SUMMARY Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the reproducibility of working casts of a digital impression system by comparing them with the original, virtual, and rapid prototyping casts. Materials and Methods A total of 54 cast sets in clinically stable occlusion were used. They were scanned by an iTero intraoral scanner and converted into STL format virtual casts. Rapid prototyping casts and polyurethane casts were fabricated from the iTero milling system based on the virtual casts. Several horizontal and vertical measurements were performed from the four types of casts, that is, original stone casts, virtual casts, rapid prototyping casts, and polyurethane casts of iTero. Measurement error, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and differences among the casts were calculated and compared. Results Casts from iTero milling machines exhibited greater dimensional differences and lower ICC values than did other casts. In addition, many of the measurements of the iTero working casts showed statistically significant differences in comparison to the three other types of casts. In contrast, there were no statistically significant differences between the virtual and original casts. Conclusion Virtual casts made by the iTero intraoral scanner exhibited excellent reproducibility. However, the casts from the iTero milling machine showed greater dimensional differences and lower reproducibility compared to other types of casts.

Abstract Objectives The integration of computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies in diagnosis, treatment planning, and fabrication of prosthetic restoration is changing the way in which prosthodontic treatment is provided to patients. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) printed casts produced from the intraoral scanner using stereolithographic (SLA) 3D printing technique, their digital replicas, and conventional stone casts. Materials and Methods In this in vitro study, a typodont of maxillary and mandibular arches with full dentate ivory teeth was used as a reference cast. The typodont was digitized using Trios 3Shape intraoral scanner to create digital casts. The digital files were converted into 3D printed physical casts using a prototyping machine that utilizes the stereolithography printing technology and photocurable polymer as printing material. Linear measurements (mesiodistal and occlusocervical) and interarch measurements (intercanine and intermolar) were made for digital and prototyped models and were compared with the original stone casts. The reference teeth were canines, first premolars and second premolars in the maxillary and mandibular arches on the right and left sides. The measurements on printed and conventional casts were done by digital caliper while on digital casts; Geomagic Qualify software was used. Statistical Analysis One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare measurements among groups. Results Digital casts showed significantly higher error than the other two groups in all linear and interarch measurements. The mean errors of the digital cast in occlusocervical (OC) and mesiodistal (MD) measurements (0.016 and 0.006, respectively) were higher compared with those in the other two groups (OC, 0.004 and 0.007 and MD, 0.003 and 0.005 [p < 0.0001 and p = 0.02, respectively]). Also, digital mean error in intermolar width (IMW) and intercanine width (ICW) (0.142 and 0.113, respectively) were greater than the other two groups (IMW, 0.019 and 0.008 and ICW, 0.021 and 0.011 [p < 0.0001]). However, the errors were within the acceptable clinical range. Conclusion The 3D printed casts may be considered as a substitute for stone casts with clinically acceptable accuracy that can be used in diagnosis, treatment planning, and fabrication of prosthetic restorations.

The accuracy with which virtual articulators are able to simulate centric and eccentric movements when fabricating definitive restorations has not yet been proven to be on par with mechanical articulators which have been reliably used in restorative dentistry for decades. This may be an issue when working on complex restorative cases utilizing a digital workflow and could result in considerable chairside adjustment time and subsequent loss of occlusal anatomy and morphology. Interchanging between digital and analog workflows is a challenge as accurate cross-mounting is difficult due to the changes that occur as the digital and analog workflows progress. This technique article provides a method for the fabrication of simple digital mounting jigs that enable clinicians and laboratory technicians to mount printed digital wax-ups and working casts back onto a programmed mechanical articulator, opposing diagnostic casts that have originally been mounted by means of a facebow transfer. This allows for the positioning of printed digital wax-ups and working casts to be in the correct 3-dimensional spatial relationship on the mechanical articulator for any necessary occlusal adjustments of the digitally designed wax-ups and/or definitive restorations before they are moved chairside.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare dental size measurements, their reproducibility and the application of Tanaka and Johnston regression equation in predicting the size of canines and premolars on plaster and digital dental casts. METHODS: Thirty plaster casts were scanned and digitized. Mesiodistal measurements of the teeth were then performed with a digital caliper on the plaster and digital casts using O3d software system (Widialabs©).The sum of the sizes of the lower incisors was used to obtain predictive values of the sizes of the premolars and canines using the regression equation, and these values were compared with the actual sizes of the teeth. The data were statistically analyzed by applying to the results Pearson's correlation test, Dahlberg's formula, paired t-test and analysis of variance (p<0.05). RESULTS: Excellent intraexaminer agreement was observed in the measurements performed on both dental casts. No random error was present in the measurements obtained with the caliper and systematic error (bias) was more frequent in the digital casts. Space prediction obtained by applying the regression equation was greater than the sum of the canines and premolars on the plaster and digital casts. CONCLUSIONS: Despite an adequate reproducibility of the measurements performed on both casts, most measurements on the digital casts were higher than those on the plaster casts. The predicted space was overestimated in both models and significantly higher in the digital casts.

