Introduction Cortical spreading depression (CSD) has recently been shown to induce the release of the nuclear protein termed high-mobility group box 1 from neurons, causing activation of the trigeminovascular system. Here, we explored the effects of single and multiple cortical spreading depression inductions on high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) transcriptional activity relative to high-mobility group box 1 protein expression levels and intracellular localization in cortical neurons and astrocytes. Methods Single or multiple cortical spreading depression inductions were achieved by KCl application to the mouse cerebral cortex. The animals were sacrificed at 30 minutes, 3 hours and 24 hours after cortical spreading depression induction. High-mobility group box 1 expression levels were explored with in situ hybridization, Western blotting and immunostaining. Results Cortical spreading depression up-regulated high-mobility group box 1 transcriptional activity in neurons at 3 hours in a manner that was dependent on the number of cortical spreading depression inductions. At 24 hours, the high-mobility group box 1 transcriptional activity had returned to basal levels. Cortical spreading depression induced a reduction in high-mobility group box 1 protein expression at 3 hours, which was also dependent on the number of cortical spreading depression inductions. Following cortical spreading depression, the release of high-mobility group box 1 from the nucleus was observed in a small proportion of neurons, but not in astrocytes. Conclusion Cortical spreading depression induced translocation of high-mobility group box 1 from neuronal nuclei, driving transcriptional up-regulation of high-mobility group box 1 to maintain protein levels.

The effect of rod arrangement in a rod matrix on high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) performance has been comparatively investigated through a cyclic pilot-scale centrifugal HGMS separator, with contiguously and orthogonally arranged rod matrixes respectively. The results of investigation indicate that the arrangement of rod elements in the matrix has a distinct effect on the HGMS performance, for relatively low magnetic inductions; beyond the threshold magnetic induction, the magnetic induction dominates that of the arrangement and the importance of the arrangement is significantly weakened even vanished. It was thus concluded that the combinatorial optimization for magnetic elements in the matrix improves the collision efficiency of particles with matrix, and gives a superior performance in a HGMS separator, at a lower energizing consumption.

Single episodes of cortical spreading depression (CSD) are believed to cause typical migraine aura, whereas clusters of spreading depolarizations have been observed in cerebral ischemia and subarachnoid hemorrhage. We recently demonstrated that the release of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) from cortical neurons after CSD in a rodent model is dependent on the number of CSD episodes, such that only multiple CSD episodes can induce significant HMGB1 release. Here, we report that only multiple CSD inductions caused microglial hypertrophy (activation) accompanied by a greater impact on the transcription activity of the HMGB1 receptor genes, TLR2 and TLR4, while the total number of cortical microglia was not affected. Both an HMGB1-neurtalizing antibody and the HMGB1 inhibitor glycyrrhizin abrogated multiple CSD-induced microglial hypertrophy. Moreover, multiple CSD inductions failed to induce microglial hypertrophy in TLR2/4 double knockout mice. These results strongly implicate the HMGB1–TLR2/4 axis in the activation of microglia following multiple CSD inductions. Increased expression of the lysosomal acid hydrolase cathepsin D was detected in activated microglia by immunostaining, suggesting that lysosomal phagocytic activity may be enhanced in multiple CSD-activated microglia.

