For fixed l≥0 and m≥1, let Xn0, Xn1,..., Xnl be independent random n × n matrices with independent entries, let Fn0 := Xn0, Xn1-1,..., Xnl-1, and let Fn1,..., Fnm be independent random matrices of the same form as Fn0 . We show that as n → ∞, the matrices Fn0 and m−l+1/2Fn1 +...+ Fnm have the same limiting eigenvalue distribution. To obtain our results, we apply the general framework recently introduced in Götze, Kösters, and Tikhomirov 2015 to sums of products of independent random matrices and their inverses.We establish the universality of the limiting singular value and eigenvalue distributions, and we provide a closer description of the limiting distributions in terms of free probability theory.

Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring (FNM) has been widely accepted as an adjunct during parotid surgery to facilitate identification of the facial nerve (FN) main trunk, dissection of FN branches, confirmation of FN function integrity, detection of FN injury and prognostication of facial expression after tumor resection. Although the use of FNM in parotidectomy is increasing, little uniformity exists in its application from the literature. Thus, not only are the results of many studies difficult to compare but the value of FNM technology is also limited. The article reviews the current literature and proposes our standardized FNM procedures during parotid surgery, such as standards in FNM setup, standards in general anesthesia, standards in FNM procedures and application of stimulus currents, interpretation of electrophysiologic signals and prediction of the facial expression outcome and pre-/post-operative assessment of facial expressions. We hope that the FNM standardized procedures will provide greater uniformity, improve the quality of applications and contribute to future research.

If 0 < m < n, we consider the quotient space Fnm (X) = Fn (X)/Fm (X). Given a mapping f from X into X, we consider the induced mappings fn from Fn (X) into Fn (X) and fnm from Fnm (X) into Fnm (X). In this paper we study the relations among the dynamics of the mappings f, fn, and fnm and we answer some questions, by F. Barragán, A. Santiago-Santos and J. Tenorio, related to the properties: minimality, irreducibility, strong transitive and turbulence.

Frontonasal malformation (FNM) is a developmental field defect representing abnormal morphogenesis of the frontonasal eminence. The oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS) has been used to describe a broader range of first and second branchial-arch defects including hemifacial microsomia and Goldenhar's syndrome. A combination of FNM and OAVS has been described in the literature in 13 cases. This condition has been labeled as the oculoauriculofrontonasal syndrome, as well as ophthalmofrontonasal dysplasia. We have evaluated four patients with both FNM and OAVS. The pattern of malformation involves only the craniofacies: they have no vertebral defects, heart disease, or encephaloceles. The categorization of these four individuals and those in the literature raises interesting issues regarding syndrome classification. Originally, it was suggested that perhaps this disorder was a variation of Goldenhar's syndrome. However, now that it has become evident that FNM and OAVS are malformation patterns of etiologic and presumably pathogenetic heterogeneity, a more likely hypothesis is that when these two defects occur together, this represents a unique syndrome pattern. The purpose of this article is to suggest that the combination of OAVS and FNM may be a distinct entity, representing a discreet subset of patients.

The fuzzy non-metric model (FNM) is a representative non-hierarchical clustering method, which is very useful because the belongingness or the membership degree of each datum to each cluster can be calculated directly from the dissimilarities between data and the cluster centers are not used. However, the original FNM cannot handle data with uncertainty. In this study, we refer to the data with uncertainty as “uncertain data,” e.g., incomplete data or data that have errors. Previously, a methods was proposed based on the concept of a tolerance vector for handling uncertain data and some clustering methods were constructed according to this concept, e.g. fuzzyc-means for data with tolerance. These methods can handle uncertain data in the framework of optimization. Thus, in the present study, we apply the concept to FNM. First, we propose a new clustering algorithm based on FNM using the concept of tolerance, which we refer to as the fuzzy non-metric model for data with tolerance. Second, we show that the proposed algorithm can handle incomplete data sets. Third, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm based on comparisons with conventional methods for incomplete data sets in some numerical examples.

