Abstract Best known today for his writings about the American West, which he visited over twenty-five times between 1885 and 1920, Owen Wister was remarkably versatile, a poet, dramatist, essayist, novelist of manners, journalist, book critic, biographer and historian, satirist, and author of children's books. This bibliography of his writings increases by over half, to over 250, the number of items Wister is known to have published, including several schoolboy exercises contributed to his prep school newspaper and the Harvard Crimson, many prefaces or introductions to books by his friends, and memoirs of his lifelong friend and Harvard classmate Theodore Roosevelt.

Benjamin Buchloh speaks with German artist, musician, and critic Jutta Koether about the many ways in which Koether blurs the lines between painting and performance in her practice, “reinstalling,” in her words, painting as a “platform, a potential, [and] a performance.” Koether discusses the formative role of New Wave and punk culture in her practice, particularly her time at Spex magazine; her studies in Cologne in the late 1970s and the anti-aesthetic impulse in painting from Picabia to Polke to Kippenberger; and her time in New York in the late 1980s and ′90s. Special attention is paid to her relationship to Poussin, both in her paintings The Seasons and The Sacraments and in her performance at Harvard in April 2013, as well as to early works like Inside Job (1992).

I was introduced to the term public intellectual almost twenty years ago when I was an undergraduate in a literary course on African American music taught by the cultural critic Farah Jasmine Griffin. The class conversations began with readings of jazz and hip-hop artists as “organic intellectuals” in the sense developed by Antonio Gramsci. We quickly moved to the debates sparked by Edward Said's Representations of the Intellectual (1993) and to the rise of the black public intellectual as demonstrated by the formation by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., of an academic “dream team” in African American studies at Harvard, Cornel West's publication of Race Matters (1994), and Robert Boynton's March 1995 article in the Atlantic entitled “The New Intellectuals,” which added Toni Morrison, Stanley Crouch, Patricia Williams, Michael Eric Dyson, Derrick Bell, June Jordan, and many others to that category. By the time I arrived at Harvard in 1999, for graduate study in African American literature, the idea of the black public intellectual served as a backdrop and a blueprint for how my generation of scholars could live inside and beyond the campus walls. As beneficiaries of that era, my peers and I did not necessarily have to prove that our work belonged in the public; instead, we had to wrestle with newer questions of format and forum in the digital age.

The British Library holds one of 65 existing copies of the first dated book printed in Muscovy by Ivan Fedorov and Petr Mstislavets, the Apostol (Acts and Epistles) (1564) and one of two known copies of Ivan Fedorov’s Primer (L’viv, 1574), which is considered by many to be the first Cyrillic book printed in Ukraine. The recent history of these books is linked to the name of the legendary Russian art critic and impresario Serge Diaghilev (1872–1929). Both titles belonged to his private book collection. A story of Diaghilev’s collection became part of the history of the British Library when in 1975 it acquired, among other books and manuscripts, his copy of the famous 1564 Apostol. Diaghilev’s copy of the 1574 Primer resurfaced at Harvard University Library, but its detailed descriptions and facsimile editions helped the British Library curator Christine Thomas, then in charge of the Russian collections, to identify a second copy, which is now held at the British Library. This article tells the story of how over 70 titles from Diaghilev’s collection of rare Russian books and manuscripts were acquired by the British Library, examines possible reasons for Diaghilev’s passion for books, and highlights other themes relevant for the history of private and public book collecting.

The reasons for counteracting the institutional development of Ukrainian studies in modern Ukraine, which still preserves the Soviet system of organization of communist-style science, further strengthened by its communist and post-communist functionaries, are analyzed. P. Kononenko’s reasoning that the phenomenon of synthesis of Ukrainian studies should be anthropology, and the generator of knowledge - the Institute of Man. The conclusions consider the achievements of the future, which include the causal conditionality of Ukrainian authenticity at each stage of the favorable historical development of the Ukrainian nation, determined by the functioning of statehood in the exercise of its protective function.

