By innovatively combining insights from research on cultural consumption, socialization and nationalism, this study is one of the first empirical studies to shed more light on role of parental socialization in domestic and foreign cultural consumption of films, books and music. Similar to previous studies on parental socialization of highbrow and lowbrow cultural consumption, parents’ cultural socialization when respondents were in their formative years (i.e. parental domestic cultural consumption) is relevant for respondents’ domestic and foreign cultural consumption later in life. Parents’ national behaviour during their children’s formative years is related to the respondents’ positive nationalist attitudes, which, in turn, is associated with respondents’ domestic film and music consumption. Parental socialization plays a less important role in domestic book consumption, indicating that in less diverse cultural markets, other socialization influences (such as school) might be playing a role as well. Adding to the debate on the influence of parental socialization over the life course, we found indications that the effects of parental socialization on domestic consumption were weaker for older compared to younger people. This suggests the importance of parental socialization and the varying ways in which it is associated with domestic cultural consumption.

Throughout their evolutionary history, humans have tried to domesticate a variety of wild terrestrial mammals, resulting in a limited number that has been successfully domesticated. Among these domesticated species, domestic goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) are a useful model species to study the effects of ontogenesis on the socio-cognitive abilities of domestic non-companion animals in their interactions with humans. To this end, the behavioral responses of two groups of goats with a different background of human socialization (high and low socialization) were compared in the impossible task test, an experimental paradigm aimed to study socio-cognitive skills and the tendency to interact with humans. Our results show that, when the task became impossible to solve, goats with a higher level of socialization interacted with the experimenter for a greater amount of time than subjects in the low socialization group, whereas the latter group exhibited increased door directed behavior. Overall, highly socialized goats made more social contact with humans compared to the other group in the impossible task paradigm.

Hegemons exercise power in the international system not only by manipulating material incentives but also by altering the substantive beliefs of elites in other nations. Socialization—the process through which leaders in these secondary states embrace a set of normative ideals articulated by the hegemon—plays an important role both in establishing an international order and in facilitating the functioning of that order. This article develops the notion of socialization in the international system and examines three hypotheses about the conditions under which it occurs and can function effectively as a source of power. The first hypothesis is that socialization occurs primarily after wars and political crises, periods marked by international turmoil and restructuring as well as by the fragmentation of ruling coalitions and legitimacy crises at the domestic level. The second is that elite (as opposed to mass) receptivity to the norms articulated by the hegemon is essential to the socialization process. The third hypothesis is that when socialization does occur, it comes about primarily in the wake of the coercive exercise of power. Material inducement triggers the socialization process, but socialization nevertheless leads to outcomes that are not explicable simply in terms of the manipulation of material incentives. These hypotheses are explored in the historical case studies of U.S. diplomacy after World Wars I and II and the British colonial experience in India and Egypt.

Liberal systemic theory is built on the assumption that the system’s dominant configuration is a Kantian confederation of major powers. In addition to being a democratic cluster, the liberal core is also a capitalist club. This article pushes systemic and socialization theory forward by introducing the mechanism of economic competition as an important driver of socialization. The article develops a theory of system-level competition, arguing that it is a distinct and co-equal mechanism of socialization to the established mechanisms of persuasion, inducement, and coercion. The article proposes a three-staged model of socialization that explains how prominent rising powers such as Turkey, India, Brazil, and China are being socialized into the liberal system. At the first phase, competitive pressure, outsiders are led to orient themselves toward the core out of a fear of falling behind and a desire to access network benefits. At the second phase, rushing, outsiders behave in pro-norm ways and make significant concessions in order to gain inclusion in the core’s institutional complex. At the third phase, internalization, external norms become embedded in domestic legal institutional structures and a robust pro-norm domestic coalition emerges. The article uses the case of China to illustrate the model and lend it some initial empirical support in one hard case.

This is a study of learning and socialization in China’s foreign security policy, examining how China has at times been more assertive and in other instances has taken a more accommodating approach in its foreign security policy behavior. This paper argues that China has been “socialized” by its international security environment by exploring Kenneth Waltz’s theoretical mechanism of the “socialization” of states in the international system. The 1995–1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis and the early 2000s, the Senkaku/Diaoyutai crises from 2012 to 2015, and the South China Sea in the mid-1990s are all instances in which China has employed force only to suffer strategically. This has eventually led to a less confrontational posture and contributed to the pursuit of a more cooperative engagement strategy with both Southeast Asia (from 1998 to 2008) and Taiwan ([Formula: see text]2006–2016). Variations in China’s assertiveness can be explained by the combination of domestic politics and signals from China’s international security environment.

