English Abstract: Instead of focusing directly on the epistemological problems facing the anthropologist, this paper aims to reverse the ethnographic lens and reflect first on what the ethnographic situation does for the ‘ethnographed’: what kind of work do the subjects of an inquiry engage in when they consent to an ethnographic relation? What affordances does it offer them? Briefly put, my answer to this question would be that it allows them to experiment novel ways of giving shape to and translating forms of reflexivity that are always historically and politically situated. If this is the case, it follows that the ethnographer is involved in translating a process of translation he or she has elicited, indeed co-produced with the subjects of the inquiry.

Abstract This article attempts to write pioneering filmmaker Paulin Vieyra and his little-studied first film, Afrique sur Seine (1955), back into the history of French, African, and late colonial/early post-colonial cinema by exploring two interwoven threads. First, a close analysis of the film's technical and aesthetic affinities with the nascent French New Wave, particularly the work of ethnographer Jean Rouch; second, a contextualized reading of the film's anti-colonialist discourse and commentary on the status of Blacks in French society at the end of the colonial period, paying special attention to Vieyra's career arc, his political sensibilities, and the circumstances surrounding the film's production, extended disappearance from view, and reemergence.

Purpose Drawing on part of a French doctorate research journey, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate how an initial research design gets to be questioned and deconstructed when confronted to fieldwork. Design/methodology/approach The paper reflects on the second year of the doctoral project when the theoretical research object that had been built during the first year was confronted to fieldwork, driving the author to reshape the initial research question. Findings The paper explains how doing ethnographic work helped the author to deconstruct the author’s own theoretical and epistemological assumptions. The author started to investigate on the uses of pupils’ “mental suffering” in French upper secondary schools and administration in order to understand the labelling process. The author explains how fieldwork, writing and peer-reviewing made the author realise that the author was not focussing on the appropriate categories. Throughout the reflection, the paper highlights the epistemological shift that this journey reveals. Originality/value This paper aims to contribute to methodological debates scrutinising the black box of the research process. It aims to be helpful to those experiencing for the first time the chaos of reformulating the research object.

Making the sociology of the body as an independent scientific discipline based on the work of the French social anthropology. Problematization of physicality in anthropology actually begins with the category of “techniques of the body”. This concept was first introduced in the scientific turnover by the French anthropologist and ethnographer Marcel moss. Described techniques are based on extensive ethnographic material on the basis of which he formulates two basic classifications. After Moss, the category of “techniques of the body” continues to develop his student Andre Leroy-Gourhan and exploring physicality through the lens of instrumentality. This article also presents a description of the work “Techniques of the body” by French ethnologist K. Levi-Stross and his overall assessment of the work of M. moss, with personal additions and comments. As previously indicated, the problematization of the “body”, founded by M. moss in anthropology, became the Foundation for building theories that work with physicality and in other disciplines. In the present work shows the transition on an interdisciplinary level. It is associated with the figure of the French philosopher, historian and sociologist Michel Foucault. The body in his concept considers as the object of power. Continuing the tradition established by its predecessors in the mainstream of anthropology, Foucault brings the issue of physicality to a new level, laying the foundations of the sociology of the body.Showing that the body is not just an appendage, but a full-fledged object of study, M. moss not only expanded the subject field of anthropology to include physicality, but also opened the opportunity to develop this category for sociology, linguistics, psychology, history, religion and other disciplines.

In the last few years a number of studies have explored the epistemological uses of the ethnographer’s gender in sociological research and the effects of gender on research results. These studies aim either to analyze how ethnographers can use their “gender” to open up observational possibilities, or to analyze observations made while maintaining as much control as possible over the conditions of their sociological interpretation. But relatively few papers discuss using ethnography to study gendered social relations. This article applies that approach to the observations made in our field study of the “world” of French jazz. We present here three of the main ways that the epistemological enrichment offered by ethnography may in turn enrich analysis of gender relations: access to “invisible” practices, analysis in terms of “the arrangement between the sexes", the possibility of generalization.

