Анотація:
The paper presents the results of research on the performance of linear electro-hydraulic servomechanisms with stepper motor, evaluated by mathematical modelling and numerical simulation with the AMESIM software package. These servomechanisms have a great potential for application, including for agricultural technical equipment. Servomechanisms of various types are used for the rapid and high precision operation of the various systems. In practice, electro-hydraulic servomechanisms have been required in the case of the systems requiring high forces or moments. These equipment are automatic hydraulic tracking systems and can be analysed with methods specific to automatic systems. The paper contains a structural description of an electro-mechanical servomechanism with stepper motor, its operation, mathematical model and its performances obtained by numerical simulation. The mathematical modelling of the electro-hydraulic servomechanism is based on the relations between the input sizes and output sizes of the equipment in its structure as well as the connection relations between these equipment. Based on the obtained results it is demonstrated that the analysis and synthesis of electro-hydraulic servomechanisms with stepper motor can be determined by numerical simulation using the AMESIM simulation software.

Seepage problems exist in water conservancy projects, groundwater research, and geological research, and hydraulic conductivity is an important factor that affects the seepage field. This study investigates the heterogeneity of hydraulic conductivity. Kriging methods are used to simulate the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity, and the application of resistivity and grain size is used to obtain hydraulic conductivity. The results agree with the experimental pumping test results, which prove that the distribution of hydraulic conductivity can be obtained economically and efficiently and in a complex and wide area.

The efficient design of hydraulic systems requires fast simulation methods. In most simulation programs, the hydraulic components are coupled by compressible joints. Since the compressibility of oil is very small, this leads to stiff differential equations. To avoid these difficulties stiff elastic couplings can be replaced by algebraic and, in some cases, unilateral constraints. Examples for hydraulic components with unilateral behavior are check valves, cylinders with stop limits and fluid volumes, in which cavitation can occur. The resulting complementarity equations can be solved with a standard Lemke algorithm. Compared to conventional methods, this leads to a significant reduction of computational effort.

The paper deals with the principles of hydraulic design of runners of axial turbines or pumps. The procedures of classical methods of hydraulic design of primary runner geometry and the possibilities of subsequent optimization of this geometry by CFD simulation are presented. In the paper, the advantages of the procedure of hydraulic design of the primary runner geometry of a tubular Kaplan turbine with the application of the classical methods and the subsequent CFD simulation are shown on a specific example. The purpose of the CFD simulation is to verify the achievement of the required parameters of the designed runner geometry and its possible fine-tuning and optimization.

This paper reports about the design and modeling process of high performance servo-actuated mechanisms for automatic machines. Besides being a delicate and time consuming process, coupled simulations based on virtual prototyping finally offer the chance to integrate engineering methods proper of control system engineering and mechanical design. In particular, the main target of this work is to investigate how different virtual prototyping approaches, each having increasing level of detail, can contribute to the appropriate prediction of the expected machine performance. These results are then compared with experimental data obtained on a real servomechanism prototype. The comparison quantitatively demonstrate the improvement on torque prediction and position error reduction when detailed models of the controller and the electric motor dynamics are coupled with the mechanical system model.

This paper is made from a certain type of truck crane hydraulic lifting mechanism system as an object, then the second lifting working condition is analyzed. With AMESim, according to the hydraulic system diagram building lifting mechanism hydraulic system simulation model, hereby corresponding simulation conditions is set and the effects of secondary slide response on input signal, hoisting load, discharge and speed of pump, fluid resistance of one-way throttle is studied. This research on truck crane hoisting mechanism hydraulic system provides the theory basis for the design improvement, the relevant research methods and means have reference on the research of other engineering machinery hydraulic system working characteristics.

