This study expands Carroll’s CSR typology with the public health and safety dimension to examine how the airline industry’s CSR and public health and safety activities influence flight attendants’ organizational identification, self-esteem, and commitment to the company during COVID-19. A total of 342 South Korean flight attendants participated in online surveys. Based on social identity theory and using structural equation modeling (SEM), the study reveals that ethical-, economic-, and philanthropic-CSR and public health and safety are positively related to organizational identification and that all are linked to the self-esteem and organizational commitment of flight attendants. However, legal-CSR did not affect their organizational identification. The results suggest that “public health and safety” should be applied when initiatives aim to enhance flight attendants’ organizational behavior. The study’s findings contribute to the literature by extending the original CSR model and providing theoretical and practical implications for academic researchers and airlines during a pandemic.

The City of Palo Alto, California, located in the mid-Peninsula area south of San Francisco, has taken a unique approach to the problem of retrofitting existing seismically vulnerable buildings. Specifically, Palo Alto has adopted a Seismic Hazard Identification Program which mandates the preparation and filing of seismic engineering reports and relies on the creation of incentives for voluntary retrofitting. The findings of this article are based upon an extensive set of personal interviews conducted in September, 1988, as well as an examination of city ordinances, staff reports, council minutes and other relevant documents. The article first describes the history of seismic policy in Palo Alto leading to the adoption of the seismic identification program. It then goes on to describe in detail the specifics of the Palo Alto program; its key provisions and requirements. Finally, an extensive discussion is provided of the factors which influenced the adoption of the program, and its final form and content.

Access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is the key to sustain life and promote good health. It is an essential component of our survival. Healthy and nutritious food leads to a healthy workforce and hence, improving the economy of any country. Unsafe food creates a vicious circle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, elderly and sick. The food borne diseases impede socioeconomic development of any country by increasing expenditure on health system and affecting national economies, tourism and trade. Food borne illnesses are usually caused by infectious organisms like bacteria, viruses, protozoa and toxins in chemicals which contaminate food, water and soil in which food is grown. These pathogens lead to diarrhoea and other deadly diseases like meningitis. In India, majority of the outbreaks of food borne disease are unreported, unrecognized or un-investigated and may only be noticed after major health or economic damage has occurred. In such a condition controlling the outbreaks, detection and removal of foods leading to the problem, identification of the factors that contribute to the contamination, growth, survival and dissemination of the suspected agent, prevention of future outbreaks and strengthening of food safety policies and programmes is not possible.

An analysis of scientific works defining methodologies, methods and models of managing development projects and the functioning of security systems concerning separate branches and territories, as well as approaches to the implementation of hybrid projects of public security systems has been performed. It has been established that there is a need to conduct research on the development of scientific and methodological identification of hybrid projects of public security systems and their management processes. Nine identifying features of hybrid public safety projects are outlined. The proposed characteristics identifying hybrid projects of public security systems are based on their initiation and implementation of management processes. The hierarchical model of the structure of hybrid projects of public security systems is substantiated. It provides for the consideration of hybrid projects of public security systems at three levels which outline the purposeful and continuously managed interaction between individual processes and their elements. It is substantiated that the purposefulness and manageability properties of hybrid projects of public safety systems significantly affect the indicators of their value and underlie the development of tools for determining the value of these projects. Further research requires the development of tools to determine the value of hybrid projects of public safety systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the literature by assessing factors that typically engender adverse drug reactions (ADRs) jeopardizing medical safety. These factors are population knowledge, clarity in disclosure of the risks inhering ADRs and ADRs incidence. It seeks to minimize negative effect by early identification of drug reactions. Design/methodology/approach On the one hand, the study employs a model that shows relationships between various factors, and on the other hand, ADRs medical safety in the public healthcare sector. Findings Clarity of consultancy services in public healthcare significantly impact ADR medical safety. Population and healthcare provider education on ADRs medical safety are necessities. Implementation of an ADR reporting system in every healthcare institute is essential. This helps service providers to give a clear and accurate information to patients. It also makes patients more aware of consequences of ADRs. Research limitations/implications Time, place and sampling method are found to be the main study limitations. Researchers should take into their consideration the significant relationships between the factors and ADRs medical safety to improve level of awareness in the healthcare public sector. Practical implications Ways to improve ADR medical safety in healthcare sector are underscored. Healthcare service providers and professionals need to take into account the stipulated study factors in order to improve medical safety and reduce unnecessary medical costs. Originality/value Very few studies have been conducted on this topic; most of those that have been conducted were undertaken in western countries. This study assesses the level of healthcare safety in the country and suggests mechanisms to elevate that level.

