Three high-entropy Sm(Eu,Gd)Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2O3 perovskite solid solutions were synthesized using the usual ceramic technology. The XRD investigation at room temperature established a single-phase perovskite product. The Rietveld refinement with the FullProf computer program in the frame of the orthorhombic Pnma (No 62) space group was realized. Along with a decrease in the V unit cell volume from ~224.33 Å3 for the Sm-based sample down to ~221.52 Å3 for the Gd-based sample, an opposite tendency was observed for the unit cell parameters as the ordinal number of the rare-earth cation increased. The average grain size was in the range of 5–8 μm. Field magnetization was measured up to 30 kOe at 50 K and 300 K. The law of approach to saturation was used to determine the Ms spontaneous magnetization that nonlinearly increased from ~1.89 emu/g (Sm) up to ~17.49 emu/g (Gd) and from ~0.59 emu/g (Sm) up to ~3.16 emu/g (Gd) at 50 K and 300 K, respectively. The Mr residual magnetization and Hc coercive force were also determined, while the SQR loop squareness, k magnetic crystallographic anisotropy coefficient, and Ha anisotropy field were calculated. Temperature magnetization was measured in a field of 30 kOe. ZFC and FC magnetization curves were fixed in a field of 100 Oe. It was discovered that the Tmo magnetic ordering temperature downward-curve decreased from ~137.98 K (Sm) down to ~133.99 K (Gd). The spin glass state with ferromagnetic nanoinclusions for all the samples was observed. The <D> average and Dmax maximum diameter of ferromagnetic nanoinclusions were calculated and they were in the range of 40–50 nm and 160–180 nm, respectively. The mechanism of magnetic state formation is discussed in terms of the effects of the A-site cation size and B-site poly-substitution on the indirect superexchange interactions.

Systematic studies of treatment options for femoral head osteonecrosis have been hindered by the lack of an animal model that mimics the human event of femoral head collapse. The (bipedal) emu model of osteonecrosis has proven to progress to collapse following an external insult. Since osteonecrosis clinically has multiple etiologies, various alternatives are seemingly appropriate to initiate lesions for research purposes. This study compared osteonecrosis initiated by a local cryoinsult, to that initiated by a large systemic dose of steroid (methylprednisolone acetate), and by a combination of steroid and cryoinsult. One year post-insult, the animals were sacrificed and their femoral heads harvested. A custom-written computer program was used to expedite analysis of the global distribution of histologically apparent osteonecrosis, as determined by the Ficat scale. Following whole-head analysis, grade distributions were calculated, and a measure of spatial clustering of histologic abnormality was calculated using Moran's I statistic. Normal femoral heads showed very small amounts of histological abnormality, and no significant spatial clustering. Femoral heads receiving isolated cryoinsult had a greater incidence of high-grade abnormality, as well as statistically significant spatial clustering of that abnormality. Steroid-only animals had a higher percentage of diffuse, low-grade abnormality. The group receiving both steroid and cryoinsult showed the highest overall abnormality, with statistically significant clustering of that high-grade abnormality. Cryoinsult, both in isolation and in combination with a steroid regimen, appeared necessary to mimic the clinically typical focal lesions of osteonecrosis.

AbstractA simple, practical search/match program, RIFRAN 85, has been written and implemented for the EMG 666B programmable calculator. The computer programs are written in EMG Assembler, which is identical to the assembler language for the Hewlett-Packard 9821 calculator. The EMG 666B is made in Hungary and has 8 kbytes of operational memory. The programs interactively provide qualitative phase analysis of X-ray powder diffraction patterns using standard files collected from published data and stored on a compact magnetic tape cassette. Each standard pattern can comprise up to 35 two-theta — intensity pairs. The identification procedure is based on the comparison of the diffraction data of the standard and of the unknown within limits imposed by user-established match and chemical criteria. This paper describes the algorithm used and the performance of the RIFRAN 85 identification system. The system's operation is illustrated using an example of phase analysis of a mineral sample.

Abstract Computer Programming Learners usually fail to get approved in introductory courses because solving problems using computers is a complex task. The most important reason for that failure is concerned with motivation; motivation strongly impacts on the learning process. In this paper we discuss how techniques like program animation, and automatic evaluation can be combined to help the teacher in Computer Programming courses. In the article, PEP system will be introduced to explain how it supports teachers in classroom and how it engages students on study sessions outside the classroom. To support that work, students’ motivation was studied; to complement that study, a survey involving students attending the first year of Algorithms and Programming course of an Engineering degree was done. It is also presented a tool to analyse surveys, using association rules.

A non-hardware method for computer control of the geometric parameters of a twisted thread using a two-dimensional Fourier transform program of its computer image is proposed. First, the program calculates the diffraction pattern from the investigated image of the thread. Then, the same program builds a diffraction pattern from the image of the first pattern, which does not contain speckles in the proposed method. This makes it possible to carry out its automatic computer analysis with the output to the digital values ​​of the calculated parameters. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated on model and industrial samples of synthetic threads.

Electric vehicles use lots of ECU controllers in the CAN network, the quality of ECU parts used in vehicles is closely related to safe driving. This paper develops a kind of fault diagnostic equipment for electric vehicles ECU controllers. This device has designed digital input signal acquisition module, the output switch signal module, power supply module and fault simulation module based on CAN bus communication principle. Then we use LabVIEW developing computer program in order to monitor and control the whole system.

