The recognition of the United States Supreme Court of “native title” in 1909 has been recognized as a landmark decision for indigenous peoples all over the world. Also called the Cariño doctrine, the ruling honors a Baguio Ibaloy whose ancestral land would eventually be expropriated for the construction of Baguio as an American hill station, later as the Philippines’ unofficial summer capital. Fast-forward to 2014. Descendants of an Ibaloy family reclaim the land on which Casa Vallejo stands. Built in 1909, the building was originally Dormitory 4 for American soldiers. Salvador Vallejo converted it into a hotel in 1923. Persons with fond memories of the hotel claim the refurbished building is a ‘national heritage’ and should not be the subject of ancestral land claims. The year 2014 also saw the largest turnout of Ibaloys in and around Baguio for the celebration on February 23 of Ibaloi Day, at the government-designated Ibaloi Heritage Garden in Burnham Park. Products of colonial and national educational systems, Ibaloy professionals and intellectuals played key roles in the institutionalization and implementation of such activities. Despite their breakthroughs for recognition nationally through certain constitutional provisions, and internationally, are indigenous peoples now trapped in the discourse of nation?

Purpose The Ibaloy is an indigenous ethnic group in the Northern Philippines. Due to modernization, changes in lifestyle, livelihood and spiritual inclination many have forgotten about their culture. Income-generating activities such as handicraft businesses and food security are among their needs and aspirations. With the potential that indigenous entrepreneurship has in improving their cultural and economic status, this study aims to identify which crafts in their material culture can be publicly shared as tourism products and to assess the landscape within which indigenous entrepreneurship can be undertaken. Design/methodology/approach The study utilized a qualitative methodology which involved a combination of participant observation and semi-structured interviews. An interview guide which consisted of open-ended questions that focused on themes such as identification of Ibaloy crafts, the crafts’ various categorization and significance, the challenges and opportunities and their perceptions on what they want done for their crafts and material culture in general was developed for this purpose. The primary respondents were the Ibaloys themselves and other key informants from government and other stakeholders. Findings Other than serving their purpose in an Ibaloy household and as objects used for special occasions, Ibaloy crafts have the potential to be developed as tourism products. While many challenges abound, availability of resources and collaborative support by the government and other institutions can bring opportunities that will lead Ibaloy crafts to become prime tourism products. Social implications The findings point to a compelling need for policymakers and concerned authorities to take immediate action to ensure the culture and heritage of the Ibaloys are protected. Originality/value The study adds to the literature about Filipino indigenous peoples, particularly the Ibaloys of Cordillera, and their aspirations for the inclusion of their material culture to the tourism industry. It can serve as a guide in addressing issues and concerns related to indigenous entrepreneurship that may be addressed through policy intervention and support from stakeholders.

This ethnographic literary critique of an old Ba-diw of the Ibaloy ethnolinguistic group in Southern Benguet, Philippines, was completed by adopting a humanistic lens of a nonfolklorist with the aid of discourse analysis. Serving as a revisit to Philippine folklore, this ambitious yet novelty ethno-critique focused on the language of Ba-diw as a discourse of ethnicity and taking inspiration from the radical views of the National Artist in Literature, Bienvenido Lumbera, the research proceeded by employing the contextualist theory, setting the Ba-diw in its rightful indigenous literary and cultural background and historicity. The critique probed into the distinct ethnolinguistic heritage of the Ibaloy, after which discourse analysis was conducted to examine the grammar of the Ba-diw as both an ethnic and aesthetic expression. This grammar highlighted in the ethnographic critique is the dynamic system of the basic elements of a language consisting of lexis, syntax, semantics, phonology, and cultural load. Recognizing the Ba-diw as an indigenous oral tradition, the researcher examined its language use as an expression of the identity, ideals, aspirations, worldviews, and lifestyle of the Ibaloy ethnolinguistic group being the dominant theme henceforth, a legitimate and unique contribution to the richness of Philippine folklore.

