Yang Guifei (719 – 756) was the beloved concubine of Emperor XuanZong (685 – 762) of the Tang Dynasty, the ex-wife of one of his sons and one of the four most beautiful women in Chinese history. The emperor’s ardent and fateful love for her marked the beginning of the crisis and decline of the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Xuen Zong’s passion for the beautiful Yang Guifei led him to ruin and abdication, and the entire Tang Empire to inevitable disintegration. The concubine Guifei was as charming as she was cunning and extravagant, but later centuries have forgotten her vices and left us with only a classic story of pure love. The love story between Emperor Xuen Zong and his beloved concubine remains in Chinese history as one of the most exciting dramas, marked by political intrigue and fateful coups.

Mei Fei was one of the favourite concubines of Emperor Xuan Zong (685–762) of the Tang Dynasty, whose stay in the palace coincided with that of another favourite of the emperor, Yang Guifei. But while much has been written about Yang Guifei, almost nothing is known about Mei Fei. The little that is known about her is mostly due to a copy (dating from the end of the 11th – the beginning of the 12th century) of a scroll taken by the bookseller Zhu Zundu, known by the nickname Zhu Wanjuan (“Zhu – the ten thousand scrolls”).

The article’s author considers the system of dominant themes in the operas of the Chinese composer of the 20th century Jin Xiang, close to the principle of the end-to-end development of thematism in European and Russian classical opera. The author reveals the specifi cs of working with thematism in the operas “Savage Land”, “Yang Guifei” and “Eight Women Jump Into the River”. The research methods were a holistic and comparative analysis of the thematism of operas in terms of expressiveness, imaginative-semantic content, dramatic function, and symphonic development. The analysis of the “dominant thematism” and its development in Jin Xiang’s operas made it possible to prove that leitmotifs embody the national ideological content in the works of the Chinese composer, express senses, states and actions of the heroes, describe events, and reveal plot confl icts of the drama. In his opera work, Jin Xiang develops his own system of leitmotifs, connecting each opera together in imaginative, semantic, dramatic and organisational aspects. At the same time, the dominant thematism gives Jin Xiang’s works a national character, allowing Chinese opera to maintain its identity against the background of the stylistic globalisation in music.

Анотація:
Choral music in China is a dynamically developing form of contemporary musical art. Scientific works devoted to the Chinese choral culture consider the 1930s of the 20th century as the most productive period in the development of this branch of musical creativity. The article examines the phase of the active entry of Chinese choral music into the sphere of the oratorio genre, which is directly related to the name of the great Chinese composer — Huang Tzi. It also highlights the issues of the country’s political life in the 1930s, which actively influenced the creation of nationwide singing movements and new choral works in the country. The oratorio genre, the genesis of which refers us to the European religious musical tradition of the 17th century, spread in China owing to the massive flow of Chinese intelligentsia to the territory of Western states throughout the entire beginning of the 20th century. In the article, the actualisation of the oratorio and its interpretation in a new light is presented as the merit of Huang Tzi, whose civic position was directly related to the desire to preserve ethnic origins in Chinese music and to complement them with Western composing techniques organically. Having proved himself not only as a composer but also as a theorist and teacher, Huang Tzi devoted most of his life to educating a large number of music professors, initiating a progressive approach to music education. His desire to raise the level of the composing school in China made it possible to enrich the repertoire of vocal and instrumental music with characteristics of the folk style. The oratorio Eternal Regret presented in the article is a unique creation that organically combines ethnic music and Western composition techniques. In the story of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei (to the poems of Tang poet Bai Juyi), taken by the composer as the theme for the libretto, there is certain symbolism that has the conceptual plan of addressing the power to demonstrate the alleged results of Kuomintang’s unclear policy. Thus, directly related to political cataclysms and their final embodiment in the form of the Sino-Japanese war (1937-1945), the oratorio Eternal Regret is presented in the article as a consolidating core that inspired the civilian masses to fight the Japanese invaders. The analysis of Bai Juyi’s original poem “Eternal Regret” and a fragmentary historical-stylistic and vocal-choral analysis of the oratorio have been carried out. The artistic features of individual parts of the oratorio, seven of which were completed by the composer, are revealed. Based on literary sources and theoretical research presented in the article, the author asserts the special role of the oratorio Eternal Regret in history and its far-reaching influence on the prospects for the development of the Chinese choir.

