The purpose of this systematic study review was to describe how researchers integrated mobile devices into outdoor science learning, assessment of those activities, and alignment of purpose, integration, and assessment. From initial 980 search results, the authors selected 45 articles based on the eligibility criteria of: (a) empirical study; (b) learning activity with science content; (c) outdoor setting; (d) mobile device integration; and (e) assessement. Researchers designed outdoor science learning activities integrated with mobile devices for the purposes of science knowledge gain, affective domain gain, and scientific inquiry. Researchers aligned components of scientific inquiry including hypothesis formation, observation, data collection and interpretation, and communication and collaboration. Conclusions describe benefits to integrating mobile devices with outdoor science learning activities by supporting scientific inquiry skill development. Alignment of purpose and assessment provides evidence of student learning important in meeting accountability standards.

Abstract Anthropologists and philosophers have typically been skeptical about the use of dramatic vignettes in the study of ethics, in particular targeting three characteristic features of such devices—stylization, simplification, and selectivity—and arguing that they undermine ethical inquiry. I argue that this skepticism misconstrues the aims of arguments that incorporate such devices. Rather than seeing them as botched attempts at historical or scientific reporting, we should evaluate dramatic vignettes as a genre of ethically illuminating speculative fiction, useful for understanding the concepts and counterfactual commitments that are embedded in our ethical practices. So construed, they sit in a wider methodological context that vindicates them as a useful part of ethical inquiry.

Biology learning process that occurs in SMAN 2 Muara Teweh still using devices based learning and student handbooks with the curriculum SBC devices are arranged in the Subject Teachers Council (MGMP). Student handbook based curriculum SBC used as basis for the preparation of such devices in general. Learning with the inquiry model of bacterial material has never been used by teachers in order to improve the learning spirit of students to learn. The material of bacteria is one of the materials related to the scientific attitude. The aim of this study is to produce a software development learning inquiry model with the concept of high school students of class X bacteria valid and practical and can study the implementation of the concept of bacteria using a model of an effective inquiry. Samples were individual trials that test 3 and test experts legibility on 6 students, small groups of test class numbered 19 students and class field tests totaling 24 students. The instrument of this research is the syllabus, lesson plans, worksheets, assessment sheets, key pieces of assessment, teaching materials, process observation sheet, psychomotor skills, critical thinking, character, social behavior and the activities of teachers and students. Data retrieved student learning outcomes through pretest and posttest in learning the concept of bacteria using inquiry model. Activity observation sheet obtained under observation while the activities of the skills assessed by sheets of skills. It can be concluded that Practicality learning device has been reached. the enforceability of RPP and either categorized student activity, student responses almost all the students are very happy. The effectiveness of the learning device has also been met, it is based on the cognitive learning products and cognitive processes has reached mastery that students get the value of N-gain with high category, the assessment results psychomotor skills, assessment of social attitudes and attitude of the character, as well as critical thinking has been included in both categories, research can produce development tools through inquiry model valid, practical and effective.

Based on clinical supervision at Loban 1 Public High School, most of the teachers have not developed their own learning tools, so that relevance to learning in schools needs to be addressed. This research & development uses the ASSURE development model on the Mushroom concept using the guided inquiry learning model and the 5M approach. The purpose of this study is to develop a mushroom concept learning device using a model of guided inquiry in high school that is valid, practical and effective. The subject of research & development is a learning device while the object of research is students of SMA 1 Loban River, Tanah Bumbu Regency. Individual trials were carried out in the X-MIA3 class, and small group tests in the X-MIA2 class and field tests were carried out in the X-MIA1 class. Data on the validity of learning devices include validation by three experts, data on the practicality of learning devices including assessment of the implementation of lesson plans, student responses to learning, observation of teacher and student activities during learning activities and the level of effectiveness of learning devices including a) cognitive and product learning outcomes. b) results of the assessment of performance skills, c) results of the assessment of social attitudes, d) results of spiritual attitude assessment, and e) results of the assessment of critical thinking skills. The results of the study showed that the learning devices that had been developed had fulfilled the indicators of validity, practicality, and effectiveness, thus the Mushroom concept learning tools developed by using the guided inquiry model and the 5M approach could already be used in learning activities.

