Abstract. Floods in the city of Zürich (Switzerland) were already reported in the 13th century. The most severe threat are floods from the Sihl river (336 km2, including also an hydropower reservoir) with peaks exceeding 350 m3 s−1. An assessment using a rainfall-runoff model has been completed to evaluate extreme flood situations by combining 18 precipitation scenarios with different initial conditions. These scenarios identified deficits for the safety of Zürich. For the improvement of flood management several measures are possible. Crash-tests with 41 472 combinations of measures and scenarios have been evaluated. According to the results, the spillway channel option in the downstream reach of the Sihl is a promising structural measure to ensure flood relief for Zürich. Lowering the artificial reservoir lake before the event consistently increases safety also in the upstream part, but causes financial losses in terms of hydroelectricity. The combination of measures can lead to an optimal safety also in case of unfavourable initial conditions. Pending questions concern the costs, political decisions and the environmental sustainability.

Анотація:

This study examines expats and their families in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland. Their reasons and choices regarding integrating (or not) into the Swiss society, educational strategies for their children and possessed capital assets upon arrival in Switzerland is the three problem statements being explored. Pierre Bourdieu’s´ sociology is the theoretical framework for this study – the concept of different types of capital and educational strategies are especially important in this regard. Interviews with female expats whose children attend the Inter-Community School Zürich (ICSZ) were conducted and the stated purpose of the study was obtained. This study concludes that these expat families choose the international grounds rather than the local, due to language barriers. The language makes it hard for both themselves and their children to integrate and/or feel part of the Swiss community and society. The expats are integrated into the international ´expat-bubble´ rather than the Swiss society or community, and the reason is due to the lack of time spent with the local people, not mastering the language and/or not being interested enough to make the effort to integrate. This specific group of expats can be seen as an ´international elite- group´, based on their assets of capital, their cosmopolitan lifestyle and international social grounds. These expats value their capitals highly but is not stating that one specific capital is more needed than another; all their assets are of worth and they do not consciously use a specific capital for their integration.

Lake-dwellings in the northern Alpine region are renowned for their extraordinary organic preservation. In addition to organic remains, thousands of ceramic sherds are also recovered. This paper addresses ceramic sherds from the Late Bronze Age site Zürich-Alpenquai, and assesses over 2000 sherds for indications of erosion and abrasion in addition to quantifying sherd size and plotting the spatial distribution of these factors. Recording such wear patterns can provide indications of deposition practices in addition to environmental conditions pre- and post-deposition. In this manner the study of ceramic remains from wetland sites for abrasion can complement environmental studies addressing conditions at the time of artefact deposition, and contribute to discussions of influences for lake-settlement abandonment.

AbstractThe European-Japanese Cerebrovascular Congress originally started as a Swiss-Japanese joint conference on cerebral aneurysm. The Congress was held in Zürich, Switzerland, from 5–7 May 2001 with Prof. Y. Yonekawa of Zürich and Prof. Y. Sakurai of Sendai as the presidents.Three years later, in July of 2004, the second meeting was held at Zürich again with wide-ranging conference topics on cerebral stroke surgery.The third meeting at Zürich in 2006 was the key congress for future development. The conference was expanded to the European-Japanese Joint Conference for Stroke Surgery.As the year of 2006 was the 70th Anniversary of the Department of Neurosurgery, University Hospital Zürich, Prof. Krayenbühl, Prof. Yasargil, and Prof. Yonekawa introduced the impressive history of the Department of Neurosurgery at the conference.At the fourth European-Japanese Joint Conference on Stroke Surgery we moved from Zürich to the Nordic city of Helsinki, with Prof. Juha Hernesniemi as the conference president.The fifth joint conference was held at Düsseldolf am Rein with Prof. Hans-Jakob Steiger as the Conference president.The sixth conference, named “The European-Japanese Stroke Surgery Conference” (EJSSC), was held in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Professor Luca Regli and Prof. Gabriel Rinkel were the conference presidents.The seventh European-Japanese Stroke Surgery Conference (EJSSC) was held in Verona, Italy with the presidents Prof. Alberto Pasqualin and Prof. Giampietro Pinna.The eighth European-Japanese Cerebrovascular Congress (EJCVC) came back to Zürich in the year 2016 with Prof. Luca Regli as the president.The ninth European-Japanese Cerebrovascular Congress (EJCVC) was held in the historical room of Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda Milan, Italy, with Prof. Marco Cenzato as the president.The tenth European-Japanese Cerebrovascular Congress (EJCVC) will be held in Kyoto. It will be the first meeting of the EJCVC in Japan.Publication of the proceeding books of the conference as supplements of ACTA Neurochirurgica is one of the main reasons that we have been able to continue this conference for almost 20 years. AbstractIn this chapter, the author provides the reader with a useful description of Salutogenesis meeting places. These are the Society for Theory and Research on Salutogenesis (STARS) and the Global Working Group on Salutogenesis (GWG-Sal) of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE). The author also provides information about the Center on Salutogenesis at the University of Zürich in Switzerland. The Center is the host organization of both meeting places. The key message of this chapter is that one’s involvement in STARS will extend one’s professional network, open new avenues for research and publishing, and help achieve a vision of “salutogenesis for thriving societies.” The reader wanting to connect more directly to a global salutogenesis network will find this chapter to be of great practical value.