Medical students and physicians need to improve their understanding of the role of nutrition and the multidisciplinary team in diabetes care. To assist in this learning, an interactive computer program was cleveloped that focused on prescribing diets for patients with diabetes. Parallel 10-item knowledge tests and an 8-item self-efficacy scale were used to evaluate the efficacy of the computer program among 41 third-year medical students. Mean knowledge scores increased significantly after using the computer program. Posttest knowledge scores for the medical students approached the level achieved by general practice dietitians with no diabetes specialty training. Mean self-efficacy scores increased significantly. The mean time spent on the educational component of the program was under 30 minutes. Computer-assisted diabetes nutrition education proved to be an efficient and effective method for teaching basic nutrition competencies to medical students. This program is available on the World Wide Web (http://medicine.aecom.yu. edu/ diabetes/DEC.htm) and may be a useful means for providing basic diabetes nutrition education to primary healthcare providers from a variety of disciplines as well as for medical students.

Thermal conductivity of L-J potential solid argon nano-films is calculated by equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations in the temperature range from 30K to 80K. A LAMMPS computer program has been modified based on classical molecular dynamics. It can be directly used to calculate the thermal conductivity of nano-films in the direction perpendicular to the film plane. Thermal conductivity calculated from this program is compared with experimental data. It is found that this computer program is competent to calculate the thermal conductivity of solid nano-films. It is also found that thermal conductivity is dependent on the simulation temperature and film thickness.

Compiler error messages should allow programmers to understand and solve quickly problems found during the compilation process. However, compilers usually issue short contextless messages with little information and with terms that are difficult to understand. This work introduces the plug-in Error Message System (EMS) that allows the presentation of easy-to-understand and more meaningful error messages. EMS is a plug-in to the Eclipse IDE. It is highly configurable through Domain Specific Languages (DSLs). The DSLs allow that regular users build their own error messages and share them. Beginner programmers can use a set of error messages adapted to them thus reducing the time of understanding and correction of compilation errors.
As mensagens de erro dos compiladores devem permitir que os programadores compreendam e solucionem os problemas encontrados durante o processo de compilação rapidamente. Entretanto, os compiladores usualmente emitem mensagens curtas, sem contexto, pouco informativas e com termos de difícil compreensão. Este trabalho apresenta o plug-in Error Message System (EMS) que permite a apresentação das mensagens de erro mais fáceis de entender e mais informativas. EMS é um plugin para a IDE Eclipe e é altamente configurável através de linguagens específicas de domínio(LED). As LEDs permitem que usuários comuns façam suas próprias mensagens de erro e as compartilhem. Programadores iniciantes podem utilizar um conjunto de mensagens adaptadas a eles, reduzindo o tempo de compreensão e correção dos erros de compilação.

