Are drags shows modern minstrel shows for straight party girls? Can defense of values be compromised for special occasions? In this work of philosophical short story fiction, Hannah is getting married and off to Miami for a girl’s weekend bachelorette party. Her longtime gay friend Kyle, is not invited. Hannah’s mother has budgeted $100,000 for the wedding and bachelorette party on the condition Kyle not be invited. Hannah’s wedding is her special day, the money will make it perfect, so she has her bridesmaid (who should have been Kyle!) message Kyle, last minute, to uninvite him. Of course, she supports, gay rights, but not at the cost of her special day. While in Miami the over-the-top bachelorette group goes to a gay night club, then for mimosa and a drag show the next morning to recover. Kyle tried to contact Hannah to talk to her about her reasoning, but she refuses to pick up the phone, so he flies to Miami and confronts her at the drag show about being a fair-weather liberal, in spectacular fashion.

The photosynthetic bacteria Rhodobacter capsulatus and Rhodospirillum rubrum regulate their nitrogenase activity by the reversible ADP-ribosylation of nitrogenase Fe-protein in response to ammonium addition or darkness. This regulation is mediated by two enzymes, dinitrogenase reductase ADP-ribosyl transferase (DRAT) and dinitrogenase reductase activating glycohydrolase (DRAG). Recently, we demonstrated that another photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, appears to have no draTG genes, and no evidence of Fe-protein ADP-ribosylation was found in this bacterium under a variety of growth and incubation conditions. Here we show that four different strains of Rba. sphaeroides are incapable of modifying Fe-protein, whereas four out of five Rba. capsulatus strains possess this ability. Introduction of Rba. capsulatus draTG and nifHDK (structural genes for nitrogenase proteins) into Rba. sphaeroides had no effect on in vivo nitrogenase activity and on nitrogenase switch-off by ammonium. However, transfer of draTG from Rba. capsulatus was sufficient to confer on Rba. sphaeroides the ability to reversibly modify the nitrogenase Fe-protein in response to either ammonium addition or darkness. These data suggest that Rba. sphaeroides, which lacks DRAT and DRAG, possesses all the elements necessary for the transduction of signals generated by ammonium or darkness to these proteins.Key words: nitrogenase regulation, nitrogenase modification, photosynthetic bacteria.

The results take the form of maps of drags from each valley wall, of normal forces laterally and longitudinally, and of basal drag. Special challenges in the calculation are the numerical gridding of velocity (ensuring that unreasonable short-wavelength features do not develop in the calculation) and inference of ice thicknesses where there are no data.The results show important variations in basal drag. For the floating part, basal drag is near zero, as expected. Within the grounded part, longitudinal components of basal drag are very variable, reaching 300 kPa, with a dominant wavelength of 10 km. Generally these drag maxima correlate with maxima in driving stress, and the across-glacier component of basal drag is usually small. An important exception occurs in the center of the grounded part of the glacier, where the flow shows major deviations from the axis of the valley.Results also show that side drag is roughly constant at 250 kPa along both margins of the glacier, tension from the ice shelf is about 100 kPa, and tension in the grounded part cycles between 250 and 150kPa. Calculated deep velocities are too large and this is attributed to deficiencies in the conventional isotropic flow law used.

The soft surface of birds and aquatic organisms in the nature can effectively reduce the drag. Inspired by the fact,in this paper, an attempt is made to stick silicone rubber soft surface on the surfaces of NACA 4412 and NACA 6409 airfoils. The drags, lifts and lift-drag ratios of airfoils with soft and rigid surfaces in 5 different thickness were compared through wind tunnel test under the condition of α = 0 °. The results show that most of the bionic soft surfaces play the role of reducing the aerodynamic drag, and also increasing the lift at the same time, in which the soft surface of 0.6mm had the most significant effect of drag reduction and lift increasing.

The article presents studies into aerodynamic processes in very long longwall panels. The computations in ANSYS using the finite volume method show that air drag in longwalls varies versus position of the longwall mining system in the panel. Enhancement of ventilation efficiency in longwalls requires reduction in air drag. The longwall air drag is governed by the air drags of the powered roof support and cutter-loader. The latter have very large dimensions which are technologically unchangeable. For this reason, it is necessary to ensure forced air flow to by-pass the cutter-loader in the longwall panel. The estimate of advantages of the proposed method for the air drag reduction in very long longwall panels is presented. The method consists in increasing air flow rate in the longwall with the help of an axial jet fan mounted on the cutter-loader.