Relevance Uninterrupted operation of industrial facilities, oil and gas sector, metallurgy, power generation and other industries directly depends on reliable operation of critical mechanisms driven by electromechanical converters, operated as a part of working complexes. Reliability of operation of such mechanisms depends on reliability of all elements that make up the technological process. Inductions motor with squirrel-cage rotor (including high-voltage motors) is one of the most common types of converters of electrical energy into mechanical energy. Its uninterrupted operation directly depends on the reliability of two main elements: stator and rotor. If the causes of induction motor failure due to stator causes (inter-turn, inter-phase and single-phase short circuits) are determined by the provided protections, the damage in the rotor circuit can be implicit and exist for a long time, violating the machine uptime. Also, most of the faults in the inductions motor, leading to an emergency shutdown of technological processes of working complexes have their own history of development. At the moment of occurrence and during the period when the defect does not affect the serviceability of the machine, but its operation becomes critically dangerous, because it is not possible to determine the presence of the defect. So, for example, the breakage of the short-circuited rotor core of a high-voltage induction motor manifests itself at the stage of exit to the air gap at the time of operation, with subsequent damage to the stator winding and the magnetic core. In this case, the existence of this defect took place within a certain period of time, sufficient for its detection by means of diagnostic devices. The article analyzes the currently developed systems for diagnosing the presence of a fault according to various parameters (temperature, noise, vibration, analysis of electrical values consumed) both in the stator and in the rotor. It is determined that the most promising and technically feasible are methods based on the analysis of stator currents. When studying the works in the direction of inductions motor diagnostics it was found that a significant proportion of failures of mechanisms operated in the working complexes due to failure of inductions motor occurs due to broken rotor bar. Aim of research Analyze the existing methods for diagnosing induction motors during operation. Research methods The article used general scientific research methods: the method of analysis of literary sources, the study and generalization of information, comparison, classification. Results The analysis of existing methods of continuous diagnostics of induction motors for internal electrical and mechanical damage is carried out. It has been determined that the most promising from the point of view of economic and technical feasibility are methods based on the analysis of currents consumed by the stator.

Withaferin A (WFA), a Withania somnifera-derived triterpenoid, is an anticancer natural product. The anticancer effect of nonionizing radiation such as ultraviolet-C (UVC) as well as the combined treatment of UVC and WFA is rarely investigated. Low dose UVC and/or WFA treatments (12 J/m2 and/or 1 μM) were chosen to evaluate antioral cancer cell line effects by examining cytotoxicity, cell cycle disruption, apoptosis induction, and DNA damage. For two cancer cell lines (Ca9-22 and HSC-3), single treatment (UVC or WFA) showed about 80% viability, while a combined treatment of UVC/WFA showed about 40% viability. In contrast, there was noncytotoxicity to normal oral cell lines (HGF-1). Compared to single treatment and control, low dose UVC/WFA shows high inductions of apoptosis in terms of flow cytometric detections for subG1, annexin V, pancaspase changes as well as Western blotting for detecting cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (c-PARP) and caspase 3 (c-Cas 3) and luciferase assay for detecting Cas 3/7 activity. Low dose UVC/WFA also showed high inductions of oxidative stress and DNA damage in terms of flow cytometric detections of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial superoxide (MitoSOX) generation, and membrane potential (MitoMP) destruction, γH2AX and 8-oxo-2’deoxyguanosine (8-oxodG) types of DNA damages. For comparison, low dose UVC/WFA show rare inductions of annexin V, Cas 3/7 activity, ROS, MitoSOX, and MitoMP changes to normal oral HGF-1 cells. Therefore, low dose UVC/WFA provides a novel selectively killing mechanism to oral cancer cells, suggesting that WFA is a UVC sensitizer to inhibit the proliferation of oral cancer cells.

This study investigated the effects of mood state, issue involvement, and argument strength on responses to persuasive appeals. Through an unrelated second study paradigm, 144 introductory psychology students were randomly assigned to High or Low Issue Involvement, Happy or Sad Mood Inductions, and Strong or Weak Argument conditions. Attitudes, measured on 9-point Likert-type scales, and cognitive responses, measured through a thought listing, were assessed. On attitudes, people in the Happy Induction condition were equally persuaded by Strong and Weak Arguments, whereas people in the Sad Induction condition were persuaded by Strong, but not Weak, Arguments. Involvement had no effect. On the thought-listing measures, people in the Happy Induction condition showed modest elaboration. A stronger pattern of effects, consistent with high elaboration, was noted on the thought listings of people in the Sad Induction condition and who were in the High Involvement group. Interestingly, people in the Sad Induction condition who were in the Low Involvement group showed mood-congruency on thoughts. The data suggest that the effects of mood state are not moderated by the effects of issue Involvement on this measure of attitudes but that there may be some moderation on measures of elaboration. Implications and directions for research are discussed.

