The Playoff Safety Bias occurs when playoff appearances matter more than championships in terms of an individual’s decision-making process when choosing to consume major professional sport from a set of options, referred to as the Sequential Goal Heuristic. This paper (i) demonstrates the potential value of experimental design research in sport management and (ii) provides a consumer-based perspective of playoff structure. Adopting a consumer psychology approach, a 2 (Team performance: good team/bad team) × 3 (Goal: make playoffs every year/ win at least one championship/ maximize number of championships) design was administered via a scenario presented to 152 undergraduate students. The scenario controlled and manipulated the good team/bad team construct by varying the team’s past six season standings. Results revealed that the subjects instructed to maximize the number of playoff appearances had similar estimations of the ideal number of playoff teams, whether fans of a good or bad team. Conversely, of the subjects instructed to either (i) maximize the number of championships won or (ii) maximize the probability of winning at least one championship, fans of good teams over-estimated the optimal number of playoff teams significantly more than fans of bad teams. Implications for future research, practitioner application, and support of similar methods in sport management research are provided.

Ventilation is a very important phase in mining from the point of view of continuous works in the underground mines and safety of the employees. For the ventilation of the active underground mines of JP PEU Resavica the artificial ventilation is used with the main fans installed within the ventilation in active plants. According to the characteristics of the ventilation networks, the appropriate main fans were also selected. In this paper, the characteristics of fans in the active underground mines and an analysis of their works are presented, and the suggestions for their improvement are given within the discussion

In the ventilation design for tunnels above 10km, an axial flow fan of great power needs to be set in ventilation shafts. There are few provisions on the setting modes and less discussion of parallel axial flow fan mode in the Specifications for Design of Ventilation and Lighting of Highway Tunnels. All of these bring a lot of difficulties about the axial fan selection, layout and control design. There is no specialized research on axial flow fan for tunnels and no studies on surge and stall under the interaction of parallel axial flow fan in tunnel in spite of the more and more application of parallel axial flow fan. So, this paper conducts a study on surge and stall under the interaction of parallel axial flow fan in tunnels. Through the study on the operating principle and analysis of parallel axial flow fan, we can know that the noise will increase suddenly, which will in turn result in fan vibration and running instability once the stall occurs. When a fan surges, the air volume and pressure, the motor current will fluctuate sharply, which brings significantly increased vibration and noise. At the same time, the rotary blade and the shell are subject to considerable stress effects and the fan will possibly suffer from great damage. The surge will occur in the unstable zone of axial fan performance curve. The strong pulsation and periodic oscillation of the air flow will increase the noise, which is a serious damage to the fan. So an axial fan should avoid this zone in running. With two axial flow fans of the same power parallel, the mutual influence is not very great. Therefore this research will focus on the efficiency in the case of two fans with a high and a low power parallel. Stall will occur if the outside pressure is greater than the outlet pressure. Once the stall happens, the noise will increase suddenly, which will in turn result in fan vibration and running instability. When two fans parallel, i.e. when the power ratio of the parallel fans is over 5.3, the possibility of the small fan's stall is high, otherwise it is small. With regard to the running efficiency of parallel axial flow fans and the starting safety, it is better to parallel two fans, and the fans with adjustable movable vanes or frequency control or the ordinary nonadjustable fans can be used.

With the aim of evaluating capabilities of a ventilation system with jet fans to control fire smoke in an underground garage, we carried out a set of FDS simulation. According to the results, temperature and soot density of fire has reduced within an acceptable range. We believe that the ventilation system based on the jet fans has indeed controlled fire smoke effectively, thereby we have enough time for safety rescue.

This research is devoted to studying the views of fans of detective and fantasy media products about security in general and about the security subject in particular. It has been suggested that the preference for media products of the fantasy and detective genres contributes to the specification of representations about the security subject. The study was carried out using the semantic differential method with the participation of 400 subjects aged 18 to 22 years. Highlighted significant differences in the structure of ideas about the subject of security among fans of detective fiction and fantasy fans: if from the point of view of the first behavior and actions of the subject security must be based on a realistic assessment of the situation of danger and actualize their own resources, the main qualities of the subject security from the standpoint of the latter are flexibility of thinking, the ability to change behavior, ability to communicate with people, while maintaining the confidentiality of the received information (factor “variability”, “privacy”, “openness”). Common to both groups of subjects are such qualities inherent in the subject of safety as originality of approach to solving a difficult or dangerous situation and energy, activity of actions (factors “novelty” and “activity”). The proposed projective method of evaluating the strategies of the subject’s actions in the conditions of threat, risk and stress expands the diagnostic and predictive capabilities of security psychology.