The limitations of inquiry-based learning tools have an impact on the low critical thinking skills of elementary students in science learning. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning tools to improve critical thinking skills. The study design is a quasi nonequivalent control group experiment. The experimental class was treated with inquiry-based learning devices, the control class was implemented with STAD-based learning devices. The population and sample in this study were students in grades IVA and IVB at SDN Kepanjen 2 and SDN Panggungrejo 4. This study was conducted for one month from August to September 2022. The instrument used was a critical thinking skills test. The validity test is calculated based on the Aiken index. Data were analyzed based on the pair t-test. The results of this study indicate a very significant difference in students' critical thinking skills. The average score of students' critical thinking before the use of inquiry learning tools in the experimental class was 53.59 and after being used was 82.44. Control group students have an average critical thinking ability of 42.35 and thereafter 59.88. There are factors that affect the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning tools including the validity of the device, the difference in the average score of critical thinking skills which is very significant for students in the experimental and control groups, the responses of students and teachers, and the implementation of learning. In conclusion, instructional inquiry tools are effective for improving critical thinking skills. This study recommends the development of inquiry-based learning tools to improve students' critical thinking skills.

This exploratory study examines the use of integrated and complementary technology systems including mobile devices to explore an instructional experience designed to provoke observational inquiry and geological reasoning with upper elementary and middle school students. Mobile devices combined with classroom-based computer technology loaded with Google EarthTM software provided enhanced and varying views of a geological phenomenon allowing students to identify and reason about visual evidence of erosion in their local environment. A socio-cultural frame was also employed to examine the data in relation to social structures, cultural practices and individual agency. Findings indicate that the incorporation of mobile devices into an overarching instructional intervention involving geological observational inquiry promoted enhanced geological observation and reasoning in the field as well as demonstrated some evidence of appropriation in shifts of agency, social structures and cultural practices for the students in this study.

Inquiry is a core of science learning. One of the factors of success in learning in the classroom is determined by the existence of learning tools that are appropriate to the learning objectives. This study aims to determine the extent of the feasibility of inquiry learning devices at the junior high school level to drive science process skills. The research method uses descriptive quantitative. Data analysis was performed on the results of the validator using content validity. As 2 expert validators came from 2 different colleges and one from school practitioners. Validated learning tools consist of lesson plan, teaching materials, and assessment. Lesson plan developed using inquiry learning model with OMGVA syntax (observation-manipulation-generalization-verivication-application). Validation method uses the Aiken model. The results obtained show that all learning devices are valid with a range of 0.8 and 1 values, meaning that inquiry learning devices can be used to train process skills in junior high school level.

Анотація:
The purpose of this research are: (1) to determine the characteristic of humanistic statistics learning, (2) to obtain a humanistic statistics learning tools based on valid, practical, and effective inquiry and mind mapping learning model. The research method uses 4D Thiagarajan which has been modified to 3D, namely: define, design, and develop. Implementation of the development and humanistic statistics learning tool trials using Inquiry and Mind Mapping learning model show that learning tools used in statistical learning activities were practical and effective. The trial shows an increase of students’ statistical problem-solving ability using humanistic learning based on Inquiry and Mind Mapping learning model. The improvement of statistical problem-solving on Inquiry learning model is better than humanistic statistics learning using Mind Mapping learning model.

Graphene electronics represent a developing field where many material properties and devices characteristics are still unknown. Researching several possible fabrication processes creates a fabrication process using resources found at Cal Poly a local industry sponsor. The project attempts to produce a graphene network in the shape of a fractal Sierpinski carpet. The fractal geometry proves that PDMS microfluidic channels produce the fine feature dimensions desired during graphene oxide deposit. Thermal reduction then reduces the graphene oxide into a purified state of graphene. Issues arise during thermal reduction because of excessive oxygen content in the furnace. The excess oxygen results in devices burning and additional oxidation of the gate contacts that prevents good electrical contact to the gates. Zero bias testing shows that the graphene oxide resistance decreases after thermal reduction, proving that thermal reduction of the devices occurs. Testing confirms a fabrication process producing graphene electronics; however, revision of processing steps, especially thermal reduction, should greatly improve the yield and functionality of the devices.