Abstract Energy efficiency of hydrostatic transmissions, and especially efficiencies of drives with motor speed controlled by throttle, as well as efficiency of hydraulic servomechanisms can in fact be higher than the efficiency values most frequently given by the respective literature in this field. With the progress achieved in recent years in the development of hydraulic systems it is becoming necessary to develop methods for precise energy efficiency calculation of such systems. It is difficult to imagine that more and more, better and better machines and control elements could be used without the possibility of a mathematical tool at our disposal to enable an accurate analysis and assessment of behavior of the system in which such machines and control elements have been applied. The paper discusses energy savings using mathematical model of losses in elements, the energy efficiency of the system. There are possibilities to reduce energy losses in proportional control systems (in the pump, in the throttle control unit, especially in the cylinder), and thus to improve the energy efficiency of the throttling manifold. The considerations allow for comparison of the loss power resulting from the applied hydraulic control structure of the hydraulic cylinder and the power consumed by the pump from the electric motor that drives it, the power necessary to provide pump-driven hydraulic cylinder. The article shows the impact on the output (useful) power consumed in the considered systems, and the impact on the power consumed of the loss power in the individual elements. The paper presents also formulas of loss power, formulas of energy efficiency connected with investigated hydrostatic drives, two schematic diagrams of hydraulic systems, their principle of operation and problems of studying losses in elements and energy efficiency characteristics of systems consisting of a feed assembly, control set and cylinder. It also includes a subject matter connected with an energy loss power of hydrostatic systems with hydraulic cylinder controlled by proportional directional control valve. Diagrams of loss power of two hydraulic systems worked at the same parameters of speed and load of a cylinder, which were different due to structure and ability of energy saving, were presented and compared.

Hydraulic transmission has a wide range of applications and attains rapid development. As the traditional methods of mathematic modeling in the design of the electro-hydraulic control system are very complex, making the design and debugging cycle of the hydraulic system longer. Thus in this paper, using the AMESim which is a senior modeling software facing engineering task design, does the modeling and simulation calculations for one kind of digital hydraulic cylinder. We get its simulation in the application of the actual working condition. At the same time, we optimize the simulation parameters and analyze the simulation results. The simulation results and analysis can provide certain reference value for the design, debugging and subsequent improvement of the digital hydraulic cylinder. According to the simulation results, it can meet different operational requirements by making appropriate compensation and adjustment in practical applications.

Modular modeling methods based on the reasonable simplifying and supposing of hydraulic system of demolishing robots are proposed in this paper, dynamic mathematical model of each hydraulic element of demolishing robots is set up by the dynamic system analysis software package Simulink of Matlab, response characteristic curve is obtained by the simulation, and analysis of the simulation results is operated in this paper. The experimental results explicate that the hydraulic system is stably, real-time, low-cost, and easy to expand; it can meet the applying requirements of demolishing robots, and it provides the theory basis for the project applying of the hydraulic system of demolishing robots.

Computer simulations of the optical servo functions of optical disk drives are developed and compared with experimental results. The focus control servo is investigated first, with emphasis on the astigmatic focus detection method. A paraxial ray trace, enhanced to allow tolerance studies of tilted and decentered surfaces, is used to calculate the size and orientation of an astigmatic blur on a quadrant photodetector as a function of focus error. The resulting irradiance distribution is integrated over the detector elements and processed to yield typical focus servo signals. A method for simulating generalized astigmatic focus systems, independent of a particular design, is also shown. The simulation results are used to derive normalized tolerance curves for detector misalignment and spot motion. Alignment diagnostics based on the servo signals are also presented. A wavefront aberration model is also developed and used to investigate the focus servo's performance in the presence of common aberrations. Simulations based on diffraction theory are used to investigate the radial tracking servo. Both scalar and vector diffraction theories are considered. The scalar theory is found to be adequate in most cases, while offering a large advantage in computational efficiency. A model for computing the signals detected by scanning the microscopic features of the disk is developed using the optical cross transfer function that describes the imaging characteristics of partially coherent systems. This model is used to investigate push-pull and three beam tracking. Aberrations, data patterns, detector misalignment, and pregroove profile are all examined for their effects on the servo signals. Crosstalk between the focus and tracking error detection is also briefly considered, and a possible extension of the radial tracking servo model to investigate this phenomenon is suggested.

