This article analyzes the structure of scientific knowledge in the Early Modern period with reference to the place of "arts" in the Academy of Arts and Sciences, established by a nominal decree from the Senate on January 28 (February 8), 1724 in St. Petersburg, and the place of the latter in the pan-European network of academic communities. The study aims to show the relevance and innovativeness of the Russian academic project, both due to specific Russian conditions and the peculiarities of the structure of scientific knowledge of the Early Modern period. Based on 1) the common and the different between the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and the leading European academies, 2) peculiarities of the phrase "arts and sciences" in the context of Petrine times, the thesis is substantiated that the Art Chambers and craft workshops at the Academy did not just "serve" the needs of science and carry out "side" work that had nothing to do with "pure science". The arts were themselves instruments of "fact production" in and for science, inseparable from its process. At the time of the establishment of the Academy, there could be no sciences without art, just as there could be no arts without sciences. The presence of the phrase "arts and sciences" in the name of the Academy is well explained by the semantics of the word "art", which included sciences, arts, and crafts.

Introduction. In the second half of the 1760s – the first half of the 1770s Ivan I. Betskoy implemented a far-reaching reform of Russian education. It appeared that the problems of two Russian universities had not been the key issues of the reform. Apparently, that was the reason why they were not previously considered as a part of the systemic all-European crisis in higher education, which had been caused by a need to secularize universities and inculcate national languages into them, as well as by the general development of sciences, especially physical and cameral ones. Methods and materials. The article for the first time analyzes the model of the Academy’s College created at the Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1770 to replace the Academy’s university that had ceased to exist in 1767. Based on the “Privileges and Statute of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences” (1770), the research proves that this document compiled by Vladimir G. Orlov was brought into action without any legislative approval. Analysis. According to the Orlov’s Statute, Academy’s College appeared at the Academy to reproduce scientists who represented science, but not liberal arts which coincided with the new trend of the Academy of Sciences. It was arranged according to the model common to all education institutions reformed under Ivan I. Betskoy. After completing the main course of study, students were renamed as élèves and assigned to particular academicians for the improvement in science. At the same time, they attended public science courses, which corresponded to the university program in science and since then were allowed to read not only in Latin and Russian (as in the Statute of 1747), but also in new European languages. Results. Hence, an alternative model of training scientific personnel, which meant a higher educational level, was created at the Academy of Sciences.

