Abstract The paper analyses the image of the contemporary Romanian woman as it appears in the book “Never Mind the Balkans, Here's Romania”, written by Mike Ormsby and published in 2008. The book of the English writer is a collection of 57 stories that present various aspects of the Romanian life from the period between 1994-2008 when Ormsby visited Romania. Even though the gallery of characters he focuses on is created from people from all over Romania and from all the strata of the society, one can discover some common characteristics of the Romanian women. They have the most varied occupations (managers, veterinarians, opera singers, publishers, etc.) and display the most varied character traits, yet the careful reader is able to discern the vivid portrait of the “generic” Romanian woman.

Romania is presently located in the eastern part of the Balkans and constitutes the largest piece of land in the Balkans. Romania and Romanian people have been engaged in linguistic and cultural relationswith Turkish tribes such as Huns, Pechenegs, Tatars, etc., in recent history for centuries. This common culture continues to live on in the Dobruja region of Romania. Romania was established after Wallachia and Moldovia left the Ottoman Empire in 1878. In a modern sense, studies on Turkisms in Romanian have begun since Jihac (1879),and many studies have been carried out in about a century and a half since then. Relevant sources were gatheredand classified to gain a collective perspective from these studies. All studies, such as articles, proceedings, Ph.D.dissertations, etc., were compared in the tables according to criteria such as country, city, language, and the researcher’s nationality. A total of 273 studies, including over 70 studies that act as the source for the transition of Turkism into Romanian and Turkism studies and 203 studies directly or indirectly related to Turkism in Romanian, was listed in references. The listed studies were presentedwithina four-step(identification, classification, analysis, and reclamation)and 53 subtitled frame, and the results obtained were interpreted.

In recent years, tourism industry has become a very important sector within the national economy and for this reason, the tourism industry in Romania is considered to have an important role in achieving the objectives defined by the European Commission through the Agenda 2020. The resilience of Romanian tourism to economic crises is characterized by the involvement of all social and age categories in tourist activities, the tourist promotion of Romanian destinations in international circuits, the complexity of the forms of tourism within the destinations in Romania, the expansion of forms of tourism in disadvantaged areas, etc. During the economic crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, tourism represented a means of growth, development and capitalization of rural spaces for the locals because, during the restrictions imposed by the authorities, the majority of tourists chose tourist stays in rural areas due to the calm, peaceful and wonderful scenery with a lot of experiences as horse riding, climbing, hiking, etc. The geographical location of Romania underlines a variety of natural components and landscapes, which outline partly the country's tourist potential: the Romanian Carpathians, the Danube River, the Black Sea with its coastline, the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, the Danube Gorge, flora and fauna of Romania and the man-made landmarks (monasteries, churches, etc.).

The article is devoted to assistance, rescue to the Jewish people in Romanian territory, including "Transnistria" in 1939–1945. Using the archival document from different institutions (USHMM, Franklyn D. Roosevelt Library) and newest literature, the author shows the scale of the assistance, its mechanism and kinds. It was determined some of existed charitable organizations and analyzed its mechanism of cooperation between each other. Before the war, the Romanian Jewish Community was the one of largest in Europe (after USSR and Poland) and felt all tragedy of Holocaust. Romania was the one of the Axis states; the anti-Semitic policy has become a feature of Marshal Antonescu policy. It consisted of deportations from some regions of Romania to newly-created region "Transnistria", mass exterminations, death due to some infectious disease, hunger, etc. At the same moment, Romania became an example of cooperation of the international organizations, foreign governments on providing aid. The scale of this assistance was significant: thanks to it, many of Romanian Jews (primarily, children) could survive the Holocaust: some of them were come back to Romanian regions, others decide to emigrate to Palestine. The emphasis is placed on the personalities, who played important (if not decisive) role: W. Filderman, S. Mayer, Ch. Colb, J. Schwarzenberg, R. Mac Clelland and many others. It was found that the main part of assistance to Romanian Jews was began to give from the end of 1943, when the West States, World Jewish community obtained numerous proofs of Nazi crimes against the Jews (and, particularly, Romanian Jews). It is worth noting that the assistance was provided, mostly, for Romanian Jews, deported from Regat; some local (Ukrainian) Jews also had the possibility to receive a lot of needful things. But before the winter 1942, most of Ukrainian Jews was exterminated in ghettos and concentration camps. The main kinds of the assistance were financial (donations, which was given by JDC through the ICRC and Romanian Jewish Community), food parcels, clothes, medicaments, and emigrations from "Transnistria" to Romania, Palestine (after 1943). Considering the status of Romania (as Nazi Germany's ally in World War II), the international financial transactions dealt with some difficulties, which delayed the relief, but it was changed after the Romania's joining to Allies. The further research on the topic raises new problem for scholars. Particularly, it deals with using of memoirs. There is one other important point is inclusion of national (Ukrainian) historiography on the topic, concerning the rescue of Romanian Jews, to European and world history context.

