Abstract Makino, M., and Sakurai, Y. 2012. Adaptation to climate-change effects on fisheries in the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage area, Japan. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: . In the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage area, many factors have been observed that imply effects of climate change on ecosystems, such as decreases in seasonal sea ice, changes in fishing grounds, and the appearance of non-local species. This study summarizes observed and anticipated effects of such climate change on fisheries in the heritage area and discusses policy and research needs for adapting to these changes. International research and monitoring at the scale of large marine ecosystems (LMEs) is the basis of all policy measures for adapting to climate change. Several measures need to be combined, taking into account the various socio-ecological aspects of fisheries and scales of ecosystems. Such measures of adaptation should be incorporated also into the cross-sector coordination system and the Integrated Management Plan, which were established to manage the World Heritage area. Also, culture is an important part of society, and the World Heritage programme may offer clues for creating a new and peaceful culture based on the LME.

Created by David Simon in 2002, the HBO series The Wire presents the established moral code of a society that lies outside mainstream America and depicts institutions designed to maintain the status quo. Terry Eagleton suggests of Dickens, that his ‘grotesque realism is a stylistic distortion in the service of truth, a kind of astigmatism which allows us to see more accurately.’ The content of Simon's programme operates in a similar way. It proposes an alternative to academic narratives able to disseminate knowledge beyond the closed-off world of peer review. The richness, uniqueness and intricacy of The Wire has made it difficult to trace its thematic and stylistic heritage. The programme has been referred to as a ‘lyrical sociology’, ‘a type of urban sociology’, ‘a rendering of urban theory’, a ‘fontless social science’, a ‘theoretical archetype’, a ‘Dickensian show’, and more. At an aesthetic level, The Wire has been qualified as a work of ‘psychological realism’, ‘social realism’, as something aspiring to Fredric Jameson's aesthetics of ‘cognitive mapping’, or even a ‘rich counterpart to actor-network-theory’.

Abstract The paper presents the research project coordinated by the University of Warsaw and financed by the Minister of Science and Higher Education as part of the “Tradition 1a” module of the National Programme for the Development of Humanities. The main task of this research project is the documentation of the Jesuit music repertory produced and disseminated on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The results of the project work will be published in a new editorial series, which will include catalogues of sources and music iconography, monographs, databases and critical editions of music-related sources of Jesuit provenience. The publications will appear in print and on-line. The expected research results will serve not only musicologists, but also representatives of other fields of humanities. The work of the international research team is hoped to restore to the national heritage the forgotten monuments of Jesuit musical culture and should lead to a reliable assessment of their historical value. The results of the research of the international team of scientists will influence the present-day sense of identity of the countries which in the past jointly formed the literary culture our Commonwealth.

South Africa's academic publishing history has been profoundly influenced by its colonial heritage. This is reflected in the publication of Transactions of the South African Philosophical Society (later, the Royal Society of South Africa) from 1878. Although the Society and journal sought to promote original research about South Africa, it was modelled after the Royal Society in London and formed part of an imperial scientific community. As the local higher education institutions grew more independent and research-focused, local scholarly publishing developed as well, with university presses playing an increasingly important role. The University of South Africa (Unisa) Press started publishing departmental journals in the 1950s, with a focus on journals that ‘speak to the student’, and it is today the only South African university press with an active journals publishing programme. As external funding declined and the country became intellectually isolated in the high apartheid period, the Press managed to attract journals that could no longer be subsidized by learned societies and other universities. More recently, new co-publishing arrangements have brought South African journals back into an international intellectual community. Although some argue that this constitutes a re-colonization of South African knowledge production, it is also an innovative strategy for positioning local research in a global context.

