Purpose This paper aims to explain the implementation procedure of DSpace at the Library of Independent University, Bangladesh. This paper shows how DSpace is promoting open educational resources (OER) movement and demonstrates the ease of implementing DSpace in an institution. Moreover, the purpose of this paper is to encourage library professionals to participate in the OER movement by implementing DSpace in their libraries. Design/methodology/approach The requirements for implementing DSpace have been shown in this paper. It also describes the system model of an academic repository (DSpace)/digital library (DL). In addition, the paper describes the legal issues for submitting an item in DSpace and self-submission process of an item as well as shows impact of DSpace on OER. Findings Open source software and Open Access Institutional Repository software has a fundamental role in promoting OER. DSpace is perfect for building a DL or an institutional repository in libraries, especially for developing country libraries because this demands low cost and it is easy to implement in libraries as well as is user-friendly. Originality/value This paper will help to understand the role of the library community and librarians about OER. It will also show the impact of DL on OER. In addition, this paper encourages librarians to participate in OER movement.

DSpace, a free and open-source software (FOSS) provides the digital platform for building collections of an institution. Due to the lack of the skills to install and configure DSpace, librarians are incapable to conduct it even after the awareness about it. Identifying challenges about DSpace installation is vital to increase its use by librarians. Hence, it aims to explore the understanding of DSpace installation among librarians and to identify aspects of their experiences and feelings while installing DSpace. Librarians' experiences and feelings are important for accepting the software. Librarians were interviewed during the training program conducted on digital library technology from December 2020 to January 2021. Two groups were distinguishing from each other: one is with a library science background and another is with computer science and engineering background. The second group aswas self-sustained to install DSpace, once they got the guidelines for installation. Their views were reflected with the code terms status, exploration, feeling, activities, preferences, and inadequacy. Through their experiences, the aspects of challenges are the less experience of using the command line in computer use, the unavailability of teaching courses on Linux operating system in Library and Information Science (LIS) education, and the lack of self-exploration habits. Practice to Linux commands, incorporate the Linux in the Library Science course, self-exploration, and consistent effort will help librarians in installing DSpace by themselves. Finally, librarians should internalize their goal to act as the administrator for the DSpace, not only as of the operator.

Digital library making has been basic requirements for the modern libraries. Instead of documents in papers, information is acquired and managed in some digital platform. One of the digital library platforms is DSpace, started in 2002. The collection of digital documents in DSpace is named DSpace repository. The main collection in DSpace repository is institutionally generated digital documents; hence, it is also synonymously termed as institutional repository. This study explored the existing Institutional Repository System (IRS) that was built in DSpace software in Nepal. Nepal, in South Asia, developed IRS in 2009. Literature suggested extensive studies about IRS in other South Asian countries, while Nepal was reported rarely. Moreover, Nepal was described as scanter than reality. There are nine IRS built-in DSpace in Nepal, enriching the collection from 101 to 15218. Except for three IRS, all other five IRS have their customized userinterface. They are on the way to improving their collection. Open Learning Education (OLE) Nepal has the highest collection and has diversified types of collections for kids. It is developed as Children's Digital Library. Except for three IRS, all are academic. So, these IRS have accommodated documents for academic purposes. They served students, teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Introduction:One of the forms of dissemination of technical memory occurs through Digital Libraries and Digital Repositories. These information environments can be developed and customized from various software. In Brazil, DSpace is one of the main systems used in the creation of Digital Libraries and Institutional Repositories, thus providing opportunities for the representation, dissemination, access and use of the information made available from these tools. Given such relevance, the information available in these information environments needs to be of quality, in order to ensure numerous contributions to organizations, as well as to their users.Objective:Considering the need to ensure the quality of the information available in Digital Libraries, this study aims to propose a model to foster the improvement of the quality of technical memory deposits in Digital Libraries implemented from the DSpace. Methodology:This is a qualitative and descriptive study, which makes use of the bibliographic survey technique in national and international databases.Results:Based on the bibliographic survey it was possible to propose the model of evaluation of the quality of deposits in Digital Libraries developed from the DSpace, thus presenting contributions to improve the qualityof the information available in these environments so relevant to the dissemination of knowledge. Conclusion:The proposed model will allow interested parties to evaluate the quality of deposits made in Digital Libraries, especially those created through the DSpace software.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the technical comparison on SLiMS (Senayan Library Management System) software with Eprints and DSpace, so it will be proved technically whether SLiMS (Senayan Library Management System) can meet the criteria and standards as institutional repository software or not? . The research methodology used is an experimental approach in which researchers conduct direct experiments of SLiMS, Eprints and DSpace software starting from the installation stage, data entry, IP public provision to perform comparative analysis of the technical features of the three software. The results show that the SLiMS software (Senayan Library Management System) can meet the criteria and standards as the institutional repository software, because SLiMS (Senayan Library Management System) features the main required of an institutional repository software that functions as an asset management system digital collecting, preserving, preserving and publishing or disseminating scientific work of academic research of a college.