Hanging is a common method of suicide in several countries. Even as global suicide rates decrease, there is no evidence of suicides by hanging declining. There is limited research by type of hanging, and only a few papers present suicide by hanging from ceiling fans. Our paper proposes a research agenda that will: specify the size of the problem of hanging by ceiling fan (Stage 1: Surveillance), use standard engineering product development processes to modify ceiling fans for reducing their lethal capacity (Stage 2: Design Testing and Redevelopment), and examine the resulting beta- and release-build fans for safety and potential to reduce suicide in community samples (Stage 3: Evaluation).

The article attempts to characterize the legal status of sports fans in Ukraine using the experience of foreign countries. Attention is paid to the historical aspect of the formation of sports fans in the world. The author dwelled on the movement of football fans in the twentieth century. Based on modern research by Ukrainian scientists, a classification of certain categories of football fans is presented. The article argues that sports fans are a kind of challenge to government agencies, and sometimes to society as a whole, so the ability to work with such informal entities, where the composition is dominated by young people, is a key task of government agencies. Examples of fruitful cooperation between the state, local governments and volunteers in the form of fan projects with football fans in Germany and Belgium are given. It was stated that cooperation in Ukraine is still carried out at the level of the football club and fans. The introduction of the position of the Officer for work with football fans in football clubs is positively assessed. The specifics of the Ukrainian fan football movement are pointed out - it is strongly influenced by politics. It is emphasized that in Ukraine, so far, there is no law that would regulate the legal status of sports fans. A number of international agreements, acts of international sports organizations and Ukrainian legislative, by-laws and local regulations are analyzed in the context of clarifying the set of rights and obligations of sports fans (mostly football). It is established that the status of sports fans is determined only within the limits of achieving the goal of ensuring the safety of sports competitions. It is proposed to develop a special law in the future, which would establish the legal status of sports fans and the fan movement in general. Particular attention is paid to the clear wording of the rights of sports fans.

Following the attempted terrorist attack at the friendly match between France and Germany at the Stade de France on November 13, 2015, this article draws on the response of 1,500 association football fans to the threat of terrorism in the world’s most popular sport. Its primary focus was to ask fans to reflect on their own experiences of security and surveillance and what extent the attempted attack on the Stade de France will have on the management of football crowds. Drawing on the themes of surveillance devised by Michel Foucault, the results outline how some fans accept additional measures of security and surveillance as a means of protecting their safety but others resist this as overly excessive and intrusive and argue it negatively affects their match-day experience. The article concludes by reflecting on the management of football crowds given the response by fans and the changes already taking place since November 2015.

Introduction. One of the dominant areas of improvement of motor vehicles is to improve traffic safety. An im-portant aspect of bus safety is visibility from the driver's workplace, which largely depends on the condition of the wind-shield, especially the absence of fogging and frost, which often occurs at low ambient temperatures.Methodically, this problem is eliminated by blowing the windshield with warm air. Structurally, this is done by devices that, in addition to blowing the windshield, also supply warm air to the driver's workplace. Fogging and icing of the windshield significantly impair the visibility of the road driver, which is a great danger in the movement of the bus. Elimination of icing and fogging of windows provides an increase of visibility and guarantee of safety of driving.An important place is also occupied by the problem of reducing heating systems and blowing operating energy costs, improving the fuel economy of buses.Results. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the windshield blowing devices of the bus depending on their design features. As criteria in researches productivity of system blowing, its power consumption and level of noise loading of the driver are accepted.To select a fan with optimal characteristics when used in the device for blowing the windshield of buses and heating the driver's workplace, axial fans were tested. They are using in heating and ventilation systems of buses of different models. It is experimentally established that the fan of the Elko-A200-22 model (Italy) has the best characteris-tics. In the whole range of speed changes, the performance of this fan is much higher compared to other models of the tested fans, which, at the same time, have much higher specific energy consumption. In addition, the fan of this model is characterized by a lower noise level compared to fans of other models with the same outer diameters.Conclusions. Analysis of experimental data shows that the performance of the front heater with two fans and one fan is almost the same. At identical speed modes of operation, the productivity of two fans running in parallel is higher by only 3 ... 16.75%. When measuring the speed of air movement when blowing the windshield, it was found that the speed of blowing does not depend on the number of fans and depends on their performance and the diameter of the air supply hoses to the blowing nozzles.The reason for the lower efficiency of heaters with two fans is that at the outlet after the radiator, in the limited volume of the heater housing, two fans create a much greater aerodynamic drag (back pressure) than one fan.The use of one fan instead of two in the design of bus heaters reduces the electricity consumption of the bus and improves the working conditions of the driver by reducing the noise level at his workplace.

