Hip-hop, created by black and Latino youth in the mid-1970s on the East Coast of the United States, is now represented throughout the world. The form's core elements – rapping, deejaying, breaking (dance), and graffiti art – now join an ever-growing and diversifying range of artistic, cultural, intellectual, political, and social practices, products, and performances. The artistic achievements of hip-hop represent a remarkable contribution to world culture; however, the “hip-hop nation” has created not just art and entertainment, but art with the vision and message of changing the world – locally, nationally, and globally. International representations of hip-hop capture and reinterpret hip-hop's history by incorporating local as well as African American aesthetic, cultural, social, and political models. This essay examines the global movement of the hip-hop nation and its artistic incorporation into global youth culture. It considers how that movement is both a social and political process that integrates symbols of African American culture and political struggle.

New antimicrobial properties of products derived fromHumulus lupulusL. such as antiadherent and antibiofilm activities were evaluated. The growth of gram-positive but not gram-negative bacteria was inhibited to different extents by these compounds. An extract of hop cones containing 51% xanthohumol was slightly less active againstS. aureusstrains (MIC range 31.2–125.0 μg/mL) than pure xanthohumol (MIC range 15.6–62.5 μg/mL). The spent hop extract, free of xanthohumol, exhibited lower but still relevant activity (MIC range 1-2 mg/mL). There were positive coactions of hop cone, spent hop extracts, and xanthohumol with oxacillin against MSSA and with linezolid against MSSA and MRSA. Plant compounds in the culture medium at sub-MIC concentrations decreased the adhesion ofStaphylococcito abiotic surfaces, which in turn caused inhibition of biofilm formation. The rate of mature biofilm eradication by these products was significant. The spent hop extract at MIC reduced biofilm viability by 42.8%, the hop cone extract by 74.8%, and pure xanthohumol by 86.5%. When the hop cone extract or xanthohumol concentration was increased, almost complete biofilm eradication was achieved (97–99%). This study reveals the potent antibiofilm activity of hop-derived compounds for the first time.

Song form in North American hip-hop music has evolved along the genre’s journey from its origins as a live musical practice, through its commercial ascent in the 1980s and 1990s, to its dominance of mainstream popular music in the 21st century. This paper explores the nature and evolution of song form in hip-hop music and uses them as a musical lens to view the gradual and ongoing mainstreaming of this genre. With the help of a corpus of 160 hip-hop songs released since 1979, I describe and unpack section types common to hip-hop music­—verses, hooks, and instrumentals—illustrating how these sections combine in different formal paradigms, such as strophic and verse-hook. I evaluate the extent to which formal structures in hip-hop music can be understood as products of the genre’s live performance culture; one with roots in African American oral vernacular traditions such as toasting. Finally, I discuss how form in hip-hop music has increasingly foregrounded the hook (chorus): the emergence of the verse-hook song form, an increase in sung hooks (often by singers outside the hip-hop genre), the earlier arrival of hook sections in songs, and the greater share of a song’s duration occupied by hooks. Viewing hip-hop music’s evolution through this increasing importance of the hook provides a clear representation of the genre’s roots outside of, and assimilation into, mainstream popular music; one of many Black musical genres to have traversed this path (George, 1988).

The article highlights the current problems of hop development in the world, trends and directions of stabilization of the Ukrainian industry for the production of competitive and quality products. An analysis of the current state and further development of world and Ukrainian hop production, identified the main producers of hop products, analyzed the area of hop plantations, yields, gross harvest, varietal composition, world beer production and the need for α-acids. Problems of Ukrainian hop growing are outlined. Before bringing hop products to the world market there are a number of tasks that need to be implemented: ensuring the implementation of competitive advantages of the hop industry of Ukraine – human, resource, geographical, innovative, scientific, geopolitical, infrastructural potential; increase production and improve its quality according to world standards; intensification of investment processes, giving them an innovative focus; growing influence of foreign direct investment; ensuring the growth of domestic market capacity by increasing household incomes and profits of enterprises in the industry; growth of hop production and improvement of export structure.

