Анотація:

This study examines the relationship of auditor tenure and audit quality in four European countries, namely Germany, France, Italy and Spain, with the innovative GMM (Generalized Methods of Moments) model during the period from 2005 to 2013.Two GMM methods are used with two alternative definitions of crisis – the main and the robustness method. The results agree regardless of the fact that some of the control variables are excluded in the robustness test.The results support the finding that in Spain, there is an impact of auditors’ long-term tenure on discretionary accruals, affecting auditors’ quality and independence indirectly. In addition, the crisis affected Germany and France as far as the change in negative and positive values of GDP is concerned. In this respect, the crisis affected the above two countries when the years before and after the crisis are considered as a robustness check. The results contain important implications for accountant regulators and policy makers.

Strategy reporting is of high interest to investors and can be seen as decision-useful information. The focus of this study is to analyze the determinants of the quality of voluntary strategy disclosure in German management reports of capital market-oriented companies. Based on a theoretical analysis, hypotheses are formulated to investigate the determinants of the quality of voluntary strategy disclosure. In order to test the hypotheses, a number of statistical tests are performed, especially multiple regression analyses. It is based on a unique hand-collected dataset with a self-constructed scoring model, which measures the quality of voluntary strategy disclosure. The sample comprises 110 largest companies in Germany for the period between 2014 and 2018. The results indicate that firm size, firm growth and capital intensity determine voluntary strategy disclosure significantly and positively. Conversely, firm age, financial leverage, ownership structure and profitability do not have a significant relationship with voluntary strategy disclosure. The results are robust to different statistical analysis. This research provides insights into a neglected topic in academia and helps decision-makers in practice and regulators to better understand voluntary strategy disclosure of capital market-oriented companies.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to devise and test a model of halal logistic service quality.Design/methodology/approachTo develop the halal logistics service quality model, the relevant literature was reviewed and a qualitative study was carried out on halal logistics service providers and their customers. A survey of 253 halal food and beverage firms in Malaysia was conducted, and based on the results, a model was developed and tested empirically.FindingsBased on the literature review, interviews, pretest and empirical study, a valid and reliable measurement instrument for halal logistics service quality was developed.Practical implicationsThe findings can help managers of halal logistics service providers to understand the criteria that halal food and beverage firms are considered to judge the quality of halal logistics services.Originality/valueThis study makes a valuable contribution by proposing a halal logistics service quality model.

The paper aims to investigate the impact of CAMEL components on the financial performance of commercial banks in Vietnam. Three econometric models are built using four CAMEL’s crucial indicators as independent variables (capital adequacy, asset quality, management effectiveness, bank liquidity) and return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and net interest margin (NIM) as proxies for commercial banks’ financial performance – dependent variables. The research sample includes 31 Vietnamese commercial banks over the 6-year period, from 2013 to 2018. The results show a better fit of the fixed effects model (FEM) in terms of the research methodology compared to the ordinary least squares (OLS) and random effects model (REM). It was found that capital adequacy, asset quality, liquidity and management efficiency affect the performance of Vietnamese commercial banks. Bilateral, product-level data exhibit a number of strong patterns that can be used to evaluate international trade theories, notably the spatial incidence of “export zeros” (correlated with distance and importer size), and of export unit values (positively related to distance). We show that leading theoretical trade models fail to explain at least some of these facts, and propose a variant of the Melitz model that can account for all the facts. In our model, high quality firms are the most competitive, with heterogeneous quality increasing with firms' heterogeneous cost. (JEL F11, F14, F40)