Historians and critics have maintained that Walter Gropius dominated the Harvard Graduate School of Design between 1937 and 1952 and shaped it into the "Harvard Bauhaus." My essay instead argues that the GSD was far more complex and rich than this assessment would suggest. Joseph Hudnut, who founded the school in 1936 and served as its dean until 1953, played an equally significant role at the GSD as he pursued an alternative to Gropius's modernism there. While Gropius demanded that the GSD follow the Bauhaus approach, Hudnut-influenced especially by John Dewey and by the German city planner Werner Hegemann-was trying to root modern architecture and the Harvard school in the larger humanistic traditions of architecture and civic design. By the mid-1940s, Hudnut and Gropius began battling for control of the GSD. At issue was the fact that Gropius wanted to rebuild the Bauhaus at Harvard while Hudnut absolutely did not want the school to be remade in this mold. In particular, Gropius was determined to establish a preliminary course at the GSD identical to the famous Bauhaus basic course. On the defensive, Hudnut fought Gropius at every turn.

‘Who profits from nonprofits?’ asked Herzlinger and Krasker in a recent Harvard Business Review article. Their study examined whether not-for-profit hospitals achieve the intended social goals for which they are subsidised by society. In this paper, we report a reconsideration of Herzlinger and Krasker's question. Using a larger data set and a different statistical method, our findings are at variance with those of Herzlinger and Krasker and in general agreement with their critics.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a major health concern for Americans and people worldwide. Arteriogenesis, an adaptive remodeling process in which pre-existing collateral arterioles remodel to form large diameter conductance arteries, has received recent attention for its therapeutic potential in treating CHD, but the mechanisms regulating the process remain incompletely understood. In particular, little is known about how collateral flow, and the resulting effect of shear stress acting along the collateral vessel wall, regulates coronary collateralization. This Thesis combines a series of experimental systems to define the responses evoked in endothelial cells exposed to hemodynamic waveforms characteristic of coronary collateral vessels and the subsequent paracrine effects on smooth muscle cells. Initially, a lumped parameter model of the human coronary collateral circulation was used to simulate normal (NCC) and adaptive remodeling (ACC) coronary collateral shear stress waveforms. These waveforms were then applied to cultured human endothelial cells (EC) and the resulting differences in EC gene expression were assessed by genome-wide transcriptional profiling, identifying genes distinctly regulated by collateral flow, including genes important for endothelial-smooth muscle interactions. In particular, the transcription factor KLF2 was upregulated by the ACC waveform and several of its downstream targets displayed the expected modulation, including the downregulation of Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). Moreover, delivery of endothelial conditioned medium generated throughout the collateral flow experiments to culture smooth muscle cells (SMC) resulted in the modulation of SMC genes related to vessel maturation and stabilization. In the second part of this Thesis, the effect of endothelial KLF2 expression on SMC migration was characterized using a 3D microfluidic assay capable of monitoring SMC migration in co-culture with EC. Using this 3D system, it was found that KLF2-expressing EC co-cultured with SMC significantly reduce SMC migration compared to control EC and that this reduction can be rescued by delivery of soluble CTGF.
(cont.) Collectively, these results demonstrate that the shear stress generated by collateral flow evokes distinct EC gene expression profiles and functional phenotypes that subsequently influence vascular events important for adaptive remodeling and provides experimental evidence supporting efforts directed at investigating endothelial KLF2 as a molecular target for therapeutic arteriogenesis.