Aim. To substantiate the prerequisites of increasing the level of competitiveness and effi ciency of domestic hop- growing industry on the road of Eurointegration and entering the international market. Methods. The following methods were used: statistical and economic method, comparative analysis, abstract-logical method. Results. It was established that supply and demand as well as the level of prices for hop products depend on the trends in the international market of hop and on the needs of brewing industry. The key factors of impacting the formation of supply and demand and the possibility of providing for it at domestic hop-producing enterprises are found to be the organization of the production process with the least loss of resources, the availability of competitive varie- ties, a wide range of quality products of the processing. The fulfi llment of the mentioned conditions is possible via the integration of efforts in the spheres of hop products manufacturing, the sale of the latter and support ser- vices. Conclusions. The improvement of the effi ciency of Ukrainian hop-growing industry will benefi t from the development of integration processes, based on the cooperation between adjacent fi elds to form reliable industrial and sales relations and wide access to resources, the adjustment of Ukrainian standards for hop prod- ucts and the variety assortment of cultivated hop in line with the European requirements.

Дисертаційну роботу присвячено удосконаленню технології пива з використанням антиоксидантів з рослинної сировини. Розглянуто окиснення ізо-альфа-кислот при кип’ятінні сусла з хмелем або хмелепродуктами за ланцюговим вільнорадикальним механізмом. Визначено шляхи сповільнення окиснення в результаті додавання антиоксидантів з рослинної сировини. На основі вивчення кінетики окиснення компонентів хмельових смол озонованим повітрям розчинів СО₂-екстракту хмелю підібрано умови, що забезпечують прискорене окиснення компонентів хмельових смол. Доведено ефективність застосування антиоксидантів із рослинної сировини для захисту від окиснення компонентів хмельових смол. Встановлено найефективніші антиоксиданти та рекомендовану кількість їх внесення. Виявлено, що добавка АО із листя м'яти перцевої та кори дуба в сусло в процесі його кип'ятіння із хмелем найбільш ефективно сприяє коагуляції білків сусла й освітленню пива і дає можливість економити 10 % хмелю або його концентратів та збільшити фізіологічну цінність пива. Виявлено, що АО з трави звіробою та кори дуба впливають на вміст летких метаболітів окиснювального обміну, зокрема зменшують вміст діацетилу та ацетальдегіду в молодому та готовому пиві. Запропоновано технологію застосування антиоксидантів з рослинної сировини на стадіях кип’ятіння і охолодження сусла. Визначено технологічні режими внесення антиоксидантів з рослинної сировини і хмелепродуктів. Проведено виробничі випробування технології різних сортів пива з використанням рослинних антиоксидантів на заводі Харківського відділення ПАТ «CАН ІнБев Україна». Виготовлено дослідно-промислову партію об’ємом 10000 дал.
The thesis for a scientific degree of candidate of technical sciences on specialty 05.18.05 – technology of sugary substances and fermentation products. – National University of Food Technologies, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Kуiv, 2014. The dissertation paper is devoted to the improvement of beer technology with the use of plant-extracted antioxidants. Iso-alpha acids oxidation by free-radical-chain mechanism during wort boiling with hop or hop products is discussed. The ways to inhibit the oxidation due to the addition of plant-extracted antioxidants are determined. Based on the analysis of kinetics of ozonized air oxidation of hop resins components in methanol CO₂ hop extract solution, the conditions are found that provide accelerated oxidation of hop resins components. The efficiency of application of plant-extracted antioxidants for anti-oxygenation of hop resins components is proved. The most effective antioxidants and their dosing rate have been determined. It is revealed that adding antioxidants extracted from peppermint leaves and oak bark into boiling wort with hop is most effective for wort proteins coagulation and beer clarification, this provides up to 10 % savings in hop or its extracts and increases the physiological value of the beer. It is found that antioxidants extracted from Hypericum and oak bark influence the contents of volatile metabolites of the oxidizing exchange; specifically they reduce the diacetyl and acetic aldehyde content in young and finished beer. The technology of plant-extracted antioxidants application at the stages of wort boiling and cooling is proposed. The conditions of plant-extracted antioxidants and hop products dozing are determined. Industrial tests of production technology for different beer types with the use of plant-extracted antioxidants were performed at the Kharkov branch of the PJSC «SUN InBev Ukraine». An experimental industrial batch of 10,000 dal was produced.