Nurses are expected to perform evidence-based practice (EBP) at the point of care (POC) to promote positive outcomes through the quality and safety of patient care. The struggle for nurses on the surgical digestive unit in a hospital to adopt EBP is the lack of access and knowledge to evidence-based research at the POC. The utilization of information technology is an innovated approach to providing access and knowledge for EBP at the POC to improve patient outcomes. The project was to develop a quality improvement program to improve nursing access and knowledge of EBP resources. The program was to identify the type of e-nursing resources and necessary education to provide nurses access to evidence-based resources and the knowledge to utilize these resources in nursing practice. The purpose of the doctoral project was set to identify necessary resources to develop an evidence-based program for staff nurses to access evidence-based resources and improve nursing knowledge on EBP at the POC. The use of the Stevens's star model of knowledge transformation was the framework for the project, and use of the logic model guided the structure for program evaluation. The quantitative project used a 1 group pre- and post-survey design using a convenience sample (n =10). A final statistical analysis to determine effectiveness of the educational intervention was inconclusive. Quantitative descriptive data from pre- and post-survey results were used to summarize recommendations for the future development of an EBP quality improvement project with the use of information technology tools. The further dissemination of the findings could promote new methods to implement quality improvement programs to improve the quality and safety of patient care to promote positive health outcomes.

In 2011 the University of Kentucky opened the first two inpatient floors of its new hospital. With an estimated cost of over $872 million, the new facility represents a major investment in the future of healthcare in Kentucky. This facility is outfitted with many features that were not present in the old hospital, with the expectation that they would improve the quality and efficiency of patient care. After one year of occupancy, hospital administration questioned the effectiveness of some features. Through focus groups of key stakeholders, surveys of frontline staff, and direct observational data, this dissertation evaluates the effectiveness of two such features, namely the ceiling-based patient lifts and the placement of large team meeting spaces on every unit, while also describing methods that can improve the overall state of quality improvement research in healthcare.

Background: To date, little attention has focused on what the factors are and how Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) are sustained in acute care over time. Problem: For ten years, a multi-site acute care center supported the use of a Pain Assessment and Management Policy and Protocol (Pain P/P), placing the decision to use it with point of care nurses. Despite early implementation success, the nursing department identified an evidence-based gap on Medicine care units. Purpose: To (i) identify factors influencing nurses’ use (or not) of the Pain P/P over time, and ten years post-implementation; (ii) examine related knowledge translation interventions (KTIs) used over time, and ten years post-implementation; (iii) validate unit nurses’ use of the Pain P/P ten years post-implementation; and (iv) identify relevant sustainability frameworks/models/theories (F/M/Ts), constructs and factors for sustained use of BPGs in acute care. Methodology: A case study of an organization-wide nursing BPG was conducted ten years following initial implementation using mixed methods guided by the Dynamic Sustainability Framework (Chambers, 2013). The case study setting was a 1122 bed acute care center in Canada. I examined BPG sustainability at the (corporate) department and unit levels (two embedded subcases). Data sources included 19 informant interviews (3-corporate, 16-unit level), 200 chart audits (100/subcase), and 29 documents. I concurrently conducted a systematic review to identify sustainability concepts and factors for use in acute care to compare case study results. Results: I identified 7 constructs, 49 factors, and 29 KTIs influencing sustained use of evidence-base practices (EBPs) in acute care. Three factors and eight KTIs had a continuous influence during implementation and sustained use phases. Findings confirm the concept of sustainability is a dynamic ‘process’ or ‘ongoing phase’. Conclusions: This thesis provides a novel resource to support future practice and research aimed at sustaining EBPs to improve nursing practice and related patient outcomes. Attention to the level of application and changing conditions over time impacting factors that influence EBP use is required for sustainment. Use of a participatory approach to engage users in designing remedial plans and link KTIs to target behaviors that incrementally address low adherence rates promotes sustainability.