The interaction between bacteria and fibronectin is believed to play an important role in the pathogenicity of clinically important Gram-positive cocci. In the present study, we identified a gene encoding a predictedfibronectin-binding protein ofEnterococcus faecium(fnm), a homologue ofStreptococcus pneumoniae pavA, in the genomes ofE. faeciumstrain TX82 and all other sequencedE. faeciumisolates. Full-length recombinant Fnm from strain TX82 bound to immobilized fibronectin in a concentration-dependent manner and also appeared to bind collagen type V and laminin, but not other proteins, such as transferrin, heparin, bovine serum albumin, mucin, or collagen IV. We demonstrated that the N-terminal fragment of Fnm is required for full fibronectin binding, since truncation of this region caused a 2.4-fold decrease (P< 0.05) in the adhesion ofE. faeciumTX82 to fibronectin. Deletion offnmresulted in a significant reduction (P< 0.001) in the ability of the mutant, TX6128, to bind fibronectin relative to that of the wild-type strain;in situreconstitution offnmin the deletion mutant strain restored adherence. In addition, the Δfnmmutant was highly attenuated relative to TX82 (P≤ 0.0001) in a mixed-inoculum rat endocarditis model. Taken together, these results demonstrate that Fnm affects the adherence ofE. faeciumto fibronectin and is important in the pathogenesis of experimental endocarditis.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o potencial e a estrutura florestal de uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa de terra firme, da Comunidade São Mateus, município de Placas, Pará. A avaliação foi realizada em dois tipos de ambiente, sendo, um, em Floresta Manejada (FM) e, outro, em Floresta Não Manejada (FNM). Foram alocadas 20 unidades amostrais, sendo nove em FM e 11 em FNM. Em cada unidade amostral, os indivíduos foram inventariados em três classes de tamanho (CT): CT1 - 10 cm < DAP < 30 cm (subparcelas de 50 m x 25 m); CT2 - 30 cm < DAP < 50 cm (50 m x 50 m); e CT3 - DAP > 50 cm (50 m x 200 m). As formas de utilização de todas as espécies arbóreas registradas foram verificadas por meio de entrevistas com assentados, no comércio, nas feiras livres e no mercado municipal de Santarém. Foram amostrados 472,6 árvores/ha na FM, distribuídas em 134 espécies e, na FNM, 508,0 árvores/ha, distribuídas em 146 espécies. As espécies de maior valor de importância nos dois tipos florestais foram: Licania kunthianamm Hook. f. (Chrysobalanaceae) e Mezilaurus itauba Taubert ex Mez (Lauraceae). As espécies que mais se destacaram com diferentes possibilidades de uso foram: Protium cf. heptaphyllum (Aubl.) Marchand (Burseraceae), Hymenaea courbaril L. (Fabaceae) e Caryocar villosum (Aubl.) Pers (Caryocaraceae). Após quatro anos de colheitas, não ocorreu diferenciação estrutural entre FM e FNM.

The development of sustainable extraction methods to obtain natural products constitutes a challenge for the food industry. The aim of this work was to compare yield, separation efficiency, chemical composition, and physicochemical properties of the mucilage extracted from fresh cladodes (FNM) and mucilage extracted from dehydrated cladodes (DNM) of O. ficus indica. Suspensions of fresh and dehydrated cladodes (4% w/w) were prepared for mucilage extraction by using a mechanical separation process. Subsequently, the separated mucilage was precipitated with ethyl alcohol (1:2 v/v) then, yield and separation efficiency were determined. The mucilage was characterized by measuring Z potential, viscosity, color, and texture attributes. Additionally, chemical proximate analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were conducted. No significant differences (p < 0.05) were detected in the yield and separation efficiencies between samples. Nevertheless, the dehydration process of cladodes prior to mucilage extraction increased protein, ashes, nitrogen free extract, and calcium content. The viscosity was higher in DNM than in FNM. The TGA revealed a different thermal behavior between samples. In addition, the DNM showed lower L (darkness/lightness), cohesiveness, adhesiveness, and springiness values than those of FNM. These results support that differences found between the chemical and physicochemical properties of DNM and those of FNM will determine the applications of the mucilage obtained from the O. ficus indica cladodes in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