Most of the thesis is concerned with a seemingly simple example, referred to as the two-boundary problem. The problem illustrates (a) that the use of indefinite inner products can illuminate Probabilistic Wiener-Hopf Theory in symmetrizable cases, and (b) that half-winding probabilities should be thought of as branching measures for Ray processes. The use of the indefinite inner product provides us with an efficient way to tackle the traditionally difficult issue that it duality. A fully rigorous study of time reversal is always a problem for Probability Theory. The analytic approach reveals some results of considerable independent interest. The two-boundary problem is examined in Chapter 2. We begin with the necessary analysis and then confirm everything with the corresponding probability. The nature in which everything tallies is amazing, chiefly due to the crucial theorem that shows the equivalence of PDE and local martingale properties. Moreover, the way in which the analysis effortlessly provides us with the desired duality results cannot be underestimated. In Chapter 3, we look at a one-boundary problem with a drift component. The importance of the duality arguments in Chapter 2 is emphasised. In addition, unlike in the two-boundary problem, continuity of one of the underlying semigroups poses a rather serious problem. This provides motivation for part of Chapter 4. Of particular interest her is a certain mystifying ‘independence of drift’ result. Chapter 4 is concerned with (unorthodox) non-minimal, non-negative solutions of the Riccati equations for both the drift and two-boundary problems. The ‘continuity’ difficulty mentioned above in resolved in some generality.

We construct a new operation among representations of the symmetric group that interpolates between the classical internal and external products, which are defined in terms of tensor product and induction of representations. Following Malvenuto and Reutenauer, we pass from symmetric functions to non-commutative symmetric functions and from there to the algebra of permutations in order to relate the internal and external products to the composition and convolution of linear endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. The new product we construct corresponds to the Heisenberg product of endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. For symmetric functions, the Heisenberg product is given by a construction which combines induction and restriction of representations. For non-commutative symmetric functions, the structure constants of the Heisenberg product are given by an explicit combinatorial rule which extends a well-known result of Garsia, Remmel, Reutenauer, and Solomon for the descent algebra. We describe the dual operation among quasi-symmetric functions in terms of alphabets.

