LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract in English only.Sun’s article is a useful exploration of the body ethics model of medicine. However, a body is not the equivalent of a person—the body is waiting to utter its meaning. This commentary, which adopts a phenomenological perspective, discusses different ways of treating the body and of interrogating the senses of the body understood by patients and doctors. Divergent such senses influence the doctor-patient relationship in quite distinct ways. To establish a new clinical model, this commentary holds that we need to pay greater attention to the epistemology and methodology of somatic phenomenology, which can inspire us to understand the comprehensive significance of the body for medicine.DOWNLOAD HISTORY | This article has been downloaded 35 times in Digital Commons before migrating into this platform.

Sound affects and pervades our body in a physical as well as a phenomenological sense: a notion that may sound fairly trivial today. But for a long time in Western history ‘sound’ was no scientific entity. It was looked upon merely as the lower, material appearance of truly higher forces: of more ephemeral, angel-, spirit- or godlike structures – and later of compositional knowledge. To be interested in sound was to be defamed as being unscientific, noncompositional, unmanly. Which steps were taken historically that gradually gave sound the character of a scientific entity? This article moves along recent science history: since the nineteenth century when the physicality of sound and later the corporeality of sonic experiences were first discovered and tentatively described. Exemplary studies from the science history of acoustics, musicology and anthropology of the senses are analysed and restudied – from Hermann von Helmholtz to Michel Serres. Even today, we may ask ourselves: What would an auditorily-founded research be like? Could there be a field of sensory research – via sensing sound?

AbstractDisability studies and Pentecostal studies have not interacted much in the young history of both fields of inquiry. This essay identifies some of the reasons for this missed interface, explores how disability perspectives might bring to the fore resources for rethinking Pentecostal understandings of disability, explicates (with the help of a disability hermeneutic) the Pentecostal theology of "many tongues" bearing witness to the gospel with the correlative motif of "many senses" capable of receiving and giving witness to the works of God, and reassesses the possibility of Pentecostal contributions to theology of disability and disability studies in light of the "many senses" motif. My thesis is that the dialogue between disability studies and Pentecostal studies will be challenging but also helpful for both sides, even as our joint efforts might also testify to the wonders of God in and through the diversity of embodied human experiences.

Abstract Before this century, urine was the predominant body fluid used by the physician for diagnosis and prognosis. Uroscopy, or urinalysis by the senses, has usually been treated disparagingly in historical accounts of diagnostic medicine. Although uroscopy was at times used fraudulently, the thoughtful use of urinalysis was probably an important part of diagnosis for the physician, even before the chemical analysis of urine.

: In this paper, we aim to study the human body as a form of translation by unfolding the (non)presence of the senses in two editions of U vojny ne ženskoe lico, one of the most successful “novels of voices” by Nobel Prize-winning author Svetlana Alexievich. First published in 1985, the book gathers testimonies of women who fought in the ranks of the Red Army during World War II. By conducting a comparative analysis of the appearance (and absence) of sensory perceptions in two versions of the text (from 1985 and 2013), we have concluded that the writer makes multiple changes at a microstructural level. The overlapping of the senses in the discursive construction of the most recent version of the book helps Alexievich to translate the horrors of the bloodiest conflict in history, enabling the reader to feel the war through the body of another person.

This article examines the body, space, and sound in three of Franco-Senegalese director Alain Gomis’s feature films, Andalucia (2007), Tey (2012), and Félicité (2017). These narrative and aesthetic strategies situate Gomis’s work within Hamid Naficy’s concept of accented cinema and Laura Marks’s category of intercultural cinema. The multisensoriality of Gomis’s films, notably evoking the aural and tactile senses, expand my discussion beyond the visual and align his approach with current areas of inquiry in film studies. I argue that these unspoken languages offer new possibilities for considering the decentering project of cinéma-monde as they transcend geographical borders, linguistic boundaries, and historically defined binaries.

