The main goal of this dissertation is a mathematical description and an analysis of viscoplasticproperties of magnetorheological fluid, in operational conditions of the damper’s work, as well as the determining the optimum, in view of indicated values of parameters, size of the gap for the MR fluid to flow, in these devices. A detailed analysis of literature was made. The scope of research work has been limited to two types of magnetorheological devices: the shock absorber LORD RD 1005-3 and the MR damper prototype T-MR SiMR -132 DG. On the basis of performed experiments, it has been estimated i.e.: conventional yield point and the maximum shear stress of analyzed MR fluid, including variable shear rate, intensity of current flowing in a solenoid, liquid’s temperature and the gap height. Identified viscoplastic models were used to develop a simulation that verifies the proposed mathematical model which describes the behaviour of MR fluid in operating gap of machine’s head, with data derived from performed experiments

This work is mainly a comparative study of the performance of ejector refrigeration systems, using different refrigerant fluids. These fluids were all CFC substituents and their performance was analysed either as pure components or in non-azeotropic mixtures. An extensive bibliographic study was carried out ln order to compare the properties of these fluids, and to establish the selection criteria. A bench refrigeration system was built up in order to study the machines behaviour, and to test a model describing the operation of an ejector working with fluids having different molar masses. The flow unidimensional model, which is based upon the conservation equations represents fairly well the ejector's actual behaviour. A second model, somewhat simpler, takes into account the global performance of the machine. This model requires the thermodynamic characteristics of the non-azeotropic mixtures. An RKS equation of state using a mixing law and the equality of fugacities at the vapour-liquid equilibrium is thus employed. The model leads to the classification of about ten different refrigerant fluids according to their performance. It is also employed to study the system's efficiency when different concentrations of the Rl 4 lb-R318c couple are also made when the mixture is distilled at the exit of the ejector, and when it is not. The exergy balance analysis points up the important exergy losses at the ejector, the condenser, and the generator of the refrigeration engine

Women’s underrepresentation in Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE) at the high end is still a much debated topic. We argue that a negative gender stereotype, pertaining to women’s analytic reasoning ability and rational thought, explains to some extend this underrepresentation. Embedded in Steele’s (1997) work on "stereotype threat", we examined whether this stereotype interfered with female engineering students’ performance on a fluid reasoning test (Raven’s Advanced Progressive Matrices). Another aim was to better understand the influence of individual differences in implicit stereotyping and processing efficiency (working memory). Two pilot studies, two experiments, two reanalyses, and one integrated analysis were conducted among 300 students, among whom more than 200 were engineering majors. Results show that the negative stereotype about women’s rationality was known, and that it was interfering with female engineering students’ test performance in the fluid reasoning domain. As expected, the level of implicit stereotyping did not interact with conditions aiming at facilitating or inhibiting stereotypic interference. However, stereotypic interference was restricted to those individuals whose processing efficiency was relatively low. Together, these new findings sustain the international literature on "stereotype threat", and support a sociocognitive explanation of women’s underrepresentation in MSE, rather than a biological one

Geomaterials are present in nature in many forms : solid soil or rock, soft clay, almost liquidmud, etc... Geomechanics deals with the understanding the solid behavior of geomaterials. However, solid ground can happen, under specific external conditions, to turn into fluid : asfor example during mudflows or debris flows. In such a context, there are few numerical toolsable of modeling the different phases of the behavior. Furthermore, it seems that there is,nowadays, no satisfactory constitutive model to describe such a transition. Our work concerns, in a general way, solid-fluid transition in geomaterials behavior and thedevelopment of a constitutive model describing both the solid phase, fluid phase, and thetransition between the two. In this framework, we chose to carry out calculations with theFEMLIP numerical method (Finite Element Method with Lagrangians Integration Points)which has shown a strong potential to describe a wide variety of behaviors (including historydependant behavior), in a unique model.Having implemented and validated the first elasto-plastic law in Ellipsis (FEMLIP basedcode), we have introduced in this code the solid-fluid transition model. This last is based onthe evolution, at the failure state detected by the second order work criterion, of the solidelasto-plastic behavior towards a viscous fluid behavior, exhibiting a yield stress. After validation of the solid-fluid transition model in homogeneous cases (considering Plasolelasto-plastic law and Bingham viscous one), we applied this model to the modeling of Sarnoand Quindici mudflows (Italy, 1998). The first models shows the possibility to describe thethree phases of the flow (initiation, propagation and immobilization), and we could study theeffect of various parameters on the stop against a protection work

