Mistletoes have frequently been found to transpire more rapidly than their hosts, and usually maintain a more negative water potential. Leaf water potential and diffusive conductance were monitored from the end of a dry summer (March) through a wet winter (to August) on the mistletoe Amyema miquelii (Lehm. ex Miq.) Tieghem and its host Eucalyptus fasciculosa F. Muell. The calculated transpiration rate of the mistletoe was greater than that of its host, but water potential data showed two unusual features. Firstly, the parasite pre-dawn water potential always remained lower than that of the host, regardless of the host's water status. Secondly, the parasite water potential during the day was on one occasion less negative than that of the host, i.e. a reverse gradient. Tissue water relations studies showed that A. miquelii leaves had more negative solute potential and a larger water capacitance than E. fasciculosa leaves. The unusual features of the seasonal data were explained in terms of a large haustorial resistance to water flow and hysteresis in the relationship between transpiration and water potential in the mistletoe leaf. This hysteresis was thought to be due to the contribution of stored leaf water to transpiration.

Leaf (xylem) water potentials were measured in summer and autumn on four species, Eucalyptus fasciculosa, Pultenaea daphnoides, Platylobium obtusangulum and Acacia myrtifolia growing in the understorey of sclerophyll stringybark vegetation in the Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia. Plants regenerating in an area burnt by bushfire 2 years previously were compared with plants in an adjacent unburnt area. The Acacia was killed by fire and subsequently regenerated from seed. The other three species survived and resprouted from basal or epicormic buds. It was expected that shrubs regenerating from basal buds would be better hydrated in summer, as a large intact root system would supply a reduced canopy, and that seedlings, with smaller root systems than unburnt adults, would be more stressed. The Acacia was indeed significantly more stressed during summer in the burnt area. However the Platylobium was also more stressed than the controls, while the Pultenaea showed no significant differences between burnt and control areas. The Eucalyptus showed no differences between sites, nor between any of the three sampling times. The more negative water potentials of some of the regenerating plants are explained by greater exposure of surface soil on the burnt site, leading to more rapid drying of the surface soil in summer.

Background and purpose: Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common focal intractable epilepsy. Uncinate fasciculus is a white fiber bundle that connects the orbitofrontal cortex with the anterior temporal lobe, and is implicated in most of the superior mental functions. There is evidence of uncinate fasciculus as a propagation pathway of seizures from temporal lobe. The aim of the study is to determine uncinate fasciculus alterations in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, through fractional anisotropy. Methods: Thirty-three patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (10 right and 23 left) were studied. All of them were right-handed and had left hemisphere dominance for language. A 1.5 T MR imaging scanner was used to obtain diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Fractional anisotropy of uncinate fasciculus was calculated through TBSS (Tract Based Spatial Statistics). Statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS (v. 25). Results: Fractional anisotropy was higher in right uncinate fasciculus, regardless of epilepsy side. Right uncinate fasciculus, at the insula level, showed lower fractional anisotropy in patients with right temporal lobe epilepsy. Conclusions: Results support the evidence of uncinate fasciculus as a pathway of propagation in temporal lobe epilepsy, specially at insular level.

Leishmaniasis is the generic denomination to the neglected diseases caused by more than 20 species of protozoa belonging to the genus Leishmania. The toxic and parenteral-delivered pentavalent antimonials remain to be the first-line treatment. However, all the current used drugs have restrictions. The species Aureliana fasciculata (Vell.) Sendtner var. fasciculata is a native Brazilian species parsimoniously studied on a chemical point of view. In this study, the antileishmanial activity of A. fasciculata was evaluated. Among the evaluated samples of the leaves, the dichloromethane partition (AFfDi) showed the more pronounced activity, with IC50 1.85 µg/ml against promastigotes of L. amazonensis. From AFfDi, two active withanolides were isolated, the Aurelianolides A and B, with IC50 7.61 μM and 7.94 μM, respectively. The withanolides also proved to be active against the clinically important form, the intracellular amastigote, with IC50 2.25 μM and 6.43 μM for Aurelianolides A and B, respectively. Furthermore, withanolides showed results for in silico parameters of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) similar to miltefosine, the reference drug, and were predicted as good oral drugs, with the advantage of not being hepatotoxic. These results suggest that these compounds can be useful as scaffolds for planning drug design.

