This study investigated the effect of the catechins profile on the antioxidant activity of green tea extracts (GTEs) by comparing the antioxidant activity of an EGC-rich GTE (GTE1, catechin content: 58% EGC, 30.1% EGCG, 7.9% EC, and 3.9% ECG) and an EGCG-rich GTE (GTE2, catechin content: 60.6% EGCG, 17.7% EGC, 11.8% ECG, and 9.8% EC) in a DHA-rich oil. The effects of the individual catechins (EGC, EC, EGCG, and ECG) and reconstituted catechins mixtures (CatMix), prepared to contain the same amount of major catechins as in the GTEs, were also measured. All treatments (GTE1, CatMix1, GTE2, CatMix2, EGC250, EC250, EGCG250, and ECG250), each containing epistructured catechins at a concentration of 250 ppm, as well as the control (oil with no added antioxidant), were stored at 30 °C for 21 days with sampling intervals of 7 days. The antioxidant activity was assessed by measuring the peroxide value (PV) and p-anisidine value (p-AV) of oils. Changes in fatty acid content and catechins content were also monitored. Both GTEs enhanced the oxidative stability of the DHA-rich oil, but GTE1 demonstrated a stronger antioxidant activity than GTE2. No significant difference was observed between the PV of treatments with GTE1 and CatMix1 during storage, whereas the PV of oil with GTE2 was significantly higher than that with CatMix2 after 21 days. Among the individual catechins, EGC was the strongest antioxidant. Overall, the antioxidant activities of the extracts and catechins were observed in the decreasing order GTE1 ≈ EGC250 ≈ CatMix1 > GTE2 > EGCG250 ≈ CatMix2 > ECG250 > EC250. A significant change in fatty acid content was observed for the control and EC250 samples, and the catechins were most stable in GTE1-supplemented oil. Our results indicate that the EGC-rich GTE is a more potent antioxidant in DHA-rich oil than the EGCG-rich GTE.

Unhealthy diet promotes progression of metabolic disorders and brain dysfunction with aging. Green tea extracts (GTEs) have various beneficial effects and alleviate metabolic disorders. GTEs have neuroprotective effects in rodent models, but their effects against brain dysfunction in models of aging fed unhealthy diets are still unclear. Here, we showed that GTEs attenuate high-fat (HF) diet-induced brain dysfunction in senescence-accelerated mouse prone-8 (SAMP8), a murine model of senescence. SAMP8 mice were fed a control diet, HF diet, or HF diet with 0.5% GTEs (HFGT) for four months. The HF diet reduced memory retention and induced amyloid β1–42 accumulation, whereas GTEs attenuated these changes. In HF diet-fed mice, lipid oxidative stress, assessed by malondialdehyde levels, was increased. The levels of proteins that promote synaptic plasticity, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95), were reduced. These alterations related to brain dysfunction were not observed in HFGT diet-fed mice. Overall, our data suggest that GTEs intake might attenuate brain dysfunction in HF diet-fed SAMP8 mice by protecting synaptic plasticity as well as via anti-oxidative effects. In conclusion, GTEs might ameliorate unhealthy diet-induced brain dysfunction that develops with aging.

The extracts of whole plants or specific organs from different plant species are gaining increasing attention for their phytotherapy applications. Accordingly, we prepared standardized gemmotherapy extracts (GTEs) from young shoots/buds of olive (Olea europaea), sweet almond (Prunus amygdalus), and black mulberry (Morus nigra), and analyzed the corresponding phytonutrient profiles. We identified 42, 103, and 109 phytonutrients in the olive, almond, and black mulberry GTEs, respectively, containing amino acids, vitamins, polyphenols, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, iridoids, carboxylic acids, lignans, terpenoids, and others. In order to assess the physiological effects generated by the GTEs, we developed a translational nutrition model based on Drosophila melanogaster and Cyprinus carpio. The results indicate that GTEs could influence, to a variable extent, viability and ATP synthesis, even though both are dependent on the specific carbohydrate load of the applied diet and the amino acid and polyphenol pools provided by the GTEs. It seems, therefore, likely that the complex chemical composition of the GTEs offers nutritional properties that cannot be separated from the health-promoting mechanisms that ultimately increase viability and survival. Such an approach sets the paves the way for the nutritional genomic descriptions regarding GTE-associated health-promoting effects.