AbstractThe article focusses on the fate of Sovietisms in modern Romanian, i.e. the situation of words or phrases borrowed from Russian in the period of Soviet control over Eastern Europe (1945–1989). The borrowings reflect relevant concepts of Soviet-Communist economics, culture, politics and propaganda. Romanian received the largest number of Sovietisms of all Romance languages, mainly because of its close political relationship with the URSS. The use of terms which implicated a critical attitude towards the Soviet-Communist dictatorship (samizdat ‘samizdat’, aparatcic ‘apparatchik’, gulag ‘goulag’, etc.) was forbidden both in the URSS and in socialist Romania, but they passed into Russian and Romanian through western radio broadcasts, mainly Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Today, most of those Sovietisms are no longer in use in Romanian.

The literary collaboration between Carmen Sylva and Mite Kremnitz under the pseudonym “Dito und Idem” was a real accomplishment in the 19th century not only in Romania, but on the whole European continent. After a series of individual projects on translations of Romanian literature into German, Carmen Sylva and Mite Kremnitz began their literary collaboration (1882-1889). The main aim of the literary project was to promote the Romanian literature and culture in Western and Central Europe. Therefore, the project produced two epistolary novels (Aus zwei Welten, Astra) with a real success on the book market. As a result of their attainment, only one novel was translated in Romania. The epistolary novel Astra was published in 1886 in German and translated and printed in feuilleton, in Romania, the same year. Taking everything into account, the study looks into the manner in which Carmen Sylva and Mite Kremnitz managed to use literary methods characteristic to the feuilleton-novel (pickling technique, narrative “seduction”, sensational plot etc.) which assured a consistent distribution of the novel. Furthermore, the comparison between the feuilleton-format and book format of the novel Astra offered us a new perspective on the transition of translated novels into the pages of a feuilleton. All in all, the literary collaboration between Dito and Idem represents a whole page in the literary history of the Romanian novel.

Symphony orchestra of blowers, Representative Music of the Ministry of National Defense is today the performance standard in terms of wind bands in our country. Through its activity carried out during seven decades, the band crowned the creative, interpretative, educational and cultural values of the military music bands from the Romanian garrisons and military units. Having a repertoire that exceeds two thousand works from almost all musical genres (hymns, marches, patriotic and military songs, fantasies, potpourri, overtures, processing of songs and folk games, symphonic poems, symphonies, jazz, Romanian light music, etc.) from the creations of Romanian and universal composers, the wind symphony orchestra supported a rich concert, ceremonial and protocol activity, representing Romania in numerous national and international festivals.