Prezes Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności Kazimierz Nitsch a Petersburska Akademia Nauk (w świetle zbiorów archiwalnych) Kontakty Kazimierza Nitscha (1874–1958) – krakowskiego lingwisty, profesora Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, członka i prezesa Polskiej Akademii Umiejętności – z Petersburską Akademią Nauk rozpoczęły się jeszcze przed wyborem polskiego naukowca do jej grona. Świadectwa tych kontaktów można odnaleźć w zbiorach Petersburskiej Filii Archiwum Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk, Archiwum Nauki PAN i PAU w Krakowie oraz Archiwum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Wyprawy dialektologiczne to jeden z obszarów wcześniejszej współpracy K. Nitscha z Petersburską Akademią. Pozostałe obszary znajdują odzwierciedlenie w korespondencji prowadzonej przez K. Nitscha z Aleksiejem A. Szachmatowem (1864–1920), prezesem Wydziału Języka Rosyjskiego i Literatury oraz Borysem M. Lapunowem (1862–1943), rosyjskim slawistą, członkiem Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk, który po śmierci A. A. Szachmatowa i E. F. Karskiego (1860–1931), drugiego wybitnego slawisty i organizatora nauki, został kluczową postacią łączącą rosyjski i europejski świat slawistyczny. W Petersburskiej Filii Archiwum Rosyjskiej Akademii Nauk zachowały się listy K. Nitscha do A. A. Szachmatowa z lat 1909–1914 i do B. M. Lapunowa z lat 1930–1936; w Archiwum Nauki PAN i PAU w Krakowie znajdują się listy do K. Nitscha: A. A. Szachmatowa z lat 1908–1912 i B. M. Lapunowa z lat 1928–1938. The President of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, Kazimierz Nitsch and the Saint-Petersburg Academy of Sciences (according to archival documents) Contacts between Kazimierz Nitsch (1874–1958) – Krakow linguist, professor of Jagiellonian University, member and president of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences – with the Saint-Petersburg Academy of Sciences began even before the Polish scientist was elected to be one of its members. Evidence of these contacts can be found in the collections of the Saint-Petersburg Archives of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the PAN and PAU Archives in Krakow and the Archives of Jagiellonian University in Krakow. K. Nitsch, while still a privatdozent of Jagiellonian University, following recommendations from Jan Rozwadowski and Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, was invited to become an author of the multi-volume Encyclopedia of Slavonic Philology, published by the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the goal of writing a section on Polish dialectology. In connection with this, Nitsch undertook a wide range of dialectological trips to the Polish Kingdom, which were possible thanks to the organisational support of the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the Saint-Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Evidence of this support is stored among the Department’s documents. The dialectological trips were just one of the areas of early cooperation between K. Nitsch and the Saint-Petersburg Academy. The other areas are reflected in the correspondence conducted by K. Nitsch with Aleksey A. Shakhmatov (1864–1920), President of the Department of Russian Language and Literature as well as with Boris M. Lyapunov (1862–1943), a Russian Slavonic expert, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who after the death of A. A. Shakhmatov and E. F. Karski (1860–1931), the second great Slavonic expert and organiser of science, became a key figure connecting the Russian and European worlds of Slavonic experts. The St Petersburg Archives of the Russian Academy 114 Larisa Bondar, Marina Ponikarovskaya of Sciences contain letters from K. Nitsch to A. A. Shakhmatov from the years 1909–1914 and to B. M. Lyapunov from 1930–1936; the PAN and PAU Archives in Krakow contain letters to K. Nitsch: from A. A. Shakhmatov during the years 1908–1912 and from B. M. Lyapunov in 1928–1938. The content of this correspondence presents two basic directions of cooperation: participation in the preparation of Polish and Soviet Slavonic publications as well as organisation of the academic exchange of books. The close contacts between K. Nitsch and Soviet linguists as well as his excellent scientific achievements meant that the USSR Academy of Sciences decided to present him as a candidate for membership. The first application was submitted by B. M. Lyapunov in 1933, however, the election took place significantly later – in 1947 when K. Nitsch had already taken up the position of President of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The author covers a range of issues related to the history of the formation and development of artificial intelligence, the reasons for society’s unwillingness to integrate machines into society, the relationship of artificial intelligence with human values, ethics and security, and what awaits humanity in the future. One of the key issues in the book is the relationship between artificial intelligence and the ethics of responsibility, as well as ensuring personal rights and freedoms while actively expanding the sphere of influence of artificial intelligence.

The article raises the question of the possibility of the existence of a pan-European historical memory, analyzes the features of the development and evolution of the content of the European narrative of historical memory in the late 20th — early 21st centuries and the historical policy of a number of countries. It is shown first of all on the example of the textbook for Russian and German teachers “Russia — Germany. Milestones of joint history in collective memory”, how through joint work on educational literature on history, Russian academics and their colleagues from some European countries manage to find consensus on complex debatable issues of interpretation of historical events. The role of Russian academy of Sciences member Alexander Chubaryan in the development and dissemination of this form of international cooperation of historians is revealed.

This study of the Egyptian elements in the arts and sciences in Toulouse, from the seventeenthto the twentieth century is based on a corpus of archives and an iconographic corpus belongingto both scholarly and artistic academies and the city’s museums. It makes it possible to lookinto the way Toulouse scholars have created, trasmitted and modified representations of ancientEgypt over four centuries. Certain elements are favoured such as the pyramid, the obelisk, theSphinx as well as the gods Isis and Osiris. Their meaning and function in the dynamics of thefashioning of identities and heritage, shed light on the role played by antique elements in thesocial fields. While maintaining a strong and stable symbolic over time, they are constantlyreinterpreted to fit into a specific rhetoric. The crossing of the artistic and academic knowledgesof Egypt has yielded three choice fields to be used in Egyptian references: the relationship tonature, the relationship to knowledge and the relationship to power. Within each of them, ancient Egypt acts as a binder, a mediator between the events of the past and the contemporaryreinterpretation that is translated and staged in the city’s various museums

This work addresses to what extent businesses in the United States and the European Union have a moral obligation to participate in social integration processes in areas where they operate with the use of migrant laborers. It begins with the presupposition that a common framework as to what constitutes ethical behavior in business is needed and beneficial. It argues that the very industry that creates a need for migrant labor ought to also be involved in merging this labor successfully into the existing community and specifies that a discourse on business ethics and migration is gravely needed. This must be one that considers how businesses can become more engaged in resolving the social issues that arise both for the migrants and for the local community in which the businesses operate. The purpose would be to fill a social and humanitarian need that government alone cannot. More importantly, it will be to exercise beneficence and display responsible and sincere corporate citizenship. It is claimed that businesses that fail to encourage and participate in integration processes display a moral flaw. Cosmopolitan business ethics are proposed as a way to look at ethical business conduct and it is claimed that businesses that act as cosmopolitan citizens are morally praiseworthy.