A significant amount of waste heat is generated and rejected by industrial processes. This waste heat at low temperature can be upgraded using absorption heat transformers. Absorption heat thermo-transformers use conventional working fluids such as {water + lithium bromide} or {ammonia + water} systems. Nevertheless, the use of these working pairs in the processes has certain drawbacks such as corrosivity, toxicity or even crystallization. Other working fluids consisting of ionic liquid have also been considered. However, these solvents show significant toxicity and high costs. This study aims to evaluate the performance of working fluids consisting of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and water in absorption heat thermo-transformers. The liquid-vapor equilibria of five {H2O + DES} systems as well as their thermophysical properties such as density, molar heat capacity and excess molar enthalpy were measured. This experimental work made it possible to develop empirical correlations and to adjust the parameters of the NRTL model in order to characterize the working fluids studied at any point of the absorption heat thermo-transformer. Simulations indicate that the working fluids {H2O + DES} have a performance close to {H2O + LiBr} mixture and they could be an alternative to traditional working fluids
Gonthier, Corentin. "Cognitive control in working memory : an individual differences approach based on the Dual Mechanisms of Control framework." Thesis, Grenoble, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014GRENS035/document.
The constructs of working memory and cognitive control are conceptually close; a high working memory capacity is hypothesized to be associated with an efficient cognitive control. This hypothetical association has large implications for human cognition and provides an elegant explanation for the frequently reported relationship between working memory capacity and fluid intelligence. However, the difficulty in operationalizing and measuring cognitive control makes this hypothesis hard to test. One model of cognitive control, the Dual Mechanisms of Control (DMC) framework, constitutes a possible solution to this problem: the model proposes two distinct mechanisms of cognitive control which can be efficiently operationalized and studied. There is reason to believe that one of these two mechanisms, proactive control, is specifically related to working memory capacity. The objective of the present research work was to assess the relationship between individual differences in working memory capacity and the tendency to use proactive control. This relationship was tested in four steps: 1) by using innovative measures of the tendency to use proactive control, based on newly developed paradigms, 2) with classic cognitive control tasks sensitive to proactive control, 3) with a neuroimaging approach using electro-encephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, and 4) by testing whether the use of proactive control explains the relationship between working memory and fluid intelligence. Overall, our results did not support the idea that working memory capacity is uniquely related to the tendency to use proactive control; the data were more consistent with a general advantage of participants with a high working memory capacity in all situations

The temperature difference between the hot surface seawater (of tropical solar origin) and the cold one at depth (which comes from the poles) constitutes a stable, environmentally-friendly and renewable source of energy available in the ocean. This ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) can be used to produce electricity by the way of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). However, the small temperature difference between hot and cold sources represents a technical challenge both for heat transfers and for cycle performances. The objective of this thesis is then to explore the operation improvement possibilities of an ORC applied to OTEC, to complete the knowledge of the system components and to highlight the advantages of this new technology on a non-connected grid such as that of Reunion Island. This work is based both on simulations and on experimental results obtained on a 450 kW thermal energy onshore prototype named PAT ETM. In the first chapter, a new method for the choice of the working fluid is proposed. The study brings out some fluids so far little considered for OTEC. In the second chapter, the experimental tool (the PAT ETM) is presented extensively. The third chapter reports the heat exchanger technologies that have been tested and characterized. The fourth chapter deals with the dynamic modeling of an OTEC system. This study leads to the assessment of the control-lability of a complete power plant and shows a still little explored opportunity: that of using OTEC as a management tool to control an electrical network
Gombart, Samantha. "Connaissances et contrôle exécutif : Implication dans la cognition et facteurs de protection du vieillissement normal." Thesis, Tours, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015TOUR2017/document.
Several studies of cognitive aging allow to distinguish two key components of the cognition: « knowledge » defined as the general knowledge acquired throughout the life, and the « executive control », defined as the set of operations that control and regulate cognitive performance. These models suggest that the recourse to these two components evolves in a differential way during the life. Therefore, the objective of this work was to examine the implication of these two components in the cognition at different periods of life but also to determine whether one or the other of these components could play a protective role against the cognitive aging. Results suggest mainly that « control » is more involved in the cognition in older adults, and that this component moderates age-related effect on cognitive functioning
