to inform the development of preventive strategies. In this context, we present a longitudinal case study of seven instances of plagiarism and cheating arising in four consecutive classes (2011–2014) of an Epidemiology Masters’ program in Lima, Peru, and describe the implementation and outcomes of a multifaceted, “zero-tolerance” policy aimed at introducing research integrity. Two cases involved cheating in graded assignments, and five cases correspond to plagiarism in the thesis protocol. Cases revealed poor awareness and high tolerance to plagiarism, poor academic performance, and widespread writing deficiencies, compensated with patchwriting and copy-pasting. Depending on the events’ severity, penalties included course failure (6/7) and separation from the program (3/7). Students at fault did not engage in further plagiarism. Between 2011 and 2013, the Masters’ program sequentially introduced a preventive policy consisting of: (i) intensified research integrity and scientific writing education, (ii) a stepwise, cumulative writing process; (iii) honor codes; (iv) active search for plagiarism in all academic products; and (v) a “zero tolerance” policy in response to documented cases. No cases were detected in 2014. In conclusion, plagiarism seems to be widespread in resource-limited settings and a greater response with educational and zero-tolerance components is needed to prevent it.

There are concerns that many national parks worldwide are ineffective at conserving biological diversity and ecosystem processes, are socially unjust in their relations with Indigenous communities, or both. This dissertation asks: can national parks protect ecological integrity and concurrently address social equity issues? It presents empirical results of a systematic evaluation of six case study national parks in Canada and South Africa. Purposive sampling was used to select the six case study national parks. Data sources included State of the Park Reports; park ecological monitoring data; archival data; and semi-structured interviews with park biologists, managers, and Indigenous members of park co-management boards. Status and trend assessments and effectiveness evaluations of park ecological monitoring data were used to evaluate how effectively the parks addressed three ecological integrity criteria. Results show that all six parks effectively addressed the priority indicators for which they had monitoring data. However, the effectiveness ratings of each park decreased when all indicators, including those identified as priorities but lacking monitoring data, were analysed. This indicates that the parks had generally identified more priority indicators than they were actually able to address (for reasons including lack of budget or trained staff, managerial challenges). Thematic coding of semi-structured interview and archival data, and the assignation of numerical ratings to these data, were used to evaluate how effectively the parks addressed three equity criteria. Results show that all but one of the case study parks were equitable, parks with more comprehensive co-management and support from neighbouring Indigenous groups were more equitable than parks with lower levels of co-management, the parks with settled land claims were not necessarily more equitable overall, and a few parks were found to be co-managed in name only. The overall results of this evaluation demonstrate that parks effective at protecting ecological integrity can also successfully address social equity, but that further efforts to integrate these two realms are both possible and necessary. A logical starting point would be to build upon those existing integrative processes already institutionalised in many parks and protected areas: the co-management and integrated conservation and development efforts.

This case study aimed to do a critical, intersectional, policy analysis of a disability policy regarding personal assistance support for basic human needs in everyday life. In January 2019, a comprehensive preparatory report about new suggestions was presented by the Swedish Government. This caused many reactions from disability rights organisations. One particular topic became heated and criticized in the debates, namely interpretations of the legal texts about personal assistance support concerning help with breathing and nutrition feeding. I have analysed interpretations of this legal text in the preparatory report, referral response and its result in the Government bill. The analysis shows problematic, normative understandings about the body and how a specific integrity demand have affected whether a person has been entitled to personal assistance to support their basic needs. Cost efficiency, quantification, and measurable goals are increasingly visible in the Swedish welfare society. People with disabilities and their entitlement to assistance have decreased for the sake of productivity and cost reductions. An intersectional perspective of the policy’s legal texts illustrates how it lacks an essential understanding of human values. There is a need for a deeper perspective of empathy to see that basic human needs are non-measurable.

The aim of this study was to describe patient’s experiences of how privacy is respectedin health care. Every human being has the right to be respected as an individual and notbe subjected to interference in the personal sphere. Since this is not always respected inhealth care, it is interesting to gain knowledge about patient’s experiences. Aqualitative method was used in the study. By using the critical incident techniquepatient’s positive and negative experiences of personal integrity in health care wasreviewed. Nine informants participated and contributed eighteen stories. The materialwas analyzed qualitatively. Three superior themes with five subthemes found. Overall, this phenomenon is about to be respected as a human being. The superior themes are tobe heard, to be seen and to be understood. The result shows that if the personal privacywas not respected, the patient’s felt violated and an unnecessary suffering was therebycreated of health care. The study has implications for health care because the integrityis a fundamental need for patient’s experiences of health and suffering.

