Malgré leur place prépondérante dans le réseau d'identification des femmes violentées, les médecins et les infirmières rapportent peu de cas de violence conjugale dans leur clientèle. Quinze médecins et cinq infirmières ont été interrogés dans le cadre d'une recherche portant sur les attitudes des professionnel-le-s de la santé envers la femme violentée. Il ressort de cette recherche que le contexte de travail contribue à la sous-identification des femmes violentées. Les auteur-e-s en concluent que cette situation, ajoutée à la présence d'attitudes défavorables du personnel médical à l'égard des femmes violentées, nécessite une mise en question de la pratique dans les services de santé.

RÉSUMÉ Cet article présente, à la lumière des développements récents de l'historiographie féministe, une nouvelle interprétation de la Fédération nationale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Cette réinterprétation se base sur un concept assez nouveau: le maternalisme, défini comme une catégorie d'analyse utilisée pour qualifier les mouvements de femmes chez qui la maternité constituait le point central de l'idéologie et de l'argumentation. Nous examinons, entre autres, le modèle féminin véhiculé par la FNSJB pour constater qu'il correspondait au modèle traditionnel de « la femme », celui qui effectuait une équation entre la femme et la mère. La maternité n'était toutefois pas perçue par la FNSJB comme une fonction limitative, mais bien comme une ouverture vers la société. Elle a donc dû redéfinir les frontières entre les sphères privée et publique pour permettre aux femmes de transgresser celles du foyer et faire bénéficier la société de leur influence maternelle. Le cadre d'analyse élaboré dans la première partie est ensuite appliqué à un cas concret de revendication: la bataille pour le vote des femmes.

La lecture de magazines est une façon d’apprendre, de s’inspirer, de trouver des idées, de créer. La consommation suscitée par les magazines permet d’incarner les aspirations de chacune. Que ce soit en matière de décoration intérieure ou de costume, les lectrices sont courtisées sous l’angle de l’accès à la modernité qui s’impose comme une nécessité dans un processus de mise à distance des habitus et des coutumes et par l’absorption de modèles internationaux.

C’ est chez Richard Wright que l’ autrice trouve les racines de la pensée beauvoirienne de l’ oppression des femmes, de l’ engagement de l’ écrivaine et du féminisme radical selon lequel les femmes doivent se constituer en groupe à part entière pour se libérer.

Le développement, au cours des 50 dernières années, des principes de la législation des droits de l'homme a exercé, et exerce encore, une influence déterminante non seulement sur le droit international humanitaire, mais aussi sur l'ensemble du droit international. Plus récemment, le mouvement visant à obtenir la reconnaissance de l'égalité de droits entre hommes et femmes a, lui aussi, marqué de son empreinte la législation des droits de l'homme. En 1979, par exemple, la communauté internationale a adopté la Convention sur l'élimination de toutes les formes de discrimination à l'égard des femmes, à laquelle 155 États sont aujourd'hui parties. L'adjonction d'un protocole facultatif est actuellement à l'étude: ce nouvel instrument permettra de porter des plaintes individuelles et collectives devant le Comité pour l'elimination de la discrimination à l'égard des femmes. Les organisations gouvernementales et non gouvernementales accordent une attention toujours croissante aux droits humains de la femme.

Les enjeux relatifs à la parentalité – telles les capacités reproductives de la femme ou la capacité de l’homme à assurer le confort matériel de sa famille – sont fréquemment présentés comme des facteurs influençant les individus à choisir une relation intime où l’homme est plus âgé que la femme. Toutefois, peu de chercheurs se sont intéressés aux expériences vécues des individus entretenant des relations intimes hypogamiques en termes d’âge – soit les relations où la femme est plus âgée que son partenaire – et on ignore, à ce jour, si ces thèmes affectent la durabilité de ce genre de relation et, si tel est le cas, de quelle façon. À l’aide de 55 entrevues semi-dirigées menées auprès de femmes âgées de 30 à 60 ans qui ont un (ou des) partenaire(s) intime(s) plus jeune(s) qu’elles, j’explore dans cet article la perspective des femmes quant à la façon dont la question des enfants influence le développement de leur(s) relation(s) hypogamique(s) en termes d’âge. Ces entrevues révèlent que dans le contexte de développement initial des relations hypogamiques en termes d’âge, les enjeux associés à la parentalité influencent les choix conjugaux des femmes et ceux-ci sont principalement perçus comme des obstacles au développement et à la pérennité de leurs relation(s). Précisément, les limites biologiques à la fertilité féminine ainsi que le rapport (perçu) que les hommes plus jeunes entretiennent avec la conjugalité et parentalité s’imposent aux yeux des femmes comme des éléments nuisant à leur capacité de développer des relations durables avec des hommes plus jeunes. Cependant, peu de femmes décrivent l’(in)capacité des hommes plus jeunes à assurer le confort matériel de leur famille comme un obstacle au développement de ce type de relation intime.