The programme for a revitalization of Africa through the New Partnership for Africa?s Development (NEPAD) project is determined by the need of the African continent to overcome its historic heritage and a rather unfavourable current situation, and to become part of the globalisation processes that had spread throughout the world in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. After a brief clarification of the terminology included in the very title of the above project, the author identifies and analyses the important characteristics of the current situation in the continent, which has been and still is conditioned by the marginalisation and isolation of the continent from the main streams and processes that had been expanding throughout the world over the past decades. Assessing that the underdevelopment and poverty are the essence of the problem, the subliming factor of all other negative trends and the main cause of the continent?s marginalisation in the world?s economic, political and civilizational developments, the main point of the analysis is actually focused on finding the causes of this situation. In that context, the legitimacy of colonialism, the consequences of the globalisation process in the African continent, the link between domestic and external factors in the cause-and-effect connection with the negative development of the continent are being analysed. The analysis of the important factors of the present and the future of the continent includes and identifies the historic and current advantages of the continent, which are also the realistic foundation on which the revitalization project rests on, such as natural and human resources and the richness of Africa?s culture, which has largely contributed to the diversity of the global cultures. In the section on the contents and objectives of the programme for a revitalization of Africa, the author points out several essential characteristics, underlining that the programme is a part of the African leaders themselves, that it is the authentic product of their awareness that without their own responsibility for the fate of Africa?s peoples the problems that those countries are faced with will not be overcome. Since the purpose of the programme for a revitalization is to include the continent in the globalisation processes its implementation depends directly on the support and assistance of the international community and the international agencies and organizations particularly of the African Development Bank, the World Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Namely, the global partnership for Africa?s development is directly correlated with the preservation of the global stability. A continuation of Africa?s marginalisation in the globalisation process would be a serious threat to both the world stability and the globalisation process itself, which would be incomplete without the inclusion of all of the world countries. With an identification and analysis of the main priorities of the Programme and of the mechanisms and responsibilities for its implementation, the author concludes that NEPAD?s implementation will be successful only if it becomes the property and a true concern not only of the leaders but also of all African peoples united in their diversity. The author analyses the historic and current external and internal factors that had caused the present situation in the continent, and identifies the potential natural, human and other resources. The programme for a revitalization also encourages the raising of self-consciousness of the segments of society at large about the realistic potentials of the African peoples, thus gaining also a mobilizing character. The author believes that the drawing up of the Plan of Action and its inclusion in the Programme is a rather positive side of the programme for a revitalization assessing it as a strategic mechanism for obtaining sustainable development in the 21st century. The Plan of Action identifies establishment of peace and stability, democratisation of the systems in African countries and formation of uncorrupted and competent governments, that would work in the interest of the people and not in the interest of certain groupings or individuals, as important conditions for the implementation of the strategy. The author also points out the basic sector priorities that the Plan of Action stipulates: overcoming infrastructural differences between certain sectors, investing in information and communication technologies development of electric power supply industries, transport and water supply. The development of human resources implies a poverty reduction, advancement of education system, upgrading of intellectual elite, development of health systems, agriculture, culture, science and technology. In the section on "Controversies, challenges and problems in the process of programme realization," the author tries to consider the Programme? vision, contents and objectives within the milieu of Africa?s present reality and the main development tendencies in the international scene, which would to a large degree determine the frameworks, scope and results of the Programme?s attainment in practice. In view of the diversity of cultures and traditions beliefs and religions, different historic heritage, and with this different external influences, disproportionate degree of economic and overall social development, conflicts within and among certain states, the tradition of unconstitutional rulers and rules, corruption and a series of other factor the author concludes that the project, basically substantial and progressive, will be faced with a number of challenges, dilemmas and difficulties, which would make its implementation uncertain, inconsistent and time-consuming.

This article is based on the library reseach using an analysis content. This research is trying to analyse an Islamic education based on Abdurrahman wahid or Gus Durs thought, before he was elected as the fourt President of RI periode, from 1970 to 1998. This essay is based on the text written by Gus Dur, whether in the form of books, articles, newspaper section and any other types of the text , and also the papers from other figures who tried to interprete his thought. Based on Abdurrahman Wahid, the unclear national education direction programmed by the government - since colonial period until the reform era , that did not eliminate the colonial era heritage - is to create "kelas kerani". This class featured an alternative education concept with Paulo Freire and Ivan Illich as the figure with their oppressive education system as the main concept or the domination of strong people to the weak people. Based on Gus dur, the alternative education proposed by Paulo Friere still has the weaknesses in the approach used. It is still political in the confrontative context to the ruler. Therefore, this can make the confrontation against the ruler. This is not appropiate with the Indonesian society character who are not easy to accept the paradigm the confrontation between the have and the have not. Thus, Gus Dur offered an alternative education with the cultural approach represented by Islamic Boarding School. Keywords: National Education, Islamic Education, Islamic Boarding