There are different types of this services are available in an online environment such as google scholar, research gateway, ebsco, summon, exlibris primo, worldcat and etc. This is very popular service and enable customization in different fields such as end user accounts, branding, embedding your chat service, turning off and on certain resources, custom search boxes, embedded widgets, facets modifications, language choices, and content and underlying technology infrastructure philosophies may vary, but the results are largely the same. Altmetrics is a part of discovery services to developing any online based institutional digital repository for enhancing the library and information services among the research scholars, users, students, and teachers also. The objective of this paper is to explore and access the altmetrics enabled services from the DSpace user interface for fulfilling the discovery services in an integrated digital library system. Apart from this it also describe some well-known altmetrics enabled tools available in an online environment. Now, this integrated framework is very helpful for each and every sphere of institutional digital repository for designing and developing the altmetrics enabled discovery services through an open source software DSpace.

Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology has been developing the Single Open Information Archive (UOIA) to merge all digital full-text resources created or acquired by the Library. The authors examine the issues of interoperability when exchanging metadata between UOIA built on library automation software and open archives using OAI-PMH technology for metadata acquisition. Interoperability in information exchange between different ALIS is provided, for example, through applying SRU/SRW protocol and metadata scheme, while metadata exchange between OA repositories is provided mainly within Dublin Core (DC) scheme. ALIS – OA metadata transmission with transformation into DC results in information loss and prevents unambiguous reverse transformation.For a long time, DSpace has been the most popular software for open digital repositories. This product enables OAI-PMH metadata acquisition in DC and Qualified DC (QDC) formats, and supports Object Reuse and Exchange (ORE) standard, which enables to describe aggregated resources. ORE in DSpace enables to collect not only metadata but also connected files and to receive other connected data provided by importing source. DSpace uses rather simple ORE format based on Atom XML that allows binding several files of different functionality with RDF-triplets.The OAI-PMH software connector is designed for RNPLS&T SOIA and enables to present metadata in DC, QDC, MARC21, and ORE formats, which supports interoperability in information exchange with OA repositories with DSpace software. Beside metadata transmission, transmission of various data types is possible, e. g. document text or license information. Further development is to expand format structure to represent associated data, in particular using RDF.

Purpose – India occupies second position among the countries that have adopted DSpace open source software for institutional repositories (IRs)/digital libraries (DLs). The purpose of this paper is to examine the reasons for DSpace being preferred over other software. It inspects various instances of Indian web-based DSpace systems including the nature and growth of collection, the geographical distribution of DSpace systems and the types of institutions that adopt and maintain DSpace. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from the official website of DSpace, Google search and from online discussion forums during July 2013 to January 2014. The 132 Indian DSpace links provided in the official DSpace website were examined. Further search was carried out on Google to identify Indian IRs and DLs that are not listed by the official website. A list of Indian DSpace websites prepared by the authors was sent to the online discussion forums for further updating. An online directory of Indian DSpace websites was created using WordPress which provided for the adding of comments. The study is limited to the web-based DSpace IRs and DLs in India. Findings – The majority of the Indian IRs and DLs listed on the official website of DSpace are not visible on the internet. Many links lead to institution websites, commercial websites and personal pages of authors. Out of 132 DSpace links, only 55 are visible on the internet to search and use. Indian libraries prefer DSpace over EPrints, Fedora and Greenstone. Many institutions could not maintain continuity of their DSpace systems in the online environment. Institutions having more funding are maintaining web-based DSpace systems. The size, economic conditions, rate of literacy and number of universities in an Indian state do not influence the maintenance of digital systems. Academic institutions involving universities, technical institutions and colleges lead in the adoption and maintenance of web-based DSpace in India. Private universities and colleges have adopted DSpace for IR/DL. Public libraries constitute a minimum percentage of web-based DSpace instances. Indian courts and Parliament have adopted DSpace. Shodhganga, the Indian ETD project, is running on DSpace. Originality/value – This is the first paper examining the adoption of DSpace by Indian libraries with a focus on online visibility and the strength of collection. It can be used to understand the pattern of technology adoption by Indian libraries over the years.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the technical features of the Ganesha Digital Library (GDL) application with DSpace and Eprints, so that it will be proved technically whether the GDL application can meet the standards and criteria as the application software repository institution ?. Using experimental approach research methods by installing GDL, DSpace and Eprints application to further analyze and compare the technical features of the three applications. The results show that GDL application meet standards and criteria as institutional repository application, since they have most of the technical features of institutional repositories including the features of the OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting); has a dublincore metadata standard; and has been licensed to open source (General Public License) GPL that is needed for the utilization, use and development of institutional repository applications according to the needs of a college institution.