Control of unlicensed tour guides is the authority of the Bali provincial government through Civil service police Unit (Satpol PP) as a form of oversight of all regional regulations, especially regional guide regulations. SatPol PP is granted the authority to supervise by the government and cooperate with court police and tourism institutions in the law enforcement system. This study discusses the authority of the Bali Provincial Government in supervising unlicensed tour guides and sanctions against unlicensed tour guides. The method used to achieve these goals is the empirical legal research method, which is to conduct field research through interviews and taking notice of the existing phenomena in society related to the problems being studied. The results of the data analysis show that the government is provided the authority by statutory regulations through Law Number 10 of 009 concerning Tourism and Regional Regulation of the Province of Bali Number 5 of 2016 concerning Tour Guides. Supervision is carried out through preventive and repressive measures and is in the law enforcement system. Sanctions are applied to tour guides who are not licensed by imposing sanctions in the form of fines through court proceedings and tour guides who commit violations will be subject to tourism violations in the form of fines. The implementation is carried out through the secrets of the tour guides when carrying out their duties in each tourism area in Bali. Guiding secrets are executed through the control function in each working area.

Dans le cadre des recherches sur une source laser de puissance compacte en nd : yag, ce memoire presente l'etude et la realisation d'amplificateurs guides d'ondes appliques aux microlasers. Les microlasers en nd : yag sont des sources monolithiques et miniatures pompes par diode laser et emettant a 1m. Il apparait que l'augmentation de la puissance des microlasers permet de repondre a de nouvelles applications potentielles. Nous avons donc modelise, dans un premier temps, le fonctionnement en regime continu et impulsionnel des amplificateurs guides d'ondes planaires pompes transversalement pour dimensionner les dispositifs. La modelisation a pris en compte les phenomenes susceptibles de limiter le gain de l'amplificateur : l'upconversion, la saturation de l'absorption de la pompe. Nous avons ensuite realise les structures guidantes par epitaxie en phase liquide (epl) en utilisant, pour la premiere fois avec les couches epitaxiees de yag (y 3al 5o 1 2), un nouveau solvant : le melange bi 2o 3/b 2o 3. Cette mise au point technologique a necessite l'emploi de 9 techniques de caracterisation pour controler les parametres de croissance de nos couches. Deux types de structures ont ete synthetises : des guides multicouches pour pompage par la gaine et des guides possedant une simple couche active enterree par une couche de protection. Dans une derniere etape du travail, un banc de test des guides d'ondes realises a permis de montrer l'amplification dans ces dernieres structures avec des valeurs comparables a celles prevues par la theorie.

Ce travail est consacré à l'élaboration de guides d'onde planaires de Y2O3 Y2O3:Tb3+ et Y3Al5O12 (YAG) préparés par la méthode sol-gel ainsi qu'à leur étude selon les températures de traitement thermique. Deux précurseurs différents, l'acétate d'yttrium et l'alkoxyde d'yttrium sont utilisés pour l'obtention des guides de Y2O3. Leurs propriétés structurales et les propriétés optiques, analysées en configuration guidée, qui en découlent sont étudiées et comparées en fonction des paramètres d'élaboration. Les guides d'onde de Y2O3 dopés Tb3+ sont fabriqués à partir de sources conventionnelles d'ions ou de nanoparticules contenant du terbium. Le comportement optique et l'efficacité de luminescence sont examinés selon le type et la concentration de dopant. Le procédé sol-gel est également utilisé pour la préparation de guides d'onde de YAG en exploitant l'expérience obtenue avec les guides de Y2O3. Trois approches différentes sont examinées. Les mécanismes de cristallisation s'avèrent être très sensibles aux méthodes d'élaboration et en conséquence conduisent à des comportements très différents en optique guidée. Un montage original de spectroscopie des lignes noires multi-longueurs d'onde (MWMLS) est réalisé et utilisé dans cette étude