The essay that follows, we attempted to analyze the Brazilian automobile industry between 1953 and 1968 from the privatization of the Fábrica Nacional de Motores (National Motor Factory) and the dissolution of the Indústria Brasileira de Automóveis Presidente (Brazilian Automotive Industry President), both in 1968. Their stories are approaching both the attempted acquisition of the first second, but also from the strategies used by opponents of both, in order to cause disbelief in these popular developments by appealing to the media, legal processes and IPCs. For this purpose, relied primarily on an analysis of the influence of this sector in Brazil's economy still on the Vargas period, then moving on to a study of the international environment that was part of this industry in the proposed period. Performed these steps, we refer again to the Brazilian reality watching the new opportunities from the deployment of the then revolutionary government in 1964, so that finally, they were analyzed the processes that led to the factories in question at the end of their cycles. The conclusions arrived at, pointing to concerns not only economic but also political-ideolígicos.
A dissertação que segue, buscou analisar a indústria automobilística brasileira entre 1953 e 1968 a partir da privatização da Fábrica Nacional de Motores e da dissolução da Indústria Brasileira de Automóveis Presidente, ambas em 1968. Suas histórias se aproximam tanto pela tentativa de aquisição da primeira pela segunda, como também a partir das estratégias utilizadas pelos opositores de ambas, a fim que causar descrença popular nestes empreendimentos através de apelos a mídia, processos jurídicos e CPIs. Para tanto, recorreu-se primeiramente a uma análise da influência deste setor na economia do Brasil ainda no período Vargas, passando em seguida para um estudo da conjuntura internacional a que estava inserida esta indústria no período proposto. Realizada estas etapas, nos remetemos novamente a realidade brasileira observando as novas possibilidades a partir da implantação do então governo revolucionário de 1964, para que por fim, fossem analisados os processos que levaram às fábricas em questão ao fim de seus ciclos. As conclusões a que se chegou, apontam para interesses não apenas economicos, mas também de ordem político-ideolígicos.

Detta arbete genomförs på uppdrag av Skara Sommarland. Arbetet är till stor del baserat på att utföra en jämförande studie mellan två hjulaxlar till en åkattraktion. Den befintliga axeln består av tre delar, två axelpar och ett centerfäste, medan den nya designen av axeln enbart består av en del. Den befintliga axelns ändar som kopplas in i centerinfästningen utsätts för onödigt slitage. Arbetet belyser även orsaken som leder till nötningen samt möjligheter att minska nötningen. Den nydesignade axelns högre pris medför höga kostnader för företaget.I arbetet används Haigh-diagram för att undersöka om arbetspunkten för den nya axeln ligger under Haigh-diagram kurvan, som teoretiskt sett leder till oändlig livslängd. I arbetet utförs en FEM analys för att simulera båda axelkonstruktionerna och för att beräkna spänningarna i axeln under belastning.Resultatet av genomförda analyser visar att den befintliga axeln plasticerar medan den nya axeln inte når sträckgränsen för materialet. Varken den befintliga eller den nya axeln når brottgränsen. Eftersom brottgränsen inte nås finns ingen risk för sprickbildning enligt finite fracture mechanics. För den befintliga axeln visar resultatet att det uppstår en rörelse mellan axel och infäste som är tillräckligt stor för att klassificeras som en orsak för nötning.För att undvika eller minimera nötningen kan möjliga åtgärder genomföras vilka beskrivs i arbetet. Exempel på förbättringsförslag som skyddar mot korrosion och nötning ges som till exempel rengöring före ytbehandling och ökad korrosionshärdighet.
This thesis is performed on behalf of the amusement park Skara Sommarland. The work is based on a comparative study of two different shafts for a rollercoaster. An already existing shaft in three parts, two shafts and one hub, while the new shaft design consists of one homogenous part machined from a solid bloc of material. The ends of the shafts for the current shaft design that are mounted in the hub are exposed to unnecessary wear. The thesis partly focuses on the causes of the fretting wear and possible actions to prevent or minimalize the damaged caused by fretting. The new shaft design leads to increased costs, which leads to monetary losses for the client compared to before.Haigh-diagrams are used to evaluate if the critical point of the design is in the safe area of the diagram, theoretical leading to an infinite lifespan of the shaft. Finite element analyses were performed in 3D CAD to simulate the shaft design and calculate the stresses in the design when under the maximum operational load.The result of the analyses shows that the current shaft suffers from plastic deformation while the new shaft design does not reach the yield strength of the material. Neither the current nor the new shaft design reach the ultimate tensile strength. Because the ultimate tensile strength is not reached there is no risk of crack initiation through finite fracture mechanics. For the current shaft design the results show that there occur movement between shaft and hub with high enough magnitude to be classified as one of the causes of the fretting.To avoid or minimize fretting several actions can be performed. Examples of pre-emptive actions are cleaning of surfaces before surface treatment for corrosion resistance.

