Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are widely used for the navigation of land vehicles. However, the positioning accuracy of GNSS, such as the global positioning system (GPS), deteriorates in urban areas due to signal blockage and multipath effects. GNSS can be integrated with a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS)–based inertial navigation system (INS), such as a reduced inertial sensor system (RISS) using a Kalman filter (KF) to enhance the performance of the integrated navigation solution in GNSS challenging environments. The linearized KF cannot model the low-cost and small-size sensors due to relatively high noise levels and compound error characteristics. This paper reviews two approaches to employing parallel cascade identification (PCI), a non-linear system identification technique, augmented with KF to enhance the navigational solution. First, PCI models azimuth errors for a loosely coupled 2D RISS integrated system with GNSS to obtain a navigation solution. The experimental results demonstrated that PCI improved the integrated 2D RISS/GNSS performance by modeling linear, non-linear, and other residual azimuth errors. For the second scenario, PCI is utilized for modeling residual pseudorange correlated errors of a KF-based tightly coupled RISS/GNSS navigation solution. Experimental results have shown that PCI enhances the performance of the tightly coupled KF by modeling the non-linear pseudorange errors to provide an enhanced and more reliable solution. For the first algorithm, the results demonstrated that PCI can enhance the performance by 77% as compared to the KF solution during the GNSS outages. For the second algorithm, the performance improvement for the proposed PCI technique during the availability of three satellites was 39% compared to the KF solution.

ABSTRACT Organizations are adopting team-based structures to promote cooperation and coordination of actions and, thus, enhance performance (Libby and Thorne 2009; Chenhall 2008). However, team-based structures do not automatically improve performance. The economics literature suggests that working in teams may impair performance because of the potential conflict between individual and group incentives. In contrast, the organizational behavior literature argues that working in teams may enhance performance via members' collectivist cognitive orientation. This paper analyzes how both the economic incentive system and the team's predominant (individualist or collectivist) cognitive orientation affect team performance. We conduct an experiment with postgraduate students. Our results show that enhanced team performance is positively related to both individual economic incentives and predominately collectivist orientation in the team, and that the effectiveness of any incentive system design seems to be related to the team's predominant cognitive orientation.

A turbocharger is fitted to a diesel in order to enhance the inlet charge pressure, hence increasing the fresh air in the cylinder, then more fuel can be injected into the cylinder and sequentially more engine power can put out. The electrical aided turbocharged system is a mechanism adding a high speed electronic motor into a turbocharger shaft. The electronic motor can work as a motor to drive the turbocharger shaft and as a generator to generate electricity energy to storage energy. According to certain constraint conditions, the controlling strategy of the hybrid turbocharged system is presented. The simulation results about key work points reveal that controlling the turbocharged engine following the strategy can enhance the engine performance.

Transcritical CO2 refrigeration system is coupled with the single effect vapour absorption with LiBr-water as a working pair having an objective to enhance the performance of low temperature transcritical refrigeration system while using natural working pair and to reduce the electricity consumption to produce low temperature refrigeration. The high grade waste heat rejected in the gas cooler of tc-CO2 compression refrigeration system (TCRS) is utilized to run the single effect vapour absorption system (SEVAR) to enhance the energy efficiency of the system. The gas cooler in the transcritical CO2 system is having heat energy at high temperature and pressure, which is utilized to run the vapour absorption system, while the other refrigerant heat exchanger provides subcooling to further enhance the performance. The combined cycle can provide refrigeration temperature at different levels, to use it for different applications. Energetic and exergetic analysis have been done to analyze the combined system to compute the performance parameters and the irreversibilities occurring in different components to further increase the performance. The combined system is optimized for various heat rejection and refrigeration temperatures. The COP of the combined system has been enhanced by to 24.88% while the enhancement in exergetic efficiency (ηex) is observed as 10.14% respectively over tradition transcritical CO2 compression refrigeration system, with -10°C as an evaporation (TCRS cooling) temperature and exit temperature of gas cooler T4 being 40°C. The consensus problem has become a key issue in the field of collaborative telemedicine systems because of the need to guarantee the consistency of shared data. In this paper, we focus on the performance of consensus algorithms. First, we studied, in the literature, the most well-known algorithms in the domain. Experiments on these algorithms allowed us to propose a new algorithm that enhances the performance of consensus in different situations. During 2014, we presented our very first initial thoughts to enhance the performance of the consensus algorithms, but the proposed solution gave very moderate results. The goal of this paper is to present a new enhanced consensus algorithm, named Fouad, Lionel and J.-Christophe (FLC). This new algorithm was built on the architecture of the Mostefaoui-Raynal (MR) consensus algorithm and integrates new features and some known techniques in order to enhance the performance of consensus in situations where process crashes are present in the system. The results from our experiments running on the simulation platform Neko show that the FLC algorithm gives the best performance when using a multicast network model on different scenarios: in the first scenario, where there are no process crashes nor wrong suspicion, and even in the second one, where multiple simultaneous process crashes take place in the system.