O objetivo deste estudo é investigar o impacto da qualidade dos resultados na eficiência de investimento em empresas Europeias, cotadas e não cotadas. A amostra, retirada da base de dados Amadeus, é composta por 6921 empresas de 19 países. A eficiência do investimento é baseada no modelo de oportunidades crescentes de Biddle et al. (2009), expandido por literatura subsequente, e a qualidade dos resultados é medida usando o modelo de Dechow e Dichev modificado por McNichols (2002). Os resultados obtidos são significativos, e mostram que uma maior qualidade dos resultados está relacionada com uma maior eficiência de investimento, medida pelos desvios do nível ótimo. Estes resultados verificam-se quer considerando o valor absoluto destes desvios, quer considerando os cenários de subinvestimento (desvios negativos) ou sobreinvestimento (desvios positivos). O efeito do nível de caixa e endividamento foi igualmente considerado nesta relação, observando-se uma influência significativa.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of earnings quality on investment efficiency in European listed and unlisted companies. The sample, collected from Amadeus database, is composed by 6921 companies from 19 countries. The investment efficiency measure is based on Biddle et al. (2009) growth opportunities model and subsequent research, and earnings quality is measured using Dechow and Dichev (2002) model modified by McNichols (2002). Results show that higher earnings quality is associated with higher investment efficiency, measured by the deviations from the optimal investment level. These results hold for both underinvestment (negative deviations) and overinvestment (positive deviations) scenarios. Results also suggest that cash and leverage levels play an important role on the relation between earnings quality and investment efficiency.

Cette thèse se compose de trois chapitres ayant en commun la question de la qualité des exportations dans un contexte de pays en voie de développement. La thèse s’intéresse plus particulièrement à différents aspects permettant d’améliorer le niveau de qualité des exportations. Le premier chapitre est consacré à l'impact de l'Aide au commerce (Aid for trade) sur la qualité des exportations des pays récipiendaires. Il suggère un effet positif de la politique d'aide au commerce sur la qualité des exportations. Le deuxième chapitre porte sur le rôle de vérification de la qualité joué par les intermédiaires dans le commerce international. Les résultats indiquent que seuls les intermédiaires spécialisés jouent ce rôle. Le troisième chapitre examine le lien entre l'orientation à l'exportation des entreprises et leur performance en matière d'innovation. L’analyse empirique met en évidence une réduction des investissements en R&D chez les exportateurs dont les ventes s’orientent principalement vers les exportations au détriment du marché intérieur et ce d’autant plus qu’ils font face à une incertitude élevée de la demande. Ces évolutions défavorables pourraient être surmontées néanmoins si l’entreprise a une riche expérience commerciale ou une productivité élevée. Les trois résultats principaux de cette thèse sont ainsi que l'aide au commerce ainsi que l’essor d’intermédiaires de type spécialisé contribuent à la montée en qualité des exportateurs tandis que l'incertitude de la demande extérieure tend à l’inverse à entraver l’innovation des firmes exportatrices
This thesis is composed of three chapters that have in common the question of export quality in a developing country context. The thesis focuses on different aspects of improving the quality level of exports. The first chapter is devoted to the impact of Aid for Trade on the quality of exports from recipient countries. It suggests a positive effect of Aid for Trade policy on the quality of exports. The second chapter focuses on the quality assurance role played by intermediaries in international trade. The results indicate that only specialized intermediaries play this role. The third chapter examines the link between firms' export orientation and their innovation performance. The empirical analysis shows a reduction in R&D investment by exporters whose sales reorient towards exports to the detriment of the domestic market, especially as they face high demand uncertainty. These unfavourable developments could nevertheless be overcome if the company has a long trade experience or high productivity. The three main results of this thesis are that aid for trade and the rise of specialized intermediaries contribute to the rise in quality of exporters, while the uncertainty of external demand tends, on the other hand, to hinder innovation by exporting firms

AbstractEquity and quality are the common goals to strive for in the Nordic education systems. Yet the mechanisms through which the separate education systems approach these goals have become more diverse. The chapter provides evidence in support of the different facets of teacher quality, such as self-efficacy, as well as teacher-students relations concerning their importance for teachers’ job satisfaction across the Nordic countries. Diversities, however, were also observed. The results from the TALIS 2013 model outlined two subgroups of the Nordic countries with similar mechanisms: the Norway-Sweden and the Denmark-Finland groups. No distinctive group was found in the TALIS 2018 results, producing more country-specific patterns, such as the importance of social utility value for Norway, adverse classroom composition in Sweden or teacher effective professional development positively impacting the personal and social utility values of teachers in Finland. These observed diversities and changing patterns may find their reasons in the gradually dissolved unity of the Nordic model by the different reform actions taken in recent years, such as in the example of Sweden, and in the long-term prerequisites for the teaching profession, where Finland is the country that stands out.

