Abstract The Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) provides low cost onsite sanitation to residents living in informal settlements. Wastewater management through agriculture prevents environmental pollution and promotes sustainable agriculture. This study investigated the effects of fertigation with DEWATS effluent to field capacity in three South African soils under a banana crop. The experiment was conducted as a complete randomised design in a greenhouse with two irrigation water treatments (DEWATS effluent vs municipal tap water irrigation + fertiliser) × three soil types (Ia, Cf and Se) and four replicates over 728 days. Data were collected on crop growth, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake and dynamics in the soil. The DEWATS effluent significantly (p < 0.05) increased N and P uptake and soil NH+4-N and extractable P concentrations. Furthermore, DEWATS effluent fertigation significantly (p < 0.05) increased N leaching from the Ia soil and P leaching from the Cf soil. Nitrogen and phosphorus leaching from DEWATS was lower than the tap water irrigation + fertiliser treatment. There was, however, excess N and P accumulation from the DEWATS than the irrigation + fertiliser treatment, which would cause environmental concerns from runoff and leaching losses in the medium to long term.

Abstract A DEWATS (decentralized wastewater treatment system) is an alternative for expanding sanitation. In Brazil, DEWATS is acknowledged by law and is part of the National Sanitation Plan strategy for achieving the treatment of 85.6% of all the generated wastewater by 2033, improving the current treatment index of 49%. This review's aim is to identify DEWATS studies in Brazil and to verify their potential for narrowing the national wastewater treatment deficit. Hence, aspects such as cost, maintenance, and efficiency were assessed. The archival research method (ARM) was used to identify papers published in the last 20 years through the scientific databases of Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science. Data regarding the general characteristics of each study were collected and compared to Brazilian environmental regulation and sanitation status. The results showed the evaluation of different technologies such as DEWATS, highlighting their flexibility and potential use in 79% of Brazilian counties. However, although 81% of the studies conducted performance analysis, none covered the main parameters required by Brazilian law. Although legal gaps for DEWATS improvement and consolidation have been identified and the interest in studying DEWATS has been increasing in the last five years, many barriers to their widespread use remain.

Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) are increasingly being recognized by decision makers and city developers across the world as an option for service delivery in densely populated low-income areas. However, little knowledge and field-data are available on some key design-, operation- and monitoring-parameters. This paper addresses these gaps by presenting data on per capita wastewater production of communities connected to DEWATS, hydraulic peak flow factors, per capita BOD5 load estimates, biogas-production of DEWATS biogas digesters, DEWATS effluent characteristics and their fluctuation over time and settled reactor sludge characteristics concerning TS and VS concentrations, specific methanogenic activity (SMA), effect of sludge storage on SMA and accumulation rates. The investigations have been conducted over five years at 24 communal systems in Indonesia, India and South Africa.

Under the Indonesian PPSP (Accelerated Sanitation Development for Human Settlements Program) thousands of new DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems) may be realized in the coming five years. Taking the massive scale of planned implementation into consideration an evaluation of the technical and financial-economic aspects and users' involvement for three different types of DEWATS was performed. Evaluated systems included (1) Settler (Set)+Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR)+Anaerobic Filter (AF), (2) Digester+Set+ABR+AF and (3) Settler, equalization, activated sludge, clarifier, filtration. All three systems complied with the current regulations. System 3 suggested the best overall performance on selected parameters in the monitored period. A clear reduction in specific investment costs per household was found with an increasing number of households per system. Only daily, regular operational costs were recovered from fees collected by the community, whereas costs for desludging, major repairs and capital and replacement costs were not. Surveys with users showed a different degree of involvement of local men and women in the planning stages of the project for the systems. Recommendations are provided to scale up the introduction of DEWATS in a more sustainable way in the framework of a city wide sanitation strategy.

Abstract Decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) using anaerobic treatment are increasingly being considered for wastewater treatment with options for non-potable water reuse at the community scale. One challenge for ensuring performance and reliability of DEWATS is the lack of suitable on-site sensors to monitor failure or contamination events. In this study, the aim was to use in situ fluorescence sensors to track the performance of a DEWATS, consisting of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) coupled to anaerobic filter (AF) and constructed wetland (CW) treatment processes. A submersible in situ fluorometer equipped with tryptophan (TRP) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) sensors was deployed in each chamber of the ABR-AF-CW system, and results showed that TRP fluorescence was preferentially removed over CDOM fluorescence throughout the system. Significant relationships between TRP fluorescence and chemical oxygen demand (COD) also suggested that TRP fluorescence could be used as a surrogate for COD and soluble COD concentrations. Strong agreement between results obtained from the 1D in situ fluorometer and those obtained from a 3D benchtop fluorometer lends further support to the use of in situ fluorescence sensors to track DEWATS performance.