AbstractTwo young men met on a quay at the port in Conakry, Guinea in 1946. One, waiting dockside, was Mamadou Madeira Keita, a low-level civil servant and archivist. Years later, when he was a political prisoner in the Malian Sahara, some would argue that he was “the first francophone African ethnographer.” The other, descending the gangplank, was the Frenchman Keita had come to meet. Georges Balandier was unknown then, but would soon become a leading figure in the fields of sociology and anthropology. The encounter between Keita and Balandier was foundational for both men. Conakry incubated a canonical intervention—Balandier's 1951 article “La Situation Coloniale”—that some attribute an ancestral role in a particular francophone tradition of postcolonial thought. Conakry, and Guinea at large, was also the crucible in which a powerful anti-colonial politics were forged by Madeira Keita and his allies. In this particular corner of West Africa, anti-colonial politics and an emergent, politically engaged social science conditioned each other, like the two strands of a double helix, each a necessary yet ultimately contingent element of the other's structure. Though these links did not last long, they had important effects. This article, by emphasizing the contingencies of the two men's intertwined biographies, seeks to carry out Balandier's dictate to emphasize the “concrete” nature of this particular situation in order to understand how and why anti-colonial politics and an innovative sociology converged and ultimately diverged.

In 1894, the French scientist Joseph de Baye (1853–1931), an archaeologist, ethnographer, historian, traveler and collector, had visited the excavations and Museum in Chersonesus for the first time. In 1905, Baron de Baye had revisited the Crimea and the Museum in Chersonesus. The memory of this remains on the pages of «Books for visitors of the Chersonesus Museum», stored in the archive of the Museum-reserve. The Baron was personally acquainted with K. K. Kosciusko-Valyuzhinich, who was the first head of the excavations and Museum in Chersonesus, also was in correspondence with him and repeatedly donated his own works to the Museum library. The scientific library of the state Museum-reserve «Tauric Chersonese» has a very representative collection of his works, characterized by a unique composition, the history of receipt, the presence of gift inscriptions and other proprietary signs. Baron de Baye popularized the historical and archaeological antiquities of the South of Russia among his colleagues in France, Chersonesus in particular, and did a lot for establishment of strong scientific and cultural ties between France and Russia, including in the field of archaeology.

This essay examines the ethnographer’s “underground” as a foundational research space lacking in light: the light provided by being fully aware of our motives and by illuminating the “lack” that leads us to look for something in others, who then become the human instruments of our research. From as early as the 1930s, the ethnographic “I” was central to how Michel Leiris viewed his engagement with research, so much so that the French writer and researcher is an often forgotten or underestimated precursor of a type of reflexivity that has placed questioning research subjects at the heart of (auto)ethnography. This essay returns to the forms taken by Leiris’s writing, viewing them as a foundational impulse for an autoethnography that takes a detour to the self via others without this simply being a return to the self.

In a 1966 lecture to the american anthropological association, Ray L. Birdwhistell presented a silent film showing families visiting elephant exhibits at zoos around the world. This film, along with the audio of Birdwhistell's lecture and an epilogue, was then released in 1969 by the East Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute with the title Microcultural Incidents in Ten Zoos. Using his theory of kinesics (roughly, the study of “body language”), a “context control method,” and “purposive” filming of families viewing elephant exhibits, Birdwhistell hoped to demonstrate that physical gestures are not universal but are rather culturally specific and only comprehensible in carefully described contexts (fig. 1). Microcultural Incidents positions the ethnographer as a detached observer dissecting scenes for his audience, translating the language of gestures with the use of a slow-motion projector he calls a “perceptiscope.” Even with his many hours of raw footage and the subsequent analysis with the perceptiscope, however, Birdwhistell's conclusions are remarkably small. Among the gems we learn, for example, are that on trips to the zoo English fathers are the keepers of food and knowledge and unselfconsciously teach their children to speak to elephants and that when the French stick their kids' hands into elephant trunks, the children look at their hands with a mixture of surprise and horror before wiping them off on their clothes. Still, for Birdwhistell kinesics held the promise of revealing hidden truths about people and cultures.