Nous présentons dans ce manuscrit des mesures de corrélations spatiales à un et deux corps effectuées sur un gaz de bosons unidimensionnel et ultra-froid piégé à la surface d'une microstructure. Les corrélations à deux corps sont mises en évidence par des mesures de fluctuations de densité in situ ; les corrélations à un corps sont sondées grâce à des mesures de distributions en impulsion. Nous avons observé des fluctuations de densité sub-poissoniennes dans le régime d'interactions faibles, mettant ainsi en évidence pour la première fois le sous-régime du régime de quasi-condensat dans lequel la fonction de corrélation à deux corps est dominée par les fluctuations quantiques. Nous avons également observé des fluctuations sub-poissoniennes quelle que soit la densité dans le régime d'interactions fortes ; notre mesure constitue la première observation d'un unique gaz de bosons unidimensionnel dans ce régime. Le piège magnétique que nous avons utilisé est un piège modulé qui possède la propriété remarquable de découplage entre confinements transverse et longitudinal. Cette spécificité nous a permis de façonner à volonté la forme du confinement longitudinal. En particulier, nous avons pu obtenir des pièges harmoniques et quartiques. Nous avons également utilisé les propriétés de ce piège modulé afin de réaliser une lentille magnétique longitudinale. Cette technique nous a permis de mesurer la distribution en impulsion du gaz, dans le régime d'interactions faibles. Nous présentons deux résultats, obtenus de part et d'autre de la transition molle entre les régimes de gaz de Bose idéal et de quasi-condensat. Sur le plan théorique, nous montrons qu'une théorie de champ classique ne suffit pas à décrire quantitativement cette transition molle pour les paramètres typiques de l'expérience. Nous avons donc recours à des calculs Monte-Carlo quantiques. La température extraite de l'ajustement de nos donnée par ces calculs est en bon accord avec celle obtenue en ajustant les fluctuations de densité in situ avec la thermodynamique de C. N. Yang et C. P. Yang. Enfin, nous démontrons une méthode de compensation de la gravité (piégeage harmonique résiduel) lors de la phase de lentille magnétique, qui nous permet d'améliorer considérablement la résolution en impulsion de cette technique.

L'epitaxie en phase liquide a permis de realiser des guides planaires emettant a temperature ambiante autour de 2 microns. Les materiaux etudies ont ete le yag (y3al5o12) et le yso (y2sio5) dopes par un ion terre rare tm3+. Ce memoire decrit les conditions necessaires pour l'obtention de couches de bonne qualite. Il met notamment en avant le fait que les conditions de croissance du yso sont beaucoup plus severes que celles du yag (plage de sursaturation plus petite, vitesse de croissance plus faible). Les differentes caracterisations effectuees ont montre la qualite des guides realises, notamment les performances laser qui ont ete obtenues. Les resultats obtenus pour le yag:tm confirment la bonne adaptation des guides a un pompage par diode. Un effet laser a ete obtenu pour les guides de yso:tm en pompant avec un laser saphir:titane. Ce sont les premiers resultats laser obtenus pour des guides planaires de yso:tm. L'epitaxie en phase liquide est une technique qui permet de realiser des guides planaires. Toutefois pour certaines applications l'utilisation de guides de largeur limitee est plus interessante. Nous avons donc developpe des procedes de fabrication de guides de largeur limitee. Deux techniques differentes sont exposees dans ce memoire: l'une faisant appel a des procedes de micro-usinage, que nous avons baptise polisciage, et la seconde basee sur un principe de gravure chimique. Les resultats obtenus sont prometteurs et pourraient etre utilises pour de futures applications (guides d'ondes laser, amplificateurs)