Softwares simply their tasks and saves a lot of precious time which can be utilized in managing other important issues. Libraries also need softwares if they want to create a parallel digital library with features which we may not find in a traditional library. There are several open source softwares available to create a digital library. For this, firstly the library professionals should be aware of the advantages of open source software and should involve in their development. They should have basic knowledge about the selection, installation and maintenance. Open source software requires a greater degree of computing responsibility than commercial software. Digitization involves huge money to create and maintain and the OSS appears to be a means to reduce it. Among these, DSpace and Greenstone are becoming more popular in India and abroad. This paper deals with the comparison of these two popular OSS from various points of view. The comparative table may help the professionals who are planning to create a digital library.

Last year at the ECDL 2004 conference, we reported some initial progress and experiences developing DSpace as an open source community-driven project [8], particularly as seen from an institutional manager’s viewpoint. We also described some challenges and issues. This paper describes the progress in addressing some of those issues, and developments in the DSpace open source community. We go into detail about the processes and infrastructure we have developed around the DSpace code base, in the hope that this will be useful to other projects and organisations exploring the possibilities of becoming involved in or transitioning to open source development of digital library software. Some new challenges the DSpace community faces, particularly in the area of addressing required system architecture changes, are introduced. We also describe some exciting new possibilities that open source development brings to our community.

In todayâ s ever-changing world of technology and information, a growing number of organizations and universities seek to store digital documents in an online, accessible manner. These digital library (DL) repositories are powerful systems that allow institutions to store their digital documents while permitting interaction and collaboration among users in their organizations. Despite the continual work on DL systems that can produce out-of-the-box online repositories, the installation, configuration, and customization processes of these systems are still far from straightforward.

Motivated by the arduous process of designing digital library instances; installing software packages like DSpace and Greenstone; and configuring, customizing, and populating such systems, we have developed an XML-based model for specifying the nature of DSpace digital libraries. The ability to map out a digital library to be created in a straightforward, XML-based way allows for the integration of such a specification with other DL tools. To make use of DL specifications for DSpace, we create a DL generator that uses these models of digital library systems to create, configure, customize, and populate DLs as specified. We draw heavily on previous work in understanding the nature of digital libraries from the 5S framework for digital libraries. This divides the concerns of digital libraries into a complex, formal representation of the elements that are basic to any minimal digital library system including Streams, Structures, Spaces, Scenarios, and Societies. We reflect on this previous work and provide a fresh application of the 5S framework to practical DL systems. Given our specification and generation process, we draw conclusions towards a more general model that would be suitable to characterize any DL platform with one specification.

We present this DSpace DL specification language and generator as an aid to DL designers and others interested in easing the specification of DSpace digital libraries. We believe that our method will not only enable users to create DLs more easily, but also gain a greater understanding about their desired DL structure, software, and digital libraries in general.

In this paper we describe DSpace™, an open source system that acts as a repository for digital research and educational material produced by an organization or institution. DSpace was developed during two years’ collaboration between the Hewlett-Packard Company and MIT Libraries. The development team worked closely with MIT Libraries staff and early adopter faculty members to produce a ‘breadth-first’ system, providing all of the basic features required by a digital repository service. As well as functioning as a live service, DSpace is intended as a base for extending repository functionality, particularly to address long-term preservation concerns. We describe the functionality of the current DSpace system, and briefly describe its technical architecture. We conclude with some remarks about the future development and operation of the DSpace system.

As more and more output from research institutions is born digital, a means for capturing and preserving the results of this investment is required. To begin to understand and address the problems surrounding this task, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories collaborated with MIT Libraries over two years to develop DSpace, an open source institutional repository software system. This paper describes DSpace in the context of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model. Particular attention is given to the preservation aspects of DSpace, and the current status of the DSpace system with respect to addressing these aspects. The reasons for various design decisions and trade-offs that were necessary to develop the system in a timely manner are given, and directions for future development are explored. While DSpace is not yet a complete solution to the problem of preserving digital research output, it is a production-capable system, represents a significant step forward, and is an excellent platform for future research and development.