The research was conducted through qualitative research practices such as an autoethnographic recounting of a personal privacy scare on a mobile device, personal interviews regarding the individual’s own online data, and observed reactions to relevant instances regarding for instance surveillance apps. This research was done while considering a wide breadth of texts and articles relevant to the question of what things like dataveillance look like today, how they affect our lives and how they may take form in the future. This research finally culminates in the form of a short film in which these topics are framed in a speculative and somewhat more dystopian near future scenario

This thesis is a narrative account of how I have transformed my learning and teaching strategies for Grade 9 learners, generating my own living theory of teaching within a social context with the aim of enabling my learners to construct their own knowledge. My value-embedded practice is reflected in the values I attach to equality, inclusivity, social justice and basic human rights. These embodied values are also a reflection of my commitment to my Christian values which encompass my entire existence and have become the living standards by which I judge the quality of my research. My classroom-based action research methodology is a living transformational process which heralds a change for a more just practice and the inclusion and recognition of the individual. My findings about my learners’ and my own learning offer new conceptualisations about the capacity of my learners to learn in their own unique ways and according to their own potential. I am claiming that the significance of my research is grounded in my ability to demonstrate how I can unleash the untapped potential of learners failing to attain the desired outcomes. I show them how to learn confidently and successfully within a social context using prior knowledge, scaffolding and motivation as teaching and learning tools. This has potential inspiration for new forms of practice and theory in aiming to improve learners’ potential. A significant feature of my account is how my Christian values have been translated into my critical epistemological standards of judgement, and the development of a living theory of practice that enables me to account for educational influences in my learners’ and my own learning.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) “Prevention through Design” (PtD) initiative encourages the exploration of different methods to foster dialogue between engineers and healthcare workers. Although engineers are encouraged to follow a user-centered design (UCD) process to identify user needs (ANSI/AAMI, 2009; IEC, 2007), NORA (2009) warns that engineers may “fail to get the full range of healthcare worker input on the usability of a device”. The primary goal of this research was to present storytelling as an elicitation method that addressed the PtD call for methods that improve usability within healthcare. This work provides three contributions to the PtD initiative. First, a conceptual model for the role of storytelling in design, which represents a synthesis of narrative and design research, is presented. The conceptual model explicitly states how the elicitation and analysis of stories results in the identification of a design opportunity that addresses user needs. Second, the Design + Storytelling framework, which guides designers’ use of storytelling, is presented. An instantiation of the framework specific to the identification of a design opportunity within an emergency room (ER) is investigated to determine the framework’s impact on design. Findings resulted in the study’s third contribution: design guidance comprised of storytelling guidelines, decision support tools for storytelling method selection, and traceability support for design evaluation. The investigation of the framework focused on two primary stages: (1) story elicitation and (2) story analysis. Storytelling sessions, which varied in context, collected 573 stories (i.e., 441 habitual, 132 hypothetical) from 28 ER nurses. Qualitative analysts used the framework’s instructions to identify and specify 383 user needs within the narratives. Empirical comparisons of the compiled needs across groups informed decision rules for elicitation method selection. The impact of the framework’s analysis instructions during design practice was investigated. Student design teams analyzed nurses’ safety stories to create a conceptual design for an identified design opportunity. Findings indicated a trend for stakeholder experts to rank conceptual designs created by teams with the instructions as more usable than teams without the framework’s instructions. The theoretical and practical exploration indicated a positive impact on design.