The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of stereolithographic casts (SCs) with those obtained using conventional implant impressions. An epoxy resin model containing dental implants was used as master model. Dental casts (n = 10) were fabricated through both conventional and digital implant impressions. The conventional casts (CCs), SCs, and the master model were digitized, and the accuracy was determined through a deviation analysis and linear measurements. Data were analyzed using paired Student t test with P &lt; .05. The SCs showed higher deviation at the vestibular area (CC: 41 ± 28.87 μm; SC: 117 ± 36.83 μm) and lingual cusps (CC: 40.70 ± 19.79 μm; SC: 80 ± 42.95 μm) in comparison with CCs. No statistically significant difference was found for linear measurements of conventional and digital casts. The entire-arch accuracy was comparable between casts. However, SCs were less accurate at the cusp level in comparison with CCs.

Objective. This study aimed to compare the use of digital models and plaster casts in assessing the improvement in occlusion following orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods. Digital models and plaster casts of 39 consecutive patients at pre- and posttreatment stages were obtained and assessed using the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) index and the Index of Complexity and Treatment Need (ICON). PAR and ICON scores were compared at individual and group levels. Categorization of improvement level was compared using Kappa (κ) statistics. Results. There was no significant difference in neither PAR scores (p > 0.05) nor ICON scores (p > 0.05) between digital and plaster cast assessments. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) values for changes in PAR and ICON scores were excellent (ICC > 0.80). Agreement of ratings of occlusal improvement level between digital and plaster model assessments was 0.83 (κ) for PAR and 0.59 (κ) for ICON, respectively. Conclusion. The study supported the use of digital models as an alternative to plaster casts when assessing changes in occlusion at the ‘individual patient’ level using ICON or PAR. However, it could not fully support digital models as an alternate to plaster casts at ‘the group level’ (as in the case of clinical audit/research).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of master casts generated by conventional (putty and light body consistencies polyvinyl siloxane and alginate) and digital impression techniques on a typodont master model with full-arch-prepared abutment teeth. The null hypotheses tested were as follows: (1) no statistically significant differences in accuracy between casts made by the two impression modalities and the typodont master model at each of the four locations (horizontal straight, horizontal curved, horizontal cross arch, and vertical), and (2) no statistically significant differences in dimensions measured at each of the four locations between the casts generated using the conventional and digital impression techniques. For the conventional technique, 10 impressions each were made for the typodont model using polyvinyl siloxane and alginate impression materials, and the casts were poured. For the digital technique, the typodont model was scanned 10 times using a TRIOS-3 3Shape intraoral scanner, and the casts were printed. The measurements for the horizontal (anteroposterior and cross arch) and vertical dimensions were made using a stereomicroscope and the accuracy of fabricated casts was expressed as the percentage of deviation from the typodont master model’s values. A one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (p < 0.05) were used to analyze the data. In the current study, the only measurement that did not exceed 0.5% in dimensional change was with the stone casts produced by both the 3M ESPE PVS and Kromopan alginate impression materials at the HAPC dimension. The casts generated by impressions made using the 3M ESPE PVS impression material were the most accurate, whereas the casts generated by making digital impressions using the TRIOS-3 3Shape intraoral scanner were the least accurate among the three tested groups. The greatest number of distortions above 0.5% (at all dimensional locations) was produced by the digital models printed using the ASIGA 3D printer.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in maxillofacial surgery. The CBCT image of the dental arches, however, is of insufficient quality to use in digital planning of orthognathic surgery. Several authors have described methods to integrate digital dental casts into CBCT scans, but all reported methods have drawbacks. The aim of this feasibility study is to present a new simplified method to integrate digital dental casts into CBCT scans. In a patient scheduled for orthognathic surgery, titanium markers were glued to the gingiva. Next, a CBCT scan and dental impressions were made. During the impression-taking procedure, the titanium markers were transferred to the impression. The impressions were scanned, and all CBCT datasets were exported in DICOM format. The two datasets were matched, and the dentition derived from the scanned impressions was transferred to the CBCT of the patient. After matching the two datasets, the average distance between the corresponding markers was 0.1 mm. This novel method allows for the integration of digital dental casts into CBCT scans, overcoming problems such as unwanted extra radiation exposure, distortion of soft tissues due to the use of bite jigs, and time-consuming digital data handling.