This work presents a one-dimensional magnetic chip composed of a hybrid magnetosensor and a readout circuit, which were fabricated with 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS technology. The proposed magnetosensor includes a polysilicon cross-shaped Hall plate and two separated metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) to sense the magnetic induction perpendicular to the chip surface. The readout circuit, which comprises a current-to-voltage converter, a low-pass filter, and an instrumentation amplifier, is designed to amplify the output Hall voltage with a gain of 43 dB. Furthermore, a SPICE macro model is proposed to predict the sensor’s performance in advance and to ensure sufficient comprehension of the magnetic mechanism of the proposed magnetosensor. Both simulated and measured results verify the correctness and flexibility of the proposed SPICE macro model. Measurements reveal that the maximum output Hall voltage VH, the optimum current-related magnetosensitivity SRI, the optimum voltage-related magnetosensitivity SRV, the averaged nonlinearity error NLE, and the relative bias current Ibias are 4.381 mV, 520.5 V/A·T, 40.04 V/V·T, 7.19%, and 200 μA, respectively, for the proposed 1-D magnetic chip with a readout circuit of 43 dB. The averaged NLE is small at high magnetic inductions of ±30 mT, whereas it is large at low magnetic inductions of ±30 G.

The efficiency of electrical machines carries a global impact because they fulfill about three-quarters of global electrical energy consumption. Its improvement requires a sound knowledge of energy loss properties of magnetic materials used in the core of electrical machines, especially non-conventional supply conditions, such as non-sinusoidal, high induction, alternating (1-D) and rotating (2-D) flux waveforms that have been posed with the incorporation of new electronic devices and materials in the systems. For these reasons, novel theoretical models and experimental techniques need to be developed to obtain the loss behavior under these complex flux regimes. To address these issues, experimental investigation and theoretical analysis have been carried out in this thesis on different magnetic materials and a wide ensemble of supply conditions. The aim of the theoretical analysis was to fill the gap between the physicists and the engineers by developing simple models that can be applied to compute the loss under realistic supply conditions. This theoretical frame is rooted in the physical principle of the separation of loss and the Statistical Theory of Loss (STL) by which the loss can be separated into the hysteresis, classical, and excess components. The concept of loss separation has been exploited under 1-D flux and extended to 2-D fluxes, where the relations between alternating and rotational losses have been obtained on a number of different materials, this analysis restricted to the region not influenced by skin effect. The proposed theoretical models have been tested by comparing loss figure of different magnetic materials over a wide range of frequencies, induction levels, and conventional or non-conventional supply conditions. To this purpose, loss characterization of non-oriented Fe-(3.2wt \%)Si steels have been performed using a three phase magnetizer able to generate 1-D and 2-D flux patterns, up to saturation magnetization. Fieldmetric and Thermometric methods have been applied at low and very high induction levels. Loss characterization of other non-oriented Fe-Si and low carbon steels have also been performed under 1-D flux at very low and high sinusoidal inductions using Epstein frame, single sheet tester or ring samples, over frequencies ranging from quasi-static conditions up to 10 kHz. Systematic uncertainties have been observed in measurements using a Single Sheet Tester due to MMF drop in flux closing yoke and a compensated Permeameter has been designed to reduce these uncertainties by compensating the MMF drop in the flux closing yoke.

Within this thesis the principle and application of induction heating will be introduced and the synthesis of magnetic materials, specifically ferrite type materials, via sol-gel methods reported. It is shown that the optimized ferrites demonstrated both excellent catalytic and induction heating properties which can be applied to various reactions. The reaction range can even be extended if magnetic materials are coated with other catalytically active components. Another possible solution which is discussed is the combination of induction heating of bulk metal materials which have been physically blended with an active catalyst. These inductively heated particles then transfer the reaction heat to the surrounding catalyst particles thereby assisting the reaction. The main example used is the oxidative ethylbenzene dehydrogenation reaction. This has been intensively studied over past number of decades as styrene is one of the most useful intermediate compounds for organic synthesis. The combination of induction heating with catalytically active magnetic materials will be introduced here and compared to traditional thermal heating. It will be shown that less deactivation was obtained under induction heating when using CoFe2O4 as a dual functional catalyst. The thesis concludes with an overall discussion and some personal views on potential future directions for this work.