In view of Bluetooth?s growing popularity a lot of research is being done to improve the performance of Bluetooth. Most of the research being performed prerequisites that a connection has already been made. Due to the frequency hopping spread spectrum used by Bluetooth the connection establishment is not as easy as it seams. Two processes have been derived to bridge the frequency discrepancies between devices, inquiry and page. In this thesis, we study the inquiry and page processes and the time it takes to complete a connection with no, one or two voice channels present at the initiating device. We have found the times to complete the processes to be lengthy at best, unreasonably long if there is voice traffic present. Through optimisation, we have decreased the mean time to connect. We propose some changes to the default values of a few time outs and variables, which yields a substantial improvement in performance, especially in the case when there is voice traffic present. The changes are in the software only, no changes in hardware are necessary. After a connection is made a client may want to start using the services of the device it is connected to. This is another topic of this thesis. Bluetooth does not provide means of accessing a service, only discovering it. Thus, there is the need for higher-level protocols for accessing services. We have investigated some of the service discovery protocols currently available.
Med tanke på Bluetooth-teknikens växande popularitet bedrivs mycket forskning för att förbättra Bluetooth-teknikens prestanda. Den mesta delen av forskningen förutsätter att en uppkoppling redan skett. På grund av frekvenshoppningstekniken som används i Bluetooth är detta inte så lätt som det låter. För att överkomma frekvensskillnaden mellan enheter används två processer, inquiry och page. I denna uppsats studerar vi inquiry- och page-processerna och studerar tiden det tar att slutföra en uppkoppling med ingen, en eller två tal-kanaler redan uppkopplade. Vi har funnit att tiden det tar är i bästa fall lång, om det finns tal-kanaler uppkopplade är tidsåtgången oacceptabel. Genom optimering av en del variabler och time-outs har vi lyckats reducera uppkopplingstiden, speciellt i fallet med tal-kanaler redan uppkopplade. Våra föreslagna ändringar är endast i mjukvaran, inga hårdvaruändringar är nödvändiga. Efter att uppkopplingen är slutförd kommer användaren att vilja börja använda de tjänster som erbjuds. Detta är en annan del av uppsatsen. Bluetooth-tekniken tillhandahåller inte något sätt att tillgodogöra sig tjänster, bara att upptäcka dem. Därför behövs det protokoll för att lösa detta. Vi har undersökt en del av de så kallade "service discovery"-protokoll som finns tillgängliga idag

This study aims to discuss the generative possibilities of reading architectural form by focusing on selected interpretations of the Venice Hospital project by Le Corbusier. By presenting complementary and competing readings of the project, it examines different design strategies in the formal organization of the Venice Hospital. It shows that the Venice Hospital project, displaying the characteristics of both a &ldquo
field&rdquo
organization and a well-articulated object, demands a reconsideration of the occasionally overstated distinction between them. First, it introduces interpretations of the Venice Hospital as a field and/or mat-building phenomenon, which emphasize its relevance as a precedent for contemporary formal explorations. introduced by Klaus-Peter Gast. The Venice Hospital project is also studied as an example of transparent spatial organization, in light of the conceptual framework developed by Colin Rowe and Robert Slutzky in their &ldquo
Transparency&rdquo
articles. Starting from these interpretations of the Venice Hospital project, this study aims at bringing into discussion the nature of the devices or techniques of formal organization that can mediate between architecture and urbanism. These devices are examined in light of the framework constituted by the concepts of &ldquo