Hog fuel is increasingly becoming an alternative to alleviate the energy problems associated with the use of fossil fuels. To make adequate use of hog fuel, its moisture content should be reduced prior to combustion either in an external dryer or in the initial stages of a hog fuel boiler. Therefore, this research project was undertaken to establish the factors which govern the drying rate of wet hog fuel particles. The convective drying of wood-waste on the slow moving bed of hog fuel boilers was simulated in a packed bed. The information which was obtained can also be applied to approximate the drying behaviour in external dryers. An apparatus was constructed to accommodate the use of hot air, flue gas, superheated steam and a mixture of them as drying media. Drying tests were carried out, over the temperature range of 125-245°C, on 1.1 to 4 kg batches of Western Hemlock hog fuel of thicknesses from 2 to 12 mm. The relative effects of velocity (V), temperature (T), nature of the drying gas, bed depth (L), and initial moisture content of the hog fuel samples (M₀) on the drying process were investigated using a mixture of several thickness fractions having an average (sauter mean) particle thickness (dp) of 6.3 mm. Drying rates were determined through measurement of the change either in humidity of the drying gas, or flow rate of the superheated steam across the bed of hog fuel. Gas humidity was measured using an optical dew point sensor and steam flow was monitored using an orifice plate connected to a massflow transmitter. Drying rates have been quantified as functions of hog fuel particle thickness, initial moisture content and bed depth. The effects of gas temperature, velocity and humidity have also been quantitatively established. The drying process was insensitive to CO₂ content of the drying gas. The existence of an inversion temperature above which drying rates increase with humidity of the drying medium was both experimentally and theoretically confirmed and the locus of inversion points was determined. Instantaneous normalized drying rates, ƒ, and characteristic moisture contents, Φ , have been determined and the existence of a unified characteristic drying rate curve was verified. Using a receding plane model, ƒ was formulated as a function of Φ, for dp = 6.3 mm and at L = 25 cm, for both superheated steam and relatively dry air. Pressure drop measurements were obtained for all the runs with the exception of the superheated steam ones. Application of an accepted pressure drop equation permitted the sphericity of the hog fuel particles to be approximated. A design equation for gas pressure drop in beds of hog fuel particles was investigated. The simultaneous heat and mass transfer processes in drying during the heat transfer controlled period was studied. Using the concept of volumetric evaporation, an empirical correlation for the overall heat transfer coefficient in a packed bed of hog fuel particles has been obtained. The effects of different parameters on both the particle residence time required for drying and the grate heat release rate in hog fuel boilers were determined.

Ce travail a eu pour objectif d'étudier l'oxydation hétérogène de composés aromatiques polycycliques (CAP) adsorbés sur des particules solides, exposés à des oxydants troposphériques. Après adaptation et validation des protocoles analytiques, deux aspects ont été abordés : les cinétiques de dégradation avec O3, NO2 et OH dans un premier temps, puis l'étude des produits d'oxydation formés au cours de ces réactions. Les constantes de vitesse mesurées ont permis de comparer les différences de réactivité entre les composés étudiés (pyrène, 1-nitropyrène, 1-hydroxypyrène, 9,10-anthraquinone). L'influence de différents paramètres sur la réactivité (nature des particules, concentration en HAP...) a aussi été étudiée. Enfin, la détermination des produits d'oxydation et leur quantification, quand cela a été possible, a permis de mieux comprendre le devenir de ces composés particulaires dans l'atmosphère, à travers les mécanismes réactionnels proposés.

The objective of this study is to investigate the degree of risk aversion towards investment in the Quebec hog and dairy sectors. The Direct Elicitation of Utility function was employed to determine producers' degree of aversion to risk. The Delphi technique was also introduced as a means of obtaining more refined and realistic information. The highly diverse risk attitudes which vary between extremely concave and extremely convex utility functions indicate, on average, a slightly risk averse behaviour for both farming groups. Dairy producers have 69% risk-averse, 10% close to risk-neutrality and 21% risk-loving individuals for the $100,000 investment game in the EP format. These figures are respectively 69 %, 6 % and 23 % for hog producers. Hog farmers are found more averse to risk than dairy producers, but more significantly at higher levels of investment. Integrated and non-integrated hog producers do not show any conclusive differences with respect to their risk preferences.

The aim of this study was to audit red cell product utilisation for THR surgeries at two tertiary referral hospitals.

Products such as headphones, music streaming platforms, and learning assessments foster a hearing-centric realization of music that places auditory senses at the forefront of musical experience. Yet within the context of Deaf culture, a linguistic minority defined by the use of sign language, music takes on new meaning as musical experience is expanded to other senses of the body. Despite this relative construction, music in Deaf culture has been subjugated to a hegemonic ideology that undermines and marginalizes Deaf experiences of sound. However, Deaf musicians have been able to work toward subverting the ideological limitations that have been placed on their music, and by extension their bodies, by adapting musical structures produced by mainstream society and realigning them toward Deaf priorities. Using ethnographic methods including artist interviews, this chapter investigates how Deaf rappers have created a style of hip hop that prioritizes Deaf experiences of sound over hearing ones and considers how, through performance, they subvert hegemonic control over Deaf musical expression and promote the inclusion of Deaf forms of musicking.