Teaching programming is a great challenge in every educational stage and in several institutions of the world, being a general problem in the area of computing education. In the Brazilian Informatics vocational high school programs, historical issues of the Professional Education System in Brazil make this problem even harder. With these issues in mind, we proposed and evaluated a teaching approach based on spiral learning associated with programming environments for novices and contexts relevant to students, aiming to improve motivation and learning in programming courses. Three case studies were carried out: one in Midlle School, and two in vocational high school programs in Informatics in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil. The case studies were split into three contextualized blocks, where programming content was learned through a context, using appropriate tools. Contexts such as games, geometric figures and images were used, as well as Scratch, JES and PPlay tools. Given the qualitative and quantitative nature of this research, we used sur- veys, interviews, observations, evaluations and logbooks to obtain the data. Results on motivation are described in terms of the ARCS model (Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction), and the results on learning are described from student exams and qualitative data. Results point to high levels of motivation during the whole approach and to the influence in student motivation of either maintaining or changing context and tools used in each block. Regarding learning, results demonstrate that the approach has enhanced learning of some concepts. One noti- ces that Scratch helped in understanding Functions, Select and Repeart Structures, and that the use of the Python language led to better understanding of Variables and Relational Operators. About object-oriented programming concepts, students showed ease with Classes, Constructors, Objects and Variables. This study also reveals the mutual influence between student motivation and learning. The results, materials, research design and the courses presented in this work may contribute to the design of other vocational courses and to the research on teaching and learning programming.
O ensino de programa??o ? um grande desafio em todas as modalidades de ensino e em v?rias institui??es de diversos pa?ses, configurando-se como um problema geral na ?rea de Computa??o. Nos cursos t?cnicos em inform?tica brasileiros, somam-se os problemas hist?ricos da Educa??o Profissional no Brasil. Diante destes problemas, buscou-se a motiva??o e o aprendizado em disciplinas de programa??o, atrav?s de uma abordagem se ensino em espiral e contextualizada. Foram realizados tr?s estudos de caso: um, no ensino Fundamental, e dois, em cursos t?cnicos de Inform?tica, no munic?pio de Feira de Santana, Bahia. Os estudos de caso foram divididos em tr?s blocos contextualizados, onde estudavam-se conte?dos de programa??o atrav?s de um contexto, usando ferramentas apropriadas. Foram utilizados contextos como Jogos, Figuras geom?tricas e Imagens, assim como as ferramentas Scratch, JES e PPlay. Tendo em vista o car?ter qualitativo e quantitativo da pesquisa, utilizamos question?rios, entrevistas, observa??es, avalia??es e di?rios de bordo para obten??o dos dados. Os resultados sobre motiva??o s?o descritos em termos do modelo ARCS (Aten??o, Relev?ncia, Confian?a e Satisfa??o), enquanto que os resultados sobre aprendizagem s?o descritos a partir das avalia??es e dos dados qualitativos. Os resultados apontam para altos ?ndices de motiva??o, durante toda a abordagem e para a influ?ncia direta da manuten??o ou mudan?a do contexto e das ferramentas, utilizadas nos blocos, na motiva??o dos estudantes. Quanto `a aprendizagem, os resultados demonstram que a abordagem potencializou a aprendizagem de alguns conceitos. Percebe-se que o Scratch auxiliou na compreens?o de Fun??o, Estruturas de Repeti??o e Sele??o e que o uso da linguagem Python possibilitou uma maior compreens?o sobre Vari?veis e sobre Operadores Relacionais. Quanto ? orienta??o a objetos, os estudantes apresentaram facilidades em Classes, Construtores e Objetos. Este estudo revela ainda, rela??es de influ?ncia entre a motiva??o dos estudantes e a aprendizagem. Computer programs must give a technical effect that goes beyond"normal physical interaction"to be considered to belong to a technical field. The invention shall be be susceptible of industrial application, which means that it should be possible to reproduce or use in any other industrial way. The reqirement that the invention shall be new means that the technique must not be previously known because of patents, published articles, etc. That an invention shall be a contribution to the state of the art in a technical field means that the invention shall not be obvious to invent for a person skilled in the art. Patents do effect the innovation among the inventers, but in most industries most inventions would be invented independent if there was a patent system or not. Only in pharmaceuticals- and chemicals industries, the patent is of a great importance. Patents are probably of lesser importance for the computer industry than for those industries, even though the industry is of great importance for many other industries and therefor, the patent system can be of great importance for some computer-implemented inventions as well. There is a risque the the competition is negatively affected by the patent system, becuase of the monopoly it gives. I believe, though, that the gain of the patent system compensates for the risque of imperfections in the market. The free movement for goods, persons, services and capital will probably not be affected if the proposal of the directive about patentibility of computer-implemented invention will get passed.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver processos analíticos e programas computacionais para avaliação da estabilidade global e pré-dimensionamento de pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado com base na garantia da estabilidade global. Em relação à avaliação da estabilidade global, são propostas duas expressões. A primeira está relacionada à expressão do limite do parâmetro de estabilidade aplicada a pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado. A segunda expressão tem o objetivo determinar o deslocamento horizontal de topo de pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado de um pavimento. A expressão do limite alternativo do parâmetro de estabilidade é deduzida a partir dos valores obtidos da relação entre o deslocamento horizontal médio e de topo de 1320 pórticos. A expressão é função do fator de restrição da ligação, contemplando, dessa forma, os efeitos causados pela semirrígidez das ligações no comportamento da estabilidade global desse sistema estrutural. A equação de determinação do deslocamento horizontal de topo de pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado de um pavimento é deduzida com base no método dos deslocamentos. Em relação ao pré-dimensionamento de pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado, são propostos processos analíticos para o pré-dimensionamento dos pilares de pórticos de um pavimento com ligação semirrígida e de pórticos de múltiplos pavimentos com ligações rígidas e articuladas. Os processos analíticos são constituídos pela expressão da rigidez equivalente de estabilidade de pórticos, desenvolvida através das equações do parâmetro de estabilidade e do seu limite alternativo. O trabalho ainda apresenta o Programa de Avaliação da Estabilidade Global e Pré-dimensionamento de Pórticos Planos em Concreto Pré-moldado, denominado PRE-MOLDIM. O programa é constituído por quatro módulos. O primeiro módulo realiza a avaliação da estabilidade global e verificação da deslocabilidade lateral de pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado. O segundo módulo tem o objetivo de definir as dimensões mínimas dos pilares em função da garantia da estabilidade global e do deslocamento lateral admissível. O terceiro módulo define o valor da rigidez das ligações necessário para que sejam atendidos os quesitos de estabilidade global e deslocamento lateral admissível. O quarto módulo realiza o dimensionamento da armadura de continuidade de uma típica ligação viga-pilar em concreto pré-moldado. O dimensionamento da armadura de continuidade é realizado em função da garantia da estabilidade global e do deslocamento lateral admissível de pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado. A aplicação dos processos analíticos e programas computacionais em exemplos comprovaram, de forma satisfatória, o desempenho de suas funções. Os valores obtidos pela expressão alternativa do limite do parâmetro de estabilidade são compatíveis com o limite do coeficiente \'gama\'z. Os valores do deslocamento de topo de pórticos de um pavimento com ligações semirrígidas, obtidos pelo processo analítico, são próximos dos valores obtidos pela simulação numérica. Os pilares pré-dimensionados pelos processos analíticos conseguem garantir de forma satisfatória estabilidade global dos pórticos planos em concreto pré-moldado.
The present work aims to develop analytical processes and computer programs for the evaluation of global stability and preliminary design of plane frames in precast concrete based on ensuring global stability. Regarding the evaluation of global stability, two analytical expressions are proposed. The first is related to the expression of the limit of the stability parameter applied to plane frames in precast concrete. The second expression has the objective to determine the horizontal displacement of the top of plane frames in precast concrete for a floor. The expression of the alternative stability limit of the parameter is deduced from the values obtained from the relationship between the average and the top horizontal displacement of 1320 frames. The expression is a function of the limiting factor of the connection, thus contemplating the effects caused by the semi-rigidity of the connection on the global stability behavior of this structural system. The equation for determining the horizontal displacement of the top of plane frames in precast concrete pavement is obtained based on the displacement method. Regarding the preliminary design of plane frames in precast concrete, analytical procedures are proposed for the preliminary design of column of an one store frame with semi-rigid connection and a multiple store frames with rigid and articulated connections. The analytical processes are constituted by the expression of equivalent stiffness of frame stability, developed through the equations of the stability parameter and its alternative limit. The work also presents the Program of Global Stability Evaluation and Preliminary Design of Plane Frames in Precast Concrete, called PRE-MOLDIM. The program consists of four modules. The first module performs the evaluation of global stability and verification of lateral plane frames displaceability in precast concrete. The second module aims to set minimum dimensions for the pillars due to guarantee the global stability and check the allowable lateral displacement. The third module defines the value of the connections stiffness so the matter of global stability and allowable lateral displacement are satisfied. The fourth module performs the design of continuity armor of a typical beam-column connection in precast concrete. The design armour continuity is made on the basis of ensuring the global stability and lateral displacement allowable plane frames in precast concrete. The application of analytical processes and computer programs in examples proved satisfactorily, the performance of its functions. The values obtained by the alternative expression of the limit of stability parameter are compatible with the limit of the coefficient \'gama\'z. The offset values top venting a pavement with semi-rigid connections, obtained by the analytical process, are close to the values obtained by numerical simulation. The preliminary designed pillars by analytical processes can ensure a satisfactory global stability of the plane frames in precast concrete.