The province of Benguet, situated in North Luzon, the Philippines, holds a large number of ancient mummified remains, mostly located within the municipality of Kabayan. Such bodies are mainly associated to the Ibaloy – one of the indigenous groups collectively known as Igorot – and are stored in natural rockshelters or caves carved into the stone, inside wooden coffins often obtained from hollowed pine tree segments. Recent inspections of some of these corpses, carried out in 2002 and 2012, indicated the nature of their mummification process as well as some details regarding their bioanthropological features. Although very little information was initially available on these bodies, the authors have gathered significant oral information on funerary rituals and attitudes towards the ancestors via interviews with the local elders, as well as data on the vegetal materials employed and the practice of tattooing. This paper is the first critical evaluation of these mummies and demonstrates the uniqueness and preciousness of this biocultural heritage now in danger.

Abstract The Ibaloy, an indigenous group of the Cordillera Central in the Philippines, perform complex burial rites. Often when someone falls ill, they also exhume human remains, a practice that has not received the attention it deserves in a cosmology where animism and analogism are intertwined. Here, we describe a variant of the késheng ja waray batbat ritual observed in 2017, the timeline of its sequences, and the many objects and acts it involves. This ritual is key to the exchanges that the living make with the dead. In it, pigs act more as ‘connectors’ than as sacrificial offerings, and their flesh, blood, and karashowa (soul) are used and shared. This three-day ritual questions death as the end of life, and sheds light on the extent to which Hertz’s ‘second funeral’ concept is useful in understanding the relationships between the living and the dead. It also illuminates how the dead need continuous help from the living and vice versa. Both groups strive to reach a state of diteng (well-being, healthiness) which can be reached only after the dead themselves experience it, thanks to the efforts of the living who take care of their remains and make offerings to them. Then, luck and prosperity can be expected from the dead. These exchanges appear to be necessary to live a good life, and they must be repeated and maintained at all cost.

Background: Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) are leading to a general increase in atopic diseases worldwide. However, it is still unknown whether DEPs induce systemic B-cell IgE class switching in secondary lymphoid organs or locally in the lungs in inducible bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (iBALT). The aim of this work was to identify the exact site of DEP-mediated B-cell IgE class switching and pro-allergic antibody production. Methods: We immunized BALB/c mice with different OVA doses (0.3 and 30 µg) intranasally in the presence and absence of two types of DEPs, SRM1650B and SRM2786. We used low (30 µg) and high (150 µg) DEP doses. Results: Only a high DEP dose induced IgE production, regardless of the particle type. Local IgE class switching was stimulated upon treatment with both types of particles with both low and high OVA doses. Despite the similar ability of the two standard DEPs to stimulate IgE production, their ability to induce iBALT formation and growth was markedly different upon co-administration with low OVA doses. Conclusions: DEP-induced local IgE class switching takes place in preexisting iBALTs independent of de novo iBALT formation, at least in the case of SRM1650B co-administered with low OVA doses.

The Palaearctic Pollenia haeretica species-group is revised. Two species make up the group: Pollenia haeretica Séguy, 1928 (Algeria, Tunisia, Italy) and Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930 (Morocco). Pollenia rungsi Séguy, 1953 is established as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov. Pollenia funebris Villeneuve, 1933 is treated as a junior synonym of Pollenia ibalia Séguy, 1930, syn. nov., but the name is a junior primary homonym of Pollenia funebris Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863, and therefore permanently invalid. A lectotype is designated for Pollenia haeretica Séguy to fix the interpretation of the name. The syntypes of Pollenia funebris Villeneuve are probably lost.