This thesis contains different studies on the effects of the rapid palatal expansion.The purpose of this thesis is to investigate some of the effects of palatal expansion which are still unaddressed in literature. The first part of the thesis, after a brief introduction to the transverse maxillary contraction and palatal expansion, will outline the results of clinical trials that relate to the non-orthodontic effects that palatal expansion may have on: cervical vertebrae, posture and upper airways.The second part will show the first results, from an orthodontical point of view, of a multicentric randomized clinical trial designed to analyze the possible different effects of palatal expander anchored on deciduous or permanent teeth.

The biggest challenge business leaders are facing today is to survive to the new digital economy. De facto, start-ups are disrupting established business models in every industry on a daily basis. They are not only setting the new market rules, they are creating a completely new game. Therefore, incumbents should take the opportunities that the digital revolution is offering and reinvent themselves by disrupting their own traditional businesses and practices in order to remain competitive and succeed in the new market. This research defines how established companies should organize themselves in order to successfully transform their own business and practices. Above all, it defines a roadmap that can be followed by any organization that seeks to gain competitive advantage and exploit new opportunities and solutions. Specifically, it demonstrates that the transformation journey should consider two separate but profoundly connected elements: (1) The new approach to the external market as the base of a (2) deep internal strategic re-organization. The new approach to the external market requires companies to communicate with it as well as analyse it on a regular basis. In order to do so companies have to constantly: Study the competition (both direct and indirect); Analyse the new technologies in the market; Monitoring the changes in the customer preferences and behaviours and seek new talents that can help the transformation success. These elements constitute the foundation of the overall internal re-organization that recognize in its non self-referential approach its major critical success factor. The Internal re-organization most important element is the IT repositioning within the organization that have to become to all effects a strategic partner for the business. Once the enabler has been pushed to the center it is the time to engage the Human resource department that will help the organization to decrease the change management costs and will help to create a new transformation culture. The Human resource department as well as the IT and the other functions have to define clearly who is the person that will be practically in charge of the organization transformation, or, in other words the transformation leader. He will practically manage and define the transformations streams and projects he will also orchestrate the overall process and determine the company’ fate. In the overall re-organization a new modality of work is required. For this reason, the organization should develop projects and solutions by using multifunctional teams that are composed by people coming from different functions and that can give different perspectives and ideas regarding a specific project or issue. To ensure that the different multifunctional teams are respecting the organization constraints and strategy a new role has to be defined: The Enterprise Project Manager Officer that coordinates the teams and reports the activities to the transformation leader. As the main characteristic of today economy is the speed at which changes occurs, companies will be asked to go through the transformation process several times in their life. To do so, they have to be audacious and exploit different ideas and possible solutions fast in order to rapidly decide the new vision and adjust the process to it. Thus, no process can be generalized, at the base there must be a deep knowledge of the company structure and characteristics and then a custom, more detail plan, can be design. And every time something change the process should be carefully reviewed. By following the different steps incumbents can effectively innovate and compete in the new market economy by continuously studying what is going on in the external market and reorganizing the transformation journey accordingly. In this way the percentage of transformation that fail will be drastically lowered and the success ratio will significantly increase.