Object Disturbance of the arcuate fasciculus in the dominant hemisphere is thought to be associated with language-processing disorders, including conduction aphasia. Although the arcuate fasciculus can be visualized in vivo with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography, its involvement in functional processes associated with language has not been shown dynamically using DTI tractography. In the present study, to clarify the participation of the arcuate fasciculus in language functions, postoperative changes in the arcuate fasciculus detected by DTI tractography were evaluated chronologically in relation to postoperative changes in language function after brain tumor surgery. Methods Preoperative and postoperative arcuate fasciculus area and language function were examined in 7 right-handed patients with a brain tumor in the left hemisphere located in proximity to part of the arcuate fasciculus. The arcuate fasciculus was depicted, and its area was calculated using DTI tractography. Language functions were measured using the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB). Results After tumor resection, visualization of the arcuate fasciculus was increased in 5 of the 7 patients, and the total WAB score improved in 6 of the 7 patients. The relative ratio of postoperative visualized area of the arcuate fasciculus to preoperative visualized area of the arcuate fasciculus was increased in association with an improvement in postoperative language function (p = 0.0039). Conclusions The role of the left arcuate fasciculus in language functions can be evaluated chronologically in vivo by DTI tractography after brain tumor surgery. Because increased postoperative visualization of the fasciculus was significantly associated with postoperative improvement in language functions, the arcuate fasciculus may play an important role in language function, as previously thought. In addition, postoperative changes in the arcuate fasciculus detected by DTI tractography could represent a predicting factor for postoperative language-dependent functional outcomes in patients with brain tumor.

Following active growth, the aquatic gram-negative rod Prolinoborus fasciculus (Aquaspirillum fasciculus) exhibited a mass conversion from its culturable rod form to a nonculturable coccoid form. Chloramphenicol did not prevent the conversion. Attempts to obtain variants that would not convert to the coccoid form were unsuccessful. Although the coccoid form fluoresced with acridine orange, agarose gel electrophoresis revealed extensive ribosomal RNA degradation. Poly-Ã -hydroxybutyrate, abundant in the vegetative rods, was not detectable in the coccoid cells. The results suggest that the coccoid form of A. fasciculus is a degenerative form rather than part of a life cycle.

The stingless bees, stingless bees, social, found in tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. In Brazil they are all over the country, especially the North and Northeast Melipona fasciculata Smith (Apidae, Meliponini), popularly known as tiúba, cultivated by indigenous and rural populations for the production of honey, geopropolis and accumulate pollen. This is produced from the natural flower pollen, mixed with nectar and salivary secretions of the bee and popularly used as a nutritional feed and antifungal to treat diseases, colitis, allergic reactions. The study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antioxidant, antimicrobial and pollen of hydroalcoholic extracts of pollen collected by Melipona fasciculata Smith bee. The pollen samples (09) were collected in meliponários in the states of Pará and Maranhão, Brazil, which were separately macerated with 70% ethyl alcohol for 48 hours obtaining extractive solutions, which were filtered and concentrated in a rotary evaporator, obtaining If the pollen hydroalcoholic extracts (EHP). The extracts were evaluated in vitro antioxidant activity by methods DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidrazila) and FRAP (reduced iron), quantification of the total flavonoid content (aluminum chloride) and total polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu reagent) measured by UV-Vis and evaluation of the in vitro antimicrobial activity by agar diffusion method. Pollens were extracted and subjected to acetolysis for palynological studies. The chemical components of the extract were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC / MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC / MS / MS). The EHP showed EC50 values between 70.73 -398.74 mg / ml and 0.09 ± 0.06% - 1.26 ± 0.13 mmol Fe 2+ / g extract, total polyphenolic content varied between 5, 4 ± 0.01 -14.66 ± 0.04 and 0.59 ± 0.003 -1.10 ± 0.01 for the total flavonoid content. The chemical constituents of pollen extracts identified by GC / MS showed the predominant fatty acids, amino acids, phenolic acids and sugars such as classes of chemical compounds present in the extracts analyzed. The analysis of extracts by LC / MS / MS, it was possible to identify the flavonoids kaempferol, isohamenetina, afzelin, quercetrin, cirsiliol, derivatives cirsiliol, tilirosídeo, gluconic acid, glucitol, quercetrin, isohamenetina-3-O-rutinoside, hydroxyssaffor yellow, besides gluconic acid and glucitol. The EHP 09 (pollen collected in the state of Pará) was the most active against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Streptococcus mutans. The content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity vary according to the types of pollen grains observed in pollen evaluation. The data contribute to chemical and biological parameters of identity fixing and quality of accumulated pollen by Melipona fasciculata grown in municipos Palmeirândia, Fernando Falcao in the state of Maranhão and Pará as subsidies for future legislation stingless bee products, and also contribute to aggregate values to meliponícolas products.