This essay provides an overview of actor-network theory (ANT) and its potential interest for sociolegal scholars. It focuses on Bruno Latour's 2002 ethnography of La fabrique du droit: une ethnographie du Conseil d’État [The factory of law: an ethnography of the Conseil d’État] (2002b), which provides an analysis of the workings of the French Conseil d’État. The essay seeks to introduce non-French-reading sociolegal researchers to this work and draws out methodological and theoretical implications for research on legal institutions, legal knowledge, and bureaucracies.

Our study is based on the sociological side of the numerous organized actions dealing with the implementation of the politics of the French Tennis Federation (FFT) among and throughout its territorial units. The goal of this research was to analyze the effects engendered by the double process of devolution –the passing of power- and professionalization, especially on the governance of these organized actions. We wanted here to show that the French Tennis Federation’s head office, confronted with the well-known threats concerning the French Grand Slam Roland Garros and in the objective of preserving its model of functioning, has engaged into a transformation of the territorialisation of its actions. To this end, it defined a new model of regulation between the different organizations it is composed of. This change is now being implemented within the regional tennis leagues and departmental committees.First, we will show how the French Tennis Federation’s head office is using the economic context in order to make its governance better and to implement a new model of management of its territorial units. Then, the second part is an analysis of the development of this federal action that is more of a process than a contract. Furthermore, this action is marked by the inter-organizational nature given to the manner of solving problems of territorial governance so that the French Tennis Federation can become more flexible and consistent. In the last part of the dissertation, we try to put the effects of these new federal rules into perspective. This is done by showing that the French Tennis Federation has in fact largely taken advantage of the changing dynamics that was already being put into action among the regional tennis leagues, even if this dynamics was highly different in matters of time and functioning depending on the territories concerned

This present study has the purpose of examining some specific parts of George Bataille´s production and action that correspond with the beginning of French anthropology institutionalization (1920s and 1930s), when the author finds himself immersed in the Documents, Doctrines Archélogie Beaux-Arts Ethnographie (1929-1930) magazine project and building a very close relationship with the professionals involved in the publications creation. By resuming Batailles first occupation as paleographer archivist at École des chartes and his primary written pieces and interests, among which is the anthropology of Marcel Mauss, the work is dedicated to build connections between his job inside French libraries and his activities as a writer from 1918 to 1930, when his interests were focused on highlighting the links between these dimensions and the constitution of the museums in France - especially the one that will culminate at the Musée de l\'Homme (1937). The experiences in the libraries, museums and the magazine put Bataille before the classification and filing of objects and documents. His interest in this path that searches for relating the institutionalization of the ethnographic discipline in France connected to framing ideas, cataloging and archiving documents in museums and the creational process of the Dictionary of the magazine helps to illuminate a double critical intervention that consists in building a movement, an offshoot of thinking. This different perspective offers us another look to the means through which the reflections on the place discipline stories and its practitioners have been experienced.

The present study refers to a qualitative inquiry, of the ethnographic kind, towards the comprehension and identification of the so-called alternative pedagogical and personals of the professors of the RME/POA. In this inquiry I searched for the following problem of research: what the professors of physical education of the RME/POA have deed in the practical pedagogical one and of personal life for avoid the stress and the exhaustion in function of the circumstances of work in a context of partner-cultural changes? Therefore, the objective of this study was identify and understand the pedagogical and personal alternatives of these professors to a void, surpass and minimize the stress caused by the educational work. For ends of understanding, in this I study what did I name like personal alternatives was taken only as measure of influence to the pedagogical work, once the objective of this study was not to go through personal backgrounds of life of the professors-collaborating ones. The procedures and information instruments to obtain the development of this study were: the participant observation, the interview is structured, newspaper of field and analysis of documents. The fieldwork had a total time of duration of ten months, of the which eight months were of contact with the professors-collaborating, and two months were of researches dedicated exclusively to documents analysis and bibliographical yardstick. As part of my methodological options, during the field inquiry in the field I decided to work with two schools and six collaborating professors, to guarantee the typological representative. From the information it was possible the construction of the three categories of analysis of this study: first, the reorganization of the educational work; to second, to double face of the bond and the dialogue; to third, the path in the alternatives of the professors.