Inefficiency in maintaining and managing architectural heritage threatens both heritage conservation and public safety. Damage related to collapsed building elements requires an investigation into the factors which cause these phenomena in order to prevent them and to mitigate their effects. This paper aims to define a methodological approach for assessing the risk to humans of falling bodies from historic buildings’ façades. The method is based on the identification of a group of parameters to assess façade’s hazards, vulnerability and public exposure. The results provide the identification of risk factors and related affecting parameters, proposing a synthetic indicator to quantify the risk. The proposal is original in the field of both maintenance planning and preventive maintenance, intending to preserve architectural heritage and public safety. The results lead to an easy tool, as a map, to prioritise risk mitigation interventions. Such a tool, if integrated into maintenance tenders, allows the evaluation, in the context of condition-based maintenance, of the need for interventions.

There is an increased use of public e-services integrating citizens into public administration through electronic interfaces. The relation among parents and public schools is a daily and important relation that has to be trustworthy. On-line interaction among public organizations and citizens can be seen as e-government, indeed embedded into daily practices. A safe entry into such systems is essential for security and trust in the e-governmental systems and schools as well as public services in general. This paper addresses how electronic identification has been used for access to public e-services in schools in a Swedish municipality. The aim of the paper is to present a case study on how electronic identification is used and implemented in ICT platforms in schools. The analysis focuses on information security, organization and potential development of the platforms. The main finding in the case study is that there was an un-organized presentation of information in the system; both general and personal information had to be accessed with the same level of security (identification systems). The organization of identification and access to public e-services seemed highly dependent of the organizational structure of the public schools. The more general implication is that safe and well organized identification systems that are considered as trustworthy and useful among citizens are essential for increased use of the services and legitimate public e-services in general.

Specific Aims: The objective of this study is to evaluate consumers’ knowledge about over the counter (OTC) products containing acetaminophen (APAP). Methods: Doctor of pharmacy student researchers set up a booth at consenting community pharmacies and invited consumers to participate in a 10-15 minute knowledge assessment. The booth contained a table displaying several OTC medication bottles/packages. Adult participants: a) answered baseline questions verbally about their APAP knowledge and associated risks; b) identified OTC products at the booth that contain APAP; and c) calculated and demonstrated dosing of APAP. The researchers asked follow-up questions and assessed the accuracy of the dosing. Participants received APAP educational brochures upon completion. Main Results: Eighty percent of subjects reported not knowing what the abbreviation “APAP” means, and almost half of those who said that they knew what it means were incorrect. Very few participants were able to correctly identify the products containing APAP even with the product packaging information, with the percentage of incorrect responses as to whether a product contains APAP or not varying from 4.9% to 31.6%. More than 40% of the pediatric doses were incorrectly dosed for both of the pediatric formulations, even with the majority of subjects being parents. Conclusions: Consumers are not able to identify which over-the-counter products contain APAP even with the product packaging before them, and they do not know what the abbreviation “APAP” means. Better packaging and product ingredient information should be developed, and the abbreviation “APAP” should be avoided. Pediatric APAP products should be re-evaluated regarding safety and dosing.

La garde à vue est toujours un sujet d'actualité aussi, l'évoquer selon l'angle des garanties, permet d'exorciser ce que la notion par elle-même renferme d'obscurité et d'incertitude. Leur identification au travers du cadre juridique, puis envisagées relativement aux droits de la personne, a mis en relief les points communs mais plus encore, la différence entre les législations française et jordanienne. Pour la première, la caractéristique principale tient à son évolution, sous la pression des instances européennes, vers un procès plus équitable, les droits de la personne s'affermissant. La seconde, pèche par des règlementations insuffisantes, dominées par l'intérêt général et la manifestation de la vérité, au détriment des droits de la personne. Une protection efficace des garanties, pendant la mesure privative de liberté avant jugement, passe par l'examen de leur contrôle par des moyens humains et techniques, toujours en droit comparé. Deux mots résument les effets de ce contrôle, pour les deux droits, ils sont instables et théoriques. L'équilibre à trouver, entre les nécessités de l'enquête pour confondre les auteurs de l'infraction et la protection de la personne gardée à vue, s'avère complexe et fluctuant, quelquefois en fonction d'un contexte d'insécurité. Le droit français sans offrir la panacée absolue d'une législation importante sur la garde à vue devrait permettre de guider la réflexion jordanienne, à partir de ses réussites, mais aussi de ses manques vers une formalisation plus importante dans son Code de procédure pénale, et le souci d'une adaptation conforme à ses valeurs culturelles
Arrest is always a topical subject, so, to evoke it from the point view of public safety, makes it possible to eliminate the associated notions of darkness and uncertainty. Re-examining arrest through the legal framework and with respect to human rights has highlighted commonalities but, more importantly, differences between French and Jordanian legislation. For the former, the main characteristic is its evolution, under the pressure of European authorities, towards a fairer trial, with the rights of the individual being strengthened. The latter is characterised by insufficient regulation, dominated by the general interest and the manifestation of truth, to the detriment of human rights. Effective protection of public safety, during the deprivation of liberty before trial, requires the verification by human and technical means, always in comparative law. Two words summarize the effects of this control, in these two rights, they are unstable and theoretical. The balance to be found between, on the one hand, the needs of the investigation to confound the perpetrators of the offence and, on the other hand, the protection of the person in custody, is complex and fluctuating, sometimes depending on the context of insecurity. French law, without offering the absolute panacea of an important legislation on police custody, should help guide Jordanian reflection, based on its successes but also its shortcomings, towards becoming more formalized in its Code of Criminal Procedure, in the desire for an adaptation in conformity with its cultural values