This article explores a kinship between aviation and cinema through the intersection of affective gender, dreams, and flying as expressed across newspaper accounts of women and flight, star discourse related to Mabel Normand and Mary Pickford, and the sexualized scenes of aerial joyriding in Abram Room’s Bed and Sofa (1927) and Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks’s Plane Crazy (1928). It argues that in order to fully understand the aviation-cinema nexus, we must dislodge it from its masculinist heritage within high modernist myths. Key to this dislodging is the reinsertion of gendered associations of the body, affect, and the senses into the modernist myth of aerial vision as a weightless, abstracted regime of the eye. The article theoretically frames this historical exploration of aviation and cinema as an exemplary case study for an expanded rethinking of affect, reception, and the senses in Miriam Hansen’s notion of cinema as vernacular modernism.

In this article, Emma Widdis suggests that a sensory history is a crucial counterpart to the recent emotional turn in Russian and Slavic scholarship on Russian and Slavic history and culture. In particular, the Soviet revolutionary project was a unique attempt to create new models of human experience to correspond to the new political order—an attempt to shapesensoryexperience itself. Widdis suggests that the still-young medium of cinema was a privileged site for the investigation of new models of sensory perception, for the working out of the problematic relationship between the body, the mind, and the world that had such ideological potency in early Soviet Russia. Linking close readings of little-known films from this period to a broader analysis of the discursive field within which they operated, Widdis suggests that, in the period of transition between 1928 and 1932, intensified sensory (and particularly tactile) experience emerged as a new and revolutionary mode of being in the world.

According to Ayurveda, all living and non living objects in the universe are made up of Panchamahabhutas. In accordance with the requirements of LokaPurushaSamayaSiddhanta1, the world and the human body are connected entities with the same panchabhutaconstitution. Finding things that behave or look like organs and figuring out which foods are ideal for a certain organ or organ system both use the same notion. CarakaSamhitadescribes three supports of life viz. ahara(intake of food), nidra(sleep) and bramhacarya(control of senses and spiritual bliss conducive to the knowledge of Bramhan). Food (ahara) is regarded as the most significant of these. Hitakara/pathyadiet promotes longevity, strength, intelligence, a clear voice, and a healthy complexion in addition to maintaining good health. Organs should be kept healthy to improve our overall quality of life. The human perceptual system is essentially multisensory. I studied how vision modulates the bodily senses, particularly the multisensory modulation of the visual context on touch and pain. I used a combination of behavioural, neurostimulation and electro-physiological techniques to investigate the neural correlates of contextual multisensory interactions. I first demonstrated that the visual context modulates touch: task-irrelevant visual arrowheads influence spatial representations of stimuli perceived by touch, depending on the spatial coincidence between visual and tactile sensory inputs (Chapter 1). These visuo-tactile interactions do not require spatial attention to occur, being preserved in brain-damaged patients with attentional deficits (Chapter 2). Importantly, the occipito-temporal cortex is causally involved in merging visual and tactile inputs in multisensory representations of shape (Chapter 3). I then showed that the visual context can also modulate pain perception: in particular, I demonstrated that viewing one's own body in comparison to viewing an object is analgesic, increasing contact heat-pain thresholds of 3.2 °C (Chapter 4). This 'visually-induced analgesia' is reflected in enhancements of sensory cortical rhythms, possibly due to active inhibition of somatosensory processing (Chapter 5). In addition, changes in the excitability of the extrastriate visual cortex are involved in multisensory modulation of pain (Chapter 6). Taken together, these results indicate that the visual context modulates the processing of touch and pain. Visual cortical areas mediate visual-somatosensory contextual interactions.

The thesis is concerned with ways in which tourists’ experiences of learning to dive are mediated by technology, equipment and cultural constructions that are projected through visual media. The empirical chapters take a different theoretical body of literature to demonstrate the extent to which mediation alters human perception. The thesis is informed by research participants who took part in an experimental visual methodology that sought to open up new ways of studying the senses. The empirical chapters cover a consideration of the phasing in and out of attention of equipmental prosthetics for learner divers, a phenomenological study of the reorganisation of the senses underwater, a Bergsonian take on the intersubjective nature of recollection upon encountering material relics at a wreck site. The construction of docile diving bodies are considered, in relation to appropriate ways of moving and thinking about the ocean’s inhabitants, before the final empirical chapter outlines the mediative role of videographic souvenirs, as they polish memories of previous experience and alter relations to place. The thesis concludes by drawing attention to the way in which understandings of underwater space are constructed before, during and after real-time perception of the ocean and its various inhabitants. Consequently, it is noted that underwater experience is both highly subjective and intertextual, being furnished by the associations and atmospheres that each learner diver brings to the encounter and being re-presented to others by means of what each diver takes away.