One of the reasons linear motors, a technology nearly a century old, have not been adopted for a large number of linear motion applications is that they have historically had poor efficiencies. This has restricted the progress of linear motor development. The concept of a linear motor as a rotary motor cut and laid out flat with a conventional rotary motor control scheme as a design basis may not be the best way to design and control a high-speed linear motor. End effects and other geometry subtleties of a linear motor make it unique, and a means of optimizing efficiency with both the motor geometry and the motor control scheme will be analyzed to create a High-Speed Linear Induction Motor (LIM) with a higher efficiency than what is possible with conventional motors and controls. This thesis pursues the modeling of a short secondary type Double-Sided Linear Induction Motor (DSLIM) that is proposed for use as an Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) aboard the CVN-2 1. Mathematical models for the prediction of effects that are peculiar to DSLIM are formulated, and their overall effects on the performance of the proposed machine are analyzed.;3 |a(cont.) These effects are used to generate a transient motor model, which is then driven by a motor controller that is specifically designed to the characteristics of the proposed DSLIM. Due to this DSLIM's role as a linear accelerator, the overall efficiency of the DSLIM will be judged by the kinetic energy of the launched projectile versus the total electric energy that the machine consumes. This thesis is meant to propose a maximum possible efficiency for a DSLIM in this type of role.

Electric vehicles are a key technology in the reduction of our carbon footprint and this has motivated significant research interest. The electrical traction motor is one of the main areas of research in attempts to further improve electric vehicle performance. The permanent magnet motor is the predominant device in this application because of its high specific torque. However, it has suffered from market speculation in the raw magnet materials which has generated efforts to develop electrical machines which have a high specific torque and do not contain rare earth materials. In the past the induction motor used to be the preferred motor for electric vehicles due to its low costs, low maintenance requirements, mature technology and robustness. The induction motor requires a higher specific torque to make it an alternative to permanent magnet machines. For this reason, this research had the primary aim of improving the specific torque of induction machines by undertaking a detailed review of the motor design because this process has conventionally focussed on the requirements for industrial applications. The first stage of the work presented in this thesis consisted of identifying the designs already in use for this purpose and the potential technologies applicable to the induction motor that could be transferred from other electric traction machines. A full review of the design process was also conducted in order to identify the key areas of the process with special reference to the electromagnetic design which used finite element techniques as the main modelling tool. New induction motor designs were developed which showed potential for improving the specific torque; two of these were selected for further refinement, prototyping and testing. Although these designs were modified to facilitate construction, some major difficulties were still encountered during the prototype rotor manufacture. The test results were used to validate the design process and to identify further improvements in the designs. The issues encountered with the rotor manufacture prototype however lead to some overheating during the experimental testing. Comments about the design experience gained during this research are summarized including suggestions for further research.

The fields of nanomaterial and nanostructures are some of the fastest growing fields in material science today. Carbon nanotubes are at the forefront of these fields and their unique mechanical and electrical properties are of great interest to those working in multiple engineering fields. The overall objective of this study was to design and develop a new process and the equipment necessary, to synthesize carbon nanotubes using high voltage and a high-frequency induction field. This was the first time that a high voltage and an induction field have been used simultaneously in high yield production of carbon nanotubes. The source of carbon came from acetylene with cobalt used as the doping agent. The carbon was molded into carbon nanotubes by the high-voltage field. The carbon nanotubes were characterized using electron microscope techniques. Raman spectroscopy was also used to reveal the defects and graphitic structures of the carbon nanotubes.