AbstractWith the rising complexity of modern products and a trend from single products to Systems of Systems (SoS) where the produced system consists of multiple subsystems and the integration of multiple domains is a mandatory step, new approaches for development are demanded. This chapter explores how Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) can benefit from big data technologies to implement smarter engineering processes. The chapter presents the Boost 4.0 Testbed that demonstrates how digital twin continuity and digital thread can be realized from service engineering, production, product performance, to behavior monitoring. The Boost 4.0 testbed demonstrates the technical feasibility of an interconnected operation of digital twin design, ZDM subtractive manufacturing, IoT product monitoring, and spare part 3D printing services. It shows how the IDSA reference model for data sovereignty, blockchain technologies, and FIWARE open-source technology can be jointly used for breaking silos, providing a seamless and controlled exchange of data across digital twins based on open international standards (ProStep, QIF), allowing companies to dramatically improve cost, quality, timeliness, and business results.

This is a position paper. Although modular design is getting wide attention these days, most of the discussions and applications are focused on efficiency, cost reduction, etc., which has been regarded important in the traditional product development or in the producer’s framework. Their focus is how they can prepare wider variety with less time, money and energy. They believe if a wide variety of products are offered. the customer would select the one that would fit them best. Thus, not too much attention is paid to the customer expectations. The current producer do not sell dreams. They just increases the choices. This can be compared to what animals are doing. Animals can use tools, but these tools are found in nature. Animals do not make tools, but humans do, because humans can see the future, while animals cannot. Engineering is an activity to satisfy customer dreams. In this sense, the current industry is not achieving what engineering is supposed to achieve. In addition, as human needs step up, humans would like to actualize themselves. But in the earlier or lower step, their needs are products so products satisfy them. But when they step more and more upward, they find value in the processes. So products alone will not satisfy them enough. They would like to make their dreams come true by themselves. Thus, how we can get customers involved in the production becomes important. In short, we have to consider how we can mix high tech and low tech and work them harmoniously. Some modules needs high tech. Thus expertise is needed. But others can be developed and produced by customers. Then, customers will be very happy because they are players in the game and they feel they themselves are developing a product to realize their own dream. Of course, personal fabrication technology can be used for this purpose. But theirs and my idea are basically different. Their idea is to produce a product by ourselves. But the approach proposed here is focused on our industrial products. The issue here is how we can bring our customers into our product development, which current industries are practicing. If we can design a product, which is composed of modules which needs high tech and expertise and those which can be produced with low tech, then we can bring our customers into low tech and low expertise module production. Although customers are not producing the whole product, they feel happier because they are now making their dream come true themselves. Thus, industries can sell processes. And it should be stressed that this is not a reconfigurable design. The low tech and low expertise modules are really produced by our customers. They do not select modules to produce a product as we do with Lego. This design of mixture of low tech module and high tech module serves for globalization as well. Some developing countries cannot produce high tech modules, because their resources are not enough. But if some modules can be produced with low tech, then they can produce them locally and that will increase employment and the market will expand.

Extrusion process produces semi-finished product that provides significant savings in machining and fabrication of the finished components. Plymouth Engineered Shapes (PES) employs forward extrusion techniques to produce products up to 40 feet long that are utilized in power generation, nuclear, and petrochemical applications where it is critical to meet or exceed ASME piping, boiler and pressure vessels code specifications. The extrusion process has been successfully employed to manufacture components such as various types of valve bodies, manifolds, adapters and more that are targeted for elevated temperature applications up to 1200°F and under high pressures up to 10,000 PSIG. Critical product characteristics include flatness, straightness, twist, angularity, surface quality and dimensions over the full length. This paper presents an overview of the carbon steel and stainless steel extrusion process, the room temperature and elevated temperature mechanical properties, metallographic characterization, testing requirements and the applications of such products. Properties are also be compared to those produced by the conventional hot rolling and forging operations.