Au croisement de l’histoire de l’administration de la justice en situation coloniale et de l’histoire des savoirs, cette thèse analyse des inspections itinérantes sous forme de procès, déployées auprès des communautés d’habitants de la province de Popayán (sud-ouest de la Colombie actuelle), entre le milieu du XVIe et le début du XVIIe siècle. L’étude vise à restituer les contextes et les acteurs de ces inspections appelées "visitas de la tierra", les modalités concrètes des déplacements et les rencontres occasionnées par la procédure, ainsi que son dispositif de production d’information, par observation et collecte de témoignages enregistrés in situ. D’autre part, la recherche questionne les usages judiciaires et savants de la documentation produite lors des "visitas de la tierra", au sein des collectivités soumises à leurs enquêtes (villes et paroisses coloniales, sites d’extraction d’or, communautés indiennes d’encomienda), comme dans les centres gouvernementaux de l’empire, auxquels sont envoyées des formes variées de comptes-rendus des inspections. Il s’agit de comprendre la manière dont ces procès agissent à la fois comme des rituels de négociation de l’ordre colonial à l’échelle des corps politiques espagnols et indiens de la province, mais aussi comme des instruments de connaissance de leurs territoires, dont les usages s’exercent à différents niveaux du gouvernement impérial
This PhD dissertation participates in historiographical trends that have been underway for several decades at the crossroads of imperial and colonial European expansion in the early modern period, the history of justice, and the history of knowledge production. It analyses inspections of royal justice and taxation-system in the form of itinerant trials, carried out among the communities of inhabitants in the province of Popayán (southwestern Colombia), between the years 1550s and 1630s. The study aims to reconstruct the contexts and actors involved in these procedures, called "visitas de la tierra", the concrete modalities of travel and social encounters they occasioned, and their practices of information-gathering, by observing and collecting testimonies.On the other hand, it questions the multiple uses of the visitas’ oral and written enactments, within the communities subjected to the trials (colonial towns and parishes, gold-mining districts, Indian encomiendas), as well as in the empire's governmental centers, to which various forms of reports were sent.The aim of the research is to understand better how the "visitas de la tierra" acted both as rituals of negotiation of the colonial order at the local scale of the political bodies established in the northern Andes, and as instruments of knowledge about their territories, the uses of which were exercised at different levels of imperial government

The objective of this research is to present a collaborative inquiry based learning activity in physics laboratory which students can perform activity as pre-class, in-class and after-class environment, and aim to assist students in the procedures of experimental design, data collection, data analysis and discussion and to promote the interactive and participation by using probing device. These activities are designed to provide a collaborative inquiry learning environment for students, and to reduce the burden of preparation for the teachers Before classroom, a key characteristic of this activity is the creation of a feedback loop between the classroom and the Web using Internet “Warm Up” assignments that are due prior to class time. By examining student responses to Warm Up exercises before class, faculty members can determine the level of understanding, prior knowledge, and misconceptions that students bring to class. Classroom time can then be spent addressing these misconceptions while discussing course content. In the classroom setting, it adopts collaborative inquiry digital environment to enhance students’ interaction within a group by the handheld devices. And in this activity we provide a mechanism in PDA which show-and-tell students’ concept. For these purpose, the pre-class web site by using JiTT. And in-class activity with the mechanism of concept monitoring are designed and implemented. The system assists students in achieving pre-class collaborative learning. The teacher can get the feedback from students’ pre-class mission through web site. And in class, it helps students face-to-face interact and collaboratively achieve group mission through wireless network. According to evaluations of this study, the pre-class web site with concept monitoring and in-class activity with Miguel’s method is helpful to enhance students’ interaction and learning. Furthermore, the system aids students in achieving the sequential assignment efficiently. Finally, future improvement suggestions are proposed.

Can reenactments be a way to create counter-narratives in and for the museum? Through the analysis of political performance (or what the artist Tania Bruguera calls ‘political-timing-specific’ artworks), this essay discusses the potential of reenactment as both a practice of materializing memories and narratives of oppression and of rethinking museum policies in terms of preservation and display. Its main argument is that, while the archive can be regarded as a form of materializing the memory of these works, reenactment is more than a way of recovering the past; it is also a device for reconstructing memories of activism and oppression. This essay further suggests that reenactments of political-timing-specific works demand a change in accessioning, conservation, and presentation practices, which might be inclined to erase decentralized art-historical and material narratives.

AbstractProjects have become crucial devices in the practice and governance of research. Drawing on the participant ethnography of a two-year interdisciplinary project on microbial bioenergy, this chapter inquires how projectification translates into collective research dynamics. It argues that to understand what projects are and how they affect research practices and communities, it is necessary to look beyond their influence on the organisation of research work. Seeking to delineate the project as a group, the chapter analyses three versions of the project-ed community: in documents, in institutional arrangements, and in daily research. This shows that projects cannot be reduced to temporary arenas of research. They are also argumentative devices that justify and display the excellence and relevance of specific scientific endeavours, as well as projection devices – they serve to imagine future research communities and to start building them. In that, projects are highly strategic entities that integrate scientific practices into coherent narratives to further the interests and ambitions of various parties; but they are also enmeshed in practical matters, because to build communities, researchers have to develop concrete repertoires that are materially embodied.