The aim of this research project was to develop a vector controlled induction motor drive operating without a speed or position sensor but having a dynamic performance comparable to a sensored vector drive. The methodology was to detect the motor speed from the machine rotor slot harmonics using digital signal processing and to use this signal to tune a speed estimator and thus reduce or eliminate the estimator’s sensitivity to parameter variations. Derivation of a speed signal from the rotor slot harmonics using a Discrete Fourier Transform-based algorithm has yielded highly accurate and robust speed signals above machine frequencies of about 2 Hz and independent of machine loads. The detection, which has been carried out using an Intel i860 processor in parallel with the main vector controller, has been found to give predictable and consistent results duing speed transient conditions. The speed signal obtained from the rotor slot harmonics has been used to tune a Model Reference Adaptive speed and flux observer, with the resulting sensorless drive operating to steady state speed accuracies down to 0.02 rpm above 2 Hz (i.e. 60 rpm for the 4 pole machine). A significant aspect of the research has been the mathematical derivation of the speed bandwidth limitations for both sensored and sensorless drives, thus allowing for quantitative comparison of their dynamic performance. It has been found that the speed bandwidth limitation for sensorless drives depends on the accuracy to which the machine parameters are known and that for maximum dynamic performance it is necessary to tune the flux and speed estimator against variations in stator resistance in addition to the tuning mechanism deriving from the DFT speed detector. New dynamic stator resistance tuning algorithms have been implemented. The resulting sensorless drive has been found to have a speed bandwidth equivalent to sensored drives fitted with medium resolution encoders (i.e. about 500 ppr), and a zero speed accuracy of ± 8 rpm under speed control. These specifications are superior to any reported in the research literature.

This project investigates the use of a high speed, squirrel cage induction generator and power converter for producing DC electrical power onboard ships and submarines. Potential advantages of high speed induction generators include smaller size and weight, increased durability, and decreased cost and maintenance. Unfortunately, induction generators require a "supply of reactive power" to run and suffer from variation in output voltage and frequency with any changes to the input reactive power excitation, mechanical drive speed, and load. A power converter can resolve some of these issues by circulating the changing reactive power demanded by the generator while simultaneously controlling the stator frequency to adjust the machine slip and manage the real output power. This combination of real and reactive power control will ensure a constant voltage DC bus over the full load range. Tests were performed on a three horsepower motor to help validate models and simulations at both the two kilowatt and 5 megawatt level. After determining the equivalent circuit of the demonstration motor, it was tested as a generator under grid connected and capacitor excited conditions. A stand-alone five megawatt, 12,000 RPM generator designed specifically to operate at high efficiency and power factor over the full load rang was used to design converter parameters. A variety of reactive power excitation strategies were briefly examined before the flow of reactive currents through a converter was explained using a six step inverter with two different switching schemes.

In the next generation neutron sources the HLM (heavy liquid metals) such as lead, lead based eutectic alloys and mercury will be used both as spallation target material and simultaneously as the cooling liquid. In this aspect the design of safe and effective pumps for HLM recirculation at high pressure heads and big flow rates becomes important. For this purpose electromagnetic inductions pumps having no problems of hydraulic seals being in contact with liquid metal (electromagnetic forces in the liquid metal are induced by magnetic system located outside of the channel of pump) are more perspective from the point of view of their safety for operation at high temperature and radiation conditions in comparison with mechanical pumps. At the Institute of Physics of University of Latvia (IPUL) the design concept of electromagnetic induction pumps basing on the principle of rotating permanent magnets (PMP) have been developed. Such design concept of electromagnetic induction pumps has many advantages in comparison with traditionally used electromagnetic induction pumps basing on 3-phase linear flat or cylindrical inductors. The estimations of parameters of powerful pumps (such as overall dimensions of the active magnetic system, power of motor needed for pump drive, the efficiency of pump) for mercury for the developed by pump pressure heads in the range up to 10.0 bar and provided flow rates in the range up to 20 litres per second are demonstrated.