Abstract Inducible bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (iBALT) is an ectopic lymphoid tissue formed in the lung after pulmonary infection or inflammation. This local lymphoid tissue is structurally similar to conventional secondary lymphoid organs (SLOs), with separated B and T cell areas, specialized stromal cells and lymphoid dendritic cells (DCs). The presence of iBALT is typically associated with pulmonary pathology and advanced lung disease, particularly in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), rheumatoid lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis and chronic infections, suggesting that iBALT functions to exacerbate local immune responses and pathology. Here, we tested whether the presence of iBALT affected the pulmonary immune responses to allergens. We induced iBALT formation in neonatal mice by pulmonary administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and when the mice were adults, sensitized and challenged them intranasally with ovalbumin (OVA). We found that mice with iBALT exhibited reduced Th2 responses, reduced eosinophil recruitment, reduced goblet cell hyperplasia and reduced mucus production. The presence of iBALT delayed the accumulation of Th2 cells and eosinophils in the lung following challenge and altered the spatial distribution of T cells in the lung. We also found that the more organized iBALT structure was, the fewer eosinophil infiltrates were observed in house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic inflammation. Although Th2 cells are generated in mice with iBALT, they are concentrated in iBALT area and more dilute in lung parenchyma. Overall, our studies expanded the field of iBALT from observation of what happens in pulmonary diseases to determining the machinery involved in the responses.

Surprisingly, using IL-4 reporter and by transferring OVA-specific OT-II cells, we found that the presence of iBALT did not reduce the number of Th2 cells that accumulated in the lung. Despite similar numbers of Th2 effectors in the lungs of mice with and without iBALT, we found that Th2 cells were differentially distributed in these two groups of mice. Those in the lungs of mice without iBALT were more widely dispersed, whereas the cells in the lungs of mice with iBALT were predominantly concentrated in the lymphoid tissue. These results suggest that the reduction in Th2-driven pathology with iBALT is due to the redistribution of leukocytes within the lung after iBALT formation.

Au Sénégal, l’essentiel de la population musulmane est affilié au soufisme. Quatre principales confréries soufi, dont la tajaniyya, la mouridiyya, la qadiriyya et la layiniyya, organisent la vie islamique et définissent, en partie, l’identité du musulman sénégalais. Mais, depuis la fin des années 1970, des sénégalais revendiquent d’autres façons d’être musulman hors du soufisme et de ces confréries tout en restant sunnites (il existe une petite minorité de chiites). Ils se constituent en associations et mouvements islamiques très dynamiques. Leur rigorisme les mène à catégoriser les croyances et pratiques d’islam au Sénégal en orthodoxes (les leurs) et hétérodoxes (celles des soufi). Ainsi, ils se coupent de toute filiation confrérique soufi, critiquent des croyances et pratiques soufi et affichent leur différence par des codes vestimentaires, des pratiques islamiques, des comportements sociaux, etc. Ces logiques religieuses et identitaires les font appeler d’abord « arabisants » (par opposition aux sortants de l’école français, européenne) puis « ibadou », en référence au nom choisi, pour leurs membres, par les fondateurs de l’association Jama’atou Ibadou Rahmane (JIR).Dans cette thèse, nous avons essayé de montrer en quoi les « ibadou du Sénégal » nous renseignent sur les croyances et pratiques actuelles d’islam puis en quoi ils rendent compte des crises de l’islam dans ce contexte de globalisation marqué, depuis le 11 septembre 2001, par la médiatisation de l’islamisme radical et du terrorisme
This doctoral dissertation investigates, and aims at highlighting, the ways in which the «ibadou of Senegal» account for the current Islamic practices and beliefs in Senegal and how they cope with the predicaments of Islam in the context of a globalizing world, mainstreamed ideas of radical Islam and terrorism, of which 11th of September 2001 has been a historical landmark. In Senegal, the majority of the Muslim population is affiliated to Sufism. Four main Sufi groups, namely the tajaniyya, the mouridiyya, the qadirriya and the layiniyya, organize the Islamic life and define the identity of the Muslim population in the country. However, since the late 1970s, some Senegalese people pursued other ways of practicing their religion, outside of Sufism while remaining Sunnis (with a minority of Chia Muslims). They organize themselves in communities with highly dynamic Islamic movements. Their religious rigorism mas made them categorize their Islamic faith and practices as Orthodox, and that of others as Heterodox (The Sufi Muslims). Furthermore, with an outright different dress code, they segregate themselves from the Sufi group by criticizing their beliefs and practices and promoting Islamic practices and social conduct of their own. They were, first, called “Arabist” by training and by their very religious and identity logics, (in opposition to those affiliated with the French schooling system) then now are known as « ibadou », in reference to Jama’atou Ibadou Rahmane, a name chosen for the members, but by the founders, of the Association