Os meliponíneos, abelhas sem ferrão, sociais, encontradas em regiões tropicais e subtropicais da América do Sul e Central, África, Sudeste da Ásia e Austrália. No Brasil estão em todo o país, destacando-se as regiões Norte e Nordeste Melipona fasciculata Smith (Apidae, Meliponini), popularmente conhecida por tiúba, cultivada por populações indígenas e rurais para a produção de mel, geoprópolis e por acumular pólen. Este é produzido a partir do pólen floral, misturado com néctar e secreções salivares da abelha e usado popularmente como alimento nutricional e para tratar doenças antifúngicas, colites, reações alérgicas. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a composição química, atividade antioxidante, antimicrobiana e palinológica dos extratos hidroalcoólicos do pólen coletado pela abelha Melipona fasciculata Smith. As amostras de pólen (09) foram coletadas em meliponários nos estados do Pará e Maranhão, Brasil, as quais foram separadamente maceradas com álcool etílico 70% por 48 horas, obtendo as soluções extrativas, as quais foram filtradas e concentradas em evaporador rotativo, obtendo-se os extratos hidroalcoólicos de pólen (EHP). Nos extratos foram avaliados atividade antioxidante in vitro pelos métodos DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazila) e FRAP (redução de ferro), quantificação dos teores de flavonoides totais (cloreto de aluminio) e polifenóis totais (reagente Folin−Ciocalteu) medidos por espectrofotometria de UV-Vis e avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana in vitro pelo método de difusão em agar. Os pólens foram extraídos e submetidos à acetólise para os estudos palinológicos. Os componentes químicos dos extratos foram identificados por cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massas (CG/EM) e cromatografia liquida acoplada com espectrometria de massas (LC/EM/EM). Os EHP apresentaram valores de CE50 entre 70,73 -398,74 µg/mL e de 0,09 ± 0,06% - 1,26 ± 0,13 mmol Fe2+/g extrato, os teores de polifenólicos totais variaram entre 5,4 ± 0,01 -14,66 ± 0,04 e de 0,59 ± 0,003 -1,10 ± 0,01 para os teores de flavonoides totais. Os constituintes químicos dos extratos de pólen identificados por CG/EM evidenciaram a predominância de ácidos graxos, aminoácidos, ácidos fenólicos e açucares como as classes de compostos químicos presentes nos extratos analisados. Já a análise dos extratos por LC/EM/EM, foi possível a identificação dos flavonoides canferol, isohamenetina, afzelina, quercetrina, cirsiliol, derivados de cirsiliol, tilirosídeo, ácido glucônico, glucitol, quercetrina, isohamenetina-3-O-rutinosídeo, hydroxyssaffor yellow, além do ácido glucônico e glucitol. O EHP 09 (pólen coletado no estado do Pará) foi o mais ativo contra Candida albicans, Candida glabrata e Streptoccus mutans. Os teores de compostos fenólicos e flavonoides, atividade antioxidante e antimicrobiana variam de acordo com os tipos polínicos verificados na avaliação palinológica. Os dados contribuem com parâmetros químicos e biológicos de fixação de identidade e qualidade do pólen acumulado por Melipona fasciculata cultivada nos municipos Palmeirândia, Fernando Falcão no estado do Maranhão e Pará como subsídios para futura legislação de produtos de abelhas sem ferrão, assim contribuem ainda para agregar valores aos produtos meliponícolas.