The innate immune system is the first line of host defense, and its ability to propagate antimicrobial and inflammatory signals from the cellular microenvironment to the tissue at-large is critical for survival. In a remarkably complex microenvironment, cells are constantly processing external cues, initiating convoluted intracellular signaling cascades, and interacting with neighboring cells to generate a global, unified response. At the onset of infection or sterile injury, individual cells sense danger or damage signals and elicit innate immune responses that spread from the challenged cells to surrounding cells, thereby establishing an overall inflammatory state. However, little is known about how these dynamic spatiotemporal responses unfold. Through the use GFP reporters, in vitro transplant coculture systems, and in vivo models of infection and sterile injury, this thesis describes identification of a gap junction intercellular communication pathway for amplifying immune and inflammatory responses, and demonstrates its importance in host innate immunity. The first section describes development of stable GFP reporters to study the spatiotemporal activation patterns of two key transcription factors in inflammation and innate immunity: Nuclear factor-KappaB (NFKB) and Interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3). Stimulation of NFKB-GFP reporters resulted in a spatially homogeneous pattern of activation, found to be largely mediated by paracrine action of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNFa. In contrast, the activation of IRF3 was spatially heterogeneous, resulting in the formation of multicellular colonies of activated cells in an otherwise latent background. This pattern of activation was demonstrated to be dependent on cell-cell contact mediated communication between neighboring cells, and not on paracrine signaling. The second section describes the discovery of a gap junction intercellular communication pathway responsible for the formation of IRF3 active colonies in response to immune activation. Cell sorting and gene expression profiling revealed that the activated reporter colonies, collectively, serve as the major source of critical antimicrobial and inflammatory cytokines. Using in vitro transplant coculture systems, colony formation was found to be dependent on gap junction communication. Blocking gap junctions with genetic specificity severely compromised the innate immune system's ability to mount antiviral and inflammatory responses. The third section illustrates an application of the gap junction-induced amplification of innate immunity phenomenon in an animal model of sterile injury. Drug-induced liver injury was shown to be dependent on gap junction communication for amplifying sterile inflammatory signals. Mice deficient in hepatic gap junction protein connexin 32 (Cx32) were protected against liver damage, inflammation, and death in response to hepatotoxic drugs. Co-administration of a selective pharmacologic Cx32 inhibitor with hepatotoxic drugs significantly limited hepatocyte damage and sterile inflammation, and completely abrogated mortality. These finds suggests that co-formulation of gap junction inhibitors with hepatotoxic drugs may prevent liver failure in humans, and potentially limit other forms of sterile injury. In summary, this thesis demonstrates the development of novel tools for investigating the spatiotemporal dynamics of cellular responses, describes how these tools were utilized to discover a basic gap junction communication pathway critical in innate immunity, and provides evidence for the clinical relevance of this pathway in sterile inflammatory injury.

Matters of life and death—and the physician’s role—invite criticisms and alternate interpretations. Commentaries against the clinical diagnosis of brain death or the concept of brain death have shifted their focus. These range from criticisms of the Harvard Committee (alleging conflict of interest, as shown by the presence of transplant physicians), to clinical examination (alleging injury with the apnea test), to critiques of the total brain necrosis criteria (alleging intact pituitary and hypothalamic function), to critiques on the difficulty of support (alleging long-term support in pregnant “brain-dead” women and children) and, most recently, to critiques on irreversibility (alleging possible recoveries). Philosophical arguments may reach the bedside, which may become consequential. In this chapter, a fair assessment of these criticisms, particularly those regarding determination of brain death, is provided, followed by a rebuttal. Practitioners should be aware of the existing body of literature analyzed herein.

AbstractCultural Representations of Gender Vulnerability and Resistance: A Mediterranean Approach to the Anglosphere aims to fill a gap within Literary and Cultural Studies by undertaking the analysis of concepts such as vulnerability, resilience, precarity and resistance in a wide range of cultural texts written in English and published or circulated in the last two decades across a wide geography encompassing India, Ireland, Canada, the USA and the UK: memoirs and testimonies, films, TV series, crime fiction and literary fiction. Thus, the collection provides a rich array of cultural case studies to explore gender vulnerability in a transnational framework, in turn providing fresh insights into vulnerability itself as a “travelling theory,” following Edward Said’s formulation (The World, the Text, the Critic, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1983).

