<p>The comparative analysis of hooded crow breeding ecology was performed for Zhitomir region in 2010-2011 in terms of rural and urban distinctions. Height of trees, tree species diversity in breeding biotopes, nest size, and breeding success of hooded crows were considered for agricultural and urban landscapes. Definite patterns of breeding ecology were estimated for urban and rural populations of hooded crows. On average, the breeding density of hooded crows was 7-8 individuals/km<sup>2</sup> in Zhitomir region.</p> <p>Positive correlation was found between the breeding density of hooded crows and degree of transformation and urbanization of landscape of Zhytomyr region. The main breeding habitats of hooded crows in the Zhitomir region were the wetland sites. Communities of urban birds were characterized by earlier terms of nest building, more higher position of nests in the trees and high diversity of tree breeding habitats. In urbanized landscape we determined high proportion of large (6 eggs) and small clutches of hooded crow (3 eggs).</p> <p>On average the breeding success of crows in Zhytomyr region is 51.1%. We suggested that the main factor was high level of elimination of embryos and chicks of hooded crow. In urbanized landscapes the breeding success (50%) is somewhat higher than that in rural areas (43.5%). This can be explained by specific features of ecological niches - in cities the bird communities have few natural predators that kill chicks and destroy clutches, and potentially have more available food resources.</p> <p><em>Kew words: hooded crow, breeding ecology, Zhitomir region, comparative analysis</em></p>

The crow birds are an inalienable component of anthropogenic ecosystems and the most successful species is the hooded crow. The success of a species depends on the conformity of a speed of adaptation process to the change rate in the environment. Organisms, adapting to the new environmental parameters in the city, demonstrate adaptive mechanisms, and can be a model for studying the evolutionary process. The process of urbanization of the hooded crow continues at present in many parts of its range, but the causes and mechanisms of these processes are not fully understood. The tasks of our research included finding out the directions and rates of the hooded crow adaptations to the changing urban environment. The research was conducted in 1997-2018. In Cherepovets, the hooded crow began to adapt to the urban environment in the late 1950s. The fastest rate of adaptations of the species was observed in the last decade. The main adaptive processes of the hooded crow in the urban system were the following: 1) territorial changes - occur at different rates, following changes in the urban development of residential buildings and in the age composition of trees, as well as changes in the culture of household waste collection service; 2) changes in the habitats of the hooded crow - are the increase in the tree species used for nesting and changes in the height of the nests, and occur during the last 15 years; 3) changes in seasonal life - in Cherepovets, hooded crows begin breeding 2 weeks earlier than in the vicinity; 4) changes in trophic links - increasing the proportion of anthropogenic feed in the diet of hooded crows as Cherepovets develops; 5) ethological changes - hooded crows became less careful at the end of the 1990s and have learned the skills of extracting food from different packages, cleaning contaminated food and dry food maceration.

In the past decade Hooded Crows showed a significant growth in Debrecen. The aim of this study was to become acquainted with Hooded Crows nest-site selection in urban circumstances. The research revealed that Hooded Crows are not choosy when it comes to selecting the species of the trees, but we noticed differences regarding nesting height - Hooded Crows living in the city build their nests in higher regions than those living in places outside Debrecen. We discovered a significant difference between nesting heights and the tree species, which is probably due to the different characteristics shown by the given tree species. As for nesting heights, we found that in typical urban habitats there were no relevant differences shown. Samet the situation, when we compared these habitats in pairs, it came to light that nesting heights - when comparing lonely trees - wood segments and tree raws – wood segments - did not show significant differences too, which can be explained by the various conditions provided by the habitats mentioned.To sum up, during our research the following results emerged:1. Hooded Crows prefer approximately the same nesting heights in all kinds of habitats, urban environment and tree species.2. Nesting height depends on the tree species but independent from habitat.

Free-ranging corvids—678 magpies (Pica pica) and 120 hooded crows (Corvus cornix) from nine protected areas of the Pisa province (central Italy)—were examined for Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella pseudospiralis. The intracardiac blood clots from 651 magpies and 120 hooded crows were serologically examined for T. gondii. The DNA extracted from the hearts of seropositive birds was then used to perform a nested PCR for the amplification of the T. gondii B1 gene and for genotyping for SAG genetic markers. Breast muscle samples from 678 magpies and 91 hooded crows were tested by an artificial digestion method for Trichinella. Data were statistically analyzed. Forty-five (5.8%—41 magpies and four hooded crows) out of the 771 examined animals scored seropositive for T. gondii, with titers ranging from 1:25 to 1:100. T. gondii DNA was detected in 15 of the 45 positive birds and T. gondii genotypes II and III were identified. No positivity for T. pseudospiralis was found. No significant differences between the two species of corvids and among the different areas of origin were observed for seropositivity to T. gondii. This is the first extensive study on both T. gondii and T. pseudospiralis in magpies and hooded crows, as well as the first detection of T. gondii SAG genotypes in magpies.