AbstractIn this contribution, we will mobilize the interdisciplinary life course paradigm to consider the processes through which individual heterogeneity in health and wealth is constructed all along life, from the cradle to old age. Considering altogether historical, family and individual times, the life course perspective has been developed in sociology, (lifespan) psychology and epidemiology, and has framed many important studies during the last four decades. The theory of cumulative disadvantage is for sure the most popular in social sciences, explaining how little inter-individual differences early in life expand all along life to reach maximal amplitude among the “young old” (before the selection by differential mortality at very old age). In lifespan psychology, the theory of cognitive reserve (educational level being a proxy) and its continuation, the theory of use or disuse (of cognition during adult life) have more or less the same explanatory power, cognition being a decisive precondition for active ageing and quality of life in old age. However, in spite of the success of those theoretical bodies, a prominent figure in the field, Glen Elder, recently observed that there is surprisingly little evidence for cumulative processes and that a wide variety of model specifications remain completely untested. This finding makes even more important a critical review of the literature which summarize several robust evidences, but also discuss contradictory results and suggest promising research tracks. This exercise considers the life course construction of inequalities in the distribution of objective resources older adults have (or not) “to live the life they own value” (to quote A. Sen 2001). But it is also crucial to consider the subjective component that is inherent to the understanding of well-being.

AbstractIn their daily practice, physicians with different professional backgrounds often diagnose a patient’s problem collaboratively. In those situations, physicians not only need to be able to diagnose individually, but also need additional collaborative competences such as information sharing and negotiation skills (Liu et al., 2015), which can influence the quality of the diagnostic outcome (Tschan et al., 2009). We introduce the CDR model, a process model for collaborative diagnostic reasoning processes by diagnosticians with different knowledge backgrounds. Building on this model, we develop a simulation in order to assess and facilitate collaborative diagnostic competences among advanced medical students. In the document-based simulation, learners sequentially diagnose five patients by inspecting a health record for symptoms. Then, learners request a radiological diagnostic procedure from a simulated radiologist. By interacting with the simulated radiologist, the learners elicit more evidence for their hypotheses. Finally, learners are asked to integrate all information and suggest a final diagnosis.

AbstractPrediction models have the potential to positively influence clinical decision-making and thus the overall quality of healthcare. The translational gap needs to be bridged between development of complex statistical models requiring multiple predictors and widespread usage in clinical consultation. A recent review found that inadequate quality of reporting of prediction modelling studies could be a contributing factor in slow transition to the clinic. This chapter emphasises the importance of high-quality reporting of modelling studies and the need for critical appraisal to understand the potential issues limiting generalizability of published models. Evidence synthesis (such as systematic reviews and pooled analysis of disparate models) are relatively under-represented in literature, though methodological studies and guidelines are now starting to appear.

AbstractThe Gothenburg model of Person-Centred Care (PCC) is an evidence-based intervention shown to improve care and health outcomes while maintaining cost. Other health systems could benefit from its sustainable implementation. The WE-CARE implementation framework, adapted by COSTCares, provides a base set of enablers and outcomes recommended for the design and evaluation of PCC. The methodology is extended using implementation science to systematically address contextual factors at different levels. Evidence-based frameworks, such as the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), for example, and hybrid effectiveness-implementation study designs can be used. Additional enablers to consider when designing and evaluating PCC implementation strategies are discussed. The outcomes of quality of care and cost can be addressed using a Value for Money (VfM) framework. Various VfM methods and analysis models can be incorporated into PCC implementation research design in order to influence policy makers and health system decision makers towards the sustainable uptake of PCC.

