Abstract In this article, I analyse Ferzan Ozpetek's representation of queer narratives within the changing Italian culture and analyse his fusion of accented and cosmopolitan film aesthetics to narrate the hybrid queer and non-queer identities that his characters embody in three of his films: Le fate ignorant (His Secret Life) (2001), Saturno Contro (Saturn in Opposition) (2007) and Mine vaganti (Loose Cannons) (2010). Due to their multicultural nature, Ozpetek's films often represent in-between and multifaceted characters and exemplify culturally complex dynamic storytelling. I mainly focus on the representation of queer and immigrant identities, displacement and replacement, notions of home and the idea of family.

Since the early 1980s, the Hopi filmmaker and photographer Victor Masayesva Jr. has played an influential role in Native American multimedia production in the United States. This article examines Masayesva's filmPaatuwaqatsi: Water, Land and Life(2007), which documents a 1,650-mile run made by Hopis from their home villages in Northern Arizona to Mexico City in early 2006. The run marked the closure of the Mohave Generating Station in southern Nevada and the Black Mesa coal mine which fuelled the power plant. It also celebrated the shutting down of the controversial coal slurry pipeline between the plant and mine that required for its operation the pumping of 1.2 billion gallons of pristine water annually from the Navajo Aquifer, which lies under the homelands of the Hopi and Navajo nations. The article explains how Hopis' affective relationship with place is put into action through the acts of running, prayer and personal sacrifice. It reviews Masayesva’s filmmaking career to date and considers his core idea of the indigenous aesthetic, a set of principles that has guided the practical decisions and artistic choices he has made in the course of over thirty years' working as an independent media producer. After a close analysis of selected scenes inPaatuwaqatsi, the article concludes by noting, first, how the film negotiates internal divisions within Hopi society over development and environmental issues and, second, how it engages the impact of continuing drought and ongoing climate change on the American Southwest.

A powerful expression of Ferzan Ozpetek’s narratives of displacement, Mine vaganti (2010) represents an open-ended journey of multiple characters and their tentative pursuit of happiness through the transformative power of “humor.” More specifically, the inherent potential for change that defines this quest emerges from an oscillation between “il comico” and “l’umorismo” in light of modernist theories of humor, as they are articulated in Luigi Pirandello’s and Henri Bergson’s seminal essays, Saggio sull’umorismo (1908) and Le rire (1900). While following an auteurist perspective, this analysis focuses on the significance of the film script, coauthored by Ozpetek and Ivan Cotroneo. Moreover, it highlights the role that other elements of film form, such as sound, editing, cinematography, and mise en scène play in tracing the emergence of an “etica dell’estetica” (Zagarrio 2012). Mine vaganti’s aesthetic poignantly renders Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of “liquid modernity” (2005) and advocates for a community in which identity is a liminal, fluid, and ever evolving creative endeavor that brings to the foreground marginalized agents of social and political change, in this case the homosexual and the elderly.

Introduction. Ensuring the safe operation of skip and cage hoisting installations is one of the most important tasks of theoretical and experimental research in the field of mining mechanics. To achieve this goal, predictive (proactive) maintenance is required. It consists in performing the necessary repair actions to reduce the rate of development or prevent malfunctions identified on the basis of information about the actual technical condition of the equipment. Proactive maintenance is based on monitoring the technical condition of an object, it is the most effective in terms of preventing failures and the least expensive. Methods of research. The most important physical and mechanical properties of the components of hoisting equipment from the point of view of the reliability of their functioning are the endurance of critical parts and metal structures. To implement the monitoring system, sensors are needed to obtain the most reliable information for predicting changes in the physical and mechanical properties of loaded elements. The task of assessing the technical state from the stresses acting in the material is complicated by the cyclical nature of the load. The disadvantage of the widely used method for determining stresses by measuring the deformation with a tensometer with subsequent calculation is that the stresses are obtained indirectly with inevitable errors. An error arising from the impossibility of taking into account the actual nature of the loading is added to the error associated with calculating values from analytical dependencies. Results. In the monitoring system, it is advisable to use integral-type film strain gauges, which make it possible to predict the destruction of a part by detecting microcracks on its surface. Conclusion. The load on the monitoring objects is the result of the addition of vibrations of different frequencies and amplitudes, and integral-type film strain gauges will make it possible to obtain the most reliable information about the state of critical parts of mechanisms and metal structures.