Les premières féministes québécoises se sont efforcées de concilier leurs tentatives pour améliorer la condition des femmes avec leurs convictions religieuses. Pour ce faire, elles ont beaucoup insisté sur l'influence morale que les femmes pouvaient exercer dans la société. L'analyse de leurs écrits, en particulier des passages concernant les droits, les devoirs et l'influence des femmes, nous révèle que leur fidélité au concept de « nature » féminine restreignait énormément la portée de leurs revendications et que leurs adversaires se servirent du fameux argument de l'influence morale des femmes pour leur faire accepter leur statut inférieur dans les domaines éducatif, professionnel et politique. Les prises de position de ces femmes nous paraissent bien timides aujourd'hui, mais compte tenu de la violence de la réaction antiféministe, il fallait plus de courage pour être une féministe modérée au début du siècle que pour afficher des idées radicales en 1989.

"Le Peintre de la vie moderne" est un texte double qui unit à l'enthousiasme du critique face à une oeuvre qui comble son attente,l'émotion du poète qui découvre en elle un élargissement de ses propres vues sur une Beauté moderne qui peut aussi bien surgir dans le charme de l'artifice et de la mode que prendre le visage emblématique de la courtisane. Figure obsessionnelle chez Guys qui domine largement son immense production graphique pour devenir son seul motif de prédilection à partir de 1860,la femme est aussi l'égérie de Baudelaire qui a marqué de son empreinte ambivalente "Les Fleurs du Mal". Envisagée comme une figure réelle et symbolique de la modernité,la femme est le sanctuaire où se réalise la communion du prophète et du dessinateur, le point convergent de leur veine créatrice. Si une même hantise du monde féminin les a conduit à faire une place prépondérante à la provocation lascive et sensuelle de la femme vénale, ils ont traduit aussi l'un et l'autre,dans des images poétiques et troublantes, leur même désir de saisir la vie à travers le langage du corps féminin et de son enveloppe d'étoffes aux ondulations souples et volumineuses,dont l'image de la femme du XIXe siècle est indissociable. L'influence des stimulations psycho-sensorielles et cognitives induite par l'alimentation a été étudiée chez 12 femmes. Lors d'un premier test, celles-ci ingéraient un repas palatable (RP) de 3045 kJ ; lors d'un second, un repas non palatable (RNP) constitué des mêmes aliments mélangés mixés puis lyophilisés. Ce dernier, de valeur hédonique moindre, était servi sous forme de galette; sa composition était ignorée des sujets; 6 d'entre eux l'ont ingérée lors du premier test, les 6 autres lors du second; l'ordre de présentation des repas était tiré au hasard. La production postprandiale de chaleur pour une période de 90 minutes s'est avérée après le RP supérieure de 33% (P<0.01) à celle suivant le RNP. Le surcroît de thermogénèse observé après le RP provenait d'une oxydation exclusive des glucides, secondaire à une sécrétion de noradréna1ine (P<0.05) et d'insuline (P<0.01). L'ingestion du RNP ne faisait pas varier significativement les taux plasmatiques de noradrénaline, et provoquait une augmentation de l'insulinémie inférieure de moitié à celle suivant le RP. Les variations de l'adrénaline, du glucagon et du glucose plasmatiques ont été similaires après les 2 types de repas. Des capacités thermogéniques variables ont été mises en évidence selon les individus, les phases du cycle menstruel et les facteurs psychiques. La connaissance d'une thermogénèse liée à la palatabilité dépendant du couple hormonal noradrénaline-insuline ne permet plus d'attribuer les coûts obligatoires, de digestion, d'absorption et de stockage des aliments à l'ensemble de la production postprandiale de chaleur. Cette thermogénèse facultative semblable à la "Diet-induced-thermo-génésis", pourrait participer à la régulation du poids corporel et être, par son défaut, en partie responsable de l'obésité.Montréal Trigonix inc. 2018