The purpose of this study was primarily to promote the wider deployment of the hydraulic ram pump, and secondarily to provide the technical input into a programme aimed at using hydraulic ram pump technologies for third world development. Hitherto hydraulic ram pump technologies have been restricted by poor understanding of operational parameters, poor performance prediction, and poor design of pumps and installations. In pursuit of greater understanding the work utilised a computer simulation developed by the author as part of a previous research programme. This simulation was then greatly enhanced to provide improved accuracy and functionality. The enhanced simulation was then used to provide significant insight into the operation of a hydraulic ram pump and subsequently used to identify design improvements for the hydraulic ram pump. The simulation was used to investigate operational restrictions on the hydraulic ram, and was ultimately use to develop a model of hydraulic ram pump operation. The model of operation developed by the use of the simulation was computerised and used to predict the performance of hydraulic ram pump installations. This computerised model was then used to provide the most comprehensive design charts yet created for hydraulic ram pump, and was also used in the investigation of operational limits for the device. The study represents: the development of the first detailed simulation of the hydraulic ram pump and the most significant insight to date into the detail of operation of a hydraulic ram pump. The result of the study is the provision of an accurate method of pump calibration, an accurate method of pump performance prediction, and the first comprehensive design charts to be produced for the hydraulic ram pump.

Canal hydraulic models can be used to understand the hydraulic behaviour of large and complex irrigation networks at low cost. A number of computational hydraulic models were developed and tested in the early 1970s and late 80s. Most were developed using finite difference schemes and procedural programming languages. In spite of the importance of these models, little progress was made on improving the numerical algorithms behind them. Software development efforts were focused more on developing the user interface rather than the core algorithm. This research develops a database-driven, object-oriented hydraulic simulation model for canal irrigation networks using modern high-resolution shock capturing techniques that are capable of handling variety of flow situations which includes trans-critical flow, shock propagation, flows through gated structures and channel networks. The technology platforms were carefully selected by taking into account a multi-user support and possible migration of the new software to a web-based one which integrates a Java-based object-oriented model with a relational database management system that is used to store network configuration and simulation parameters. The developed software is tested using a benchmark test suite formulated jointly by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Environment Agency (EA). A total of eight tests (seven of them adapted from the DEFRAjEA benchmark suite) were run and results compiled. The developed software has outperformed ISIS, REC-RAS and MIKE 11 in three of the benchmark tests and equally well for the other four. The outcome of this research is therefore a new category in hydraulic simulation software that uses modern shock-capturing methods fully integrated with a configurational relational database that has been fully evaluated and tested.

Resumo: Este trabalho analisa a nível teórico e de simulação as Não-Linearidades presentes na modelagem e controle de robôs. Ao mesmo tempo é apresentado um estudo detalhado sobre sistemas Não-Lineares envolvendo o desenvolvimento de Controladores Não-Lineares para Manipuladores Industriais. As simulações são realizadas a partir do desenvolvimento do modelo dinâmico de manipuladores de até dois graus de liberdade, considerados rígidos, podendo ser futuramente estendidos a outros graus de liberdade e ao caso de manipuladores flexíveis. A partir dos resultados apresentados na simulação, pode-se mostrar vantagens e inconvenientes da utilização desses controladores em relação aos controladores tradicionais
Abstract: This work analyses the theory and simulation of Non-Linearitys found in the equations and robots control with one and two degrees of freedom. Simultaneously it is presented a detailed work on non linear system involving the development of Non Linear Controls for Industrial Manipulators. This process is moré advantageous than the classical linear controls. Extension to other related works including Flexible Manipulators are also Suggested.