Este estudo abordou a cadeia de produção e de comercialização e aspectos do consumo do látex medicinal de amapá amargoso (Parahancornia fasciculata) em Belém e Ponta de Pedras, no estado do Pará. A exemplo de muitos outros produtos florestais não-madeireiros (PFNMs), o "leite de amapá", como é localmente conhecido, não figura nas listas de agências oficiais responsáveis pelas estatísticas sobre produção e comercialização de produtos da floresta. Entretanto, o leite de amapá e seu uso no tratamento de doenças das vias respiratórias é amplamente conhecido pela população local. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo trazer à luz diversos aspectos do manejo e uso desse produto, revelando a sua importância na vida de seus produtores e consumidores. Foi utilizada a abordagem da "cadeia da produção ao consumo" partindo-se da comercialização do produto nos centros urbanos até a sua extração na floresta, estratégia que permitiu identificar os atores envolvidos em todo o processo. Consumidores e comerciantes em todos os níveis foram entrevistados. Com os extrativistas do produto foram realizadas oficinas e turnês guiadas nos locais de produção. Com a participação de extrativistas foram também realizados inventários florestais para estudar aspectos da ecologia e manejo da espécie. O volume de oito mil litros de leite de amapá comercializado anualmente na região de Belém demonstra a importância da espécie, principalmente para os consumidores de baixa renda, que são maioria. A tradição secular do uso do látex também revelou-se importante fator na escolha pelo produto. Quando o volume produzido é grande, o leite é vendido diretamente aos mercados urbanos, sem intermediários. A renda obtida com o látex representa, em média, 42% da renda total do extrativismo dos 12 extrativistas que participaram da pesquisa, chegando a 92%. Em uma das áreas inventariadas, a população de árvores de P. fasciculata apresentou grande número de indivíduos e distribuição diamétrica do tipo "J-invertido" o que sugere que a espécie é do tipo clímax e se encontra, nesse local, em equilíbrio dinâmico. Em outros dois locais, entretanto, a população apresentou distribuição mais próxima da curva normal, o que indica forte perturbação do ecossistema. Nesses locais, as árvores também apresentaram número proporcionalmente maior de árvores danificadas pela exploração do látex. Entretanto, o estudo não confirmou a morte de árvores devido à exploração do produto. A utilização da faca de seringueiro para o corte do tronco é uma adaptação recente introduzida pelos extrativistas e provoca significativamente menor dano e permite cicatrização mais rápida do tronco. Além de reduzir as perdas de látex em relação ao uso do facão, reduz o tempo entre duas extrações seguidas. A melhoria na técnica de extração do látex revela que os extrativistas têm conhecimento da anatomia da árvore. O leite de amapá é um produto florestal cuja extração pode ser manejada visando a sua produção sustentável, ao contrário da exploração da madeira da árvore, outro uso competitivo da espécie. O presente estudo revelou que o leite de amapá tem significativo impacto na vida de pessoas da floresta, de comerciantes e de consumidores nos centros urbanos. Possivelmente, entretanto, é somente um dos casos de centenas de PFNMs que têm importância regional, seja na geração de renda seja na oferta de fitoterápicos acessíveis à população de baixa renda, mas que continua invisível às agências governamentais.
This study investigated the production and trade chain as well as aspects of the consumption of the medicinal latex from "amapá-amargoso" in the municipalities of Belém and Ponta de Pedras, Pará State, Brazil. Like many other non-timber forest products (NTFPs), the "amapá milk", as it is locally known, does not figure in the official statistics on forest products. However, the medicine is largely known and used by the local population to treat respiratory diseases. This study was then designed to investigate the several aspects related to the management and use of the product, revealing is importance to the life of producers and consumers. The approach used was the "production to consumption chain", departing from its retailing in urban areas to its extraction in the forest, a strategy that allowed to identify the stakeholders involved in the whole process. Consumers, traders and retailers were interviewed. Workshops and guided visits were done with the extractivists at the production sites. Extractivists participated also in the forest inventories done to study aspects of the ecology and management of the species. The volume of eight thousand liters of amapá milk commercialized annually in the Belém region demonstrates the importance of the species, mainly for the low income consumers, who are the majority. The secular tradition in using the latex also revealed to be an important factor for consumers choice for the product. In cases where the volume produced is large, the milk is sold directly to the urban markets, with no middlemen. The revenue from the latex represents, in average, 42% of the total income from the extractivism, but it may reach 92%. In one the inventoried areas, the population of P. fasciculata trees presented a large number of individuals and a "J-shaped" diameter distribution, which suggests that it is a climax species and it is in dynamic equilibrium in the site. In two other sites, however, the populations present distribution closer to a normal shaped curve, indicating a strong disturbance. In these sites, there was also a large proportion of trees with damaged trunks caused by latex extraction. However, we were not able to affirm the damage caused by latex exploitation leads to the death of the tree. The use of rubber tapper knife was recently introduced by the extractivists and causes less damage to the trunk in addition to allow its quicker recovery. In addition to reduce loss of latex in relation to the use of a machete, the knife also reduces the interval between successive extractions. The improvement of the tapper technique reveals that the extractivists have knowledge on the tree anatomy. The amapá milk is a forest product whose extraction can be managed aiming at a sustainable production, in opposition to the exploitation of the tree timber, another competitive use for the species. This study revealed that the amapá milk has a significant impact on the lives of forest peoples, traders and consumers in urban areas. Possibly, however, it is only one among hundreds of cases of NTFPs which have regional importance, either providing income either offering medicines accessible by low income population, but remains invisible to the governmental agencies.