In the interwar period, for the first time in their history, Romanian Roma managed to organise themselves on a modern basis, by forming Roma associations and unions, and issuing their own newspapers and programmes. In an effort to define themselves, they became politically active, claiming and negotiating rights. In my article I analyse the context of the interwar Roma movement, how Roma leaders of the time saw themselves and their movement, what programme(s) they had, and how they tried to achieve their goals. This was a serious challenge: As they were not self-sufficient, they heavily depended on support from Romanian institutions, and hence they had to act with caution in order to avoid any hostile reactions from the Romanian majority. Overall, the discourse of Roma elites in interwar Romania ranged between: 1) a national approach directed inwardly, toward the Roma, for ethnic mobilisation purposes, including calls to unite in order to acquire their rights, efforts to combat ethnic stigmatisation, discussions on ethnonyms (Gypsy vs. Roma) or on the importance of Roma in Romania and worldwide, the beginning of a national/ethnic mythology (past, origin, enslavement, heroization vs. victimization, etc.); and 2) a pragmatic approach directed outwardly, toward Romanian authorities and public opinion; rather than a national minority, Roma leaders presented the Roma as a social category with specific needs, due to their historical legacy. Of these two, throughout the interwar period, pragmatism prevailed. Special emphasis was placed on the issue of social inclusion, and on identifying specific problems and solutions (i.e., better access to education, settlement, deconstruction of prejudices, etc.).

NEC(ROMANTIC) is a poetry collection thematically linked through images of insects, celestial bodies, bones, and other elements of the supernatural. These images are indicative of spells, but the parenthesis around romantic in the collection’s title also implies idealism. The poems explore the author’s experiences with death, grief, love, oppression, and addiction. NEC(ROMANTIC) employs the use of traditional forms such as the villanelle, sestina, and haiku to organize these experiences. Prose poetry and a peca kucha ground the center of NEC(ROMANTIC) which alternates between lyrical and narrative gestures. NEC(ROMANTIC) is influenced by Sylvia Plath. The author uses Plath’s methods of compression, sound, and rhythm to create a swift, child-like tone when examining emotionally laden topics. Ilya Kaminsky influences lyrical elements of the poems, including surrealism. Spencer Reese’s combination of the natural and personal world is also paramount to this book. Adrienne Rich and Audre Lorde influence NEC(ROMANTIC)’s political poetry.

To extend the research on self-monitoring and romantic relationships, we explored the connection between self-monitoring and romantic jealousy using a between-subjects design. We hypothesized high self-monitors (like men) would find sexual infidelity more distressing than emotional infidelity, whereas low self-monitors (like women) would find emotional infidelity more distressing than sexual infidelity. Participants completed the 25-item Self-Monitoring Scale (Snyder, 1974) and 6 hypothetical infidelity scenarios (Buss et al., 1999). To statistically control for third variables, participants also completed the 11-item Sociosexual Orientation Inventory (Gangestad & Simpson, 1991). Although we found a main effect for self-monitoring in romantic jealousy, these results did not support our hypotheses. That is, these reliable differences in self-monitoring reflected more or less distress by emotional infidelity. Limitations (e.g., third variables, directionality) and future directions (e.g., potential moderators/mediators for self-monitoring differences in romantic jealousy) of this research are discussed.

This study examines why Romania's dissidence within the Soviet bloc has not provoked a military response from the Soviet Union during the 1965-1985 period. The hypothesis assumed is that Soviet tolerance is granted to Romania in exchange for its internal orthodoxy. Based on English and Romanian sources of information and on the author's experience having lived in Romania, the following factors are analyzed: Party internal control, its organization, leadership and ideology. The study concludes that Romania's internal orthodoxy, closely resembling Soviet society, has neutralized the country's dissident foreign policy saving it from a Soviet military intervention.

Romantic symbolism is a poorly understood concept. It was first formulated by the Romantics in a variety of contexts. Goethe develops his theory of the symbol most notably in his scientific works. Schelling's approach to the Romantic symbol is firmly rooted in his philosophical writings. Coleridge articulates a Romantic notion of symbolism across his extensive literary criticism. The foundational influence of these related theories of Romantic symbolism can be seen in the artistic, literary, and scientific productions of Romantic minded individuals all over Europe in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. However, the nature and scope of the Romantic symbol as originally formulated by Goethe, Schelling, and others has been obfuscated in unfortunate ways by the contemporary theoretical assumptions and narrow interpretations of recent academic scholarship. This thesis restores the original connotation of the Romantic symbol by identifying the common way in which it is misconstrued: the ontic fallacy.