Com a crescente utilização da eletrônica embarcada nos veículos atuais em produção, surgiu uma preocupação sobre os efeitos causados por campos eletromagnéticos em módulos e sistemas eletrônicos. Esses campos podem ser gerados por fontes intencionais, como por exemplo, uma emissora de rádio ou devido a uma fonte não intencional, isto é, um campo gerado pelo funcionamento de outro sistema eletrônico, pelo próprio módulo ou pelo cabeamento utilizado para a conexão elétrica desses dispositivos. Desta forma, o objetivo desse trabalho é avaliar a intensidade de um campo eletromagnético irradiado pelo próprio veículo em seu interior, na região onde geralmente é instalado o rádio/GPS ou sistema multimídia e verificar a possibilidade deste campo interferir no funcionamento do Bluetooth. Alguns ensaios foram conduzidos e os campos irradiados pelo veículo em determinadas situações de funcionamento foram medidos. Ademais, utilizando o software de simulação CST (Computer Simulation Technology), realizou-se uma proposta para a abordagem de modelamento computacional dessas medidas na região do painel de instrumentos do veículo. Os resultados obtidos nos ensaios mostraram que o sistema elétrico do veículo não produz campos ou ruídos eletromagnéticas que possam interferir no funcionamento do Bluetooth. Também verificou-se que o CST pode ser utilizado como uma importante ferramenta de modelagem computacional. Portanto, esse trabalho fornece requisitos para um refinamento dos processos de medição e simulação dos efeitos de EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) e constata que há alternativas para redução de recursos financeiros de forma direta e na agilidade de se obter diferentes cenários de simulação.
With the increasing use of electronics in current production vehicles, a concern about the effects caused by electromagnetic fields in modules and electronic systems emerged. These fields can be generated by intentional sources, such as a broadscast transmitter or due to an unintentional source, i.e., a field generated by the operating system, for itself or other electronic cabling used for the electrical connection of these devices. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the intensity of an electromagnetic field radiated by the vehicle itself within, the region where the radio / GPS or multimedia system is usually installed and consequently the possibility of this field interfered with Bluetooth. Tests were conducted and the radiated fields in certain operating situations were measured. Moreover, using the simulation software CST (Computer Simulation Technology), there was a proposal for early computational modeling of such measures on the vehicle instrument panel area. The test obtained results showed that the vehicle's electrical system does not produce noise or electromagnetic fields that can interfere with existing Bluetooth operation. Furthermore, it was found that the CST could be used as an important tool of computer modeling. Therefore, this work provides requirements for a refinement of current procedures on the measurement and simulations. It points out directions for alternatives on the cost reduction related to these studies, as well as agility different simulation scenarios.

