The present article discusses the ways in which ethnic Japanese Muslim women are perceived and treated in contemporary Japanese society, through a case study of one Japanese female convert. It examines the complexity found in her experiences of marginality by highlighting three inter-related modes of marginalization: marginality deriving from being a Muslim, from being a Japanese Muslim and from being a woman. It discusses her responses to these discourses of marginalization and how she establishes her identity as a Muslim, through responding to them. The article first shows that ethnic Japanese Muslims suffer ‘inverted marginality’—marginalization due to belonging to the ethno-cultural majority. It then demonstrates their experience of ‘double marginality’, marginalization by the wider Japanese society and foreign-born Muslims alike. It argues that their experience of double marginality has partly resulted from the absence of a self-sufficient ethnic community of Japanese Muslims. Ethnic Japanese Muslim women experience further marginalization when they become targets for criticism of Islam, such as that Islam is a religion of female subjugation—a notion of gender orientalism that deprives these women of their agency. However, the process of responding to these challenges of marginality helps ethnic Japanese Muslim women consolidate their identity as Muslims.

Rethinking the gendered experiences of a Western female narrated in the memoir Educated (2018), this paper points out the contradictions between the theory and practice of gender equality in the West. De Beauvoir’s (1949) idea of female passivity and Butler’s (1999) challenge to the stability of the category ‘women’ are utilized together with the discursive strategies proposed by Van Dijk (2007) to conclude. through the use of actor description, situation description, hyperbole and distancing, for the feminist analysis of patriarchal influence on the female under the cover of paternity, whereby the female subject is conditioned to consider herself impure due to her gendered identity, sartorial practices and desire to be educated. On the contrary, the memoirist by employing the strategies of polarization and situation description shows that the female subject can only challenge the patriarchal dominance because of the changed consciousness that came out of the personal resistance to patriarchy

Abstract The concepts of sex and gender existed in the imperial Roman world. Although there existed a sliding scale of sex and gender, gender was largely pre-determined at the time of one’s birth based on one’s sexual anatomy and concurrently, gender acculturation of the male and the female began. It was a conventional notion that women were marginal compared to freeborn men by the virtue of gender. Although the Romans improved the legal independence of free women, Greco-Roman literary evidence harbors various theoretical positions regarding female social marginality and submission, which were largely associated with slaves, and also underscores the paradox that female position of authority was only meant to be negotiated with the position of subordination. This article deals with the issue of female gender marginality and enculturation of female servility in the imperial Roman world. Various Roman literary traditions link women to slaves in their shared stereotypes and evidence that women and slaves were seen to share affinity for vulnerable penetrability in the face of the male sexual and domestic violence.

Abstract This study aims to analyze the forms the other towards women in the novel Kogoeru Kiba by Nonami Asa. Data were collected from a Japanese novel entitled Kogoeru Kiba by Nonami Asa using qualitative methods with content analysis techniques and then analyzed using Simone de Beauvoir's existential feminism perspective (Beauvoir, 1989) described descriptively. The results of the analysis are three marginalities obtained from colleagues, general public and from husband. Women are marginalized because they do things that are considered not domestic field than what women should do. Women are considered to do something that should only be done by men. Future research is expected to discuss the resistance to marginality experienced by female figure by using existential feminism. Feminine sensibilities and gender issues are based on different cultures and diasporic essence. The desire and aspirations of women of different countries are not similar. Their demands are influenced by a number of variables, including familial, societal/racial, marital, economic, cultural, and personal ones. It is considered incorrect to compare Indian feminism to western feminism, which is characterised by radical rules, in such a varied culture. In its early stages, Indian feminism was wholly liberal and addressed every facet of mankind. There hasn't been a significant political or social uprising in India against the male-dominated culture. In beginning, they seek to address the inequality and dissimilarity that existed between males and females. They desired to bridge the gaps between men and women through their social revolt and provide the psychological reason for the male violence against women. Some feminist intellectuals extended the gender issues focusing the intention on rape and other forms of sexual violence. To them, such gender issues of exploitation are because of the male dominant society. They agree with Liberal feminists that material change and patriarchy is the sole reason for women's discrimination. They argue against the existing tradition of love, marriage, and gender inequality and demand equal social rights. The women writers like Shashi Deshpande have used fiction to explore and share their experiences. The myriad conflicts, which they face in everyday lives, are woven into the fictional world of their creation. To Shashi Deshpande, traditional beliefs also play a major role in female discrimination.