Abstract. The goal of this study was to help cultural heritage administrators, curators and museum visitors apply their understanding and knowledge of artefacts in the museum and the correlations between their embedded contexts appropriately in their work and roles. This study developed the Artefact Data Management Programme and the Artefact Data Visualisation Programme specialised in cultural heritage so people can quickly and easily access the desired information through the correlations between artefacts. The Artefact Data Management Programme combines a Windows-based data converter programme and an artefact management programme that can import and utilise the files converted by the programme. Through the Artefact Data Management Programme, users can enter, modify and delete sub-attributes to manage them. Moreover, this study also allows curators to plan exhibitions from a new perspective through the Artefact Data Visualisation Programme, which converts the entered attribute information of the artefacts into visualised content and edits it. Incidentally, visitors who are non-experts can also understand the relationship between artefacts and learn information through this webpage. In conclusion, the ultimate goal of this study was to produce useful programmes that could help museum stakeholders to edit and utilise cultural heritage data.

North-West Europe has a rich cultural heritage which is increasingly prone to impacts from development activities. This paper reports the findings of the "Planarch" study funded by the European Regional Development Fund Interreg IIIB programme. Overall, whilst there are examples of good practice, cultural heritage has a relatively low profile in EIA in the countries studied. Nevertheless, cultural heritage is important and makes wider contributions to society beyond its intrinsic value. Therefore, the profile of cultural heritage needs to be raised both within the planning process and EIA, and also in the minds of decision-makers, other specialists and the wider public. Ten guiding principles provide a first step in promoting the assessment of cultural heritage in EIA, and also to build the consideration of cultural heritage into more strategic planning decisions through SEA.

The ideals of tolerance and cultural exchange associated with the interfaith past of Muslim Spain (al-Andalus) have become a symbol for Andalusian regionalism and for the integration of Moroccan communities. Nowhere is this more keenly felt than in the context of music. In cities such as Granada, Moroccan and Spanish musicians actively promote the ideals of intercultural dialogue through the performance of repertoires such as flamenco and Arab-Andalusian music that allegedly possess a shared cultural history. In this article, we examine the interrelationship between music and ‘intercultural regionalism’, focusing on how music is used by public institutions to ground social integration in the discourse of regionalism. Against a backdrop of rising Islamophobia and the mobilization of right-wing populist and anti-immigration rhetoric both within Spain and internationally, the authors consider how music can be used to promote social integration, to overcome Islamophobia and to tackle radicalization. We advance two arguments. First, we argue that the musical interculturalism promoted by a variety of institutions needs to be understood within the wider project of Andalusian regionalism. Here, we note that musical integration of Spain’s cultural and historical ‘Other’ (Moroccans) into Andalusian society is promoted as a model for how Europe can overcome the alleged ‘death of multiculturalism’. The preferential way to achieve this objective is through ‘intercultural regionalism’, envisioned as the combination of regional identity-building and intercultural interactions between communities that share a common cultural heritage. Second, we assess some of the criticism of the efficacy of al-Andalus as a model for contemporary intercultural exchange. Combining approaches in political science and ethnomusicology, we focus on one case study, the Fundación Tres Culturas (FTC). Through interviews with figures within the FTC, we examine why this model has become partly insufficient and how it is borne out in the sorts of musical activities programmed by FTC that seek to move beyond the ‘andalusí’ myth. We conclude by recognizing the continuing regional and international importance of this myth but we question its integrating capacity at a time of radical political, economic and environmental upheaval.

Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Recently, Participatory action research (PAR) has become a common approach to social programmes in South Africa. This tendency has created a need to evaluate this kind of programmes to determine if it really achieves what it sets out to do. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an entrepreneurial skills training programme in a rural community where a participatory action research approach was followed. A literature review was undertaken to present an in-depth look into the body of literature that surrounds the study. Programme evaluation was discussed as a research design, including types and stages of evaluation. The concept of empowerment was investigated. The review also included a study of literature on PAR, especially the definitions, context and process of PAR. The role of entrepreneurship in rural development was also investigated as well as the evaluation of entrepreneurial skills training programmes. An entrepreneurial skills training programme was implemented in the rural town of Darling on the West Coast of South Africa. The PAR approach was followed in the implementation of the study that was conducted over a period of 15 months. Participants joined the programme that included different projects, voluntarily. The participants were divided into three groups according to their period of participation in the programme. The researcher facilitated actions as well as reflection meetings with the group of participants before and after the entrepreneurial skills training course. The researcher made field notes during the implementation of the programme. The participants' empowerment status was measured with a standardized questionnaire using a pre-test-post-test design. The participants' application of the entrepreneurial skills that were taught in the course was measured during semi-structured interviews at the end of the research perico. four case studies document the extremes of the respective outcomes of the programme, namely empowerment and entrepreneurship. Statistical analysis showed statistically significant improvements in the micro, macro and total empowerment scores of the total group. Looking at the three groups separately, group one showed statistically significant improvements on the micro and interface levels and group two on the micro level. Even though group three showed small improvements on all three levels, none of them were statistically significant. Data from the field notes wer:e analyzed according to the PAR concepts of participation, action and reflection. Participation mostly had a collaborative nature; action was aimed at economical change and reflection aimed at practical problem solving. The interviews revealed that 20 of the 24 participants had micro baking businesses at the end of the research period and they succeeded in the short-term goal of applying the skills that were taught in the course. The case studies showed no correlation between the participants' application of entrepreneurial skills and the changes in their empowerment status. The findings of the study suggest that the longer participants participate in a PAR programme, the bigger the improvement in their empowerment status will be. Monitoring of the implementation revealed that the study fell short of the "ideal type" of PAR, since participation was not yet collegiate. Actions were only effective in economic change and not in social transformation. Reflection resulted in limited critical self-awareness among the participants. The PAR approach has proven to be successful in the attainment of the short-term goals of an entrepreneurial skills training programme. The long-term sustainability of the entrepreneurs' businesses will have to be followed-up by further research.
Programevaluering, insluitende tipes and stadia van evaluering, is bespreek as 'n navorsingsontwerp.

This ethnography tracks a diverse set of scientific practices that have developed new technologies for the conservation of artworks and cultural heritage. I examine how scientists in physics, chemistry, and biology have intervened in the restoration of artifacts ranging from faded abstract expressionist paintings to the crumbling clay terraces of an archaeological site. Reporting on archival research, interviews, and participant-observation, I juxtapose three case studies in the U.S. and Italy-two in which physics (Cambridge, MA) and chemistry (Florence) are conscripted into the realm of high modem art, and another in which biological knowledge (Milan) informs the preservation of artistic tradition and craft heritage.
In analyzing interventions in digital projection technology (light), nanotechnology (colloids), and biotechnology (microbes), I argue that scientists today transform artifacts of culture into instances of technoscientific nature through what I call the "technoscientific re-enchantment of art." Aura, philosopher Walter Benjamin once wrote, is the ineffable and singular charisma that confirms an artwork as "the original." He added that technological reproducibility through film and photography strips art of its ritualistic authority, liberating it of the fetish of authenticity. To the contrary, I find, technology today is enlisted as a mode of authenticity's material production. Art's aura, in the age of technoscientific reenchantment, does not disappear but rather, is re-valued through analogy-analogies made through the discursive and material practices that liken light to paint, the colloidal substance of the human body to that of artworks, and microbes to patina.
Laboratory scientists, I show, are recasting the materials of art and heritage to make the terms of their recovery amenable to technoscientific mediation. In so doing, scientists contribute to enduring ethical debates within art history and heritage preservation-debates about how to interpret an artist's intent and an object's pristineness or historicity. Finally, I explore a fourth field site, the Vatican Museums, as a framing device for understanding the stakes in contemporary conservation practice. Drawing on the anthropology of art and heritage, science and technology studies, and art history, I explore the multiple, ever-changing claims of technoscientific expertise over matters of the materiality, aesthetics, and history of artifacts.

This research investigates the dynamics of the on-going conflict in the state–civil society partnership in South Korea. In recent decades, partnership has become a central strategy for welfare provision worldwide. In accordance with this trend, the Korean government has invited numerous civil society organisations to become local welfare agencies. The workfare programme (called the SSP) is a typical example of such partnerships. Because a large number of anti-poverty organisations have become frontline SSP Centres, the SSP is widely regarded as an icon of participatory welfare. However, contrary to the ideals of democratic governance, some critical studies have argued that collaboration with the state can render civil society agencies susceptible to state demands, gradually undermining their role as advocates for disadvantaged people. In light of such claims, this study has explored the actual politics of the SSP partnership by: 1) analysing policy documents; 2) conducting interviews with 42 actors in the SSP system; and 3) observing a Centre. This research confirms that partnership does not always guarantee a democratic relationship. SSP Centres have gradually been subjected to state intervention, and their open confrontation with the state has evidently abated. Yet SSP Centres have not completely lost their autonomy and spirit of resistance: rather, they have adopted informal and unofficial forms of resistance while maintaining apparent conformity with the state. These street-level activities constitute SSP Centres’ emancipatory role in defending the life-world of poor people against the capitalist state. The implication of this study for the politics of partnership is that current forms of state–civil society partnership need not entail the ‘mutual coproduction’ or the ‘complete co-option’ of civil society to the state. Partnership can be a site of ‘complex struggles’ where civil society actors continue to counteract the control of the dominant system in inflected ways.