Even in the age of the imperial faculty and powerful professional schools, the College was at the center of Harvard’s sense of itself. This was evident in the two most significant events of the Pusey years: the great fund-raising effort of the late 1950s, pointedly called the Program for Harvard College; and the upheaval of 1969, in which the largest source of attention (and concern) was the degree to which Harvard undergraduates were involved. After the postwar rush of veterans, Harvard College during the 1950s appeared in many ways to return to its prewar state. Only about a quarter of the students in 1958 were on financial aid. The typical graduate five years out in the mid-fifties lived in a large northeastern city, was married with one child, was a Republican who went to church once a month. Most undergraduates sought to live up to their national billing as the elite of the elite. The dress-down clothing style of the postwar vets gave way to resurgent preppy attire: casually (that is, purposefully) dirtied white buckskin shoes, tweed jackets, green book bags, alpine parkas. “At a distance and even from quite close up,” said one observer, “everyone looks alike.” The prevailing social style was “polite arrogance—spare, dry, cautious, and angular.” Too cool by half, thought a critic: “Even in the unregimented student life of the Yard, there has been a certain failure of nerve, a hint of the youthful generation’s prudence.” The psychological downer of the Depression and the more mature post–World War II veterans temporarily squelched the venerable Harvard tradition of spring student riots. When there was talk of resurrecting that custom, a Radcliffe girl “sniffed scornfully: ‘What sort of riot is it when it has to be planned?’ ” Springtime hijinks returned in the 1950s with a younger, more affluent student body. These had a satirical, selfconscious edge, appropriate to a more intellectual student generation. The first rumpus came in May 1952 when students gathered to welcome cartoonist Walt Kelley, creator of the popular cartoon strip “Pogo.” Confusion and delay turned to streetcar disabling and fights with the police. In April 1961, protests raged through two unruly nights against the administration’s decision to switch to less costly printed diplomas—most inexcusably in English, not Latin.

Abstract The first quarter-century of Seldes’ life is fascinating for a range of instructive reasons. First, perhaps predictably, because the shaping of Seldes as a mature writer can so clearly be seen in his adolescence, his college experience, and his initial years as journalist and critic—covering World War I in particular. Even so, some striking shifts in his temperament and values must also be noted. Seldes’ life did not run along a smoothly guided monorail. For instance, the self-described cultural elitist at Harvard College (1910–14) became, within a decade, the most vocal American champion of popular culture. For the remainder of his entire career, Seldes would be widely recognized as a pioneering advocate for what he called the “lively” or popular arts.

Abstract He [Pericles] did not seek lo control, but rather yielded lo and regulated the irresistible current of the popular desire. No Athenian ever possessed so many qualities for obtaining great and lasting influence over the various classes of the citizens. Never has Alger been viewed as an author implementing a political project, steeped in the classics and the religion of the Harvard Unitarian moralists. Chapters and 3 establish the linkage between Alger s work in the classics, his religious training, and the agenda of his juvenilefiction. These connections illuminate his project for moral guidance through fiction in a way that has eluded supporters and critic salik en those who recognize his role as genteel moralist. The interests, values, and themes articulated in Alger s prize-winning essays at Harvard pervade his literary career.

Abstract Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Scotland, 1887-1959. Born in Deemess in the Orkney Islands, Muir wrote that he grew up in a “culture made up of legends, folk-song, and the poetry and prose of the Bible.” But when he was 13 his family moved to industrial Glasgow, where within a year he was forced to leave school and where he lost both parents by the time he was eighteen. A highly repected literary critic as well as a poet and novelist, Muir was invited to give the prestigious Charles Eliot Norton lectures at Harvard in 1955-56.