Este trabalho utiliza conceitos de Séries Históricas e Método dos Mínimos Quadrados para realização de estudo evolutivo da Doença de Alzheimer. Com estas técnicas, foram elaboradas a apresentação do panorama atual de um grupo de pacientes e, posteriormente, a previsão de resultados a partir de dados históricos obtidos do exame neuropsicológico denonimado Mini Exame do Estado Mental. Foram geradas trajetórias representadas pela unidade tempo (em anos) de cada um dos pacientes contidos na base de dados. Os resultados sugerem que a modelagem por meio de Séries Históricas e Método dos Mínimos Quadrados pode ser considerada adequada para o acompanhamento e previsão da progressão/estagnação da Doença de Alzheimer.
This study attempted of the concepts of Time Series and the Least Squares Method for accomplishment of evolutive study of Alzheimer¿s disease. With these techniques were development the presentation of the current situation of a group of patients and subsequently the prediction from historical data results of neuropsychological test called Mini Mental State Examination. For each of the patients in the database, it was generated trajectories represented by unit time (in years). The findings suggests that the modeling using Time Series associated with the Least Squares Method can be considered suitable for monitoring and prediction of the progression/stagnation of the Alzheimer¿s disease.

A busca por materiais funcionais que possam desempenhar reparo e/ou regeneracao de Uma interface cérebro-computador (BCI) consiste em um sistema que busca extrair informações da atividade do sistema nervoso central e traduzi-las em comandos de saída, os quais podem eventualmente ser usados para controle de dispositivos assistivos. Mais do que contribuir para o controle de tecnologias assistivas ou reabilitação de pessoas com severas limitações, um sistema BCI pode contribuir para uma melhor compreensão do funcionamento cerebral e dos complexos mecanismos de cognição na medida em que se busca avaliar as variáveis mais relevantes para a eficiente decodificação de tarefas mentais. Entre as possíveis formas de se estudar o funcionamento cerebral destaca-se a quantificação da conectividade funcional, a qual visa estabelecer a similaridade observacional entre diferentes regiões cerebrais. Tal estratégia tem sido utilizada na caracterização e diagnóstico de patologias de grande relevância como depressão, Parkinson, Alzheimer, distúrbios de atenção, entre outras. Tendo isso em vista, este trabalho visou estudar o desempenho de decodificação de tarefas mentais a partir de métricas de grafos (grau, coeficiente de agregação, centralidade de intermediação e centralidade de autovetor) obtidas pela avaliação da conectividade funcional no contexto de sinais eletroencefalográficos na execução de paradigmas clássicos de sistemas BCI definidos pela imagética motora e os potenciais visualmente evocados em regime permanente (SSVEP). Além da análise comparativa entre tais métricas, o presente trabalho apresenta um estudo em relação ao desempenho de decodificação quando diferentes métodos de estimação da matriz de adjacência - forma de representação da conectividade funcional ¿ são utilizados, os quais abrangem as medidas de similaridade definidas pela correlação de Pearson, de Spearman e contagem de recorrência espaço-temporal (STR), sendo a última uma proposta original desta dissertação. Como resultado, para os sinais relacionados à BCIs baseadas em imaginação de movimentos, a STR obteve o melhor desempenho considerando todos os sujeitos e classes, mostrando-se uma possível abordagem para extração de características no contexto de sistemas BCI baseadas em imagética de tarefas. Para os sinais relacionados ao paradigma SSVEP, a decodificação baseada na conectividade funcional alcançou desempenhos satisfatórios, porém inferiores aos da análise em frequência classicamente utilizada neste contexto.
Brain-computer interface (BCI) consists of a system that aims to extract information from the activity of central nervous system and translate it into output commands, which can eventually be used to control assistive devices. More than contributing to the control of assistive technologies or rehabilitation of people with severe limitations, a BCI can also contribute to a better understanding of brain functioning and the complex mechanisms of cognition when evaluating the most relevant variables for the efficient decoding of mental tasks. Among the possible ways to study brain functioning, the functional connectivity quantification deserves careful attention, since it aims to establish the observational similarity between different brain regions. Such strategy has been used in the characterization and diagnosis of pathologies of great relevance such as depression, Parkinson, Alzheimer, attention disorders, among others. This work aimed to study the performance of decoding mental tasks from graph metrics (degree, clustering coefficient, betweenness centrality and eigenvector centrality) obtained by evaluation of functional connectivity in the context of electroencephalographic signals in the execution of classic BCI paradigms defined by motor imagery and steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP). In addition to the comparative analysis of such metrics, this work also presents a study regarding decoding performance when using different methods of adjacency matrix estimation - a functional connectivity representation - which include similarity measures defined by the correlation of Pearson, Spearman and Space-Time Recurrence counting (STR), being the latter an original proposal of this work. As main results, for signals related to motor imagery BCI, STR obtained the best performance considering all the subjects and classes, stablishing a possible approach for feature extraction in the context of motor imagery BCIs. For signals related to the SSVEP paradigm, decoding based on functional connectivity achieved satisfactory performance, but lower than the spectral analysis, classically used in this context.