Indian coast has been charted and mapped extensively by various European colonisers such as Portuguese, Dutch, British, and French, since the 16th century, for the purpose of navigation, guiding safe landing, and also for political and military interests. These maps and charts often depict geomorphic features such as shoals, lagoons, and coastlines, along with historical sites as landmarks. However, the geomorphic and archaeological content in these early cartographic documents is mostly unexplored and/or undervalued. The present study has explored and critically evaluated these early maps with the following objectives – 1) to provide a methodology to integrate information from the historical sea- charts, maps, paintings and satellite images using GIS to derive meaningful geomorphic and archaeological information; 2) to explore the usability of historical maps in the investigation of the lost or unidentified archaeological features with respect to the dynamic shoreline; and 3) to advance the understanding of the long-term (few centuries) coastal geomorphology. The study has made original contributions by highlighting the richness and potential of these early maps in advancing the archaeological and geomorphic understanding; this has been achieved by developing and demonstrating a coherent methodology through integrating knowledge, concepts, and methods from different associated disciplines (i.e., remote sensing, GIS, cartography, archaeology, and geomorphology). Generally, geospatial analysis of coastline changes is limited to the period of availability of satellite images (last ~50 years). However, the present study demonstrates the ability and method to use historical maps and extend the spacio-temporal analysis of coastal areas to the last few centuries. The thesis has systematically used geomorphic information from early maps to identify archaeological sites and the location of archaeological sites as a reference to understand long-term (past few centuries) coastal geomorphic processes. More specifically, the present work led to finding hitherto unexplored archaeological remains of colonial forts on coasts of Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. The study also helped in understanding and dating the long-term dynamics of spits of central Kerala, the evolution of the Thamirabarani delta, and the formation of the Thoothukudi tombolo. The interdisciplinary approach used in this research has fetched multifaceted outcomes and pointed at directions for future research.

Urbanization has been studied almost from the middle of twentieth century by historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, sociologists and city planners. An urban center performs specialized functions with respect to the hinterland. In the process of urbanization relatively small settlements and simple communities develop into specialized centers and complex societies. In the case of studies of urbanization from an archaeological or historical standpoint, the major benchmarks often used to contextualize urbanization are location and size of settlements, monumental structures, art, script and coins. The issue of urbanization has been more widely explored in the case of northern India whereas it has been less well-studied with respect to Deccan and Karnataka in particular. Sannati (taluk Chittapura, district Gulbarga) is the principal site of enquiry. It is a Maurya-Satavahana settlement with some evidence for the megalithic age/iron age. Kanaganahalli and other adjacent sites such as Anegutti, Benagutti, Hasargundgi are well endowed with structural remains of Buddhist affiliation, particularly stupas. In this context the impact of prevailing ideological/religious beliefs on the contemporary socio-political order assumes importance. As may be inferred from Brahmi inscriptions, the Buddhist monastic classes and the paraphernalia depended upon the surplus which was perhaps being appropriated by the landed elite. In the context of early historic Karnataka it is also important to note that a brick structure, possibly a granary was located at Vadgaon-Madhvapur. The available inscriptions hint at the presence of an active elite who were interested in contributing towards the contemporary religious movements. There were several instances of donation. For instance, in the sixteenth reignal year of Chimukha Satavahana sculpted encasements were donated by a householder Tokhisa. The extremely rich and varied antiquities along with fine sculptures, complex structures are suggestive of the fact that material culture had attained maturity specially with respect to the antecedent cultures. Here the contribution of Mauryas and later the Satavahanas becomes important as they introduced new cultural traits which were adopted by the local communities in their day-to-day life. They had spread into Karnataka from outside but seem to have played a crucial role in facilitating the transition from proto-historic to the early historic. Trade and maritime contacts with the Roman world also provided impetus towards urbanization. In the early centuries of Christian era there were definite indications of social complexity and establishment of a political order and this constituted trends and patterns which seem to have met the yardsticks of urbanization. These yardsticks of urbanization can be identified in North Karnataka, particularly at Sannati around the beginning of Christian era, even when seen in comparison to other early historic landscapes in northern India and the Deccan.