Understanding of molecular events involved in food safety and human health has become a major concern of contemporary life. Mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful tool for characterization of complex food ingredients and biological molecules. Advances in MS-based techniques have offered new opportunities to understand the chemical changes occurring during food storage and processing as well as the molecular events perturbed by either endogenous or exogenous stimulus. In this thesis, we developed novel MS-based approaches for authentication of edible oil (i.e., edible vegetable oil, deep frying oil and gutter oil), assessment of genotoxicity of fatty acid hydroperoxides, and investigation of metabolic deregulation in pleural effusion and tissue of human lung cancer, aiming to gain a better understanding of food safety and human health. MS-based methods were developed for authentication of edible vegetable oil adulterated with used cooking oil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed that six monoglycerides could be used as the markers to discriminate the used cooking oil (e.g., deep frying oil and gutter oil) and qualified edible oil. Accumulation behavior of these six monoglycerides was detected in the repeatedly heated edible oils. Quantitation of the monoglycerides enabled authentication of commercial olive oil adulterated with a small amount of used cooking oil (approximately 1%). In addition, a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) method was developed for visual authentication of edible oil samples, including commercial vegetable oil, used cooking oil and adulterated edible oil. The method provided the capability for quantifying major chemical composition of edible oil, such as triglycerides, diglycerides and monoglycerides. The present method required minimal sample preparation and allowed screening of oil samples with high throughput (approximately 360 samples per day), providing a simple way to authenticate different types of oil samples. Liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) was applied to investigate the genotoxicity of two fatty acid hydroperoxides, i.e., 13-hydroperoxyoctadeca-cis-9,trans-11-dienoic acid (13-HPODE) and 13-hydroperoxy-9,11E,15Z-octadecatrienoic acid (13-HPOTE), which are important inducers of oxidative deterioration in oils and fats generated from the oxidation of linolenic acid and linoleic acid. The results demonstrated that the α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, such as 4-oxo-2-nonenal, dioxo-10-dodecenoic acid, 4-hydroperoxy-2-nonenal and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal are the main degradation compounds of 13-HPODE and 13-HPOTE, which can covalently bound to deoxyribose-nucleosides and ribose-nucleosides to form adducts. This study provided evidences regarding the genotoxicity of fatty acid hydroperoxides at the molecular level. MS-based metabolomics methods were developed and applied for the investigation of metabolic signatures of pleural effusion and tissue of human lung cancer. A database-assisted global metabolomics method was established with utility of LC-Orbitrap MS, followed by automated mass spectral searching. The method enabled unbiased identification of 194 endogenous metabolites in pleural effusions caused by tuberculosis and malignancy. Among which, 33 differential metabolites involved in tryptophan catabolism, bile acid biosynthesis, and β-oxidation of fatty acids were found between tuberculous and malignant pleural effusions, which provided non-invasive biomarkers for diagnosis of pleural effusion samples with high sensitivity and specificity. In addition, a large-scale targeted metabolomics method was developed, which enabled reliable detection of over 400 biological metabolites, covering 92 metabolic pathways in human samples. The method was applied to characterize the metabolic profiles of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues. A number of distant metabolic pathways were found to be differentiated between tumor and normal tissues of lung squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, including purine metabolism, citric acid cycle, amino acid metabolism, urea cycle, and ammonia recycling. In addition, several metabolites, such as adenosine, glutamate, glucose 1,6-bisphosphate, betaine, creatine and methionine sulfoxide were found to be associated with prognosis of NSCLC patients, which might provide potential biomarkers to monitor metabolic characteristics of NSCLC patients and treatment outcomes of the cancer.

