Анотація:

This paper explores extreme storms with marine flooding events in historical times. It focuses on the challenges associated with detecting these events with a degree of certainty in a changing environment. The paleoenvironmental changes which turned the Gulf of Pictons into the Belle Henriette lagoon have required the reconstruction of events to be based on cored sediments. This study aims to establish how sedimentological washovers can be detected in a depositional environment that has changed profoundly over recent centuries. The Belle Henriette lagoon site is unique. Despite the profound environmental changes that have taken place, the impact of storms was well preserved in the five cores extracted. Eighteen historical extreme storms with marine floods were detected in the sediment. By cross-referencing with historical archives, thirteen storms were estimated in 1990, 1940, 1896, 1876, 1859, 1838, 1820, 1811, 1751, 1711, 1645, 1469, and 1351. Five older storms dating back to 1090, 1036, 941, 809, and 581 will also be discussed. By conducting a thorough historical review, we can conclude that these extreme storms caused significant damage and had a profound impact on the socioeconomic coastal communities.

Polyophthalmus zhadanae sp. nov. (Annelida, Opheliidae), is described from the coast of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia (Arabian Gulf) after specimens collected in the intertidal and shallow subtidal. This new species is characterised by the body pigmentation pattern, distribution of lateral eyes, presence of small dorsal and ventral parapodial cirri and pygidial features. External and internal anatomy was described after examination with SEM and micro-CT. The presence of several body structures in the genus such as a cephalic palpode-like papilla is discussed. Furthermore, the diversity of genus Polyophthalmus and the presence of Polyophthalmus pictus (Dujardin, 1839) in the Indo-Pacific is reviewed and a key to species is provided.

Анотація:

Specimens and nests of Pomatoschistus pictus adriaticus have been caught for the first time along the French Mediterranean shore (Gulf of Lions). Six types of nests are found on sandy-gravelly bottom at 10 m depth and 25.3 to 27.5 g 1−1 salinity, using in 84.7% of cases, a valve of Cardium edule (3.3≤weight g≤40.6; 507≤surface mm2≤2490). Nest size, egg patch, surface area and nesting fecundity are positively correlated. Nesting fecundity varies between 669 and 4690 eggs. For a similar egg diameter, the egg height is less than that of P. minutus which spawns on the same bottom and localities. Larval length at hatching varies from 1.70 to 2.67 mm.

Анотація:

Deep-sea echinoderms (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) from the Mexican Pacific. The coastal strip of the Mexican Pacific and Gulf of California includes 11 states, and considering Isla Guadalupe and the Revillagigedo archipelago, Mexico has 2 364 200 km2 of marine extension in the Pacific Ocean. Studies of deep benthic macroinvertebrates for this area began with the Albatross, which traveled from the Guadalupe Islands to Guaymas in 1891. To date, 26 species of echinoids have been reported, with a bathymetric range that exceeds 200 m. In the present work, the previous bibliographic records for echinoids that were collected within the limits of the Mexican Pacific were corroborated. The taxonomic identity of the 26 species reported was also corroborated by 11 689 specimens deposited in four scientific collections: two Mexican collections (3 322 specimens in the National Collection of Echinoderms “Dra. M. E. Caso” of the ICML, UNAM and 6 673 specimens deposited in the Invertebrate Reference Collection of the Mazatlán Station - ICML, UNAM) and two international collections (1 420 specimens deposited at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, and 140 specimens deposited at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University). No collection records were found at depths greater than 200 m for the species Lytechinus pictus (Verrill, 1867), Clypeaster europacificus H.L. Clark, 1914, Dendraster excentricus (Eschscholtz, 1831), Lovenia cordiformis A. Agassiz, 1872 and Brissus obesus Verrill, 1867. No records were found for Kamptosoma asterias (A. Agassiz, 1881), Araeolampas fulva (A. Agassiz, 1879) and Nacospatangus depressus H.L. Clark, 1917, which belonged to specimens collected within the limits of the Mexican Pacific. Within the material examined in the scientific collections specimen records were found only for 18 of the 26 species of sea urchins that were collected at a depths greater than 200 m in the Mexican Pacific. In Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea, the narrator speaks of the healing power of the Gulf in a literal manner: the waters of the Gulf of Mexico heal the wounded hands of the fisherman. The seventeen stories in the following collection examine Hemingway's concept on other levels, focusing on the human ability--or lack thereof--to bridge psychological gulfs, and to find emotional healing. Three major currents run through the lives of the characters in Gulf: difficulties in relationships, struggles with identity, and a sense of being haunted by the unexplained. As the stories progress, the healing waters of the Gulf move the characters away from chaos and toward contentment. In early stories, characters are often appalled by the discovery of their true identities; the later stories feature heroes who've found happiness and peace. Scattered throughout the book are the haunted stories, those that question the boundaries between what is real and what is imagined, what is known and what can never be understood. Gulf is informed by the landscape of the south, yet some stories venture around the world, from the Gulf of Mexico to the heather-dotted hills of Scotland, exploring themes as dark and mysterious as the Gulf itself.