L’Andorre est devenue un État de droit depuis l’approbation de la Constitution par le peuple andorran en 1993. À l’issue des élections de 2011, le parlement andorran, El Consell General, a connu la parité sans l’aide de politiques publiques. Il est à rappeler que l’Andorrane a obtenu le droit en vote en 1970 et son éligibilité trois ans plus tard. Quels sont les apports desfemmes dans l’espace politique afin de permettre à ce pays d’atteindre les standards européens ? Actuellement, un Accord d’Association avec l’Union Européenne est en cours de négociation au sein duquel les femmes détiennent un protagonisme capital. L’influence des femmes dans la société andorrane s’origine à partir de la pubilla, l’héritière unique. Ce statut toujours en vigueur et reconnu par le droit andorran, lui confère la mission de transmission des biens et de préservation du patrimoine familial. Dans cette société cosmopolite où les nationaux représentent 46% de la population, les Andorranes peuvent jouer un rôle politique. Cet État de 468 km 2 constitue, en réalité, un laboratoire d’idées et d’actions. Notre intervention en maison d'arrêt nous a confronté aux effets traumatiques de l'enfermement mais nous a aussi enseigné que la pratique d'activités physiques et sportives (APS) pouvait les réduire et avoir des effets secondaires sur les conduites de santé des femmes incarcérées. C'est ce que cette étude se propose d'évaluer par la mise en place d'un dispositif méthodologique précis. Nous avons comparé les conduites de santé d'un groupe de femmes non pratiquantes à celles d'un groupe pratiquant obligatoirement des APS, ces groupes étant tirés au sort. Le recueil des données s'est essentiellement effectué à travers des entretiens semi-directifs. Les résultats montrent une évolution différenciée des conduites de santé selon le groupe d'appartenance, celui des pratiquantes à une évolution plus favorable. Il s'avère que l'influence d'activités physiques organisées et adaptées à des retombées sur la sensation de forme et les préoccupations liées à la diététique. Elle suscite des sensations nouvelles et accroit la sensibilité au fonctionnement organique, à l'image de soi et augmente l'estime de soi. En redonnant sa place à l'acte moteur, à la liberté de mouvement, l'activité physique ne peut empêcher que d'autres actes de vie y soient également appelés

L'objet de cette étude porte sur la sous-représentation des femmes en politique en France. Nous avons cherché à savoir pourquoi si peu de femmes se trouvaient aux instances décisionnelles. Nous voulions examiner les causes sociales qui auraient pu influencer le comportement des femmes, et vérifier si cela avait une incidence sur leur place dans la vie sociale, économique et politique, d'une part et d'autre part si cela avait une répercussion sur la perception de leur image de soi. Enfin il nous fallait examiner si le pouvoir tel qu'il existe en France était un obstacle à l'accession des femmes en politique. Les résultats montrent que les fortes inégalités ont une répercussion sur leur accès au monde économique, social et politique et ne favorisent pas une image valorisée d'elles-mêmes. Cependant même si les filles réussissent mieux que les garçons et gagnent du terrain dans différents domaines, les résultats montrent aussi qu'elles n'ont pas encore une conscience objective de leurs capacités. Les schèmes traditionnels sont tellement ancrés en elles qu'elles ont des difficultés à construire une nouvelle identité de femme, qui leur permettrait de se positionner autrement. Même si elles parlent de changer l'image de la femme politique, elles ont des difficultés à mettre en place une autre forme de rapport au pouvoir, que celle exercée actuellement par les hommes

L’évaluation de la douleur d’autrui est un processus complexe. Plusieurs facteurs tels la culture et la race peuvent la biaiser (sous-évaluer ou sur-évaluer). Le présent projet s’est intéressé d’abord, à l’effet de la similarité (ethnique ou genre) entre observateur et observé sur façon d’évaluer (à la hausse ou à la baisse) la douleur des stimuli de mains (ethnies noire et blanche puis genres féminin et masculin) chez 60 participants (15 femmes et 15 hommes d’ethnie blanche, 15 hommes et 15 femmes d’ethnie noire) dont l’âge était compris entre 20 et 56 ans et la scolarité entre 14 et 24 ans. Ensuite, sur la corrélation entre empathie situationnelle (cotes de douleur attribuées aux stimuli en général) et l’empathie dispositionnelle (scores de réponses obtenus aux sous-échelles prise de perspective et préoccupation empathique d’IRI). Les participants avaient pour tâches d’observer et de rapporter sur une échelle visuelle analogue le niveau de douleur perçue au niveau des stimuli puis répondre à un questionnaire d’empathie (index de réactivité interpersonnelle). Il a été attendu que la similarité ethnie ou de genre allait faire évaluer à la hausse la douleur observée chez autrui, puis il allait avoir une corrélation significative entre l’empathie situationnelle et l’empathie dispositionnelle. Dans la littérature certaines études ont montré d’une part, le contexte influence l’évaluation ou la prise en charge de la douleur d’autrui et d’autre part, il y a un lien entre l’empathie et la prise en charge de la douleur d’autrui. Pourtant, les résultats d’une analyse de variance à mesures répétées n’ont pas montré un effet significatif de la similarité sur l’évaluation de la douleur des stimuli. Également, le coefficient de corrélation de Pearson n’a pas montré de corrélations significatives entre l’empathie situationnelle et l’empathie dispositionnelle. En ce sens, les hypothèses n’ont pas été confirmées. Il est possible que les participants ne tiennent pas compte de la similarité en évaluant la douleur des stimuli. Voilà pourquoi le niveau de douleur attribué aux stimuli similaire et dissimilaire n’était pas différent. La portée clinique et les limites de cette étude peuvent encourager le développement des protocoles de recherche avec des tâches sollicitant davantage le comportement prosocial et la prise de perspective chez les participants. The assessment of the pain of others is a complex activity. There are a lot of factors such as culture and race that can bias this process, (under or over assessed). First of all, this study is focused on the effect of gender or ethnic similarity between the observer and the observed regarding the assessment of pain of hands in potentially painful situations (black and white ethnic; feminine and masculine gender) by 60 participants (15 women and 15 men of white ethnicity, 15 men and 15 women black ethnicity) aged 20-56 years with a level of education between 14 and 24 years. Then, it seeks a correlation between situational empathy (pain ratings assigned to general stimuli) and dispositional empathy (response scores for subscales perspective taking and empathic concern IRI). The participants' tasks were to observe and report on a visual analogue scale the level of perceived pain and respond to a survey of empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index). It was expected that the gender or ethnic similarity would be over assessed the pain observed in others, then it would have a significant correlation between situational and dispositional empathy. In one hand, in the literature some studies have shown that the context can influence the assessment, in the other hand, there is a link between empathy and the management of others’ pain. However, the results of repeated-measures analysis of variance showed no significant effect on the similarity assessment of pain stimuli. Also, the Pearson correlation coefficient showed no significant correlations between situational and dispositional empathy. In that case, the hypotheses have not been confirmed. It may be possible that the participants do not take into account the similarity when assessing pain stimuli. The level of pain attributed to similar and dissimilar stimuli was no different. The clinical significance and limitations of this study may encourage the development of research protocols with tasks requesting more prosocial behavior and perspective-taking among participants. Clinically a training plan based on the development of prosocial behavior and decision perspective would be beneficial to help fight ethnic bias that may exist among health professionals providing services to beneficiaries of different ethnic origins.