Condragulations, fierce, realness, werk or «Shante, you stay» are only some of the expressions from the contestants’ lexicon of RuPaul’s Drag Race (RPDR), a popular reality television show that started airing in 2009 in the USA. Through an academic lens, the study of this type of expression was anecdotally called “lavender linguistics,” during the first explorations of the sexual minorities’ ways of talking. Since then and till now, concepts related to gender, sexuality, and the works of representation have influenced both linguistics and Translation Studies, which in turn has led to critical perspectives on translation, identity transfer, acculturation and, of course, the way language works. This paper begins by briefly referring to drag queens living in Lima, Peru, and how they have changed the way they talk to each other and about themselves. As will be argued, a cultural product such as RPDR and the necessary interlingual subtitling into Spanish –commercial or fan-made– have been influencing their linguistic engagement. Further on, the concepts of camp and camp talk will be presented as they were first introduced to Translation Studies with the work of Keith Harvey during the late 1990’s. Camp representations will be then analyzed in commercial and fan-made subtitles to reveal the semiotic and pragmatic constraints resulting from cultural-specific gay identities. From this first approach, new inquiries on audiovisual translations in general and identity acculturation in particular will be proposed.

Abstract Drag reducing agents (DRAs) are used to reduce friction created by turbulence flow in water transport and injection systems. The objective of this paper to assess mechanical degradation of rigid and flexible polymers used drag reduction applications. Commercial synthetic polyacrylamide-based DRA and CMHPG polymers were obtained. Synthetic brine was prepared to simulate typical water in surface pipelines. Friction loop test was used to assess friction reduction at various conditions, testing modes, and DRA polymer concentrations. Mechanical degradation of flexible and rigid polymers for drag reduction application was assessed. TGA analysis indicated the activity of the polyacrylamide polymer was 29 wt%. Viscosity measurements indicated ammonium persulfate reduced the viscosity of 1000 ppm polyacralamide-based DRA by 41 and 36% at 25 and 40°C, respectively. Flow loop testing showed that the flexible polymer was mechanically degraded (i.e. DR’ < 0.1) within 15, 47, and >200 min at 12 gal/min, NRe 70,022, 75°F, at reservoir tank bypass flow mode using 150, 300, and 1000 ppm of the PAM-based DRA, respectively. Rigid polysaccharides-based drag reducing agents showed significant resistance to mechanical degradation compared to polyacralamide-based DRA. Mechanical degradation of the polymer (via chain scission) was mainly caused by shearing/turbulence flow, circulation pump, number of flow cycles, and time. The degradation rate depended on DRA concentration, flow rate, polymer type, and circulation flow mode. DRA injection is a viable alternative to increase production capacity and/or improve energy efficiency.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The present study discusses the determination of the Seal drag force in the application where an elastomeric seal is used with a metallic interface in the presence of different fluids. An analytical model was constructed to predict the seal drag force and an experimental test was performed to check the fidelity of the analytical model. A Design of Experiment (DoE) was utilized to perform an experimental test considering different factors affecting the Seal drag force. Statistical tools such as the Test for Equal Variances and One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to draw inferences for the population based on samples tested in the DoE test. It was observed that Glycol fluids lead to lubricant wash-off resulting in increased seal drag force. Additionally, non-lubricated seals tend to show higher seal drag force as compared to lubricated seals.</div></div>

Drag reducing agents (DRA) in multiphase flow pipeline is of great interest in petroleum and pipeline industries since production can be increased by decreasing the pressure drop. Experiments were carried out in a 36-m long, 10-cm diameter multiphase flow system to examine the effect of drag reducing agents (DRA) on average pressure drop and slug characteristics. Superficial liquid velocities between 0.5 and 1.5 m/s and superficial gas velocities between 4 and 10 m/s were investigated. Temperature and pressure were maintained at 30 °C and 0.45 MPa. The DRA concentrations of 0, 25 and 50 ppm were used in this study. The results show that the average pressure drop decreased significantly by the change of flow characteristics when DRA was injected into the pipeline. At certain conditions, it was seen that a transition in flow pattern occurred from slug to wavy stratified flow with DRA. In addition, DRA was able to decrease the degree of turbulence at the gas-liquid interface with the addition of DRA. Some negative performance with the use of DRA in multiphase flow pipeline is also presented in this paper.