In the middle of the 18th century, la Franche-Comté joined the network of learned societies whose objective was to contribute “to the progress of science and to the perfection of talents”: an academy of sciences, belles lettres and arts was established in Besançon. Comtois academicians thus undertook many works and were committed to promoting the emulation of their fellow citizens by regularly organizing competitions. The company’s handwritten archives, which today are kept in the Besançon municipal library and may be consulted on line in digitized form, bear witness to this activity, which continued until 1789. Conducted from a literary viewpoint, the exploration of these vast archival collections has made it possible to select a sample of previously unpublished speeches and to propose a critical edition of them. The encomium genre, closely linked to the academic institution, was worthy of our undertaking this transcription and annotation work : thus, we find in this work a series of epideictic plays, composed by the academicians themselves or by individuals having close ties to the academy through their role as clergymen or their participation in competitions. We sought in particular to unravel the sources and the influences of these various productions, to analyze their originality and style, while providing the historical clarification needed to understand them, the epideictic genre lending itself freely to the use of allusions. The study thus highlights the presence of literary eloquence in Franche-Comté on the eve of the French revolution, and the efforts to appropriate its general codes by the scholars of the province

This qualitative study investigated conflict within intercultural romantic relationships between Mexican American and European American partners within the United States. The goal of this study was to explore and understand the causes of differences in conflict and resulting relationship satisfaction in this largely underexplored area of intercultural relationships. Seven couples were interviewed and asked a total of 27 questions aimed at finding answers to the main research questions, which were: (1) in what ways do Mexican American and European American partners in romantic relationships experience conflict in their relationship; and (2) in what ways do Mexican American and European American partners try to resolve conflict; and (3) how do their conflict styles and ability to resolve conflict impact their relationship satisfaction? The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for themes related to the research questions. The most frequently occurring themes discovered were: (1) gender expectations, (2) family obligations, (3) finances, (4) experience of being the minority, and (5) language barriers and exclusion. Implications and suggestions for future research are provided.

From 1871 to 1914, Germany experienced its first taste of world power and the failure of controlling and retaining that power. German power after 1871 had sought only a dominance of continental politics and a maintenance of a status quo in Europe favorable to Germany. Following 1890, however, the German course deviated to include a vision of world power. German foreign policy until 1890 was based on two things: hegemonic control of the heart of Europe and the force of will of one man, Otto von Bismarck. Yet despite relative control of the European situation and a cautious and able statesman at the helm, Germany was quickly intoxicated by its new power as much as reacting against the almost oppressive control of Bismarck. By all measures, the German appetite for power was growing faster than ordinary diplomatic conquests could satisfy it. The need for instant gratification caused a recklessness in foreign policy and diplomacy best characterized by Krisepolitik, or crisis diplomacy. This dilemma not only resulted from a growing appetite for power, but also from a lack of understanding of international politics. The European reaction to the new German aggressiveness and to the lack of direction in German policy was one of suspicion. With the cancellation of the Reinsurance Treaty with Russian in 1890, every German move was viewed by increasingly hostile eyes. Axes of power began to form which much threatened the growing world power of Germany, a Germany which saw the need to contest the powers on as many points as possible, while avoiding war, to retain its power in the 1890s and the first years of the twentieth century.

AbstractPositive individual traits have been considered important by both Eastern and Western cultures. According to military academy manuals, the positive traits of individuals are significant elements for people who will hold military leadership positions. Since the dawn of the twenty-first century, positive psychology has had a positive trait classification of six virtues that include a total of 24 character strengths originating from the proposals of Peterson and Seligman. Because character strengths can be assessed using reliable and valid measurement instruments, several empirical investigations have been carried out in military populations in the American and European continents. The studies conducted on the 24 character strengths have been mostly on cadets. The results of these studies have shown that character strengths are related to the military population. Thus, the relationship between the 24 character strengths and several points of interest, such as membership in military academic institutions, cadets’ family of origin, and academic and military performance, among other findings, have been empirically studied.