En 1952 les femmes libanaises acquirent leur droit de vote. A l’époque ce fut un triomphe par rapport à leurs semblables des pays voisins. Mais par contre, le parlement libanais va attendre l’année 1963 pour que la première femme y accède. Et la participation des femmes en politique libanaise ne présente en 2008 que 4,7 % du total du parlement. Malgré l’accroissement du nombre des organisations non gouvernementales, des mouvements féministes et des efforts particuliers concernant la participation féminine en politique : la présence des femmes dans le champ politique reste restreinte.Une étude, à ce propos, a été effectuée en 1997 et a prouvé que les femmes étaient satisfaites de leur représentation dans le champ politique. Aujourd’hui on se demande si les étudiantes en 2008 auront développé une attitude différente de celle des femmes en 1997 ? On se demande si les nouvelles générations de niveau d'instruction universitaire et des futures femmes libanaises confrontent elles un état de consonance cognitive en ce qui concerne leur participation à la vie politique? Et par suite, si elles sont satisfaites, si elles vivent un équilibre psychique et elles évitent les changements d'attitudes ou de comportements susceptibles d'introduire de la dissonance? On se demande aussi si au contraire, les nouvelles générations de niveau d'instruction universitaire et des futures femmes libanaises confrontent plutôt un état de dissonance cognitive susceptible à un changement probable dans leur participation à la vie politique? En d’autres termes, les étudiantes seront-elles tiraillées entre leurs acquis traditionnels favorables à leur absentéisme de la vie politique d’une part et entre leurs acquis des formations universitaires favorables à leur promotion dans tous les domaines de la vie sociale, et entre autre la vie politique, d’autre part ? On a supposé que les nouvelles générations féminines qui poursuivent des études universitaires vivent un état de dissonance entre deux cognitions dissonantes: il s'agit d'une part des cognitions de socialisation, de stéréotypes, des préjugées, de l'habitus et des représentations et d'autre part, des cognitions de l'éducation et d'instruction. Et l'hypothèse de la thèse a proposé que la situation de dissonance probablement vécue par les jeunes étudiantes les motive aux changements d'attitudes et par suite les incite à réduire cette dissonance en supprimant ou réduisant l'importance des cognitions dissonantes.La technique utilisée pour détecter la véracité de l’hypothèse était l’entretien non directif auprès de 51 étudiantes universitaires.Les résultats de l’étude ont confirmé la vraisemblance de l’hypothèse c'est-à-dire que les étudiantes ont presque toutes annoncé leur insatisfaction vis-à-vis de la participation féminine en politique. Mais par contre l’investissement des femmes dans le champ politique a diminué dans les élections législatives en juin 2009 de 6 femmes parlementaires à 4 femmes. Une réflexion sur les obstacles devant l’engagement des femmes dans le travail politique a déduit que le déséquilibre démographique ainsi que la socialisation genrée sont tous deux responsables de l’absence féminine du champ politique. Une proposition du quota féminin au sein du parlement reste un choix parmi d’autres qui doit faire preuve de validitéIn 1952 the lebanese women acquired their right to vote. We wonder if the new generations of university academic level and the future Lebanese women confront a state of cognitive consonance concerning their participation with the political life? And as a consequence, if they are satisfied, if they live a psychic balance and they avoid the changes of attitudes or behavior susceptible to introduce some dissonance?We wonder, on the contrary, if the new generations of university academic level and the future Lebanese women confront rather a state of susceptible cognitive dissonance with a likely change in their participation in the political life? In other words, the students will be pulled between their traditional experiences favorable to their absenteeism of the political life on one hand and between their experiences of university education favorable to their promotion in all the domains of the social life, and among others the political life, on the other hand? We supposed that the new feminine generations which pursue university studies live a state of dissonance between two dissonant cognitions: it is on one hand about cognitions of socialization, about stereotypes, about prejudged, about the habit and the representations and on the other hand, the cognitions of the education and about instruction. And the hypothesis of the thesis proposed that the situation of dissonance probably lived by the young students motivates them to change their attitudes and as a consequence incites them to reduce this dissonance by eliminating or by reducing the importance of the dissonant cognitions.The technique used to detect the truthfulness of the hypothesis was the non directive interview with 51 university students.The results of the study confirmed the credibility of the hypothesis. Almost all the students announced their dissatisfaction towards the feminine participation in politics. But on the other hand the investment of the women in the political field decreased in the general election in June 2009, from 6 parliamentary women to 4 women. A reflection on the obstacles in front of the commitment of the women in the political work deducted that the demographic imbalance as well as the gendered socialization are both responsible of the feminine absence of the political arena. A proposition of the feminine quota within the parliament stays a choice among the others whom has to show validity