This thesis considers the relationship between soteriology, missiology and pedagogy in fresh expressions of church. Having identified the key theological and pedagogical challenges for the fresh expressions of church movement, three heuristic models of the dominant contemporary approaches to Christian education are identified, positing a direct relationship between soteriological and missiological beliefs and the consequential pedagogical praxis of Christian communities. The methodology of the qualitative research is shown to be grounded within the field of practical theology and utilizes a critical realist framework for the ethnographic approach undertaken in the participant observation of three fresh expressions of church. The pedagogical praxis, soteriological and missiological beliefs of the three communities are thus outlined and analysed, allowing the ethnographic data to critique, and be critiqued by, the heuristic models put forward. The three models are shown to be in part upheld by the praxis of the three communities whilst the data analysis challenges the integrity of the theological diversity of the fresh expressions of church movement and calls for further research to be undertaken on identifying the nature and purpose of Christian education with, and for, the unchurched.

Since the pioneering involvement of the multidisciplinary network Langage et Travail [Language and Work] in the early 1980s, researchersin the fields of linguistics and occupational science have highlighted the growing importance of the language element and more broadly theinteractional element of work, especially with the increased importance of service activities. Our research is in the field of language studies involved in the area of vocational training, which has been developed over the last few yearsin the French-speaking sector. The first research work conducted in this field made it possible to better define the importance of language andinteractions in the training curriculum, both as vectors for the transmission of vocational practice and knowledge and as subjects to be taught. From a perspective inspired by the linguistic socialization paradigm, this work is based on a collaborative ethnography conducted over two yearswithin a vocational degree course (Bachelors) in Catering and Hotel Management at the Institut Paul Bocuse (Ecully, France). The aim was toanalyze, then improve the process of the transmission-acquisition of interactional skills in catering and restaurant service. In Part One we begin by analyzing, with a fairly broad focus, the place of interactional skills in the picture emerging from discussions aboutservice roles in restaurant catering, as well as that in the advice relating to different educational and professional sources and some types oftraining. Then in Part Two we studied, with a more specific focus, the way in which their transmission is handled in different training contexts(classes) of the above-mentioned course at the Institut Paul Bocuse. We focus even more closely in order to concentrate on training in the trainingrestaurants of the establishment studied, at the very specific level of the interactions between the students and others involved in the activity (headwaiter-instructors, chefs and customers). The results reveal a low level of responsibility for the transmission of these skills in the training practicescurrent in these restaurants used to emphasize the procedures and actions of service. In this respect, they bring to light in the service practicesshown in these dining rooms, a collective and shared dynamic that helps beginners to cooperate in the professional conduct of the activity andunderstand the different issues it covers for those involved. In the third part of the thesis, we present the approach to training engineeringconducted in close collaboration with the service staff instructors responsible for professional practice in the institution’s training restaurants. Theaim of this engineering approach is to fill in the “gaps in what is said” in training, and to implement exercises in the targeted skills, postulated asan intangible added value brought to the physical service of a meal, in the form of information, advice and more generally support for thecustomer’s culinary experience. To conclude this final part, we report on the effects observed in students’ service performance following theincorporation of the changes made to the training course.Located in the area where the educational sciences and language sciences intersect, ultimately this research is intended to make acontribution to the field of study, still little investigated, of the interactional element in vocational training

Consumer research oriented on empowering consumer practices in marginalized spaces is rarely focused on those living in deprived neighbourhoods. The recent concept of spatial vulnerability introduces an approach to understand the practices of "vulnerable" consumers through the analysis of spaces of their creativity and alternative access to consumption. By conducting a multisite ethnography in two deprived neighbourhoods in Lyon agglomeration, our dissertation examines the meaning of microcultures of young consumers from these neighbourhoods in managing spatial vulnerability. Our data show that adolescents’ collective coping strategies are both supported by and dependent on local socio-educational institutions. The institutional dependence has a double meaning – i.e. as an indicator of consumption inadequacy, and as a source of creative resistance to spatial vulnerability and of alternative consumption. From the theoretical perspective, we complete an understanding of consumer vulnerability and their coping strategies through the resource-control interplay by adding to it a collective level of consumers’ resources and control of vulnerability. Through our study context we extend the concept of consumption inadequacy by introducing a persistent lack of access to cultural experiences, thus reflecting social deprivation and the potential way towards social and market exclusion. Our dissertation also provides a guidance for future research and offer recommendations for public policy interventions and cultural institutions actions