Dans le cadre des recherches sur des dispositifs laser compacts pouvant etre pompes par diodes, ce memoire decrit le developpement d'une nouvelle technique d'elaboration de lasers guides d'onde, l'epitaxie en phase liquide. Cette technique a ete appliquee a la croissance de couches minces monocristallines de yag dope neodyme et ytterbium sur des substrats de yag non dope. Afin d'obtenir des guides de bonne qualite, nous avons defini les conditions de croissance des couches et montre l'interet de la croissance d'une surcouche de confinement. Deux co-dopages ont ete etudies en supplement a l'ion actif: gallium pour controler l'indice optique des couches, lutetium pour controler leur parametre cristallin. La determination du coefficient de segregation des divers dopants a requis le developpement d'un modele qui prend en compte l'evolution des bains au cours du temps. Nous avons mesure l'augmentation d'indice due a chaque dopant et propose un mecanisme expliquant cette augmentation. La caracterisation spectroscopique des couches a indique que les ions actifs ont les memes proprietes que le materiau massif de meme composition. La caracterisation laser a montre des pertes par propagation tres faibles (environ 0,1 db/cm), comparables a celles du materiau massif. Pour la transition laser a 1064 nm du neodyme, nous avons demontre l'effet laser pour une puissance absorbee au seuil de 700 w et mesure un rendement differentiel de 40% en pompage par diode, pour un seuil de 14 mw. Pour des transitions laser quasi-3 niveaux, une diminution significative du seuil par rapport a une configuration non guidee a ete obtenue: a 946 nm dans un guide dope neodyme, a 1029 nm dans un guide dope ytterbium en pompage par barrette de diode 1w. Un rendement differentiel de 80% a egalement ete mesure dans un guide dope ytterbium emettant a 1048 nm

The first chapter identifies the general nature, structure, and function of the Yijing. It explains the difference between its two names in Chinese, Zhouyi and Yijing, and summarizes the process by which the Zhouyi was “Confucianized,” thereby becoming the Yijing. Its earliest form, the sixty-four hexagrams (six-line diagrams), was attributed to the mythic sage Fuxi, China’s original “culture-hero.” Its earliest textual level (short statements accompanying each hexagram) was attributed to the first king of the Zhou dynasty (1045–256 BCE), King Wen. The chapter concludes by outlining the major philosophical and cosmological concepts embodied in the text (e.g. dao, qi, yin-yang) and the graphic figures (trigrams and hexagrams) that constitute its core.

This essay features translations from the works of Taoist patriarch Liu Yiming 劉一明 (1734-1821) on the specific topic of female alchemy, or nüdan, the process of Taoist self-cultivation for women. This process differs from male self-cultivation in many important ways. It starts by focusing on the breasts, not the abdomen, where male cultivation begins. It continues by transforming Blood (xue 血), understood to be the most important element of female physiology. Refining blood into an essential source of energy is at the root of female self-cultivation which, aided by internal visualisations, breast massage, and guided breathing, aims at creating a pure Yang body, able to transcend this world.

The only Integrated Optical Parametric Oscillator1 (IOPO), reported to date was realized using Ti Indiffusion in LiNbO3, functionned at 250°C, and was pumped with a pulsed dye laser operating at 0.6 μm. In this paper we use a numerical model to show that the use of periodically poled2,3,4 LiNbO3 with proton exchanged guides should permit operation of efficient parametric amplifiers and oscillators at ambiant temperature, using CW diode laser or mini-YAG pumps, and having signal and idler beams in the 1.3 and 1.55 μm telecommunication windows.

In a recent paper [1] we demonstrated an all-optical demultiplexer using a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) in which a signal at one wavelength is used to switch a signal at a different wavelength [2], [3]. The switching signal in that case was generated from a modelocked Nd-YAG laser at 1.32um operating at 76 MHz and the switched signal was a gain switched DFB laser operating at 1.56um at 1 GHz. The purpose of this present work is to extend the optical switching into the gigabit regime while, at the same time, avoiding high power laser systems.