With the advent of the information age, language is no longer the only way to construct meaning. Besides language, a variety of social symbols, such as gestures, images, music, three-dimensional animation, and so on, are more and more involved in the social practice of meaning construction. Traditional single-modal sentiment analysis methods have a single expression form and cannot fully utilize multiple modal information, resulting in low sentiment classification accuracy. Deep learning technology can automatically mine emotional states in images, texts, and videos and can effectively combine multiple modal information. In the book Image Reading, the first systematic and comprehensive visual grammatical analysis framework is proposed and the expression of image meaning is discussed from the perspectives of representational meaning, interactive meaning, and composition meaning, compared with the three pure theoretical functions in Halliday’s systemic functional grammar. In the past, people often discussed films from the macro perspectives of literary criticism, film criticism, psychology, aesthetics, and so on, and multimodal analysis theory provides film researchers with a set of methods to analyze images, music, and words at the same time. In view of the above considerations, Mu Wen adopts the perspective of social semiotics, based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics and Gan He’s “visual grammar,” and builds a multimodal interaction model as a tool to analyze film discourse by referring to evaluation theory.

For the treatment of acid mine water an in-situ pilot plant with a self-sufficient energy supply and remote data transmission was tested in acidic pit lake 111, a small lake in the Lusatian mining district in Germany. In this paper the design of the enclosure-bioreactor in-lake system, the mode of operation of a three-stage treatment process by the use of anaerobic fixed film reactors and the results of treatment are shown.

Les piles à combustible à oxyde solide à support métallique (MS-SOFC) connaissent un grand intérêt en raison de leurs avantages potentiels (faible coût, tolérance aux cycles redox et thermiques, etc.) par rapport aux piles à combustible SOFC conventionnelles. Cette thèse a pour objectif de développer une pile à combustible à oxyde solide fonctionnant aux températures intermédiaires (500 - 750°C) sur un support métallique poreux (MS-IT-SOFC). Deux supports métalliques poreux, sous forme de fibres compactées en acier 316L et FeCrAl, fournis par une entreprise locale TIBTECH, ont été étudiés afin d’évaluer leur stabilité physique, chimique et électrique et valider leur utilisation comme support pour IT-SOFC. Cette étude a permis de sélectionner le FeCrAl comme support métallique pour IT-SOFC. La réduction de la température de fonctionnement passe en partie par la diminution de la résistance de polarisation de la cathode. Cet objectif peut être atteint soit par le développement de nouveaux matériaux plus performants, soit par l’amélioration de la microstructure ou de la surface/interface entre l’électrolyte et la cathode. Cette thèse développe la dernière approche en améliorant la surface/interface entre le CGO et le LSCF. Pour cela, trois architectures de cathode ont été élaborées et caractérisées par spectroscopie d’impédance : cathode classique (LSCF poreux et épais), cathode avec un film mince LSCF à l’interface cathode-électrolyte, et cathode avec squelette CGO imprégné