Computer performance has become increasingly important at modern computer installations. At the same time, performance analysts have shown a strong interest in using expert system technology to meet these new demands. Because of the importance of the system sort product in improving overall system performance, a prototype expert system (KBSORT) was developed. When embedded in the system sort utility, KBSORT optimizes the CPU time performance of the sort applications generated by the system utility. A thorough search of the available literature revealed that no work had yet been done on applying expert system technology to enhancing sort performance. Because the research for this study is a first attempt in this area, a rigorous twelve step procedure was followed in developing the KBSORT prototype. The steps included formulating test cases, researching sort performance enhancement techniques, interviewing experts on sort performance, developing the rules for the expert system, embedding the prototype in the sort utility, and running the sort utility to study the difference in CPU time performance when the expert system was in use. Interviews with sort performance experts revealed that the expert system had to optimize in three areas. It had to choose (1) the best sorting algorithm for the current circumstances, (2) the optimal amount of core for the particular sort, and (3) the proper sort work allocation on the input/output devices available while taking into account the current level of contention for those devices. The results of this study support the original hypothesis that the use of a sort utility with an embedded expert system designed to improve CPU time performance generates applications that run more efficiently than sort applications generated by a sort utility without such an embedded expert system.

This thesis presents the initial exploratory research into an original and novel technique to enhance performance control in animatronics. An animatronic system is defined as a 3-D electro-mechanically driven facial model that can move in certain ways, when controlled by a human performer to create the "illusion of life" for a viewer. The vital elements in this form of performance are the synchronisation of lip movements to an acoustic speech signal and the animation of emotive expressions. A novel optical sensing technique is proposed based on the hypothesis that the input of distinctive articulatory or emotive movements from the performer's face would provide a more 'natural' form of control. The principle that the movement of a minimal set of points at key positions on the face can produce sufficient control information to describe the overall action is proposed to achieve this hypothesis. A comprehensive investigation into human communication, including visual speech perception and non-verbal facial expression, to define the optimum set of key points is described. Conclusions are also drawn on the primary facial actions required for successful lip synchronisation. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of the realisation of a prototype system are described. A methodology is presented for the assessment of the sensing system and the overall objectives based on the design and construction of an animatronic face, of the same dimensions as the researcher's, to produce animation of the desired actions with similar displacements. Objective analysis is achieved through the comparison of measurements by the sensor system from the performer's key point movements and those of the animatronic model. Perceptual data is generated through the visual analysis of the animated facial movement. The results and analysis of the investigations are presented in the thesis. The thesis discusses results obtained which indicate that, given certain valid assumptions, the sensor system is capable of consistent facial motion detection. It can provide sufficient control for the animatronic model to produce a limited set of facial actions in a realistic manner. Results indicate the possibilities for improved lip synchronisation and, hence, "overall character" performance.

In an attempt to improve their Product Development Processes (PDPs), many companies make considerable investments to have available cutting-edge technology such as virtual tools. While some companies have increased their productivity and time to market with them, some others have not. There seem to be fundamental factors above and beyond the use of these tools that can obstruct the PDP and one of them appears to be the misalignment between the product architecture and the organizational interactions of the actors working on it. While there has been significant work addressing the technical and social concerns of a PDP independently, the nature of the misalignment requires an integrated analysis of the product architecture and the organization. The present work studies them in an integrated approach by making use of network analyses. The research for this thesis was conducted in a Global Product Development (GPD) project of an automotive manufacturer. By first using as a reference the Multidisciplinary System Design Optimization (MSDO) to decompose the architecture of a product and then, using a specific type of Design Structure Matrix (DSM) [43] called N2 Diagram to identify the interfaces of the architecture, a network called theoretical sociogram was created. In addition, the relative sensitivity of some objectives describing the functioning of the product's systems was calculated to classify the strength of the ties in two levels: strong for those above an absolute relative sensitivity of 0.5, and weak for those with an absolute relative sensitivity lower or equal than 0.5.
(cont.) Furthermore, through surveys and interviews, the organizational interactions for two different phases of the project were mapped to construct a new set of networks called actual sociograms. By comparing the sociograms and utilizing metrics that deal with the centrality of the actors in the network, the misalignments were identified. The misalignments provided guidance to identify the enablers and obstacles influencing the PDP. It was observed that, in some cases, when the sensitivity among variables was weak, engineering teams tend to use intermediaries to share information. In some other circumstances the direct interaction doesn't occur, due to reasons including cultural aspects, complexity of the information, the way the information is structured and organizational fuzziness, among others. Based on these findings, some recommendations based on literature review, lessons learned from other industries and conversations with Product Development (PD) actors, are provided.