The second essay cluster examines the annotations made in books from Eliot’s personal library, recently made available to researchers for the first time. In the first essay, Callison offers the first extensive reading of Eliot’s marginalia to F. H. Bradley’s Appearance and Reality. Callison notes a stylistic shift in Eliot’s critical prose, particularly in the philosophical essays written at Harvard and during Michaelmas term 1914 at Oxford, while he was studying and annotating Bradley. In addition to examining Eliot’s annotations and their relevance to his developing philosophical mind, Callison uses these annotations to explain Eliot’s retrospective assessment of Bradley’s “style” as the means by which the philosopher most indelibly influenced the literary and cultural critic. In the second essay, Pierce offers a phenomenological reading of Eliot’s view of language, showing that a phenomenological “suspension” of definite reference is central to his poetic style. Examining annotations from Eliot’s library, Pierce attributes this tendency to Eliot’s reading of Edmund Husserl.

Abstract Nestled comfortably into the wooded hills above Florence, the village of Settignano served as the municipal hub for a number of large private estates with their villas and mansion houses, some newly built and fashionably ornate, others ancient but crumbling with style. The most notable of these was the Villa I Tatti, home of Bernard Berenson, eminent art critic, collector, connoisseur, and writer on Italian Renaissance painting and sculpture. Here, during the first quarter of the century, he housed his celebrated art collection, assembled a great library, and improved the imposing grounds. Upon his death in 1959 he would leave the villa and its fifty thousand books to his alma mater, Harvard University, as the nucleus of an institute of humanistic studies.

This research explores where project management practitioners can go to develop their soft skills. The academic research is presented and then summarised to identify the core soft skills needed for success (ICB4.0+). We then mapped the course offerings of top universities such as Harvard University, Oxford University and Tsinghua University against these core soft skills. We conclude that very few universities offer courses that develop the soft skills needed for project success. The practical implications of this research are that: The findings will guide project management practitioners on where they can go to develop the soft skills that are critical to project success. The newly developed ICB4.0+ may guide the development of project management education programs and may lead to practitioners actually being taught what they need to succeed. Further research is recommended to validate the mapping of university courses against the ICB4.0+ competencies.

N. Macedonia is a country characterized by relatively high seismic activity. As a consequence of its special tectonic regime, and quite frequent occurrence of damaging earthquakes, necessity for reliable seismic hazard and risk assessments are of outmost importance. Initial and one of the most important steps in PSHA is the seismic source characterization. Previously used seismic hazard models at the national level (Mihailov, 1978; Milutinovic et al., 1998; Dojcinovski, 2005; Stamatovska and Koytcheva, 2013; Salic, 2015; Milutinovic et al., 2016) consisted in areal type and/or gridded seismicity sources (Salic, 2015; Milutinovic et al., 2016), owing to the lack of seismogenic active fault parameters. All up to date available national (Basic Geological Map 1:100.000; Arsovski and Petkovski, 1975; Janchevski, 1987; Petkovski, 1992; Arsovski, 1997; Dumurdzanov et al., 2005; Drogreshka, 2018) and regional and European (EDSF13 and EFSM20) fault parametrization data were summarized and comparatively analysed. Three main declustered catalogues of earthquakes (National Seismological Observatory, BSHAP project, and ESHM20-Unified Earthquake Catalogue) for the territory of N. Macedonia and border region were also described and comparatively analysed. Histogram analysis related to different earthquake parameters were performed and compared together with the time completeness checks. As addition fault-plane solutions extracted from international or local seismic agencies concerning the studied region were analysed and systemised (Harvard CMT, INGV, EMEC, EPICA, BSHAP, Drogreshka, 2018). In this study, gaps and inconsistencies were drawn out from these data and alternative state-of-the-art methodologies were proposed to be used for seismogenic fault parametrization as a critical step towards reliable seismic hazard assessment.