The tribal life and the oral traditions of black South Africans have been marginalized. The consequence of the western civilization and the apartheid regime forced people to do away from their traditional heritage and culture; they adopted the western way of life. They buried their oral tradition and only a little has survived. To save the dying culture of the art of the oral tradition we need to go out and record and document the surviving oral tradition as soon as possible. Since the art of the oral tradition is an art form conducted by an artist, it may be possible to tell the ibali likaNongqawuse by means of visual imagery. Visual images can be read and be understood easily by the public because visual forms, sings, images can make up a language for both the literate as well as the illiterate.

This study addressed the potential restoration of a population of mud crabs Scylla spp. in the mangroves of Naisud and Bugtong Bato, Ibajay, Aklan, Philippines. Survey of the study site showed that 50 of the 70 ha total mangrove area is still natural mangrove and represents suitable habitat for mud crabs. The dominance of Scylla olivacea in the mud crab catches, through all life stages, suggests fidelity of this species to the area. The absence of berried crabs in the samples may indicate offshore migration for spawning. The high percentage of immature crabs in all months with peaks in March or April may suggest year-round recruitment with peaks in the summer months. The negatively significant correlation of carapace width (CW) and body weight (BW) to time indicates growth overfishing. Results further revealed low yield and catch per unit effort (CPUE). Population estimates ranging from 14 to 34 crabs ha 1 were obtained through a mark-recapture study using coded microwire tag (CWT) and the Jolly-Seber method for open populations. Growth rates were 0.25 mm CW d"' and 1g BW d"1. Results of the stock enhancement trials showed that smallscale release can increase abundance of mud crabs in a partly isolated mangrove habitat. Growth and survival rates of released crabs suggest that S. olivacea is the best suited species for this particular area. The results further revealed that pondconditioned S. olivacea can have higher growth than those released directly from the hatchery and recovery rates equivalent to those of their wild conspecifics. The optimum size-at-release is 65.0-69.9 mm CW regardless of species or source. Both wild and hatchery-reared crabs also exhibited limited post-release movement, supporting the overall conclusion that stock enhancement can be an effective tool in addressing declining fisheries resources.

Influenza A virus (IAV) infection is a serious respiratory disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Annual vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection and its potentially severe complications; however, the vaccines currently offered have several drawbacks that limit its availability and protective efficacy. Influenza virus-like particles (VLPs), which lack viral genetic material and are non-infectious, represent a promising vaccine candidate. Previous reports have shown VLPs are more immunogenic than subunit or recombinant proteins, and confer protection upon lethal challenge. A critical component of this protection is mediated by influenza HA-specific neutralizing Abs produced by memory B cells and plasma cells, the cellular products of the germinal center (GC) reaction. While preliminary studies have examined the humoral immune response to VLP vaccination, the current study is the first to characterize the GC response in secondary and tertiary lymphoid tissues. Mice were vaccinated with influenza VLPs using three immunization routes: subcutaneous (s.c.), intramuscular (i.m.), and intranasal (i.n.) and the GC response was assessed over time. Robust GC reactions were induced in the dLNs regardless of vaccination route, though the largest response was generated with VLPs s.c. The pattern of isotype expression was remarkably similar between routes, with IgM+ and IgG2+ B cells representing the majority of the GC B cell population. Mucosal immune responses in the upper (nasal) and lower (lung) airway were measured in mice vaccinated i.n. Marked GC reactions were induced in the nasal-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT), while the pulmonary response was relatively modest and short-lived compared to infection with IAV. Within the GC B cell population, IgM+ and IgG2+ B cells made up the majority, similar to the dLN response. Importantly, the pattern of isotype expression induced by VLPs mimicked the response induced by natural IAV infection, and suggests that VLPs contain the necessary innate immune agonists to induce a TH1 biased response.