This thesis determines how to design the supply chain policies in a hospital for the wide array of products that exist there. This research was done through interviewing staff and analyzing data of two hospitals implementing automated point of use systems. This thesis argues that a hospital needs to implement more than one supply chain policy in order to achieve its objective of maximizing patient care while avoiding prohibitive costs. The research further proposes that a hospital should develop its supply chain for a specific product based on that product's unit cost, demand, variability, physical size, and criticality. The research analyzes demand data from two hospitals and demonstrates that hospital demand can be modeled using a variation of Croston's method for intermittent demand. This fact was used to generate an appropriate s, Q inventory policy that can be adjusted to fit any product and supply chain policy implemented within the hospital. Under simulation, the proposed inventory policy outperformed existing policies by over 50%. This research further argues current aggregate and "one-size-fits-all" strategies are inappropriate in a hospital and discusses the importance for hospitals to add physical size and criticality attributes to their product master files as these will enable further supply chain enhancements.

Wastewater treatment is an energy intensive process and sustainable processes/technologies for the treatment of wastewaters need to be considered. One such contender might be the microbial fuel cell (MFC), a subset of bioelectrochemical system (BES) which generates electricity in the process of electrogenic (generating electrons) degradation of soluble organic contaminants present in the water (or wastewater) by electrogens (electron producing bacteria) at the anode in absence of oxygen. Several issues related to the power performance (also somewhat linked to the cost) of MFCs exist causing barriers in the deployment of up-scaled MFC system and the continual research from a multitude of discipline is focusing on overcoming these issues. Implementation of an MFC system for wastewater treatment would require a large array of MFCs to meet the treatment capacity of the wastewater treatment plant. Commissioning and continual operation of such MFCs would require rapid and cost-effective start-up and improvement in their performance. Optimisation of the power performance is addressed through a systems approach in this study, where improvement in the performance is sought through the system design and control strategies applied to the MFCs. The start-up rate of MFCs has been reduced by 45% using maximum power point tracking (MPPT), which is believed to be cost-effective as exogenous energy (such as in the case of poised-potential) is not required for the rapid start-up. The control of MFC power would need to be considered when up-scaled MFC system is realised. The controller implementation benefits from linearised system models. The viability of such piecewise linearisation of the nonlinear MFC system was demonstrated and the data were shown to be reasonably represented by the 1st order process models throughout its operating range. The occurrence of voltage reversal during stack operation of MFCs is a concern in large arrays particularly, and has been shown to be avoidable by adopting the hybrid stack connectivity. Further enhancement of the performance was sought through the detailed design and fluid dynamics modeling to obtain highly mixed anolyte at low input power, using improved helical anodes which increased the MFC performance at all the tested flow rates (1, 3 and 8 mL min-1) compared to previously studied helical anodes. The up-scaling of MFCs by modularisation was demonstrated and it was shown that the use of improved helical anodes can increase the modular length of the MFC without compromising the power performance. Aggregated power produced from the multi-module MFC (containing 5 modules) was 28.05 ± 3.5 mW (19.75 ± 2.47 W m-3) with an PhD Thesis – Hitesh Chandubhai Boghani 2014 V individual MFC power of 5.61 ± 0.7 mW, when fed with 10 mM sodium acetate at 3 mL min-1 flow rate and at 22 ± 3 °C. So, this thesis presents the strategies for improvement in the performance of MFCs for their applications in wastewater treatment and such strategies may also be transferable to their other applications.