In recent decades, geographic barriers no longer exist, communication has become faster and affordable and technological tools expanded the power of human information processing, leading to profound economic, social and cultural transformations. Thus, Information and Communication Technologies received critical role in a society that communicates, negotiates and learns "in network", however educational approaches adopted in schools and universities are still lagged. New constructivist teaching techniques such as Project-Based Learning and computational tools like Virtual Learning Environments are researched and experimented, suggesting educational project management through cyberspace as a possible educational approach that promotes the construction of knowledge by the learners themselves collaboratively and overcoming geographical constraints. This dissertation analyzes the Virtual Learning Environment Moodle to support the technique of Project-Based Learning and presents a software architecture for the educational project management like an environment that enables learning of more autonomous and collaborative way.
Nas últimas décadas, barreiras geográficas deixaram de existir, a comunicação tornou-se mais veloz e acessível e ferramentas tecnológicas ampliaram o poder de processamento humano das informações, levando a profundas transformações econômicas, sociais e culturais. Assim, Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação receberam papel fundamental em uma sociedade que se comunica, negocia e aprende "em rede", entretanto abordagens educacionais adotadas nas instituições de ensino ainda se encontram defasadas. Novas técnicas de ensino construtivistas como a Aprendizagem Baseada em Projetos e ferramentas computacionais como os Ambientes Virtuais de Aprendizagem são pesquisadas e experimentadas, apontando a gestão de projetos educativos por meio do ciberespaço como uma possível abordagem educacional capaz de promover a construção do conhecimento pelos próprios aprendizes de forma colaborativa e superando restrições geográficas. Esta dissertação analisa o Ambiente Virtual de Aprendizagem Moodle como suporte à técnica de Aprendizagem Baseada em Projetos e apresenta uma arquitetura de software para a gestão de projetos educativos como um ambiente que permita a aprendizagem de forma mais autônoma e colaborativa.

O ensino de programação na escola é uma tendência mundial. A linguagem de programação Scratch foi desenvolvida especialmente para crianças, pois usa uma interface gráfica fácil sem códigos, apenas blocos parecidos com lego. Pensando nisso, este trabalho tratou da inserção de programação para crianças dos anos iniciais do ensino fundamental de uma escola municipal da cidade de Ponta Grossa. Esta pesquisa usou a abordagem do Construtivismo de Jean Piaget em busca de compreender o desenvolvimento da criança e também a perspectiva construcionista de Seymour Papert, pela relação com computadores e aprendizado. Desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa aplicada com enfoque qualitativo de cunho interpretativo. Foi utilizada como referência para observação as nove habilidades de aprendizagem para o século XXI elencadas por Mitchel Resnick, divididas em três áreas: habilidades ligadas à informação e comunicação; pensamento crítico e resolução de problemas; e autodirecionamento. Durante um no de projeto, as crianças tiveram a oportunidade de aprender conceitos básicos da programação Scratch e realizar atividades que envolveram criatividade, lógica e solução de problemas. Observou-se que a programação Scratch proporcionou às crianças um ambiente motivador, e resultados positivos no sentido de que elas puderam efetivamente desenvolver habilidades ao interagir por conta própria entre si e com o computador.
Teaching programming at school is a worldwide trend. The Scratch programming language was crafted for children, providing a simple graphic interface using Lego-like blocks instead of codes. This work introduced computer programming using Scratch for children in the initial years of elementary education, in a municipal school at Ponta Grossa. Jean Piaget's Constructivism approach was employed with regard to child's development, as well as the constructivist perspective of Seymour Papert given the relationship with computers and learning. The research has applied nature, with a qualitative approach and interpretive character. In order to form an observation baseline it was taken the nine learning skills for the twenty-first century listed by Mitchel Resnick, which are divided into three areas: information and communication skills; critical thinking and problem solving; and self-direction. During one year of project, children had the opportunity to learn the basics of Scratch programming and to engage in activities that involved creativity, logic, and problem solving. It was observed that the use of Scratch created a motivating environment. Positive results were found, in the sense that children could develop skills by interacting with each other and with the computer.

Devido à disseminação de novas tecnologias de varredura (ou escaneamento) 3D, há agora a possibilidade de se realizar uma análise corporal a partir de um modelo tridimensional do paciente. Este trabalho visa criar uma plataforma de avaliação corporal semiautomática para medição de ângulos e distâncias de pontos anatômicos do corpo, juntamente com aplicações que somente informações 3D podem agregar, como a medição do volume do corpo e perímetros de seções corporais, criando-se assim um equipamento completo conhecido como scanner 3D multifuncional. Este equipamento foi construído utilizando 2 sensores Microsoft Kinect aliados à biblioteca de reconstrução ReconstructMe, uma plataforma giratória e um microcontrolador Arduino, criando uma plataforma de escaneamento e software de uso fácil e intuitivo. A plataforma desenvolvida foi utilizada em testes de análise postural de um manequim segundo o protocolo SAPO de avaliação e comparada ao software SAPO. O método de aquisição de modelos tridimensionais foi totalmente automatizado e se mostrou confiável, desde que o usuário permaneça parado durante o processo. O software para avaliações corporais, nomeado AllBodyScan3D, conseguiu reproduzir os métodos propostos e realizar uma avaliação postural de forma ainda não vista em outros trabalhos. A comparação de resultados de avaliação postural do software proposto com o software SAPO mostrou boa correspondência entre os métodos.
Due to the spread of new 3D scanning technologies, there is now the possibility of performing a body analysis from a three-dimensional model of the patient. This work aims to create a semiautomatic body evaluation platform for measuring angles and distances of anatomical points of the body, together with applications that only 3D information can aggregate, such as the measurement of body volume and perimeters of body sections, thus creating a complete equipment known as multifunctional 3D scanner. This equipment was built using 2 Microsoft Kinect sensors together with the ReconstructMe reconstruction library, a turntable and an Arduino microcontroller, creating a scanning platform and an intuitive and easy-to-use software. The developed platform was used in postural analysis tests of a mannequin following the SAPO evaluation protocol and compared to the SAPO software. The method of acquisition of three-dimensional models was fully automated and proved to be reliable, provided that the user remains still during the process. The body evaluation software, named AllBodyScan3D, was able to reproduce the proposed methods and perform a postural evaluation in ways not yet seen in other works. The comparison of postural evaluation results of the proposed software with the SAPO software showed a good match between the methods.