AbstractThe sessions of the Ouvéa local council attract the ethnographer’s attention because of the discrepancy between their discussions and local daily life on the island. On the one hand, these sessions look like any other local council sessions, including those of metropolitan France. But on the other, they also present various peculiarities characteristic of Ouvéa’s social and cultural context. As elsewhere in the world, the organisation of political power observed and experienced during local council sessions is not simple. On the contrary, it exhibits hybrid characteristics from both a French institutional republican political world and from the so-called Kanak customary political universe. This chapter explores what J.-M. Tjibaou named “colonisation within the Republic” (Tjibaou, La présence Kanak. O. Jacob, Paris, 1996) by exploring this aspect of hybridity in a case study based on a long-term ethnography of local political practices and, more particularly, of the local council sessions held between 2007 and 2010.

AbstractHow can being a French woman of Afghan origin be an asset and an obstacle in conducting research along the borderlands of Badakhshan between Tajikistan and Afghanistan? This essay draws on field anecdotes which fostered critical thinking about my positionality as a French-Afghani woman. While my French passport symbolized my foreign identity, having personal ties with Badakhshan made me not “just a foreigner” due to my Afghan heritage. I argue that having a plural identity is just as helpful in conducting ethnographic research as it can be difficult to maintain the necessary distance from the object of study and to keep my collaborators safe.

AbstractThis chapter contends with the discursive turn in which images of social structure and social change shifted from anatomicalconceptual metaphors to relational thinking that captures social structure as a complex articulation of interlinked ideological, political, and economic instances. The examination begins with one of the most influential takes in the so-called return to Marx, addressing the Althusserian theory of ideology, which discourse theorists have accused of ‘yoking together’ a totality in connection with the larger structure of society in ideological terms. In fact, Althusser and his colleagues studied ideology’s practical application as a discursive interpellation of subjects. When discourse theory ultimately prevailed, it had adapted this part of the theory of ideology, while the concept of the capitalist mode of production has been excised from sociological discussions. Informed by awareness of ‘the spectre of Marx(ism)’, where social sciences are haunted by the ghostly notions of class-struggle and bourgeois ideology, this chapter turns attention to the less famous modes-of-production controversy in French new economic anthropology, which drew ethnographers’ gaze to class, ethnicity, and gender issues.

Nichita Parfenie Smochina left us a rich ethnographic and folkloric heritage. He is the first member of the Romanian Academy among the Transnistrian Romanians, inhabitants for centuries on the lands between the Dniester and the Bug, elected as an honorary member of the Romanian Academy on June 2, 1942. The Bessarabian Stefan Ciobanu was also part of the composition of the commission that recommended him. At that time, the newcomer to the Romanian Academy was known as an ethnographer, folklorist, sociologist, historian and publicist. Nichita Smochină has eight articles published in French, three articles in German, two articles published in Italian and two articles in Russian. He published 63 works in Romanian. We mention some of N. Smochină's ethnological and folklore studies: „Duminica Mare la moldovenii de peste Nistru” („Great Sunday among the Moldovans across the Dniester”) (1924), „Craciunul la moldovenii de peste Nistru” („Christmas among the Moldovans across the Dniester") (1925), „Anul Nou la romanii de peste Nistru” („New Year among the Romanians across the Dniester") (1925), „Boboteaza la românii transnistreni” („Epiphany among the Transnistrian Romanians”) (1927), „Prohoadele la moldovenii de peste Nistru” („The burials among the Moldovans across the Dniester”) (1927), „Iarba verde la moldovenii de peste Nistru” („Green Grass among the Moldovans across the Dniester”) (1927), „Din literatura populară la românii de peste Nistru” („From the Popular Literature of the Romanians Across the Dniester”) (1939), „Primele ctitorii între Nistru și Bug” („The First Foundations between the Dniester and the Bug”) (1942), „Ctitorii românești la răsărit de Bug” („Romanian Founders to the East of the Bug”)(1942) and others.