RESUMO O artigo analisa os limites das subdimensões propostas pelo Programa Nacional de Melhoria do Acesso e da Qualidade da Atenção Básica (PMAQ-AB) para avaliação externa das equipes de Atenção Básica, a partir das diretrizes e dos princípios do campo Gestão do Trabalho e da Educação em Saúde (GTES). Realizou-se um estudo descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa e análise documental sobre o PMAQ-AB, elegendo-se o instrumento de avaliação externa e publicações do Ministério da Saúde relacionadas à política de GTES, no período de 2011 a 2014. Constatou-se que o instrumento de avaliação do PMAQ-AB converge com a política de GTES nos aspectos da precarização do trabalho e da valorização do trabalhador, porém, o instrumento não explora a negociação do trabalho e a saúde do trabalhador. Sua concepção de Educação Permanente em Saúde (EPS) é limitada, embora apresente potencialidades quando investiga a relação das ações de EPS ofertadas e as necessidades das equipes e ao retratar a integração ensino-serviço como um padrão de qualidade. Afirma-se que há necessidade de aprimoramento dos instrumentos do PMAQ-AB para o fortalecimento das diretrizes e dos princípios das políticas do GTES para o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), contudo, assume-se que o Programa tem potencial de geração de informações para o sistema de saúde.

Background: Green tea extract is a hydrophilic antioxidant that is difficult to penetrate. A nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) delivers a system consisting of solid-liquid lipids that can improve penetration. Argan oil is a vegetable oil that can be used as a liquid lipid in NLC, reducing particle size and increasing penetration by hydrating the skin. Objective: To determine the formula of NLC green tea extract (NLC-GTE) with liquid lipid argan oil, which has good characteristics and is stable. Methods: Preparation of NLC-GTE used the High Shear Homogenization with solid lipids (cetyl palmitate-glyceryl stearate) - liquid lipids (argan oil) NLC-GTE1 (50:50), NLC-GTE2 (70:30), and NLC-GTE3 (90:10). Characteristic tests included organoleptic, pH, particle size (PS), and polydispersity index (PI). The physical stability test (organoleptic, pH, PS, and PI) used the thermal cycling method (3 cycles six days). Result: NLC-GTE1 – NLC-GTE2 has an odor of argan oil. NLC-GTE3 has odorless. NLC-GTE1 – NLC-GTE3 has a pH scale from 5.782-5.784; PS ranges from 359.73–432.56 nm; PI ranges from 0.175-0.257. The statistical analysis results showed no significant difference between NLC-GTE1 – NLC-GTE3 in pH and PI, there was a significant difference in PS NLC-GTE1; NLC-GTE2 against NLC-GTE3. Physical stability test NLC-GTE2 – NLC-GTE3 phase separation occurs. The statistical analysis results showed no significant difference in pH values NLC-GTE1 – NLC-GTE3 ​​before and after storage; there was a significant difference in NLC-GTE3 before and after storage. Conclusion: NLC-GTE1 was a formula with good characteristics and stability.

AbstractThe primary aim of the Guangzhou Twin Eye Study (GTES) is to explore the impact that genes and environmental influences have on common eye diseases. Since 2006, approximately 1300 pairs of twins, aged 7–15 years, were enrolled at baseline. Progressive phenotypes, such as cycloplegic refraction, axial length, height and weight, have been collected annually. Nonprogressive phenotypes such as parental refraction, corneal thickness, fundus photo, intraocular pressure and DNA were collected once at baseline. We are collaborating with fellow international twin researchers and psychologists to further explore links with general medical conditions. In this article, we review the history, major findings and future research directions for the GTES.

Gas turbines (GTEs) are often utilised in harsh environments where the GT components, including compressor vanes and rotor blades, are subject to erosion damage by sand and dust particles. For instance, in a desert environment, the rate of damage made by solid particles erosion (SPE) becomes severe, and therefore results in degradation to the GTE parts, lowering the cycle efficiency, reducing the device lifetime, and increasing the overall cost of the operation. As such, understanding the erosion mechanism caused by solid particles and the effects associated with it is crucial for selecting the appropriate countermeasures and maintaining the system performance. This review paper provides a survey of the available studies on SPE effects on GTEs and surface protective coatings. Firstly, the ductile and brittle SPE mechanism is presented, as well as the ductile-brittle transition region. Then, an in-depth focus on the parameters associated with the SPE, such as particles properties and impingement conditions, is introduced. Furthermore, the existing theoretical models are shown and discussed. Afterwards, erosion resistant coating materials for surface protection and their selection criteria are covered in the review. Finally, the gap in knowledge and future research direction in the field of SPE on GTEs are provided.

Numerical results for the attenuation constant obtained by using the generalized telegraphist’s equations (GTEs) based electromagnetic analysis method and comparison with the HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) results are reported. To calculate the attenuation constant with the GTEs method, not only the amplitudes of the voltage modes but also the amplitudes of the current modes must be found. In this paper, it is demonstrated that the relationships reported by other authors for the amplitudes of the current modes are not correct and new ones are proposed. To validate these relationships, the attenuation constants for homogeneous and different partially dielectric-filled rectangular waveguides are computed for the fundamental propagation mode by using the GTEs based analysis method and the results are compared with those obtained with HFSS. It is shown that using the revised relationships for the amplitudes of the current modes, the GTE method can be used to compute accurately the propagation and attenuation constant, but only for propagation modes in which the components of the electric field are not oriented perpendicular to the interface between different dielectrics. This limitation is not due to the proposed current mode relationships, but is due to the GTE method which cannot highlight the electric field discontinuities.