Climate change is not only a crisis of the physical environment but also a predicament of the cultural environment and in turn requires a renewed media strategy to make public such planetary concern. This essay considers the role of architectural media within the context of a pedagogic experiment called Earth on Display. The workshop deployed design research to engage in the difficult (and necessary) quest of climate change communication in museums of science and nature. In recent years, natural history museums have introduced climate change to their programming. The scientific language of such climate exhibits remains however inaccessible to most visitors and with little impact on their affective experience or their political actions. How can climate change be imagined, spatialized, and experienced and come to matter? What are the representational worlds –the Anthropocene “cabinet of curiosities” and “wonders”–that move from abstract knowledge to material evidence to render climate change sense-able, and actionable to broader publics? The workshop, taught by the author of this essay, was conducted with the support of the Harvard Museum of Natural History and culminated in the installation of The Chamber of the Anthropocene temporary exhibit in the museum’s Climate Change Gallery. At once a curatorial exercise and a speculative geographic landscape, Earth on Display mediated climate knowledge through the aesthetic and spatial qualities of things. Objects, cabinets, remains: here is an assembling of wonders from a damaged planet, brought together in order to cultivate the arts of remembering effectively, so as to care seriously, to care for, to care with. Each essay is a provocation to curiosity in the sense of incitement to feel, know, care, and respond. —Donna Haraway.

Considered repositories of objects(Cuno 2009), museums have been analysed through the object-oriented policies they mainly focus on. Three main purposes are often mentioned: preservation, dissemination of knowledge and access to tradition. Beyond these informative and cultural-laden functions, museums have also been labeled as theatres of power, the emphasis lying on nation-oriented policies. According to Michael F. Brown (2009: 148), the outcome of this moral standing of the nation-state is a mobilizing public sentiment in favour of the state power. We consider that the constant flow of national and international exhibitions or events that could be hosted in museums has a twofold consequence: on the one hand, a cultural dynamics due to the permanent contact with unknown objects, and on the other hand, some visibility strategies in order to attract visitors. This latter effect actually embodies a shift within the perception of museums from entities of knowledge towards leisure environments. Within this context where the concept of edutainment(Eschach 2007) seems to prevail in the non-formal way of acquiring new knowledge, contemporary virtual museums display visual information without regard to geographic location (Dahmen, Sarraf, 2009). They play ?a central role in making culture accessible to the mass audience(Carrazzino, Bergamasco 2010) by using new technologies and novel interaction paradigms. Our study will aim at analyzing the way in which civilization was e-framed in the virtual project ?A History of the World in 100 Objects, run by BBC Radio 4 and the British Museum in 2010. The British Museum won the 2011 Art Fund Prize for this innovative platform whose main content was created by the contributors (the museums and the members of the public). The chairman of the panel of judges, Michael Portillo, noted that the judges were impressed that the project used digital media in ground-breaking and novel ways to interact with audiences. The two theoretical frameworks used in our analysis are framing theories and critical discourse analysis. ?Schemata of interpretation? (Goffman 1974), frames are used by individuals to make sense of information or an occurrence, providing principles for the organization of social reality? (Hertog & McLeod 2001). Considered cultural structures with central ideas and more peripheral concepts and a set of relations that vary in strength and kind among them? (Hertog, McLeod 2001, p.141), frames rely on the selection of some aspects of a perceived reality which are made more salient in a communicating text or e-text. We will interpret this virtual museum as a hypertext which ?makes possible the assembly, retrieval, display and manipulation? (Kok 2004) of objects belonging to different cultures. The structural analysis of the virtual museum as a hypertext will focus on three orders of abstraction (Kok 2004): item, lexia, and cluster. Dividing civilization into 20 periods of time, from making us human (2,000,000 - 9000 BC) up to the world of our making (1914 - 2010 AD), the creators of the digital museum used 100 objects to make sense of the cultural realities which dominated our civilization. The History of the World in 100 Objects used images of these objects which can be considered ?as ideological and as power-laden as word (Jewitt 2008). Closely related to identities, ideologies embed those elements which provide a group legitimation, identification