This chapter explores the connections between feminist thought and activism in the years following the end of the Second World War, and the feminism that emerged in the mid-1970s. Whereas the emergence of the 1970s French women’s movement is often linked to the student protest movement of May 1968, this chapter draws on the work of historians of French feminism to argue both that many of the women involved were of an earlier generation, and that earlier twentieth-century feminist activists and intellectuals, including Simone de Beauvoir, continued to be influential. Thus, while some French feminists in the 1970s presented their feminist activism as new and revolutionary, and rejected the mores and ideologies of earlier generations, there remained key lines of influence linking their approach - to issues such as women’s right to control their fertility- to earlier feminist campaigns and writings.

This chapter seeks to contextualise Chabrol’s extensive filmography; reassess its place and significance in French Cinema; and shed light over key influences on Chabrol’s aesthetic. The detailed analysis of his first four films, Le Beau Serge, Les Cousins, A Double tour and Les Bonnes Femmes, helps to understand the formal inventiveness and diversity of his overlooked Nouvelle Vague palette whilst offering key insights into recurrent Chabrolean motifs: the gradual blurring or undermining of realistic / naturalistic modes of representation; expressionistic mise en scène; self-reflexive structures and theatricality; voyeurism; oppressive relationships and family dynamics. Whilst the influence of Lang, Hitchcock and Renoir on Chabrol is already well established, in this chapter Balzac’s pragmatic aesthetic is identified as pivotal: beyond the numerous diegetic references to Balzac, Chabrol draws on Balzac’s ‘mosaic’ approach in order to conceptualise his œuvre. It is argued that the Balzacian strategy of the recurrence of characters (see the recurring trio of Charles, Paul, Hélène) helps Chabrol to turn contemporary material into ‘myths’ and build his own dark Human Comedy.

Gender differences have been identified in normal and traumatic motions of the spine. In the cervical region, spinal motions in females were significantly greater than in males during identical dynamic acceleration pulses [1]. Static cervical range of motion was also shown to be greater in female volunteers [2]. In the thoracic region, gender differences were identified in compressive and tensile elastic moduli [3]. Although male volunteers had slightly greater lumbar spine mobility, the difference was not statistically significant [4]. Another study reported that female lumbar specimens were somewhat more flexible than male specimens [5]. Lumbar spinal motions are clinically important in the diagnosis of abnormalities and instability. Increased motions occur secondary to instability and may indicate a need for spinal stabilization. However, although previous studies have provided baseline data for lumbar motions [6], possible variations in spinal motions between males and females may lead to inaccurate diagnosis. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to define lumbar spinal motions on a level-by-level basis to determine statistically significant differences between males and females and at varying levels of degeneration.

The career paths of students are influenced and shaped by the subject choices that are made in the final years of secondary schooling. This paper presents the findings of an empirical study that identified the key factors influencing the decision of rural / regional Australian students to choose or not choose to study Information Processing and Technology. The findings revealed that career oriented, extrinsic factors play an important role in motivating the selection of I.P.T. at school and, by implication, information technology at university. There are few apparent gender differences but there is limited evidence to suggest that males may be more influenced by extrinsic motivators and females by intrinsic motivators. Although the factors used in the study were initially identified largely via informal processes, they all appear to influence the decision to take I.P.T. The focus on career-related factors and the instrumentality of taking I.P.T. could explain the drop-off in students taking the subject. This has potentially significant implications as regards the future supply of good information technology professionals.