Studio di comparazione tra EUS-FNA ed EUS-FNB 22G nella caratterizzazione delle lesioni solide pancreatiche Abstract Introduzione La FNA (fine-needle aspiration) è la metodica ecoendoscopica (EUS) di scelta per la valutazione e campionamento delle lesioni solide pancreatiche. Negli anni recenti sono stati introdotti in commercio aghi da biopsia (FNB, fine-needle biopsy) in grado di consentire l’acquisizione di materiale senza la modificazione dell’architettura e morfologia tissutale, dimostrando una eccellente accuratezza diagnostica associata ad una maneggevolezza comparabile agli aghi standard da FNA. Acquire™ (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA, USA) rappresenta un tipo di ago Franseen a tre punte in cromo-cobalto, costituito da tre uncini elettrolucidati, a cui corrispondono tre superfici di taglio simmetriche. Metodi Uno studio retrospettivo volto all’acquisizione dei dati delle procedure ecoendoscopiche con prelievo per esame citologico o istologico è stato condotto nel nostro centro, analizzando i dati relativi alle procedure ecoendoscopiche eseguite da Novembre 2019 a Settembre 2020 in pazienti con riscontro di nodulo solido pancreatico. Lo scopo dello studio è stato quello di comparare sensibilità, specificità, accuratezza diagnostica, valore predittivo positivo e valore predittivo negativo tra prelievo con ago da FNB 22G e prelievo con ago da FNA. Sono stati inoltre valutati l’impatto del grado di esperienza dell’operatore e il tasso di complicanze tra i differenti tipi di ago Risultati La diagnosi di adenocarcinoma pancreatico è risultata la più frequente in entrambi i gruppi, seguita rispettivamente dalle diagnosi di tumore neuroendocrino, lesione benigna, lesione di natura secondaria e da un caso di tumore solido pseudopapillare (70.0%, 6.7%, 5.0%, 3.3%, 1.7%). Le diagnosi non conclusive sono risultate rispettivamente del 15.6% (7/45) nel gruppo FNA e del 6.7% (1/15) nel gruppo FNB. In relazione alle diagnosi ottenute non sono state riscontrate differenze statisticamente significative nell’ambito dei due gruppi (p > 0.05). FNA e FNB hanno dimostrato performance diagnostiche sovrapponibili, con una accuratezza diagnostica per la FNB del 93.33% e per la FNA del 84.4% (p>0.05). In nessun caso si è verificata una complicanza maggiore. In 2 casi è stato registrato un minimo sanguinamento endoluminale a livello del sito di accesso dell’ago, entrambi i casi sono stati registrati nel gruppo FNB (p < 0.05). In entrambi i gruppi la maggioranza delle procedure è stata eseguita da un operatore esperto, rispettivamente nel 71.1% (32/45) del gruppo FNA e nel 60.0% (9/15) del gruppo FNB. Nel gruppo FNA è emersa una correlazione statisticamente significativa tra diagnosi ottenuta ed esecuzione dell’esame da parte di un operatore esperto (p < 0.01). Tale correlazione non è emersa nel gruppo FNB (p > 0.05). Conclusioni La EUS-FNA e la EUS-FNB presentano entrambe una elevata accuratezza diagnostica con un tasso di complicanze trascurabile, ricoprendo sempre più un ruolo fondamentale nel percorso diagnostico del paziente con nodulo pancreatico. Nel nostro studio non si è dimostrata una differenza statisticamente significativa tra le due metodiche per quanto concerne sensibilità, specificità e accuratezza diagnostica, sebbene si sia confermata la percezione attuale di un trend a favore della FNB. L’esperienza dell’endoscopista appare il parametro in grado di influenzare maggiormente la resa diagnostica nel gruppo sottoposto a prelievo con ago da FNA, mentre tale correlazione non si è evidenziata nel gruppo FNB.