During the First World War, as it was impossible to import raw material and cereals from enemy countries, Germany had to impose bread rationing on the population. The first food to be rationed was bread. From the beginning of the conflict in 1914 to the treaty of Versailles in 1919, this study’s objective is to understand the experience of this food and in what way it’s qualitative and quantitative evolution influenced the Homefront’s will to support the war. The question leads to link the history of the senses with the history of emotions, the study of social practices and of cultural representations, of the press and the censorship, of the politics of bread, of the medicine and of the food security. The anticipation of the first shortages materializes from 1914 to 1916 through the creation of new institutions and the search for new substitutes to replace flour, but also through the invention of a war bread, which consumption becomes a patriotic gesture. From 1916 on, the bread’s qualitative and quantitative decline leads to the expression of disgust and to its refusal, although it continues to be suffered by the consumers and mocked by the enemies. From 1918 to 1919, war bread remains in the heart of demands for the return to the tastes of peace times and a more fundamental reassessment of the rationing system, as well as the State’s role. This study had been made possible thanks to many precious archives and invites to question several prejudices concerning « the German war bread » rooted in a more ancient opposition between white and black bread. The conservation of material traces and the transmission of bread-making practices in the long run indicate the capital role of this food for the experience, but also for the remembrance of the war. They prove the interest of a subject which stakes stretch out until the Second World War

This dissertation examines the intersections of the body, senses, and labor within a Post-Fordist, consumption based economy. Data was collected via ethnographic research of specialty coffee baristas. The concepts of “sense work,” “taste frameworks,” and “minimum wage connoisseurship” are introduced for identifying the social components of sensory experience. The specialty coffee industry serves as one examples of a larger “taste economy.” This research demonstrates how sensory experience can fall under management control and aid in the development of a new, niche “consumer market” (Otis 2011), characteristic of Post-Fordism. Additionally, an examination of the boundary work and identity formation within the specialty coffee industry provides new insights into how the body and the senses are implicated in the production and reproduction of class inequality.

This monograph on the œuvre of contemporary American author and multimedia artist Shelley Jackson addresses the question of how literary works employ language to evoke sense impressions. Gilles Deleuze’s notion of aesthetic percepts is drawn on to develop a theory of literary phantom sensations which is then tested on the work of Jackson and related authors.  Although imperceptible as such, it is argued that percepts are made perceptible in art in sense-specific forms as phantom sensations. “Phantom” is not meant to indicate a pale shadow of real sensations but the intensely perceived realness of phantom limb phenomena, in accordance with Deleuze’s understanding of the virtual as real but not actual. For the sake of clarity, literary phantom sensations are divided into phantom smells, tastes, touches, sights and sounds, with a chapter devoted to each in turn. It is found that different phantom sensations serve different functions in Jackson’s work, correlated to the cultural history of the senses as outlined by recent sensory scholarship.  Phantom smells are associated with Deleuze’s concept of becoming due to their liminality. Phantom tastes contribute to an aesthetics of distaste in which shades of disgust are cultivated and drawn upon for literary effect. Phantom touch creates conceptual intimacy and invites the reader to handle words like toys in a game. Phantom sight is turned back upon itself in an anatomy of the eye. Phantom hearing is associated with forms of ventriloquism in which it is unclear who is speaking through whom and in which language itself throws its voice. However, it is also found that all phantom sensations similarly serve to create a material and affective connection between the body of the reader and the body of the text. Throughout the dissertation, Jackson’s work is read against and alongside that of other writers such as Djuna Barnes, Neil Bartlett, Brigid Brophy and Leonora Carrington. Together these form a trajectory termed minor writing for queers to come, which is meant to indicate that aesthetic and sexual-political  radicalism go hand in hand.  Furthermore, Jackson’s work is described as a form of body writing informed by feminist body art and écriture féminine. Specifically, Jackson takes her cue from early modern anatomical blazons and describes living bodies in pieces.  Her work is also described as object writing: a literary equivalent to surrealist object art.  A central method for making words more like things is to arrange her texts spatially rather than temporally, as exemplified by her electronic hypertexts.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Aesthetic Movement in England coalesced literary and visual arts in unprecedented ways. While the writers associated with the Aesthetic Movement reflected on visual art through the exercise of criticism, their encounters with painting, portraiture, and sculpture also led to the articulation of a problem. That problem centers on the fascination with the attentive look, or the physical act of seeing in a specialized way for an extended period of time that can result in a transformation in the mind of the observer. In this dissertation, I consider how Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Henry James, and Oscar Wilde utilize the attentive look in their poetry, fiction, and drama, respectively. As I argue in this dissertation, the writers associated with the Aesthetic Movement approach and treat attention as a new tool for self-creation and self-development. As these writers generally attempt to transcend both the dullness and repetitiveness associated with modern forms of industrialized labor as well as to create an antidote for the endless distractions affiliated with the modern urban environment, they also develop or interrogate systems for training and regulating the senses. What these writers present as a seemingly spontaneous attentive engagement with art and beauty they also sell to the public as a specialized form of perception and experience that can only be achieved through training or, more specifically, through an attentive reading of their works. While these writers attempt to subvert institutional authority, whether in the form of the Royal Academy or the Oxford University system, they also generate new forms of authority and knowledge. Even though the Aesthetic Movement is not a homogeneous set of texts and art works, the Aesthetic Movement can be characterized in terms of its utilization of attentiveness as a way to both understand and create modern subjectivity.