In recent years, the Hooded crow (Corvus cornix) has become one of the most successful wild bird species in urban environments across Europe. Hooded crows can cause several problems in cities, including trash scattering, noise disturbance, and aggressive behavior toward humans or pets, and they can be potential vectors of pathogens. To find effective solutions, the public has to be involved in the decision-making process in urban planning management, managed by the city administration. In this study, we surveyed the attitude of people in Hungary towards crows and crow management by collecting information using an online questionnaire containing 65 questions published in 14 Facebook groups. We found that many people were familiar with corvid species and had personal experience with them. In most cases, these experiences were not negative, so the crows were not or only rarely perceived to cause problems to people, such as aggressive behavior, damage to cars or stealing something. Most respondents recognized that the presence of large numbers of hooded crows is a problem to be solved and acknowledged that they do not know how to resolve it. The majority of people expressed their interest in raising public awareness of crows but not in their management actions, which they believe should be implemented by experts. Most respondents preferred passive, harmless methods. More direct methods such as egg/chick removal from the nest, control by trapping, poisoned baits or firearms, or oral contraceptives were the least acceptable. These results express the difficulty in identifying a control method for managing hooded crow populations that is both acceptable to most people and effective at the same time. This study demonstrates the importance of involving public opinion in wildlife management and providing more information to citizens to reduce human-crow conflicts.

Врановые птицы являются наиболее многочисленными в орнитофауне городов Ивановской области. В связи с этим возрос интерес к изучению эколого-физиологических особенностей врановых птиц. Данная работа просвещена изучению относительной массы внутренних органов и заболеваний у врановых. Анализ данных показал, что наибольшая относительная масса сердца была у ворона; печени - у сойки и галки; желудка - у сойки и серой вороны; кишечника - у серой вороны и сороки; легких - у ворона; почек - у галки и серой вороны; селезенки - у серой вороны; поджелудочной железы - у ворона. Наиболее часто встречаются травмы: ампутация фаланг пальцев, колотые и рваные раны, переломы трубчатых костей ног и крыльев, гемартрозы, трещины грудной кости. Вороны часто страдают пододерматитом и панкреатитом, серые вороны - спленитом, сороки и галки - ожирением, галки и сойки - гепатозом, серые вороны - гистомонозом печени. Corvids are the most numerous birds in the avifauna of the cities of the Ivanovo Region. In this regard, interest in the study of the ecological and physiological characteristics of corvids has increased. This work is enlightened by the study of the relative mass of internal organs and diseases in corvids. Analysis of the data showed that the raven had the highest relative heart mass; jays and jackdaws have the highest relative liver mass; while the highest relative mass of stomach is recorded in jays and hooded crows. The highest relative mass of the intestines is shown in hooded crows and magpies; heaviest lungs are reported for ravens. Kidneys are heaviest at jackdaws and hooded crows; spleen has the highest relative mass in hooded crows; pancreas is heaviest in crows. The most common injuries are loss of the phalanges of toes, stab and laceration wounds, and fractures of the tubular bones of the legs and wings, hemarthrosis, cracks in the chest bone. Ravens often suffer from pododermatitis and pancreatitis, hooded crows suffer from splenitis, magpies and jackdaws shows signs of obesity, jackdaws, and jays often demonstrate hepatosis, while hooded crows are susceptible to liver histomonosis.

Gatherings of birds at preroosts before departure to nocturnal roosts have rarely been studied and their function is poorly understood. We recorded preroosting behaviour of hooded crows, Corvus corone cornix, in a mixed farmland-forest landscape in southeastern Norway during fall and winter, by selecting gatherings attended by at least one radio-tagged crow for observation. The preroosting crows perched in a highly aggregated and exposed group and did not forage. As the amount of snowfall during the preceding 24 h increased, an indication of sudden difficulty in finding food, the maximum number of crows that gathered increased, the duration of the gathering increased, and the straight-line distance covered by the radio-tagged crows from preroost to roost increased. The crows flew conspicuously in formation more often and for a longer time when on their way from preroost to roost on days with stronger winds. The results suggest that, in hooded crows, a preroost gathering is not simply a consequence of many individuals approaching the same roosting area but has some function, presumably that of maximizing the probability of finding rewarding food sites the next day by finding is a communal roost where information on the location of these sites may be obtained.