Particulate flows are commonly found in a variety of applications. For example, nanoparticles have been used in targeted drug delivery systems and improving heat transfer in nanofluids. Crucial to the development of technologies that incorporate nanoparticles is to understand the effect of a nanoparticle’s shape on its motion. The effect of shape on nanoparticles used in drug delivery, in particular, is a very active area of experimental investigation. Also, the determination of the coefficients of hydrodynamic forces or drag forces on nanoparticles of different shapes is crucial in designing effective nanoparticle-mediated therapies. In this study we present a resolved discrete particle method (RDPM), which is also called the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), to investigate the effect of shape on drag force in a vicious fluid. Three different shapes of particles are studied: a sphere, a probate ellipsoid, and an oblate ellipsoid. These particles have the same volume and are placed in contact with the bottom wall in simple shear flows. Their drag forces are computed numerically; it is found that the particle shape has a significant effect on the drag forces. In the case of a spherical particle, our results agree very well with the analytical results found in the literature. The motion of three particles of the same volume but different shape in a simple shear flows are also simulated. It shows that different particle shapes cause particles to experience different hydrodynamics forces, leading them to different velocities and paths.

This article shows that the added mass due to fluid structure interaction significantly affects the vibrational dynamics of cilia-based (vibrating cantilever-type) devices for handling micro/nano-scale fluid flows. Commonly, the hydrodynamic interaction between the cilia-based actuator and fluid is modeled as a Stokes drag force that is proportional to the velocity. Our main contribution is to show that such a drag effect cannot explain the substantial reduction in the resonant frequency of the cilia actuator operating in liquid when compared to the natural frequency of the cilia in air. It is shown that an added-mass approach can explain this reduction in the resonant frequency when operating cantilever-type devices in fluid. Thus, this article shows the need to model the added-mass effect, both, theoretically and by using experimental results.

Abstract Torque and drag (T&D) are major mechanical considerations that dictate the success of extended-reach drilling (ERD) operations. As drilling technology continues to push the limits of horizontal reach, understanding and managing T&D becomes increasingly critical to well delivery. This study presents an integrated approach to T&D optimization through well modeling and engineering solutions, demonstrated through three ERD case studies offshore Peninsular Malaysia. For each case study well, the design objectives, inherent T&D challenges posed by the extended well geometry, and drilling parameters were assessed. T&D modeling was conducted to simulate downhole conditions and identify potential mechanical limitations. Well A targeted a highly deviated open-hole section exceeding 3,200m measured depth with constrained surface equipment. Modeling showed that backreaming torque could exceed drill pipe ratings. Well B required cementing long open-hole intervals while maintaining low side forces to prevent casing wear. Simulated rotating and backreaming torques exceeded rig limits. Well C involved a tangent sidetrack and encountered high stress loads on the drill pipe. To address the challenges, integrated well engineering solutions were evaluated for each well. For Well A, drill string torque reducers were incorporated to dampen stick-slip and reduce friction-induced torque. In Well B, utilizing a pseudo-catenary build mechanism optimized the well path gradients to lower side forces. Finally, Well C employed a tapered drill string design to satisfy stress criteria. Post-drill comparisons between modeled and actual downhole data validated the effectiveness of the implemented solutions in optimizing T&D. The findings provide lessons on integrated well modeling and customized engineering solutions for efficient ERD project delivery. Through rigorous upfront planning and identification of well-specific challenges, appropriate solutions can be designed to safely expand drilling operational envelopes while controlling costs. Future work aims to broaden solution applications and further optimize integrated well construction management.

In the present study, we show how drag reduction of a bluff body can be achieved on a rational basis of a force theory. The force theory indicates where is the best location to apply the surface control to minimize the drag on the body. In particular, the method of drag reduction is illustrated for flow around a circular cylinder. It is shown that drag reduction for the circular cylinder can be as efficient as 46.5%.