AbstractToivo’s chapter systematizes prayer as experience on three levels, as everyday encounters, as social processes and as structures. It shows the material and the corporeal nature of the early modern prayer to play an essential part in the ways the religious experience of a prayer was simultaneously constructed and personalized and shared. Praying was ‘doing’ in a much more holistic sense than merely saying words or even less thinking thoughts to God. The body and the material surroundings of the prayer form a space where the experience takes place, even ‘a tool’ to experience with.

Chapter Three begins by examining the importance of boats as technologies for living and working at sea - in contrast to a great deal of literature about the sea and fishing that focusses on human-environment relations only. The chapter draws on Marcel Mauss’ analysis of techniques to ethnographically and phenomenologically examine the way in which boats and other tools are used to extend people’s bodies and sensory perception deep into the sea. As a result of these extensions, the sea is treated as a familiar workspace and caring relationships of maintenance develop between people and their tools and boats. The chapter investigates how human subjectivities and bodily safety are affected by the struggle to remain in control of the extended practices often used to work at sea. This control also depends on the ownership of boats and their gear. The chapter engages with the history of the Scottish herring fishery, the anthropology of the senses, and Lucy Suchman’s and Michael Jackson’s anthropology of human-machine relations. It also draws on anthropologies of labour-action, enskilment and task-orientation by Michael Jackson, Gísli Pálsson, and Tim Ingold.

Abstract The body is vital and necessary to prophetic mediation. Even as a long history of mind-body dualism has contributed to the privileging of word over body, recent developments in and beyond biblical studies furnish tools for an embodied paradigm of analysis that recognizes the synergy of word and body. This paradigm combines insights from studies of embodied cognition, senses, affect, and anthropology with linguistics, literary and cultural theory, and more. Prophetic commissioning narratives offer a programmatic portrayal of bodily encounter and mediation. Bodily transformations ranging from visibly altered face and skin to ascetic practices and altered states of consciousness contribute to the character of the prophetic body as mediating bridge. Prophetic mobility, immobility, affect, and emotion continually link the body of the prophet to the bodies of God and people. The study concludes by highlighting two areas for further research, namely forms of embodied prophecy and prophecy’s embodied reception.

Abstract To obtain a historical perspective on disability, we need to know what questions people of the past asked about each other and thus how they grouped human types. This effort involves removing the carapace of modern forms of classification and avoiding their imposition on the primary sources of an era so distant from our own (“retrospective diagnosis”). At least three major forms are identifiable: (1) the post-Cartesian divide between mind and body; (2) the tightening of forms of human categorization in general since the late Middle Ages; and (3) the thoroughly modern divide between the scientific/medical and the social. Human disparities and putative disabilities, ranging widely from the ancient era to the start of the Middle Ages and including the body, the senses, cognition, speech, social behavior, and sexual make-up, are discussed. These may or may not correspond with modern categorizations.