AbstractWe investigated the ability of hooded crows to form transitive inferences. Subjects were trained to discriminate a series of overlapping pairs of stimuli: A+ B-, B+ C-, C+ D-, D+ E, where the letters stood for colour stimuli and plus and minus for rewarded or non-rewarded choices. The stimuli were cards of different colours with a circle of the same colour on the reverse side and diameters decreased from A to E. To preclude an influence of the reinforcement history on choices with the test pair BD, an overcompensation phase was instituted after training. It consisted of the presentation of all training pairs with frequencies selected so that the reward to non-reward ratios for stimulus D would be between 1.5 and 2.0 times greater than for B. If, during the BD test, the bird chose the stimuli according to these ratios they should prefer D. If they chose according to diameter relation they should prefer B. During these tests, the crows strongly preferred B over D (83.1%). In a second experiment, subjects were trained with the same procedure except that the diameters of the circles were all the same. During this test, the performance of two crows was not significantly different from chance level (53.1%), and the other two crows preferred D (80.0%). We conclude that crows can solve transitivity tests using cognitive mechanisms if they are offered additional information (in this case circle diameter) which, presumably, allows them to represent the relevant stimuli in an ordered series.

A fundamental goal in biological research is to gain an understanding of the evolutionary processes and genetic elements that drive speciation. Genes responsible for reproductive isolation in young divergent lineages are particularly poorly known. In this thesis, the speciation genetics of carrion (Corvus (corone) corone) and hooded (C. (corone) cornix) crows were studied. These taxa differ strikingly in colouration and meet in a narrow hybrid zone in Europe, yet appear to be very similar genetically. A major component of reproductive isolation is social selection on colour differences. First, we investigated the genetic basis of plumage divergence between carrion and hooded crows using a candidate gene approach. Nucleotide divergence was confirmed to be low, while there was no evidence for any of the sequenced genes to be associated with colour differences. Second, we performed a simulation study to assess the performance of RNA-seq, a relatively novel approach that we later employed ourselves. We asked how variation in transcriptome complexity and bioinformatic workflow affected the accuracy of gene expression profiling. We generally found reassuring robustness and made a number of specific recommendations. Third, we compared the corticosterone stress response of carrion and hooded crows. In accordance with the hypothesis that the degree of melanization and physiological traits are correlated due to pleiotropy, we found a higher stress response in hooded crows, and detected possibly associated gene expression in pituitary. Fourth, we investigated genomic divergence by assembling a hooded crow reference genome followed by whole-genome resequencing of four European population samples. Northern European carrion crows were more similar to hooded crows than to Spanish carrion crows, pointing towards rampant introgression far beyond the hybrid zone. Nevertheless, several narrow genomic regions harboured high between-taxon divergence and were potentially associated with phenotypic traits. Fifth, we compared whole-transcriptome gene expression profiles between crows, focusing on skin with developing feathers. We used a design that allowed to differentiate between taxon-specific, colour-specific and body patterning effects. Widespread underexpression of genes in the melanogenesis pathway was associated with grey colour, and we detected several genes that may contribute to colour divergence in this system.

The characteristics of the rectangular hood are investigated in this study with an apparatus consisting of a hood-model/wind-tunnel assembly. A two-component laser Doppler anemometer is employed to measure the velocity field on the symmetry plane. The streamline patterns are obtained from the measured velocity data. The cross draft causes a characteristic capture envelope similar to a half Rankine body-of-revolution to form in the flow field. All streamlines within the envelope lead to the opening; those outside the envelope evolve to the downstream area. The normalized geometry of the capture envelope is theoretically justified and correlated by modifying the potential theory of point-sink-plus-rectilinear-flow. The domain and shape of the envelope which encloses the hood opening are primarily determined by the velocity ratio between the cross draft and hood suction and the aspect ratio of the hood opening. The behavior of the capture envelope is quite different in the ranges of hood-opening aspect ratio less and larger than 1. The normalized characteristics of the capture zone of the square hood is almost the same as those of the circular hood, if the hydrodiameter is taker as the normalization factor. The correlated formula are applicable to design the hood parameters, including the sizes of opening and flange as well as the location of contaminant sources. The features of two dimensionality of the rectangular hood are also discussed.