O contexto atual tem sido marcado pela adoção de novas tecnologias que têm alterado não só o processo de comunicação das empresas com o público, como também a interação entre consumidores e empresas. As redes sociais, as App’s, os conteúdos interativos e as análises do Marketing Digital são hoje essenciais para que os negócios alcancem o consumidor e os resultados pretendidos. Neste sentido, o presente estudo tem como interesse investigar quais as estratégias de marketing digital das startups portuguesas. Para tal,foram realizadas entrevistas a quinze startups de diversos setores de atuação. A metodologia utilizada foi a qualitativa e o propósito é exploratório, pois pretende-se investigar até que ponto têm estas empresas explorado as ferramentas digitais existentes. Assim, foi criado um guião de entrevista que se divide em quatro dimensões: a aplicação do Marketing Digital, a presença digital, a alocação dos recursos na área digital e a perceção geral acerca da evolução e tendências do Marketing Digital. Os resultados permitiram observar que a grande maioria das startups entrevistadas reconhece a importância do Marketing Digital, estando presente no mundo digital, maioritariamente através das redes sociais, de forma a dar-se a conhecer, sem grandes investimentos. Verificou-se ainda que mais de metade destas empresas utiliza métricas de comunicação e realiza um planeamento das ferramentas de Marketing Digital. Não obstante dos resultados obtidos, a generalização das conclusões poderá estar limitada dado o reduzido número de startups analisadas, bem como a zona geográfica, os cargos dos entrevistados e os setores de atividade das empresas estudas.
The current context has been marked by the adoption of new technologies wish has altered not only the communication process of the companies with the public, but also the interaction between consumers and companies. Social networks, App, interactive contents and the analysis of digital marketing are essential today for businesses to achieve consumers and the wanted results. In this context, the present study has as main interest to investigate what the startup companies are doing to follow this evolution, since they have in their favor tools that do not require almost none investment and that can facilitate the increase the profits. This study was conducted by fifteen startups interviews with different areas of activity. The methodology used was the qualitative and the purpose is exploratory, since the intention is to investigate the extent to which these companies have exploited the digital tools. Thus, was create an interview script that is divided into four dimensions, the application of digital marketing, digital presence, investment in the digital area and the perception about digital marketing trends. The results showed that most of the startups recognize the importance of Digital Marketing having presence in the digital world through social networks, in order to obtain data about their target, without major investments. Another aspect to take into account is the fact that more than half of these companies use communication metrics. The presented results may limit the generalization of the conclusion since the study presents limitations such as the reduced number of startups studied.

Para ello se eligió trabajar con las colecciones de la Fototeca Andina del Centro Bartolomé de Las Casas del Cusco que representan un conjunto voluminoso de imágenes diversas y de mucho valor, únicas en el Perú. Los archivos no sólo ilustran un panorama completo de la sociedad andina peruana entre 1890 y 1970, de importancia considerable para investigadores tanto de las humanidades y las artes, sino también reflejan una amplia gama de ejemplos de técnicas fotográficas por lo que se constituye en un registro tangible del desarrollo de la fotografía en el Perú; que merece conservarse y difundirse ampliamente.