Fatal automobile crashes have claimed the lives of over 33,000 people each year in the United States since 1995. As in any point event, fatal crash events do not occur randomly in time or space. The objectives of this study were to identify spatial patterns and hot spots in FARS (Fatal Analysis Reporting System) fatal crash events based on temporal and demographic characteristics. The methods employed included 1) rate calculation using FARS points and average daily traffic flow; 2) planar kernel density estimation of FARS crash events based on temporal and demographic attributes within the data; and 3) two case studies using network kernel density estimation along roadways to determine hot spots fatal crashes in Jefferson County and Warren County. Rate calculation analyses revealed that travel on roads with high speed limits and winding topography led to the highest number of crashes and highest rate of fatal crashesper 1,000 daily vehicles. Planar kernel density estimation results showed temporalpatterns, revealing that ‘hot spots’ and fatalities were highest in the summer, and typically occurred from 2pm-6pm on the weekends. Further, the 16 to 25 year age group was responsible for the most significant ‘hot spots’ and the most fatal accidents. Also showing that the most significant hot spots involving alcohol occurring in close proximity to meeting places such as bars and restaurants. Finally, results from the network kernel density estimation revealed that most hot spots were in high traffic areas of where majorr oads converged with secondary roads.

Ventilation is a critical task in underground mining operation. Lack of a good ventilation system causes accumulation of harmful gases, explosions, and even fatalities. A proper ventilation system provides adequate fresh air to miners for a safe and comfortable working environment. Fans, which provide air flow to different faces of a mine, have great impact in ventilation systems. Thus, selection of appropriate fans for a mine is the acute task. Unsuitable selection of a fan decreases safety and production rate, which increases capital and operational costs. Moreover, pitch angle of fans&rsquo
blades plays an important role in fan&rsquo
s efficiency. Therefore, selection of a fan and its pitch angle, which yields the maximum efficiency, is an emerging issue for an efficient mine ventilation. The main objective of this research study is to provide a decision making methodology for the selection of a main fan and its appropriate pitch angle for efficient mine ventilation. Nowadays, analytical hierarchy process as multi criteria decision making is used, and it yields outputs based on pairwise comparison. On the other hand, Fuzzy Logic as a soft computing method was combined with analytical hierarchy process and combined model did not yield appropriate results
because Fuzzy AHP increased uncertainty ratio in this study. However, fuzzy analytical hierarchy process might be inapplicable when it faces with vague and complex data set. Soft computing methods can be utilized for complicated situations. One of the soft computing methods is a Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm which is used in classification and DM issues. This study has two phases: i) selection of an appropriate fan using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) and ii) selection of an appropriate pitch angle using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm and Fuzzy AHP method. This study showed that AHP can be effectively utilized for main fan selection. It performs better than Fuzzy AHP because FAHP contains more expertise and makes problems more complex for evaluating. When FAHP and Neuro-Fuzzy is compared for pitch angle selection, both methodologies yielded the same results. Therefore, utilization of Neuro-Fuzzy in situation with complicated and vague data will be applicable.

Nos últimos anos, temos assistido a um decréscimo acentuado das assistências médias dos jogos de futebol em Portugal. Tendo por objetivo contribuir para inverter esta tendência, o presente trabalho de projeto desenvolve uma investigação que pretende saber em que medida se pode conciliar a satisfação do adepto nos espetáculos de futebol, relativamente à sua comodidade e bem-estar, e a segurança dos espetáculos de futebol. Neste sentido, este trabalho pretende estimular o debate visando promover um quadro de sustentabilidade do futebol português, para o qual se torna fulcral uma nova mentalidade dos principais dirigentes desportivos, podendo conduzir à proposta de alterações legislativas que levem à adaptação dos estádios a novos modelos de conceção das bancadas e à permissão de práticas pelos espectadores, atualmente proibidas, mantendo a segurança dos adeptos, como é o caso da criação de setores onde seja permitida a permanência de pé ou a relativa ao consumo de cerveja no interior dos mesmos. Na metodologia utilizada para desenvolver o trabalho, privilegiámos a pesquisa por entrevista através de questionário, enviado por correio eletrónico, a quarenta e quatro responsáveis pela segurança dos maiores clubes europeus, com participações relevantes nas competições da UEFA, bem como a outros agentes igualmente envolvidos na segurança dos jogos de futebol, tendo sido rececionadas trinta e quatro respostas provenientes de doze países.
In recent years, we have witnessed a sharp decrease of the average attendance in football matches in Portugal. With the main goal of contributing to reverse this trend, this paper develops a research that aims to determine to what extent one can conciliate the satisfaction of the fan in football spectacles, regarding their comfort and well-being, and the safety and security in football spectacles. In this sense, this paper aims to stimulate a wider discussion to promote a framework of sustainability of Portuguese football, for which becomes crucial new mindset of the leading sports leaders. This debate may lead to proposed legislative changes, which lead to a new model concept of stadiums stands and lead to permission practices by spectators, always keeping the safety of spectators, such as the creation of sectors where it is allowed to remain standing or related with the consumption of beer inside the stadia. The methodology used to develop the investigation, we have privileged the survey by interview using a questionnaire sent by mail, to forty-four persons responsible for the safety and security of the biggest clubs in Europe, with significant participations in UEFA competitions, as well as other agents also involved in safety and security of football games, having been received thirty-four responses from twelve countries.