In spite of the high performance characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell / gas turbine (SOFC/GT) hybrid system, it is very difficult to maintain the high level performance under real application conditions, which generally require part-load operations. The performance loss of SOFC/GT hybrid systems under part-load operating conditions is closely related to that of the gas turbine. The power generated by the gas turbine in a hybrid system is much smaller than that generated by the SOFC. However, its contribution to the system efficiency is very important especially at part-load operating conditions. Therefore, to enhance the part-load performance of hybrid systems, it is useful to reduce the relative amount of power generated by a gas turbine that delivers lower performance than a SOFC. In the present study, several part-load operation strategies related to the gas turbine are studied and their impacts on the performance of a SOFC/GT hybrid system are discussed.

Abstract Background The continuous operations of axial and Centrifugal type of blowers and Compressors are critical for the Gas Processing facilities and Compressor Surge which can cause catastrophic failure of the equipment, leading to loss of containment and production upsets Whenever there is no insufficient forward flow through a compressor, surge occurs. Surge is the inability for the compressor to sustain the forward flow and flow reversal happens very quickly. The purpose of the Anti-surge valve (ASV) is to protect the machine from surge conditions by increasing the suction flow. To sustain the forward flow, a recycle line is provided with ASV which quickly opens as per the requirement with minimum dead time and hysteresis. Hence the response of Anti surge valve plays an essential role in compressor performance and compressor life cycle. In current set up, sometimes the response time of anti-surge valve was not achieved, and this caused machine going to surge or process upset. To overcome this certain minimum opening of ASV is kept, which introduces continuous recycle and energy wastage. New technology Considering the above limitations, a new actuator technology has been reviewed. The newly introduced Electraulic technology is combined between both, Electric mechanism and hydraulic system, to achieve faster response time, almost negligible overshoot and dead time. This enabled anti surge valve to open very fast on demand which comes and bring the machine out of surge quicker. As a Pilot project, this actuator technology has been implemented in one of the anti-surge valve 552FV1583 of the combustion air blower 552B101A, which is critical equipment in Habshan -5 sulphur recovery unit. This new technology actuator was commissioned and in operation since Oct-2021. Conclusion & Recommendation Various tests have been carried out to confirm the smooth and fast performance of the ASV and the results are found to be satisfactory. This has enabled to tune the anti-surge controller settings which caused reduction in surge margin. This has resulted in consistent energy savings due to the less or minimum recycle operation compared to the previous operating scenario with conventional pneumatic actuators. Valve performance parameters are consistently exceeded compared to the KPI /Benchmark for this application. Reduction of motor power and equivalent Energy savings 2800 MW per year observed, which will result in the direct cost savings of fuel consumption to generate the electricity. This saving of motor power is equivalent to saving a 1139 tons of CO2 emission per year. Based on the successful outcome of this Pilot, this technology can be considered for similar applications with existing poor performance of anti-surge valves. Also, for new anti-surge valves in the Project, where this is found to provide the required cost benefit.

Abstract Mitigating the effect of potential disruptive events at the operating phase of an engineered system therefore improving the system’s failure resilience is an importance yet challenging task in system operation. For complex networked system, different stakeholders complicate the analysis process by introducing different characteristics, such as different types of material flow, storage, response time, and flexibility. With different types of systems, the resilience can be improved by enhancing the failure restoration capability of the systems with appropriate performance recovery strategies. These methods include but not limit to, rerouting paths, optimal repair sequence and distributed resource centers. Considering different characteristics of disruptive events, effective recovery strategies for the failure restoration must be selected correspondingly. However, the challenge is to develop a generally applicable framework to optimally coordinate different recovery strategies and thus lead to desirable failure restoration performances. This paper presents a post-disruption recovery decision-making framework for networked systems, to help decision-makers optimize recovery strategies, in which the overall recovery task is formulated as an optimization problem to achieve maximum resilience. A case study of an electricity distribution system is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed framework and the comparison of several recovery strategies for disruption management.