A presença de equipamentos digitais nas habitações tem vindo a crescer gradualmente. As casas estão a digitalizar-se! Com este crescimento contínuo, cresce também a complexidade da sua gestão e interoperabilidade de tal forma que apenas os utilizadores entusiastas são capazes de lidar com esta tarefa. A instalação e configuração dos equipamentos é frequentemente difícil de ser efectuada pelos próprios utilizadores, surgindo assim a necessidade de ajuda externa. Analisando aquilo que se imagina poder vir a ser habitação típica portuguesa num horizonte de 5 anos, esta dissertação tem como objectivo avaliar o mercado de casa digital de Portugal e os possíveis papéis dos possíveis actores desse mercado. A evolução temporal dos custos de aquisição e operação dos equipamentos foram estimados para prever o possível crescimento do mercado, tendo por base alguma literatura existente. Foram estudados cenários de potenciais caminhos para a evolução do mercado da casa digital, considerando duas hipóteses: globalmente centralizado e do-it-yourself (o próprio utilizador), e os respectivos resultados são comparados. Com este trabalho procurou adquirir-se uma melhor compreensão dos factores que podem condicionar o desenvolvimento do mercado da casa digital e do seu peso relativo.
The presence of digital devices in houses has been gradually increasing. The houses are getting digital. Along with this continual growth, also the complexity of its management and the interoperability increase, in such a way that only the enthusiastic users are able to handle this task. The installation and configuration of the equipment is usually difficult to be performed by the users themselves, thus resulting in the need for outside help. Analysing what one might think to be a typical Portuguese house within 5 years, this dissertation aims to assess the market of digital home of Portugal and the possible roles of eventual performers in this market. The temporal evolution of acquisition costs and operation of equipment were estimated to predict the possible growth of the market, based on some literature. Scenarios of potential paths for the evolution of digital home market were studied, considering two cases: globally centralised and do-it-yourself (the user himself), and the results are compared. This work aimed to gain a better understanding of factors that may influence the development of the digital home market and its relative weight.

This thesis is intended to analyze a new business model, which bases the main activities of a company in a digital platform. To do so, two companies – Uber and Airbnb - were studied in depth. An overview of each company, an analysis of how is their pricing model and some financial data is shown. In order to provide conclusions concerning the main question of this study, how is value created through digital platforms, it is important to deliver some information regarding the major theoretical concepts, such as sharing economy, trust or network effects. The most fundamental for this work was, certainly, the sharing economy one: the fact that this type of economy is emerging and allowing people to connect with each other and generate activity is very important. Later in the thesis, a model is used to give a more clear perspective of which elements generate value, when a platform is in use. The platform allows transactions, which therefore enable the participating organizations to create value.
A presente tese destina-se a analisar um novo modelo de negócio, que baseia as principais actividades de uma empresa numa plataforma digital. Nesse sentido, duas empresas – Uber e Airbnb – foram analisadas em detalhe. Uma visão geral de cada empresa, uma análise de que tipo de modelo de preços e alguns dados financeiros são apresentados. De forma a conseguir proporcionar conclusões acerca da questão fulcral deste trabalho, de como é que, através de plataformas digitais, se consegue criar valor, é necessário examinar alguns conceitos teóricos, tais como a “network effects”, confiança ou “economia partilhada”. O conceito com mais peso para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho foi, certamente, o da “economia partilhada”, visto que este tipo de economia está em crescimento e permite às pessoas conectarem-se umas com as outras e, dessa forma, gerarem actividade, o que é muito importante. Existe um modelo que é utilizado nesta tese, de forma a oferecer uma perspectiva mais clara de que elementos geram valor, no caso da utilização de uma plataforma. A plataforma permite que haja transações, o que leva à criação de valor.

El creciente interés de las empresas privadas y estatales por adoptar la transformación digital es debido a que cada vez son más las empresas que deciden sumarse a esta para mejorar su organización y garantizar entregar valor a sus clientes. Sin embargo, son pocos los profesionales capacitados para guiar a sus empresas a través de la transformación digital; debido a que es un tema nuevo en el mercado peruano que está comenzando a ganar adeptos gracias al mayor acceso a avances tecnológicos y la necesidad de responder de manera oportuna a las nuevas necesidades de los clientes. Por ello, la presente investigación tiene como objetivo presentar conceptos claves de diferentes autores y mostrar algunos casos de éxito de implementación en el Perú; todo ello con la finalidad de introducir al lector en el entendimiento de la transformación digital. Con esta finalidad, se recolectan conceptos relevantes de diferentes autores, se investiga sobre la situación actual en el Perú y se recolectan casos de éxito de empresas pertenecientes a diferentes rubros de negocio. Finalmente, se concluye que la transformación digital es un enfoque que ayuda a repensar los modelos de negocio y el valor que se entrega a los clientes tomando en cuenta a los participantes de la cadena de valor y estrategias que involucran nuevas tecnologías; además, se llega a la conclusión de que su éxito depende de cambios culturales, organizacionales, legales, tecnológicos, en las condiciones de trabajo e infraestructura.

