The taxonomic status of the lion’s mane jellyfish, Cyanea, of south-eastern Australia has been unsettled since 1884 when medusae from Port Jackson were described as a new variety of C. annaskala von Lendenfeld rather than assigned to C. rosea Quoy & Gaimard described previously from the same location. Cyanea annaskala was later combined with C. mullerianthe Haacke then synonymised with C. capillata (Linnaeus), which is now considered a circumglobal species, before being resurrected as a subspecies, C. capillata annaskala, in 1986. Here I demonstrate that Cyanea in southern New South Wales and Cyanea in Tasmania and Victoria constitute two distinct morphological groups separated by >10% sequence difference in both cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and internal transcribed spacer 1. Moreover, these clades are molecularly distinct (>6%) from C. capillata collected in its North Sea type locality. Analyses of medusae from another type locality, Port Philip Bay, Victoria, demonstrate that Cyanea annaskala von Lendenfeld is a valid species. Cyanea rosea is tentatively resurrected for medusae from New South Wales, pending confirmation by analyses of medusae from the vicinity of Sydney. Assigning other south-eastern Australian Cyanea specimens from museum collections to species is difficult in the absence of molecular analyses because biogeographic and morphological inferences sometimes conflict. Integrative molecular and morphological analyses of medusae from type localities may offer the most robust approach to straightening out the often convoluted systematics of scyphomedusae.

The lipid components of nerve-rich tissues from the jellyfish Cyanea capillata were purified by multiple differential extractions of a single tissue pellet and detected with various chemical spray reagents following separation by thin-layer chromatography. The results indicate that gangliosides are completely absent from Cyanea capillata neurones, that the major sterol is not cholesterol, and that the five major phosphorus-containing lipids do not co-migrate with conventional phospholipid standards. The atypical lipid environment of Cyanea capillata neurones may account for some of their unusual physiological and pharmacological properties.

Octopus cyanea tersebar luas di perairan Nusa Tenggara Timur, dijual pada pasar-pasar tradisional dan diekspor ke Eropa. O. cyanea diperdagangkan untuk konsumsi, namun demikian belum terdapat informasi nutrisi yang memadai terkait organisme ini di Nusa Tenggara Timur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan kandungan nutrisi utama dari O. cyanea berupa kadar air, karbohidrat, lemak, protein, abu, dan serat kasar. Sampel gurita diperoleh dari tangkapan nelayan di Teluk Kupang yang berlabuh di Pasir Panjang Kota Kupang dan dari perairan Perumaan-Nangahale Kabupaten Sikka. Preparasi sampel: masing-masing lokasi diambil tiga sampel dari trip penangkapan yang berbeda. Delapan tentakel dari setiap sampel dipotong, dicampur, dan dihaluskan untuk analisis analisis proksimat meliputi: kadar lemak dengan metode Soxhlet, kadar protein menggunakan metode Kjedahl, penentuan kadar air, kadar abu, dan serat kasar mengacu kepada AOAC. Perhitungan terhadap hasil dianalisis menggunakan rata-rata untuk setiap lokasi pengambilan sampel. Hasil penelitian menemukan komponen terbesar O. cyanea adalah air 70,79-74,36%, protein 13,55-18,41%, karbohidrat 5,44-6,37%, abu 2,23-3,43%, lemak 2,20-2,22% dan serat kasar 1,51-2,54%. Informasi ini dapat digunakan konsumen untuk memperkirakan bahaya yang mungkin berisiko pada kondisi kesehatan tertentu. The octopus fishery in Zanzibar is an essential activity of coastal communities. To assist with developing fisheries management plans, baseline information on the feeding of Octopus cyanea (Gray, 1849) was collected in relation to sex and maturity stages. The feeding habits and diet composition of 543 O. cyanea were studied over a period of 12 months at Paje, Kizimkazi, Chwaka Bay and Nungwi. Samples at each site were collected on two days per month during spring tide. Digestive tract contents revealed that O. cyanea preyed on 36 species of crustaceans, molluscs and fishes, with crabs a major prey item. The number of prey species in a single stomach ranged from one to six. O. cyanea in Zanzibar is therefore a generalist predator with a mixed diet. The octopus gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated a peak breeding season in June to October, which correlated with low prey consumption. Mature octopuses ingested a small amount of food from mainly small sessile prey. Females consumed less food than males of similar maturity stages, suggesting that they ate less or had higher digestion rates. The information is useful for developing fisheries management plans for the octopus fishery in Zanzibar.

Pomponia cyanea Fraser, 1948 from the southern Western Ghats, of peninsular India is redescribed based on the types and fresh specimens with additional data on distribution, morphometrics, and structure of male genitalia. The validity of P. zebra Bliven, 1964, originally described from the Anamalai Hills is discussed. A study of fresh specimens and holotype images of P. zebra revealed no difference in general morphology, wing venation, or structure of male genitalia so as to separate it from P. cyanea, and hence P. zebra is treated as a junior synonym of P. cyanea Fraser, 1948, syn. nov. The taxonomic status of Terpnosia polei (Henry, 1931) from Sri Lanka is revised based on male morphology and is transferred to its original genus as Pomponia polei Henry, 1931, comb. nov. A key to males of known species of Pomponia of Western Ghats is provided.