Nowadays, unprecedented health challenges are urging novel solutions to address antimicrobial resistance as multidrug-resistant strains of bacteria, yeasts and moulds are emerging. Such microorganisms can cause food and feed spoilage, food poisoning and even more severe diseases, resulting in human death. In order to overcome this phenomenon, it is essential to identify novel antimicrobials that are naturally occurring, biologically effective and increasingly safe for human use. The development of gemmotherapy extracts (GTEs) using plant parts such as buds and young shoots has emerged as a novel approach to treat/prevent human conditions due to their associated antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory and/or antimicrobial properties that all require careful evaluations. Seven GTEs obtained from plant species like the olive (Olea europaea L.), almond (Prunus amygdalus L.), black mulberry (Morus nigra L.), walnut (Juglans regia L.), blackberry (Rubus fruticosus L.), blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum L.) and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) were tested for their antimicrobial efficiency via agar diffusion and microbroth dilution methods. The antimicrobial activity was assessed for eight bacterial (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica, Proteus vulgaris, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Listeria monocytogenes), five moulds (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus ochraceus, Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium expansum) and one yeast strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The agar diffusion method revealed the blackberry GTE as the most effective since it inhibited the growth of three bacterial, four moulds and one yeast species, having considered the total number of affected microorganism species. Next to the blackberry, the olive GTE appeared to be the second most efficient, suppressing five bacterial strains but no moulds or yeasts. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were then determined for each GTE and the microorganisms tested. Noticeably, the olive GTE appeared to feature the strongest bacteriostatic and bactericidal outcome, displaying specificity for S. aureus, E. faecalis and L. monocytogenes. The other GTEs, such as blueberry, walnut, black mulberry and almond (the list indicates relative strength), were more effective at suppressing microbial growth than inducing microbial death. However, some species specificities were also evident, while the blackcurrant GTE had no significant antimicrobial activity. Having seen the antimicrobial properties of the analysed GTEs, especially the olive and black mulberry GTEs, these could be envisioned as potential antimicrobials that might enhance antibiotic therapies efficiency, while the blackberry GTE would act as an antifungal agent. Some of the GTE mixtures analysed have shown interesting antimicrobial synergies, and all the antimicrobial effects observed argue for extending these studies to include pathological microorganisms.

Although three-dimensional (3D) co-culture of gingival keratinocytes and fibroblasts-populated collagen gel can mimic 3D structure of in vivo tissue, the uncontrolled contraction of collagen gel restricts its application in clinical and experimental practices. We here established a stable 3D gingival tissue equivalent (GTE) using hTERT-immortalized gingival fibroblasts (hGFBs)-populated collagen gel directly crosslinked with genipin/cytochalasin D and seeding hTERT-immortalized gingival keratinocytes (TIGKs) on the upper surface for a 2-week air–liquid interface co-culture. MTT assay was used to measure the cell viability of GTEs. GTE size was monitored following culture period, and the contraction was analyzed. Immunohistochemical assay was used to analyze GTE structure. qRT-PCR was conducted to examine the mRNA expression of keratinocyte-specific genes. Fifty µM genipin (G50) or combination (G + C) of G50 and 100 nM cytochalasin D significantly inhibited GTE contraction. Additionally, a higher cell viability appeared in GTEs crosslinked with G50 or G + C. GTEs crosslinked with genipin/cytochalasin D showed a distinct multilayered stratified epithelium that expressed keratinocyte-specific genes similar to native gingiva. Collagen directly crosslinked with G50 or G + C significantly reduced GTE contraction without damaging the epithelium. In summary, the TIGKs and hGFBs can successfully form organotypic multilayered cultures, which can be a valuable tool in the research regarding periodontal disease as well as oral mucosa disease. We conclude that genipin is a promising crosslinker with the ability to reduce collagen contraction while maintaining normal cell function in collagen-based oral tissue engineering.