Marginality is not only a state of tangible/physical suffering but also a condition of mind. However, the nature of both is complementary to each other as the troubled psychic state results only from material reality. The adjective ‘celestial’ in the title seems to negate any material claims to one’s deprived state as emanating from structural inequities. The marginal state of major female characters in Jokha Alharthi’s (b. 1978) the Man Booker International Prize-Winning novel Celestial Bodies (2019) has its basis in the patriarchal functioning of society. Marilyn Booth writes, “The impact of a strong patriarchal system on both women and subordinate men is unsparing but it shapes different generations, and individuals, distinctly as it leads to both suffering and confrontation” (x). All three sisters Mayya, Khawla and Asma in the Celestial Bodies have their own trajectories of hidden pain. Apart from it, marginality as observed in the case of Zarifa, the female slave who unconsciously submits herself to a better life, results from ignorance as she does not find anything appalling even in being a concubine to Merchant Sulayman, the slave owner. Another note of marginality stems in the portrayal of Habib and his son Sanjar who view slavery as an “involuntary human servitude” (Wright n.pag.) and hence break themselves free from the shackles of bondage by leaving the house of Sulayman. While the former realizes that despite being his wife, Zarifa is also his master’s keep which is a blow to his masculinity; his son also identifies selfish motives in Sulayman’s doing a few things for his betterment. Another victim of a husbandly suspicion is Fatima, the wife of Sulayman whose death remains a mystery until it is learnt that it was her husband who hastens her to a poisonous death as her affair with a slave is suspected. Mayya’s daughter London’s marginal state cements the vulnerable status of women as despite from a rich family she is treated in terms of her supposed weak gender as her voluntary marriage to a peasant’s ends in a fiasco. The present paper seeks to provide answer to different types of marginalities found in the Celestial Bodies along with charting out a course of passive to active resistance as adopted by different characters.

Sir Thomas Malory’s fifteenth-century prose romance, Le Morte Darthur, depicts public and private identity as distinct and often incompatible halves of the Arthurian courtly community. In addition, masculine and feminine identity are represented as having different roles and functions within the text. Arthurian scholarship has predominantly focused on Malory’s portrayals of masculine and communal identity, as exemplified by central figures such as Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. However, in the past two decades an increasingly concentrated interest in the Morte’s female protagonists has emerged. As a contribution to this burgeoning site of critical inquiry I offer a tripartite case study of three marginal queens in this text: Igraine, Morgause and Morgan. Despite being the mother and sisters of King Arthur, these women have attracted comparatively little attention, either as individuals or as a family. This thesis argues that Malory presents noteworthy portraits of marginality in Igraine, Morgause and Morgan, which reveal the significance of space to the formation of identity in the Morte. Each of these protagonists is imagined in a variety of spaces in the Arthurian world: narrative, social, geographical, physical and emotional. Such spaces are contained within two principal romance locations, the court and quest wilderness, in which protagonists’ expressions and activities differ. Courts are typically governed by patriarchal authorities such as kings, knights, magicians and clerics, who privilege masculine public identity and political issues affecting the Arthurian community. By contrast, the quest wilderness encompasses places governed by what are termed ‘matriarchal’ authorities including queens, ladies, supernatural women and nuns, where private identity and individual emotions are more readily expressed. Marginal women speak and act in both the court and quest wilderness, but their identities are articulated differently in each. This thesis argues that Malory’s text presents moments when Igraine, Morgause and Morgan are marginalised by the Arthurian community critically, whilst the development of their individual identities in the quest wilderness is depicted sympathetically. As such, an examination of these protagonists’ movements across a variety of spatial boundaries in the world of the story as well as the narrative’s composite structure offers a revised reading of identity, gender and marginality in Malory studies. This thesis challenges two dominant assumptions about female voice and agency in the field. Firstly, that marginality is primarily a position of disempowerment, particularly for medieval women. Secondly, that marginal individuals are inherently subversive and threaten the Arthurian community.