AbstractThis chapter is anchored in European research and development (R&D) projects in the field of improvisational approaches to creativity and arts integration in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) education. These are implemented as globally co-created educational science operas, which are creative processes through which science and art educators facilitate the creation of original science-inspired operas in schools. This pedagogical approach constitutes a case study in which I explore and question imaginative, innovative environments as educational futures. Contributing to sustainable educational responses to the unpredictable challenges that the global educational environment faces requires an ethical understanding which includes other-than-humans, both living and non-living, in a relational creative process.I describe my experiences and tensions with the management of a portfolio of creative R&D projects in a university of applied sciences as a middle leader and I outline the role of management in ensuring that ethical educational futures emerge responsively through the generative potential of creativity. From this perspective, I discuss quality standards and societal impact as current-day political requirements in higher education. I argue that they have yet to be reconciled with sustainability goals through overarching institutional strategies with regards to acknowledging specific contexts and conditions within which impact emerges, consistent integration of R&D initiatives in higher education’s study programmes, and intra-actions between profession-oriented study programmes and the practice field of schools.

ABSTRACT The present study aims to investigate the body composition and somatotype of students from several European countries, who study Sports Sciences or Physical Education in their countries and were in Bulgaria, in the National Sports Academy like incoming participants in the Educational Program Erasmus. They all practice different sports at an amateur level. Material and Methodology: An anthropometric investigation of 30 male and 20 female students was done. It included the following parameters height (cm), weight (kg), body circumferences of arms and legs (cm), skinfolds (mm), and bone diameters (cm) with corresponding certified devices. Over the measured features composed parameters, characterizing body composition were calculated- a percentage of body fat (%), absolute quantity of fat tissue (kg), lean body mass (kg), an absolute quantity of muscle mass (kg), muscular circumferences of arm and tight (cm) and Body Mass Index (BMI). The somatotype of the students was defined by the Heath-Carter method. The data were compared with those of Bulgarian and Greek students studying similar disciplines- Sports Sciences and Physical Education. Conclusion: The results in concern of the % of body fat tissue seem to be similar between those of Erasmus and Bulgarian students in males (about 12%) and a little bit different in females (15-20%). Somatotypologic characteristics mark higher value in the mesomorphic component in both Erasmus and Bulgarian students.

Challenge-based learning gains popularity in engineering education for allowing students to transcend academic and disciplinary boundaries and to fully engage in real-world problems, but it is largely underexplored how to improve specific designs of such educational practices to promote interdisciplinary learning experiences and competencies. This paper describes two studies that together in two steps make up an evidence-based redesign of a challenged-based course featuring group-work projects in an undergraduate program combining engineering with liberal arts and sciences. A first study based on observation and interviews collects different and varying learning experiences throughout students’ learning activities. The results showed that interdisciplinary experiences are constructed in complex dynamics between students’ disciplinary identity formation and the interdisciplinary and collaborative course configuration. Such dynamics may result in positive learning experiences (engagement and interdisciplinary enrichment) as well as negative ones (disengagement and frustration). Especially regarding the discrepancy between common experiences across the three phases of tackling the challenge (mapping, mitigating, integrating), representatives of parties important for the course were invited to a roundtable session in a second study to discuss and reflect on the first study’s findings and what they can mean for the course design. Understandings achieved in the session are used as input for upcoming course redesign towards a more desirably organized challenge-based learning. The two-step approach towards redesign is an example of involving researchers and students in evidence-based educational redesign, exemplifying the value of naturalistic research and educational co-creation in understanding and optimizing students’ learning experience to achieve fruitful challenge-based learning.

The long-established research of Prehistory and West Asian/Northeast African archaeology (the former Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology, OREA) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences was transformed into a department of the »new« Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2021. This merging of several institutes into the new OeAI offers a wide range of new opportunities for basic and interdisciplinary research, which support the traditional research focus as well as the development of new projects in world archaeology. The research areas of the Department of Prehistory and West Asian/Northeast African Archaeology include Quaternary archaeology, Prehistory, Near Eastern archaeology and Egyptology. The groups cover an essential cultural area of prehistoric and early historical developments in Europe, Northeast Africa and West Asia. Prehistory is embedded in the world archaeology concept without geographical borders, including projects beyond this core zone, as well as a scientific and interdisciplinary approach. The focus lies in the time horizon from the Pleistocene about 2.6 million years ago to the transformation of societies into historical epochs in the 1st millennium BC. The chronological expertise of the groups covers the periods Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. The archaeology of West Asia and Northeast Africa is linked to the Mediterranean and Europe, which enables large-scale and chronologically broad basic research on human history. The department consists of the following seven groups: »Quaternary Archaeology«, »Prehistoric Phenomena«, »Prehistoric Identities«, »Archaeology in Egypt and Sudan«, »Archaeology of the Levant«, »Mediterranean Economies« and »Urnfield Culture Networks«. The groups conduct fieldwork and material analyses in Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Greece, Cyprus, Türkiye, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Sudan and South Africa.