La conversion d’énergie à partir de la chaleur perdue par effets thermoélectriques (effet Seebeck) est une nouvelle source d’énergie renouvelable potentielle. La technologie thermoélectrique (TE) est néanmoins limitée à des applications terrestres de niche du fait de son faible rendement (5-6 %), mais aussi à cause des défis technologiques à surmonter pour éviter une dégradation des générateurs TE (GTE) employés. Notre thèse s’inscrit dans cette problématique dans le cadre d'un programme de recherche soutenu par l’ANR (projet RELIATEG) incluant comme partenaires la société HotBlockOnBoard (HBOB), le CEA LITEN, le CIRIMAT et l'IJL. L'objectif est de fiabiliser les GTE à base de siliciures, Mg₂Si₁₋ₓSnₓ pour le type n et de MnSi₁₊ᵧ pour le type p, fabriqués par HBOB pour une utilisation à long terme au voisinage de 400-500°C. Notre rôle consiste principalement à comprendre les mécanismes conduisant à leur fragilisation, notamment en ce qui concerne les problèmes d'oxydation du matériau Mg₂Si₀,₆Sn₀,₄. Ceux-ci étant inévitables, nous nous sommes tournés vers la solution de trouver un revêtement protecteur et de tester la stabilité thermique sous air d’un matériau Mg₂Si₁₋ₓSnₓ, moins sensible. Après avoir établi une synthèse bibliographique traitant des notions de base de la TE, de l'état de l’art des matériaux TE et justifié le choix des matériaux utilisés par HBOB, nous présentons les diverses étapes de la fabrication des GTE et les techniques expérimentales utilisées pour caractériser la microstructure des matériaux TE et leur stabilité thermique. Les tests de performance réalisés sur des GTE à quatre jambes montrent que la puissance obtenue, mesurée jusqu'à 450°C, est reproductible pour les 25 modules testés. Elle est toutefois environ 25 % plus faible que celle que l'on pourrait atteindre avec un GTE parfait, comme le montre les simulations que nous avons réalisées à l'aide du logiciel Comsol MultiPhysics. Les tests de stabilité ont montré que les modules sont stables sous air à 250°C, durant 500 h ou sous 1000 cycles, et qu'ils commencent à se dégrader sous air dès 350°C par le biais d'un phénomène de peste lié à l'oxydation du matériau TE Mg₂Si₀,₆Sn₀,₄ du côté chaud du GTE. Sous vide, ce processus est ralenti mais la présence d'oxygène résiduel ne permet pas de totalement stabiliser le matériau. A 500°C sous air, la peste est observée dès 3 heures de test. Les tests d'oxydation menés sur les deux matériaux à teneur en Sn différente ont permis de montrer le rôle déterminant de l'étain sur les phénomènes d'oxydation. Un modèle expliquant le phénomène de peste a pu être développé grâce à l'analyse combinée des résultats obtenus par des mesures thermogravimétriques, microscopie électronique à balayage et diffraction des rayons X. En nous appuyant sur la bibliographie et sur les diagrammes de phases des différents systèmes, des revêtements protecteurs céramiques, siliciures métalliques, métaux et verres ont été étudiés. Plusieurs voies de dépôt ont été explorées : frittage par Spark Plasma Sintering, nickelage électrochimique, pack cémentation, dépôts par pulvérisation (slurry, PVD et spray). Energy conversion from waste heat through thermoelectric effects (Seebeck effect) is a potential new renewable energy source. The thermoelectric (TE) technology is nevertheless limited to niche terrestrial applications due to its low efficiency (5-6%), but also due to the technological challenges to be overcome to avoid a degradation of the TE generators (TEG). Our thesis is devoted to this problem within the framework of a research program supported by the ANR (RELIATEG project) including HotBlockOnBoard (HBOB), CEA LITEN, CIRIMAT and IJL as partners. The objective is to make reliable the TEG, manufactured by HBOB, based on silicides, Mg₂Si₁₋ₓSnₓ (n-type) and MnSi₁₊ᵧ (p-type), for long-term use in the vicinity of 400-500°C. Our main role is to understand the mechanisms leading to their embrittlement, particularly to the oxidation problems linked to the Mg₂Si₀,₆Sn₀,₄ material. As they are unavoidable, we turned to the solutions of finding a protective coating and/or testing the thermal stability under air of a Mg₂Si₁₋ₓSnₓ material, less sensitive to oxidation. After a bibliographical synthesis of the basic concepts of TE and of the state of the art of TE materials, the choice of materials used by HBOB have been justified. The various stages of TEG manufacturing and the experimental techniques used to characterize the microstructure of TE materials and their thermal stability are presented. The performance tests performed on TEGs show that the power obtained, measured up to 450°C, is reproducible for the 25 devices tested. However, it is about 25% lower than what one could achieve with a perfect TEG, as shown by the simulations we carried out using the Comsol MultiPhysics software. The stability tests showed that the devices are stable under air at 250°C, for 500 hours or under 1000 cycles, and that they begin to degrade under air at 350°C through a pesting phenomenon linked to the oxidation of Mg₂Si₀,₆Sn₀,₄. Under vacuum, this process is slowed down but the presence of residual oxygen does not completely stabilize the material. At 500°C under air, the pesting is observed from 3 hours of testing. The oxidation tests carried out on the two materials with different Sn content showed the significant role of tin on the oxidation phenomena. A model explaining the pesting phenomenon was developed by the combined analyses of results obtained by thermogravimetric measurements, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. On the basis of bibliography and phase diagrams of the differents systems, protective coatings based on ceramics, metallic silicides, metals and glasses have been studied. Several deposition methods were explored: sintering by Spark Plasma Sintering, electrochemical nickel plating, pack cementation, slurry, PVD and spray deposits. The most promising coatings were obtained with a glass whose CTE is close to that of the n-type material