Geopropolis is a product obtained from the mixture of plant resins collected by bees plus wax, earth or clay. Geopropolis produced by Melipona fasciculata Smith, known as tiúba is traditionally used in inflammatory processes, gastritis, cancer, hemorrhoids, respiratory system disorders, and also as wound healing. It presents in its chemical composition predominantly phenolic acids, triterpenes and hydrolysable tannins. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-ulcer activity and gastroprotective lyophilized hydroalcoholic extract geopropolis of (EHG), from the Maranhense cerrado. The geopropolis was collected in a meliponary in the city of Fernando Falcão, Maranhão, Brazil. The EHG was obtained by maceration in a water-alcohol solution 70%. In the model ethanol ulcer induction than 75%, treatment of mice with EHG, 50 or 100 mg / kg reduced the ulcerous area of 66.6% and 93.2%, respectively, compared with the control group (127.7 ± 9.5 mm2 ). In indomethacin ulcer induction, treatment of mice with EHG the same doses, reduced the ulcerated area in 82.9% and 92.5%, respectively, compared to the control group (119.3 ± 24.2 mm2 ). Histopathological analysis of the stomachs of animals treated with EHG revealed no acute injury of the epithelium when compared with the control group, which revealed a reduction in epithelial integrity. In evaluating the gastric secretion in rats, the extract (100 and 200 mg/kg) induced an increase in total acidity, reduced the volume of secretion in higher dose, and did not alter the pH, the two doses evaluated. The EHG at doses of 100 and 200 mg / kg did not alter gastric emptying, but decreased intestinal transit of rats in dose-dependent manner. Treatment with EHG induced increase (p <0.05) in the production of gastric mucus (236.7 ± 10.4 µg of Alcian blue/ g glandular tissue, 100 mg / kg). In mice pretreated with Nethylmaleimide (NEM), an inhibitor of sulfhydryl compounds, the gastroprotective activity of EHG was reduced to 34.54%, whereas pre-treatment with saline showed a higher protection 56.4 %. Moreover, oral treatment with EHG increased to 18.0 g/ g tissue levels of sulfhydryl groups of the gastric mucosa from injury induced by ethanol (4.9 ± 1.0 mg / g tissue). Furthermore, pre-treatment with NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NAME), an inhibitor of NO synthesis, did not affect the gastroprotective activity of the extract. EHG reduced the ulcer lesions induced chronically by acetic acid in 59%. Histological analysis of the tissue gastric mucosa of rats treated with EHG proved arranged with consolidated fibrosis and decreased inflammation. In this group, staining with PAS has become more intense, with diffuse epithelial marking. The immunohistochemical study showed intense reactivity for COX -2 and low reactivity to Ki-67, the gastric mucosa of animals treated EHG. Taken together, the results suggest that EHG M. fasciculata has antiulcerogenic effect observed in models of acute gastric ulcer induction and chronic and that the gastroprotective action of EHG probably involves the participation of sulfhydryl compounds (-SH) no protein. These effects may be related to the phenolic compounds present in geopropolis the city of Fernando Falcao.