We report on a monolithic resonator single-crystal Nd:YAG fiber laser. The laser resonator structure is simply formed by the fiber waveguide and the polished and coated fiber endfaces. The fiber oscillator is 6.5 mm long with a mean diameter of 47 μm. The lowest-order spatial mode for such a fiber has a beam waist of 15 μm, implying a Rayleigh length in YAG of 1.2 mm. The fiber laser is thus ~5-R lengths long and may be considered a guided-wave device.

Phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) in optical fibres has been studied by several workers [1] [2] [3]. The origin of the second-order non-linearity in a material which should be centro-symmetric is unclear. A model proposed recently[3] speculates that a third order interaction creates a spatially alternating static electric-field which orients defects and removes material symmetry. The periodic variation in the effective second-order nonlinearity χ(2) then allows phase-matching. Oullette et al [4] W have demonstrated the erasure of a phase-matching seeded grating [3] using blue or green Argon laser wavelengths. Recently, Fermann et al [5] showed alignment of defects by a strong external static electric-field applied to an optical fibre transmitting Ar+ radiation at 488 nm wavelength. Static-field alone [6] does not seem to ‘prepare’ the fibre, while irradiation with Argon light alone [5] seems to erase the grating. Unlike previously reported work, we show that radiation from an Ar+ laser operating at 514.5 nm on a single longitudinal mode (SLM) is sufficient on its own to enhance SHG of 1064 nm wavelength light from a Q-switched Nd3+:YAG laser in an elliptical cored fibre which is close to the phase-matched condition for one set of fundamental and second-harmonic modes.

The planar waveguide geometry is an attractive one for lasers [1] and amplifiers [2] since it offers some confinement of the pump and signal fields together with good power handling characteristics. We have demonstrated laser oscillation and amplification in a Nd:YAG waveguide, fabricated from bulk material by a thermal bonding technique. The waveguide, manufactured by Onyx Optics, California, consisted of a 5mm long, 20μm thick, lat.% Nd YAG layer sandwiched between two undoped YAG slabs. A feature of this guide fabrication technique is that it does not decrease peak cross section values by introducing additional line broadening.

Abstract It is now known the generally it can be demonstrated that artificial neural network (ANN), particularly the fully-connected feedforward configuration with backward propagation error-correction routine, can be a rather effective and accurate tool to correlate performance data of thermal devices such as heat exchangers (Sen and Yang, 2000; Kalogirou, 1999). Good examples are the recent demonstrations for the compact fin-tube heat exchangers (Diaz et al., 1999a; Yang et al., 2000; Pacheco-Vega et al., 1999) including those with complex geometries and also two-phase evaporators (Pacheco-Vega et al., 2000) as well as the dynamic modeling of such heat exchangers and their adaptive control (Diaz et al., 1999b; Diaz et al., 2000). Unfortunately, despite such successes, there are still implementation issues of the ANN analysis which lead to uncertainties in its applications and the achieved results. The present paper discusses such issues and the current practices in dealing with them. Those that will be discussed include the number of hidden layers, the number of nodes in each hidden layer, the range within which the input-output data are normalized, the initial assignment of weights and biases, the selection of training data sets, and the training rate. As will be shown, the specific choices are by no means trivial, and yet are rather important in achieving good ANN results in any given application. Since there are no general sound theoretical basis for such choices at the present time, past experience and numerical experimentation are often the best guides. However, many of these choices and issues relating to them involve optimization. As a result. Some of the existing optimization algorithms may prove to be useful and highly desirable in this regard. The current on-going research to provide some rational basis in these issues will also be discussed. Finally, it will also be mentioned that successfully implemented ANNs have many additional uses in practice. Examples include parameter sensitivity analysis, training, design of new experiments, and clustering of data sets.