Can we say anything about the specific speeds at which ems can run? Because of brain parallelism, the cost of running an em should be nearly proportional to speed over a wide range of speeds. The upper limit of this proportional-cost em speed range is the “top cheap” speed, that is, the highest speed at which the cost is still nearly proportional to speed. To estimate this speed, we must consider how simulated neurons in em brains might both send faster signals, and more quickly compute what signals to send. Human brain neuron fibers send signals at speeds ranging from 0.5 to 120 meters per second. In contrast, signal speeds in electronic circuit boards today are typically about half the speed of light. If signals in em brains move at electronics speeds, that would be between one million and 300 million times faster than neuron signals. If signal delays are the limiting factor in em brain speed, then this ratio gives an estimate of the maximum speedup possible, at least if em brains have the same spatial size as human brains. proportionally larger speedups are possible if em brains can be made proportionally smaller. Regarding the computation of when to fire a simulated neuron, note that real neurons usually seem to take at least 20 milliseconds to react ( Tovee 1994 ), while even today electronic circuits can switch 10 billion times faster, in one-and-a-half trillionths of a second ( deal et al. 2010 ). A key question is thus: how many electronic circuit cycles does it take to execute a parallel computer program that emulates the firing of a single neuron? For example, if there were an algorithm that could compute a neuron firing in 10 000 of these fastest-known circuit cycles, then an emulation based on this algorithm would run a million times faster than the human brain. As quite complex parallel computer programs can be run in 10 000 cycles, em speedups of at least one million times seem feasible, provided that energy and cooling are cheap enough to profitably allow the use of these fastest electronic circuits. When energy and cooling are more strongly limiting factors, however, the top cheap speed could be slower.

Using the Theory of Planned Behavior, institutional and diffusion theories as theoretical foundations, this study investigates physicians’ attitudes towards and usage of electronic medical records (EMR). Interviews with seventeen physician-residents enrolled in a Family Practice residency program and eight attending physicians in the same clinic showed that most physicians held rather negative attitudes regarding the EMR system. EMR was often times seen as an intrusion in the patient-physician interaction. Other findings relate to how EMR impacts physicians’ time, expertise, and learning, as well as the length (and sometimes the accuracy) of clinical notes. Challenges associated with behavioral control issues such as availability of computers and the physical positioning of computers are shown to be very important in the context of this case. In this organization, physician-residents are required to use EMR because of its mandatory nature, however, if they had a choice or the power, the majority of them would use the paper chart.

<em>Abstract.</em>—Site fidelity and movements of red snapper <em>Lutjanus campechanus </em>off the coast of Texas were estimated from two tagging programs conducted aboard recreational boats. In one program, we tagged 5,614 red snapper at over 200 fishing sites between July 2002 and August 2005 using hook-and-line gear; fishermen and others reported 130 recaptured fish (a 2.3% return rate), 82 of which included location data. About 54% of the recaptured fish had moved, with an average movement of 20.4 km. In the other program, over 9,000 fish were tagged between 1983 and 2006, but only 68 records of fish tagged between 1986 and 2000 could be analyzed due to computer problems. Of the recaptured fish, 60 could be analyzed for movement, and 17 fish (28%) had moved an average of 19.1 km. Important predictors of movement in at least one program or analysis were depth, habitat type, isolation of the initial capture location, time at liberty, and fish size. Red snapper showed a higher probability of movement from capture sites that were in deep water (>40 m), natural rather than artificial structures, and isolated from other sites rather than clustered. Differences in movement from natural versus artificial sites may have been related to red snapper ‘sub-cohort’ behavior, (the tendency of small groups of red snapper to associate together), as the majority of fish that moved were members of sub-cohorts. Larger fish had a higher probability of movement than smaller fish. In one program, fish movements increased with increasing time at liberty, which is similar to past studies on red snapper site fidelity. In the other program, movements decreased with increasing time at liberty, but this was probably a bias caused by the spatial and temporal scale of the recapture effort. Red snapper that moved showed a higher average daily growth rate between capture and recapture than fish that were stationary, suggesting that movements may be beneficial for red snapper. The spatial scale of fish movements in this study, although larger than in other studies without hurricanes or translocation of fish, was still small enough to support the idea that red snapper populations in the northern Gulf of Mexico are relatively isolated, and that there may be a separate demographic stock off Texas.

The huge financial rewards that may be gained from software sales have resulted in computer piracy, an increasing worldwide phenomenon. This situation has posed a challenge to the legislator, who has imposed regulations concerning the protection of software, both at national and international level. The following chapter focuses on the presentation of the current Hellenic legal framework on computer program copyright protection following the implementation of the relative E.U. Directives (Law 2121/1993, as amended). The chapter consists of an introduction focusing on software piracy rates and on the international legal framework of the protection; there is a unit on the right holder, being the subject of software copyright protection; a unit on the field of the protection; a unit on the rights of the author (the moral right, the property right and the resulting powers thereof), focusing on the power of software reproduction and specific cases where the lawful user can carry out acts without the author’s consent; a unit on the consequences of copyright infringement (sanctions at civil, criminal, and administrative level); a unit on the duration of the protection; and finally concluding with final remarks and recommendations.