Denna uppsats behandlar den nya prototypen för radiosystem som tagits fram inom projektet GTRS. Systemet jämförs med det äldre taktiska radiosystemet Radio 180 för att få fram vad som egentligen skiljer mellan dessa. Därefter behandlas Nordic Battlegroup 2011, där det utreds vilka uppgifter förbandet skall klara av och några typfall baserat på uppgifterna. Uppbyggnad och funktion för förbandets sambandssystem beskrivs också där själva kommunikationsnätet från Sverige till missionsområde avhandlas. Även de olika radioapparaterna som nyttjas och deras användningsområde behandlas. Detta används senare i en analys där först radioapparaternas skillnader utreds, därefter analyseras vad införandet av detta nya radiosystem skulle innebära för förbandet Nordic Battlegroup 2011. Uppsatsen kommer fram till att även om GTRS erbjuder ett merflexibelt nät med högre dataöverföringskapacitet än Ra 180 så finns det fortfarande utvecklingspotential innan det når full duglighet. Detta beror på att övriga delar som skulle kunna dra nytta av den högre dataöverföringshastigheten ännu inte är anpassade till detta. Därför är Ra 180 med sin DART och längre räckvidd fortfarande ett gångbart system, även om GTRS möjligheter kommeratt öka i takt med att ny kringutrustning införs.


This essay discusses the new prototype radio system developed by the project GTRS. This system is compared to the older tactical radiosystem Radio 180 to research what differences there are between the two. The Nordic Battlegroup 2011 is also presented, mainly which tasks the unit is supposed to beable to handle and some likely scenarios based on these tasks. The communications systems in the unit, from headquarters in Sweden and down to soldier level are presented complete with different radios used and what their capabilities are. After that, an analysis of the differences between the two radios is made which is followed by an analysis of what the introduction of GTRS could mean for the Nordic Battlegroup 2011. This analysis looks at both the technical and the tactical implications. The essay concludes that even though GTRS provides a more flexible net with higher bandwidth than Radio 180 there still is room for improvement before it can reach full usability. This is mainly because other parts of the system that could make use of the higher bandwidth are not yet adapted to this. That is why Radio 180 with the DART and its longer range of transmission still is capable system with the exception that the possibilities of GTRS will expand when new compatible peripherals.

IEEE 802.15.4 is a standard defined for wireless sensor network applications with limited power and relaxed throughput needs. The devices transmit data during two periods: Contention Access Period (CAP) by accessing the channel using CSMA/CA and Contention Free Period (CFP), which consists of Guaranteed Time Slots (GTS) allocated to individual devices by the network coordinator. The GTS is used by devices for cyclic data transmission and the coordinator can allocate GTS to a maximum of only seven devices. In this work, we have proposed two algorithms for an efficient GTS allocation. The first algorithm is focused on improving the bandwidth utilization of devices, while the second algorithm uses traffic arrival information of devices to allow sharing of GTS slots between more than seven devices. The proposed schemes were tested through simulations and the results show that the new GTS allocation schemes perform better than the original IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

Examensarbetet handlar om att utforska och utveckla det framtidsvisonära transportsystemet ”GTS Transportsystem” framtaget av GTS Stiftelsen. Detta med hjälp av frågeställningen: Hur ser framtidens GTS Transportsystem ut i ett användarcentrerat perspektiv? Inom en designprocess genomfördes ett omfattande researcharbete för att skapa en förståelse för vilka behov och krav som borde tillgodoses i det framtida transportsystemet. GTS studerades och analyserades för att få en djupare förståelse kring deras visioner, idéer, tekniska lösningar och hur väl genomtänkt de olika delarna var. Intervjuer med målgruppen människor med funktionsnedsättning, synliggjorde olika typer av problem som uppstår i dagens jämförbara transportsystem. Med hjälp av intervjudata och en analys kunde tre fiktiva personas skapas med tillhörande scenarier. En analys av ett framtida GTS scenario ledde till att problem kunde identifieras som sedan låg till grund för vidare arbete med framtagning av olika problemområden. Problemområdet som sedan valdes var stationer och hållplatser (i uppsatsen benämnd Terma). En idégenereringsfas ledde till nya idéer kring flöden, funktioner, gates och arkitektur. Det slutliga resultatet blev ett framtida Terma-koncept med en genomgående utformning för tillgänglighet, trygghet och innovation. I konceptet skapades en gate med fokus på säkerhet, en funktionell och öppen planlösning som förenklar resandet, samt en ny lösning kring kabinernas flöden runt och över byggnaden. Allt detta för att en framtida resa i GTS skall fungera säkert och smidigt.
The research was conducted in order to contribute to the general body of knowledge regarding the prospective transport system GTS Transport System developed by GTS Foundation. This dissertation will explore and further develop the GTS system. This was achieved with the research question: How does the future GTS Transport System look in a user-centered design perspective?   In a design process, a deep and comprehensive research laid the foundation in order to create an understanding of the needs and demands that would need to be fulfilled for the future transport system. The GTS Transport System was carefully studied and analyzed in order to reach a deeper understanding around its visions, ideas and technical solutions. Further it was studied in order to determine how well thought through the different feature where.   Interviews were conducted with a target group of people having a disability; this disclosed certain problems with today’s transport systems. With the support of the data gathered and an analysis, three fictive personas where created with associated scenarios.   An analysis of a future GTS scenario led to the discovery of certain problems and laid the foundation for further establishing areas in need of improvements. The areas that were chosen where stations and stopping places (in the dissertation called Terma).   An idea-generating phase led to new ideas about flow, functions, gates and architecture.   The results of the dissertation led to a concept about how the future transport Terma may be designed. With secure available and innovative gates, a well thought through layout that is available and safe for the people using the transport system. A new concept of flows where created which enabled the vessels to move around and over the building. This results in a smooth and safe travel experience.