As conventional cadastral maps only show building perimeters, they contain no information about the city’s internal structure—about the complex interplay of architecture and its socio-economical use. Thus urban planning seems to spare little thought for what really takes place inside the buildings lining a street, although we perfectly know that the potentials of ground floor use and the structure of the correlating public street space are directly related. The Urban Parterre Modelling UPM-method refers to the city’s “parterre” as a holistic urban system: it covers both built-up and non-built-up areas. Thus street, ground floor and courtyard are treated as entity, so that their interrelations can come to light. Technically the method represents the merging of a common 3D-city-model and a Comprehensive Ground Plan Survey CGPS—a researching technique used in the 1960s until the 1990s (mostly in Italy and Switzerland). This new urban research method has been developed and tested in a pilot study by means of an in depth exploration of an exemplary historical street in Vienna. In September 2015 a new four years research program was financed by the Austrian Science Fund (Austria's central funding organization for basic research, FWF) and launched at the Department of Urban Design at Vienna University of Technology. Within this operational framework a variety of different street-level environments in Vienna are being examined. Given this perspective the paper is therefore addressing the following issues: How was the Viennese ground level originally used? Which urban functions were located there? What are the (historical) interrelations between public space and the life inside buildings? In 1964, Dr. Barrows first introduced the standardized patients, who are individuals trained to imitate the pathological symptoms of the real patients, and involved them in teaching and clinical skills assessment for healthcare education. In recent decades, the application of the virtual patient has been rapidly grown and has been widely used in clinical or educational practice among residents, surgeons, or other medical professionals because the virtual patient is cost-effective and time-efficient [1]. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collaborated with the Foundation of Research on Information Technologies in Society (IT’IS Foundation, Zürich, Switzerland) to produce a virtual family, which is a set of anatomical computer-aided design (CAD) models of adults and children [2, 3], and those CAD models are used in electromagnetic, thermal, and computer fluid dynamics simulations. However, the meaning of virtual patients or models has varied across the recent years and more and more researchers tried to categorize the terminology of virtual patients. In general, virtual patients can be classified into seven major types including: case presentation, interactive patient scenarios, virtual patient game, high fidelity software simulation, human standardized patients, high fidelity manikins, and virtual standardized patients [4]. The virtual patients discussed in this study can be classified as interactive patient scenarios, whose application includes clinical reasoning, surgical planning, and disease diagnosis.

<p>The historic building "Du Pont" in Zurich, Switzerland, was constructed between 1912 and 1913 by the Swiss architects Haller & Schindler and it is listed as a cultural heritage object, including not only the Art Deco façade, but also the ground-breaking structure of reinforced concrete. The building includes several structural particularities, such as the slender, reinforced concrete, one-way ribbed slabs, a reinforced concrete truss structure in the roof hanging four floors and three transfer beams on the ground floor diverting the loads from the seven upper floors. This paper presents a detailed description of the different strengthening measures required to allow a more flexible use of the existing floors with larger live and dead loads, and to fulfil the current provisions of the Swiss Standards (SIA). The main objective of the proposed restoration and strengthening measures is to minimize the interventions as much as possible and preserve the original structural system. Of particular interest is the innovative solution adopted for the existing ribbed slabs. The required increase of resistance is obtained through a thin 40 mm overlay of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) above the carefully prepared existing slab. Due to the significance of the building and the particular characteristics of the existing concrete, experimental tests were conducted. Four specimens of the ribbed slabs were extracted from the building, strengthened on site with UHPFRC and transported to the structural laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ), where the tests were conducted. The excellent results confirmed the suitability of the proposed strengthening solution through UHPFRC, setting a milestone for future restorations of these particular structures.</p>