Decentralized wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) are widely used for the treatment of wastewater originating from residences, institutes and municipalities, specifically in South India. Most of these STPs are denounced owing to failures on several fronts including design, operation and maintenance, installation and monitoring. A comprehensive review and evaluation of STPs was timely, in order to derive sound conclusions and recommendations for future wastewater management strategies. The objective of the present study was to conduct an independent evaluation of already existing decentralized STPs in South India. The technologies assessed were Aerated lagoon (AL), Extended aeration (EA), Anaerobic filter/Vortex put forward by Centre for Scientific Research (CSR VORTEX), Constructed Wetland (DEWATS others), Membrane bioreactor (MBR) and Moving bed Biofilm reactor (MBBR). Among the various technologies evaluated, MBR exhibited the highest total COD, BOD and solids removal efficiency. Pathogen count was lowest in MBR, followed by MBBR and AL. Nutrient removal in terms of ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen was highest in DEWATS. Effective hours of continuous operation enabled improved plant performance. In case of natural treatment technology such as DEWATS, energy requirement is quite low, whereas conventional treatment technologies such as EA necessitate considerably high demand of energy, requiring few personnel to operate the system. Innovative high cell density systems such as MBBR and MBR entail significant power consumption and elaborate maintenance, requiring large number of skilled professionals. The major reasons for failure of STPs were related to mechanical, electrical and labour problems. Regular monitoring and maintenance is required with due diligence in all the treatment technologies for proper functioning.

Despite the low rate of sewer service coverage in developing countries, especially in small towns and rural areas, decentralized wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) are alternatives to ensure public health. Nonetheless, understanding the physical or functional aspects of these system constructions remains difficult when there is no bibliography, a teaching professional, or even a prototype that allows technical conclusions about specific processes. Although resource combination in a BIM environment works as a facilitator to obtain compact and sustainable results, the purpose of this collaboration is not only to simplify the design process. This paper aims to propose a way to use BIM concepts as a learning tool throughout the modeling process. To do so, we developed a BIM template with specific DEWATS characteristics in order to provide not only information needed for construction, but also information that can favor learning. We measured how much the level of development (LOD) can influence learning about these systems during the design process, directing users to make the best implementation choices. The adoption of qualitative analysis of a questionnaire answered by three groups of professionals (general CADD software users, BIM software with generic template users, and BIM software with specific DEWATS template users) allowed us to identify differences among them, such as the number of DEWATS known, considered LOD, learning, and handicaps in the design of these systems. The results pointed out that the BIM tools can influence learning about new and unknown specific systems, which is directly related to the LOD of a model.

The decentralised wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) is an onsite sanitation technology that can be used in areas away from municipal sewerage networks. The discharge of effluent emanating from DEWATS into water bodies may cause pollution. Agricultural use of the effluent may improve crop yields and quality thereby contributing to food security in low-income communities. There are drawbacks to the agricultural use of treated wastewater. Therefore, the study assessed the crop, environmental and health risks when irrigating with anaerobic filter (AF) effluent using the Decision Support System (DSS) of the South African Water Quality Guideline model, in four South African agroecological regions, three soil types, two irrigation systems and three different crops. The model was parameterised using AF effluent characterisation data and simulated for 45 years. The model predicted that there are no negative impacts for using AF effluent on soil quality parameters (root zone salinity, soil permeability and oxidisable carbon loading), leaf scorching and irrigation equipment. The problems were reported for nutrient loading (N and P) in maize and microbial contamination in cabbage and lettuce. It was recommended that the effluent should be diluted when used for maize production and advanced treatment should be explored to allow unrestricted agricultural use.

Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) such as disseminated by the Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) are increasingly being recognized by decision makers across the world as an option for service delivery in densely populated low-income areas. However, little practical experience has been gathered methodologically on basic engineering and performance aspects surrounding these systems. This thesis investigates full-scale anaerobic reactors of communal DEWATS implemented in tropical regions in order to consolidate the basis of future design and support monitoring, operation and maintenance procedures. Special focus is laid on the operation of the Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) as the core technology of DEWATS. Field research has been conducted for over four years at numerous communal systems in Indonesia, India and South Africa in order to (i) verify the generally used parameter values for DEWATS design and operation, (ii) identify factors limiting the treatment efficiency of existing systems in the field and (iii) investigate the performance of DEWATS and DEWATS treatment steps (especially ABRs) under tropical field conditions in terms of effluent concentration, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal, sludge stabilisation and sludge activity. Field data on average per capita wastewater production in DEWATS implementation areas, long term fluctuations and peak-flow values are presented. General per capita organic load and per capita nutrient load, per capita biogas production in digesters and per capita sludge accumulation in ABRs are estimated. Based on available data and field observations, treatment limiting factors are hypothesised to be rain-water intrusion, general under-loading, organic under-loading and elevated raw-water salinity in coastal areas. Effluent measurements performed at one hundred nine systems in Indonesia indicated guaranteed maximum concentrations of 200 mg CODt l-1 for anaerobic DEWATS treatment effluent if the treated wastewater is non-saline. ABR COD reduction of four case studies was poor in three cases and fair in one case. Sludge accumulation rates indicated good sludge stabilisation and sludge activity in all four systems. Anaerobic Filters (AF) contributed in all three case studies, in which they were part of the plant design, significantly to COD reduction. Nutrient effluent concentrations were comparably high. Large fractions of effluent organics were found to be biodegradable. It is hypothesised that system treatment would improve significantly if maximum hydraulic load was lower, general organic load was higher and therefore both close to design estimation. It is thus proposed to control the amount of storm water intruding the systems, increase feed concentration through partial grey-water exclusion and reduce the nutrient load in system effluent through partial urine diversion. It is further proposed to reduce the HRT of the settler below 10 h in order to increase the organic load to the ABR. It is further hypothesised that systems could be operated at higher hydraulic dry weather load than currently assumed since active anaerobic digestion appears to be capable of establishing itself under extreme hydraulic pressure. This may lead to a considerable reduction of building costs. Anaerobic digestion modelling with the existing ADM-3P model confirmed that observed sludge accumulation rates indicate active hydrolytic systems. The model could however not be used to produce soluble COD effluent concentration benchmarks due to its sensitivity to methanogenic rate constants. The general view held for anaerobic reactors treating wastewater with high solid content is that hydrolysis is the rate-limiting degradation step. Die durch die Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) verbreiteten Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DEWATS) werden international von Entscheidungsträgern zunehmend als Möglichkeit angesehen, kommunale Abwasserreinigung in dichtbesiedelten, einkommensschwachen Gegenden zu ermöglichen. Allerdings wurden bislang wenig praktische Erfahrungen methodisch über grundlegende Aspekte der Anlagendimensionierung und