de LSCF. L’influence des deux dernières architectures reste remarquable dans la mesure où leur ASR est proche de 0,1 Ω.cm2 à 600°C et 0,02 Ω.cm2 à 750°C. La cellule complète MS-IT-SOFC avec une cathode simple et un électrolyte CGO a fourni 421 et 523 mW/cm2 à 700 et 750°C, respectivement. L’objectif d’une cellule à support métallique pouvant fournir 0,5 W/cm2 est donc atteint. En revanche, l’utilisation de l’électrolyte CGOCB/YSZ/CGOCB donne les densités de puissance plus faible à 154 et 219 mW/cm2 à 700 et 750°C, respectivement. Cette baisse de performance est attribuée à l’utilisation de l’oxyde YSZ qui introduit plus de pertes aux températures intermédiaires. Cependant, l’intégration d’une cathode avec squelette CGO imprégné de LSCF a permis d’augmenter ces valeurs à 242 et 342 mW/cm2, démontrant ainsi tout l’intérêt de ce type de cathode. L’ensemble de ces travaux a permis de valider notre architecture SOFC à support métallique poreux FeCrAl, et a permis de définir des orientations importantes dans le choix de l’électrolyte (matériau, épaisseur) et des électrodes
Metal Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (MS-SOFCs) have gained significant interest due to their potential advantages (low-cost, tolerance to redox and thermal cycling and so on) over conventional fuel cells. The main objective of this thesis was to develop an intermediate temperature (500-750°C) Solid Oxide Fuel Cell on a porous metal support (MS-IT-SOFC). Two porous metallic supports in the form of compacted fibers (316L steel and FeCrAl, supplied by the local company TIBTECH, were studied in order to evaluate their physical, chemical and electrical stability and to validate their use as support for IT-SOFCs. This study leads to the selection of FeCrAl as a metallic support for IT-SOFC. The decrease of the operating temperature is partly achieved by reducing the cathode polarization resistance. This objective can be achieved either by developing new and better performing materials, or by improving the microstructure or the electrolyte/cathode or surface/interface of known materials. This thesis develops the latter approach, by improving the surface/interface of GDC/LSCF. For this purpose, three cathode architectures have been developed and characterized by impedance spectroscopy: conventional cathode (porous and thick LSCF), cathode with a thin LSCF film at the cathode-electrolyte interface, and cathode with GDC backbone infiltrated by LSCF. The influence of the last two architectures remains remarkable as their ASR is close to 0.1 Ω.cm2 at 600°C and 0.02 Ω.cm2 at 750°C. The complete MS-IT-SOFC cell with a simple cathode and GDC electrolyte has provided 421 and 523 mW/cm2 at 700 and 750°C, respectively. Thus, the goal of a metal-supported cell that can deliver 0.5 W/cm2 is achieved. On the other hand, the use of CGOCB/YSZ/CGOCB electrolyte decreased the power densities to 154 and 219 mW/cm2 at 700 and 750°C, respectively. This decrease in performance is attributed to the use of YSZ oxide, which introduces more losses at intermediate temperatures. However, the integration of a cathode with a CGO backbone impregnated with LSCF allowed to increase these values to 242 and 342 mW/cm2, demonstrating the interest of this type of cathode. All these works allowed to validate our SOFC architecture with a porous FeCrAl metal support, and to define important orientations in the choice of the electrolyte (material, thickness) and the electrodes