The relation between science and society has become increasingly important in scientific institutions and there is a growing concern about the engagement of society with science and with promoting the dialogue between them. Under the internship held at the Science Communication office of the Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme at the Champalimaud Foundation, it was developed a science communication project: “Communicate (Neuro)Science: From the street to the lab and from the lab to the street”. The main goal of the project was to engage the public and promote the dialogue between scientist and society, based on the model of Public Engagement with Science (PES). The project “Communicate (Neuro)Science: From the street to the lab and from the lab to the street” was divided into two different phases: Phase I - From the street to the lab and Phase II- From the lab to the street. In Phase I - From the street to the lab, was done a survey of the questions that the public would like to ask neuroscientists, through interviews on the street that allowed the production of contents and activities based on the interests of the society. In Phase II – From the lab to the street, were produced videos in which scientist respond to questions that been made by the public, and also were planned workshops that were into the interests of the public. Briefly, there were made 100 interviews and identified the most often mentioned issues by the public – memory, emotions, morphology and function of the brain, and the myth of using 10% of the brain- and these ones served as a basis to produce the content and plan the workshops. This document is divided into four chapters. The theoretical framework and context of the problem are made in the first chapter, with the presentation of the different science communication paradigms, the relation between society and research units, in particular, the connection between society and neuroscience. In the second chapter is detailed the activities of the CNP Science Communication office and the contribution made during the internship, including the writing of press releases, participation in public events and also school visits. The third chapter is dedicated to the project “Communicate (Neuro)Science: From the street to the lab and from the lab to the street” and its two phases. Finally, in the fourth chapter is presented a balance of the project that was developed. AbstractCitizen humanities is the term for citizen ‘science’ in the humanities. It has a long tradition and, since the object of investigation is human culture, raises questions about values, cultural significance, and deeper meaning of phenomena related to human culture. The development of digital technologies not only led to the emergence of digital humanities but also to new ways of involving citizens in the activities of cultural heritage institutions and academic research. Participants’ contributions to academic research and to the preservation of cultural heritage range from uncovering treasures hidden in archives and digital environments to tapping local knowledge. Their tasks have included tagging, transcribing, or cataloguing artefacts, through which they acquire specialist knowledge and competences, while assisting scholars and researchers to gain new insights. Challenges in the citizen humanities include biases, participant training and retention, as well as the advancement of digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence.Citizen humanities can combine topical issues in society with academic knowledge, demonstrate the relevance of the humanities for society, and establish a direct link to its members. In addition to the advancement of knowledge, the citizen humanities can unlock the potential of embedded, diverse, and culturally sensitive knowledge and play a crucial role in preserving and enriching cultural heritage.

AbstractAn ‘inclusive citizen science’ practice encourages engagement from all members of society, whatever their social status, sociocultural origin, gender, religious affiliation, literacy level, or age. In this chapter we will first address the question of inclusiveness in citizen science and how this is tackled. We will analyse the current situation of a number of projects and initiatives within the Citizen Science COST Action CA15212 and the Horizon 2020 SwafS programme, examine the data, and discuss the main factors that encourage or hinder inclusiveness. We will offer recommendations for a possible plural participation in citizen science activities and reflect on how research is improved when diverse citizens are used as in-the-field experts. We will demonstrate how research questions can be fine-tuned and how research impacts are enhanced through citizen participation, with a focus on gender representation. Bottlenecks can occur when considering inclusiveness in citizen science, including in data interpretation, tasks that require long-term participation, and tasks that have specific language and intermediation requirements.