A novel 3D dental identification framework is presented. The objective is to develop a methodology to enable computer-automated matching of complex dental surfaces with possible missing regions for human identification. Thus far, there is no reported attempt at 3D dental identification given partially available dental casts or impressions. This approach overcomes a number of key hurdles in traditional 2D methods. Given the 3D digital form of a dental cast surface, the developed method will facilitate the search for the closest match in the database of digitized dental casts. A salient curvature matching algorithm (SCM) is proposed for pose estimation which includes algorithms for feature extraction, feature description and correspondence. The feature point extraction algorithm could extract more salient features and the correspondence algorithm is more robust for pose estimation compared to known works. Experimental results show 85.7% hit rate at rank-1 accuracy based on matching of 7 partial sets to a database of 100 full sets in significantly reduced retrieval time. The hit rate increases to 100% with parameter adjustment. This work aims to enable computer-aided 3D dental identification and the proposed method could be adjunctively used with the traditional 2D dental identification method, as the available dental source for identification is still primarily 2D radiographs. Limitations of the methodology and future directions in matching highly fragmented and partial dental surfaces are discussed.

Voices of Design (VOD) is an event that uses Zoom, an online meeting program, and Miro, a web-based whiteboard platform, to create a virtual space for group collaboration and research. This virtual meeting space and the strategies of the VOD event are discussed regarding their ability to support large and small group interaction, interpersonal communication, design thinking processes, collaboration, complex problem solving, and gamification activities all in real time. Four goals were set as metrics for the success of this event: 1) create a safe virtual meeting place to share ideas, collaborate, and build community, 2) design content that inspires participants and casts a shared vision for design as a catalyst for positive change at global, national, local and personal levels, 3) use the event to build common ground by solving worthy yet complex problems, and 4) actively engage participants in the online activities through a series of gamification strategies. This event, these online and digital platforms, and these four goals are discussed regarding best practices for service design for online and hybrid education and design research conducted in virtual space.

Commercialization of consumers’ personal data in the digital economy poses serious, both conceptual and practical, challenges to the traditional approach of European Union (EU) Consumer Law. This article argues that mass-spread, automated, algorithmic decision-making casts doubt on the foundational paradigm of EU consumer law: consent and autonomy. Moreover, it poses threats of discrimination and under- mining of consumer privacy. It is argued that the recent legislative reaction by the EU Commission, in the form of the ‘New Deal for Consumers’, was a step in the right direction, but fell short due to its continued reliance on consent, autonomy and failure to adequately protect consumers from indirect discrimination. It is posited that a focus on creating a contracting landscape where the consumer may be properly informed in material respects is required, which in turn necessitates blending the approaches of competition, consumer protection and data protection laws.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the digital content of publications of one issue of the daily All-Ukrainian newspaper “Den” (March 13-14, 2020). The author aims to identify the main thematic groups of digital designations, as well as to consider cases of justified and unsuccessful use of digital designations. Applying the content analysis method, the author identifies publications that contain numerical notations, determines the number of such notations and their affiliation with the main subject groups. Finds that the thematic group of digital designations “time” (58.6% of all digital designations) is much more dominant. This indicates that timing is the most important task of a newspaper text. The second largest group of digital designations is “measure” (15.8% of all digital designations). It covers dimensions and proportions, measurements of distance, weight, volume, and more. The third largest group of digital signage is money (8.2% of all digital signage), the fourth is numbering (5.2% of all digital signage), and the fifth is people (4.4% of all digital signage). The author focuses on the fact that the digits of the journalist’s text are both a source of information and a catch for the reader. Vivid indicators give the text a sense of accuracy. When referring digital data to the text, journalists must adhere to certain rules for the writing of ordinal numbers with incremental graduation; submission of dates; pointing to unique integers that are combined (or not combined) with units of physical quantities, monetary units, etc.; writing a numerator at the beginning of a sentence; unified presentation of data. This will greatly facilitate the reader’s perception of the information.

