Particulate emission from internal combustion engines is a complex phenomenon that needs to be understood in order to identify its main factors. To this end, it appears necessary to study the impact of unburned gases, called blow-by gases, which are reinjected into the engine intake system. A series of transient tests demonstrate their significant contribution since the particle emissions of spark-ignition engines are 1.5 times higher than those of an engine without blow-by with a standard deviation 1.5 times greater. After analysis, it is found that the decanter is not effective enough to remove completely the oil from the gases. Tests without blow-by gases also have the advantage of having a lower disparity, and therefore of being more repeatable. It appears that the position of the “endgap” formed by the first two rings has a significant impact on the amount of oil transported towards the combustion chamber by the backflow, and consequently on the variation of particle emissions. For this engine and for this transient, 57% of the particulate emissions are related to the equivalence ratio, while 31% are directly related to the ability of the decanter to remove the oil of the blowby gases and 12% of the emissions come from the backflow. The novelty of this work is to relate the particles fluctuation to the position of the endgap ring.

Abstract The CMS detector will undergo the replacement of its current endcap calorimeter by a new high granularity calorimeter (HGCAL). The new HGCAL will need to withstand much higher radiation levels than the present endcaps. This poses tight requirements on the front-end electronics, including the powering chain. As part of this chain, a low-dropout linear regulator (LDO) has been designed and prototyped for post-regulation for HGCAL, providing extremely low noise and stable power to the analog front-end. We present results from tests of the LDO, including from a detailed irradiation campaign.

Abstract The compact muon solenoid experiment phase 1 hadron calorimeter upgrade implemented the first large-scale application of VTRx modules, radiation and magnetic field tolerant optical transceivers. During run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, the CMS hadron calorimeter endcap experienced a failure of control communication that revealed a variable manufacturing weakness in the VTRx and affected nearly half of the communication links in the hadron calorimeter endcaps. The CMS hadron calorimeter team provided the first observation of this phenomenon, linked the loss to the VTRx, revealed its temperature dependence, and pioneered the mitigation tactic adopted by other LHC experiments. Aspects of the CMS hadron calorimeter team’s role in the larger VTRx investigations are presented.

AbstractAccurate stress–strain measurements in triaxial tests are critical to compute reliable mechanical parameters. We focus on compliance at the interfaces between the specimen and endcaps, and test specimens under various triaxial conditions using different instrumentation protocols. The tested materials include aluminum, Eagle Ford shale, Berea sandstone, and Jubaila carbonate. Results obtained following common practice reveal that surface roughness at the specimen-endcap interfaces leads to marked seating effects, affects all cap-to-cap based measurements and hinders ultrasonic energy transmission. In particular, cap-to-cap deformation measurements accentuate hysteretic behavior, magnify biases caused by bending and tilting (triggered by uneven surfaces and misalignment), and affect the estimation of all rock parameters, from stiffness to Biot’s α-parameter. Higher confining pressure diminishes seating effects. Local measurements using specimen-bonded strain gauges are preferred (Note: mounting strain gauges on sleeves is ill-advised). We confirm that elastic moduli derived from wave propagation measurements are higher than quasi-static moduli determined from local strain measurements using specimen-bonded strain gauges, probably due to the lower strain level in wave propagation and preferential high-velocity travel path for first arrivals.

We report on the development and performance of a novel track-finding processor for the Level-1 trigger of the CMS endcap muon system. The processor links track segments identified in the cathode-strip chambers of the endcap muon system into complete three-dimensional tracks. It then measures the momentum of the best track candidates from the sagitta measured between three muon chambers in the endcap fringe field. The processor is pipelined at 40 MHz, and has an overall latency of 400 ns. The logic for the prototype is implemented in high-density FPGAs and SRAM memory. It receives approximately 3 gigabytes of data every second from a custom backplane operating at 280 MHz. Test results of the prototype are consistent with expectation.

The Large Hadron Collider and the ATLAS experiment at CERN will explore new frontiers in physics in Run 3 starting in 2022. In the Run 3 ATLAS Level-1 endcap muon trigger, new detectors called New Small Wheel and additional Resistive Plate Chambers will be installed to improve momentum resolution and to enhance the rejection of fake muons. The Level-1 endcap muon trigger algorithm will be processed by new trigger processor boards with modern FPGAs and high-speed optical serial links. For validation and performance evaluation, the inputs and outputs of their trigger logic will be read out using a newly developed software-based readout system. We have successfully integrated this readout system in the ATLAS online software framework, enabling commissioning in the actual Run 3 environment. Stable trigger readout has been realized for input rates up to 100 kHz with a developed event-building application. We have verified that its performance is sufficient for Run 3 operation in terms of event data size and trigger rate. The paper will present the details of the integration and commissioning of the software-based readout system for ATLAS Level-1 endcap muon trigger in Run 3.