The market is a complex system with many different stakeholders and interactions. A number of decisions within this system affect the design of new products, not only from design teams but also from consumers, producers, and policy-makers. Market systems studies have shown how profit-optimal producer decisions regarding product design and pricing can influence a number of different factors including the quality, environmental impact, production costs, and ultimately consumer demand for the product. This study models the ways that policies and consumer demand combine in a market systems framework to influence optimal product design and, in particular, product quality and environmental sustainability. Implementing this model for the design of a mobile phone case shows how different environmental impact assessment methods, levels of taxation, and factors introduced to the consumer decision-making process will influence producer profits and overall environmental impacts. This demonstrates how different types of policies might be evaluated for their effectiveness in achieving economic success for the producer and reduced environmental impacts for society, and a “win-win” scenario was uncovered in the case of the mobile phone.

Improving design for market systems analysis relies on understanding the motivations and interactions among producers and consumers. Producers should theoretically develop their strategies for designing new products based on consumer demand and the expected profits from their sales. In this study, an agent-based modeling approach is proposed to simulate consumer and producer behavior for use in market systems analysis, and it is demonstrated through a simplified automobile market. In the model, consumers make heterogeneous purchasing decisions based on product attributes, which provides the producers with insights into their preferences and how to improve upon these design attributes over time. Emergent behavior of the model shows that analyzing the behavior of consumers provides the opportunity for producers to compete which one another with different strategies to improve their designs by investing in technology improvements. This lays the foundation for future work that can model how different business and regulatory strategies, social structures, and policies influence consumer and producer behavior, which in turn influences economic, environmental, and social impacts.

Engineering designers consider many aspects surrounding a product’s life in order to meet safety, reliability, quality, manufacturing, and cost requirements. Most of the time this is done in an excellent way and the resulting products offers broad functionality with high quality and reasonable price. However serious considerations of integration of environmental requirements are often missed in the product development process. All products contribute to a range of environmental problems. These problems arise through the entire life cycle of products from the creation to the disposal of products. Design for environment (DfE) is the systematic consideration of design performance with respect to environmental, health, and safety objectives over the full product and process life-cycle. It takes place early in a product’s design or upgrade phase to ensure that the environmental consequences of a product’s life cycle are considered. The key issue to success is how to select the most appropriate and effective strategy for a particular product to reduce environmental impacts without disregarding the business strategies in the decision making process. In this paper, a general framework is proposed to integrate the life cycle assessment and decision analysis for prioritizing the design for environment strategy by considering uncertainty issues exist in the decision making process. A case study is illustrated focusing in the product upgrade phase. The ultimate goal is to provide a design advisory tool for product designers in the hopes of facilitating their complex decision making processes by considering the environmental issues in mind.

More than ever before, engineers are creating products for developing countries. One of the purposes of these products is to improve the consumer’s quality of life. Currently, there is no established method of measuring the social impact of these types of products. As a result, engineers have used their own metrics to assess their product’s impact, if at all. Some of the common metrics used include products sold and revenue, which measure the financial success of a product without recognizing the social successes or failures it might have. In this paper we introduce a potential metric, the Product Impact Metric (PIM), which quantifies the impact a product has on impoverished individuals — especially those living in developing countries. It measures social impact broadly in five dimensions: health, education, standard of living, employment quality, and security. The PIM is inspired by the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) created by the United Nations Development Programme. The MPI measures how the depth of poverty within a nation changes year after year, and the PIM measures how an individual’s quality of life changes after being affected by an engineered product. The Product Impact Metric can be used to predict social impacts (using personas that represent real individuals) or measure social impacts (using specific data from products introduced into the market).