Unlike other national movements in Central Europe at the beginning of the 19th century, the Romanian national awakening was unique in being as francophile as it was romanianophile. Parallel to the revived emphasis upon the vernacular language and the exhumation of Romanian customs and folklore, French language and culture penetrated widely into the Romanian-speaking regions and were even encouraged. The examination of this paradox opens up considerations that are at once scientific (French as a Romance language being a model for the re-Latinization of Romanian), emotional (admiration and affinity towards a sister nation), and identity-related (belief in the existence of common elements of identity). It also allows us to better understand the fact that, for two centuries now, Romania has had a tenacious tradition of writing in French, which can in no way be understood solely or even primarily as a “migration literature in French”.

In Romania, dementia care has gradually improved in the last decade. Accessibility of psychiatric services and availability of psychiatric and/or psychotherapeutic treatment have been significantly enhanced by new legislations and regulations. Public and private sectors of home care for the elderly have also been developed. Despite these changes, the management of dementia remains challenging because of delay in diagnosis and/or inappropriate treatment. Dementia care in the future in Romania should adopt a professional approach by improving education and training, as well as changing attitudes, not only among doctors (general practitioners, psychiatrists, neurologists, etc.), but also among all those involved in care (nurses, social assistants, relatives, etc.) and the general population. Reducing stigma and discrimination will contribute to early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Collaborative efforts from a medico-social and community perspective, with the support of government authorities, could provide a source of new funding, which should be distributed according to the needs of each county in Romania.

The Romanian i ntelligence services have closely monitored the Soviet forces that occupied Bessarabia and northern Bukovina in June-July 1940. Between September 1940 and June 1941, special attention was paid to Soviet aviation (aerodromes, aviation units, types of aircraft, doctrine, etc.) located on Romania's borders. On June 22, 1941, when the conflict between Germany and allies (including Romania) and the USSR began, the Romanian army had pertinent information about the Soviet armies in Bessarabia and Bukovina, especially about the air force. These data were used by Romanian-German forces to take by surprise the Soviet aeronautics and annihilate them.

The city of Iasi, Romania, with the "Gr. T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, is home to hundreds of medical students from all over the world. Regardless of the language of study (Romanian, English or French), by the time they advance to the clinical years, they must demonstrate independent use of Romanian for effective healthcare communication with local patients. However, language instruction provision in the curriculum is limited by law and insufficient by itself in fulfilling actual learning needs. Also, upon graduation, they must be ready to interact professionally in a world characterized by mobility and diversity. Thus, any additional framework for cultural immersion and academic collaboration is welcome. Such is the case of the European project Take Care - A Healthcare Language Guide for Migrants (www.takecareproject.eu), offering relevant learning materials and opportunities for multilingual and multicultural healthcare communication in up to 17 world languages (both widely used and less widely used, including Romanian, Arabic, Chinese etc.). The paper, presentation and subsequent discussion will outline the relevant features of the project, focusing on how the university e-learning platform may facilitate collaborative learning and sharing of experience among students of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The curricular gateway into the Take Care methodology and materials is the teaching of Romanian to international students. These courses allow for adequate structure and timely guidance, while students are invited to engage outside the boundaries of the classroom (as well as of the university). They may enlist the support of third parties, such as their Romanian colleagues, teaching faculty from other disciplines, healthcare practitioners and patients in Romania or their countries of origin (e.g. via online conferencing). Medical communication practices may be researched, recorded, role played, transcribed, described, compared across cultures, while developing transversal skills in an integrated, collaborative and experiential way (language skills, ICT skills, teamwork, problem solving, entrepreneurship, responsibility etc.).