When a crisis occurs, information flows rapidly in the Web through social media, blogs, and news articles. The shared information captures the reactions, impacts, and responses from the government as well as the public. Later, researchers, scholars, students, and others seek information about earlier events, sometimes for cross-event analysis or comparison. There are very few integrated systems which try to collect and permanently archive the information about an event and provide access to the crisis information at the same time. In this thesis, we describe the CTRnet Digital Library and Archive which aims to permanently archive crisis event information by using Archive-It services and then provide access to the archived information by using LucidWorks Big Data software. Through the Big Data (LWBD) software, we take advantage of text extraction, clustering, similarity, annotation, and indexing services and build digital libraries with the generated metadata that will be helpful for the system stakeholders to locate information about an event. Through this study, we collected data for 46 crises events using Archive-It. We built a CTRnet DL prototype and its services for the ``Boston Marathon Bombing" collection by using the components of LucidWorks Big Data. Running LucidWorks Big Data on a 30 node Hadoop cluster accelerates the sub-workflows processing and also provides fault tolerant execution. LWBD sub-workflows, ``ingest" and ``extract", processed the textual data present in the WARC files. Other sub-workflows ``kmeans", ``simdoc", and ``annotate" helped in grouping the search-results, deleting the duplicates and providing metadata for additional facets in the CTRnet DL prototype, respectively.

AbstractRecommender systems that support us in our everyday lives are becoming more precise and accurate in terms of the appropriateness of recommendations to users’ needs – with the result that the user often follows these recommendations. This is mainly due to the filtering methods and various algorithms used. In our paper, we will look specifically at the recommender systems on gaming platforms. These consist of different components: a shopping component, a streaming component and a social media component. The recommender systems of these components, when considered individually, have certain characteristics in terms of the machine learning and filtering methods used, which are mixed by combining them on one platform. As a result, it is unclear which of the information collected about the user at any time is lost and disappears into obscurity, and what information is used to generate recommendations. The frequently discussed “black box” problem exacerbates at this point and becomes a “black hole.” With the interests of platform users, platform operators, and software developers in mind, we examine the legal provisions that have been established to address this opaqueness: transparency obligations. Derived from the Digital Services Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act, we present various legally valid solutions to address the “black hole” problem and also lead them to practical suggestions for implementation.

AbstractIn this work, a computer vision algorithm for the detection and recognition of 2D kinematic diagrams, both from paper schemes and digital files, was developed. Furthermore, it runs even with hand-made diagrams, which can be correctly identified. The algorithm is mainly based on the use of the free computer vision library OpenCV, being able to identify each element of the kinematic diagram, its connection with the other elements and store its pixels, which will allow in future research the implementation of motion in the sketches themselves. Allowed elements are revolute, prismatic, fixed, cylindrical and rigid joints and rigid bars. The main applications of this work are focused on the teaching world, communication of ideas in a quickly and graphical way and for fast and preliminary designs of new mechanisms as people can draw the diagram in a Tablet or paper and simulate it in real time, avoiding the necessity to learn how to operate a specialized simulation software and the time it takes to prepare the virtual model and obtain its results.

In the last years, a great number of digital library and digital repository systems have been developed by individual organizations, mostly universities, and given to the public as open-source software. The advantage of having many choices becomes a great headache when selecting a digital library (DL) system for a specific organization. To make the decision easier, five well-known and extensively used systems that are publicly available using an open source license are compared, namely DSpace, Fedora, Greenstone, Keystone, and EPrints. Each of them have been thoroughly studied based on basic characteristics and system features emphasizing multiple and heterogeneous digital collection support. Results are summarized in a score table. Cases for which each of these systems is considered as the most suitable are proposed.

In this sense, the emphasis is on capitalizing on the digital library (http://www.moldavica.bnrm.md/) and the national thematic repository (http://moldlis.bnrm.md/), as open platforms that can ensure a sustainable infrastructure for seamless access to free knowledge, digital content and information resources. In this sense, the author describes NLRM's experience in using 2 digital platforms / software (DSpace and Greenstone) that are part of the open source domain and represent computer systems capable of managing, transmitting, publishing, modifying and downloading digital content in various forms and formats of accessibility. The paper aims to promote a favorable environment for further support of the open movement by the NLRM by committing to disseminating the results of research and successful experiences in the field of Library and Information Sciences (BSI), by publishing articles in the journal „Magazin Bibliologic” and placing in National Thematic Repository of Library Science and Information Sciences of the Republic of Moldova (MOLDLIS) (http://moldlis.bnrm.md/).