This chapter introduces an account of Willa Cather framed by approaches drawn from Body Studies, and specifically that area of cultural studies focused on the history of the senses. Cather is juxtaposed against such figures as the public intellectual Randolph Bourne and the founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. The chapter also deploys and then inflects the concept of the ‘habitus’ to explore the ways in which Cather’s fiction represents distinctive cultures and ways of bodily being or embodiment.

A city divides into forms and attitudes, into significances, in the most political of senses, into episodic impressions, grand narratives and great collective generalizations. Cities are the vehicles for vivid nostalgia and are often the victims of banal cliche, both in the making of their form and in the way they are perceived. They are collaborative works, and, like works of art, they are conceived passionately, formed imperfectly, understood and misread by a continually transforming and distracted collective. Cities embody myth and fact, blurring the border between the two. All this applies especially to the fraught history and troubled body of the American city.

Introduction: There are vital needs that keep us going even when we are worn out or without a clear expectation of achieving some transfer to an external object. Unlike common sense, the demands of life do not come from what we want from the outside world, in other words, from our material aspirations. The outside world depresses us, but it doesn't cause us melancholy. What drives us comes from within, from our own lived body. For Jerusalinsky (2012), the repeated search for transference in autism constitutes fragments designated as partial objects. It still relativizes the imagined totalization, being that it prescinds to being only that agent who lives on the other side of the mirror (maternal agent). Objectives: The aim of this paper is to present the body as a memory of repetition in Autism and what the consequences would be of placing this body in relation with the internal and external world, with spaces, others and oneself. Methodology: In discourse analysis, we use movement and relationship as a theoretical-analytical device. Thus, the production of meanings is understood in comparisons, relationships, dissonances, approximations and displacements. It is in the event and in the analysis of other (non-linguistic) materialities that we will present the results. Results: The experiential experiences of childhood and the relationship between mother and baby are primordial for subjective constitution and the production of meanings in the formation of the psyche. Affective life, emotions, identifications and the strengthening of bonds of social belonging are anchored in this phase and from there emanate all the threads that bind the unconscious content. The case study of mother A.S. and her relationship with little R.A. showed that the child with autism is constituted in primary and secondary regressive and partial identifications, with their own singularity constituted in repetition. The symbolic and imaginary contents to remember and repeat are repeated without success. Conclusion: This work has focused on the considerations of Merleau-Ponty's (2011) studies on the body that inhabits the world and makes it a lived world. All the premises about affective life, the formation of the psyche and the unconscious come from the studies of Sigmund Freud and the psychoanalysts who followed him and affirmed or refuted his writings, helping psychoanalysis to become a theory in process. The case study presented in this paper is about little R.A., aged four, and his mother, his personal history and the constitution of a subjective body in the memory of repetition.

One of the major contributor leading to cause of unintentional injuries after motor vehicle crashes and poisoning, is Falls. The existing Fall Prediction Algorithms are used to predict falls in older or disabled people by analyzing their fall history, capturing their movements through visual sensors (cameras, thermal imaging etc.) in a fixed environment, using inertial sensors to identify the patterns of movements. These algorithms are monologues for each person as they learn from their history and predict falls specific only to that person. The algorithm proposed in this paper aims to predict falls using kinematic data such as accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscopic values, for any user. This work involves developing an algorithm capable of predicting falls and to achieve this, we use Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The benefit of this algorithm is to prevent trauma to the body or at least reduce the impact of fall and the fatality caused by it. In the future, this algorithm can be used to design a device to predict falls in real-time to scenario be used by everyone irrespective of gender, age, and health.