The cross draft is a deterministic factor to the performance of a hood in an open atmosphere. To study the extent of influence of a cross draft on a hood, a flanged circular hood was placed in a wind-tunnel-generated cross draft. Both the smoke-streak flow visualization and laser Doppler anemometer measuring techniques were employed to probe the details of the flow field. The capture zone, dividing streamline, parameters for hood design, etc. are particularly focused. An eye-viewed smoke-streak technique was developed and proved to be appropriate for in-situ diagnostics. The measurements of laser Doppler anemometer result in a series of formula which are definitely convenient for the design of the hood size, suction capacity, and position of the contaminants. The study also offers a corner stone for the applicability of the finite opening potential flow theory to the computation of the flow field of an exhaust hood.

The exterior hood is the most commonly used type of exhaust hoods in local exhaust devices. This type of hoods do not enclose a contamination source completely, therefore a cross draft will unavoidably affect its capture performance. According to previous studies, the exhaust flow induced by an exterior hood combines with a uniform cross draft will form a capture zone in front of the hood. All the streamlines inside of the capture zone will lead to the hood opening; those outside of the capture zone will lead to infinity. Present study employed a animation program to simulate the capture behavior of the exterior hood with a rectangular opening. The flow field is assumed to be viscosity-free. The size and shape of the capture zone was obtained at various combinations of average opening velocity, cross draft velocity, and opening aspect ratio. The computational results were found to be consistent with previous experimental observations. The capture zones formed by a square opening were also found to be similar with those formed by a circular opening. While the cross draft is fixed, because the capture zone must enclose an exhaust opening, the shape of a capture zone will be affected by aspect ratio of the opening. While the exhaust flow rate and the cross draft are fixed, the depth and width of a capture zone are inversely related at different aspect ratios of the opening. The aspect ratio will become a major factor for the shape of a capture zone at a small velocity ratio (the ratio of average exhaust velocity at the opening to the cross draft). However, while the velocity ratio becomes larger, the effect of the aspect ratio becomes less.

The cross draft is a deterministic factor to the performance of an external type suction-hood which operates in an open atmosphere. The cross draft normally changes the bell-type capture zone of a suction hood into a semi-body-of-revolution. Because of the alteration of the capture zone, the pollutant originally placed under the hood may expose out of the effective operation area. Previous researches were focused on the effects of the cross draft on the circular and retangular hoods. Some important results other than conventional recognition of the hood operation parameters were found. The suction-to-cross flow velocity ratio dominates the flow field in the case of circular hood. While in the case of the rectangular hood, the characteristic lengths of the capture-zoon are affected primarily by the suction-to-cross flow velocity ratio of the hood opening. Some useful semi-empirical equations are enumerated for convenient applications of industries. The present work is aimed on two phases. The first is to continue previous work on the suction/cross-draft interaction. At this stage, the influence of the flange dimention is concerned. The results show that the flange size has unapparent effect on the capture zone geometry except the area near the stagnation point on the hood suction plane. The central line velocities in the cases of no-flange and flange-attachment present no significant difference. The installation of flange to the hood opening has no extral benefit to a pollutant placed directly under the hood if the suction face-velocity is maintained at the same levels. The only benefit of the flange installation is the decrease of power consumption. In order to maintain the same level of hood-face velocity as that of a flanged hood, the no-flange hood has to pay for the extral pressure loss induced by the near-opening recirculation of the flow. The flange width-to-hood diameter ratio presents a critical value about 2.0. Larger than the critical value the capture zone dimention does not change through out the whole flow field. The second phase is to control the deteration of the capture zone induced by the cross draft. With the understanding of the flow physics, an simple blockage method to prohibit the influences of the cross draft is studied. By using the recirculation bubble behind a blockage-plate placed in the passageway of a rectilinear flow, an invisible and steady air curtain can be formed to surround the hood effective area. This air curtain can protect the pollutant from escaping from the capture area of the hood, still retaining the convenient access of the operaters. An extended application is that an on-purposely generated cross draft may increase the intensity of the air-curtain, and lead to a virtually isolated suction envelope. The detailed design parameters and physics are discussed in the text.