This study aims to survey the safety status of chemicals in fabs at the Hsinchu Science Industrial Park, trying to establish a complete databases for safety diagnoses. Data from a number of selected fabs at the Hsinchu Science industrial Park were investigated for follow-up tracing and management. Based on the policy of “precaution better than treatment,” this study anticipates all companies under survey at the park to lead a autonomous fab safety management system for a long run. 53 Fabs at the Hsinchu Science Industrial Park, including companies at Jhunan and Longtan sites, were selected as targets for risk assessment and evaluation. Related literatures regarding safety confinements and regulations were also reviewed and surveyed in order to establish the safety advisory sheet and safety evaluation check list for questionnaire survey. Based on sheet and check list, evaluation staff of this study went to Fabs for on-site examination, so as to figure out the problems and present status of safety management in practices. Statistic analyses were carried out after gaining the surveyed results and further classified into four categories, namely chemical storage safety evaluation for gas, liquid, and solid chemical system and general safety; fire-fighting safety evaluation, e.g. fire-fighting systems, environment management evaluation; and general safety and health management evaluation, e.g. vocational health and safety. This study is emphasized on the chemical storage safety. Companies adopting advisory suggestions were verified with more than 80% of improvement ratio, where common safety weaknesses were.analyzed and listed for references of drafting hazard precaution suggestions after taking related local and foreign regulations and standards into account and assisting Park administration to search for potential hazards and their corresponding prevention measures, in an eye to foster hazard prevention, safety management system realization of Park administration, and overall elevation of industrial safety level at the Hsinchu Science Park.

The demand for deep fried chips by public and the number of people entering the fast food industry in the form of fast food outlets has increased tremendously. Frying oils are very expensive and are the most important ingredient used in the preparation of fried foods. Due to high oil costs and lack of knowledge, frying oils are used to their maximum. This has resulted in the abuse of deep fried chip cooking oils. The overall quality of the deep fried chip cooking oil used in the South Central Operational Entity of the eThekwini Municipality is not known but abused cooking oils have been identified by Environmental Health Practitioners (EHP's) during routine inspections of fast food outlets. Considering all of the above, the objectives of the proposed research were: (l) Determine the overall prevalence of the use of abused deep fried chip cooking oils at fast food outlets in the South Central Operational Entity of the eThekwini Municipality. (2) Determine in which supervision areas in the South Central Operational Entity the use of abused cooking oil is most prevalent. (3) Determine current/reported practices in preserving the quality of chip oil. (4) Make appropriate recommendations to owner/managers of the fast food outlets and to Environmental Health Practitioners. The study design was observational utilizing a Rapid Epidemiological Assessment (REA) technique, with both a descriptive and analytical component. All fast food outlets making deep fried chips in the South Central Operational Entity registered with the eThekwini Health Department at the time of the study were included in the study population. The Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) method was used to determine the overall prevalence of the use of abused oil and to determine supervision areas reached the predetermined service target. A total of 100 fast food outlets were sampled. An oil sample from each fast food outlet, which was taken and sent to a laboratory where an Oxifrit Test was done on every oil sample taken. The Oxifrit Test was the benchmark in this study. EHP's of eThekwini Municipality collected further data by means of an observational checklist and a closed-ended questionnaire, which aimed to establish cooking oil preservation practices. The study revealed that 60 of the outlets had oil that was acceptable whereas 40 had oil that was unacceptable (abused oil). In the multivariate analysis the only factors significantly associated with abused oil were the condition of the fryer and frequency of oil change. Supervision Areas 6, and 4 had more abused deep fried chip cooking oil than average in the South Central Operational Entity. For further prioritization, Supervision Areas 6 and 4 fell below the decision rule for majority of acceptable oil preservation practices, thus Supervision Areas 6 and 4 will be targeted for intervention. Intervention will include education, monitoring and ultimately enforcing the law by EHP's to ensure safe use of deep fried chip cooking oil in the South Central Operational Entity within eThekwini Municipality.