Resumo: Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um modelo computacional, baseado no Método da Teoria Linear Modificado (MTLM) proposto por WOOD (1981) e a implementação do algoritmo do Gradiente proposto por TODINI e PILATI (1988). Além disso, apresentam-se comparações entre ambos para a análise de redes de abastecimento de água de grande porte. De acordo com a proposta deste trabalho, para criar um modelo baseado no MTLM tornou-se indispensável a definição prévia de um algoritmo para a seleção automática de circuitos. Para essa finalidade, adotou-se o algoritmo de Breadth First Search (BFS), baseado na teoria dos grafos e utilizado satisfatoriamente na seleção automática dos circuitos nas redes hidráulicas. A formulação adotada na implementação dos modelos estabelece as equações de continuidade nos nós e as equações de conservação de carga nas malhas em termos da vazão para cada elemento do sistema, apresentando um conjunto de equações não lineares que relacionam vazão com perda de carga. Uma vez linearizado o sistema de equações, o uso da biblioteca numérica de programação e otimização (KLU) na resolução de sistemas lineares mostrou-se eficiente para ambos os métodos analisados neste trabalho. A validade e a consistência dos resultados fornecidos pelo modelo proposto foram confirmadas através de sua comparação com o software Epanet 2.0. Os resultados obtidos através de simulações com a finalidade de comparar os resultados obtidos pelo MTLM e pelo método que utiliza o algoritmo do gradiente mostraram a eficiência de processamento e do tempo computacional de ambos os métodos. As comparações foram feitas utilizando redes de até 1000 tubos, fornecendo resultados inéditos, pois os trabalhos encontrados, conforme a revisão bibliográfica, utilizaram redes pequenas com número de tubos em torno de 10% do tamanho das redes estudadas neste trabalho
Abstract: This thesis presents for the first time the development of two computational models, one model is based on the Modified linear theory method (MTLM) that was initially proposed by WOOD in 1981 and the other model is based on the implementation of the Gradient algorithm that was early proposed by TODINI and PILATI in 1987. In addition, this thesis presents comparisons between both methods for the analysis of large pipe networks. In order to develop a model based on the MTLM method was first necessary to define an algorithm for the automatic selection of circuits. For this reason, the algorithm of Breadth First Search (BFS) was used which is based on the theory of graphs. This algorithm was successfully used for the automatic selection of circuits in hydraulic pipe networks. The methods adopted for the implementation of these models used continuity equations in the junctions as well as equations of conservation of energy in the loops in terms of flow for each element of the system that resulted in a set of non-linear equations, relating flow with head lose. Once the systems of equations were linearized, the use of the KLU library for the solution of linear systems showed promising results for both methods investigated in this thesis. The validity and consistency of the results obtained herein by the proposed models were also confirmed through comparisons with results obtained by the software Epanet version 2.0. The results obtained through simulations with the goal to compare with results obtained in this thesis with the MTLM method and the method that uses a gradient algorithm showed satisfactory results with an efficient processing and computational time by both methods. The comparisons were performed with up to 1000 tubes, gathering new and robust data when compared to available literature that used only a small network with a number of tubes of less than 10%