Transportation accidents frequently involve liquids dispersing in the atmosphere. An example is that of aircraft impacts, which often result in spreading fuel and a subsequent fire. Predicting the resulting environment is of interest for design, safety, and forensic applications. This environment is challenging for many reasons, one among them being the disparate time and length scales that are necessary to resolve for an accurate physical representation of the problem. A recent computational method appropriate for this class of problems has been described for modeling the impact and subsequent liquid spread. Because the environment is difficult to instrument and costly to test, the existing validation data are of limited scope and quality. A comparatively well instrumented test involving a rocket propelled cylindrical tank of water was performed, the results of which are helpful to understand the adequacy of the modeling methods. Existing data include estimates of drop sizes at several locations, final liquid surface deposition mass integrated over surface area regions, and video evidence of liquid cloud spread distances. Comparisons are drawn between the experimental observations and the predicted results of the modeling methods to provide evidence regarding the accuracy of the methods.

The disease detection is vital to increase the productivity and quality of soybean cultivation and this detection is usually carried out in a laboratory, which is time consuming and costly. To overcome these issues, there is a growing demand for technologies that aim at a faster detection and classification of diseases. In this context, this work proposes the extraction of several patches from a leaf image and combining a convolutional neural network with a support vector machine, we present a complete model for the classification of soybean leaf diseases. In this approach, an image dataset with evidence of diseases commonly observed in soybean crops was analyzed and our experiments achieved precisions greater than 90%.

ABSTRACT Background: A cancer diagnosis and its treatment can be expensive. So that cancer patients may suffer from mental and physical problems. Quality of life (QOL) is a major concern of patients with terminal cancer. This study aimed to investigate the biopsychosocial determinants of quality of life in patients with breast cancer. Subjects and Method: This was a cross sectional study. A sample of 200 patients with breast cancer was selected by a simple random sampling. The dependent variable was quality of life. The independent variables were age, marital status, stage of cancer, chemotherapy, length of disease, coping strategy, family income, and modal social. Quality of life was measured by WHO-QOL-BREF. The other variables were collected by a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by a multiple logistic regression run on Stata 13. Results: Strong modal social (b= 2.52; 95% CI= 0.82 to 4.22; p= 0.003), complete chemotherapy (b= 1.65; 95% CI= -0.05 to 3.35; p= 0.057), length of diagnosis ≥24 months (b= 2.39; 95% CI= 0.69 to 4.22; p= 0.006), family income ≥Rp 5,600,000 (b= 2.94; 95% CI= 1.24 to 4.64; p= 0.001), and good coping strategy (b= 1.70; 95% CI= 0.11 to 3.29; p= 0.036) increased quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Late stage of cancer (b= -2.09; 95% CI= -3.78 to -0.40; p= 0.015) and depression (b= -2.48; 95% CI= -4.26 to -0.69; p= 0.001) decreased quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Age decreased quality of life (b= -0.87; 95% CI= -2.94 to 2.77; p= 0.952), but it was statistically non-significant. Marital status increased quality of life (b= 1.32; 95% CI= -0.35 to 2.99; p= 0.123), but it was statistically non-significant. Conclusion: Strong modal social, complete chemotherapy, length of diagnosis ≥24 months, family income ≥Rp 5,600,000, and good coping strategy increase quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Late stage of cancer and depression decrease quality of life of patients with breast cancer. Age decreases quality of life, but it is statistically non-significant. Designed as household-based assessments, citizen-led assessments (CLAs) are implemented by local organizations who assess children in their homes, thus reaching the most marginalized children, families, and communities, often in remote areas. CLAs add an essential piece of information for truly monitoring progress and help realistically represent the learning levels of all children – at national, regional, and global levels. By using simple tools and easy-to-understand reports, CLAs engage parents and community members in discussions about learning and help foster understanding of the importance of ensuring quality education through civil action. In this publication, members from organizations conducting CLAs in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh provide an overview of the CLA model and illustrate a range of ways in which the model has been implemented in the four South Asian countries to monitor and improve learning. In all four countries, the initiative is known as the Annual Status of Education Report, or ASER – a word that means ‘impact’ in three of these four countries. By design, ASER assesses foundational reading and numeracy skills.