Languages in Canada, especially French, continue to reflect the history and power domination of its European origins. French is one of the official languages of Canada, but is also a minority language for some of its communities outside of the province of Québec, which is situated in Eastern Canada. It is protected by strong ideological and political influence, and by law. In this paper, I would like to reflect on how historical, cultural, and social aspects of French are reproduced and also on how transnational fluidity and multilingual practices are deconstructing or unbounding the idea of how French is seen in one Canadian province: Alberta. This Western Province has a strong conservative base and still has issue with French being an official language, a reminiscence of the past. Drawing on my work (Roy 2020), I take a sociolinguistic for change perspective, where historical and social understandings allow for critical view of ideologies and social change. I also examine and investigate social processes (e.g., social categorization, marginalization, etc.), and how ideologies can impact as well as impede processes of social identity construction and socialization into language pedagogies. In addition, I employ Pennycook and Makoni’s (2020) idea that, as researchers, we will self-reflect and be open to adopt a dialectic and multiple perspectives on the data collected. My data arises from longitudinal and sociolinguistic ethnographic studies in Alberta over a period of 15 years. Here, I interviewed participants (students, parents, administrators, teachers) in schools, particularly French immersion schools, as well as outside schools, in order to locate discourses related to French, where those discourses come from, and the long-term effects of those discourses, particularly for those learning French. I also include new data collected with multilingual students learning French. By looking at new discourses from multilingual youth learning French, and by observing their repertoires, I can demonstrate how the ‘old’ can be unbounded by youth’s everyday practices.

The exhibition space of a Collector's House Museum, the specific case of the Ema Klabin House Museum (HMEK), offers the field of exhibition design a unique place for research due to its nature, which moves from the private to the public and presents artifacts that allow entering the biography of objects and understanding them from a material culture perspective. The present research, still in progress, has as a case study, the environment of the Dining Room at HMEK, which evokes, more than any other room, domesticity and the memory of home while at the same time convoking the experience of the museum space. The research proposes the centrality of the Dining Room both in the practices of the former residence and in the discursive elaboration of the current museum. In this context and in the proposal of this research, the study of the Dining Room, its materialities, uses and spatial organization in both historical moments is an exemplary case for the implementation of research in a house museum, serving its study, based on the indicated variables, to highlight possibilities in this type of institution based on its physicality. The former residence of collector, businesswoman and patron Ema Gordon Klabin houses a multicultural collection that encompasses visual arts, ethnographic objects, books, furniture and decorative arts, exhibited in preserved environments from a house register with exhibition design that highlights the practices of the house, collector and building of modernized classical architecture. It is considered that artifacts are memory supports, vectors capable of preserving or reviving them, provoking relationships between what has been experienced and the situations of the present time. The Dining Room, used for diplomatic and social purposes, is a space measuring 4.80m X 5.30m and connects to the social rooms of the house with a large glass door accessing the external patio, environment with tropical plants and an Italian fountain. It is accessed through a gallery - a must-see for visitors to the house and now, to the museum - and the living room. On the opposite wall, a camouflaged door accesses the kitchen and service areas – currently the museum's reception area – where the French service was carried out. Currently, the Dining Room is organized in accordance with photographs and other historical records that attest to its use before its change to museum status. It exhibits documents and objects that attest to the memory of the uses and customs of this space, for example, the Reception Book, in which the hostess described each event, her guests and the planning of the reception. The research proposes an understanding of the cultural trajectory of objects and the implication of design in the activation of private memories of a domestic environment that, by becoming a museological space, provokes collective memories through its exhibition design, investigating the application of design to address the feedback between experience and history.