Entre le début du XVIIIe siècle et la fin du Second Empire, la côte continentale du Pertuis Breton connaît une évolution significative. Elle est constituée de trois paysages géomorphologiques singuliers, dynamiques et corrélés : un territoire marécageux, une zone dunaire et une côte à falaises. Ces milieux subissent des transformations naturelles lentes à l’origine de la constitution des flèches sableuses d’Arcay et de l’Aiguillon qui forment un grand cordon dunaire. Celui-ci est alimenté par un transport considérable des sables de l’ouest vers l’est par dérive littorale. Ces mouvements de sédiments sont soumis à l’influence d’agents hydrodynamiques. La remontée des eaux de l’océan entraîne le colmatage progressif du golfe des Pictons par des apports de sédiments d’origine fluvio-marine. Ce processus est à l’origine de la formation de l’anse de l’Aiguillon et du Marais poitevin. Ces milieux subissent également des transformations naturelles brutales dues à des phénomènes climatiques extrêmes. Cette étude met aussi en lumière la part de l’influence humaine dans l’évolution et la modification de leur trait de côte. Les aménagements sont particulièrement visibles dans le Marais poitevin. Entre le Moyen Âge et le XIXe siècle, ce territoire est l’enjeu d’une grande transformation qui modifie largement son écosystème. Cette zone humide est drainée par l’instauration de canaux, de digues et d’écluses. Between the beginning of the 18th century and the end of the Second Empire, the continental coast of the Pertuis Breton experienced a significant evolution. It is composed of three singular, dynamic and correlated geomorphological landscapes: a marshy area, a dune zone and a cliff coast. These environments underwent slow natural transformations which led to the creation of the sandy spits of Arcay and Aiguillon which form a large dune belt. The latter is fed by a considerable transport of sand from west to east by littoral drift. These sediment movements are subject to the influence of hydrodynamic agents. The rise in oceanic waters leads to the progressive clogging of the Gulf of the Pictons with sediment of fluvio marine origin. This process is at the origin of the formation of the Aiguillon Cove and the Poitevin Marsh. These environments also go through brutal natural transformations due to extreme climatic phenomena. This study also highlights the role of human influence in the evolution and modification of their coastline. Developments are particularly visible in the Marais Poitevin. Between the Middle Ages and the 19th century, this territory was the focus of a major transformation that greatly modified its ecosystem. This wetland was drained by the creation of canals, dykes and locks. Thanks to the draining carried out by the marsh companies, agriculture and livestock farming flourished and gradually replaced the flooded lands, which were considered unsanitary. The marshes then experienced an influx of people. The State is present on this coastline through the Admiralty under the Ancien Régime or the administration of the Ponts et Chaussées in the 19th century

American policy in the Persian Gulf since the end of the Gulf war has dangerously overemphasized military instruments to protect United States interests in the region. This military focus suggests that threats to American interests are external and visible. At the same time it neglects the challenges posed to U.S. interests by internal political upheaval in the pro-American regimes of the Gulf Cooperation Council and ignores the societal disruptions associated with modernizing societies. Despite their considerable oil wealth, these polities will be increasingly vulnerable to instability if the regimes in power continue their monopoly on political power. Great swaths of Southeastern Louisiana are drowning, land giving way to water at an alarming rate. Since the 1920s, Louisiana has lost more than 1,800 square miles of wetlands to open water, an area about the size of the state of Delaware. In the same amount of time it takes to watch an episode of Breaking Bad, our state loses the equivalent of a football field’s-worth of solid ground to the rising seas. My thesis is the first part of an accessible creative nonfiction book that tells the story of what’s happening in my home state. To what extent is it feasible to engineer ourselves out of harm’s way? What communities get relocated, and on whose terms? Most centrally, how will we address the troubling gulf between what we know to be true about our changing climate and what we are willing to do about it?

Анотація:

Abstract Dealing with potentially vast and serious environmental incidents has remained a challenge for the Oil and Gas Industry, thus, the aftermath of April 20, 2010, Macondo disaster, deserves a holistic overview of events responsible for, or associated with, the disaster. The study adopted and adapted the HACCP analysis and drew lessons by not only identifying and tracing the immediate and remote causes of the spill but also making appropriate recommendations on prevention and remediation measures to be adopted at similar operating points in the Gulf of Guinea area, like Shell's Bonga FPSO facility and Chevron's Agbami. Using detailed extrapolation as a basis for the establishment of material conditionalities and similarities existing between the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of Guinea, the study was conducted with the aid of an extensive and exhaustive review of literature, technical reports, and other de-classified materials to determine, amongst other things, the how, why and lessons learned. The results show that there are still technological, legal, and administrative lapses in our jurisdiction, causing shortcomings in the applicable administration of rules, regulations, and enforcement procedures in the Oil and Gas sector, which has been and is still being exploited negatively by industry players. Hazard Analyses Critical Control Points addressed particularly include, causes of explosions, nature of fire, loss of well control, blowout, vessel sinking, casualties, modes of evacuation, vessel safety systems, oil spillage, environmental damages, systems deficiencies, maintenance of electrical equipment, gas alarms and automatic/emergency shutdown systems, the inadequacy of crew blast protection equipment barrier, inadequate intractable command, and control hands-off, lack of requisite training for personnel on emergency preparedness, to shut down engines and disconnect, risk-based decisions, abilities to prevent or limit the magnitude of the disaster. The study concluded that an immediate review of some identified outdated rules and operational guidelines of the DPR be undertaken, namely: procedure guide for the construction and maintenance of fixed offshore platforms; procedure guide for construction & maintenance of surface production facilities; flexible pipes, SCR, and mooring chain systems. requirements for the maintenance and inspection of flexible pipes, SCR, and mooring chain systems; operation & maintenance of pipelines. guidelines etc. Adding more pre-installed blowout preventer (BoP) systems per rig/drill line, as well as call for a review of proposed PIB, EGASPIN 2018, and a further strengthening of NOSDRA.