and cohesion. In our analysis of the 100 virtual objects framing e-civilization we will use the six categories which supply the structure of ideologies in the critical discourse analysis framework (van Dijk 2000: 69): membership, activities, goals, values/norms, position (group-relations), resources. The research questions will focus on the content of this digital museum: (1) the types of objects belonging to the 20 periods of e-civilization; (2) the salience of countries of origin for the 100 objects; (3) the salience of social practices framed in the non-formal teaching of e-civilization/culture; and on the visitors? response: (1) the types of attitudes expressed in the forum comments; (2) the types of messages visitors decoded from the analysis of the objects; (3) the (creative) value of such e-resources. Indonesia is facing a learning crisis. While schooling has increased dramatically in the last 30 years, the quality of education has remained mediocre (Rosser et al., 2022). Teacher capability is an often cited weakness of the system, along with policies and system governance. Approaches focused primarily on adding resources to education have not yielded expected outcomes of increased quality. “It is a tragedy that in the second decade of the twenty-first century, some children in Indonesia are not completing primary school and are turned out into the workforce as functional illiterates.” (Suryadarma and Jones, 2013; Nihayah et al., 2020). In the early 2000s, Indonesia began a process of decentralising service delivery, including education, to the district level. Many responsibilities were transferred from the central government to districts, but some key authorities, such as hiring of civil service teachers, remained with the central government. The Indonesian system is complex and challenging to manage, with more than 300 ethnic groups and networks of authority spread over more than 500 administrative districts (Suryadarma and Jones, 2013). Niken Rarasati and Daniel Suryadarma researchers at SMERU, an Indonesian think tank and NGO, understood this context well. Their prior experience working in the education sector had shown them that improving the quality of education within the classroom required addressing issues at the systems level (Kleden, 2020). Rarasati noted the difference in knowledge between in-classroom teaching and the systems of education: “There are known-technologies, pedagogical theories, practices, etc. for teaching in the classroom. The context [for systems of education] is different for teacher development, recruitment, and student enrollment. Here, there is less known in the public and education sector.” Looking for ways to bring changes to policy implementation and develop capabilities at the district level, SMERU researchers began to apply a new approach they had learned in a free online course offered by the Building State Capability programme at the Center for International Development at Harvard University titled, “The Practice of PDIA: Building Capability by Delivering Results”. The course offered insights on how to implement public policy in complex settings, focused on using Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation (PDIA). The researchers were interested in putting PDIA into practice and seeing if it could be an effective approach for their colleagues in government. This case study reviews Rarasati and Suryadarma’s journey and showcases how they used PDIA to foster relationships between local government and stakeholders, and bring positive changes to the education sector.

Organizational cultures that emphasize fairness, connection and human-centeredness inspire more effective collaboration, are more economically efficient, and can manage conflict and crisis effectively.[i] Such cultures are also marked by less burnout and more engagement, retention, and satisfaction.[ii] These cultural values directly relate to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace. Despite these well-known values, leaders do not always know how to talk about them or make them tangible and practical. REAL is a research informed framework crafted carefully to do exactly that: help leaders make culture change real to the people on their teams. REAL is a research informed framework crafted carefully to do exactly that: help leaders make culture change real to the people on their teams. REAL provides the necessary foundation to generate effective EDI solutions that capture real effects and challenges people face. The current paper describes the REAL framework, the research underpinning its core tenets, and insights for leaders committed to building more equitable, diverse, and inclusive organizational cultures. The elements of the framework are: Reveal relevant opportunities by exploring your organization as a complex system, identifying strategic actions for change, and being clear that goals may be hard to achieve. Elevate equity as foundational to diversity and inclusion efforts because it provides fair opportunities for all to reach full potential. Activate diversity strategically by embracing stakeholders’ vast reservoir of perspectives and experiences, ultimately enhancing innovation and decision-making.