The goal of the current research was to evaluate the biological parameters of insects when they were exposed to insecticides for several generations. In the experiments, the adults of the house fly Musca domestica L. were feed with one of two insecticides (chlorfenapyr or fipronil) in each generation. The duration of development stages, fecundity, the weight of larvae, pupa, and adults, as well as the sizes of females and males, were evaluated. The statistical significance of differences in biological parameters was assessed by the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn criteria. The duration of the larva stages lasted 2.2 times more in the fourth generation of chlorfenapyr- and fipronil-exposure strains compared to the control laboratory strain of M. domestica. Increasing the period of preimaginal stages of the insect life cycle can be considered as a sublethal effect of insecticides.

Bleeding time (BT) is the most important test for in "vivo" Vevaluation of primary hemostasis. Several physiological parameters namely sex, age, blood group, hematocrit, platelet count and von Willebrand factor level could exert a significant influenceIn this study, the relationships between BT (Simplate II,General Diagnostics)and these physiological parameters havebeen examined in 58 subjects aging 17-71 (32 males and 26 females; 26 of 0 and 32 of non-0 group). In all the subjects bleedingdiathesis was excluded by interview. They were not taking anvmedicament for at least 10 days and showed normal platelet aggregation by ADP and ArachidonateMean BT value (seconds) was 318± 65 (range 195-A95)Statistical analysis failed to show any significant difference realated to sex and blood group. There was no significant relationship with hematocrit (0.01), platelet count (−0.2A), age (−0.28) and von Willebrand factor level, mesured as ristocetin cofactor (−0.2A). In particular, our data indicate that higher von Willebrand factor levels found in non-0 group in comparison with O-group (113.3 vs 83.5, P < 0:001) do not exert any apparent influence on bleeding time

Accumulation of microdamage contributes to the deterioration of bone quality with aging among the elderly [1]. Microdamage formation in bone is dependent on its ultrastructural constituents. At the ultrastructural level, bone is a fiber-reinforced composite material in which mineral crystals are responsible for its stiffness and collagen fibrils offer its toughness [2]. Using animal models with distinct mineralization levels (BL6 and C3H mice), a previous study has demonstrated that highly mineralized bone tend to form linear microcracks whereas less mineralized bone is more likely to have diffuse damage [3]. To our knowledge, however, the effect of collagen phase on the microdamage formation of bone has not been well studied. Less collagen content [4] and smaller diameter [5] of collagen fibrils have been observed in bone with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) disease, a mutation of a single nucleotide deletion in proα2(I) collagen gene. The oim mouse model has been widely used as animal models to study osteogenesis imperfecta disease. Consequently, the objective of current study was to determine the influence of collage phase alterations on microdamage formation in bone using oim mice.

Traction experiments with the seven-spotted ladybird beetles Coccinella septempunctata (L.) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) were carried out to study the influence of surface structure on insect attachment. Force measurements were performed with tethered walking insects using a load cell force transducer. For each beetle, forces were measured on five different substrates: (1) smooth glass plate; (2) smooth solid Al2O3 (sapphire) disc; (3 – 5) porous Al2O3 discs (anodiscs, back side) with the same pore diameter (220 – 235 nm), but different porosity (28, 42 and 51%). Males (N = 10) and females (N = 10) were used in experiments (10 single runs on each surface). Additionally, inversion tests were performed after each traction force measurement. The force ranged from 0.368 to 10.370 mN in males and from 0.514 to 6.262 mN in females. In both sexes, the highest force values were obtained on the smooth glass and sapphire surfaces, where males generated considerably higher forces compared to females. On all three porous substrates, forces were significantly reduced in both males and females, and the only difference for surfaces was obtained between two extremes: anodiscs with the highest (51%) and lowest (28%) porosity. Males produced essentially lower forces than females on anodiscs samples. Experimental insects performed well and showed normal locomotion on both smooth surfaces. On all anodiscs samples, beetles usually were not able to get a grip and slid over the surface, refused to walk and came to a standstill or even turned over on their backs. When substrates were inverted to 90° and 180°, insects were still able to remain attached to both the glass and sapphire samples, but failed on anodiscs. The reduction of insect attachment on anodiscs surfaces is explained by (1) possible absorption of the secretory fluid from insect pads by porous media and (2) effect of surface roughness.