AbstractThe field of biotechnology has been rigorously researched and applied to many facets of everyday life. Biotechnology is defined as the process of modifying an organism or a biological system for an intended purpose. Biotechnology applications range from agricultural crop selection to pharmaceutical and genetic processes (Bauer and Gaskell 2002). The definition, however, is evolving with recent scientific advancements. Until World War II, biotechnology was primarily siloed in agricultural biology and chemical engineering. The results of this era included disease-resistant crops, pesticides, and other pest-controlling tools (Verma et al. 2011). After WWII, biotechnology began to shift domains when advanced research on human genetics and DNA started. In 1984, the Human Genome Project (HGP) was formerly proposed, which initiated the pursuit to decode the human genome by the private and academic sectors. The legacy of the project gave rise to ancillary advancements in data sharing and open-source software, and solidified the prominence of “big science;” solidifying capital-intensive large-scale private-public research initiatives that were once primarily under the purview of government-funded programs (Hood and Rowen 2013). After the HGP, the biotechnology industry boomed as a result of dramatic cost reduction to DNA sequencing processes. In 2019 the industry was globally estimated to be worth $449.06 billion and is projected to increase in value (Polaris 2020).

This chapter examines Anna Botsford and John Henry Comstock's sabbatical year abroad in Egypt and Greece. On January 1, 1908, the Comstocks boarded the Italian steamer “Perseo,” bounded for Alexandria. Arriving early on January 5 in the city of Euclid and Cleopatra, the Comstocks then visited the Egyptian Quarter—a narrow, crooked street through houses that date back to Cleopatra's time. From Alexandria, they traveled to Cairo, where they wandered through the Ezbekieh Gardens and admired the palm trees and studied the hooded crows. They also took a train to Old Cairo and visited the pyramids. However, one of their most interesting experiences in Cairo was a visit to the University which is held in the Mosque of Gamai el-Azhar. Later, it was on the S.S. Osmaniah that the Comstocks took passage from Alexandria to Greece. They then went to the Acropolis and the Parthenon in Athens.

Most children in Ontario, Canada, who are involved in child protection services receive services while living with their family or kin; are temporarily placed in the custody of child protection services and live in foster homes, group homes, or kinship care homes; or are placed permanently in the care of child protection services. Until April 2018, this last group of young people were legally designated Crown Wards. This chapter describes a peer-led strategy which sees current and former Crown Wards in Ontario, Canada, plan their own educational journey while at the same time reaching out to other young Crown Wards to encourage them to do the same. Bourdieu’s field theory—specifically the concepts of social capital and habitus—are applied to the project. Fostering social capital, network mapping, and peer-centered practice are emergent models useful to the engagement process and essential as relational practice methods.

This chapter demonstrates how Isaac Newton’s emerging attitudes toward perception, and the very process of measurement itself, were different from those of his contemporaries. It discusses the Hooke–Hevelius controversy. In 1673, Hevelius published the first part of his Machinae coelestis, which provided verbal descriptions and elaborate plates of the naked-eye devices that he had constructed for determining stellar coordinates. The very next year Hooke took umbrage at the publication and attacked it in print in a series of Animadversions. Hooke was not only certain that naked-eye observations could not possibly match those performed with a telescope equipped with cross-hairs, and had urged Hevelius to adopt the new apparatus. Hevelius nevertheless published the Machinae, and Hooke was incensed. The chapter also details Huygens’ and Boyle’s attitudes toward perception and measurement.

This chapter provides a pause and the opportunity to integrate case illustration insights with the vast literature on urban gun violence. Bringing together these two worlds—practice and theory—allows the ability to garner lessons for moving forward in crafting urban interventions addressing this key issue. Those who are practice oriented can take these lessons and craft interventions that take into account local circumstances, which is a key element in best practices. Academics can take marching orders for furthering scholarship on this violence. Readers can see cross-cutting themes that emerged with implications for how academic disciplines and helping professions can collaborate with urban self-help organizations in helping them, and readers, carry out their respective missions. Opportunities for youth to connect with caring adults is also important in efforts to interrupt gun-carrying behavior, and they must also be part of the equation within self-help organizations, as seen in these case illustrations and throughout the book. Changing youth attitudes and behaviors influences future gun use by these individuals as they survive youth-hood and emerge as adults. The focus must be on the present with an eye toward the future and respect for the past.