The main focus of the chapter is to bring out the extremes—immoderations and intemperance—in sports rivalry by primarily considering the case of Monica Seles' stabbing on court by a crazy Steffi Graf fan in 1993. Rivalries among players eventually extend to fans to bring about diverse dark shades (hostility and violence) among the latter. An outcome of being a part of a fan base is extreme devoutness and fervor towards one's own favorite player while considering partisans of an adversary group as an “outgroup.” Sports rivalries customarily create a safe environment to support the creation of ingroup and outgroup, although in fanatical situations, real fights do break out among rival fans. The chapter shall delve into these aspects and consider a distinct case of extreme fan behavior as an upshot of arch rivalry in sports world. The authors shall further examine the role of different stakeholders in bringing about a healthy playing environment and fostering positive fan behavior that shall bring laurels to the game.

This chapter examines the notion of identification in relation to The Blair Witch Project (1999). One of the primary reasons for the continued use of the found footage aesthetic, popularised in The Blair Witch Project, must be that it increases identification for horror film viewers. These fans of the horror genre search for films that will terrify them. Having a character hold a camera is the closest a spectator can get to living the film, but they get to experience it from the safety of their seat in front of the screen. Considering the positioning of spectators, and exploring the cognitive processes that lead to increased identification, is essential. Is it really as simple as suggesting that, because the cameras are in the hands of the characters, audiences will identify more with them, and therefore be more scared? Many film theorists have considered identification, empathy, and emotion and some have applied their findings to The Blair Witch Project.

Given the high volume of people using today’s public transportation systems, passenger safety has taken on even greater importance in engineering design. This trend has also driven more technical innovation to achieve the same levels of safe ridership using less energy and with reduced cost Jet fens are ideal mechanical systems for emergency ventilation of unidirectional road tunnels; the arched roadway tunnels provide ample space for installation, and this equipment can be operated to transport smoke in the direction of traffic flow — thus enabling stranded motorists to evacuate under clear air in the opposite direction. The application of jet fan systems to multi-directional rail tunnels is not as straightforward, but it can produce significant savings in terms of both energy usage and capital cost, without diminishing passenger safety. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how jet fan systems can be applied to rail tunnel networks as mitigating factors against traditionally large, expensive and high energy-consumption fen facilities. This paper covers the key aspects of jet fan implementation — including spatial allowance, operational modes, high-temperature exposure and economic impacts — through presentation of a sample rail tunnel network and analysis of hypothetical emergency ventilation scenarios.

Motor operated fans (M/O fans) of safety related ventilation systems in nuclear power plant facilities are required to maintain operability following earthquakes. M/O fans are designed to qualify the validated response capacity ranged from 2.3×9.8m/s2 to 2.6×9.8m/s2 at the bearing bracket depending on the type of fan in accordance with “JEAC4601-2008” [1] in Japan. Since the Regulatory Guide for Reviewing Seismic Design of Nuclear Power Reactor Facilities (Seismic Guide) revised in September 2006 [2] prescribes that the facilities in class S shall maintain their safety functions under seismic forces caused by a Design Basis Earthquake Ground Motion (DBEGM) Ss, a reevaluation is required for the seismic capacity of M/O fans to ensure operability. Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES) performed a series of seismic capacity tests for specimens of actual M/O fans, including a centrifugal fan with coupling and an axial fan without coupling. A program for a vibration test was developed to ensure its safety-related function to operate following earthquakes and to maintain the design flow rate and the design pressure. The tests were carried out by a shake table up to the response acceleration 7.5×9.8m/s2 at the bearing bracket in horizontal directions, and 3.0×9.8m/s2 in the vertical direction individually. As a result of the tests, the operability was qualified for each type of fan up to the above target acceleration values excluding a few exceptions. As a failure mode of the M/O centrifugal fan with coupling, the labyrinth seal was identified to be vulnerable to wear. The obtained data of seismic capacity are expected to be applied for the seismic reevaluation of M/O fans.