AbstractAfter a period in which Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) stood as a cross-cutting issue under the Eigth European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (R & I), Horizon 2020, its further development and implementation has reached a crossroad. It turned out that there is a lack of consistent integration of RRI in Europe’s R & I practices (Novitzky et al. 2020), and dedicated funding for RRI is almost entirely absent in the Ninth European Union Framework Programme for R & I, Horizon Europe. At the same time, global challenges like climate change become increasingly more urgent and thus continue to call for collective efforts of scientific research and industry, policy makers and civil society. Further, the emergence of disruptive technologies like synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and robotics raises several new societal concerns. Finally, the growing disbelief in science, as shown during the Corona pandemic, demonstrates the importance of aligning R & I policy and societal values all the more. For reasons as these, the disinvestment in a dedicated Science With and For Society programme line for RRI in Horizon Europe did not result in decreased academic attention for embedding science in society. On the contrary, a dedicated research community emerged that engages in the academic discourse of RRI and tries to contribute to projects on topics such as responsible data governance, responsible AI, and responsible agroecology within the Horizon Europe framework programme, sometimes even without the use of the frame RRI.

AbstractThe fields of Big Data, Data Analytics and Data Science, which are key areas of current and future industrial demand, are quickly growing and evolving. Within Europe, there is a significant skills gap which needs to be addressed. A key activity is to ensure we meet future needs for skills and align the supply of educational offerings with the demands from industry and society. In this chapter, we detail one step in this direction, a programme to recognise Data Science skills. The chapter introduces the data skills challenge and the importance of formal and non-formal education. It positions data skills within a framework for skills and education, and it reviews key projects which have advanced the data skills agenda. It then introduces recognition frameworks for formal and non-formal Data Science training, and it details a methodology to achieve consensus between interested stakeholders in both academia and industry, and the platforms needed to be deployed for the proposal. Finally, we present a case study of the application of recognition frameworks within an online educational portal for students.

AbstractSince the adoption of the World Heritage Convention (1972), modern technologies have significantly changed the way our society behaves and operates, with an increased demand for energy, fast and reliable communications, etc. Some modern technologies might contribute to negative impacts on heritage sites, e.g. through climate change and/or excessive tourism; however, modern digital technologies can also be extremely beneficial for heritage activities. In this paper, we focus on how modern digital geo-science and geo-technology can support heritage authorities’ daily work. We introduce herein the concept of digital Geoheritage, which can help heritage authorities to discover and understand the enormous benefits that geomatics can provide for their daily heritage activities. This research case, implemented through an interdisciplinary scientific approach, originally aimed to support the preservation, restoration and management of a cultural heritage site; however, it was later expanded to also support archaeological research, stability risk assessment, planning, design, education, dissemination and promotion. The use of digital geo-sciences for the benefit of the local Maya communities living around a heritage site is also illustrated. Our objective, within the current book, was to present a paper that is oriented toward heritage authorities, and, therefore, technical language has been avoided.

In a flourishing knowledge society, the communication of information is rapidly changing and, at the level of academic library this is possible through electronic services and digital collection. The informational growth in all the expertise fields, especially in science and culture, its coding in digital form, is a reflection of deep transformations in innovation at national scale and also worldwide. The mix of technology with print culture and science helps the heritage preservation and also provide open access to the scientific community. Digitization of library collections transforms the teaching, learning, researching and moreover the manner in which people interact. The present paper is an insight over the concept of digital library, its evolution and especially its standpoints. Our approach intends to explore and reveal the reasons behind the digitization and also the effects and improvements on the community of library users. We aim to investigate the state of the art of digitization at global scale, the way it is reflected in the official documents, the evolution and barriers of this process in Romania, and the possible measures that must be taken for the future. "CAROL I" Central University Library reshaped its mission and objectives and designed the plan for e-services development in the digital economy age. Considering that Romania still lacks a coherent programme for digitization and the fact that open access is the fundamental right of individuals, we intend to outline the arguments for this process to be included in the public policies, as a measure for sustainable development. Only when knowledge will be provided trough hybrid services we will be able to speak about a modern management based on flexibility, adaptability, creativity in line with the evolution of communication and technological changes.