Urinary tract infection is one of the most important infection causing serious diseases in tropical and sub- tropical countries of Africa. Several factors have been associated with the high prevalence of urinary tract infections in Nigeria. This study was carried out to determine the urinary tract infection status among two hundred and forty (240) asymptomatic females over a period of six weeks (March to April 2022) among 240 females between the 20-50 years of age at Iluju and Saamo village, Ogbomoso, Oyo state, Nigeria. Two hundred and forty urine samples were collected from the females. The mid- stream urine samples collected were examined microscopically for the presence of parasites, after which they were cultured, biochemical findings and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were also carried out. Out of the 240 samples, only 1(0.4%) was found positive for parasitic infection. 34(14.2%) were found to harbour Escherichia coli, 18(7.5%) were positive for Proteus mirabilis, 8(3.3%) were infected by Klebsiella pneumonia, 45(18.8%) had Staphylococcus aureus. Prevalence was found to be higher in women of reproductive age 21-25years (78%) than women above 40years (10.5%). The antimicrobial suspectibility profile indicates that the fluoroquinlonones were the most active antibacterial agents followed by the aminoglycosides. Trimethorim, oxacillim, amoxicillin showed very poor activity. This may be due to long term use of these drugs. The socio- economic status as well as the hygiene practice of the women influence the prevalence of urinary tract infections. Most of the women 134(55.8%) were aware about Urinary tract infection and 106 (44.2%) were unaware. Thus, the high infection rate among asymptomatic females in these villages were due to poor hygiene, lack of good toilet facilities and poor socio- economic status. Abstract Science has come to a disagreement regarding the real effect that chainrings’ geometry has on cyclists’ performance. In this study, the influence of the use of a noncircular chainring on recreational cyclists’ performance is determined through experimental power delivery tests. A critical power model was used to estimate variations on cyclists’ performance. In addition, a new protocol for estimating critical power was proposed. Fourteen recreational cyclists (two females and twelve males) performed a series of self-paced constant-time tests with a circular and a noncircular (i.e., Osymetric) chainring during two different test sessions. Power output, cadence and time were registered to compute the critical power. According to the results of this study, it seems there is a change in the critical power of the majority of the recreational cyclists due to the use of a noncircular chainring. Thus, a performance improvement was obtained during long-endurance tests. However, the order of the tests (i.e., starting with the circular chainring or starting with the noncircular chainring) was proven to have an impact on the results due to a familiarization effect to the test conditions. Finally, a new protocol to estimate the critical power of a cyclist by performing a single riding session was proposed and assessed on a pilot test (i.e., error < 3%).

There has been considerable public interest in reports on harmful alcohol consumption of higher educated females. This study assesses the robustness of this finding with representative German data using ten different indicators of alcohol consumption. This cross-sectional study used data of the Epidemiological Survey on Substance Abuse from 2012. 4,225 females and 3,239 males represent the German population aged 18–64. It presents ten indicators of alcohol consumption by sex and education and provides group specific means and 95 %-confidence intervals. The main results are: (1) Higher educated males and females are drinking alcohol more frequently than lower educated males and females. (2) When drinking, higher educated males and females tend to drink less alcohol than lower educated males and females. (3) Only when using an indicator for hazardous alcohol consumption with different thresholds for males and females, the results indicate a pattern that significantly exposes hazardous alcohol consumption in the group of higher educated females. Concerning the choice of indicators, this study shows that sex-specific threshold-based indicators of alcohol consumption may lead to different conclusions as the majority of other indicators.

t The pink bollworm, Pectinophoragossypiellais a key pest of cotton world-wide. In Israel mating disruption sex pheromone is used in all cotton fields and recent repeated outbreaks of the pest populations has suggested a change in the population sex pheromone characteristics. The research goals were to (1) determine the change in pheromone characteristic of PBW females after long experience to Mating Disruption (MD), (2) to test the male’s antennae response (EAG) to pheromone characteristics of laboratory, naive females, and of field collected, MD experienced females, (3) to analyse the biosynthetic pathway for possible enzyme variations, (4) to determine the male behavioural response to the pheromone blend involved in the resistance to MD. The experiments revealed that (1) MD experienced females produced pheromone blend with higher ZZ ratio than lab reared (MD naive females) that typically produced ZZ:EE ratio of 1:1. (2) Male’s origin did not affect its response to pheromone characteristics of lab or field females. (3) A transcriptome study demonstrated many gene-encode enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway, but some of the transcripts were produced in differing levels in the MD resistant populations. (4) Male origin (field or lab) influenced males’ choice of mate with strong preference to females sharing the same origin. However, when MD was applied, males of both populations were more attracted to females originated form failed MD treated fields. We conclude that in MD failed fields a change in the population mean of the ratio of the pheromone components had occurred. Males in these fields had changed their search “image” accordingly while keeping the wide range of response to all pheromone characteristics. The change in the pheromone blend is due to different level of pheromone related enzyme production.