AbstractThis chapter accomplishes a phenomenology of deep time visualizations. It examines the power and limits of a series of visual devices used in paleontology and geology to access, and eventually work with the earth’s deep past. First, I discuss how paleontologists visualize and sort data in the field; second, I examine the practices used to illustrate and validate knowledge about extinct animals; third, I explore what function visualizations play in supporting the transition between data collection and the possible explanation of global biological phenomena such as the estimation of diversity through geological time; fourth, I inquire into the role of the computer; and fifth, I discuss the recent intersection between paleontology and different kinds of new technologies such as augmented and visual reality and robotics, both to shed light on some aspects of the past and to generate new research questions. In conclusion, I reflect on the intersection between earth science visual cultures and knowledge production. In particular, I point out the function of knowledge circulation and in between scientists in the production of visual devices as well as the importance of aesthetics for cooperative research projects and knowledge production in the earth sciences.

Abstract Widespread adoption and significant developments in Focused Ion Beam technology has made FIB/SEM instrumentation a commonplace sample preparation tool. Fundamental limitations inherent to Ga ion species complicate usage of Ga+ FIB instruments for the modification of semiconductor devices on advanced technology nodes. Said limitations are fueling interest in exploring alternative primary species and ion beam technologies for circuit edit applications. Exploratory tests of etching typical semiconductor materials with Xe ion beams generated from two plasma ion sources confirmed advantages of Xe+ as a potential ion species for gas-assisted etching of semiconductor materials, but also revealed potential complications including, swelling of metal and Xe+ retention within the material arising from excessive Xe ion beam current density.

Laparoscopic surgery offers multiple clinical advantages over open surgical procedures. The rise in adoption of laparoscopic surgery brings with it unique human factors challenges for surgeons and device developers. The design of laparoscopic surgical tools requires specialized human factors analysis and ergonomic considerations to overcome these challenges. Often, this necessary ergonomic design refinement is a secondary effort after proof-of-concept engineering prototypes demonstrate technological feasibility. In this paper, the evaluation and redesign of an engineering proof-of-concept multimodal hand tool, is presented. The baseline design, a three-in-one laparoscopic hand tool for liver resection, merged three distinct devices into one integrated solution for dissection, vessel sealing, and tissue cautery. The work described herein evolves the initial prototype using a multifaceted human factors analysis and design process. This included the use of operating room and laboratory contextual inquiry, simulated use studies, anthropometric underlays, an iterative design process, and expert reviews. The revised design reduced ulnar deviation based on directed hand position via design, provided dual grip options, added over-molded interaction points, incorporated end-effector rotation, and implemented a new handle and controls layout based on anthropometric underlays. The outcome reinforces the notion that human factors and industrial design principles are required elements of a successful user centered design process.

In order to investigate the bidirectional characteristic of a multiple friction pendulum system (MFPS) with multiple sliding surfaces, a series of component tests were performed by using the shaking table in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, Taipei, Taiwan. The multiple friction pendulum system with multiple sliding surfaces consists of double concave surfaces, more than one intermediate sliding plates and one articulated slider located between the concave surfaces and intermediate sliding plates. These devices can continuously change their horizontal stiffness, damping, and displacement capacities during ground shaking by virtue of the properties such as radii and friction coefficients of multiple sliding surfaces. In this study, both uni- and bidirectional component tests of a multiple friction pendulum system with three and four sliding surfaces were carried out to investigate its mechanical characteristic. Furthermore, results obtained from the shaking table tests of an isolated steel structure demonstrate that the MFPS isolation system with multiple sliding surfaces could properly change its stiffness and damping effect, and effectively reduce the excitation force during ground shaking.