The purpose of this study is to, based on qualitative interviews with managers and group interviews with care providers, understand their interpretation of integrity and also their scope for action to satisfy disable people’s integrity at sheltered housing for adults. The questions of this study are: How do the managers and the care providers interpret the concept of integrity? Which scope for action do they have to satisfy the integrity of disabled people? Method: Individual – and group interviews have been used as methods to gather empirical data. Theory: The theories of scope for action and integrity as a theoretical conception have been used to analyze the empirical material. Results: The informants of this study found it difficult to give a specific definition of integrity. The main aspects we could distinguish were that integrity was interpreted as a personal sphere and self-determination. The result of this study shows that the scope for action to satisfy the integrity of disabled people is affected by many factors. First of all the scope for action is affected by the Swedish law LSS and the assignment within the organization. The scope for action is also affected by individual adaption for each person. This study shows the importance of the relationship between the managers, care providers and the persons. At last the informants emphasize some dilemmas in their scope for action to satisfy the integrity.

The purpose of this study was to create understanding about how the reduction of cash affects societal ideas about integrity. We wanted to research human attitudes to the ongoing reduction of cash use in Sweden from a integrity perspective. The method used was a qualitative approach and the empirical data was collected using a focus group with students and three semi structured interviews in different branches of industry based on their way of working with and handling cash. Participating in the study was five students, a store manager in the grocery store business, an economic advisor at a bank and three investigators at the Swedish central bank. The result was analyzed using a theoretical foundation based on Georg Simmel’s work “The philosophy of money” and other socioeconomic research with a focus on the terms value, power and integrity. The results showed that people in the swedish society are aware and partially wary of the development towards a cash free society. Advantages that were illuminated was a reduced risk of robbery towards banks and businesses, less environmental effects due to reduced transportation and handling of cash, easier payments for consumers and increased profitability of card payments for businesses and a increased difficulty of usage of “black” money within the society. Negative aspects that were brought up were the issues of vulnerable groups in society that rely on cash, a fear that the development is moving too fast and that the society will be increasingly vulnerable when the payment infrastucrure relies on a single point of failure. The integrity aspects that the people in the study discussed showed that society is aware of the risks surrounding digital payments, but that the advantages outweigh the potential negatives, and that there is a strong trust in institutions and businesses in Sweden to not exploit their positions when it comes to the integrity of private individuals.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) can be integrated within the e-commerce sector to make it more sustainable. Methods: Firstly, a literary research was conducted to get an overall picture of the chosen topic for the study, which later was elaborated into a literature framework. Secondly, two case studies were conducted in order to collect empirical data. The data was collected through interviews, where a total of three interviews was conducted. The literature framework and the multiple case studies were then cross-analyzed with each other. Findings: Throughout the thesis several trade-offs regarding the three dimensions of sustainability have been identified and evaluated, and they are all clearly presented in a compiled table. The findings also indicates that the sustainable actions a company may make needs to be thoroughly communicated through their websites since the e-commerce disables the face-to-face interactions. It is of great importance for companies to increase the consumer awareness and knowledge in order to motivate them in to being sustainable. Theoretical Contribution: This thesis contributes to science by the unification of the e-commerce and the three dimensions of sustainability. The study thus merge science with empirics to create a deeper knowledge and contribute to the body of literature with a compiled table of trade-offs. Practical Contribution: Practitioners will be enlightened of the importance of all the three dimensions of sustainability, and they will understand the concept and events of trade-offs for sustainability when working within e-commerce. The thesis also provides insight for companies to learn how very important it is with better communication about sustainability factors to its consumers. Limitations: This study is delimited to the e-commerce connected to business to consumer (B2C). The study will only involve Swedish companies and will not investigate them on an intra-organizational level. They will be treated as “black boxes”, as the focus only will be on the three dimensions of sustainability in relation to e-commerce, and not any organizational structures or consumers in detail.

Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The River Health Programme (RHP) is an assessment tool for monitoring the ecological state of rivers to ensure that they remain fit for use by present and future generations. This study, forming part of a RHP assessment conducted on the south-western Cape Hout Bay, Lourens and Palmiet Rivers, has the aim to (1) zone the rivers for representative site selection, (2) assess their habitat integrity (HI), (3) determine the influence of land use on riverine HI and (4) assess the river water quality at the time of the RHP assessments. (1) The desktop geomorphological zonation method used in RHP assessments has not been sufficiently previously tested on short rivers draining the Western Cape Mountains. The Lowland River Zone of the rivers studied, as well as the Hout Bay River’s Upper Foothill Zone, were found to have steeper gradients than expected, probably due to these rivers being shorter and consequently steeper than any on which the method was previously tested. The notion of one gradient river classification system being applicable throughout South Africa, with its diverse geology and climate, is unlikely. Rather a classification system modified for various physiographic features regions or by a factor based on river length is more realistic. (2) Although there is a general longitudinal decrease in HI downstream along the Hout Bay and Lourens Rivers, coinciding with increased anthropogenic activities, HI improves in the Palmiet River’s lower reaches through the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Surrounding land use thus seems to be a major determinant of HI. Although the Index of Habitat Integrity (IHI) used appears to achieve its aim, it was found to be subjective. Categorisation of the IHI scoring is suggested. (3) The amount of natural versus disturbed land use occurring upstream of a site at a regional and local scale, is a good predictor of riverine HI. Regional alien forestry and local urbanisation have significantly strong negative effects on instream (r2 = -0.80, r2 = 0.80, p<0.05) and riparian (r2 = -0.81, r2 = -0.83, p<0.05) HI. Different land use types therefore appear to affect riverine HI at differing scales and thus managers must not only think on a local but also a catchment scale. (4) In the Hout Bay River, a filtering system (e.g. wetland) appears to improve the water quality between the middle and lower reaches. Along the Lourens River, high total dissolved salts, conductivity and inorganic nitrogen concentrations in the middle reaches are cause for concern. Along the Palmiet River there appeared to be insufficient oxygen to support most aquatic life forms at Grabouw. Impoundments in the middle reaches act as sinks for nutrients and salts, but the Huis and Krom tributaries downstream then appear to degrade the water quality of the Palmiet River’s lower reaches within the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Together with the results of simultaneous biotic assessments, these results should be used to develop management actions to improve the ecological health of these rivers. The results have been used in a State-of-Rivers Report for the south-western Cape.

This chapter presents a case study of a multistorey reinforced concrete building, the Silverton Building, constructed in Canberra (Australia) in 1983, evacuated in 1989 due to concerns regarding its structural integrity, and demolished in 1994. The events, associated with the evacuation of the building, initiated court proceedings that ran between 1989 and 1997. In the description presented in this chapter of the structural issues affecting the integrity of the building, particular attention has been placed to avoid allocating blame to specific parties involved in the project and to utilise this case study as an opportunity to revisit the risks and responsibilities of engineers associated with structural engineering design and assessment. Personal remarks of the authors are also provided and clearly highlighted.

AbstractThis chapter describes how academic plagiarism poses a challenge for digital humanities, when sophisticated tools make it possible to discover inappropriate academic activity. Focusing on dissertations defended in Russia in recent years, the authors discuss academic plagiarism and examine the changing norms of academic integrity. Section 27.1 introduces the questions under consideration. The next describes various types of plagiarism and computational tools used to detect them. Section 27.3 reviews available digitized resources. The activities of the Dissernet network are described in Sect. 27.4, which presents an overall picture of findings based on large-scale (more than 50%) plagiarism in dissertations. The case study described in Sect. 27.5 concerns small-scale plagiarism within the same academic genre, raising the question of academic authenticity’s shifting norms.

AbstractAlthough society is (slowly) evolving, rigid gender stereotypes still persist in the world of professional sports. In line with the creation of a strict binary division of athletes, sex-testing policies based on stereotypical considerations of womanhood have come to target ‘overly masculine’ women athletes with variations of sex characteristics (VSC), as elevated levels of testosterone are believed to constitute a competitive advantage. Some international sports federations, such as World Athletics, have adopted hormonal eligibility criteria (HEC) for women’s sports competitions, although the underlying scientific evidence has been strongly contested. Athletes are excluded if they do not comply with these requirements. The standard way of reducing testosterone levels is via the use of hormonal contraceptives, although irreversible surgical treatment also occurs. HEC for sports competitions raises important issues in respect of the fundamental rights of professional women athletes with VSC, and have been challenged before the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).In this chapter, we analyze the HEC set by World Athletics in light of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which is the relevant framework for addressing human rights concerns since Switzerland accepts jurisdiction for appeals against CAS decisions. We discuss the relevant societal background, argue how HEC for sports competitions violates the individual’s right to bodily and mental integrity as protected by Article 3 ECHR, and explain that the scope of the state’s positive obligations under Article 8 ECHR needs to be interpreted as encompassing a duty to ensure the effective protection of an athlete’s bodily and psychological integrity. Finally, we set out why HEC directed at women athletes with VSC amounts to intersectional discrimination in breach of Article 14 ECHR in conjunction with Articles 3 and 8 ECHR.

In all phases of the service life of a structure, uncertainties will occur, hence probability based methodologies may be an important and valuable tool in order to verify structural integrity and the corresponding expected safety level. This paper gives a brief description of an approach for how to demonstrate the safety of facilities in the life extension phase by the use of risk based inspection (RBI) plans. This is illustrated with four separate cases used for assessment and life extension of FPSOs operating in harsh environments on the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS). The assessments are partly based on the methodology introduced in NORSOK (2009).

