The article presents the shaping of identity in Wir Strebermigranten (2017, title in translation We, superimmigrants) and Rückkehr nach Polen (2019). The article posits the following thesis. The crisis of identity and the impression of assimilation being disrupted in Germany as presented in both works result from the complex problem of “being in between” the German nationality and Polish nationality. The will to manage the traumatization caused by cultural interference makes the outline of a ‘double biography’ visible in both works, especially in Wir Strebermigranten. The author also makes an exhausting attempt to portray the articulation of the collective identity of the Polish migrants of the so-called second generation, who immigrated to Germany in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Abstract This article argues that there existed a group of modern professional officers in the warlord armies during the Republican period (1912-1949); they were caught in the middle of a political situation that distorted their career development, disrupted their intellectual growth, and undermined their group cohesion. Using the prosopographical approach and drawing on theories of military culture and professionalism, this article looks at the lives and careers of the middle and high-ranking officers of the National Pacification Army (Anguojun), as they formed the backbone of the warlord armies that controlled a substantial part of China before the Northern Expedition (1926-1928) and that played an important role in the wars in China from the 1910s to 1949. Some of these officers, despite their background, rose to high rank in the Nationalist and Communist armies; the less fortunate ones, however, were purged after 1949 by the new Communist government. It elaborates how political strife affected the lives of the professionally trained officers in China, discusses the development of modern military education in China, and sheds lights on the self-understanding of these officers, their relationship to the state and society, and the sources of their cohesion as a group.

Chronic disease management strategies are largely based on single disease models, yet patients often need to manage multiple conditions. This study uses the concepts of ‘chronic illness trajectory’ and ‘biographical disruption’ to examine how patients self-manage multiple chronic conditions and especially how they prioritize which condition(s) will receive the greatest attention. Fifty-three people with multiple chronic illnesses participated in one of 6 focus groups. The results suggest that people who were disrupted tended to be younger than 60, lived on their own, cared for other family members, or other barriers. Many participants anticipated subsequent illnesses given their age and prior experience with illness. In order to cope with their multiple illnesses most felt it was necessary to prioritize their ‘main’ illness. Their reasons for prioritizing a particular illness included: (1) the unpredictable nature of the disease; (2) the condition could not be controlled by tablets; and (3) the condition tended to set off the rest of their health problems. Social context played a key role in shaping patients’ biography and chronic illness trajectory.

Access to quality early childhood education is a sustainable development goal towards empowering people in an emerging economy. The purpose of this study is to examine how the coronavirus disease impacted a small early childhood business in Vietnam, which experienced two waves of attacks. Previous studies have examined mainly the impact of various factors under stable environments. This study differs in that COVID-19 brought sudden, lasting, and impactful changes to the business environment. The study uses a case-study research approach that invited a small business owner to write and share the biography of the business from the start to the date of the research study and analysed the content using the theory of planned behaviour. The shared belief systems of a business to succeed led the owner to invest loan funds and join the company that became successful with planned actions. Dependence on a rental property later stalled the business growth. The owners settled into a stable way of business thinking. The two waves of coronavirus pandemic in Vietnam that affected their business location dried up cash, forcing the business into voluntary liquidation. The impact of coronavirus disease on small business in an emerging nation, Vietnam, can bring out lessons of business survival and ways policymakers can assist companies in surviving considering their capital structures under destabilising business environments. The qualitative causes found for the theory of planned behaviour can become useful for a later quantitative investigation.

This article draws on research undertaken as part of a Collective Biography project generated by a group of activists and lecturers teaching and researching in youth and community work (YCW). Collective Biography (CB) is an approach to research in which participants work productively with memory and writing to generate collective action orientated analysis. The emphasis on collectivized approaches to CB work acts as a potential strategy to disrupt and resist the reproduction of power in academic knowledge-making practices and the impact of powerful policy discourses in practice. The article explores the current context and contemporary challenges for teaching anti-oppressive practice in UK based universities before briefly scoping out the methodology of CB. Extracts from a memory story are used as an example of the process of collective analysis generated through the process of CB in relation to racism, the role of anti-oppressive practice, and as the basis for YCW educators to think collectively about implications for teaching going forward. The article goes on to explore the role of concepts that were worked with as part of the CB process and considers the potential significance for teaching anti-oppressive practice in YCW. The article concludes by starting to scope out key considerations relating to the potential role of CB as a grass roots strategy to open spaces of possibility alongside young people and communities in reassembling the teaching of anti-oppressive practice in YCW.