Citizen science is an umbrella term that describes a variety of ways in which members of the public can participate in science. The main characteristics of the approach are that: citizens are actively involved in research, in partnership or collaboration with scientists or professionals; and there is a genuine outcome, such as new scientific knowledge, conservation action or policy change. Citizen science involves communities participating in data collection or analysis, or other kinds of collaboration, like co-creating research questions and interpreting data. The approach, endorsed by the European Commission for Research, Science and Innovation, allows the communities we serve to be involved in building the evidence-base on which policy decisions are made, and offers wider benefits to participants (such as expanding scientific knowledge). Citizen science can open up engagement with communities who are underrepresented in research. The FSA’s programme of citizen science work builds on collaboration between UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the FSA and Food Standards Scotland, to develop a joined-up approach to tackle the challenges of maintaining safe food in the UK. Key recommendations of this collaboration were to invest in public engagement and citizen science (aligning with UKRI’s commitment to citizen science and participatory research, as outlined in its vision (2010 – 2022)), and to build and strengthen partnerships across the food safety research and innovation community. To inform these aims, the 2021 FSA review ‘Citizen Science and Food’ explored how citizen science methods have previously been applied to FSA research priorities. The review identified a growing body of research and recommended further investment in this area to build capacity and capability, and spread the use of these methods among the food science community. Subsequently, in 2022 the FSA and UKRI(footnote 1) launched the Citizen Science for Food Standards Challenges (Opens in a new window) funding call, for projects that would use citizen science methods to address the FSA’s areas of research interest (ARIs). The aims of the call were to: assess the utility of the citizen science approach in exploring food standards challenges. facilitate the use of citizen science methods, and build capability, in the food policy research community. expand the range of people from outside of academia involved in food policy research. provide learning opportunities to the members of the public involved as citizen scientists. Six projects were awarded funding, each addressing an ARI, exploring topics such as antimicrobial resistance, food hypersensitivity, consumer practices and food safety, and novel plant breeding methods. All projects used citizen science methods to help researchers gather rich information in certain settings or communities. Across the programme, the six projects facilitated collaboration between: 600 citizen scientists, nine universities, 12 partner organisations, four community or specialist advisors and two business representative bodies. These collaborations brought multiple benefits to researchers’, citizen scientists and to the partner organisations, advisors and stakeholders. This report details these, along with key findings from each project, and operational learnings from the programme to inform future work using citizen science methodology. This report outlines preliminary findings from each of the projects and considers the success of the programme overall. Detailed findings from each project will be published in the form of project reports on the FSA website, in sequence with publications in scientific journals.

The COVID Decade: understanding the long-term societal impacts of COVID-19. The British Academy, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5871/bac19stf/9780856726583.001.

The British Academy was asked by the Government Office for Science to produce an independent review on the long-term societal impacts of COVID-19. This report outlines the evidence across a range of areas, building upon a series of expert reviews, engagement, synthesis and analysis across the research community in the Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts (SHAPE). It is accompanied by a separate report, Shaping the COVID decade, which considers how policymakers might respond. History shows that pandemics and other crises can be catalysts to rebuild society in new ways, but that this requires vision and interconnectivity between policymakers at local, regional and national levels. With the advent of vaccines and the imminent ending of lockdowns, we might think that the impact of COVID-19 is coming to an end. This would be wrong. We are in a COVID decade: the social, economic and cultural effects of the pandemic will cast a long shadow into the future – perhaps longer than a decade – and the sooner we begin to understand, the better placed we will be to address them. There are of course many impacts which flowed from lockdowns, including not being able to see family and friends, travel or take part in leisure activities. These should ease quickly as lockdown comes to an end. But there are a set of deeper impacts on health and wellbeing, communities and cohesion, and skills, employment and the economy which will have profound effects upon the UK for many years to come. In sum, the pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities and differences and created new ones, as well as exposing critical societal needs and strengths. These can emerge differently across places, and along different time courses, for individuals, communities, regions, nations and the UK as a whole. We organised the evidence into three areas of societal effect. As we gathered evidence in these three areas, we continually assessed it according to five cross-cutting themes – governance, inequalities, cohesion, trust and sustainability – which the reader will find reflected across the chapters. Throughout the process of collating and assessing the evidence, the dimensions of place (physical and social context, locality), scale (individual, community, regional, national) and time (past, present, future; short, medium and longer term) played a significant role in assessing the nature of the societal impacts and how they might play out, altering their long-term effects.