Abstract Ensuring integrity of a pipeline network is an essential activity for a pipeline operator. Pipeline integrity management programs are designed to identify and mitigate potential risks to pipeline to maintain safe and reliable operation of pipelines. To support decision making about integrity management, interpretation of data is necessary and better insights of data can be achieved by visualization of data. Visualization enables users to identify patterns, trends, and relationships quickly and easily in the data that might not be immediately apparent through textual or numerical data alone. Data visualization through Augmented Reality (AR) is an emerging trend that allows users to view and interact with data in a more immersive and interactive way. Going a step ahead, Mixed Reality (MR) combines Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and other forms of digital content to produce a seamless environment in which digital objects are placed in real-world settings, allowing users to interact with them in real-time. MR technology provides pipeline inspectors with a more immersive and detailed view of the pipeline, allowing them to identify potential issues such as gouges, corrosion, and dents etc. This can help to improve the accuracy of inspections and reduce the risk of human error. The paper discusses about the potential uses of Mixed Reality (MR) technology in pipeline industry including several case studies. First case includes study on an offshore pipeline dent, wherein the repair decisions were supported by the virtual model of the dent profile. In another case, MR technology was used by the experts sitting at office to see and identify causes of failure through the MR headset. The technology has also been used to see drone footage of pipeline Right of Use (RoU) for assessing coating refurbishment works. Fourth case study includes visualization of digital elevation model for the sites identifies for washouts based on Artificial Neural Network. Last case includes visualization of seabed profile using a multibeam side scan sonar. The technology requires specialized hardware, software, and algorithms. Several algorithms were created to digest various survey and open-source data such as Inline inspection, drone imagery, 3D photogrammetry, sonar surveys and satellite data. Several datasets and assets were modelled to create a digital 3D library. The library thus forms a Metaverse where users can import data models and evaluate the asset using mixed reality device in a collaborative environment. MR technology has enhanced intuitive view of the pipeline, allowing the pipeline operators to identify and repair issues more quickly and efficiently, thereby, reducing downtime and minimizing disruption to pipeline operations. In summary, the use of mixed reality for visualizing integrity of pipelines has several potential applications which is going to increase manifolds in the coming future as it offers new paradigm for communication and better collaboration by replacing flat displays and keyboards with 3D, virtual and interactive environment which is a major shift in user engagement.

Abstract This paper presents an investigation into the sudden changes in water cut in oil producer wells and their impact on well integrity. The study proposes a comprehensive workflow supported by various case studies. Additionally, the research explores the salinity variation across different formations, the water samples acquired from various locations in the reservoirs, both aerially and vertically. The workflow, while straightforward, proves crucial in preventing significant well integrity issues that could have been addressed at an early stage. It commences as soon as the well experiences a sudden increase in water cut. First, a water sample is collected for geochemical analysis and salinity estimation, cross-referenced with the reservoir's aquifer data. If the figures match, it indicates that the water source is the aquifer; however, discrepancies may indicate casing leaks or water flow behind the casing. To confirm the external water source, a temperature log is conducted to detect abnormal temperature anomaly; i.e. cooling effect. If such anomaly is observed, a corrosion log is used to identify the casing leak depth in the well. Appropriate actions, such as cement squeeze, liner, scab liner or casing patching, are then undertaken. If no cooling effect is observed, USIT (ultrasonic Imaging tool) is used to asses the cement bond behind the casing. Additionally, a water flow log (WFL) is mandatory to confirm the presence of flow behind the casing, and a cement quality log is also obtained. A presence of a temperature anomaly suggests a hole puncture in the casing, while poor-quality cementing indicates flow behind the casing. Subsequently, remedial actions are implemented based on the obtained results. Adhering to this workflow enables an early resolution of potential well integrity issues, mitigating risks and ensuring smooth long-term operations. An investigation of three cases yielded significant findings, particularly a distinct observation of a cooling effect and temperature increase in a non-producing well. Prior to conducting the temperature logs, water samples were collected from all wells, revealing lower salinity values compared to the aquifer salinity. Subsequently, the temperature log confirmed the presence of a casing hole, which was promptly patched. In Case 1, the estimated salinity value was in the range of 100,000 ppm compared to the actual salinity of 170,000 ppm. The temperature log clearly indicated a notable increase in temperature along the wellbore, which is attributed to water influx from the shallow water-bearing zone during a shut-in period in the well's life. Case 2 also demonstrated a casing leak across a water-bearing zone, as the salinity dropped from 190,000 ppm to 97,000 ppm. Prompt remedial actions were taken to patch this casing hole. Regular temperature logging is now scheduled as a proactive measure in case of potential casing leaks. Various remedial actions are available, including water shut-off, cement squeeze, scab liners to seal leaking intervals, or running a smaller liner to seal the leaking zone. However, caution is required in selecting the appropriate method, as some options may reduce the well's ID and restrict production. In Case 3, a casing leak was also identified across a water-bearing zone, and a temperature anomaly was observed in the wellbore. The detection of this temperature anomaly provided a clear indication of potentially causing integrity issues in the area adjacent of the water-bearing zone. Upon further investigation, including the use of diagnostic techniques such as corrosion logging, the casing leak was confirmed. In conclusion, a well-detailed workflow has been established, striking a balance between logging, water salinity measurements, and well monitoring to prevent any integrity issues and crossflows in the wells. This time-efficient methodology assists engineers in identifying the source of produced water and maintaining well health. The implementation of simple water shut-off techniques, casing remedial actions, and strategic production strategies effectively address water-related issues, safeguarding well integrity against water flow from casing leaks.