Effective hoods are critical for the protection of workers from airborne contaminants. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of cross-draft and presence of a worker on the effectiveness of the bench-top enclosing hoods, which, unlike laboratory fume hoods have no sash and have a constant cross-sectional area. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, FLUENT, with shear-stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model was used to investigate the effect of orientation of the manikin and hood with respect to cross-draft on the flow and contaminant concentration field. Experiments were conducted using a manikin and a fume hood in a wind tunnel and the flow around the manikin and inside the hood was investigated via particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The correlation of contaminant leakage with the turbulent intensity and recirculating vortices at the hood face were observed. The hood and manikin orientation was found to change the exposure level significantly. Maximum contaminant leakage from the hood to the working environment has been found when the hood and manikin were placed 30 degrees to the cross draft. Maximum containment was observed when the manikin and hood were oriented in the same direction as the cross draft and perpendicular to the cross draft.

Abstract The pantograph subjected to sudden changes of the airflow while a high-speed train passes through the entrance and the exit of tunnels and the aerodynamic force acted on the pantograph fluctuate significantly, which can result in bad influence to the current characteristics of the pantograph. Aimed at studying the effect of buffer structures on such issue, the aerodynamic force of pantograph while passing through a tunnel with buffer structures, including bell mouth hoods, oblique hoods, and constant cross section (with the same cross section area to main tunnel) hoods were simulated by utilizing CFD software. The object of this study is a full-scale CRH380A train model composed of three groups with the CED400 pantograph model. The IDDES turbulence model combined the technique of overset grid is adopted in the computation. The results indicate that both the aerodynamic drag and lift fluctuation of the pantograph are reduced at the entrance and the exit of a tunnel with the bell mouth or side opening buffer structures, especially at the exit of the tunnel, the amplitude of lift force fluctuation can decrease to a quarter of the value in condition of conventional tunnels, the oblique hoods buffering structure has no obvious alleviation effects on the aerodynamic force fluctuations.

The thermal conductivity of the silicon nanowire was calculated using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method. The dependence of thermal conductivity on the wire length, cross-sectional area, and temperature was investigated. The Stillinger-Weber potential model and the Nose-Hoover thermostat were used. The surfaces at the wire ends were set free boundary conditions and potential boundaries in other directions. The cross-sectional area range of the nanowires under research is from about 5 nm2 to 19 nm2 and the length range is from about 6 nm to 54 nm. The results agree well with experimental results. The reciprocal of thermal conductivity was found to be linear with that of nanowire length. And our results quantitatively showed that decreasing the cross-sectional area can reduce the phonon mean free path of the nanowire.

Abstract A review is given of the theory of the compression wave generated when a high-speed train enters a tunnel. The train is modeled by a distribution of monopole sources whose interactions with the tunnel portal determine the detailed characteristics of the wave. The waveform can be calculated exactly at subsonic train Mach numbers for a tunnel consisting of an unflanged cylinder of semi-circular cross-section, which has been the subject of extensive experimental study. An analysis of this case reveals how an approximate theory can be developed for arbitrary tunnel portals and train Mach numbers as large as 0.4. Details are given for flanged portals of both semi-circular and rectangular cross-sections. Nonlinear steepening in a very long tunnel is responsible for an intense, environmentally harmful, micro-pressure wave, which propagates as a pulse from the distant tunnel exit when the compression wave arrives, with amplitude proportional to the maximum gradient in the compression wavefront. The analytical theory permits the design of tunnel portals that greatly increase the initial wave thickness (thereby tending to inhibit wave steepening), either by flaring the portal, or by installing a tunnel entrance hood, which allows high pressure air produced by the train to be vented to the environment through windows in the side walls. A formula is given for the ‘optimum’ flared portal, which produces a pressure gradient across the wavefront that is constant and an overall minimum, so that the pressure in the wavefront increases linearly and provides the maximal protection against shock formation. The operation of tunnel entrance hoods is discussed in terms of a continuum model in which an axial section of the tunnel extending inwards from the entrance is perforated with a distribution of small apertures.

The aerodynamic performance and internal flow behavior of the last stage and exhaust hood for large power steam turbine was numerically investigated using commercial CFD software ANSYS-CFX. The computational domain includes all stator and rotor blades of last stage and exhaust hood including bracing tubes and strengthening plates. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solution was utilized to analyze aerodynamic performance of last stage and static pressure recovery coefficient of exhaust hood. For comparison, the internal flow pattern of the individual exhaust hood was also analyzed without consideration of the last stage effects. The static pressure and Mach number distribution at the meridional plane of the last stage was illustrated. The velocity vector distribution at different cross sections in the exhaust hood with and without consideration of the last stage influence was compared. In addition, the static pressure and pressure loss contours distribution in the exhaust hood were also studied. The obtained results show that the outflow of the last stage can significantly influence the aerodynamic performance and flow pattern of the exhaust hood. To obtain a reliable prediction of the aerodynamic performance of the exhaust hood, it is necessary to consider the interaction between the last stage and exhaust hood.