Accurate representation of surface roughness in predictive models of aeolian sediment transport and dust emission is required for model accuracy. While past studies have examined roughness effects on drag partitioning, the spatial and temporal variability of surface shear velocity and the shear stress ratio remain poorly described. Here, we use a four-month dataset of total shear velocity (u*) and soil surface shear velocity (us*) measurements to examine the spatiotemporal variability of the shear stress ratio (R) before, during, and after vegetation green-up at a honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) shrub-invaded grassland in the Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA. Results show that vegetation green-up, the emergence of leaves, led to increased drag and surface aerodynamic sheltering and a reduction in us* and R magnitude and variability. We found that us* decreased from 20% to 5% of u* as the vegetation form drag and its sheltering effect increased. Similarly, the spatiotemporal variability of R was found to be linked directly to plant phenological phases. We conclude that drag partition schemes should incorporate seasonal vegetation change, via dynamic drag coefficients and/or R, to accurately predict the timing and magnitude of seasonal aeolian sediment fluxes.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death for women in the United States. The current treatment with chemotherapy drugs has significant side effects and may cause harm to healthy cells rather than cancer cells. In order to combat the potential side effects, nanoparticles composed of mesoporous silica were created to house the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX). The silica network contains the drug, and a pH study was conducted to determine the conditions for the nanoparticle to disperse the drug. The introduction of disulfide bonds within the nanoparticle created a framework to efficiently release 97% of DOX in acidic environments and 40% release in neutral environments. The denotation of acidic versus neutral environments was important as cancer cells are typically acidic. The chemistry was proved with the incubation of the loaded nanoparticle into HeLa cells for a cytotoxicity report and confocal imaging. The use of the framework for the anticancer drug was shown to be effective for the killing of cancerous cells.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 contains landmark provisions authorizing the government to negotiate the price of selected drugs covered by Medicare Part D. The biopharmaceutical industry has criticized these provisions as a threat to innovation arguing that reducing future revenues could disincentivize equity investment in biotechnology. This research examines the sensitivity of private and public equity investment in the biotechnology industry to drug price indices and market conditions from 2000-2022. The analysis shows that equity financing and valuation in the biotechnology industry were strongly associated with equity market conditions but not indices of either producer or consumer drug prices. These results do not support claims of an association between changing drug prices and the availability of equity capital to emerging biotechnology companies, which currently sponsor the majority of all clinical trials. These results add to evidence that the IRA may not have a negative impact on pharmaceutical innovation.

Some of these substances are banned in Switzerland and the European Union but are often produced and exported from there. Our messages draw on research findings from Kenya. They make the link to international conventions, highlight alternatives to pesticide-intensive agricultural practices, and call for phasing out “highly hazardous” substances in line with human rights and the precautionary principle.

We present a heuristic control theory model that describes smoking under restricted and unrestricted access to cigarettes. The model is based on the allostasis theory and uses a formal representation of a multiscale opponent process. The model simulates smoking behavior of an individual and produces both short-term (“loading up” after not smoking for a while) and long-term smoking patterns (e.g., gradual transition from a few cigarettes to one pack a day). By introducing a formal representation of withdrawal- and craving-like processes, the model produces gradual increases over time in withdrawal- and craving-like signals associated with abstinence and shows that after 3 months of abstinence, craving disappears. The model was programmed as a computer application allowing users to select simulation scenarios. The application links images of brain regions that are activated during the binge/intoxication, withdrawal, or craving with corresponding simulated states. The model was calibrated to represent smoking patterns described in peer-reviewed literature; however, it is generic enough to be adapted to other drugs, including cocaine and opioids. Although the model does not mechanistically describe specific neurobiological processes, it can be useful in prevention and treatment practices as an illustration of drug-using behaviors and expected dynamics of withdrawal and craving during abstinence.

We study the use of multi-level Monte Carlo methods for wind engineering. This report brings together methodological research on uncertainty quantification and work on target applications of the ExaQUte project in wind and civil engineering. First, a multi-level Monte Carlo for the estimation of the conditional value at risk and an adaptive algorithm are presented. Their reliability and performance are shown on the time-average of a non-linear oscillator and on the lift coefficient of an airfoil, with both preset and adaptively refined meshes. Then, we propose an adaptive multi-fidelity Monte Carlo algorithm for turbulent fluid flows where multilevel Monte Carlo methods were found to be inefficient. Its efficiency is studied and demonstrated on the benchmark problem of quantifying the uncertainty on the drag force of a tall building under random turbulent wind conditions. All numerical experiments showcase the open-source software stack of the ExaQUte project for large-scale computing in a distributed environment.