As muscles fatigue, their passive and active mechanical properties change increasing the susceptibility of the human body to damage. The state-of-the-art technique for muscle fatigue detection, EMG signals, is cumbersome. This paper presents a technique to detect fatigue by tracking a kinematic parameter of the musculoskeletal system. The method uses the time-history of a single joint angle to detect fatigue in the lower limbs. A sensor is mounted to the knee joint to measure the knee flexion angle. Time delay embedding is used to track the orbit of knee joint motions in a reconstructed phase-space. The reconstructed phase-space allows us to obtain information about other body parts and joints of the lower limb in addition to the knee joint, since they are all connected in an open kinematic chain. Long-time drift in the orbit location and shape in phase-space is quantified and used as a measure of lower limb fatigue. The proposed technique presents a mobile, wireless, and cheap method to assess fatigue that can act as an early warning system for the lower limb.

Background: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (PNH) is manifested by the triad apraxia of gait, dementia and urinary incontinence. The fear of falling and the loss of a sense of self-efficacy in body balance and mobility results in the restriction of social participation. Objective: to verify the relationship between gait speed and self-efficacy for falls in individuals with PNH. Methodology: This is an observational and cross-sectional study, carried out at the Clinical School of Physiotherapy at UNIFRAN, with CEP approval (CAAE 83164918.2.0000.5495). The convenience sample consisted of 3 individuals with PNH, with DVP, age 72.5 (± 3.6), who presented independent gait without using a walking aid device and MMSE 23.6 (± 1.2) and a history of more than 2 falls in the past year. They were assessed for the sense of self-efficacy for falls using the Falls Efficacy Scale - International (FES-I) questionnaire. The speed of normal and fast gait was calculated by the time taken to cover 10 meters. To verify the relationship between FES-I and gait speed, association and correlation tests were applied. Descriptive analysis was performed and the paired t test and the Pearson correlation test were used. Results: The FEI-S average was 31.3 ± 4.8 points. The average normal walking speed was 0.62 ± 0.24m / s and the average fast speed was 0.77 ± 0.32m / s. The participants were not able to significantly modify the gait speed (p = 0.073). There was a positive correlation between FES-I and gait speed (r = 0.68; p = 0.027). Conclusion: The low self-efficacy for falls interferes with the ability to change the gait pattern through speed. Understanding the fear of falling and walking speed can help in the mapping of cases that deserve, in addition to conventional rehabilitation, a behavioral intervention to increase the sense of self-efficacy, and thereby improve walking independence.

This paper provides an overview of the tools used to conduct independent modeling and simulation of Artemis 1 separation events and highlights challenges and lessons learned across a decade of analysis. An overview of each of the tools along with the process flow and key components of maintaining independence from the Program’s baseline tool set will be provided. In addition, each of the separation analyses conducted will be discussed, making note of key models incorporated for each event and unique challenges that were addressed. The technical work described in this paper is part of an on-going technical assessment conducted by the NASA Engineering and Safety Center to develop and maintain an independent modeling and simulation capability in support of Space Launch System (SLS) and Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) throughout design, verification, and flight readiness cycles. For Artemis 1, an end-to-end analysis approach was taken with events simulated from launch to re-entry. This paper will focus on the separation events, including liftoff clearance analysis, solid rocket booster (SRB) separation from Core Stage (CS), Service Module (SM) panel jettison, ICPS / Core Stage Separation, and MPCV/ ICPS separation. To assess separation clearances, the NESC has developed a high fidelity, independent 6-degree of freedom (DOF) simulation of the separation events. The simulation was developed using the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories II (POST2). POST2 is an industry standard flight trajectory optimization and simulation tool that is Class D compliant and follows NASA NPR 7150.2, which includes regression testing, unit testing, and configuration control of the simulation. The primary objective of the SLS separation and clearance analyses was to estimate the clearances between different vehicle components and/or ground support equipment (GSE) during separation events. The clearance is defined as the minimum distance from any point on one 3D geometry model associated with one vehicle component (or GSE) to any point on another 3D geometry model associated with a vehicle component separating from the main body. The vehicle geometry models used by the NESC to compute the separation clearances were derived from CAD models. POST2 simulation results were post processed in the Exploration Visualization Environment (EVE) tool to compute clearances, and detect recontact occurrences, if any, between the separating stages. EVE is a simulation, visualization, and analysis system designed to integrate time-based dynamics data with detailed graphical models in a full-scale virtual environment. EVE was used to simultaneously calculate more than 30 different separation clearances by “driving” detailed vehicle geometry models with position and attitude time history data obtained from the POST2 simulation. EVE displays each clearance distance visually, at any given instant of time, with a straight line connecting the two closest points on each object and records the time history of the clearance distance in a file. If the clearance reduces to zero, then EVE reports it as a recontact. To perform separation analyses, POST2 Monte Carlo analyses were performed by running 2000 dispersed cases that included over hundreds of uncertainties and dispersions for a range of simulation models including aerodynamics, propulsion, navigation sensors, control actuators, slosh and flexible body dynamics, and winds and atmosphere. Clearances were computed for each of the dispersed Monte Carlo trajectories and overall separation performance was statistically assessed. Over the past decade the POST2 simulation and EVE visualization tools have been used to perform detailed assessments of the separation events that occur during the Artemis 1 ascent. To support these assessments, numerous unique simulation models were developed and integrated into the standard suite of POST2 simulation models to address and resolve key concerns specific to each of the Artemis 1 separation events. In addition to presenting an overview of the multi-body 6-DOF simulation and separation analysis capability, the paper will discuss the integration of key simulation models such as flexible body dynamics, slosh dynamics, separation mechanisms, multi-body aerodynamics, and environmental models. Additional details are provided about other challenges that were addressed, including the use of a convex hull to reduce computational time for clearance calculations, the modeling of incidental recontact during separation events, and the capability to simulate failure scenarios.