In the UK 27 million working days are lost due to work-related illness or injury; at an estimate of £13.4 billion to the economy. Over the last 30 years researchers have examined safety culture and its relationship to poor safety performance. An organisation in the high hazard construction industry wanted to understand the factors that shaped and influenced safety performance and safety culture. This thesis details a research project which addresses that aim. A multi-method, triangulated approach was adopted combining both qualitative (focus groups and interviews) and quantitative (safety climate questionnaire) methods. The results of the qualitative studies informed the development of the safety climate questionnaire that included a measure of self-reported accidents and near misses. The qualitative studies identified 6 main themes; Communication, Leadership, Employee Engagement & Involvement, Safety Prioritisation, Job Demands and Culture. Quantitative study results show, Upward Communication, Perceived Organisational Support (POS), Employee Engagement. Leader Member Exchange (LMX) and Organisational Commitment demonstrate a significant relationship with Safety Climate. Safety Climate, POS had a Significant, positive, predictive relationship with both accidents and near misses reported. Upward communication had a significant negative, predictive relationship with accidents and near misses. LMX and Organisational Commitment show a Significant, negative, predictive relationship with accidents reported only. Results can be explained in the context of social exchange relationships. Reporting behaviour is being measured, this can be conceptualised as organisational safety citizenship behaviour. The probability of increasing or reducing reporting behaviours is shaped by social exchanges such as; a) the degree that employees feel supported by the organisation, b) and their manager, c) the safety climate, d) their commitment levels e) and opportunities to raise safety concerns. Interventions should aim to develop leaders and organisational practices to be more supportive, to increase reporting behaviour and to create a more accurate picture of safety performance.

AbstractBiometric facial recognition is one of the most rapidly developing methods of biometric identification, with expanding applications across law enforcement, government and the private sector. Its capacity for integration with other technologies, such as closed circuit television (CCTV) and social media, differentiate it from DNA and fingerprint biometric identification. This chapter commences with a discussion of the technique of facial recognition and applications in identity verification, public surveillance, and the identification of unknown suspects. Its relative advantages and disadvantages, and the development of facial recognition around the world is explored. The discussion then examines how facial recognition databases developed from existing databases, such as driver’s licence photographs, can be integrated with CCTV systems, and most recently, with photographs from social media and the internet. The chapter then considers relevant ethical principles, including privacy, autonomy, security and public safety, and the implications for law and regulation in relation to facial recognition.

The mission of the Office of Hazard Identification and Reduction at the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC, Commission) drives the Division of Human Factors to evaluate corrective action plans and propose redesigns of consumer products. Human factors studies and research focus on consumer product-related injuries, including assessing system design hazards for the general United States consumer population, ranging from newborns to seniors. These assessments include: usability, safety features, choking hazards, and evaluation of potential misuse of a product that could lead to injury or death. This paper will provide an overview of human factors work conducted at the CPSC and discuss how this specialized work contributes to reducing risk to the American public.

Abstract Organizations, both in the private and public sector, need to avoid to the extent practicable, workplace hazards and minimize the associated risks in order to comply with regulations. However, they have also recognized that this is a sound business practice that could result in significant cost savings by avoiding fines and penalties due to non-compliance and enhanced productivity. Consequently, many organizations have instituted safe work practices into their operations and those practices have become a major criterion in evaluating managers’ performance. This new philosophy is now commonly referred to as “Integrated Safety Management.” Per the direction of the Secretary of Energy, all U. S. Department of Energy (“DOE”) facilities across the country have been instructed to implement an Integrated Safety Management System. Different DOE facilities have taken various approaches to the implementation of the system. This paper describes the approach instituted at Sandia National Laboratories and a tool that was developed from lessons learned during that effort. The tool is the cornerstone for implementing an Integrated Safety Management System in a time and cost-effective manner. The tool is now commercially available and can be readily rendered applicable to any type of systematic assessment process.