Abstract The floating wind industry requires dynamic 66kV inter array cable to be installed and hooked up to the floating structure on both ends. While first end lazy wave initiation is a common practice, the scope focus on 2nd end lazy wave installation to obtain the final configuration according to max design excursion of the floater and temporary measure to be taken. The inter array cables are preset cable length with end termination which are either design for short term subsea or long term subsea storage. For the floating wind turbine, the 2nd end cable requires to be inserted into I-tube with specific arrival angle and a lazy wave configuration compatible with extreme design excursion of the floater (circa 30m). The Windlfoat Atlantic 2nd end required cross haul to the I tube while keeping sag bend well above seabed, with no uncontrolled contact. Temporary buoyancy module was connected to lazy wave to achieve this transient configuration, maintaining the operating radius of the power cable, with correct I-tube entry angle. For Windfloat floater design, the I.tube are disconnectable from the floater and is self standing in case of disconnection of floater.

Reliance Gas Pipelines Limited (RGPL) is currently implementing a gas pipeline project from Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh to Phulpur, Uttar Pradesh for evacuation of gas produced from Coal Bed Methane (CBM) blocks owned by Reliance Industries Ltd. This pipeline will be hooked up with GAIL’s HVJ Pipeline at Phulpur. Over all Pipeline system includes 312 km (approx.) long trunk line, and associated facilities such as Compressor Station at Shahdol, Intermediate Pigging facilities, Metering & Regulating facilities at Phulpur and 12 No. Mainline valve stations. Gas produced from CBM blocks will be dehydrated within Gas Gathering Station facilities of CBM Project located upstream of pipeline Compressor station at Shahdol. Gas received at pipeline battery limit is dry and non-corrosive gas in nature, Internal corrosion is not expected in normal course of operation, however internal corrosion of the natural gas pipeline can occur when the pipe wall is exposed to moisture and other contaminants either under process upset conditions or under particular operating conditions. Even though internal corrosion is not expected during normal course of operations, to take care of any eventuality, it is proposed to implement Internal Corrosion Monitoring (ICMS) system in this project. ICMS will provide an efficient and reliable means of continuous monitoring internal corrosion. Internal Corrosion Monitoring (ICMS) system is used as a part of overall integrity management framework; to achieve two objectives viz., verify the corrosive behaviour of gas and to verify the efficacy of applied preventive actions. Philosophy involved in evaluating a suitable CM technique would include : • Applicable corrosion damage mechanisms, anticipated corrosion rates and probable locations. • Suitable CM technique and location based on process condition, system corrosivity, water content, pigging facilities, available corrosion allowance, design life, maintenance etc., • Measurement frequency. Some of the Corrosion Monitoring techniques used for pipeline and of relevance are: • Weight-loss Corrosion Coupons (CC), • Electrical Resistance probes (ER), • Linear Polarization Resistance Probe (LPR) • Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UT) • Sampling Points (SP) This paper discusses the merits / demerits of these corrosion monitoring techniques, considerations for selecting a specific technique for the Shahdol – Phulpur Gas Pipeline Project and highlights the implementation of the internal corrosion monitoring system.

The paper presents the results of measurements of flow parameters behind the last stage of a 1090 MW nominal power steam turbine in a nuclear power plant. The results were obtained by traversing a pneumatic probe at a distance of about 100 mm from the trailing edges of the LSB (Last Stage Blade). Furthermore, both side walls as well as the front wall of one flow of the LP (Low Pressure) exhaust hood were fitted with a dense net of static pressure taps at the level of the flange of the turbine. A total of 26 static pressures were measured on the wall at the output from the LP exhaust hood. Another 14 pressures were measured at the output from the condenser neck. The distribution of static pressures in both cross sections for full power and 600 and 800 MW power is shown. Another experiment was measured pressure and angle distribution using a ball pneumatic probe in the condenser neck area in a total of four holes at a distance up to 5 metres from the neck wall. The turbine condenser is two-flow design. In one direction perpendicular to the axis of the turbine cold cooling water comes, it heats partially. It then reverses and it heats to the maximum temperature again. The different temperature of cooling water in the different parts of the output cross section should influence the distribution of the output static pressure. Differences in pressures may cause problems with uneven load of the tube bundles of the condenser as well as problems with defining the influential edge output condition in CFD simulations of the flow of the cold end of the steam turbine Due to these reasons an extensive 3D CFD computation, which includes one stator blade as well as all moving blades of the last stage, a complete diffuser, the exhaust hood and the condenser neck, has been carried out. Geometry includes all reinforcing elements, pipes and heaters which could influence the flow behaviour in the exhaust hood and its pressure loss. Inlet boundary conditions were assumed for the case of both computations from the measurement of the flow field behind the penultimate stage. The outlet boundary condition was defined in the first case by an uneven value of the static pressure determined by the change of the temperature of cooling water. In the second case the boundary condition in accordance with the measurement was defined by a constant value of the static pressure along all the cross section of the output from the condenser neck. Results of both CFD computations are compared with experimental measurement by the distribution of pressures and other parameters behind the last stage.