A geoprópolis é um produto obtido a partir da mistura de resinas de plantas coletadas por abelhas, acrescida de cera, terra ou barro. A geoprópolis produzida por Melipona fasciculata Smith, conhecida como tiúba, é tradicionalmente utilizada em processos inflamatórios, gastrite, neoplasias, hemorróidas, afecções do sistema respiratório e ainda, como cicatrizante. Apresenta em sua composição química, predominantemente, ácidos fenólicos, triterpenos e taninos hidrolizáveis. Este estudo teve como objetivo, avaliar a atividade antiulcerogênica e gastroprotetora do extrato hidroalcoólico liofilizado da geoprópolis de Melipona fasciculata (EHG), proveniente do cerrado Maranhense. A geoprópolis foi coletada em um meliponário na cidade de Fernando Falcão, Maranhão, Brasil. O EHG foi obtido por maceração em uma solução hidroalcoólica a 70%. No modelo de indução de úlcera por etanol a 75%, o tratamento de camundongos com EHG, 50 ou 100 mg / kg, reduziu a área ulcerada em 66,6% e 93,2%, respectivamente, quando comparado com o grupo controle (127,7 ± 9,5 mm2 ). Na indução de úlcera por indometacina, o tratamento dos camundongos com EHG nas mesmas doses, reduziu a área ulcerada em 82,9% e 92,5%, respectivamente, em relação ao grupo controle (119,3 ± 24,2 mm2 ). A análise histopatológica dos estômagos de animais tratados com EHG não revelou nenhuma lesão aguda do epitélio, quando comparado com o grupo controle, que revelou uma redução na integridade epitelial. Na avaliação da secreção gástrica, em ratos, o extrato (100 e 200 mg/Kg) induziu ao aumento da acidez total, reduziu o volume da secreção na maior dose e, não alterou o pH, nas duas doses avaliadas. O EHG nas doses de 100 e 200 mg/Kg não alterou o esvaziamento gástrico, mas diminuiu o trânsito intestinal de ratos, de forma dependente de dose. O tratamento com o EHG induziu aumento (p<0,05) na produção de muco gástrico (236,7 ± 10,4 µg de Alcian blue/ g de tecido glandular, 100 mg / kg). Em camundongos pré- tratados com N-etilmaleimida (NEM), um inibidor de compostos sulfidrílicos, a atividade gastroprotetora do EHG, foi reduzida para 34,54%, enquanto que o pré- tratamento com salina mostrou uma proteção maior, de 56,4%. Além disso, o tratamento oral com EHG aumentou para 18,0 μg/g de tecido, os níveis de grupos sulfidrílicos da mucosa gástrica, após lesão induzida pelo etanol (4,9 ± 1,0 μg/g de tecido). Por outro lado, o pré-tratamento com NG nitro-L-arginina (L-NAME), um inibidor da síntese de NO, não influenciou a atividade gastroprotetora do extrato. EHG reduziu as lesões de úlcera, induzida de forma crônica pelo ácido acético, em 59%. Na análise histopatológica, o tecido da mucosa gástrica de ratos tratados com EHG mostrou-se organizado, com fibrose consolidada e diminuição da inflamação. Neste grupo, a marcação com PAS tornou-se mais intensa, com difusa marcação epitelial. A investigação imunohistoquímica mostrou intensa reatividade para COX -2 e baixa reatividade para Ki -67, na mucosa gástrica dos animais tratados EHG. Em conjunto, os resultados sugerem que EHG de M. fasciculata apresenta efeito antiulcerogênico observados nos modelos de indução de úlcera gástrica aguda e crônica e, que a ação gastroprotetora do EHG provavelmente envolve a participação de compostos sulfidrílicos (-SH) não protéicos. Estes efeitos podem estar relacionados aos compostos fenólicos presentes na geoprópolis do município de Fernando Falcão.