Until recently, transit data lacked a common data format that could be used to share and integrate information among multiple agencies. In 2005, however, Google worked with Tri-Met in Oregon to create the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), an open data format now used by all transit agencies that participate in Google Maps. GTFS feeds contain data for scheduled transit service including stop and route locations, schedules and fare information. The broad adoption of GTFS by transit agencies has made it a de facto standard. Those agencies using it are able to participate in a host of traveler services designed for GTFS, most notably transit trip planners. Still, analysts have not widely used GTFS as a data source for transit planning because of the newness of the technology. The objectives of this project are to demonstrate that GTFS feeds are an efficient data source for calculating key transit service metrics and to evaluate the validity of GTFS feeds as a data source. To demonstrate GTFS feeds’ analytic potential, the author created a tool called GTFS Reader, which imports GTFS feeds into a database using open-source products. GTFS Reader also includes a series of queries that calculate metrics like headways, route lengths and stop-spacing. To evaluate the validity of GTFS feeds, annual vehicle revenue miles and hours from the National Transit Database (NTD) are compared to the calculated values from agencies whose GTFS feeds are available. The key finding of this work is that well-formed GTFS feeds are an accurate representation of transit networks and that the method of aggregation presented in this research can be used to effectively and efficiently calculate metrics for transit agencies. The daily aggregation method is more accurate than the weekly aggregation method, both introduced in this thesis, but practical limitations on processing time favor the weekly method. The reliability of GTFS feed data for smaller agencies is less conclusive than that of larger agencies because of discrepancies found in smaller agencies when their GTFS-generated metrics were compared to those in the NTD. This research will be of particular interest to transit and policy analysts, researchers and transit planners.

This research aims to understand the transition of established entrepreneurial firms into sustainable entrepreneurship ventures in Malaysia using a competency based perspective. The research considers established entrepreneurial firms attempts to acquire green technology financing. By observing a green technology financing scheme (GTFS) a competency trap is identified that constrains established entrepreneurial firms, regardless of their excellent financing track record and previous business success in other ventures. Utilising Rasmussen et al.’s (2011, 2014) evolutionary entrepreneurial competency framework, the research examines how established entrepreneurial firms develop the entrepreneurial competencies to overcome this trap and acquire green technology financing. By comparing different established entrepreneurial firms during the process to acquire financing, the research examined the GTFS contextual influence on the deployment of competencies, revealing the multi-faceted nature of the competency trap. In order to acquire GTFS financing the research identified two sets of entrepreneurial necessary competencies; (i) opportunity refinement competencies (ii) resource acquisition competencies. However, development of these competencies is influenced by the established entrepreneurial firms’ paths and the competency trap. Four different pathways to address the competency trap are highlighted. This emphasizes the need for more contextual based research at multiple levels of analysis to understand established entrepreneurial firms’ transition into sustainable entrepreneurship ventures.

AbstractThe use of tax expenditures (TEs) is an important fiscal practice that is often overlooked in public spending debates. The fiscal cost as well as the lack of effectiveness of TEs can be significant. This chapter describes the state of TE reporting across the world, focusing on Africa. It begins by explaining in detail what TEs are and what their role in government expenditure is. It proceeds by offering examples of the fiscal cost of these provisions, their (in)effectiveness, and the reasons why they are often hard to remove. The main portion of the chapter focuses on the lack and inconsistency of TE reporting. The chapter provides the first results of the “Global Tax Expenditures Database” (GTED), an ongoing project aiming to increase transparency and boost research in the TE field. The GTED reveals that over 64% of African countries do not provide any information on their TEs, while most of the countries that do report on TEs leave out important information such as the policy objectives and beneficiaries of those provisions. Lastly, using the available data, the chapter reports that, on average, TEs in African countries account for 2.8% of GDP and 17.8% of total tax revenue, and being as high as 7.8% (in Senegal) and 58.4% (in Mauritania), respectively.