Продвижение общества к цифровому инициировало кардинальные изменения в принципах и подходах к науке и образованию. Одним из важных аспектов продвижения по этому пути является открытый доступ к результатам научных исследований, который может быть реализован с помощью технологий и на программной платформе открытых архивов. Внедрение открытых архивов в библиотеке научнообразовательной организации требует решения множества возникающих проблем, таких как выбор и дополнение схем данных, пакетный обмен данными между системой автоматизации библиотеки и цифровым архивом, вопросы аутентификации и авторизации пользователей, лицензирование цифровых документов и коллекций и т.д. Некоторые из этих проблем относительно легко решают сетевые службы и сервисы, активно развивающиеся в процессе формирования инфраструктуры открытой науки в сети Интернет и являющиеся ее неотъемлемой частью. Подключение их к цифровому архиву, а также исследование возможностей и особенностей их функционирования является актуальной задачей. Рассмотрены некоторые полезные для библиотек службы и сервисы, интеграция с которыми может быть реализована средствами программной платформы DSpace 6.3, а также особенности их настройки и работы. The advancement of society to the digital future has initiated dramatic changes in the principles and approaches to science and education. One of the important aspects of moving along this path is open access to the results of scientific research, which can be implemented using technology and the open archives software platform. The introduction of open archives in the library of a scientific and educational organization requires solving many problems that arise, such as the selection and correction of data schemes, the batch exchange of data between the library automation system and the digital archive, issues of authentication and user authorization, licensing of digital documents and collections, and etc. Some of these problems are relatively easily solved by network services that are actively developing in the process of creating an infrastructure of open science on the Internet and being its integral part. Connecting its to a digital archive, as well as exploring the possibilities and features of their functioning, is an urgent task. Some services useful for libraries are considered, integration with which can be implemented using the DSpace 6.3 software platform, as well as the features of their configuration and operation.

Este artigo tem como objetivo a apresentação do uso dos repositórios digitais, com o intuito do desenvolvimento de um ambiente informacional capaz de fazer com que o conhecimento gerado pelo Grupo de Pesquisa – Novas Tecnologias em Informação do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação da UNESP de Marília seja preservado no tempo e disponibilizado a todos os interessados de maneira eficiente e, a partir deste estudo, demonstrar o uso de repositórios digitais na gestão de documentos digitais em empresas e instituições de ensino e pesquisa.

A framework for optimizing rotor blade airfoil shape is presented. The framework uses two digital workflows created within the Galaxy Simulation Builder (GSB) software package. The first is a workflow enabling the automated creation of a surrogate model for predicting airfoil performance coefficients. An accurate surrogate model for the rapid generation of airfoil coefficient tables has been developed using linear interpolation techniques that is based on C81Gen and ARC2D CFD codes. The second workflow defines the rotor blade optimization problem using GSB and the Dakota numerical optimization library. The presented example uses a quasi-Newton optimization algorithm to optimize the tip region of the UH-60A main rotor blade with respect to vehicle performance. This is accomplished by morphing the blade tip airfoil shape for optimum power, subject to a constraint on the maximum pitch link load.

Bendigo, where the traditional owners are the Dja Dja Wurrung people, has capitalised on its European historical roots. Its striking architecture owes much to its Gold Rush past which has also given it a diverse cultural heritage. The creative industries, while not well recognised as such, contribute well to the local economy. The many festivals, museums and library exhibitions attract visitors from the metropolitan centre of Victoria especially. The Bendigo Creative Industries Hub was a local council initiative while the Ulumbarra Theatre is located within the City’s 1860’s Sandhurst Gaol. Many festivals keep the city culturally active and are supported by organisations such as Bendigo Bank. The Bendigo Writers Festival, the Bendigo Queer Film Festival, The Bendigo Invention & Innovation Festival, Groovin the Moo and the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival are well established within the community. A regional accelerator and Tech School at La Trobe University are touted as models for other regional Victorian cities. The city has a range of high quality design agencies, while the software and digital content sector is growing with embeddeds working in agriculture and information management systems. Employment in Film, TV and Radio and Visual Arts has remained steady in Bendigo for a decade while the Music and Performing Arts sector grew quite well over the same period.