Les émissions de particules d’un moteur à combustion interne de type allumage commandé sont très variables. La richesse du mélange air/carburant ne suffit pas à définir parfaitement la fonction de caractérisation de ces émissions. Des essais ont souligné l’importance du phénomène de balayage de l’huile par les gaz du blowby sur les émissions de particules Ceci est due à la position des segments qui tournent continuellement autour de leurs gorges. La fonction de caractérisation des émissions de particules a été complété en tenant compte de ces nouvelles conditions. Puis, la création d’un modèle de simulation des gaz du blowby sous GT-suite a permis de caractériser ces flux et d’appréhender ces mécanismes. Par exemple, au ralenti, il se créé un phénomène d’accumulation d’huile sur la couronne du piston. Des essais expérimentaux ont confirmé l’importance de la durée du ralenti sur les émissions de particules. Enfin, l’étude de l’impact du vieillissement de l’huile et du filtre à huile sur les émissions de particules a été investiguée. Un ensemble « huile + filtre » vieillit dans des conditions réelles présente un taux d’émission de particules deux fois plus important qu’un ensemble neuf. Finalement ces travaux ont permis de compléterla fonction de caractérisation des émissions de particules afin d’être plus en adéquation avec les conditions réelles de fonctionnement d’un moteur à combustion interne de type allumage commandé
Particulate emissions from a spark ignition engine are highly variable. The equivalent ratio of the air/fuel mixture is not sufficient to perfectly define the characterisation function of these emissions. Tests have highlighted the importance of the phenomenon of oil scavenging by the blowby gases on the particulate emissions. This is due to the position of the piston rings which rotate continuously around their grooves. The particle emission characterisation function was completed taking into account these new conditions. Then, the creation of a blowby gas simulation model in GTsuite allowed the characterisation of these flows and the understanding of these mechanisms. For example, at idle conditions, oil accumulates on the piston crown. Experimental tests confirmed the importance of the idling time on particle emissions. Finally, the impact of oil and oil filter ageing on particulate emissions was investigated. An "oil + filter" assembly aged under real conditions has a particle emission rate twice as high as a new assembly. Finally, this work has allowed to complete the particle emission characterisation function in order to be more in line with the real operating conditions of a spark ignition engine

Resumo: Este trabalho consiste em uma leitura de Fim de Partida, de Samuel Beckett, construída a partir da hipótese de que esta peça, com o que pode ser definido como uma recusa sistemática a tudo o que lhe venha de fora, é capaz de integrar à sua própria estrutura formal os impasses gerados pelas tentativas de interpretá-la, em um movimento que paradoxalmente fortalece cada vez mais sua lógica interna à medida que a interpretação é negada. Ao longo de três capítulos, busca-se investigar as diferentes ramificações dessa ideia como forma de esboçar a posição-limite na qual a peça se encontra: no primeiro capítulo, a hipótese em questão é desenvolvida a partir da leitura de alguns objetos de Fim de Partida, e a partir disso se argumenta que os personagens se aproximam mais de seus objetos fraturados e ausentes do que de pessoas; no segundo, a condição desses personagens é desenvolvida no sentido de um confronto entre duas formas de temporalidade, a progressão e a circularidade, submetidas ao mesmo princípio de escassez que atravessa outros níveis da peça; no terceiro capítulo, a hipótese central é a de que em Endgame são colocados em questão diversos procedimentos do humor de forma altamente destrutiva, e a significação retroativa que seus destroços passam a ter adquirido nesse processo podem ser extrapolados de modo a produzir um pequeno vislumbre, de dentro da própria peça, tanto de seu estatuto de obra de arte, quanto de sua relação complexa com a tradição
Abstract: This work consists in a reading of Samuel Beckett's Endgame built upon the hypothesis that the play, through what can be defined as a deliberate exclusion of everything external to it, is capable of integrating the resulting deadlocks from the attempts of its interpretation to its own formal structure, in a paradoxical movement that strengthens the play's internal logic through the denial of interpretation. Throughout three chapters, this work aims to explore different ramifications of that idea in order to outline the boundary represented by the play: in the first chapter, the interpretative hypothesis is developed upon a reading of the objects of Endgame, culminating in the idea that its characters are closer to the absent and fractured objects that they demand than to proper persons; in the second chapter, their condition is developed in the sense of a confrontation between two forms of temporality, progression and circularity, which are submitted to the same principle of scarcity that penetrates other levels of the play; in the third chapter, the central hypothesis is that Endgame puts into question some procedures of humor in a highly destructive manner, and that the retroactive meaning acquired by the resulting ruins of this process may be extrapolated into a glimpse, from within the play itself, both of its status as a work of art and of its complex relationship with tradition

The pencil shoulder cutting device is a stepper motor driven mechanism to cut a small groove into the end of a pencil, which is needed for a novel seed-capsule endcap for a new pencil called Sprout. The pencil was developed by a team of MIT graduate students, and the shoulder cutting device is one step in an automated assembly process for Sprout. The device autonomously cuts a 0.0075in. deep shoulder into one end of the pencil using a 0.25in. end mill. The device includes a stabilizing sleeve that reduces vibration of the pencil during machining, and creates a vacuum seal so that chips from the pencil are cleanly removed. The cutting time for each pencil is 2s, with an absolute accuracy of 3.1x10-4 in. for the depth of cut after ten tests with the machine. The capsules fit correctly onto the shoulders when done by hand, and the design will be confirmed once the entire machine is running autonomously.

Inward flow radial and mixed flow turbines are effectively utilized in both turbochargers and small gas turbine auxiliary power units (APU’s), where moderately high levels of efficiency can be readily attained with simple cast components, less sensitive to blade endgap clearances than axial turbines. This paper first provides an overview of radial turbine performance characteristics for turbocharger and gas turbine applications as basically influenced by specific speed, reaction, velocity ratio, and rotor tip to exducer root mean square (RMS) diameter ratio. Since turbine rotor mass and inertia play important roles in structural integrity and engine acceleration characteristics, the effects of rotor blade solidity on turbine efficiency are then discussed based upon past research, and supported by analysis of a one dimensional friction model of the rotor passage. Finally the effects of rotor reaction on radial turbine flow versus pressure characteristics are examined pertinent to engine matching requirements.