Resumo: A fim de elucidar o desempenho da musculatura facial, especificamente da região peribucal, em atividades como a mastigação, a deglutição e a própria fala, a eletromiografia (EMG), na pesquisa clinica de várias especialidades, tem se constituído em um importante instrumento para a investigação das bases fisiopatológicas das alterações que acometem esta musculatura. Este trabalho teve por objetivos analisar eletromiograficamente o músculo orbicular da boca, fascículos superior e inferior em pacientes surdos, respiradores bucais e lábios incompetentes; pacientes surdos respiradores nasais e lábios competentes e pacientes clinicamente normais, respiradores nasais e lábios competentes, comparando-se sete condições clinicas: repouso sem e com contato labial, sucção de água, sopro, projeção e compressão labial e emissão do fonema "PA". Foi verificado que, no grupo dos surdos, a musculatura apresentou uma hiperatividade na maioria dos movimentos analisados, principalmente para o grupo de respiradores bucais com lábios incompetentes e o músculo orbicular da boca, fascículo inferior, foi o que desenvolveu maior atividade eletromiográfica
Abstract: To explain the facial muscles performance, specifically in the peribuccal region in activities such as mastication, deglutition and speech itself, electromyography (EMG), widely used in clinical research, is an important instrument to investigate the physiopathological bases of the changes occurring in these muscles. The aim of this study was to electromyographically analyze the superior and inferior fascicles of the orbicular oris muscle in deaf patients, buccal breathing and incompetent lips, deaf patients, nasal breathing and competent lips and in clinically normal patients, nasal breathing and competent lips, comparing seven clinical conditions: at rest with and without labial contact, sucking water, blowing, labial projection and compression and emission of the phoneme "PA". It was observed that in the deaf patients group, the muscles presented hyperactivity in most of the analyzed movements, mainly in buccal breathing with incompetent lips, and the inferior fascicle of the orbicular oris muscle has shown the highest electromyographic activity

Própolis é composta por substâncias resinosas, coletadas de várias plantas por abelhas africanizadas, adicionando pólen, cera e secreções glandulares, enquanto para a produção de geoprópolis (Geo) as abelhas sem ferrão utilizam materiais resinosos de plantas, cera, e ainda acrescentam terra ou barro. As atividades biológicas da própolis produzida por Apis mellifera têm sido extensivamente estudadas, mas ainda são escassos os trabalhos sobre as propriedades da geoprópolis. Assim, o presente trabalho se propôs a investigar as atividades citotóxica, imunomoduladora, antibacteriana e antifúngica do extrato hidroalcoólico de geoprópolis de Melipona fasciculata Smith. Foi realizada a caracterização química da Geo, verificando que o principal grupo de compostos encontrados foram triterpenos. No tocante às células do carcinoma da laringe humana (HEp-2), Geo apresentou ação inibitória em concentrações mais elevadas; entretanto, esta ação foi somente citostática. Geo apresentou ação imunomoduladora sobre monócitos humanos, estimulando a produção das citocinas estudadas (TNF-α e IL-10). Não foi observada ação antibacteriana contra S. aureus e E. coli, havendo inibição destas linhagens somente com altas concentrações do extrato. Contudo, a associação de Geo com antibióticos favoreceu a ação do cloranfenicol sobre S. aureus. A Geo exerceu ação inibitória sobre Pythium insidiosum, tanto para o isolado obtido de caso humano como de eqüinos. Os resultados sugerem que a Geo apresentou inúmeras propriedades biológicas; contudo, sua ação é menor em comparação à própolis produzida por abelhas africanizadas, talvez devido ao baixo rendimento do extrato e sua difícil solubilidade
Propolis is composed of resinous substances collected from various plants by Africanized honeybees, adding polen, wax and bee secretions, while for geopropolis (Geo) production stingless bees use resinous materials from plants, wax, but also adding mud or clay. The biological activities of propolis produced by Apis mellifera have been extensively studied, but there are few studies on Geo properties. Thus, the present study investigated the cytotoxic, immunomodulatory, antibacterial and antifungal activities of hydroalcoholic extract of Geo produced by Melipona fasciculata Smith. The chemical characterization of Geo was performed, revealing that the main group of compounds was triterpenes. Geo exerted an inhibitory action on human larynx carcinoma cells (HEp-2) using high concentrations, however, it was only a cytostatic action. Geo exhibited immunomodulatory effects on human monocytes, stimulating cytokines production (TNF-α and IL-10). No antibacterial activity was seen against S. aureus and E. coli. However, the combination of Geo with chloramphenicol favored its effect against S. aureus. Geo exerted an inhibitory action against Pythium insidiosum, both for human or equine isolates. Data suggested that Geo presented several properties; however, its activity is lower compared to propolis produced by honeybees, perhaps due to the low yield of the extract and its difficult solubility

The article presents data on the similarity of synthesis and traffic of β-catenin in the cells of zona glomerulosa, fasciculata and reticularis of the rat adrenal cortex during growth of the organ. After termination of the growth, the intracellular traffic of β-catenin into the nucleus was maintained due to a decrease in the incorporation of β-catenin into the outer cytoplasmic membranes, which indicates a decrease in its synthesis.