The fast increase in the energy’s price has brought a growing concern about the highly expensive task of transporting water. By creating an hydraulic model of the Water Supply System’s (WSS) network and predicting its behaviour, it is possible to take advantage of the energy’s tariffs, reducing the total cost on pumping activities. This thesis was developed, in association with a technology transfer project called the E-Pumping. It focuses on finding a flexible supervision and control strategy, adaptable to any existent Water Supply System (WSS), as well as forecasting the water demand on a time period chosen by the end user, so that the pumping actions could be planned to an optimum schedule, that minimizes the total operational cost. The OPC protocol, associated to a MySQL database were used to develop a flexible tool of supervision and control, due to their adaptability to function with equipments from various manufacturers, being another integrated modular part of the E-Pumping project. Furthermore, in this thesis, through the study and performance tests of several statistical models based on time series, specifically applied to this problem, a forecasting tool adaptable to any station, and whose model parameters are automatically refreshed at runtime, was developed and added to the project as another module. Both the aforementioned modules were later integrated with an Graphical User Interface (GUI) and installed in a pilot application at the ADDP’s network. The implementation of this software on WSSs across the country will reduce the water supply companies’ running costs, improving their market competition and, ultimately, lowering the water price to the end costumer.
O rápido aumento dos preços da electricidade tem provocado um aumento na preocupação com a tarefa extremamente dispendiosa de transporte de água. Através da criação de modelos hidráulicos de redes de Sistemas de Fornecimento de Água, e da previsão do seu comportamento, é possível tirar vantagem das diferentes tarifas horárias de consumo de energia, reduzindo desta forma os custos totais do bombeamento de água. Esta tese foi desenvolvida em associação com o projecto de transferência de tecnologia denominado E-Pumping. Foca-se na procura de uma estratégia de supervisão e controlo flexível e adaptável a qualquer Sistema de Fornecimento de Água existente, bem como na previsão do consumo de água durante um período escolhido pelo utilizador final, o objectivo final é permitir o planeamento de um horário óptimo que minimize o custo do consumo de energia eléctrica. O Protocolo OPC, associado a uma Base de Dados MySQL, foi usado para o desenvolvimento da ferramenta de supervisão e controlo flexível, constituindo no seu conjunto um módulo do Projecto E-Pumping. A escolha baseou-se em ambas as tecnologias serem adaptáveis a equipamentos de diferentes fabricantes. Esta tese produziu ainda uma ferramenta de previsão do consumo de água, adaptável a qualquer estação, constituindo um segundo módulo do projecto. Esta ferramenta foi obtida através do estudo e testes de performance a variados modelos baseados em séries temporais, especificamente aplicadas a este problema. Os parâmetros do modelo de base desta ferramenta são automaticamente actualizados a cada execução do programa. Ambos os módulos referidos foram integrados com uma Interface Gráfica (GUI) e implementados numa aplicação piloto instalada na rede de abastecimento de água da empresa Águas do Douro e Paiva (ADDP). A implementação deste software em Sistemas de Abastecimento de Água por todo o país reduziria os seus custos de funcionamento, melhorando a sua capacidade de competição no mercado e, em última instância, diminuindo os preços da água para o consumidor final.

Water distribution networks are a fundamental part of any modern city and their daily operations constitute a significant expenditure in terms of energy and maintenance costs. Careful scheduling of pump operations may lead to significant energy savings and prevent wear and tear. By means of computer simulation, an optimal schedule of pumps can be found by an optimisation algorithm. The subject of this thesis is the study of pump scheduling as an optimisation problem. New representations of pump schedules are investigated for restricting the number of potential schedules. Recombination and mutation operators are proposed, in order to use the new representations in evolutionary algorithms. These new representations are empirically compared to traditional representations using different network instances, one of them being a large and complex network from UK. By means of the new representations, the evolutionary algorithm developed during this thesis finds new best-known solutions for both networks. Pump scheduling as the multi-objective problem of minimising energy and maintenance costs in terms of Pareto optimality is also investigated in this thesis. Two alternative surrogate measures of maintenance cost are considered: the minimisation of the number of pump switches and the maximisation of the shortest idle time. A single run of the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm obtains pump schedules with lower electrical cost and lower number of pump switches than those found in the literature. Alternatively, schedules with very long idle times may be found with slightly higher electrical cost. Finally, ant colony optimisation is also adapted to the pump scheduling problem. Both Ant System and Max-Min Ant System are tested. Max-Min Ant System, in particular, outperforms all other algorithms in the large real-world network instance and obtains competitive results in the smallest test network. Computation time is further reduced by parallel simulation of pump schedules.