Even before the formal negotiation process of the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM) for membership in the European Union began, the important role that the Parliament should play in this process was highlighted. The main contribution of the Parliament to the European integration process should be ensuring the sustainability of the reforms. The Assembly is the key place for organizing a dialogue between the government, the opposition, and civil society about the far-reaching goals of the reforms that will be made in the rapprochement process. And the European Commission further emphasized that it sees the national parliaments of the countries of the Western Balkans as a link between the citizens and Brussels. Without a stable, functional, effective representative body, these challenges will not be met. In every developed democracy, the problem of the relationship between the government and the political parties represented in the parliament has always been an actual issue. The increase in the number of political forces in the parliament leads to the need to form coalitions and, accordingly, the greater the fragmentation of political interests, the more difficult it is to build consensus, which should imply an agreement between influential MPs, regardless of whether they are in the majority or the opposition. Hence, the aim of this paper is an analysis of the representation of political forces in the Macedonian parliament in the last ten election cycles through the “index of the effective number of parties” as a tool, designed to consider the problem of balance between the representation and effectiveness of the elected bodies and their dependence from the electoral mechanisms. For this purpose, first, in a theoretical sense, the typologies of party systems and the index for the effective number of parties (developed by Estonian political scientists Laakso and Taagepera) will be reviewed. Then, with the help of this index, will be determined the number of effective parliamentary parties in the past ten parliamentary compositions in RNM. The RNM is very convenient for such an analysis because in the country’s three-decade plural history different electoral models were applied – in the parliamentary elections in 1990 and 1994, the majority, in 1998, there was a mixed (parallel) model, and since 2002, a proportional model has been applied.

[Executive summary] Literacy studies have traditionally focussed on the seen. The other senses are typically under-recognised in literacy studies and research, where the visual sense has been previously prioritised. However, spoken and written language, images, gestures, touch, movement, and sound are part of everyday literacy practices. Communication is no longer focussed on visual texts but is a multisensory experience. Effective communication depends then on sensory orchestration, which unifies the body and its senses. Understanding sensory orchestration is crucial to literacy learning in the 21st century where the combination of multisensory practices is both digital and multimodal. Unfortunately, while multimodal literacy has become an increasing focus in school curriculum, research has still largely remained focussed on the visual. The Sensory Orchestration for Multimodal Literacy Learning in Primary Education project, led by ARC Future Fellow Professor Kathy Mills, sought to address this research deficit. In addressing this gap, the project built an evidence base for understanding how students become critical users of sensory techniques to communicate through digital, virtual, and augmented-reality texts. The project has contributed to the development of new multimodal literacy programs and a next-generation approach to multimodality through the utilisation of innovative sensorial education programs in various educational environments including primary schools, digital labs, and art museums.