The main objective of this study was to inspect the effect of steel fiber ratio into the flexural behavior of large-scale doubly reinforced concrete beams using an experimental method. For this purpose, four RC beams were constructed at the Structural Mechanics Laboratory of İzmir Katip Çelebi University and three-point bending tests were carried out. Two out of four were selected to be control specimens and did not have any fiber additive. To investigate the behavior free from shear reinforcement effect, one of the control specimens did not have stirrups while the remaining one had a minimum amount of stirrup according to TS500 [1]. Last two beams had either 0.5 or 1% volume fractions (Vf) of hooked end fibers, respectively. All the beams were designed to have 150x200x2450 mm prismatic geometry with a 1.30% tensile reinforcement ratio. The used materials were commercially available S420B grade steel for reinforcement and in-house cast concrete having a mean cylindrical compressive strength of 25 MPa. Based on the test results it can be stated that having a minimum amount of stirrup according to TS500 or 0.5% steel fiber enabled the beams to fully use their flexural capacity instead of an enhancement in the capacity. In other words, steel fibers contributed to the shear strength similar to that of beam with minimum amount of stirrup. However, increasing the volumetric ratio of steel fibers to 1.0% did not only contributed on the behavior but also slightly enhanced the flexural capacity (10%) of beam specimen, basically depending on the increase in the moment capacity of the cross-section.

The Plain City Southwest (SW) and Ogden Bay 7.5′ quadrangles are in Weber, Box Elder, and Davis Counties. The quadrangles include parts of the communities of Hooper, Warren, and Reese, the Harold Crane Waterfowl Management Area, several waterfowl wetlands, as well as the southwestern corner of Willard Bay Reservoir. The North Fork and South Fork of the Weber River f low south into the Ogden Bay Wildlife Management Area at the edge of Great Salt Lake. The northwestern part of the Ogden Bay quadrangle and the southwestern part of the Plain City SW quadrangle contain most of Little Mountain, a small bedrock mountain with about 500 feet of relief. The western side of Little Mountain as well as the northern part of the Plain City SW quadrangle are part of Willard Bay of Great Salt Lake. Small meandering channels flow into the bays from local drainages. Numerous evaporation ponds related to industrial minerals production cover the central western and northwestern part of the Plain City SW quadrangle, obscuring geologic deposits. This mapping project will provide the basis for identifying and delimiting potential geologic hazards in future Utah Geological Survey (UGS) geologic hazard maps, part of the UGS Geologic Hazards Mapping Initiative (Castleton and McKean, 2012). Mapping for the project was done on stereographic pairs of aerial photographs from the following sources: black-and-white aerial photographs from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (1958, 1965, 1971a, 1971b). Mosaics of some USDA photographs were accessed using the Weber County web services (USDA Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, 1937, 1962, 1980, 1985). Additional aerial photography sets from the National Agricultural Imaging Program (NAIP) were used (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC], mid-1990s, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2016a, 2018a, 2021a) as well as high-resolution (15cm) Hexagon imagery (Utah Geospatial Resource Center, 2021b). Most Quaternary unit contacts, including human disturbed areas, were mapped using two lidar elevation datasets (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC], 2016b, 2018b). The geologic map was made by transferring the geology from the aerial photographs to a geographic information system (GIS) database using the programs ESRI ArcPro and Global Mapper v. 18 for a target scale of 1:24,000. Cross section A-A′ was created in Adobe Illustrator. Field-based investigations included shallow subsurface investigations in targeted areas with a soil auger. Materials from 1 to 3 meters were observed, documented, and sampled, which aided in preparing descriptions of most Quaternary units.