Since new queer cinema of the 90s, resistant films have favoured temporal paradigms and mobility, over spatiality and emplacement. Problematically, however, the temporal mobility of queer could be seen to reinforce, rather than contest, the position of a fixed, singular heterosexuality. Furthermore, considering what Luce Irigaray identifies as the historical and cultural hierarchy of masculinised time over feminised space, it risks reaffirmmg a heterocentric logic where woman's relation to space is passive rather than active. This thesis challenges the above implications.

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the influence of race and gender specific economic disadvantage, gender inequality, and other social disadvantage indicators on female non-violent and violent property crime offending. This dissertation found that economic marginality, gender inequality, and exogenous factors of social disorganization do explain some of the variation in women's offending. Economic marginality predicted total women's non-violent and violent offending, but only Black women's non-violent offending. Gender inequality was associated with women's non-violent property crime offending for total, white, Black, and Hispanic women. Generally, the key independent variables are better able to explain variation in non-violent offending than violent property crime offending for Black and Hispanic women.

The usual structure of a burundian household is based on a male authority : a husband, an older brother, even a son. When this classical structure collapses, following the death, divorce or desertion of the male head of household, women enter a new status, which the patriarcal and patrilinear society doesn’t accept.Considered as deviant and marginal despise their importance in the country and its capital (20% to 25%, depending on the sources), female headed households are both a consequence of cycles of violence since the Decolonization, but also demonstrate a deep change in social structures. Women heads of households are frequently the target of unfavorable representations. In a hitorical and social context of « militarized peace », these households are considered vulnerable, morally and physically. Seen as a threat to individual, familial and social balance, their are associated to a vulnerability and a permissivity which authorize both symbolical and physical violences. Beyond female headed households, sociopolitical and demographical crisis emphasizes a social tension in private and public spaces, revealing a certain crisis of masculinity. However, forms of resilience can be observed by women heads oh households, in different areas : in livelihood strategies, matrimonial and familial field, and also in their children’s education

A widespread HIV/AIDS epidemic was confirmed in Ethiopia at the beginning of the 1990s. The epidemic is distributed very unevenly between one region of the country and another, but is essentially concentrated in the towns where the HIV prevalence rate is at its highest level among young adult women. Various forms of economic and social deprivation are observed among urban population and more particularly among women consistent with a predominantly female internal geographic mobility and very significant levels of marital instability. HIV/AIDS was an aggravating factor in these forms of economic and social privation marginality, and gave rise to a mobilization of socially underprivileged sick people who grouped together around their afflictions in order to confront their condition by seeking different forms of aid and psychosocial support from the various non-governmental and humanitarian organisations. This mobilisation then expanded, and was structured around global strategies for facing the epidemic, and at the same time led to unprecedented levels of investment in the Ethiopian healthcare system in terms of economic, human, technical and biomedical resources. The strategies for widespread free access to ARVs that were implemented in Ethiopia thanks to the development of partnerships with multilateral aid organizations, the countries involved in bilateral cooperation and global health organisations gradually became involved in different ways in the struggle against poverty. More particularly, they facilitated the global care of HIV positive women from the population that was deemed to be poor based on their medical condition, whereas targeting of this population is only imperfectly obtained through policies to reduce poverty. By the use of data gathered during the ethnographic studies carried out in Ethiopia between 2007 and 2010, the precise aim of this thesis is to study the impact that policies of access to care have had on the social representation of female poverty in Ethiopia through the development of a variety of forms of solidarity among the most marginalised citizens and their access to various material and symbolic resources. As a privileged observatory of the historical process of development of the Ethiopian State from the perspective of its practices in a highly extraversive situation, the struggle against HIV/AIDS results in a space for new citizenship experiences on the part of socially-marginalized HIV-positive women, in relation to the various forms of social mobility engendered by their participation as lay actors in the functioning of the social and health care devices dedicated to containing this epidemic