Anlagenleistungsfähigkeit aufgenommen. Im Rahmen dieser Dissertation wurden anaerobe Reaktoren kommunaler DEWATS unter tropischen Feldbedingungen untersucht, um eine Datengrundlage für zukünftige Dimensionierung, Wartung und Betrieb, als auch Monitoring der Anlagen zu schaffen. Schwerpunkt wurde dabei auf den Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) als Kerntechnologie von DEWATS gelegt. Felduntersuchungen wurden in der Zeit von mehr als vier Jahren an zahlreichen kommunalen DEWATS in Indonesien, Indien und Südafrika durchgeführt, um (i) die gängig gewählten Parameterwerte für Anlagen-Dimensionierung und -Betrieb zu überprüfen, (ii) leistungslimitierende Faktoren im Feldbetrieb zu identifizieren und um (iii) die Leistungsfähigkeit von DEWATS und DEWATS-Reinigungsstufen (insbesondere des ABRs) unter tropischen Feldbedingungen bezüglich Abflusskonzentrationen, Reduzierung des Chemischen Sauerstoffbedarfs (CSB), Schlammstabilisierung und Schlammaktivität zu untersuchen. Basierend auf den Untersuchungsergebnissen, wurden durchschnittliche Einwohnergleichwerte, Langzeitvariationen und Faktoren für Zuflussspitzen für kommunale Abwasserproduktion in DEWATS-Zielbevölkerungsgruppen präsentiert. Ferner werden allgemeine Pro-Kopf-CSB-Frachten, -Ammoniumfrachten und -Phosphorfrachten, die Pro-Kopf-Biogasproduktion in kommunalen Biogasanlagen sowie die Pro-Kopf-Schlammakkumulation in ABRs abgeschätzt. Auf Felduntersuchungen basierend, wurden Fremdwassereinfluss, generelle Unterbelastung, organische Unterbelastung und erhöhte Frischwassersalinität in Küstengebieten als leistungslimitierende Faktoren im Feldbetrieb identifiziert. An 109 indonesischen Anlagen durchgeführte Abflusskonzentrationsmessungen ließen auf eine garantierte Abflusskonzentration der anaeroben Reaktoren von 200 mg CSB l-1 schließen, wenn der negative Einfluss von erhöhter Frischwassersalinität ausgeschlossen werden kann. Der CSB-Abbau durch ABRs in vier detailliert untersuchten DEWATS war gering in drei Fällen und befriedigend in einem Fall. Anaerobe Filter (AF) trugen in den drei Fällen, in denen sie Teil der Anlagenkonfigurationen waren, signifikant zur CSB-Reduzierung bei. Ammonium- und Phoshorkonzentrationen in allen Reaktorabläufen waren vergleichsweise hoch. Ein großer Anteil des CSBs in Reaktorabläufen war biologisch abbaubar. Es wird die Hypothese aufgestellt, dass sich die Leistungsfähigkeiten der Anlagen signifikant verbessern würden, wären die Anlagenbelastungen den Auslegungswerten ähnlicher, d.h., wären die maximalen hydraulischen Belastungen geringer und die organischen Belastungen höher. Es wird deshalb geraten, den Fremdwasserzufluss zu minimieren, die Anlagenzulaufkonzentration durch partielle Grauwasserversickerung zu erhöhen und die Ammonium- und Phoshorkonzentration im Zulauf durch partiellen Urinabschlag zu verringern. Es wird außerdem vorgeschlagen, die hydraulische Aufenthaltszeit in Absetzbecken (settlers) auf zehn Stunden zu begrenzen, um so die organische Belastung der ABRs zu erhöhen. Ferner wird die Hypothese aufgestellt, dass Anlagen unter höherer Trockenwetterbelastung als bislang angenommen betrieben werden können, da aktiver anaerober Abbau auch unter extremen hydraulischen Belastungen möglich erscheint. Dies könnte zu einer signifikanten Senkung der Baukosten führen. Die Modellierung anaerober Abbauprozesse mit dem existierenden ADM-3P-Modell bestätigten, dass im Feld beobachtete Schlammakkumulationsraten auf eine aktive Hydrolyse schließen lassen. Das Modell konnte jedoch nicht genutzt werden, um Bezugswerte für den gelösten CSB im Ablauf der Anlagen zu erhalten, da es eine vergleichsweise hohe Sensitivität in Bezug auf die Raten für Methanogenese aufwies. Die allgemein anerkannte Sichtweise ist, dass die Hydrolyse den geschwindigkeitsbestimmenden Abbauschritt bei der anaeroben Behandlung feststoffreicher Abwässer darstellt. John Dewey föddes år 1859, samma år som Charles Darwin bröt ny mark för människan genom sin Theory of Species. Genom Darwin skulle grunden för det kollektiva mänskliga tänkandet och förståelsen av oss själva aldrig förbli detsamma. För Dewey precis som för Darwin är det förståelsen av människan och hennes värld som är det intressanta.