The current county of Maramureş is made up of four ethnographic areas, geographically, historically and ethnographically distinct, being an ancient Romanian hearth with history chiseled in wood and stone, in soul and in verb. These are called countries of Maramureş, and namely: Maramureşului Country, or Historical Marmaureşul or Voivodal, Lapuşului Country, Chioarului Country and last but not least, Codrului Country. One of the most controversial countries of Maramureş, Ţara Codrului, covers a rather narrow area compared to other ethno-folkloric areas, the ethno-cultural space of this area currently falls administratively in the counties of Maramureş, Satu Mare and Sălaj, although in in the past they belonged to Sălaj county, most of the localities being integrated into the Cehu Silvaniei network. The identification of ancient customs and traditions preserved to this day or the reconstitution of some long-forgotten customs or traditional occupations from the folklore area of Maramures Ţara Codrului would lead to the valorization of the way of transmitting local values, customs, occupations, beliefs and symbols shared by the community, so that, subsequently, they are implemented in the daily life of the new generations. Being one of the most important traditional dances of our country, the Caluşari dance dates back to the pre-Christian period, being related to the ancient cult of the Sun. Considered by some specialists as the decayed descendant of an ancient ritual, coming from the mists of time, this particularly spectacular Romanian folk dance is included in the heritage of humanity. The ritual dance of the Caluşaris, of high artistic value of Romanian folklore, is our symbol for the scenes of the world; it is the emblem that connects equally to history and myth, without ignoring its semantic and value universality. This living symbol of our culture represents the uniqueness of the Romanian people, both through the movements of the footmen and through their clothing. It must be emphasized that the people regarded the game of the Gags as an unusual fact, because the energy and frenzy that the Gags displayed during the game did not seem natural to them, perpetuating the idea that they are led by a supernatural force that gives them powers. In fact, it’s about the enthusiasm, passion and joy with which everyone interprets the role they have in this show, because in the end, the dance of the Horsemen is a majestic show, performed in the purest and most authentic style. In 1907 George Pop from Băseşti, driven by the desire to have an authentic Romanian dance, brought a master, Dr. Iustin C. Iuga from Alba Iulia, who stayed in Băseşti for three months and trained the troupe group that had its first official representation on the day of the great TRIBUN . Later, the Caluşari bands participated in all Astra events or other important events of the time because leading a national dance band was an occasion of pride and national affirmation, the dance of the Caluşaris from Transylvania becoming a national emblem for the artistic expression of the leading Romanian villages. It was believed, in that day that through this dance one contributes to the formation and strengthening of the spiritual unity of the national consciousness, because those who dance the Căluşarul can only be Romanians in origin. Băseşti commune is an area where the authenticity and values of Romanian folklore are preserved. Included in the community known generically under the term Şara Codrului, an area strongly impregnated with local traditions and customs, Băseşti remains a land of preservation of traditions and customs that have long since passed. For more than 100 years, in Băseşti, the bands of gaggles have appeared on the country’s stages, expressing the desire of Romanians everywhere to be united under a single, unique and unbroken banner, thus perpetuating the dream of the great tribune, George Pop of Băseşti. The stage appearances of the two caluşari formations, the big team and the small team, from Cluj and Baia Mare in the 80s, represented crucial moments for this dance, which has now become a constant habit in the lives of the people of Basăşti. The simultaneous dance of the two generations of gaggles symbolizes its antiquity and continuity in our traditional culture. Thus, the constancy and antiquity of the dance of the Caluşari from Băseşti gives it the right to be called a custom specific to Băseşti, with all the rights that derive from it. The dream of a human intertwined with the beauty of this beautiful dance of the Caluşaris, against the background of passion and dedication of the members of the formations established over time, make history in Băseşti, representing a reason for national and, above all, local pride. If the glorious past is the basic piece in maintaining our national consciousness, the present is the link between it and the young saplings, the future generations that can be formed in the spirit of love for nation and country, with the due place given to the elements of national identity, and of course with love for the perpetuation of traditions and customs, especially arousing and developing the passion to play the dance of the Caluşar from Băseşti, this should be a reason for pride and joy for them, like their ancestors. Any spectator who has the opportunity to watch the dance of the Caluşari from Băseşti can claim that it was shown to him in all its archaic splendor, reinforcing his feeling that Romanians have.