The metallurgical processes and the products developed from these processes have been the cornerstone on which our civilizations have developed and flourished. Many of the new materials that have been developed over centuries were often the result of serendipitous occurrences. Because of the importance of new materials to the improvement of society, it is necessary to accelerate the way in which new alloys and processes are designed, developed and implemented. Over the last two decades the computational side of materials science has thrived as a result of bigger and faster computers. However, the application of new computational methods to the development of new materials and structures is still in the early stages primarily because of the complexity of most metallurgical processes. One such process is the decarburization of steel. Because of the importance of the microstructure on the mechanical properties, changes in the near surface properties are affected by the loss of carbon in the alloy. The topics investigated in this thesis include a variety of alloys and microstructures that are considered to be important in the development of a unique structure necessary for a more efficient method of recovering natural gas and oil from underground reserves as well as structures for energy absorbing systems. Since both the material application and the structure are new, this research represents an ideal opportunity to combine processing, properties, microstructure and computations to accelerate the development of these new structures. Compared to other commercially available proppants which tend to fail in demanding environments, the thin-walled hollow metal proppants are regarded more promising due to the low density and high mechanical strength. The energy-absorbing composite material manufactured by embedding said spheres in the Mg/Al matrix material is optimized by improving sphere and matrix properties at each step in the process. Ultimately the mechanical strength, fracture toughness, and energy absorption are expected to achieve a factor of 2-5 higher than previously reported. Modeling makes it economically practical to assess the targeted materials' overall properties, behaviors and the mechanical responses in conjunction with stress environment, material properties, material dimensions among other variables, before a structure is built. Additionally, more advanced modeling can enable the quantitative descriptions of more complex metallurgical phenomena such as the effects of impurity elements and deformation under complex loading conditions.

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are advanced materials and their main characteristic is microstructure and composition variation over the volume of the specimen. This variation of the composition results in changing of material properties in the component. In FGMs usually there are two different types of powder materials such as metal and ceramic powders which are mixed to build up the graded region. These grade layers are placed between the metal and ceramic layers and by this approach a smooth and gradual transient from metal to ceramic can be achieved.Sintering is the main technique to manufacture these types of materials. During the sintering process, cooling of the specimen from sintering temperature to room temperature results in generation of thermal residual stresses within the material. These thermal stresses may cause crack propagation and failure of the material.Distribution analysis of these thermally induced stresses within the material has been carried out in this thesis work. Finite element package ABAQUS has been used in order to simulate the distribution of the thermal residual stresses in the materials. In order to achieve the optimal design for different geometries the parametric study also has been performed. For example influence of number of layers, mixing ratio and porosity has been investigated.Based on the finite element results for cylindrical and cuboid models, non-linear composition variation for both geometries has no improving effect in terms of induced thermal residual stresses. Porous material shows less thermal stress than non-porous material. As the amount of porosity for individual layer was considered in simulation process, this approach resulted in decreasing of thermal stresses within the material. Moreover, non-uniform thickness of graded layers was not beneficial for stress reduction. This variation of thickness results in increasing of thermal residual stresses within the material.

Pseudostatic design methods for seismic design of retaining structures are very widely spread in aseismic design codes worldwide. These methods are based on a crude simplification of reality, nevertheless observational evidence of earth retaining structures designed using such methods based on limit equilibrium show their good overall performance except for some situations where saturated granular backfill is present. The aim of this work is first to critically describe the main tools available today for the analysis and seismic design of flexible retaining structures. Secondly to apply different methodologies to a practical benchmark study case describing all issues related to the correct application of simplified methodologies and issues regarding the sophisticated numerical approaches. Finally results obtained by the simplified and the sophisticated approaches are evaluated and compared Differences, advantages and disadvantages between the simplified and the more sophisticated approaches are illustrated with the aim to give useful indications for an effective aseismic design.