Community Schools Museums (COSMUS) is an initiative that has been developing an approach to school education from a perspective of multi-dimensional diversity, creativity and community involvement under the Erasmus+ programme in six different countries (Portugal, Greece, Italy, Romania, Poland and Turkey) and in different kinds of schools (arts, music, primary school, high school, VET).This initiative, relies on different educational and multicultural principles, such as the European Youth Charter on Inclusion and Diversity in Education or the European Education Area, and uses a combination of three dimensions that compose the new concept of Community School Museum. The first dimension refers to the local community in which each of the schools is located. This not only enhances concepts such as local traditions, society, or sense of belonging, but also connects with them and involves them in the school activity and curricula content. The second dimension is the school, where education curricula and physical space interact to support those types of knowledge that are essential to sustaining human development, using critical thinking, using creativity or cooperation to promote multicultural meanings. The third dimension is the museum, understood as a flexible tool acting as a communication channel (bi-directional), with elements that act as significance bearers. It uses the approach of learning by doing in order to learn to be, one of the four pillars of learning. It also employs the recommendations of the International Committee for Education and Cultural Action and applies the seven areas of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Results of the Community School Museum projects show a sound diversity of approaches, which points to the success of the methodology, given that diverse educational, social and cultural contexts give rise to diverse museum contents and designs. One of these results focuses on vernacular heritage.

The EPIQR method was developed between 1996 and 1998 within the framework of the European research programme JOULE II and with the support of the Swiss Federal Office for Education and Science. In its first versions, the EPIQR software and EPIQR+ that succeeded it, were desktop tools, allowing a precise diagnosis of the state of deterioration of an existing building and the elaboration of renovation scenarios including the different costs of the necessary works. However, deep refurbishment rate is still low. Climatic emergency state declared by most of the Swiss Cantons makes it necessary to search also for other strategies for urgent reduction of CO2 emissions. As part of the PRELUDE project, a web version of this tool has been developed to integrate both smart technologies and energy optimization actions. Some of them can be considered as soft actions, making it possible to develop a soft renovation roadmap for buildings that are not scheduled for renovation in the short term. As examples, the costs of optimization contracts, intelligent heating control, demand-controlled ventilation, abandonment of heat production from fossil fuels, integration of renewable energies into the building, and communities’ creation for self-consumption of photovoltaic production have now been modelled. Το help the residential building stock fit with the CO2 reduction of 60% by 2030 compliance and the “2000 W society” energy sobriety target by 2050, the EPIQR-WEB database includes the CO2 indirect emissions of each refurbishment action. Hence, this updated version enables the building diagnosis expert to evaluate and optimise deep refurbishment scenarios, from both financial and environmental point of view. Parallel calculation of CO2 indirect emissions with the calculation of refurbishment cost is done without extra time cost for the user. The paper will show the software new functions, the EPIQR-WEB database expansion and how its overall results can be used to meet the European Union Climate Target through a realistic and comprehensive investment plan.

Evidence Synthesis and Meta-Analysis for Drug Safety. Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.56759/lela7055.

At any point in the drug development process, systematic reviews and meta-analysis can provide important information to guide the future path of the development programme and any actions that might be needed in the post-marketing setting. This report gives the rationale for why and when a meta-analysis should be considered, all in the context of regulatory decision-making, and the tasks, data collection, and analyses that need to be carried out to inform those decisions. -- There is increasing demand by decision-makers in health care, the biopharmaceutical industry, and society at large to have access to the best available evidence on benefits and risks of medicinal products. The best strategy will take an overview of all the evidence and where it is possible and sensible, combine the evidence and summarize the results. For efficacy, the outcomes generally use the same or very similar predefined events for each of the trials to be included. Most regulatory guidance and many Cochrane Collaboration reviews have usually given more attention to assessment of benefits, while issues around combining evidence on harms have not been as well-covered. However, the (inevitably) unplanned nature of the data on safety makes the process more difficult. -- Combining evidence on adverse events (AEs), where these were not the focus of the original studies, is more challenging than combining evidence on pre-specified benefits. This focus on AEs represents the main contribution of the current CIOMS X report. The goal of the CIOMS X report is to provide principles on appropriate application of meta-analysis in assessing safety of pharmaceutical products to inform regulatory decision-making. This report is about meta-analysis in this narrow area, but the present report should also provide conceptually helpful points to consider for a wider range of applications, such as vaccines, medical devices, veterinary medicines or even products that are combinations of medicinal products and medical devices. -- Although some of the content of this report describes highly technical statistical concepts and methods (in particular Chapter 4), the ambition of the working group has been to make it comprehensible to non-statisticians for its use in clinical epidemiology and regulatory science. To that end, Chapters 3 and 4, which contain the main technical statistical aspects of the appropriate design, analysis and reporting of a meta-analysis of safety data are followed by Chapter 5 with a thought process for evaluating the findings of a meta-analysis and how to communicate these.