Introduction: les follicules lymphoïdes (FL) sont absents du poumon normal mais ont été décrits dans les poumons de patients atteints de mucoviscidose ou de dilatations de bronches non mucoviscidosiques, suggérant un rôle pour l’infection bronchique dans la néogenèse lymphoïde (NL). Nous avons étudié la dynamique de la néogenèse lymphoïde dans l’infection bactérienne. Méthodes: les souris C57BL/6 ont reçu une instillation intratrachéale de billes d’agarose contenant du PAO1 ou du S. aureus (106 CFU/animal) permettant une infection prolongée et ont été comparées à des souris contrôles (billes stériles ou absence de billes). Les souris ont été sacrifiées à J1, J4, J7 et J14. Résultats: l’instillation unique de billes d’agarose contenant du PAO1 ou du S. aureus induit en 14 jours des FL fonctionnels situés sous l’épithélium en regard des zones d’infection. Le marquage pour CXCL12 et CXCL13 est faible chez contrôles, mais présent dans l’épithélium (CXCL13) dès J1 et présent également dans les FL (CXCL12 et CXCL13) à J14 chez les souris infectées. Le traitement des souris par un anticorps anti CXCL12 ou anti CXCL13 n’inhibe pas la formation des FL induite par l’infection à PAO1. Conclusion: nos données suggèrent un rôle pour l’infection bactérienne prolongée et l’épithélium respiratoire dans la NL des bronchopathies chroniques. Notre modèle permet d’évaluer les mécanismes de la formation et de persistance des FL dans le poumon
Introduction: lymphoid follicles (LF) are absent in normal lungs, but are described in lungs of subjects with cystic fibrosis (CF) or non-CF bronchiectasis, suggesting a role for bacterial infection in lymphoid neogenesis. We aimed to study the dynamic of pulmonary lymphoid neogenesis (LN) during bacterial infection. Methods: C57BL/6 mice were instilled intratracheally with PAO1- or S. aureus-coated (1.106 CFU/mouse) agarose beads (which produced prolonged airway infection) and compared to controls (sterile beads or no instillation). Mice were sacrificed on day (d)1, d4, d7, and d14 after instillation. Results: chronic pulmonary infection with PAO1 or S. aureus induced organised LF in 14 days after a single challenge with PAO1- or S. aureus-coated beads. Bacteria- induced LF were exclusively localized in the subepithelium of infected airways. Staining for CXCL12 and CXCL13 was weak in airway epithelium of controls, but was positive in airway epithelium (CXCL13) at 1 day and in LF (both) of infected mice at 14 days. Treatment with anti CXCL12 or anti CXCL13 Ab did not reduce LN induced by PAO1 infection. Conclusions: chronic bacterial infection and respiratory epithelium could contribute to LN in chronic airway diseases. Our unique model allows to study mechanisms for the formation and maintenance of lung LF