Analysis of thermodynamic and thermal-engineering parameters of GTE for mercantile and naval marines was conducted. A conclusion was made that GTEs designed specially for application under sea conditions have the highest efficiency. This is the 36–37% efficiency for simple cycle GTEs. With application of the complex cycle, a notable increase in the engine efficiency could be attained, particularly, by use of structural ceramics (SCMs) on the basis of innovative materials and some novel technological and design concepts. It permits to raise the engine efficiency up to 50% even with the net power of 300–500 kW. Results of numerical calculations for single unit and thirty two module GTEs demonstrated as follows. With the same baseline conditions, a multi-module unit has the volume which is more than twice less and the mass more than five times lower. Though when the number of GTE modules still further increases, decreasing of the turbomachine efficiency becomes a negative factor. To compensate it, it is required to increase the air heater regeneration ratio, to apply helical-channel turbomachines made of heat resistant SCMs, etc. Advantages of multi-module GTEs are evident. Thus, the mean efficiency of a machine during its lifetime increases. The handling independency increases, too. A need in outages to repair machines is eliminated. The control, governing and protection systems become simpler. The fire- and explosion safety increases. In fact, all the designing procedure now reduces to identification of the module number under conditions specified and within a space targeted. As opposed to a conventional ship’s GTE design with the engine having only a single electric net power generator, the multi-module design allows a fast implementation of the entire wide spectrum of operation duties required.

Gas turbine engines (GTEs) are extensively used in locations with high humidity such as offshore platforms. However, in the dry regions, GTEs are often equipped with water spray inlet coolers for warm seasons. In both cases, the moisture affects the thermodynamic properties of the intake air and drifts the performance off the dry condition, especially during the warm days, when the moisture content of the air is high and the inlet air cooler is operational. In this paper, a detailed steady state model is proposed to simulate the GTE performance with the humid air, and it is linked with a thermodynamic model to quantify the total moisture content of the air after the cooler. The developed framework is used to analyze the operating data of a GTE during the three years of service. The results are then utilized for model-based performance monitoring of the GTE, using a recently introduced performance indicator. A comparative analysis is performed between the results received from the primary model overlooking the humidity effects, and the developed enhanced performance model with humidity effects. A better accuracy for the performance indicator was observed where the enhanced model is employed, suggesting the importance of considering the intake air humidity for model-based performance monitoring.

Nowadays 2D through-flow models are widespread for designing and analysis of a turbine. Unlike 2D calculations, the measurements show that a non-uniform inlet gas temperature profile is strongly attenuated to the outlet of a turbine. This attenuation can be taken into account in through-flow models only using some corrective coefficients. The objective of this work was to find such an empirical coefficient. The results of full-scale tests of several power GTUs and aviation GTEs were employed to obtain values of the temperature profile attenuation coefficient in the through-flow model for various span locations of airfoil rows. During the tests detailed radial-circumferential distributions of the gas temperature upstream of each of rows and downstream of the turbines were measured (in absolute motion for stator and in relative motion for rotor). The values of the attenuation coefficient for airfoil rows of the three front stages were obtained by means comparison of experimental and computed results. The experience shows that the attenuation coefficient is easily incorporated into the 2D gas-dynamic codes. This incorporation allows spanwise distributions of flow parameters to be predicted and the airfoil geometry and cooling mass flow to be chosen more correctly.

Abstract To achieve high power density Gas Turbine Engines (GTEs), R&D efforts have strived to develop machines that spin faster and run hotter. One method to achieve that goal is to use high temperature capable foil bearings. In order to successfully integrate these advanced foil bearings into GTE systems, a theoretical understanding of both bearing and rotor system integration is essential. Without a fundamental understanding and sound theoretical modeling of the foil bearing coupled with the rotating system such an approach would prove application efforts fruitless. It is hoped that the information provided in this paper will open up opportunistic doors to designs presently thought to be impossible. In this paper an attempt is made to describe how an advanced foil bearing is modeled for extreme high temperature operation in high performance turbomachinery including GTEs, Supercritical CO2 turbine generators and others. The authors present the advances in foil bearing capabilities that were crucial to achieving high temperature operation. Achieving high performance in a compliant foil bearing under the wide extremes of operating temperatures, pressures and speeds, requires a bearing system design approach that accounts for the highly interrelated compliant surface foil bearing elements such as: the structural stiffness and frictional characteristics of the underlying compliant support structure across the operating temperature and pressure spectrum; and the coupled interaction of the structural elements with the hydrodynamic pressure generation. This coupled elasto-hydrodynamic-Finite Element highly non-linear iterative methodology will be used by the authors to present a series of foil bearing design evaluations analyzing and modeling the foil bearing under extreme conditions. The complexity of the problem of achieving foil bearing system operation beyond 870°C (1600°F) requires as a prerequisite the attention to the tribological details of the foil bearing. For example, it is necessary to establish how both the frictional and viscous damping coefficient elements as well as the structural and hydrodynamic stiffness are to be combined. By combining these characteristics the influence of frictional coefficients of the elastic and an-elastic materials on bearing structural stiffness and hence the bearing effective coupled elasto-hydrodynamic stiffness coefficients will be shown. Given that the bearing dynamic parameters — stiffness and damping coefficients — play a major role in the control of system dynamics, the design approach to successfully integrate compliant foil bearings into complex rotating machinery systems operating in extreme environments is explored by investigating the effects of these types of conditions on rotor-bearing system dynamics. The proposed rotor/bearing model is presented to describe how system dynamics and bearing structural properties and operating characteristics are inextricably linked together in a manner that results in a series separate but intertwined iterative solutions. Finally, the advanced foil bearing modeling and formulation in connection with resulting rotor dynamics of the system will be carried out for an experimental GTE simulator test rig. The analytical results will be compared with the experiments as presented previously to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed method in a real world application [1].