Abstract A significant challenge occasionally faced during the well's lifecycle is the pressure buildup between the cemented annuli, also known as sustained casing pressure (SCP). The presence of SCP indicates a path of flow of formation fluids to the surface. Compromise of cement sheath integrity is one of the primary reasons for such a pressure buildup. This challenge prompted the development of such an isolation material that should enhance the mechanical properties of cement to prevent the SCP. In parallel, another isolation material was required to remediate the wells suffering from SCP. After some research, a specialized resin system was developed that could be deployed to prevent and eliminate the SCP in the situations mentioned above. This paper presents the lab testing and application of the innovative resin system. This system can be used as a standalone product and blended with cement, depending upon the nature of the application and zonal isolation objective. While using the resin as a standalone product, its solids-free nature and low yield point enable it to flow freely into micron-sized leaks or channels. Pure resin is mainly used for remedial applications. When the resin is added to the cement during primary cementing operations, it forms a dense and highly cross-linked matrix with improved mechanical properties that helps to provide a dependable barrier to maintain long-term zonal isolation. Engineered solutions ultimately deliver the optimal asset value of the reservoir. During the last few decades, several laboratory investigations and field studies have been conducted to find answers to the problem of SCP, which appears after primary or remedial cement jobs. Almost all these studies unanimously conclude that conventional cement does not always endure the mechanical stresses imposed by the wellbore conditions, and it often falls short in providing permanent isolation beyond the well's production life. This paper illustrates two case studies to validate this. The first case study is related to primary cementing, where the resin-cement blend was successfully utilized to prevent the expected high-pressure influx across a water-bearing formation. The resin-cement system was designed to be placed as a tail slurry to provide enhanced mechanical properties compared to a conventional slurry. The combined mixture of resin and cement slurry provided the desired product's necessary properties. The cement treatment was performed as designed and met all zonal isolation objectives. The second case study relates to remedial cementing, where the resin system was utilized to remediate the three annuli on an offshore oil well. Reliable and effective annular barriers are critical to well management for safety and performance. Conventional Cement slurries have been the industry's typical means of creating these barriers. However, the cement alone is inadequate to meet the industry needs; hence, combined solutions deliver improved well integrity.

Abstract Incompetent shoe tracks are typical in oil well cementing and cost many hours of lost rig time for remediation. An incompetent shoe track results from unset, severely contaminated, or no cement inside the casing section between the float collar and shoe after a primary cement job. This paper will address several case studies where a systematic and engineered approach was utilized to apply various solutions that helped to improve the shoe track integrity. The wet shoe has been of the utmost attention to oil and gas companies, as expensive remedial cementing operations are needed to repair the deficiency in shoe track integrity. After a thorough process review, many opportunities were identified to improve the cementing basis of design, such as lead and tail slurries for liners and multiple stage jobs, increased length of shoe track, the addition of bottom wiper plugs, and the use of lost circulation material in the spacer and cement slurries. This paper illustrates the case studies where the above-stated methods were successfully applied to improve the shoe track integrity. Some of the major contributing factors to incompetent shoe track integrity were identified as attempting to cement the long sections with a single slurry, excessive thickening time requirements to accommodate the operation of liner hangers and stage tools, over-displacement of cement during placement, overestimated bottom hole temperatures, severe or total losses during cement placement, cement slurry contamination by the lack of a bottom wiper plug, and picking weak casing point. It was also observed that the consequences of poor shoe track integrity were amplified in challenging drilling environments where formations were either reactive, hard and abrasive, abnormally pressured, high downhole temperature, or prone to lost circulation. As a result, an increased effort was put in place to eliminate the poor shoe track integrity by implementing the opportunities identified during the process review. Cement inside the shoe track was found to take more weight on bit and have a slower penetration rate during drill out. Also, the required casing and formation integrity tests were achieved even in areas historically prone to compromised shoe track integrity. This confirmed the success of this systematic cementing approach and helped revise the basis of design. This paper presents a detailed study of the novel engineering process that was successfully deployed to plan and execute the primary cement jobs with the assurance of shoe track integrity. In addition, this paper highlights the systematic approach utilized to eliminate or mitigate the occurrences of incompetent shoe track integrity with observed improvement in field deployment results.