The article highlights the first Romanian Encyclopedia, a luxury edition for those times, published in Sibiu in three volumes during “two centuries”: the first volume appeared in 1898, the second – in 1900, and the last – in 1904. This old and rare book is found in Special Collections Section of the Central Library. The volume was published with the support of the Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People, edited by Dr. C. Diaconovici. The first Romanian Encyclopedia is an exceptional edition with an enviable informational volume, a true jewel of cultural and spiritual heritage. Certainly, several hundred scientists, scholars, writers, historians, lawyers, engineers, etc. from all fields of human activity and many countries of the world have contributed to this titanic work. We will not be wrong if we say that all the knowledge of mankind until 1905 is contained on these few thousand pages; the work being well located in Romania and in the entire Romanian cultural space.

Eastern European countries, in particular Romania, offer much fewer opportunities for science and space outreach and informal science education compared to the West. Romanian Science Festival was founded in 2018 with the aim of answering questions raised by the inquisitive minds of children all over Romania. In 2019, we reached over 20,000 people with our live events: open-air science festivals, space talks and astronomical observations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we organised 58 live webinars of over 75 hours in total, one of the largest scientific resources in the Romanian language. Moreover, we visited 150 schools across the country, including rural areas, providing an opportunity for students to meet scientists online. Space-related topics are a key focus of the science festival as they are not included in the Romanian school curriculum. That is why the resources in the form of the expertise and career orientation offered by our mentors are so valuable to the students. The topics we address include Astronomy (asteroids, black holes, extrasolar planets, etc.), Space Exploration, Satellite Design and Earth Observations. In 2021 and 2022 we organised the ‘Space month’ during which thousands of students had the opportunity to discover careers in space, participate in competitions, meet the only Romanian astronaut, Dumitru Prunariu, in celebrations of 40 years’ of his space flight and a former NASA director of Astrophysics. Through mentorship, students discover opportunities to study and do research in astronomy. All these activities expose the public to the latest discoveries in the field, thus highlighting the importance of investing in fundamental research. This is just the beginning. The Romanian Science Festival story will continue because our team is determined to create a systemic impact in education. We will continue to add new chapters, stimulating the curiosity and imagination of people fascinated by science and space.

The internet is an extraordinary source for language teaching. Set as valuable input to teaching language and culture, online films can be extensively used by language teachers to develop students' language and socio-cultural skills. The careful choice of films is made according to pedagogical objectives such as: the development of colloquial language skills, the acquisition of socio-cultural knowledge, the practice of summary skills etc. The teaching of language and culture through films or film fragments is an entertaining and motivational activity. In this manner, learning occurs and teaching is effective. Teaching Romanian for foreign students has captured people's attention in the last 10 years and its importance is increasing. More and more foreigners arrive in Romanian for various reasons, such as to further study in the Romanian language; to find a job in Romania, to obtain a degree in an European country and continue their studies abroad in Europe; to pursue a career in our country or abroad or to attend specialization programmes to work in Romania The present article introduces the importance of teaching Romanian for foreigners and covers, in its theoretical background, advantages and drawbacks of using films in the language classroom. Research in this domain covers the majority of these topics and offers examples of pre-viewing, while-viewing and post-viewing classroom activities but it doesn't offer concrete examples of online film-based lesson scenarios for teaching foreign languages, and in particular, Romanian for foreigners. That is why our article, presents a lesson scenario based on a short online Romanian film available on the website: www.cinepub.ro. This website offers plenty of films and we found it very useful to use it both as lecture inputs and homework. The article concludes that with appropriate tasks designed to achieve the teaching objectives and to be appropriate for the students' language level, films are a valuable resource which both teach and entertain.