A modern gas turbine engine (GTE) is a complex non-linear dynamic system with the mutual effect of gas-dynamic and thermal processes in its components. The engine development requires the precise real-time simulation of all main operating modes. One of the most complex operating modes for modeling is “cold stabilization”, which is the rotors acceleration without completely heated up the turbine elements. The dynamic heating problem is a topical practical issue. Solving the problem requires coordinating a gas-path model with heat and stress models, which is also a significant scientific problem. The phenomenon of interest is the radial clearances change during engines operation and its influence on engines static and dynamic performances. To consider the clearance change, it is necessary to synthesize the quick proceeding stress-state models (QPSSM) of a rotor and a casing for the initial temperature and dynamic heating. The unique feature of the QPSSM of GTEs is separate equation sets, which allow the heat exchange between structure elements and the gas (air) and the displacements of the turbine rotor and the casing. This ability appears as a result of determining the effect of each factor on different structural elements of the engine. The presented method significantly simplifies the model identification, which can be performed based on a precise calculation of the unsteady temperature fields of the structural elements and the variation of the radial clearance. Thus, the present paper addresses a new method to model the engine dynamics considering its heating up. The method is based on the integration of three models: the gas-path dynamics model, the clearance dynamics model and the model of the clearance effect on the efficiency. The paper also comprises the program implementation of the models. The method was tested by applying to a particular turbofan engine.

Abstract One of the most important units of small-size gas-turbine engines (GTE) is a turbine bladed disk, since it determines the total engine efficiency. Designing a turbine disks is a complex challenge due to the high loads and a large number of structural and technological constraints, as well as a variety of requirements to the bladed disks for small-size GTEs (higher efficiency, lower mass and adequate strength characteristics, etc.). Diverse requirements to the turbine bladed disks mean that modifying the structure in order to improve some characteristics will degrade other characteristics. A standard solution to this problem is to use the iterative approach, which reduces the design process to a consecutive iteration of setting and solving design problems concerning the bladed disk elements (blade and disk) separately for different aspects. The main drawback of this approach is its tremendous labor intensity and inferior quality of design, as this procedure does not consider the design object as a single entity. This paper proposes an approach to the turbine bladed disks design based on the use of a single multidisciplinary parametrized 3D model that contains several specialized submodels. These submodels define the essential computational regions, as well as the characteristics of the physical processes and phenomena in the object under study. The model also enables integration and interaction of the submodels in a single computational region. The single multidisciplinary model is modified and analyzed automatically, so the design problem is transformed into a multi-criteria optimization problem where the weight, gas dynamic and strength characteristics are used as criteria or constraints, and they are improved by varying the geometric parameters of the blade and disk. Each submodel simulates and analyzes the essential characteristics at the level comparable to the standard engineering calculations. Therefore, the designs obtained as a result of optimization do not need significant improvements, which facilitates and enhances the design process. The development of an integrated model is time consuming, but since the design and operation of bladed disks are similar, the created parametrized multidisciplinary 3D model can be used in the design of other similar disks after minor alternations taking into account the specifics of the new task.

Gas turbine engines (GTE) of complex cycles are more efficient in comparison to GTE of simple cycle, and they can be recommended for application in a ship propulsion complex. GTE’s representative of complex cycle is GTE with overexpansion turbine and heat regeneration, which has high efficiency, and which can provide heat energy to the consumers of specialized ships in co-generative mode of operation. GTE with R and OT is adapted for used in different conditions of ships’ operation. It has high power efficiency at partial loads due to the working process control in the engine. There are two applicable methods of getting required engine’s characteristics of GTE with heat regeneration at partial loads. If more constant production of heat energy is required at partial loads of the main engine, the method of air by-pass to the combustion chamber by recuperator is applied. Hereby, utilized heat is being redistributed towards the gas cooler boiler-utilizer increasing its power. For the increase of efficiency of GTE with R and OT at partial loads it is used the method of GTE’s characteristics change by application of variable area nozzles (VAN) of power turbine. VAN in GTE with R allows keeping initial temperature of gas in the engine close to nominal value at partial loads. If the efficiency of GTE with R and OT at nominal load is 20 % relatively higher, in this case when power is equal to 50%, the efficiency of GTE with R and OT is 30% higher in relation to Brayton cycle. In GTE with R and OT it is possible to apply two methods of working process control simultaneously in various regimes of ship operation.