In recent years, Latin American and Caribbean countries (LAC) have modernized their public procurement systems and have been able to increase the efficiency and effectiveness in the use of public resources through new practices and technologies to promote greater competitiveness. The award decision based solely on price to ensure efficiency has also evolved into amulticriteria approach to include, beyond price, quality and sustainability criteria (economic, environmental, and social). Through this study, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) contributes to the dialogue in LAC to promote the use of new public procurement procedures and practices. The study presents four innovative cases of procurement practices used in the region. These are inspired in practices in other regions, such as Europe and the United States. This study identifies some trends in public procurement procedures, which promote more flexible contracting frameworks in order to incorporate additional methods based on a broader approach of Value for Money in accordance with the principles of transparency, efficiency, economy, integrity and fairness. Innovation in public procurement contributes towards the achievement of development goals in the region.

Hydrostatic test and In-Line Inspection are the prescribed integrity assessment methods cited in various Codes and Regulations and have been proven to enhance pipeline safety. But a significant number of pipelines across the world remain difficult to inspect and impractical to modify for inspection by the prescribed methods due to physical configurations or operating conditions. This research performs a state of the art (SOTA) analysis of NDE technology readiness considering physical and operational barriers and technology deployment from inside, outside or over pipelines, and the possible role of inspection sampling to conclude pipeline integrity and justify intervals for conversion for piggability or hydrotest. The goal of the research is to propose alternatives to ILI for safe prioritization and scheduling for conversion or replacement and not to replace hydrostatic test or ILI as currently prescribed in Codes and Regulations. The scope of the research is limited to technologies and integrity management concerning metal loss threat. This report represents the third and final update of prior reports from the two preceding years presenting a compendium of technologies describing technology readiness for state of the art non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technologies intended for low resolution pipeline condition screening and high resolution NDE for deployment at sample locations with capabilities applicable to difficult to inspect pipeline configurations. Integrated cleaning and inspection pigs, smart balls, external deployed ultrasonic, radiographic and magnetometry are pipe wall screening technologies evaluated in the reports. A structured process is proposed for assessing pipeline integrity based on low resolution screening of the full length of a pipeline segment followed by high resolution NDE samples at locations where screening indicates locations of possible wall loss. The process employs extreme value analysis for prediction of maximum metal loss severity across the screened segment. For instances where no metal loss indications reported by screening or from high resolution samples an alternative "compliance approach" is also addressed. Case studies are presented where PRCI members have deployed some of the technologies referenced in the NDE SOTA phase of the research and implemented the proposed extreme value or the compliance approaches. Validation of fitness for service conclusions based on inspection sampling by comparison with full length high resolution ILI or hydrostatic test are included in some of the case studies. The conclusions of the case studies demonstrate integrity conclusions obtained from the PRCI structured process are conservative and consistent with ILI or hydrostatic test conclusions. Based on the experience from the case studies and the SOTA, a metal loss screening efficiency factor (MLSE) is proposed enabling pipeline operators to understand the general relationship between screening level (sample stratification) and direct examination (inspection sampling) required to provide equivalent understanding of pipe wall condition, limited to metal loss. As mentioned by ASME/API ILI has limitations that need to be considered in its deployment and full discovery of metal loss conditions. Under some conditions (noted by API 1163) ILI predictions can be accepted without any direct examinations or verifications, i.e full length screening (high resolution) and no verification samples. At the other end of the spectrum random sampling can be theoretically deployed as a screening approach but depending on the condition of the pipeline, the high-resolution sample area could be very large to obtain a significant integrity conclusion. This report proposes a comparative scale of effectiveness for SOTA pipe wall screening technologies that offer the operator an expectation of high resolution NDE sample size. Although governments, civil society organizations, and academia are crucial actors in the effort to fight corruption and promote integrity, private firms and industry organizations also play critical roles. This publication features seven case studies that highlight results and lessons learned in private sector integrity projects, all but one of which were supported by the Inter-American Development Bank and IDB Invest. These studies include initiatives by Peru's largest industry confederation and Panama's banking association to encourage member companies to upgrade their internal ethics and compliance practices. Also, the adoption of new regulations requiring the disclosure of ultimate beneficial owners of financial assets is shown to discourage tax fraud and money laundering in Ecuador, Uruguay, and other countries. An annual index issued by the Jamaican Stock Exchange evaluates and scores the quality of governance in listed companies, thereby enabling investors to identify firms with superior integrity safeguards. A coalition of private and public shipping entities joins forces to dismantle an extortion scheme in Argentinas ports. A private bank in Suriname uses strict integrity standards as an effective client acquisition tool, and a global summary of best practices in procurement and contracting offers guidance for preventing corruption in infrastructure projects.