Review question / Objective: The purpose of this review is to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and safety on mind-body therapies of traditional Chinese medicine for neuropathic pain. Condition being studied: According to the definition by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), neuropathic pain is a kind of pain caused by lesions or diseases affecting the somatosensory nervous system. It has brought considerable negative impacts on patients and society. Neuropathic pain is a prevalent disease and can be induced by a variety of clinical conditions such as spinal cord injury (prevalence rate: 53%), induced peripheral neuropathic pain (prevalence rate: 38%), diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (prevalence rate: 10%-26%), chemotherapy postherpetic neuralgia (3.9-42.0/10,000 people per year), prosopalgia (3-5/10,000 people per year), and so on. However, current recommended medicines for neuropathic pain management could cause dependence and adverse events. Thus, alternatives would be helpful for both patients and clinicians. Mind-body therapy in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history in clinical practice for relieving pain and their effectiveness has not been systematically reviewed. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness and safety on mind-body therapies of traditional Chinese medicine for neuropathic pain.

Introduction and Importance: Retained surgical body (RSB) is unusual life-threatening condition occurred postoperatively. Despite its rarity, multiple protective and management policies were documented by policymakers. Case Presentation: A 62-year-old female patient presented with a few months’ history of abdominal mass. She presented to our hospital 8 years post-abdominoplasty that was performed in a private sector. The underlying cause of the abdominal mass was identified by abdominal and pelvic computed tomography (CT) with IV contrast as a surgically retained foreign tubular object. Then, the decision was made to proceed with an open surgical technique to remove the RSB, which was defined as a missed drain tube. The postoperative period was uneventful. Clinical Discussion: Post-operative RSB, as a retained drain fragment, is a surgical challenge that necessitates standardization of error reporting strategies, awareness enhancement, and improvement of professional communication between surgical teams in the operation room. Conclusion: This case highlights the serious consequences of RSB and the radiologic tools in foreign materials identification. We report the case of a 62-year-old female patient with a long-standing history of abdominal mass, found to be caused by an unintentionally retained drain tube missed 8 years post-abdominoplasty.

Flying cars—as a new type of vehicle for urban air mobility (UAM)—have become an important development trend for the transborder integration of automotive and aeronautical technologies and industries. This article introduces the 100-year history of flying cars, examines the current research status for UAM air buses and air taxis, and discusses the future development trend of intelligent transportation and air-to-land amphibious vehicles. Unsettled Topics Concerning Flying Cars for Urban Air Mobility identifies the major bottlenecks and impediments confronting the development of flying cars, such as high power density electric propulsion, high lift-to-drag ratio and lightweight body structures, and low-altitude intelligent flight. Furthermore, it proposes three phased goals and visions for the development of flying cars in China, suggesting the development of a flying vehicle technology innovation system that integrates automotive and aeronautic industries.

The article explores Polish-Ukrainian relations, in particular, the Ukrainian question, on the pages of the journal “Sprawy Narodowośсiowe” during 1931-1935. The authors emphasize that the millennia-long history of Polish-Ukrainian relations contains many complex, contradictory, and sometimes tragic pages. The situation of the Ukrainian national minority in interwar Poland, particularly in the first half of the 1930s, was challenging. The article proves that the editorial board of the “Sprawy Narodowośсiowe” journal (which was the governing body of the institute researching national issues, established in 1921, and first published in 1927) was examining the theoretical aspects of the national question in Poland during the first half of the 1930s and carefully analyzing the lives of national minorities, including Ukrainian minority. The heading “Ukrainians” in the “National minorities in Poland” category was the largest in terms of content. This indicates that the journal’s editorial board considered the resolution of the Ukrainian question to be a priority. The editors informatively and prudently informed readers about the activities of Ukrainian political parties (except for the underground Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) and the most important public organizations. The article proves that the magazine generally advocated the idea of Polish-Ukrainian understanding, but remained loyal to Polish state interests. The magazine aimed to study the sentiments of Ukrainian society and identify the trends in the development of these sentiments. The article also substantiates that the journal was not a government mouthpiece since the national policy did not demonstrate a desire to fairly address the national issue. Key words: Polish-Ukrainian relations, history of interwar Poland, history of Ukraine, national issue, journal «Sprawy Narodowościowe».