Abstract Facing the growing traffic fleet in the cities nowadays, it is believed that three-dimensional urban transportation could be a solution and will be introduced in the near future. Vertical take-off and landing flying platforms powered by ducted fans will attract increasingly attention because it has advantages on high propulsion efficiency, low noise, and better safety. However, unlike traditional open-blade multi-rotor drones, ducted fan drones lack a systematic design approach that comprehensively considers the overall system performance and the power unit efficiency. Current design procedure leads to insufficient load capacity and low efficiency systems. This paper proposes an overall design method for a ducted fan-type vertical take-off and landing flight platform. The ducted fan and motor of the core power unit are designed and selected aiming at improving aerodynamic efficiency and structural utilization of the system. A heavy-load vertical take-off and landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) powered by ducted fans with a take-off weight of 450kg is designed based on this method. CFD simulation is utilized to calculate the performance of the designed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, and finite element analysis is carried out to examine the overall strength safety. The final design results show that the overall design method plays a great role in the development of ducted fan UAV.

High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (HTGR) has inherent safety, and has been selected as one of the candidates for the Gen-IV nuclear energy system. In china, the project of the High Temperature Reactor Pebble bed Module (HTR-PM) is in design and construction process. Spherical fuel elements are chosen for the HTR-PM and the spent fuel elements will be stored in canister. The spent fuel canister will be delivered to wells for storage when fully loaded. The canister is covered by a steel cask for radiation shielding, and the cask is covered by a boron polyethylene sleeve to absorb neutrons from decay in fuel loading process. Normally, the residual heat is discharged by forced ventilation in fuel loading process. An auxiliary fan is set on top of the cask considering the possible mechanical failure for the operating fan. When losing normal power supply, the emergency power will be provided to the fans by the two line diesel generators respectively. In extreme conditions of mechanical failure for both fans, the residual heat could be discharged by natural ventilation. The temperature profiles of the different structures were studied in this paper with CFD method for both normal and accident conditions. The calculation results showed that, the maximum temperature of all of the structures are lower than the safety temperature limits in either normal or accident conditions; the temperature decreases rapidly with radial distance in the canister, and the maximum temperature is located at the center of the fuel pebble bed. So it is feasible to remove the residual heat of the spent fuel by natural ventilation in accident condition, and in the natural ventilation condition, the maximum temperature of the spent fuel, the canister shell, the shielding cask, and the boron polyethylene sleeve are lower than their safety temperature limits.

Crowd noise levels in large stadiums are often discussed in the press and by the casual stadium patron; however, there has been little scientific evaluation of these levels and their corresponding effects. An effort was undertaken at Penn State University to measure noise on the field at Beaver Stadium (State College, PA: capacity 107,282) during a PSU football game. The two-fold purpose of these measurements was to evaluate the noise levels with respect to how they affect the game and make real-time, calibrated recordings for future use in the football team’s indoor practice facility. Measurements were taken on the field level using sound levels meters and DAT recorders throughout the PSU vs. Ohio State University football game on 27 October 2007. As a point of comparison, similar measurements were conducted by a team of researchers from Virginia Tech during the VT vs. University of Miami game on 17 November 2007 at Lane Stadium (Blacksburg, VA: capacity 66,233). The crowd noise levels are compared between the two stadiums taking into account the circumstances of the two games, time of day, and design of the stadiums. The levels on the field are evaluated in terms of speech intelligibility, i.e. the ability of the players to communicate with each other. In addition, a hearing loss safety assessment for both fans and players is presented.

Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) is a firefighting tactic that can mitigate the spread of fire and the combustion products to improve the safety of firefighters and civilians in wind-driven high-rise fires than without PPV. The performance of a PPV tactic in wind-driven high-rise fires depends on various parameters that include wind speed, control of stairwell doors, number of fans, fan positions and placements, fire location etc. This paper describes the influence of these parameters on the efficacy of PPV operation that was studied by simulating wind-driven high-rise fire scenarios using computational fluid dynamics softwares Fluent 12.0 and NIST’s Fire dynamic simulator (FDS 5.0). The results obtained from Fluent and FDS found to be in close agreement with each other and have been used to optimize the PPV operation for better performance.