In the early twentieth century, the American eugenics movement began to dominate much of the public discourse surrounding disability, particularly the disability known as “feeble-mindedness.” Eugenicists broadly depicted the feeble-minded as both innocent children because of their supposed lack of intelligence and moral deviants who could harm members of society. There are many studies that have analyzed the effects of this construction of disability in popular culture and American films. However, only a few scholars, such as Joseph Straus and Stephanie Jensen-Moulton, have asked what the feeble mind sounds like. Through a musical analysis of the leitmotifs present in the film scores for Of Mice and Men (1939) and Oklahoma! (1955), this thesis argues that the symptomology of feeble-mindedness and social stereotypes of the disability seeped into and influenced the musical portrayals of Jud Fry and Lennie Small. Jud and Lennie reflected many of the anxieties surrounding disability during the eugenics era. Although the films’ narratives reveal the ideological positions towards disability, music also plays a significant role announcing characters’ disability and encouraging particular responses to disability. The musicians for these films, including Aaron Copland, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, and Robert Russell Bennett, accomplished this task by musically imitating a disabled embodiment. By mimicking either physical symptoms or social stereotypes of feeble-mindedness, particularly obsession and idiocy, the film scores represent Jud and Lennie as either innocent children or social menaces to support the ideological stance of each film.

Advancements in technology in mining have allowed previously unfeasible ore bodies to be developed. Paste backfill is one technological advancement that has allowed for the development of high-grade, low tonne production when employing the cut and fill mining method. Goldcorp Inc.'s Red Lake Mine currently utilizes this method and is the site for the study of this thesis. Paste backfill (paste) is defined as a mine backfill material that consists of eighty-five percent solids by weight and does not bleed water when placed often consisting of between two and fifteen percent Portland cement by weight. A paste barricade or paste fill fence is a constructed barricade whose purpose is to retain backfill within a mined out stope. The construction of the barricade varies with different operations, for Red Lake Mine the barricade consists of an anchored rebar skeleton covered with an adequate thickness of shotcrete. The majority of the applicable barricade research focuses on hydraulic fill barricades in open stope mining. The barricade pressures in these instances are much larger than those experienced in paste backfill barricades. As such, the current paste loading theory is based on material with a different loading mechanism. Although some research is currently underway, the majority of the barricade research is based on brick barricades and not the shotcrete, rebar skeleton as used at Red Lake. Catastrophic failures of barricades can occur without an understanding of the loading mechanisms. Based on the catastrophic risk, this thesis provides an investigation into the behaviour of the paste backfill and paste barricades at Red Lake Mine in order to provide a safe, cost effective design of paste barricades. This thesis develops an understanding of paste loading mechanisms and barricade capacity derived from a field study of nine instrumented fill fences at Red Lake Mine. Eight of thefences were instrumented to monitor the reaction strain in the fence and the applied pressures during standard production paste pours, the ninth fence was a controlled destructive test that determined the ultimate capacity of the fence. The data for these tests were gathered in real time and was subsequently reduced to assist in analysis. Yield Line Theory, Rankine Theory, strain induced stress, stress vs. strain analysis and numerical modeling were used to develop an understanding of the paste loading mechanisms and the capacity of the paste fill barricades. The analysis determined that the paste backfill behaves as a Rankine-like soil in the initial stages of loading with an average coefficient of lateral earth pressure, Ka, of 0.56. The destructive test determined that the yielding stress of a paste barricade is approximately 100 kPa. Further findings from the research determined that the rate of placement of paste does effect the loads applied to the fence and that the largest pressures exerted on the fill fence occur when paste lines were flushed with water at the end of the pour. This thesis provides an understanding of the paste loading and fill fence interaction with respect to failure. Based on this research the Red Lake Mine should be able to increase production without increasing risk to mine personnel by quantifying the overall loading and strengths of the fill barricade.

This thesis addresses rheological characterization of mine tailings and paste materials as saturated solid-liquid or homogenous mixtures. Thickened tailings and paste fill can be classified as viscoplastic or time-independent non-Newtonian fluid material. Viscoplastic fluids deform plastically when the applied shear stress is less than a critical stress, which is known as "yield stress". When the shear stress exceeds the yield stress this type of fluid flows like a viscous material with finite viscosity.
In terms of pipeline design for transportation of mine tailings or paste material, one of the most important rheological parameters that must be measured would be yield stress. There are numerous techniques and equipment that can be used for rheological characterization and specifically for yield stress measurements. Literature review shows that the vane method is one of the best rheometery techniques for determining the yield stress of homogeneous fluids directly.
There is also a method for calculating the yield stress from slump height. Any geometry of slump moulds, cone or cylinder, with different dimensions can be applied in this method. The standard conical slump test is basically used for controlling the workability of fresh concrete. This method was then modified for yield stress and viscosity calculation of cemented mixtures. These slump tests can be categorized as in-situ methods of yield stress measurements.
Several rheometery and in-situ experiments were carried out to measure the yield stress of two mine tailings samples in this study. A rheometer was used in controlled shear rate and controlled shear stress modes for yield stress measurements with the vane method. The results were satisfactory for cemented and non-cemented mixtures. The effect of mixing time on the yield stress of material combined with cement was also assessed using the vane method. No significant difference emerged between increased yield stress of the mixtures after 4 minutes and 12 minutes of mixing.
The accuracy of calculated yield stress values using in-situ methods was also determined by drawing comparisons between these series of data and actual yield stresses measured using a rheometer. Modified conical slump tests overestimated the values of yield stress and did not obtain reliable data for viscosity calculation of the mixtures.

