Comic books are becoming increasingly popular in the field of education. In the past, comic books were excluded from school libraries and classrooms. However, with the resurgence in the popularity of comic books and students’ increased demands for them, they are now considered as recreational reading with educational value. In response to this, school libraries have begun collecting comic books and including them as part of their regular collections. This research paper reflects on the current situation of comic books in primary and middle school library collections and examines school librarians’ perceptions towards educational values of comics. The investigation was launched in Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia and Japan – making comparisons amongst different levels (primary school and secondary school), and different types (public school and private school) of schools in five different countries. Questionnaire surveys were sent to selected school librarians and were the main method of data collection. A total number of 683 responses were collected for this study. Research results include librarians’ attitudes towards comic books in school libraries, adolescent readers’ use of school libraries, their reading and borrowing practices, as well as other problems encountered with the on-going maintenance of comic books as part of the school libraries’ regular collections.

In this article, I investigate the evolution of the core values of the Hong Kong people through the term Sai-lou 細路, by means of storytelling in a transmedia context and with a focus on different historical stages, from approximately the end of the Second World War to the 2014 Umbrella Movement. Using the late 1930s four-panel comic strip, Sai-lou Cheung 細路祥 (Kiddy Cheung) created by Yuan Bou-wan 袁步雲 (1922–95) as the origin work for the term, this study examines the core values reflected in the 1950s film Sai-lou Cheung細路祥 (The Kid or My Son A-Chang) starring 9-year-old Bruce Lee, the 1999 film Sai-lou Cheung 細路祥 (Little Cheung) directed by Fruit Chan as well as news reports of the 2014 sit-in street protests whose student leaders the public regarded as Sai-lou 細路 (‘kids’).

The discourse and cultural identity of Hong Kong media have long been of academic concern. Hong Kong media and the consumption of cultural products often reveal the process of local cultural identification formation and discourse practices. Based on the textual analysis of a local comic, Teddy Boy, this article attempts to explore and examine the discursive culture and nature of Hong Kong identity. Based on du Gay et al.’s concept of the circuit of culture, this article explores how the local discourse is formed and legitimized in the process of textual production and consumption by the representation of an idealized cultural hero. In the conclusion, we argue for a connection between local and global identity formations.

This paper explores the way Hong Kong independent comics encapsulate the essence of the city. Independent comics are distinguished from mainstream comics by their specific mode of production. More significantly they demonstrate an emphasis on subjective personal creativity and craftsmanship, which stands out sharply in the pervasive objective culture in modern society. Adopting an anthropological approach in representing local ways of living, these comics attempt to map an identity of Hong Kong in a way that is free from confusing influences of her postcolonial history, her political subordination to China and the global capitalist forces. The artists of independent comics embrace the essence of local culture by focusing on space and cultural memory and thereby rediscovering the truth and characteristics of life in Hong Kong. As a form of popular cultural text, Hong Kong independent comics package the local identity and history into fashionable goods for cultural consumption. Together with this, the articulation of a shared past creates forces of cohesion that binds the community together and offers a way for the people to negotiate their identity.

Past paper drilling has been a core component in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), the university entrance examination in Hong Kong, China. Such drilling is normally done with pen and paper as this resembles the actual examination scenario. Nonetheless, this poses huge administrative costs when it comes to analysis of student work and performance. With such, various online platforms have been developed to allow students to complete past papers online. To investigate students’ perceptions towards using online platforms to complete examination papers, 25 Secondary 6 (Grade 12) students in a Hong Kong secondary school participated in a pilot programme in which they completed a HKDSE reading comprehension paper through an online platform accessed using school-provided Chromebooks in-class. Apart from using an online platform as the means of assessment, all other variables were kept controlled when compared to an actual in-school assessment. After the test, students were given tentative scores and immediate feedback generated through the platform’s auto-marking feature. They were also engaged in a short feedback session explaining their scores, strengths and weaknesses, before further follow-up sessions over the next few days centralizing on extra materials developed based on their weaknesses as identified in through their work. When comparing results from their pre-programme and post-programme surveys and when drawing on the teacher-researcher’s observation notes, findings showed that while initial perceptions of making use of an online platform to complete past papers saw an overall change from negative to positive, feedback was generally mixed in terms of technological requirements, efficiency, educational outcomes and physical demands. Given the increasing importance of digital devices in the modern-day classroom, this paper sheds light on students’ perceptions towards using e-assessment tools and applications in language learning, and holds particular importance in the future development of such platforms.

In recent years, deep cement mixing (DCM) method, a non-dredged ground improvement technique, has been adopted in several local large-scale reclamation works. It is also a robust ground improvement solution and can expedite land formation. Currently, design and construction methods adopted in Hong Kong are mostly referred to the practice or guidelines developed in other countries. With more local experience gained and in view of the potential application in possible coming mega development projects which involve reclamation and ground treatment works, it is considered worthwhile and timely to conduct more detailed studies to understand the engineering properties of the materials improved by this technique and to harness the design and construction practice, with a view to enhancing the cost effectiveness of DCM works. This paper briefly introduces some on-going research related to DCM method covering several design and construction aspects including engineering properties, ground investigation and laboratory testing using laboratory mixed and field mixed cores. The objectives, potential application and preliminary results of the studies are presented and discussed in the paper.

Learning to learn is the theme of the current educational reform in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Learners should be well equipped with collaborative skills, communication skills, creativity, critical thinking skills, and skills in using information technology to be responsive to the changing requirements of the workplace and the society. We have drawn the elements of collaborative learning from research findings and come up with a new model to be implemented for our learners in the coming semester using the Web as an avenue for on-line discussions and peer assessments. The group projects, bi-weekly reflective journals, peer assessments should be able to cultivate learners’ positive attitude towards sharing. The evidence will be gathered through quantitative and qualitative means to examine if there is any relationship between collaborative learning and peer assessment with the final assessment grades received.