This is a new revision of the Year 2 work. The NDE-3-2 project seeks to advance the state of the art for integrity assessment of difficult to inspect pipelines by proposing guidance for application of alternate inspection approaches other than hydrostatic test, in-line inspection and ECDA/ICDA currently prescribed by Code and Regulations. The hydrostatic test and in-line inspection methods for integrity assessment have in common the concept that the full length of the pipeline is assessed. Many pipelines exhibit configuration and operational issues that preclude integrity assessment by the prescribed methods. The ECDA/ICDA structured processes employ evaluation of protective barriers followed by deployment of a small sample of high resolution wall thickness measurements. The NDE-3-2 study proposes a new structured process that evaluates low resolution NDE data of the pipe wall for the full length of the pipeline followed by statistically significant numbers of high resolution wall thickness measurements to predict the condition of the pipeline relative to the fitness for service criterion of corroded pipe such as prescribed in ASME B31G. While conventional ILI inspections or hydrotest rely on full coverage as the basis for evaluating the integrity of a pipeline segment, this structured process would seek to use partial inspections at discrete locations and then use Extreme Value Analysis to estimate the integrity of pipeline segments. The objective is not to provide guidance to replace ILI or hydrostatic testing but rather to offer an alternative for the purposes of gathering data to justify the safe prioritization of piggability conversion or pipeline replacement of difficult to inspect pipelines for both onshore and subsea. This report documents the current state-of-the-art for corrosion location NDE, selection models, and Extreme Value Analysis (EVA) Methodologies for deployment in a structured process as an Alternative to In-Line Inspection of difficult to inspect pipelines. The research on NDE screening technologies addressed in this report reviews technologies identified in the Year 1 work that can be used to screen the condition of pipe wall along its full length as well as existing location selection models such as employed by Direct Assessment Methodologies. This report leverages extensive research that has been conducted on existing Extreme Value Analysis Methodologies from multiple sources and applications including metal corrosion (HOIS, HSE), pipeline corrosion, metocean criteria, wind loading, and multiple textbooks. Multiple case studies are summarized in this report that demonstrate the use of the Partial Inspection Integrity Assessment process utilizing EVA on segments of a pipeline compared to results from full length integrity assessments (either ILI or hydrotest). This report also documents a full Extreme Value Analysis using a demonstration case study and then compares the EVA results with the wall thickness measurements from a full length integrity assessment as a validation example. Ultimately, it is the goal of NDE-3-2 to identify more case studies that might serve as demonstrations. The report also identifies gaps that currently exist and the work that must be completed to develop a complete validated structured process required to deploy the technologies for integrity assessment of difficult to inspect pipelines. The research also aims to compare predictions of remaining life using statistical approaches applied to the partial inspection data with remaining life obtained from conventional integrity assessment using ILI or hydrostatic test.

River ecosystems are highly dependent on and responsive to hydrologic variability over multiple time scales (e.g., hours, months, years). Fluctuating river flows present a key challenge to river managers, who must weigh competing demands for freshwater. Environmental flow recommendations and regulations seek to provide management targets balancing socio-economic outcomes with maintenance of ecological integrity. Often, flow management targets are based on average river conditions over temporal windows such as days, months, or years. Here, three case studies of hydrologic variability are presented at each time scale, which demonstrate the potential pitfalls of mean-based environmental flow criteria. Each case study shows that the intent of the environmental flow target is not met when hydrologic variability is considered. While mean discharge is inadequate as a single-minded flow management target, the consequences of mean flow prescriptions can be avoided in environmental flow recommendations. Based on these case studies, a temporal hierarchy of environmental flow thresholds is proposed (e.g., an instantaneous flow target coupled with daily and monthly averages), which would improve the efficacy of these regulations.