The thesis is concerning rotator assembly at Indexator. A need to increase production has been seen and it can be done by implementing an optimized assembly process. In addition to the assembly process a new design on workstations and new test equipment is needed.The study resulted into three assembly process proposals. The processes were balanced, layouts were produced and Plant simulation was utilized to produce simulation models. Each proposal were analyzed based on cost, performance, ease of implementation, flexibility and worker condition. This resulted in a stationary assembly process being most promising and a 3D simulation model was produced for visualization and better understanding. The stationary assembly process has a capacity for 90 rotators per day, while reducing the amount of workers by one.The layout of the workstations was done based on the assembly process layout and further developed to make the work cell lean and ergonomic. It resulted in three workstations to perform the assembly. The test bench was developed by creating target specifications, establish a test procedure and decide components for the test bench layout. The finished test bench can measure dynamic torque, count particles to ensure cleanliness and is able to run the test unattended.
Examensarbetet handlar om montering av rotatorer på Indexator. Målet är att ta fram en optimerad monteringsprocess som kan implementeras i Indexators fabrik utan svårigheter. Den nya monteringsprocessen kommer kräva en ny design på arbetsstationerna och nya testbänkar.Fyra koncept på monteringsprocessen togs fram, baserat på monteringens behov och målsättning. Efter utvärdering så modifierades de fyra koncepten till tre förslag på monteringsprocesser. Processerna balancerades, layouter utvecklades och simuleringsmodeller producerades för varje process. Varje förslag analyserades baserat på kostnad, prestanda, implementation,flexibilitet och arbetar-förhållande. Resultatet blev en stationär monteringsprocess och en 3Dsimulering gjordes för visualisering och förståelse. Den stationära monteringsprocessen har en kapacitet på 90 rotatorer per dag och reducerar behovet av montörer.Layouten för monteringsstationerna baseras på processens layout och har modifierats för ergonomiska aspekter. Inom monteringsstationerna så utvecklades layouten för att minimera antalet onödiga rörelser för montören. Testriggens design utvecklades genom att analysera de behov som fanns, skapa en kravspecifikation samt utvärdera och besluta om testprocedur, upplägg för testrigg och dess ingående komponenter. Testriggen uppfyller målsättningen som är att kunna mäta dynamiskt vridmoment, räkna partiklar för att säkerställa renhet i rotatorn och kunna utföra testningen självgående för att frigöra montören under testprogrammet.

AbstractThis chapter deals with the conventional upstream fish passage technologies developed for a safe fish migration at run-of-river hydropower plants (HPPs). It covers the factors influencing successful migration, current status, practices and challenges, novel developments, recommendations and outlook. Main focusses of this chapter are on the attractiveness of fishways and bypass facilities based on FIThydro study results. Although upstream fish passage technologies are well developed, there are still research gaps on their effectiveness related to their attractiveness and passabilities. FIThydro fills such research gaps by providing tools, methods, devices and best practice examples. This chapter covers the field studies at the case study HPP Guma with pool and weir fishway in Spain and Schiffmühle with vertical-slot and nature-like fishways in Switzerland and a combination of field, laboratory and numerical simulation studies of vertical-slot fishway in France. The results of these three studies contribute to better fishway design for a range of fish species and hydraulic conditions.

The paper presents the results of the researches performed in order to find out the static and dynamic performances of some recent types of hybrid electrohydraulic servomechanisms. The new concept was generated by the needs of the modern aerospace technology called “flight by wire”, directed to the use of compact actuators composed mainly by a brushless motor driving a hydrostatic pump connected in a close loop with a hydraulic cylinder. The numerical simulations performed with Simcenter Amesim language pointed out the possibility of saving a lot of energy with this new concept, already used on civil airplanes and fighters. The new wave of autonomous driving generated a lot of combinations of electric and hydraulic components, according the peculiarities of applications. The authors studied the accuracy of the hybrid steering system of an articulated tractor based on a digital industrial servo valve combined with an ORBITROL standard unit. The structure of the last generation of the trucks hybrid steering systems was also studied, taking into account the real performances of each component. Finally, the effect of the strong penetration of the hybrid servo systems in the automotive manufacturing systems is assessed.