The texts of Maria Velho da Costa and Teolinda Gersão are inhabited by landscapes, archetypes and self-reflexivity configured in margins, peripheral zones, that simultaneously unveil the central place occupied by the female subject. The matter of the first section of this work, the concept of landscape hinges on the ones of archetype [the archetypal relation] and of self-reflexivity - both being respectively dealt with in the second and in the third sections of this work - through a co-ordinate they share: space considered in these three aspects, the physical, the social and the mental. Landscapes appear in a physical margin in relation to the centre inhabited by the subject that builds them. Embodied by female characters, the archetypes of the Amazon, the Witch and the Madwoman emblematize these characters’ being excluded from the social circle as they are being pushed off to the periphery, whether it be the wilderness or the lunatic asy! lum. Situated in the margins of the text, “beside” the would-be content of the work, self-reflexivity turns out to be a marginal place with regard to the centre, traditionally held by the diegesis. This study aims at analysing configurations of landscapes, archetypes, archetypal relations and reflections on writing within fictions that, while possessing a peripheral and marginal dimension, still manage to paradoxically contribute to rendering female subjectivities and identity quests sought by the Authors and the female narrators and characters whose central vitality unsteadies dichotomies and binary oppositions

AbstractIn this paper, I explore the dynamics of an educational reform aimed at transforming individual and collective attitudes towards school among Gypsy/Roma families living in urban spaces of advanced social marginality. In Perpignan, Gypsy/Roma people are highly marginalized, living in a deprived urban environment (violence, unemployment, poor housing conditions, female-headed households, problematic night life) and following their cultural and customary rules and values. These play a crucial role in weak school performance. In 2005, city riots pushed municipal, community, and educational stakeholders to act. Policymakers implemented an experimental national policy in Perpignan from 2007 to 2015, in which they treated education as the cornerstone of necessary change. This public policy opened schools to their social and ethnic environment, as socioenvironmental settings were utilized as a performative tool for school achievement and success.

The essay uses the women of the English Cantos of Don Juan to tease out the debate on Byron’s position on the margins of Romanticism relative to Neo-Classical or Romantic expectations. The essay also raises the question whether Byron’s Romanticism is ironised out of existence and whether his Neo-Classicism is as straightforward a return to Popean satire as it might on occasion seem. The three main female characters, Adeline, Aurora and Fitz-Fulke help the reader to focus on these questions, since the whole tissue of the English Cantos returns to them time and again and underlines the fact that the experience of reading Don Juan is often paradoxically elegiac, for all its humour and sense of the energy of life.

Que font les rennes après Noël? is narrated in alternating paragraphs by a female second-person narrator (vous) and several male first-person narrators (je). The woman recounts her life from a child up to the age of forty-four. She has always loved animals and is haunted by the question of what reindeer do after Christmas. Overprotected by her parents, the narrator is a Jew in Catholic France who has long suppressed her homosexuality, and thus has always felt like a misfit. The male narrators—a veterinarian, a zookeeper, a laboratory researcher, a butcher, a wolf trainer, and a stock farmer—all work with animals. The protagonist gradually learns about the horrible suffering humans cause animals and comes to identify more with them than with other humans. Rosenthal hints at the connection—expressed by Jacques Derrida, Élisabeth de Fontenay and especially Charles Patterson in Eternal Treblinka—between the human tragedy of the Holocaust and the animal tragedy of the abattoir.