For redundancy, almost all mission-critical facilities such as data centers are fitted with more air condition units than required. These units are most of the time heavily underutilized, where the fans within the units are still consuming energy circulating air without actually providing cooling. In more modern facilities such fans are equipped with variable frequency drives, which can reduce substantially the energy consumption if proper controls are implemented. While there have several solutions for controlling and optimizing such variable frequency drive operated air conditioning units, control systems without variable frequency drives (discrete on/off ACU controls) have not been addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we present a practical, distributed and automatic control method for such discrete air conditioning units. The technique includes several safety features and is based on dense environmental sensing and events like hotspots or device failures. We discuss this approach by way of example of a case study.

There is a continued tragic loss of firefighter and civilian lives, as shown by fire statistics. One significant contributing factor is the lack of understanding of fire behavior in residential structures resulting from the use of ventilation as a firefighter practice on the fire ground. The changing dynamics of residential fires as a result of the changes in home construction materials, contents, size and geometry over the past 30 years compounds our lack of understanding of the effects of ventilation on fire behavior. Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) fans were introduced as a technology to increase firefighter safety by controlling the ventilation. However, adequate scientific data is not available for PPV to be used without increasing the risk to firefighters. This fire research report details the experimental data from cold flow experiments, fuel load characterization experiments and full scale fire experiments. During the project it was identified that the positive pressure attack (PPA) and positive pressure ventilation (PPV) were often used interchangeably. For the purpose of this report they have been defined as PPA for when the fan is utilized prior to fire control and PPV for when the fan is used post fire control. The information from the full scale tests was reviewed with assistance from our technical panel of fire service experts to develop tactical considerations for the use of PPV fans in residential single family structures.

Review question / Objective: As a common type of clinical dementia, the prevalence rate of vascular dementia(VaD) increased rapidly in recent years, damaging both patients’ health and social-economic prospect. There is currently no effective treatment for VaD, though western medicines can slightly improve patients' cognitive function, but not brought a significant improvement in daily life ability. Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) has been widely employed to treat dementia for more than 2000 years in China. Despite the proliferation of relevant literature, there is still a lack of evidence to prove the effectiveness and safety of such therapy. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CHM forVaD. Information sources: 6 English databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Springer, CENTRAL and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform) and 4 Chinese databases (Wan fang Database, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database).

Review question / Objective: By 3 to 4 months of age, infants can keep their necks upright and look into both eyes horizontally. But infants with CMT have a wry neck also known as a twisted neck. Complementary therapies have been commonly used to treat CMT, such as tuina, acupuncture, herbal medicine. Among them, external application of herbal medicine is non-surgical and non-invasive inventions so it can be used widely in East Asia. This review aims to evaluate any form of external application of herbal medicines in CMT, such as cream, oil, extract, form of patch, etc. Information sources: We will electronically search the following database 4 English databases(MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), 3 Chinese databases(China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journal Database(VIP), Wan Fang Database), 4 Korean medical databases(Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System(OASIS), Korean Studies Information Service System(KISS), National Digital Science Links(NDSL), Research Information Sharing Service(RISS)) from their founding date to June 2022, without any language restrictions.

Review question / Objective: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypoventilation syndrome (OSAHS) suffer from repeated hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and sleep structure disorders at night, leading to daytime lethargy and complications of heart, brain, lung, and blood vessel damage, which seriously affect their quality of life and life span. Clinical studies have shown that auricular point pressing therapy has an excellent therapeutic effect on OSAHS, and has the potential to be a complementary and alternative therapy for patients with OSAHS. Currently, systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture for the treatment of OSAHS are lacking. This study aimed to address this deficiency. Information sources: RCTs of auricular point pressing therapy in the treatment of OSAHS were searched in the Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wan-Fang Database. As the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, there was a lack of information in Arabic about COVID-19 and family planning and reproductive health. To fill this gap, the Evidence Project curated frequently asked questions about COVID-19 and FP/RH and developed responses to these questions to reach an Arabic-speaking audience. The topics covered include general COVID-19 infection prevention and management, safety of using FP methods during the pandemic, and safe motherhood. These FAQs were developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), and the MoHP will share them with the general public in Egypt.