Hemisarcoptes (Acari: Hamisarcoptidae) is a parasite of scale insects (Diaspididae), tenacious pests of vascular plants. Hemisarcoptes also has a stenoxenic phoretic (dispersal) relationship with Chilocorus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Chilocorus feeds on diaspidids, transports mites as they feed, and has been applied to the control of scales, with limited success. U.S.-Israeli cooperation focused on this mite-beetle interaction so that a two-component system could be applied to the control of scale insects effectively. Life history patterns of Hemisarcoptes were investigated in response to host plant type and physical parameters. Field and lab data indicated that mites attack all host stages of scales tested, but preferred adult females. Scale species and host plant species influenced the bionomics of Hemisarcoptes. Beetle diet also influenced survival of phoretic mites. Mites use a ventral sucker plate to extract material from Chilocorus, that is essential for development. Seven alkaloids were found in the hemolymph of Chilocorus and three were characterized. Examination of the subelytral surface of Chilocorus indicated that microsetae play a role in the number and distribution of mites a beetle transports. While Hemisarcoptes can be innoculatd into agroecosystems using various indigenous or imported Chilocorus species, the following are preferred: C. bipustulatus, C. cacti, C. distigma, C. fraternus, C. orbus, and C. tristis.

The whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is a serious agricultural pest that afflicts a wide variety of ornamental and vegetable crop species. To enable survival on a great diversity of host plants, whiteflies must have the ability to avoid or detoxify numerous different plant defensive chemicals. Such toxins include a group of insect-deterrent molecules called glucosinolates (GSs), which also provide the pungent taste of Brassica vegetables such as radish and cabbage. In our BARD grant, we used the whitefly B. tabaci and Arabidopsis (a Brassica plant model) defense mutants and transgenic lines, to gain comprehensive understanding both on plant defense pathways against whiteflies and whitefly defense strategies against plants. Our major focus was on GSs. We produced transgenic Arabidopsis plants accumulating high levels of GSs. At the first step, we examined how exposure to high levels of GSs affects decision making and performance of whiteflies when provided plants with normal levels or high levels of GSs. Our major conclusions can be divided into three: (I) exposure to plants accumulating high levels of GSs, negatively affected the performance of both whitefly adult females and immature; (II) whitefly adult females are likely to be capable of sensing different levels of GSs in their host plants and are able to choose, for oviposition, the host plant on which their offspring survive and develop better (preference-performance relationship); (III) the dual presence of plants with normal levels and high levels of GSs, confused whitefly adult females, and led to difficulties in making a choice between the different host plants. These findings have an applicative perspective. Whiteflies are known as a serious pest of Brassica cropping systems. If the differences found here on adjacent small plants translate to field situations, intercropping with closely-related Brassica cultivars could negatively influence whitefly population build-up. At the second step, we characterized the defensive mechanisms whiteflies use to detoxify GSs and other plant toxins. We identified five detoxification genes, which can be considered as putative "key" general induced detoxifiers because their expression-levels responded to several unrelated plant toxic compounds. This knowledge is currently used (using new funding) to develop a new technology that will allow the production of pestresistant crops capable of protecting themselves from whiteflies by silencing insect detoxification genes without which successful host utilization can not occur. Finally, we made an effort to identify defense genes that deter whitefly performance, by infesting with whiteflies, wild-type and defense mutated Arabidopsis plants. The infested plants were used to construct deep-sequencing expression libraries. The 30- 50 million sequence reads per library, provide an unbiased and quantitative assessment of gene expression and contain sequences from both Arabidopsis and whiteflies. Therefore, the libraries give us sequence data that can be mined for both the plant and insect gene expression responses. An intensive analysis of these datasets is underway. We also conducted electrical penetration graph (EPG) recordings of whiteflies feeding on Arabidopsis wild-type and defense mutant plants in order to determine the time-point and feeding behavior in which plant-defense genes are expressed. We are in the process of analyzing the recordings and calculating 125 feeding behavior parameters for each whitefly. From the analyses conducted so far we conclude that the Arabidopsis defense mutants do not affect adult feeding behavior in the same manner that they affect immatures development. Analysis of the immatures feeding behavior is not yet completed, but if it shows the same disconnect between feeding behavior data and developmental rate data, we would conclude that the differences in the defense mutants are due to a qualitative effect based on the chemical constituency of the phloem sap.

As national education programs incorporate HIV prevention into school curricula, policymakers and educators need to know what they can expect from these initiatives. Can such courses influence the behavior of students as well as their knowledge and attitudes? If not, what can these courses reasonably be expected to accomplish, and what part can they play in overall HIV programming for youth? To help answer these questions, the Thai Ministry of Education, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), and the Horizons Program embarked on a study to examine the outcomes of a school-based HIV/AIDS program for Thai college students. The curriculum for the “Teens on Smart Sex” Program consists of eight two-hour sessions conducted once a week among college-age students. As noted in this brief, the program successfully improved students’ HIV-related knowledge and attitudes about people living with HIV/AIDS. It also improved female students’ attitudes about condom use and increased actual use. There was no evidence, however, of the adoption of other protective behaviors, such as abstinence, among males and females. Evaluation findings are being used to strengthen course activities so that course impact can result in greater behavior change.