Chapter 3 shifts the focus of the story to New York City, one of the leading centers of the industry and one of the few places where the workers were able to form a union. This campaign began on January 1, 1912, with New York City’s first general strike of laundry workers. Organizers from the Laundry Workers International Union (LWIU), which was affiliated with the American Federation of Labor, rushed to the scene, eager to assert control over the grassroots uprising, but it was the middle- and working-class leaders of the Women’s Trade Union League (WTUL) whom the women turned to for support. Women laundry workers, including Margaret Hinchey and WTUL allies such as wealthy and well-connected WTUL president Mary Dreier and WTUL organizer and socialist Leonora O’Reilly, organized parades and picket lines and liaised with churches, suffrage leaders, and other female-led movements and institutions. This chapter demonstrates that the gender-based alliances forged during this strike underlined the vitality of the Progressive Era women’s labor movement and its potential to empower the most exploited workers, but they also exposed the women’s marginality on the edges of a labor movement led by and for men, as well as the potential for class tensions between upper-class feminist labor allies and working women.

Introduction: Emerging evidence suggests that cannabis is commonly used to aid sleep among college students. Although outcome expectancies have been associated with the progression of cannabis use, sleep-related expectancies have not been included in widely-used cannabis expectancy measures. Recently, the Sleep-Related Cannabis Expectancies Questionnaire (SR-CEQ; Goodhines et al., 2020) was developed and initial evidence for its 2-factor structure was obtained in a general college sample (including non-cannabis users). However, the SR-CEQ’s associations with sleep and cannabis use behaviors among cannabis sleep aid users is unknown. This study aimed to replicate the previous factor structure and test construct and concurrent validity of the SR-CEQ among college students using cannabis for sleep aid. Method: Cross-sectional data were drawn from 94 college students reporting at least bimonthly cannabis use for sleep aid. Five multivariate outliers on the SR-CEQ were excluded, resulting in an analytic sample of 89 (Mage=19.92 [SD=1.19; range=18-22]; 66% female; 72% White, 12% Multiracial, 7% Asian, 5% Black or African-American, 1% self-reported Other and 3% did not disclose; 14% Hispanic/Latinx). Students completed an online survey of sleep and substance use behaviors. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) replicated the 2-factor structure (Positive and Negative Sleep-Related Cannabis Expectancies), bivariate correlations tested associations with related constructs (sleep and cannabis use behaviors/beliefs), and independent-samples t-tests further explicated relevant group differences. Results: After dropping item 5 (factor loading<.40), CFA with a 2-factor structure indicated good fit to the data (χ2(41)=66.76, p=.01; CFI=0.94; SRMR=0.07; RMSEA=0.08 [90% CI=0.05, 0.12]). Positive sleep-related cannabis expectancies (α=.84) were associated with dysfunctional beliefs about sleep (r=.24, p=.02), but not insomnia symptoms, poor sleep quality, or frequencies of cannabis use (ps>.05). Students who used cannabis more frequently in general (≥36 of 60 days, per median split) reported more positive sleep-related cannabis expectancies (t[86]=1.99, p=.05, Cohen’s d=0.42). Negative sleep-related cannabis expectancies (α=.80) were not associated with any cannabis or sleep variables assessed (ps>.05). Negative sleep-related cannabis expectancies were marginally lower among students with greater frequency of general cannabis use (t[87]=-1.89, p=.06, Cohen’s d=0.40) and cannabis use for sleep aid (≥3 times/week, per median split; t[87]=-1.87, p=.06, Cohen’s d=0.40). Further, greater negative sleep-related cannabis expectancies were reported among male (versus female) students (t[87]=2.30, p=.02, Cohen’s d=0.51). Conclusion: Overall, replication of this 2-factor structure showed good fit to the data and both subscales demonstrated good internal consistency. Although replication is needed, results suggest that college students using cannabis for sleep aid may have less negative sleep-related expectancies about sleep. Positive sleep-related cannabis expectancies were associated with dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, but not sleep behaviors or cannabis use. Current novel findings extend existing knowledge of general non-sleep related cannabis expectancies among cannabis users in terms of cannabis use correlates. Findings can help identify at-risk students and modifiable risk factors that can be targeted to minimize harm with cannabis sleep aid use. Future research is needed among larger samples to (a) assess generalizability to varied populations and (b) clarify temporal sequencing of potential consequences through longitudinal designs.