Der mit flüssigem Natrium gefüllte Druckbehälter eines Präzessionsexperimentes unterliegt im Betrieb einer Vielzahl an Belastungen. Neben den aus der Rotation und Präzession resultierenden Fliehkräften und dem gyroskopischen Moment müssen ebenfalls die fertigungsbedingten Unwuchten sowie die Fluid-Struktur-Interaktion berücksichtigt werden. Darüber hinaus stellen die bei der Erwärmung bzw. Abkühlung auftretenden thermischen Spannungen eine wesentliche Beanspruchung dar. Es wird ein Algorithmus vorgestellt, der es ermöglicht, alle diese transienten und winkelabhängigen Lasten bei minimalem Rechenaufwand in den Berechnungsprozess einzubeziehen und die für den statischen und zyklischen Festigkeitsnachweis nach FKM-Richtlinie maßgeblichen Beanspruchungen zu identifizieren. Dies ermöglicht die vollflächige Berechnung des Auslastungsgrades in ANSYS Workbench.

When investigating fuel cell stack design and performance detailed stack modeling is needed. By using a combination of the commercial software MATLAB and COMSOL, a stack model has been developed. The model incorporates a flow network model (FNM) and a 2D finite element method (FEM) model. The FNM model initially calculates the flow distribution in the stack, and transfers this information to the FEM model. The FEM model solves for electron transport, thermal conduction and simplified reactant and coolant transport. This stack model is validated and used to investigate the behaviour of a stack and individual cells under various operating conditions, with a special focus on cell-to-cell electrical coupling. Furthermore the effects of changing flow header dimensions are investigated. This type of modeling is well suited for initial stack performance estimates, and tests of worst case scenarios. This can contribute to faster stack design iterations.

Liquid cooling is used for thermal management of electronics in defense, power, medical, and computer applications due to the increasing power density and the desire for compact packaging. The objectives in the design of these systems are to create a sufficient amount of total flow and to appropriately distribute the flow so as to maintain the electronic component temperatures at the desired level. The technique of Flow Network Modeling (FNM) is ideally suited for the analysis of flow distribution and heat transfer in liquid-cooling systems. The FNM technique uses overall flow and thermal characteristics to represent the behavior of individual components. Therefore, solution of conservation equations over the network enables efficient prediction of the flow rates, pressures, and temperatures in a complete liquid-cooling system. This article describes the technical basis of the FNM technique and illustrates its application in the design of a distributed-flow cold plate and of a complete water-cooled system. The study demonstrates the utility of the FNM technique for rapid and accurate evaluation of different design options and the ensuing productivity benefits in the design of liquid cooling systems.

The objective of the study is to improve on performance of the current liquid cooling solution for a Multi-Chip Module (MCM) through design of a chip-scale cold plate with quick and accurate thermal analysis. This can be achieved through application of Flow Network Modeling (FNM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in an interactive manner. Thermal analysis of the baseline cold plate design is performed using CFD to determine initial improvement in performance as compared to the original solution, in terms of thermal resistance and pumping power. Fluid flow through the solution is modeled using FNM and verified with results from the CFD analysis. In addition, CFD is employed to generate flow impedance curves of non-standard components within the cold plate, which are used as input for the Hardy Cross method in FNM. Using the verified flow network model, design parameters of different components in the cold plate are modified to promote uniform flow distribution to each active region in the chip-scale solution. Analysis of the resultant design using CFD determines additional improvement in performance over the original solution, if available. Thus, through complementary application of FNM and CFD, a robust cold plate can be designed without requiring expensive fabrication of prototypes and with minimal computational time and resources.