The disappointing performance of education systems in developing countries in improving learning outcomes has spurred research aimed at establishing what features of education systems determine their effectiveness or failure in improving learning outcomes. There has been special interest in the challenge of making education systems more coherent for learning, i.e., developing systems in which accountability relations among stakeholders across key elements of education policy design support and sustain strong learning outcomes. In the emergent literature on the political economy of education, a great deal of attention has been directed at Vietnam, a lower-middle income country whose results on assessments of learning have been vastly higher than all other countries in its income group and have even surpassed learning assessment results of many OECD countries. This has led to a raft of research papers asking, “how did Vietnam do it?” Addressing this question, this paper explores Vietnam’s education system’s coherence for learning through an analysis of accountability relations across three key elements of education policy design — delegation, finance, and information. Our aim is to ascertain how features of these policy elements’ practice may variously support or undermine the Communist Party of Vietnam’s objective of promoting quality education and improved learning outcomes for all. The potentially surprising answer to the “how coherent” question posed in the title is, not really that much. Analysis finds that Vietnam’s education system remains weakly "coherent around learning" and is best understood as a “formal process compliant” system that, despite its many strengths, is nonetheless underperforming relative to its potential. The implications of this for efforts to enhance the system’s performance around learning are explored in brief.

Recent literature on the political economy of education highlights the role of political settlements, political commitments, and features of public governance in shaping education systems’ development and performance around learning. Vietnam’s experiences provide fertile ground for the critique and further development of this literature including, especially, its efforts to understand how features of accountability relations shape education systems’ performance across time and place. Globally, Vietnam is a contemporary outlier in education, having achieved rapid gains in enrolment and strong learning outcomes at relatively low levels of income. This paper proposes that beyond such felicitous conditions as economic growth and social historical and cultural elements that valorize education, Vietnam’s distinctive combination of Leninist political commitments to education and high levels of societal engagement in the education system often works to enhance accountability within the system in ways that contribute to the system’s coherence around learning; reflecting the sense and reality that Vietnam is a country in which education is a first national priority. Importantly, these alleged elements exist alongside other features that significantly undermine the system’s coherence and performance around learning. These include, among others, the system’s incoherent patterns of decentralization, the commercialization and commodification of schooling and learning, and corresponding patterns of systemic inequality. Taken together, these features of education in Vietnam underscore how the coherence of accountability relations that shape learning outcomes are contingent on the manner in which national and local systems are embedded within their broader social environments while also raising intriguing ideas for efforts to understand the conditions under which education systems’ performance with respect to learning can be promoted, supported, and sustained.

The Illinois Marine Transportation System (IMTS) is a key component of the nation’s inland waterway system. IMTS is comprised of 27 locks and dams, 19 port districts, more than 350 active terminals, and 1,118 miles of navigable inland waterways traversing along the borderline or within the state of Illinois. However, the infrastructure of IMTS is aging and its conditions are deteriorating. To monitor the performance of IMTS and guide infrastructure investment to enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability of the system, a comprehensive performance measurement program is needed. To this end, the objective of this project is to create an integrated, comprehensive, and maintainable database that facilitates performance measurement of maritime freight to, from, and through Illinois. To achieve this objective, a review of the literature on maritime freight transportation both in the United States and abroad was performed. To gauge practitioners’ points of view, a series of phone interviews and online surveys of Illinois’ neighboring state DOT officials, officials from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Illinois port district authorities, and carriers operating in Illinois was also conducted. With the findings from the literature review and an understanding of state DOT practices, the needed and available data sources for a maritime freight performance measurement program were identified. Building on all the above efforts, a first-of-its-kind PM database for IMTS was designed and developed, along with a detailed user manual, ready for IDOT’s immediate use and future updates. In addition, opportunities for IDOT to use the database to conduct analysis are discussed. Key programmatic recommendations that outline the role of IDOT as a champion and as a facilitator are further included. The outcome of this project will help IDOT gain much-needed knowledge of and develop programs to improve IMTS performance, increase multimodal transportation network capacity, and expand the transportation and logistics sector of the state, which ultimately benefit the people and economy of Illinois.

This paper describes how Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) can be integrated into economy wide analytical frameworks to enhance evidence based decision making. Examples from applications of the Integrated Environmental Economic Modelling (IEEM) Platform show how explicitly accounting for the contributions of the environment to the economy in economic forecasting can lead to substantially different policy recommendations, overcoming some of the scope limitations of traditional economic performance analysis. Furthermore, the paper describes how NCA can be integrated into more traditional economic performance measurements, such as the System of National Accounts and their indicators such as adjusted Gross Domestic Product and Genuine Savings. Integration of natural capital into economy-wide analytical frameworks leads to better policy uptake of research findings and it empowers policymakers to avoid short-sighted decisions, which, although they can generate short-term economic gain, can have adverse consequences for economic, social, and environmental sustainability in the long run.