Background: depression and anxiety are common symptoms observed in people with epilepsy and their relatives. Objective: Investigate associations between white matter (WM) changes and psychiatric symptoms in relatives of TLE patients. Methods: We analyzed brain MRI with DTI from 40 TLE relatives and applied the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). We extracted 6 WM tracts (fornix, cingulum, uncinate fasciculus (UF), inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, corpus callosum, corticospinal tract) and analyzed fractional anisotropy (FA), medium diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD) and radial diffusivity (RD). We investigated correlations between scores and the DTI measures. Symptoms of depression were positive with BDI scores above 10, while symptoms of anxiety were positive with BAI scores above 11. Results: we observed a prevalence of 37.5% of depressive symptoms and 27.5% of anxious symptoms. BDI correlated with FA in the left cingulum (p=0.0003;r=-0.547); and with MD in the right cingulum (p=0.015;r=0.401) and right and left UF (p=0.023;r=0.374 and p=0.021;r=0.363). BDI correlated also with RD in the left and right cingulum (p=0.0003;r=0.583 and p=0.015;r=0.401). BAI correlated with fornix`s FA (p=0.026;r=- 0.352), and with MD in the left cingulum (p=0.01;r=0.415) and left UF (p=0.003;r=0.374) and with RD in the left cingulum (p=0.022;r=0.371) and left UF (p=0.01;r=0.440). Discussion: The regions correlated with psychiatric symptoms here overlap with those affected in patients with epilepsy, however, they differ from areas mainly affected in patients with isolated depression. We hypothesize a possible genetic substrate involved in comorbidity between epilepsy and depression, distinct from psychiatric disease in people without epilepsy.

Introdução: No Brasil existem cerca de 250 espécies de abelhas da tribo Meliponini, muitas das quais estão ameaçadas de extinção, seja pela coleta e destruição de seus ninhos, corte de árvores usadas na nidificação e forrageio e pelo uso de agrotóxicos. Garantir áreas de vegetação nativa protegidas do desmatamento e do uso de agrotóxicos é essencial para garantir a sobrevivência dessas abelhas e os seus serviços ecossistêmicos, como a polinização de plantas nativas e culturas agrícolas. Objetivo: Identificar espécies de abelhas indígenas adequadas para criação em propriedade rural privada, em Murici dos Portelas-PI, onde se pretende criar Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN), em parte desta. Material e métodos: Analisou-se imagens da propriedade, de 52 ha, localizada em 3°15’46.96’’S e 41°57’04.25’’, através de dados obtidos pelo software Google Earth PRO; fez-se 3 visitas ao local, de junho a setembro de 2021, para identificação de fitofisionomia; realizou-se estudo de artigos científicos para identificação de espécies de meliponíneos nativos com ocorrência no estado do Piauí. Resultados: A área consiste em vegetação arbórea de médio porte, dos domínios de Cerrado e Caatinga. A pesquisa bibliográfica identificou as seguintes espécies de abelhas sem ferrão descritas para o Piauí: Mombuca-vermelha (Camargoia nordestina), Moça-branca (Friesiomelitta doederleini), Friesiomelitta flavicornis, Frieseomelitta silvestrii, Mombuca (Geotrigona mombuca), Iraxim (Lestrimelitta rufipes), Manduri (Melipona asilvai), Tiúba (Melipona compressipes), Uruçu-boi (Melipona fuliginosa), Tiúba-grande (Melipona fasciculata), Mandaçaia (Melipona mandacaia), Munduri (Melipona marginata), Mandaçaia (Melipona quadrifasciata), Bugia (Melipona rufiventris), Mandaçaia-da-terra (Melipona quinquefasciata), Uruçu (Melipona scutellaris), Jandaíra (Melipona subnitida), Mirim-da-terra (Paratrigona lineata), Cupira (Partamona ailyae), Boca-de-barro (Partamona chapadicola), Jati (Plebeia flavocincta), Imrê-ti (Scaptotrigona polysticta), Mandaguari (Scaptotrigona postica), Tuibá (Scaptotrigona tubiba), Borá (Tetragona clavipes), Arapuá (Trigona spinipes), Xupé (Trigona hyalinata), Feiticeira (Trigona recursa),Trigonisca sp.. Conclusão: Sugere-se criação das espécies listadas na propriedade, levando-se em conta fatores ambientais e biológicos envolvidos na manutenção da viabilidade de cada espécie. Recomenda-se obtenção de matrizes em criadouros autorizados e iniciar criação comercial, com produção de mel e multiplicação de colmeias. A atividade tem potencial econômico sustentável e poderia ser realizada na área não transformada em RPPN, contribuindo para a economia local e conservação de abelhas indígenas.