L'objectif principal de cette thèse est d'étudier comment la sélection naturelle façonne les traits d'histoire de vie et le comportement des animaux en fonction de l'environnement écologique dans lequel ils évoluent. Ce cadre théorique soulève des hypothèses spécifiques concernant les processus de reproduction, de dispersion et d'approvisionnement chez le parasitoïde Ibalia leucospoides. Les expériences d'écologie comportementale et d'écophysiologie menées sur des parasitoïdes femelles d' Ibalia leucospoides démontrent principalement que (1) la proportion d'oeufs matures que possède la femelle à l'émergence est élevée par rapport à sa fécondité potentielle : I. Leucospoides adopte une stratégie proovigénique ; (2) l'alimentation a un effet négligeable sur les femelles adultes : elle n'influence ni la maturation des oeufs, ni la survie, ni les capacités de vol ; (3) dans nos conditions expérimentales, la capacité de vol dépend des caractéristiques morphologiques du parasitoïde (taille et charge alaire) ; et (4) concernant la recherche d'hôtes, les femelles sont capables de discerner des différences dans la qualité des patchs d'hôtes à distance, sans les échantillonner. D'autre part, le temps d'exploitation d'un patch dépend des informations obtenues des patchs voisins. Le succès reproductif du parasitoïde proovigénique Ibalia leucospoides, n'est pas limité par le manque de nourriture chez l'adulte. La stratégie d'allocation des ressources entre les différentes fonctions biologiques, ainsi que le comportement d'approvisionnement adopté par cette espèce de parasitoïde pourraient vraisemblablement être une réponse aux caractéristiques de l'habitat, telle que la distribution fortement agrégée des Sirex noctilio, l'hôte, ainsi que la disponibilité des ressources (i.e. hôtes et nourriture)
The central aim of this thesis is to explore how natural selection shapes life history traits and behaviuors according to the ecological environment in which an animal exists. This overall framework leads to specific hypotheses concerning the reproductive, dispersal and foraging processes in the parasitoid Ibalia leucospoides. The experiments in behavioural ecology and eco-physiology in female parasitoids of Ibalia leucospoides show as main results, that (1) the proportion of the potential lifetime eggs complement that is mature at female emergence is high; (2) low dependency on adult female feeding, not only for egg maturation but also for survival and flight; (3) under our experimental conditions flight capacity depends on the morphological characteristics of the parasitoid (size and wing loading); and (4) regarding host foraging, females accurately assess differences in host patch quality from a distance without the need of displaying a sampling process; in addition that patch exploitation times depend on the information obtained from the surrounding patches. The reproductive success of I. leucospoides, a proovigenic parasitoid, is not constrained by adult food deprivation. Both the resource allocation strategy toward the different biological functions and the foraging behaviour adopted by this parasitoid species may well be in respond to habitat characteristics, such as a strongly aggregated distribution of Sirex noctilio, the host, as well as to the resources availability (i.e. host and food)

This study aimed present the máster’s dissertation named Canjerê: uma performance cartográfica em patrimônio cultural, educação e africanidades, held in the Postgraduate Program in Education of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). This research is proposed to follow the process of an experience lived by individuals and black cultural practices, which resulted in creation of Instituto Baobá de Cultura e Arte – o Ibaô – in Campinas (SP). The movement of this research reveals an experience as possible against what is hegemonic tax as only true culture, from the practice of Capoeira and other black cultural expressivity. Based on the invisibility of issue of black people, this process offers clues to the construction of aternatives that break the dominant models, weaving reflections on the social hostilities that affect the uniqueness and identity construction centered africanities and as the prospect of knowledge of ecology can contribute to the construction of new existential territories.
Este trabalhado tem por objetivo apresentar a dissertação de mestrado Canjerê: uma performance cartográfica em patrimônio cultural, educação e africanidades, realizada no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação da Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar). Essa investigação se propôs acompanhar o processo de uma experiência vivenciada por sujeitos e práticas culturais negras, que resultaram na criação do Instituto Baobá de Cultura e Arte – o Ibaô – em Campinas (SP). O movimento desta pesquisa revela uma experiência como possibilidade contrária ao que está hegemonicamente imposto como cultura de verdade única, a partir da prática da Capoeira e de outras expressividades culturais negras. Com base na problemática de invisibilização das pessoas negras, este processo apresenta pistas para a construção de alternativas que rompem com os modelos dominantes, tecendo reflexões sobre as hostilidades sociais que afetam a singularidade e a construção identitária centrada nas africanidades e como a perspectiva da ecologia de saberes pode contribuir para a construção de novos territórios existenciais.

The lower respiratory tract is in direct communication with the external environment for gas exchange to occur. Therefore, it is constantly exposed to allergens, antigens, bacteria, viruses, and a wide variety of airborne foreign bodies. Bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT), which develops in response to these exposures and is one of the most prominent representatives of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), is important for generating rapid and specific bronchopulmonary adaptive immune responses. Therefore, this chapter focuses on the lymphoid architecture of BALT, which was first discovered in the bronchial wall of rabbits, its inducible form called inducible BALT (iBALT), its immunological response mechanisms, and its roles in certain pathologies including infectious and autoimmune diseases as well as in allergic and malignant conditions. In conclusion, it is hypothesized that BALT plays an important role in maintaining health and in the development of lower respiratory tract diseases; thanks to the pulmonary immune system in which it functions as a functional lymphoid tissue.