Although nationalism in Tanzania, as elsewhere in Africa, has been criticized for its shortcomings, and a ‘Dar es Salaam School’ has been charged with succumbing to its ideological biases, few historians have revisited or questioned Tanzania's dominant nationalist narrative – a narrative created over 25 years ago. Biographies written in aid of this narrative depict nationalism in the former Trust Territory of Tanganyika as primarily the work of a few good men, including ‘proto-nationalists’ whose anti-colonial actions set the stage and provided historical continuity for the later western-oriented ideological work of nationalist modernizers. The life history narratives of women who became activists in the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) in the 1950s disrupt this view of progressive stages toward an emerging nationalist consciousness which reflected and borrowed heavily from western forms and ideals. They suggest that Tanganyikan nationalism was also and significantly the work of thousands of women, whose lives and associations reflected trans-tribal ties and affiliations, and whose work for TANU served to both construct and perform what nationalism came to signify for many Tanzanian women and men. Women activists did not simply respond to TANU's nationalist rhetoric; they shaped, informed and spread a nationalist consciousness for which TANU was the vehicle.Neither ‘extraordinary’ individuals (the usual subjects of male biography) nor ‘representative’ of ‘ordinary people’ (often the subjects of life histories), TANU women activists' lives reveal the severe limitations of the dichotomous characterizations of traditional biographical forms. Together, their narratives constitute a collective biographical narrative of great significance for our understanding of nationalism and nationalist movement in the former Tanganyika.

This essay argues that Claudio Magris’s early novels, Inferences from a Sabre (1991), and A Different Sea (1993), deliberately mingle genres in order to disrupt systems of knowing, and the power they enforce. While both novels treat different subject matter, they have a shared concern with the application of texts to life, deploying a range of genres – biography and autobiography, letters, the novel, the philosophical and scholarly essay and historiography – in bringing their stories to the reader. The ruptures between these genres disclose Magris’s interest in structures of knowing, the work of genre in enforcing a certain world view, and the importance of the capacity – derived from his interest in the ‘Habsburger Mythos’ – to accommodate intra-generic variance, multiplicity, even contradiction, instantiating an unsettled writing, somewhere on the border between certainty and doubt. Magris’s work with genre is thus not only aesthetic, but political, recalling a lost vision of European organization and inter-working.

Autonomy and selfhood are primary concerns for scholars of long-term care. Previous work has shown how organizational routines threaten client autonomy and disrupt access to the material and symbolic resources that ground the biography of the self. In this article, I examine how a group of African-American older adults within an adult day service center ameliorated these threats through religious expression. In most health care settings, religion is delivered as an individual, clinical resource. At this site, religion and recreation became intertwined such that religion became a participatory resource that affirmed client membership to a community beyond the walls of the organization. However, as an institutionally provided resource, religion was delivered through work routines that constrained which versions of community to which clients could belong. I conclude by considering the implications for the expanding universe of long-term care organizations tasked with the maintenance of the body as well as the continuity of the self.

As the term ‘chronic’ suggests, the chronically ill body is one that reorients itself to the ways in which time is perceived, experienced and used, in a multiply of ways. New practices are developed and routines are established to manage chronic illness in personal and social contexts. As rhythms of bodily life change one’s expectations for the future might change, and their relations with other people (who have their own temporal rhythms) might also change. Meanings attributed to past and present experiences and practices, as well as future plans and imaginings, acquire new significance with chronic illness. Through public health and anthropological lenses this thesis investigates some of the intersections between chronic illness and time. In his tone-setting analysis of the ways in which chronic illness influences relationships with and to time, Bury (1982) argued that chronic illness invariably creates a ‘biographical disruption’ for the individual with chronic illness. This thesis provides empirical evidence collected in Australia, including self-reported calendar and clock/ed time spent on managing illness, much of which broadly supports Bury’s analysis. However, this thesis also questions the veracity of Bury’s sure and certain claim; while acknowledging that chronic illness can be and often is disrupting of the biography, I suggest that there is more variety in experiences of chronic illness than Bury’s theory allows. For instance, people may feel their biographies to be initially disrupted, but the profundity of disruption that Bury attends to may absent itself after a time, as the management of chronic illness fades into the background of habitual life. So too, can chronic illness create cycles of disruption even as the illness moves between stable and unstable phases. Alternatively, people may find that the onset of chronic illness was something they had expected, and experience the illness not so much as disruption but as confirmation to their biography. This thesis identifies several ways in which Bury’s thesis may be nuanced and challenged. Using data gathered over a number of different fields, and covering a wide range of illnesses, I show in this thesis that factors influencing biographical disruption, including the type and severity of illness; the stage of life that the individual is in when they become ill; their previous relationships to their body and to time; the self-management behaviour in which they engage; the amount of time they spend on health practices; and the sense ill persons have of their own agency, impact on whether and how much of a biographical disruption chronic illness is to the person. As I will demonstrate throughout this thesis, the importance of time in the experience of chronic illness is not sufficiently recognised by the primary and secondary health care sectors. It is very common, for instance, for a chronically ill person to access multiple care providers – each of whom provide management of illness advice (and possibly medication prescriptions) into a kind of time vacuum – without reference to the ways in which the person’s time is already accounted for – including time spent attending to the advice, management and medication regimes of other health care providers. It is very often the case that a time burden of chronic illness arises from information provided to the patient whose time is assumed to be wholly available. The development of a care plan, which I propose at the close of this thesis, provides a device for enabling those with chronic illness to anticipate and plan for a future where illness will move them into different phases of experience. It also enables aligning of otherwise singularly administered regimes in and through the defining feature of chronic illness – time.