There is a broad consensus that agri-food systems need to be transformed to address the mounting global challenges including food and nutrition security, environmental degradation, and socioeconomic inequities. However, agreement is lacking on what is needed to drive this transformation. This report builds on a sustainability analysis of different proposed pathways and approaches to address transformative needs. It also serves as a study of the drivers and agents that support the implementation of these proposed pathways in different cases around the globe. We recommend the adoption of a multi-level governance framework to coordinate the transformation of agri-food systems, guaranteeing the attainment of transformation goals across all levels. This includes global agreements and international goals at the international level, national transformation pathways at the country level, and the operational level embedded in local governance. This report introduces the Agri-food Systems Transformation Protocol as a decision-support protocol at the desired operational level serving different actors within agri-food systems. The Agri-food Systems Transformation Protocol proposes a four-stage and nine-step iterative process that can guide the development of transformation pathways in different contexts and at different levels of implementation. It was conceived during a workshop of the Expert Advisory Group of the Assessment and Communication of Climate Impacts of Food (CLIF) project in June 2023. The aim was to develop a step-by-step guide to transforming food systems that is not prescriptive and follows a rights-based, place-based, systems approach. The protocol was informed by background research on different case studies from the agri-food sector and advances the three principles of preserving the rights of people, ecosystem integrity, and integrity of the process. The background study identified the main drivers and agents of transformation by analysing 14 case studies from five continents, a selection that was finalized at the expert workshop. A transformation matrix that maps the agents and drivers with different steps of transformation process is also presented to aid the implementation of the protocol. This protocol is intended to be the first step in developing a transformative theory of change for agri-food systems, with the methodologies for each step being the subject of further development.

Regular monitoring and inspection of military railroad tracks are necessary to ensure the safe transportation of military freight. Manual railroad inspection has drawbacks and limitations that can impact accuracy and efficiency. This study introduces a novel tool designed to automate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) imaging interpretation for railroad ballast condition assessment, aiming to reduce human intervention in inspections. The tool uses advanced signal processing techniques, such as the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and Wavelet Transform (WT), to quantify ballast fouling levels accurately, enhancing maintenance and safety protocols for railroad tracks. Validation through comprehensive testing, including two case studies, demonstrates the tool’s superior efficacy over traditional manual inspection methods. This research represents a pivotal step towards more efficient and reliable infrastructure management, ensuring critical railroad systems’ safety and operational integrity.

Hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) within the wall of line pipe is a threat recognized by the pipeline industry; the industry could benefit from a standardize approach to determining threat susceptibility as well as a methodology to estimate the anticipated growth rate of HIC given a set of pipe design, environmental conditions, and operational parameters. The overall objectives of this project were to compile historical literature and references toward understanding HIC as a cracking mechanism and to develop preliminary susceptibility criteria for the threat of HIC. A better understanding of the threat of HIC will reduce product leaks and equipment emissions from all parts of the hydrocarbon transport and storage infrastructure as well as better prepare for the quickly approaching hydrogen economy. A literature review on the current industry understanding of mid-wall HIC[1] was conducted. A summary of key factors influencing HIC and modern integrity management approaches for the phenomenon are summarized. Based on the literature review, gaps in published industry knowledge were identified. A literature review was also conducted on the performance of non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques (both in-line and field) and their ability to detect and size mid-wall HIC. A description of the techniques (considering liquid and gas mediums for in-line technologies) and the current understanding of their performance are summarized. Several case studies that were used to assess non-destructive inspection performance are also summarized. Based upon the current industry understanding of the mid-wall HIC mechanism, as well as the capabilities of NDE technologies, an integrity management framework was developed and is described. As a result of the literature reviews, case studies, and framework development, a number of gaps in industry knowledge and experience were identified. Most importantly, there is a need for continuous improvement of NDE technologies. Results of the gap analysis should be used to drive work to mitigate the onset of mid-wall HIC and to identify the presence of mid-wall cracking so that the threat can be actively and effectively managed. [1] The terms mid-wall cracking (MWC) and hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) are synonymous in this report.

This report presents a case study for constructing aggregate subgrade improvement (ASI) layers using quarry by-product aggregates (QBA), a quarry mix of large primary crushed rocks (PCR) and sand-sized quarry fines. The construction took place at Larry Power Road in Bourbonnais Township in Kankakee County, Illinois, where the Illinois Department of Transportation placed two QBA mixes. The first mix (QBA_M1) consisted of 45% quarry by-products and 55% railroad ballast–sized 3×1 PCR. The second mix (QBA_M2) consisted of 31% and 69% quarry by-products and PCR, respectively. Two conventional ASI sections were also constructed conforming to Illinois Department of Transportation’s CS02 gradation. All sections consisted of a 9 in. (229 mm) QBA/PCR layer topped with a 3 in. (76 mm) dense-graded capping layer. Laboratory studies preceded the construction to recommend optimum quarry by-product content in the QBA materials and construction practice. The Illinois Center for Transportation research team monitored the quality and uniformity of the construction using nondestructive testing techniques such as dynamic cone penetrometer, lightweight deflectometer, and falling weight deflectometer. The segregation potential was monitored by visual inspection and imaging-based techniques. Short-term field evaluation of the constructed QBA layers, particularly QBA_M2 with a 31% quarry by-product content, showed no evidence of abnormal segregation and did not jeopardize the structural integrity of the QBA ASI layers, which had slightly lower but comparable strength and stiffness profiles to the conventional ASI sections. The use of QBA materials in ASI was field validated as a sustainable construction practice to provide stable pavement foundation layers.