La caméra est l’être invisible qui crée l’être visible. Elle est non seulement le représentant du regard du réalisateur mais aussi un voyeur, comme le spectateur en quelque sorte. Nous pouvons étudier la caméra invisible, parce que nous pouvons savoir comment le réalisateur l’a utilisée grâce aux images montrées dans le film. Pour l’analyse, nous choisissons trois éléments particuliers, le mouvement, la distance et l’angle que l’on peut trouver clairement dans le film pour révéler cette caméra. « Comment le réalisateur exprime-t-il son intention par la caméra ? » Notre hypothèse relie l’intention du réalisateur et l’utilisation de la caméra. Nous analysons deux films : "La Nuit américaine" de François Truffaut et "Huit et demi" de Federico Fellini. Ils sont leur premier film sur le film. Nous définissons les films qui possèdent les caractéristiques suivantes en tant que « film sur le film » : un film de fiction, un film réalisé par l’« auteur », le traitement du processus de production du film, la présentation du film dans le film et l’existence du personnage réflexif du réalisateur. Pour introduire et affermir cette approche, nous analysons également "Le Mépris" de Jean-Luc Godard comme troisième film étudié dans l’introduction et la conclusion de l’étude. Cette étude se déroule en trois étapes. D’abord, c’est la division des univers intérieurs du film liés à la narration. The camera is the invisible which creates the visible. It is not only the representative of the director’s gaze but also a voyeur, similar to the audience in some way. We can study this invisible camera because we know how the director has used it through the images shown in the film. For analysis, we choose three items - movement, distance and angle - that can be found clearly in the film to reveal the camera. “How does the director express his intention by the camera?” Our hypothesis links the director’s intention and the application of the camera. We analyze two films : "Day for Night" by François Truffaut and "8 1/2" by Federico Fellini. These are their first film on film. We define the films that have the following characteristics as the ‘film on film’ : a fiction film, a film directed by the ‘auteur’, treatment of the process of the film production, presentation of the film in film, and the existence of director’s reflexive character. To introduce and strengthen this approach, we also analyze "Contempt" by Jean-Luc Godard as the third film to analyse in the introduction and the conclusion of the study. This study proceeds in three steps. The first step is the division of the interior world of the film related to the narrative. The second step is the statistics on the use of the camera in every shot of the film. Finally, we interpret these statistics in comparison to the division of the interior world. In this step, we want to reveal the director’s intention in his making of the film

Den fransk-algeriska filmaren Yamina Benguiguis dokumentärfilmstriptyk Mémoires d’immigrés. L’héritage maghrébin var när den hade premiär 1997 en av de första filmerna som på allvar gav röst åt de nordafrikanska arbetskraftsinvandrarna och lyfte fram deras minnen av immigrationen till Frankrike. Uppsatsens syfte är att studera den filmiska gestaltningen av minnen i de tre filmerna utifrån hypotesen att de skapar ett kollektivt minnesrum som utmanar den officiella historieskrivningen och det nationella minnet i Frankrike. Analysen av filmerna tar avstamp i en teoretisk bakgrund i två delar: Diaspora- och exilfilm, där jag kortfattat redogör för vissa drag inom området diaspora- och exil inom filmteorin, samt Rörliga bilder och minne, där jag tar upp teman som filmen som minnesteknologi och kollektivt minne, spår och minnestecken, samt gestaltning av minnesprocesser på film. I analysens tre huvuddelar uppmärksammas följande aspekter av minnesgestaltningen: Att bryta tystnaden: Språk, röst och det akustiska, Bildminnen och visuell arkeologi, och Resor i tid och rum: Filmens minnesplatser. De muntliga vittnesmålen utmanar den kollektiva och nationella amnesin kring immigrationen samtidigt som de vittnar om den förda politikens konsekvenser i enskilda människors liv. Urvalet av arkivbilder, klippning och musik bidrar till en form av poetisk gestaltning av spår och minnesplatser. Sammantaget rör sig filmerna i skärningspunkten mellan privata, kollektiva minnen och offentlig historia där den inre, levda upplevelsen av historien står i centrum.

AbstractThe aim of this chapter is to develop a theory of how filmic figurations are already fused with conceptions of history during the mise-en-scène process, and thereby enable historical experiences. The first section will therefore examine the theoretical concept of figuration and the special relation between cinematic illusion and historical reference. The second section analyzes the strategies used by historical films to create filmic spaces and model an internally consistent, temporally arranged historical world. Building on this, the third section proposes that, for historical films, the film theory concept of mise-en-scène should be supplemented by a concept of mise-en-histoire: the imaginative referentialization of the historical worlds constructed by a film.

AbstractBy way of conclusion, this chapter examines the relationship between historical films and theories of historical culture. At the heart of its discussion is the thesis that appropriation of histospheres in spectators’ reception has a refigurative effect on our historical consciousness. On this view, the historical experiences generated by films augment the conceptions of history we have acquired from written accounts and sources with a physical-sensory dimension. Consequently, this chapter argues that two new forms of remembering make a substantial contribution to transforming our historical culture: The reminiscence triggers integrated in the audiovisual design of a historical film prompt spontaneous or “unbidden” memories that come to us contingently and are essentially receptive. The mise-en-histoire’s referentialization, by contrast, is a productive act of remembering.

Maximum oil film temperature was determined based on the obtained oil film temperature distributions. The calculation were carried-out on the condition of static equilibrium position of journal.