This chapter reviews Ida Fink's A Scrap of Time. It is a collection which consists of twenty-three stories that offer a haunting, uncompromising view of life in Poland during the Holocaust. The book includes scraps of ordinary lives that have been disrupted and terminated, and many of the stories are narrative slices of family, friends, or helpless bystanders. Here, the stories in A Scrap of Time illustrate Fink's artistry in describing the dilemmas, conflicts, and crises of ordinary families facing the Nazi threat. The stories include no crematoria, no selections, and no merciless views of life in the camps, but their absence does not mitigate the sadness, futility, and the omnipresent ‘why’. The chapter reveals how these are spare, quiet stories that disturb in a far more upsetting way, for they threaten our very beliefs in an essential human dignity and innocence. In addition to the book review, the chapter also provides a brief biography of Ida Fink as well as more focused analyses on some of the stories in the collection.

Xia Yan, the underground leader of the left-wing films in the 1930s and top official of the film industry in the PRC since 1954, embodied the cultural history of the CCP. A brief biography of this Communist feminist artist leader disrupts the reductive dichotomy of the Party vs. artists in film studies and illuminates a tension-ridden history of socialist filmmaking that constituted a highly contentious site in the socialist revolution. Situating his politically engagingartistic creativity inside ashiftingpolitical process, this chapter traces Xia Yan’s major role in transmitting the New Culture agenda of transforming a patriarchal culture in socialist cultural production and delineatesdiverse and contradictory politicalpositions and artistic preferences in artists’ innovative experimentsofcreating a socialist new culture. It also analyzes his films that continued the paradigm of revolutionary heroines.

This chapter considers the limits of disseminating knowledge about the harms of neoliberal globalization as a strategy for creating change. It examines three documentary films (Life and Debt, Darwin’s Nightmare, and Black Gold) as commodity biographies. Offering an alternative to complicitous consumption (where one’s life is subsidized by others’ suffering), these films urge a shift from overconsumption to postconsumerism, which privileges products that dare to tell their own stories. Such value-adding narratives function less as defetishization than as new objects of consumerist desire. Nevertheless, moments of reflexivity, in which documentary subjects appear as consumers of commodities or film, disrupt too-easy binaries of First World consumption versus Third World production. The chapter situates these films about fair trade within longer histories of consumerism and its ethical conundrums, including the nexus of commodity knowledge and desire in Moby-Dick, and lessons in ethical consumption and viewership in Dziga Vertov’s experimental films.

Chapter 4 offers analyses of several images from Lalla Essaydi’s photographic series Converging Territories (2004), Les Femmes du Maroc (2006-2008), and Harem (2009), in which she exclusively depicts women from Morocco or the Moroccan diaspora. The chapter focuses on the feminist transnational discourse that emerges from Essaydi’s inscription of her biography—more specifically her experience growing up in a harem and living as an adult woman in Saudi Arabia and the United States—and her training in Western art. The chapter is structured around a set of key questions. Does Essaydi’s juxtaposition of Orientalist tropes and poses from canonical nineteenth-century European Orientalist paintings with the veil, calligraphy, henna tattoos, and Moroccan architecture disrupt or reinforce stereotypes in the depiction of Arab and Muslim women? Can Essaydi’s hybrid language be read as a form of feminist ‘double critique’ that resists Western and Islamic patriarchy? How do Essaydi’s images intervene in relation to the transnational and transcultural discourse and positioning of the ‘Muslimwoman’? What is the economy between the transnational, transglobal and translocal, and the simply local in Essaydi’s images? How do Essaydi’s photographs contribute to the critical (re)thinking of gender in the context of globalization?

This chapter shows that even Scholem's “Jews and Germans,” despite its explicit rejection of the past Jewish love for things German, relies on tropes of love to conjure the possibility of a future German-Jewish dialogue. Another famous German Jewish thinker, Hannah Arendt, is more outspoken in her valorization of love as a mode of sociopolitical intervention. In her biography of a Jewish salonnière of the Romantic era, Rahel Levin Varnhagen, Arendt affirms the love of the pariah as a form of solidarity that is rooted in shared experiences of marginalization. Finally, the chapter turns to the decade after the 1990 unification of Germany, when the theme of interreligious or intercultural love enjoyed much popularity both in mainstream feature films and in contemporary German Jewish writers. Barbara Honigmann, for instance, dramatizes failing Jewish-Gentile love affairs to show how memories of the Third Reich continue to disrupt German-Jewish relations in the present. But this is not a negation of love as a trope of interreligious or intercultural mediation. Love remains an important trope in Honigmann, one that allows her to imagine a new kind of German Jewish diaspora.