We focus on dynamics of multiple air bubbles exposed to acoustic pressure field while ascending in water. The bubbles are injected into the pool filled with water from a vertical capillary tube, and then the acoustic wave of designated frequency is applied toward the bubbles. The frequency of the acoustic wave is varied from 0.5 to 20 kHz. Volume and shape oscillations of the bubbles are captured by a high-speed camera at frame rates up to 40000 fps with a back-lighting system. Through this system, we succeed in capturing the dynamics of the axisymmetric shape oscillation with a distinct mode number; the bubble exhibits the volume oscillation first with a fundamental frequency f0, and then the gradual transition to the shape oscillation with a fundamental frequency fnm takes place. We evaluate the correlation through the careful observations between the f0 and fnm as f0 ∼ 2.1fnm, which brings almost perfectly confirmation of the prediction through the preceding theoretical works. We also indicate the criterion of the excitation of the shape oscillation by varying the frequencies of the adding pressure field.

Abstract Demand is growing for the dense and high-performing IT computing capacity to support artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine learning, autonomous cars, the Internet of things, etc. This led to an unprecedented growth in transistor density for high-end CPUs and GPUs, creating thermal design power (TDP) of even more than 700 watts for some of the NVIDIA existing GPUs. Cooling these high TDP chips with air cooling comes with a cost of the higher form factor of servers and noise produced by server fans close to the permissible limit. To overcome these issues for high TDP chips advanced cooling technologies, need to be investigated. Liquid cooling is becoming more mainstream to overcome the some of challenges mentioned above. Direct-to-chip cold plate-based liquid cooling is highly efficient and becoming more reliable as the advancement in technology is taking place. Several components are used in the liquid-cooled data centers for the deployment of cold plate based direct to chip liquid cooling like cooling loops, rack manifolds, CDUs, row manifolds, quick disconnects, flow control valves, etc. Row manifolds used in liquid cooling are used to distribute secondary coolant to the rack manifolds. Characterizing these row manifolds to understand the pressure drops and flow distribution for better data center design and energy efficiency is important. In this paper, the methodology is developed to characterize the row manifolds. Water-based coolant Propylene glycol 25% was used as the coolant for the experiments and experiments were conducted at 21 °C coolant supply temperature. Highly calibrated Pressure sensors were used at the supply port of the row manifolds and the inlet-outlet of the main hose to measure the supply pressure of ports and pressure drop across the row manifold respectively. Similarly, ultrasonic flow sensors were used to measure the flow rate at each supply port and the main entrance of the row manifold. Two, six-port row manifolds’ P-Q curves were generated, and the value of supply pressure and the flow rate were measured at each port. The results obtained from the experiments were validated by a technique called Flow Network Modeling (FNM). FNM is a 1-D simulation suited for the analysis of flow distribution in liquid cooling systems. The FNM technique uses the overall flow and thermal characteristics to represent the behavior of individual components. Therefore, the solution of conservation equations over the network enables efficient prediction of the flow rates, pressures, and temperatures in a complete liquid-cooling system.

Abstract Growing demand for dense and high-performing IT compute capacity to support deep learning and artificial intelligence workloads necessitates data centers to look for more robust thermal management strategies. Today, data centers across the world are turning to liquid-based cooling solutions to keep up with the increased cooling demand for high power racks approaching 100kW of heat dissipation. Deploying direct-to-chip cold plate liquid cooling is one of the mainstream approaches which allows targeted cooling of high-power processors. This study provides the framework for a hybrid in row cooler (IRC) with liquid-to-air (L2A) heat exchanger (HX) system delivering chilled coolant to liquid-cooling cold plates mounted to the high heat dissipation electronics. This approach is useful for high heat density cooling of racks where no primary facility coolant is available at the data center. The present study aims to investigate the thermo-hydraulic performance of a distinct L2A IRC system that supplies cold secondary coolant (PG 25%) into the cooling loops of liquid-cooled servers in racks within an existing air-cooled data center. Thermal test vehicles (TTVs) are built to replicate actual high heat density servers. From the cold plate to data center level the proper choice of each level component was described based on their cooling performance and relevance. Three different cooling loop/rack designs are characterized experimentally, and detailed analytical and numerical (FNM) simulations are developed to analyze the heat exchanger performance. The FNM and CFD model of a data center are done in two steady and transient forms to study the performance of the L2A IRC in a data center.