In this research, the authors are investigating the way how the governmental authorities in Romania approached in the first decade of the interwar period the problem of reforming the pre-university education system. Its reorganization was very important for two basic reasons: it had to ensure the national unitary character of the state and, at the same time, it had to have a decisional influence for the development direction of the new state: conservative-traditionalist (peasant) or progressive (industrialized). The principles that stood at the base of the educational policy in Romania during the discussed period, debated and analyzed by the politicians of that time, by the decision-makers, teachers, parents, specialists etc., is an important concern in today's society, given the urgent need to achieve a profound change in today's Romanian pre-university education system. The importance of the study resides from the wish to stretch those Romanian educational traditions necessary to project and implement of a curricula reform today, which should correspond both to the expectations of students, parents and the economic and social needs of contemporary society. Investing in the education system was a matter of national priority because the school was considered a tool for building the Romanian nation in the new geopolitical context. There have been massive investments in expanding the school infrastructure in terms of primary and secondary education, but also in increasing the number of teachers. In 1922 the share of public education expenditures in the state budget expenditures was 10.1%, and in 1928 it rose to 13.4%.

According to the EU 2020 strategy, one of the objectives for Romania in the field of education is that at least 40% of the population aged 30 to 34 years to complete tertiary education (university and non-university). In 2013-2014 only 23.8 % of the population is in this situation and the goal set was to reach 26.7%. Due to the fact that the number of pre-university students is estimated to decrease by 40% between 2005 and 2025, the number of traditional students is also declining. Second chance education could be considered as a solution to tackle the discrepancy between the policy goal and the real trend observed in the last few years, and eLearning appears to be an appropriate medium to encourage non-traditional students to enrol for further education and successful finish tertiary education. In Romania, only about 60% of universities are involving eLearning solutions in their current education offer. On the other hand, for the moment being, there is no Romanian HEI offering full eLearning study programs. However, there is a great diversity in Romania combining face-to-face with elements of bended learning and eLearning. Romanian universities have always been concerned with ethical aspects of their activities and many of them adopted codes of moral or ethical conduct. In some universities the principles of ethical conduct are implicit provisions of their charts or mission statements (e.g. Transilvania University of Brasov or West University of Timi?oara). As the practice of eLearning is becoming increasingly applicable in the study programs offered by Romanian universities, the ethical dimensions of the student-teacher relationship and the responsibility for the quality of learning outcomes turns into a real challenge: - Students for cheating and plagiarism attempts; - Professors for their responsibility in quality assurance of the educational resources for eLearners; - Students and professors for their co-responsibility for the quality and relevance of the eLearning outcomes. As the Romanian society perceives high corruption in individual and institutional behaviour, the ethical challenges in the field of higher education merit a closer attention. Another strong argument is offered by the frequent complaints of plagiarism in doctoral theses, which let us understand that in lower levels of higher education there are also practices against the code of ethical conduct adopted in HEIs. In this context, examples of good practice in overcoming ethical shortages in the provision of eLearning and in the evaluation of the learners should become a focus point in preparing for enhanced eLearning and blended learning (UK, etc). The purpose of this article is to analyse the status quo of the ethical challenges in the provision of eLearning by Romanian HEIs and to suggest recommendations to solve existing or potential ethical problems in the delivery of blended and or eLearning programs.

This report describes a particular situation of young population in Romania: the population of NEETs, with a focus on rural NEETs.Based on a complex methodology which uses data from different national sources (INS) and international sources (Eurostat, EU Labour Force Survey-EU-LFS, OECD),this report gives an overview of the evolution and particularities of NEETs in Romania during the previous deca-de, namely 2009-2019.Within the last ten years, the population of NEETs in Romania has grown rapidly, placing Ro-mania in first place in the EU-28 in terms of the share of this population among the young population. Thus, in 2009 Romania with a NEET rate of 13.9%, occupied first places in the EU, along with Bulgaria (19.5%), Italy (17.5%), Latvia (17.5%) (Eurostat, 2020). A decade later, in Bulgaria and Latvia, the NEET rate decreased significantly to 13.7% and 7.9%, respectively, but in Romania and Italy it increased by more than 1pp: 14.7% in Romania and 18.1% in Italy. (Eurostat, 2020). The causes for this are both individual (way of life, socio-familial origin, expectations and aspirations) and socio-economic (accessibility of the education system, development of lifelong learning, correspondence between education and labour market demand, particu-larities of the Romanian labour market, socio-economic policies supported by central and local authorities, etc.)