Abstract Clean coal slurry is a possible alternative to liquid fuel. The mine problems in use of coal in engines (ash content and particles size) are solved via a novel slurry processing technique consisting in superfine grinding of the coal, selective separation of the coal particles and other inorganic ingredients, and finally combustion of the fine fraction coal in slurry droplets. An experimental rig for column flotation and selective flocculation has been built. A vibroinertial grinding facility reduces the coal particles to 40 microns or less. After addition of appropriate amounts of a suitable oil and water an emulsion flotation step produces coal-water slurry with ash content under 4%, which in turn coal under 20 microns in size with ash content 0.4% by film-flotation.

Thin liquid films flowing along solid walls are widely used in technological applications in which high rates of heat and mass transport are required. The transport processes can be further intensified by using structured walls. In the present work hydrodynamics and heat transfer in falling liquid films on heated vertical and inclined walls with mini-grooves are studied experimentally and theoretically/numerically. The experiments are performed with straight, meandering and zigzag mini-grooves. The film dynamics is investigated using a confocal chromatic sensoring (CHR) technique. The flow patterns and the temperature of the liquid-gas interface are visualized using the high-speed infrared thermography. The wall temperature distribution is measured with thermocouples. A numerical model for description of the velocity and temperature fields in the thermal entrance region of the falling films on smooth and structured walls is developed. This model is based on the solution of the Graetz-Nusselt problem for falling films on grooved plates. We show that the mini-grooves significantly affect the flow patterns, film stability and heat transfer in falling liquid films. Using grooved walls leads to the increase of the maximal attainable heat transfer rate.

Lead Zirconate Titanate (PbZrxTi1−xO3 or PZT) is a piezoelectric material widely used as sensors and actuators. For microactuators, PZT often appears in the form of thin films to maintain proper aspect ratios. One major challenge encountered is accurate measurement of piezoelectric coefficients of PZT thin films. In this paper, we present a simple, low-cost, and effective method to measure piezoelectric coefficient d33 of PZT thin films through use of basic principles in mechanics of vibration. We use a small impact hammer with a tiny tip to generate an impulsive force acting perpendicularly to the surface of a PZT film. In the meantime, we measure the impulsive force via a load cell and the responding charge of the PZT thin film via a charge amplifier. Then the piezoelectric coefficient d33 is obtained from the measured force and charge based on piezoelectricity and a finite element modeling. We also conduct a thorough parametric study to understand the sensitivity of this method on various parameters, such as substrate material, boundary conditions, specimen size, specimen thickness, thickness ratio, and PZT thin-film material. To demonstrate the feasibility, we calibrate the new method via a PZT thick film disk resonator with a known d33. Experimental results show that d33 measured via this method is as accurate as those from the manufacturer’s specifications within its tolerance. We then apply the new method to PZT thin films deposited on silicon substrate, and successfully measure the corresponding piezoelectric coefficient d33.

The measurement of lubricant film thickness under elastohydrodynamic (EHL) contact conditions is well established and a variety of experimental techniques have been used, the most accurate and widely used of which is optical interferometry. This lends itself particularly well to the study of the all-important mixed and boundary regimes, since the films are of the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of light. The vast majority of these studies have been made under pure rolling conditions, since the necessary optical coatings preclude the use of high sliding speeds within the critical thin fluid film regime. These conditions are however precisely those required to activate ZDDPs and other antiwear additives, making accurate ‘in situ’ optical studies of additive film build-up difficult. A modification to the existing MTM (mini-traction machine) has allowed steel on steel contacts to be run under high sliding speed conditions, thereby allowing antiwear additive reactions to occur. By optically measuring the film thickness of these reaction films as they form, in tandem with friction measurements, a full picture of both friction and reaction film build-up can be made. Using a novel LED (light emitting diode) light source and accurate calibration procedures, the film thickness of the whole contact area can be measured down to a few nanometres. This paper presents a study of the behaviour of standard additive combinations under realistic operating conditions and describes the rig in detail.

Falling liquid films are used in many industrial apparatuses. In many cases the film flow along a wall with topography is considered advantageous for intensification of the transport processes. We use the shadow method and the chromatic white light sensor (CHR) method to study the wavy structure of falling films on flat walls and on walls with longitudinal grooves. We show that the wavy pattern substantially changes on walls with topography. The wave frequency, the wave propagation velocity and the area of the liquid-gas interface decrease on grooved walls. The linear stability of the film has been analyzed using the long-wave theory, which relies on the assumption that the average film thickness is much smaller than the scale of the film thickness variation. The linear stability analysis predicts that the disturbance growth rate, the frequency of the fastest growing disturbance mode and the wave propagation speed decrease on a tube with longitudinal mini-grooves in comparison with a smooth tube. These results agree well with the experimental findings.