Abstract Evaluating the social impact indicators of engineered products is crucial to better understanding how products affect individuals’ lives and discover how to design for positive social impact. Most existing methods for evaluating social impact indicators require direct human interaction with users of a product, such as one-on-one interviews. These interactions produce high-fidelity data that are rich in information but provide only a single snapshot in time of the product’s impacts and are less frequently collected due to the significant human resources and cost associated with obtaining them. A framework is proposed that describes how low-fidelity data passively obtained using remote sensors, satellites, and digital technology can be collected and correlated with high-fidelity, low-frequency data using machine learning. Using this framework provides an inexpensive way to continuously monitor the social impact indicators of products by augmenting high-fidelity, low-frequency data with low-fidelity, continuously-collected data using machine learning. We illustrate an application of this framework by demonstrating how it can be used to examine the gender-related social impact indicators of water pumps in Uganda. The provided example uses a deep learning model to correlate pump handle movement (measured via an integrated motion unit) with user type (man, woman, or child) of 1,200 hand pump users.

Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) has had a tremendous impact in reimagining the design and manufacture of products in a number of industries. The use of MAM to directly produce products continues to be investigated; however, the area of manufacturing tooling has yet to be fully explored. MAM provides a unique opportunity to introduce features that make manufacturing tooling better equipped to efficiently produce complex products. A recent example includes MAM produced molds for the injection molding industry. MAM, in this case, provides the ability to introduce unique features, such as cooling channels, that could not be introduced practically with SM processes. This study explores the use of MAM towards the engineering and design of Extrusion Die Tooling for plastic extruded products. Plastic extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process for a broad range of products from tubing to window frames. These extruded plastic products come in not only a range of sizes, but also different polymer materials. A series of extrusion dies are currently needed in the process in order to achieve the final shape of the product. These dies are effectively designed in two dimensional Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages, because of the current preferred method of fabrication, wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). This study explores the effect of MAM on the extrusion die engineering design process. The explored cases center on common extruded plastic products including tubing and constant wall U-channels. The study first describes how sets of extrusion dies are currently designed in CAD in order to produce the desired extruded product features with established advanced manufacturing processes (EDM). The study then details the effect of using the MAM alternative on the design process, CAD methods selected, and the extrusion die features. The impact of MAM on the extruded die design process are discussed in order to provide guidelines for when it should be considered in order to effectively achieve features on the described extruded plastic products.

Abstract Improving design in the context of market systems requires an understanding of how consumers learn about and evaluate competing products. Marketing models frequently assume that consumers choose the product with the highest utility, which provides businesses insights into how to design and price their products to maximize profits. While recent research has shown the impacts of consumer interactions within social networks on their purchasing decisions, they typically model market systems using a top-down approach. This paper applies an agent-based modeling approach with social network models to investigate the extent to which word-of-mouth (WOM) communications are influential in changing consumer preferences and producer market performance. Using a random network, we study the effects of the number of referrals for a product and the degrees of similarity between the senders and receivers of referrals on purchase decisions. In addition, the eigenvector centrality metric is used to analyze the spread of WOM referrals. The simulation results show that the most influential consumers in the network can create significant shifts in the market share, and a statistical analysis reveals a significant change in the system-level metrics of interest for the competing firms when WOM recommendations are included. The findings incentivize producers to invest in supporting their product development efforts with rigorous social networks analysis so as to increase their market success.

Quality control (QC) laboratories are critical components in drug manufacturing and running them efficiently contributes to better, consistent supply of cost-effective quality products, while also and preventing deaths due to untimely delivery or unavailability of medicines. Having a resource modelling tool to estimate resources needed to handle a particular demand in a given system is essential for efficient running of QC laboratory. This study was done to establish such a model at XYZ Pharmaceuticals. The list of all products manufactured by XYZ Pharmaceuticals Southern Africa was reviewed; and product families for all products were identified. Analysts’ hands on time (HOT) to process one sample of each of the product families was estimated. The number of analysts required to support the workload at XYZ Pharmaceuticals was calculated using the HOTs for the different product families and the Maslaton’s Calculation Model. A baseline resource model was established.