Plant-microbe interactions involve a large number of global regulatory systems, which are essential for plants to protect themselves against pathogen attack. An ethylene-inducing xylanase (EIX) of Trichoderma viride is a potent elicitor of plant defense responses, like hypersensitive response (HR), in specific cultivars of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). The central goal of this proposal was to investigate the molecular mechanisms that allow plants to specifically activate defense responses after EIX treatment. We proposed to identify cellular signaling components involved in the induction of HR by the EIX elicitor. The molecular genetic analysis of the signal transduction pathway that modulates hypersensitive responses is an important step in understanding the induction of plant defense responses. The genes that mediate LeEIX2-EIX dependent activation of resistance mechanisms remain to be identified. We used two approaches to identify the cellular signaling components that induce HR mediated by the EIX elicitor. In the first approach, we performed a yeast two-hybrid screening using LeEix2 as bait to identify plant proteins that interact with it. In the second approach, we used virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) for a high-throughput screen to identify genes that are required for the induction of LeEIX2-EIX mediated HR. VIGS will also be used for functional characterization of genes that will be identified during the yeast two-hybrid screen. This investigation will shed light on cellular processes and signaling components involved in induction of general plant defense against pathogens and will provide the basis for future biotechnological approaches to improve plant resistance to pathogens. Several genes were indentified by the two approaches. We used the VIGS and yeast two hybrid approaches to confirm that activity of the genes initially identified by different procedure. Two genes inhibit the induction of HR by the fungal elicitor in the different systems; Tobacco-Harpin binding protein 1 and cyclopropyl isomerase.

Systemic challenges for the Texas teacher workforce result from a large yearly demand for new teachers, exacerbated by high and climbing teacher attrition rates. As a result of these challenges, a large majority of new teachers are now hired before they complete preparation. Assigned disproportionately to students from low-income families and students of color, these less-prepared teachers are demonstrably less effective and less likely to stay than fully prepared teachers, stimulating further shortages. This study examines these conditions; describes the substantial work underway in Texas to address teacher shortages and stabilize the teacher workforce; and synthesizes evidence about policy interventions that can help address the key factors influencing workforce stability. These include investing in high-quality preparation models; reducing financial barriers to entry for teacher candidates; increasing teacher compensation; supporting improvements to teacher induction and working conditions; and improving state educator workforce data.

Following preliminary observations by one of the collaborating scientists on this project and the completion of a 1-year, BARD-supported feasibility study (IS-1908-90F), this 3-year BARD project has been executed. The main objectives of the research were to elucidate biochemical and pathological aspects of UV-induced resistance in fruits and vegetables, to characterize physical and biological variables of induced resistance and delay of ripening, and to explore the application of the treatment as a control practice of postharvest diseases and shelf-life extension of fruits and vegetables. Our findings, which are detailed in numerous joint publications, have shown that the effect of UV-C light on induction of resistance and delay of ripening is a general one and of wide oddurrence. Apart from surface sterilization of the commodity, the reduction of decay of different fungi has been associated with and induced resistance phenomenon which gradually builds up within 24 to 48 hours after the UV treatment and can be reversed by visible light. In citrus, induced resistance has been associated with increased activity of the enzymes phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and peroxidase, and with the levels of endglucanase and chitinase. In tomato, resistance was correlated with the production of high levels of tomatine. Our study of some molecular aspects of the induced resistance in grapefruit has revealed the induction of a cDNA which represents a gene encoding for an isoflavone reductase-like protein that, in legumes, has been associated with phytoalexin biosynthesis. This gene was cloned and sequenced. Delay of ripening was associated in tomato with inhibition of ethylene production, carotenoid synthesis, and chlorophyll degradation and with the presence of high levels of polyamines. In peach fruit epiphytic populations of a yeast increased following the UV treatment. Pilot-size treatment and packing lines were constructed in the US and Israel to test the application of the UV treatment on a semi-commercial scale. Although effective in reduction of decay and delay of ripening, a number of problems will have to be addressed before practical application of this methodology can be realized. The main issues are associated with the temporal and variable response to the treatment, and its relationship to the maturity and date of harvest of the commodity.