Background : Banana being a monocot and having distinct peel and pulp tissues is unique among the fleshy fruits and hence can provide a more comprehensive understanding of fruit ripening. Our previous research which translated ripening discoveries from tomato, led to the identification of six banana fruit-associated MADS-box genes, and we confirmed the positive role of MaMADS1/2 in banana ripening. The overall goal was to further elucidate the banana ripening signaling pathway as mediated by MADS-boxtranscriptional regulators. Specific objectives were: 1) characterize transcriptional profiles and quality of MaMADS1/2 repressed fruit; 2) reveal the role of additional MaMADSgenes in ripening; 3) develop a model of fruit MaMADS-box mode of action; and 4) isolate new components of the banana ripening signaling pathway. Major conclusion: The functions of the banana MaMADS1-5 have been examined by complimenting the rinor the TAGL1-suppressed lines of tomato. Only MaMADS5 exhibited partial complementation of TAGL1-suppressed and rinlines, suggesting that while similar genes play corresponding roles in ripening, evolutionary divergence makes heterologous complementation studies challenging. Nevertheless, the partial complementation of tomato TAGL1-surpessed and rinlines with MaMADS5 suggests this gene is likely an important ripening regulator in banana, worthy of further study. RNA-seqtranscriptome analysis during ripening was performed on WT and MaMADS2-suppressed lines revealing additional candidate genes contributing to ripening control mechanisms. In summary, we discovered 39 MaMADS-box genes in addition to homologues of CNR, NOR and HB-1 expressed in banana fruits, and which were shown in tomato to play necessary roles in ripening. For most of these genes the expression in peel and pulp was similar. However, a number of key genes were differentially expressed between these tissues indicating that the regulatory components which are active in peel and pulp include both common and tissue-specific regulatory systems, a distinction as compared to the more uniform tomato fruit pericarp. Because plant hormones are well documented to affect fruit ripening, the expressions of genes within the auxin, gibberellin, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, salicylic and ethylene signal transduction and synthesis pathways were targeted in our transcriptome analysis. Genes’ expression associated with these pathways generally declined during normal ripening in both peel and pulp, excluding cytokinin and ethylene, and this decline was delayed in MaMADS2-suppressed banana lines. Hence, we suggest that normal MaMADS2 activity promotes the observed downward expression within these non-ethylene pathways (especially in the pulp), thus enabling ripening progression. In contrast, the expressions of ACSand ACOof the ethylene biosynthesis pathway increase in peel and pulp during ripening and are delayed/inhibited in the transgenic bananas, explaining the reduced ethylene production of MaMADS2-suppressed lines. Inferred by the different genes’ expression in peel and pulp of the gibberellins, salicylic acid and cytokinins pathways, it is suggested that hormonal regulation in these tissues is diverse. These results provide important insights into possible avenues of ripening control in the diverse fruit tissues of banana which was not previously revealed in other ripening systems. As such, our transcriptome analysis of WT and ripening delayed banana mutants provides a starting point for further characterization of ripening. In this study we also developed novel evidence that the cytoskeleton may have a positive role in ripening as components of this pathway were down-regulated by MaMADS2 suppression. The mode of cytoskeleton involvement in fruit ripening remains unclear but presents a novel new frontier in ripening investigations. In summary, this project yielded functional understanding of the role and mode of action of MaMADS2 during ripening, pointing to both induction of ethylene and suppression of non-ethylene hormonal singling pathways. Furthermore, our data suggest important roles for cytoskeleton components and MaMADS5 in the overall banana ripening control network. Implications: The project revealed new molecular components/genes involved in banana ripening and refines our understanding of ripening responses in the peel and pulp tissues of this important species. This information is novel as compared to that derived from the more uniform carpel tissues of other highly studied ripening systems including tomato and grape. The work provides specific target genes for potential modification through genetic engineering or for exploration of useful genetic diversity in traditional breeding. The results from the project might point toward improved methods or new treatments to improve banana fruit storage and quality.