The Eco-Digital Fabrication (EDFAB) research project aimed to investigate how automated prefabrication technologies and off-the-shelf construction products can be employed to disrupt building industry norms. The aim of this research – conducted at the University of Auckland and Unitec Institute of Technology from 2014 onward – was to provide small-to-medium enterprises in the construction industry with a pathway to upskill and increase construction productivity through the use of these processes. The availability of automated machines and easy-to-use fabrication software is increasing dramatically and this can be paired with readily available construction products to produce novel mass-customised housing solutions. The application of basic automated technologies – such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) routers – allowed researchers to create ‘recipes’ that can be adopted and adapted relatively easily. By no means did the research favour digital manufacture or assembly processes over traditional analogue construction techniques – the goal was to provide logical, productive and accessible blended solutions for greater affordability and flexibility in design. For example, the designed experiments were required to be built from readily available products, and used simple readymade screw fixings rather than digitally produced custom fixings or joining mechanisms. The research project aimed to generate discussion and provide recommendations on how the construction industry might support the adoption of automated prefabrication technology in small-to-medium enterprise (SME).

BCO-DMO supports all phases of the data life cycle and ensures open access of well-curated project data and information. We employ F.A.I.R. Principles that comprise a set of values intended to guide data producers and publishers in establishing good data management practices that will enable effective reuse.

Construction activities entail substantial disturbance of topsoil and vegetative cover. As a result, stormwater runoff and erosion rates are increased significantly. If the soil erosion and subsequently generated sediment are not contained within the site, they would have a negative off-site impact as well as a detrimental influence on the receiving water body. In this study, replicable large-scale tests were used to analyze the ability of products to prevent sediment from exiting the perimeter of a site via sheet flow. The goal of these tests was to compare products to examine how well they retain sediment and how much ponding occurs upstream, as well as other criteria of interest to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The products analyzed were silt fence, woven monofilament geotextile, Filtrexx Siltsoxx, ERTEC ProWattle, triangular silt dike, sediment log, coconut coir log, Siltworm, GeoRidge, straw wattles, and Terra-Tube. Joint tests and vegetated buffer strip tests were also conducted. The duration of each test was 30 minutes, and 116 pounds of clay-loam soil were mixed with water in a 300 gallon tank. The solution was continuously mixed throughout the test. The sediment-water slurry was uniformly discharged over an 8 ft by 20 ft impervious 3:1 slope. The bottom of the slope had a permeable zone (8 ft by 8 ft) constructed from the same soil used in the mixing. The product was installed near the center of this zone. Water samples were collected at 5 minute intervals upstream and downstream of the product. These samples were analyzed for total sediment concentration to determine the effectiveness of each product. The performance of each product was evaluated in terms of sediment removal, ponding, ease of installation, and sustainability.

Since the early nineteenth century, cacao has been an important export earner for Ecuador. Today the importance of this sector remains, as Ecuador is the main producer and exporter of Fine and Flavor cacao worldwide. Motivated by the main transformations of the global food systems and the increasing demand for multidimensional credence attributes, this study examines the present state of Ecuador's cacao industry, identifies areas of opportunity, and discusses how the private and public sectors can work together to meet existing and emerging challenges. Findings are supported by interviews conducted with the principal actors in the Ecuadorian cacao industry and two case studies. The first case study focuses on how associativity can help cacao farmers producing high-quality beans to differentiate themselves and succeed in modern agri-food markets. The second case study explores the success of a local chocolate firm and its links with local cacao farmers. Findings suggest that market trends have created new business opportunities for cacao producers and chocolate processors. These opportunities are most open to firms who can personalize and differentiate their products, for example, through the use of quality certifications such as organic, fair trade, reduced carbon load, etc. More importantly, market developments are driving exporters to enhance the performance of cacao value chains in the country, but the sector requires coordination to capture reputation and credence-based demands for the local cacao.