Denna uppsats är en närläsning av Deweys verk Demokrati och utbildning som publicerades för första gången 1916. Verket som är skrivet på tidigt 1900-tal har haft ett stort inflytande på pedagogiskt tänkande generellt, men är också ett av de verkligt intressanta arbetena rörande människan och utbildningens roll för det demokratiska samhället. Verket är av idémässigt fundamental betydelse för den filosofiska tanketradition som kallas pragmatism då Dewey fångar upp den bärande idén om människan i samhället som en del av världen och som beroende av en bra utbildning.

Uppsatsen har för avsikt att förmedla och tolka de tankegångar som Dewey låter framträda i Demokrati och utbildning. Arbetet har resulterat i de sex tematiska delarna som är ordnade under rubrikerna; Utbildningens demokratifunktion, Individens kunskap om världen, Att tänka, Kunskapsteori, Moral samt Deweys filosofibegrepp. Olika teorier om sanning presenteras och pragmatismens sanningsteori behandlas. Avslutningsvis konstateras att det som vi idag ser som filosofi en gång startade genom utbildning och att den pragmatiska filosofin i första hand påverkar samhället genom utbildningen.


John Dewey was born in 1859. That same year Charles Darwin published his Theory of Species. After Darwin, the understanding of human and human thinking of itself never again would be the same. For Charles Darwin and John Dewey the understanding of human and humans role in the world is the most interesting and important part of knowledge.

This essay is a reading of Deweys Demokracy and Education witch first was published in in the year of 1916. The main part of this work is in the six parts; The education and its democracy principle, The individualls knowledge of the world, to think, theory of knowledge, moral and Dewey´s philosophy.

The essay will also explain that the work of Dewey (Democracy and Education) has a huge impact on philosophy in the arena of education. It is also very important for the American philosophy called Pragmatism formed and grunded by Dewey, William James and Charles Sanders Peirce.

The work was written in the early 20th century and catch the idea of human need and hunger for education and also the importance of good education for the society in witch humans as individualls in groups are living. A number of theories of truth is represented and the philosophy called Pragmatism is represented as having it´s own theory of truth.

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a democracia no pensamento do pragmatista estadunidense John Dewey (1859-1952) e sua contribuição para a teoria política contemporânea. Num primeiro momento, se examina o pensamento político do autor, ressaltando-se as implicações que o antifundacionismo e o contextualismo sugerem. Já o confronto do pensamento de Dewey com críticas de Richard Rorty, Richard Bernstein, Robert Westbrook e Alfonso Damico sugere que, ao mesmo tempo em que o vocabulário do estadunidense é refém de imperativos de sua época, deixa grande contribuição para a teoria contemporânea; a de que a democracia é o modelo político que permite a geração de novas formas de vida e sua permanentemente recriação, a partir do contínuo confronto com a prática, de forma a mapear trajetórias para que desejos e aspirações da sociedade sejam concretizados.
This dissertation aims to study the thought of the American pragmatist John Dewey (1859-1952) on democracy and its contribution to the contemporary political theory. At first, the political thought of the author is analyzed, and the anti-foundationalism’s and contextualism’s repercussions are highlighted. The tension between Dewey’s thoughts and the ideas of Richard Rorty, Richard Bernstein, Robert Westbrook and Alfonso Damico suggest that, if in the one hand Dewey’s vocabulary is a victim of his own time, it brings a great contribution to contemporary theory. This contribution is expressed though the idea that democracy is the political model that allows the creation of forms of life and their permanent recreation, from the clash between theory and practice, aiming at the designing of trajectories that will give life to the desires and aspirations of society.

En este trabajo, proponemos una definición operacional de la temperatura local de un campo cuántico usando detectores Unruh-DeWitt, de forma similar a la empleada en los efectos Unruh y Hawking. Con esta definición, un sistema cuántico inhomogéneo en equilibrio puede tener diferentes temperaturas locales, en analogía con el teorema de Tolman-Ehrenfest en relatividad general. Hemos estudiado la distribución de la temperatura local en el estado fundamental de un sistema fermiónico con términos de hopping en un espacio curvo. La temperatura observada tiende a cero conforme el acoplo termómetrosistema, g, disminuye. Además, para valores pequeños pero finitos de g, mostramos que el producto de la temperatura local observada y el logaritmo de la velocidad local de la luz es aproximadamente constante. Nuestras predicciones son susceptibles de comprobación en sistemas de átomos ultrafríos.
We propose an operational definition for the local temperature of a quantum field employing Unruh-DeWitt detectors, as used in the study of the Unruh and Hawking effects. With this definition, an inhomogeneous quantum system in equilibrium can have different local temperatures, in analogy with the Tolman-Ehrenfest theorem from general relativity. We have studied the local temperature distribution on the ground state of hopping fermionic systems on a curved background. The observed temperature tends to zero as the thermometer-system coupling, g, vanishes. Yet, for small but finite values of g, we show that the product of the observed local temperature and the logarithm of the local speed of light is approximately constant. Our predictions should be testable on ultracold atomic systems.