We report a thermal induction plasma-assisted, rapid, ambient-pressure, low-temperature one-step process for depositing conformal, non-porous nanocrystalline ZnO thin film on various substrates ranging from Si (100), fused quartz, glass, muscovite, c- and a-plane sapphire (Al2O3), to polyimide (Kapton™). The predominantly c plane-oriented as-synthesized polycrystalline films range in thickness from 20nm to 200nm, deposited at a growth rate ranging from 2 nm/min to 50 nm/min. The lowest deposition temperature achieved with this method is 162°C and the as-deposited film is found to be conductive (12.5 S/m). Annealing in a pure argon environment at different temperatures ranging from 700–950°C changes the textures and morphologies of the thin film—higher annealing temperatures favor the restructuring of ZnO nanocrystalline film to form nanopillars of ZnO.

In this 1-year feasibility study, we tried polymerization of several different monomers, commercial as well as novel, specially designed and synthesized for this project in the presence of the nitrate ion to produce imprinted conductive polymers. Polymers 1 and 2 (shown below) produced a response to nitrate, but one inferior to that produced by a polypyrrole (Ppy)-based sensor (which we demonstrated prior to this study). Thus, we elected to proceed with improving the stability of the Ppy-based sensor. In order to improve stability of the Ppy-based sensor, we created a two-layer design which includes nitrate-doped Ppy as an inner layer, and nitrate-doped PEDOT as the outer layer. PEDOT is known for its high environmental stability and conductivity. This design has demonstrated promise, but is still undergoing optimization and stability testing. Previously we had failed to create nitrate-doped PEDOT in the absence of a Ppy layer. Nitrate-doped PEDOT should be very promising for sensor applications due to its high stability and exceptional sensing properties as we showed previously for sensing of perchlorate ions (by perchlorate-doped PEDOT). During this year, we have succeeded in preparing nitrate-doped PEDOT (4 below) by designing a new starting monomer (compound 3 below) for polymerization. We are currently testing this design for nitrate sensing. In parallel with the fabrication design studies, we fabricated and tested nitrate-doped Ppy sensors in a series of flow studies under laboratory and field conditions. Nitrate-doped Ppy sensors are less stable than is desirable but provide excellent nitrate sensing characteristics for the short-term experiments focusing on packaging and deployment strategies. The fabricated sensors were successfully interfaced with a commercial battery-powered self-logging (Onset Computer Hobo Datalogger) and a wireless data acquisition and transmission system (Crossbow Technologies MDA300 sensor interface and Mica2 wireless mote). In a series of flow-through experiments with water, the nitrate-doped Ppy sensors were exposed to pulses of dissolved nitrate and compared favorably with an expensive commercial sensor. In 24-hour field tests in both Merced and in Palmdale, CA agricultural soils, the sensors responded to introduced nitrate pulses, but with different dynamics relative to the larger commercial sensors. These experiments are on-going but suggest a form factor (size, shape) effect of the sensor when deployed in a porous medium such as soil. To fill the need for a miniature reference electrode, we identified and tested one commercial version (Cypress Systems, ESA Mini-reference electrode) which works well but is expensive ($190). To create an inexpensive miniature reference electrode, we are exploring the use of AgCl-coated silver wire. This electrode is not a “true” reference electrode; however, it can calibrated once versus a commercial reference electrode at the time of deployment in soil. Thus, only one commercial reference electrode would suffice to support a multiple sensor deployment.

Ce dossier résume les conclusions de la première évaluation comparative internationale sur la mesure dans laquelle les différents cadres juridiques nationaux reconnaissent les droits des peuples autochtones et des communautés locales en matière d’eau douce, ainsi que les droits spécifiques des femmes à utiliser et à gérer les eaux communautaires. Cette analyse est le fruit d’une collaboration entre l’Environmental Law Institute et l’Initiative pour les droits et les ressources (Rights and Resources Initiative), qui héberge le seul programme de recherche au monde consacré à la surveillance de l’état des droits fonciers, forestiers et d’eau douce des communautés, et qui sera élargie et mise à jour au fil du temps.