Constraints on water resources and the environment necessitate more efficient use of water. The key to efficient management is an understanding of the physical and physiological processes occurring in the soil-root hydraulic continuum.While both soil and plant leaf water potentials are well understood, modeled and measured, the root-soil interface where actual uptake processes occur has not been sufficiently studied. The water potential at the root-soil interface (yᵣₒₒₜ), determined by environmental conditions and by soil and plant hydraulic properties, serves as a boundary value in soil and plant uptake equations. In this work, we propose to 1) refine and implement a method for measuring yᵣₒₒₜ; 2) measure yᵣₒₒₜ, water uptake and root hydraulic conductivity for wild type tomato and Arabidopsis under varied q, K⁺, Na⁺ and Cl⁻ levels in the root zone; 3) verify the role of MIPs and ion channels response to q, K⁺ and Na⁺ levels in Arabidopsis and tomato; 4) study the relationships between yᵣₒₒₜ and root hydraulic conductivity for various crops representing important botanical and agricultural species, under conditions of varying soil types, water contents and salinity; and 5) integrate the above to water uptake term(s) to be implemented in models. We have made significant progress toward establishing the efficacy of the emittensiometer and on the molecular biology studies. We have added an additional method for measuring ψᵣₒₒₜ. High-frequency water application through the water source while the plant emerges and becomes established encourages roots to develop towards and into the water source itself. The yᵣₒₒₜ and yₛₒᵢₗ values reflected wetting and drying processes in the rhizosphere and in the bulk soil. Thus, yᵣₒₒₜ can be manipulated by changing irrigation level and frequency. An important and surprising finding resulting from the current research is the obtained yᵣₒₒₜ value. The yᵣₒₒₜ measured using the three different methods: emittensiometer, micro-tensiometer and MRI imaging in both sunflower, tomato and corn plants fell in the same range and were higher by one to three orders of magnitude from the values of -600 to -15,000 cm suggested in the literature. We have added additional information on the regulation of aquaporins and transporters at the transcript and protein levels, particularly under stress. Our preliminary results show that overexpression of one aquaporin gene in tomato dramatically increases its transpiration level (unpublished results). Based on this information, we started screening mutants for other aquaporin genes. During the feasibility testing year, we identified homozygous mutants for eight aquaporin genes, including six mutants for five of the PIP2 genes. Including the homozygous mutants directly available at the ABRC seed stock center, we now have mutants for 11 of the 19 aquaporin genes of interest. Currently, we are screening mutants for other aquaporin genes and ion transporter genes. Understanding plant water uptake under stress is essential for the further advancement of molecular plant stress tolerance work as well as for efficient use of water in agriculture. Virtually all of Israel’s agriculture and about 40% of US agriculture is made possible by irrigation. Both countries face increasing risk of water shortages as urban requirements grow. Both countries will have to find methods of protecting the soil resource while conserving water resources—goals that appear to be in direct conflict. The climate-plant-soil-water system is nonlinear with many feedback mechanisms. Conceptual plant uptake and growth models and mechanism-based computer-simulation models will be valuable tools in developing irrigation regimes and methods that maximize the efficiency of agricultural water. This proposal will contribute to the development of these models by providing critical information on water extraction by the plant that will result in improved predictions of both water requirements and crop yields. Plant water use and plant response to environmental conditions cannot possibly be understood by using the tools and language of a single scientific discipline. This proposal links the disciplines of soil physics and soil physical chemistry with plant physiology and molecular biology in order to correctly treat and understand the soil-plant interface in terms of integrated comprehension. Results from the project will contribute to a mechanistic understanding of the SPAC and will inspire continued multidisciplinary research.