A primeira linguagem de programação é apresentada como um desafio na computação e em outras áreas do conhecimento. Especificamente para os alunos da computação, de acordo com o relatório da ACM intitulado "Retention in computer science undergraduate programs in the US: Data challenges and promising interventions", sobre retenção em cursos de ciência da computação, a primeira disciplina de programação, chamada de CS1 (Computer Science 1) no relatório, pode influenciar a permanência do aluno em um curso de computação. Neste contexto, a Universidade de Brasília criou um novo Programa de Monitoria para APC (Algoritmos e Programação de Computadores), a primeira disciplina de programação dos cursos de computação. Este novo programa é composto por atendimentos aos sábados, atendimento individual via agendamento, busca ativa pelos alunos com baixo rendimento, e aulões de revisão aos sábados. Neste artigo é apresentado o relato de experiência da primeira edição deste programa que ocorreu no segundo semestre de 2020, onde é descrita a metodologia do programa, análise dos resultados da primeira edição e as lições aprendidas.

The SBC Computer Science Curricula 2017 (RF-CC-17) arranges the competences and skills described in the National Curricular Guidelines for Computing Undergraduate Courses (DCN16) into axial competences. Also, it associates content topics to each axial competence. This essay presents a method to elaborate a Mapping of Compliance and Mobilization (MCM) as a part of a discipline program, based on RF-CC-17. As an example, the method is applied in the elaboration of two distinct programs of introduction to programming, one based on the imperative paradigm and another, object-oriented. Finally, it discusses the advantages of using the method to review pedagogical projects of current courses in compliance to the DCN16.

In this paper, the authors analyse the protection of a computer program in our law. There are numerous dilemmas in the United States of America, a significant representative of the software industry, as well, and also in the EU, concerning the legal framework in which legal protection can be realized. Both copyright protection and patent protection are currently accepted in legal practice. In our law, the basic form of protection of a computer program is copyright. Thus, by defining the notion of a computer program, through analysis of relevant sources of our law and listing the sources of the EU law, and due to hopes of being part of the European concept of protection of a computer program, the authors of this paper endeavour to draw attention to the current state when it comes to legal protection of a computer program by copyright or a patent in our law. The authors, mainly, analyse the subject and the assumptions for copyright protection of a computer program. Considering that copyright protection and patent protection of a computer program exist parallelly in practice, the authors discuss the connection between them too.

There are several scientific studies about the Brazilian teacher training for higher education. In this sense, this paper presents results of an investigation about the initiatives of teacher training in Computer Science graduate programs of federal higher education institutions of North and Northeast of Brazil. For this, one documentary analysis on pedagogical documents of that programs was carried out. It was identified that a few graduate courses (master's and doctoral) have some targeted actions for teacher training, with disciplines on didactics in higher education or activities of supervised teaching internship. The most programs do not have any initiative aimed at teacher training of their students.

The implementation of affirmative actions in public universities is a topic of debate within the Brazilian society, specially regarding the academic performance of students that have been admitted through the quota system. This paper describes a visual analysis process to explore and compare the academic performances of quota and non-quota students from computer-related programs in a public Brazilian university. The results revealed that both failure and dropout rates for quota students are slightly higher than non-quota students in the first terms, but tends to present similar rates at the final terms.

Learning computer programming involves overcoming different obstacles to mature technical, cognitive, and social skills. The literature presents a variety of teaching approaches to engage students in learning how to program. However, there is a lack of works that combine different teaching methods from cognitive and affective dimensions or consider the latter dimension in face-to-face classes consistently. This work presents our experience mixing pair programming, formative feedback, aspects of the affective dimension, and creative programming problems. The preliminary results analysis of three groups (82 students) reveals the contribution of our approach to the pass and fail rates (P = 0.0367 and 0.0329, respectively) corroborated by students’ feedback.

Swirls is a general purpose application for interactive building, deploying, and execution of message-passing parallel programs that address multicluster and multicloud requirements. It is implemented on HPC Shelf, a cloud-based platform for providing HPC services. Swirls enables the communication between MPI programs written in C#, C, C++, and Python across one or more clusters, either on-premise or cloud-based ones. At the current implementation status, The users of Swirls may use clusters formed by virtual machines over Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Studying and applying Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) concepts on Software Engineering (SE) programs is meaningful when society demands more useful, accessible and pleasant software applications to be made. However, teaching HCI is perceived as a challenging task in an interdisciplinary aspect. Therefore, this study aims to understand what Brazilian SE undergraduate students are being taught on HCI courses. In order to accomplish it, we applied a content analysis methodology on 21 distinct syllabi from 15 universities, which resulted on the categorization of 28 teaching topics. The outcome of this work allow us to visualize the most HCI concepts seen on Brazilian SE programs: Design, Interaction Styles & Paradigms, System Evaluation, and Usability. Moreover, we presented discussions related to the HCI knowledge being offered on SE undergraduate programs.