Agriculture is an important source of employment in Latin America and the Caribbean. In rural areas, some 54.6 per cent of the labour force is engaged in agricultural production. Although much of the region shares the same language and cultural heritage, the structure and scale of the agriculture sector varies significantly from country to country. Based on the review of 131 digital agriculture tools, this report, prepared by GSMA and IDB Lab, provides a market mapping and landscape analysis of the most prominent cases of digital disruption. It highlights some of the major trends observed in five digital agriculture use cases, identifies opportunities for digital interventions and concludes with recommendations for future engagement that could deliver long-term, sustainable economic and social benefits for smallholder farmers.

This paper reports the main findings from a survey on gender inequalities in digital literacy, use, and access among youth (18-25 years) in three parts of India – Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. In addition to gender, the survey was attentive to other inequalities too in its enquiry about the location (urban/rural), caste, household income, and education level of the respondents. This paper largely presents inequalities of gender as they intersect with urban/rural location since other variables, while important, yielded smaller numbers that need further careful analysis. The survey was informed by various contemporary developments – global growth in the use of digital technology for education, employment, and everyday lives; Covid-19 pandemic that has accelerated this growth; and the Digital India programme that aims to empower citizens through digital skilling. The survey, then, set out to explore the nature and implications of social inequalities in a society moving towards digital empowerment. The survey findings reveal overwhelming dependence among young people on smartphones for internet access and that entertainment and social media are the top uses of the internet. The survey also finds that women, particularly in rural areas, are less likely than men to exclusively own smartphones. That is, the smartphones that women have access to tend to be ‘household phones’, shared with other members of the family. This has consequences for the time and purposes that women are able to use smartphones and internet for. Based on these findings, the paper proposes avenues for further research on intersectional inequalities in digital literacy, access, and use. Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the state of the art of digital human models (DHMs) applied in the field of transportation and automotive engineering, to better inform the development of new models for such use cases. To this end, the proposed systematic review will address the following questions: What is the general trend of research in this field? Which specific use cases, methodologies, and human models are being more widely studied or utilized than others? How can we describe such study characteristics in a structured and quantitative manner? Eligibility criteria: Eligible publications included in the review are screened according to the following criteria: (a) The publication must be a full-text article published in an academic journal or in the proceedings of an academic conference, (b) The publication must be final and the article must be in press, (c) The language of the publication must be English, (d) The publication must apply digital human models in a transportation or automotive engineering context, (e) No particular restrictions are placed on the country and/or region of origin of the publication.

Are firms in Latin America and the Caribbean lagging in terms of their adoption of digital technologies? Using the most updated and, in many cases, new data, this publication provides a 360-degree assessment on the adoption of technologies ranging from artificial intelligence, big data, and the internet of things, to “backbone” tools such as cloud computing and basic digital technologies (e.g., the percent of firms with websites). On certain dimensions, some firms in the region compare favorably with firms in OECD countries. However, in general, as with artificial intelligence and big data, the data point to considerable gaps in uptake. With a comprehensive outlook, this work also assesses enabling conditions for digital technology adoption and current trends in the digital economy.

The increase in access to digital technologies is opening up opportunities for governments in Latin America and the Caribbean to offer digital public services. However, there is scarce evidence regarding the benefits and costs of potential projects which makes it difficult for governments in the region to prioritize digital projects for implementation. As part of the report titled “Digitalizing Public Services: Opportunities for Latin America and the Caribbean,” produced by the Inter-American Development Bank (Cristia and Vlaicu, 2022), a set of cost-benefit analyses of the digital public services were performed. The present document complements the mentioned report by presenting the methodology, assumptions, and results of these cost-benefit analyses. To increase the comparability of the results across digital public services evaluated, common assumptions and a standardized methodology were used. Moreover, contextual conditions were fixed across projects by estimating results for a base country, Peru. The robustness of the results were examined by replicating the analysis for Chile, El Salvador, and Jamaica. Digital public services were evaluated in three sectors: education, health and government administrative services (e.g. production of identity cards). For each sector, the benefits and costs of two digital projects were estimated. For some these digital projects, only one policy option was assessed but, in other cases, several policy options were analyzed. A total of 11 policy options were assessed as part of this exercise. Results indicate that, in general, the policy options analyzed produced positive net present values. However, there is wide variation in the net present value across policy options suggesting that governments should carefully evaluate which digital public services they should prioritize for implementation.