The modem problem of domestic violence has a historical reach into antiquity and is a part of every known culture. Domestic violence relates to the origins of aggression in men including areas as diverse as violence, gender roles, relationships, and even cultural and religious ritual. The radical feminist movement ofthe 1950's pushed child physical and sexual abuse, and later domestic violence, out from the shadows of being regarded as a family's "dirty laundry" into the spotlight of public opinion. With public awareness came outrage at the plight of the women and their children who suffered at the hands of the batterer and an exponential increase in efforts by researchers to understand and describe the problem, by legislators, police and courts to create laws, arrest procedures to and contain the batterer and finally by clinicians to devise programs and methods to treat the man once he had been arrested, separated from his family and sent to a batterers' program in lieu of jail. In spite of the recognition of the importance of the problem, progress in working to change batterers has been hampered by a fundamental split between two factions as to the cause of the problem. One side claims that all men raised in a patriarchy are "batterers" to some degree due to masculine privilege. The others claim that there is an essential difference between men who batter and those that do not. This study addresses that question. This study was conducted in two phases. In phase I, the author administered an MMPI-2 protocol to thirty men who had been arrested for domestic violence and sent to batterers' intervention classes. In phase II, ten of these were selected for videotaped interviews, structured with questions based on Loevinger' s ego development work. Themes that emerged from the data suggested that these men, as a group, had difficulties in their ability to identify and communicate their feeling states, to effectively understand and manage relational conflict, and further that as a group these men showed evidence of internally experienced shame which they did not experience consciously. The author found support for the Shame A voidance Model of domestic violence, which asserts that batterers have several conditions which comprise the "essential difference" sought by the field. It states that cognitive, emotional and gender deficits, when combined with the presence of unacknowledged shame, will result in a man who will batter or abusively control his intimate partner in order to avoid experiencing his own shame during the course of natural relational conflicts. This is held to be counter to the feminist faction that holds that he batters to maintain masculine privileges over his partner.

This study examined the relationship among sex role socialization, history of family violence, and being a victim of domestic violence. The unit of analysis consisted of 30 women that are victims of domestic violence from the Mount Ephraim Baptist Church Educational Program in Atlanta, Georgia. The study was based on the premises that: 1) there would be a significant relationship between history of family violence and being a victim of domestic violence; and 2) there would be a significant relationship between sex role socialization and being a victim of domestic violence. A face to face survey research design was used to collect the data. The sample was a convenient sample of women taking educational classes at Mount Ephraim Baptist Church. Results of the findings indicated that there was no significant relationship between sex role socialization and domestic violence as well as no significant relationship between history of family violence and domestic violence. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Feral and fearful cats and kittens in animal shelters are not likely to be adopted as companion animals because they emit fearful or aggressive behaviors in the presence of humans. The purpose of the fearful to friendly (F2F) research was to investigate a shaping procedure to increase friendly behaviors of feral and fearful domestic cats and kittens with the goal of achieving animal shelters’ adoptability criteria. The results showed the F2F procedure was a safe and very effective procedure to quickly tame feral kittens deemed unadoptable. The day after implementing F2F, three out of four kittens approached me and accepted petting and holding without any additional training.

Крім того, у роботі розглянуто стан інституту сім’ї у сучасному українському суспільстві та визначено шляхи активізації креативного розвитку дитини в сім’ї. Наведено рекомендації щодо стимулювання розвитку креативних здібностей особистості.
Diplom work is devoted research of domestic socialization as terms of creative development of personality. The features of domestic environment are examined which influence on the high indexes of creative development of personality: possibility of self-expression of child, positive attitude of parents toward research activity of child, possibility of choice for a child, independent thought, influence of family, is on forming of positive self-appraisal of child, development of creative abilities. In addition, consisting of institute of family is in-process considered of modern Ukrainian society and certainly ways of activation of creative development of child in a family. Recommendations are resulted in relation to stimulation of development of creative capabilities of personality.

Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Despite the growing recognition of the prevalence of domestic violence worldwide, there is an increasing number of women reporting abuse, and there are those who have died at the hands of their abusers. Many of these domestic violence situations involve children who grow up carrying the physical and/or emotional scars of abuse into adulthood, which also has negative implications for their social well-being. This study adopts a qualitative approach to analysing emerging themes relating to the experiences of eight adult participants (four men and four women) who have lived in domestically violent homes during their childhood. The study deals with definitions of abuse, the social, physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioural and psychological effects of abuse and identifies the social consequences of growing up in a violent home. With reference to the research interviews, it is the researcher’s finding that if there is violence in the home, children’s socialisation will be impaired. The results of the study support the hypothesis that the socialisation of adults and their ability to form healthy relationships are hindered by being exposed to domestic violence during childhood. In terms of the goals of intervention, the basic principle is that children need to be provided with a safe environment, appropriate discipline and a secure relationship with an attentive caregiver. The ultimate goal of intervention is to prevent further harm and promote recovery. Socio-educational goals include being taught to communicate and settle differences without the use of violence, to promote the development of well-adjusted social beings.

This chapter assesses the domestic sources of contemporary China’s foreign policy. In particular, it examines the importance of national identities, China’s worldviews, the socialization of Chinese, and particularly the role of nationalism. The chapter begins by arguing that social influences matter: the CCP has inextricably linked itself, society, and foreign policy by staking its domestic right to rule upon its foreign policy performance. The chapter then turns to the thorny empirical question of what we know about Chinese feelings and attitudes toward different parts of the world, from China’s Asian neighbors, to the admired and resented Euro-American First World, to Russia, and the dark and backwards Third World of Africa and Latin America. It then turns to the causes/drivers of these worldviews, arguing that both demographics (e.g., age and location) and individual predispositions (e.g., nationalism and cosmopolitanism) matter, but that political and peer socialization has a powerful constraining effect on the international attitudes of the Chinese people.

From a comparative approach, we propose in this communication an Archaeology of some of the agrarian colonies implanted in the northwest of the Iberian peninsula: Lamas (Paredes de Coura), the colonization project of the wastelands of Montalegre and Boticas (Barroso) and the Plan de Colónización de la Tierra Llana (Lugo, Galicia). Despite being an area that shares common characteristics (same climate, small landowners, marginality), the solutions adopted have generated different materialities. From the Archaeology of the Recent Past, recently developed in Portugal, we raised theoretical and methodological questions for the study of this type of contemporary domestic space. This research is carried out within the scope of the Archaeology of Contemporary Past and Heritage Socialization project, funded by FCT (CEECIND / 04218/2017).

This chapter describes how the maintenance and fostering of trust was a crucial element in founding both the G7 summits and the European Council in the mid-1970s. Deeply anchored in the strong friendship between West German chancellor Helmut Schmidt and French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, both initiatives sought to deepen interpersonal relations as well as recover systemic trust in the Western (economic) systems in an informal, multilateral setting. The institutionalization and frequency of these meetings not only allowed for the development of a framework of informal coordination even in the absence of trust; it also provided a platform for the socialization of new leaders and a ritualistic display of Western unity, thus addressing potential international and domestic deficits of trust by “formalizing informality.”

Is poverty gendered? Feminist theorists suggest that the experience of poverty by any woman is shaped not only by her gender but by ideologies and other systems of social stratification such as race, ethnicity, and class – and that these dimensions are not simply an additional facet of a woman's identity but do affect her gendered experience as well. The narratives examined in this chapter consist of symbolic patriarchy, inheritance laws, gender socialization, domestic division of labor, and certain accounts pertaining to widows and the subordination of women. A scan of the African cultural landscape revealed a profile of rural poverty that is unproportionate, unequal, and sometimes unfairly affects women more than men. Patriarchal and discriminatory practices are stubbornly unyielding in some rural areas and has inflicted a blow against women the most.

The article examines in detail the social changes that affect the formation of personality, the influence of artificial intelligence and the media on the life of a modern person and a teenager in the process of socialization, and possible negative consequences. The author examines the problem of moral deformation in adolescents caused by certain features of the digital society, while analyzing the positive experience of using the biographical method in European countries on the example of Germany. The article also describes an experiment conducted on the bases of general education institutions of the city of St. Petersburg, summarizes its results, proving the effectiveness of the use of biographical material in the domestic education system.