Pseudobaeospora cyanea, a rare basidiomycete belonging to an underinvestigated genus, is currently recorded from only three localities of the Iberian Peninsula. Moreover, to date no sequences of this rare species have been deposited in GenBank. In this paper a new collection from NW Italy is reported with detailed morphological descriptions and iconography. The first ITS and LSU sequences for the species are provided and uploaded to GenBank, and the taxonomic placement of P. cyanea within the genus is discussed.

The mature larva of the weevil species Orobitis cyanea (Linnaeus, 1758), one of only two Palaearctic members of the supertribe Orobitiditae, is re-described, while the pupa is described for the first time. The biology of this species was studied at two sites in Germany. It was reared from seed capsules of Viola canina L. (Violaceae), and feeding holes were observed on V. riviniana Rchb. Adults of Orobitis cyanea and O. nigrina Reitter, 1885, specialists of Viola, show a well-developed escape mechanism, to which contribute a smooth surface, a rounded, nearly spherical body shape, and a seed-imitating thanatosis behaviour. The molytine weevil Leiosoma cribrum (Gyllenhal, 1834), the only other known weevil specialist of Viola in Europe, has a smooth surface, also, and is the most spherical species of the genus. The unique characters of the larva and pupa of Orobitis cyanea are discussed in regard to the systematic position of this taxon.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The gastrointestinal morphology and the distribution of the different types of mucin secreting goblet cells were investigated in three mammalian insectivorous species, namely A. spinosissimus, C. cyanea and A. hottentotus. The aim of the study was to provide a comprehensive morphological comparison between the different species. Another aim was to illustrate and compare the distribution of mucins (neutral, sulfo- and sialomucins) in the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of these species, in order to better understand the quality of the biofilm in the GIT. Mucins secreted onto the surface of the GIT have an effect on the colonisation of microflora in the mucosal layer, constructing a biofilm which protects the GIT surface from opportunistic pathogens. The shape, proportional length, and proportional surface areas of the different gastrointestinal regions were recorded and compared in the three species. Histochemical staining methods were used to detect and to distinguish between neutral, sulfo- and sialomucins. The number of goblet cells in the GIT containing each of the above mucins in the epithelium lining the surface or crypts was quantified, and the data expressed as the number of neutral, sulfo- or sialomucin containing goblet cells per mm2 of the surface or crypt epithelium. In all three species the stomach was uncompartmentalised. The internal aspect of the stomach in A. spinosissimus was hemi-glandular, containing stratified squamous epithelium in the fundus, with glandular epithelium in the body and pyloric region. However, C. cyanea and A. hottentotus had wholly glandular stomachs. A. spinosissimus was the only species studied that had a caecum which demonstrated transverse mucosal folds and V-shaped mucosal folds in the proximal colon. Both C. cyanea and A. hottentotus had villi up to the distal part of the GIT. Longitudinal mucosal folds were present in the distal colon. The GITs of both C. cyanea and A. hottentotus showed little morphological differentiation namely a simple, glandular stomach and the lack of a caecum. Mixed (neutral and acid) mucins and mixed acid (sulfo- and sialomucins) mucin secreting goblet cells were prominent mucin cell types in all three mammalian insectivorous species. Despite these general similarities, marked differences were observed in the qualitative expression and distribution of the three types of mucins throughout the GIT. The overall similarity between the three insectivores and other distantly related mammalian species suggests that mixed mucin secreting goblet cell types are prominent contributors to the maintenance of the intestinal biofilm in the majority of mammals, irrespective of their diet or taxonomy.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die bestudering van die morfologie van die spysverteringskanaal (SVK) en die verspreiding van die verskillende musien produserende bekerselle was in drie insek-etende soogdier spesies uitgevoer, naamlik in A. spinosissimus, C. cyanea en A. hottentotus. Die doel van die studie was om „n omvattende morfologiese vergelyking te maak tussen die drie spesies, sowel as om die verspreiding van die verskillende musiene te beskryf in die SVK. Kennis van die verspreiding van die verskillende tipes musiene (neutral, sulfaat en nie-sulfaat bevattende musiene) kan moontlik inligting verskaf aangaande die kwaliteit van die biofilm in the SVK. Ten spyte van die algemene ooreenkomste, was daar merkwaardige verskille in die getalle en verspreiding van die verskillende musiene in die SVK. Die algemene ooreenkomste tussen die drie insektivore soogdier spesies met soogdiere van ander families, stel voor dat die gemende musien sekreterende beker selle „n prominente bydrae maak tot die onderhoud van die biofilm in the SVK in die meerderheid van soogdiere, ongeag van hul dieet of spesie klassifikasie.

In order to gain better understanding of climate change effects on ecosystems, it is necessary to study the response of different species to predicted climate change. Dragonflies are, due to their ecology, a suitable organism group for conducting such studies. In this pilot study we examined the response in growth- and mortality rate to increased ambient temperatures in an experimental set-up of three temperature levels (20°C, 22°C och 24°C) in larvae of three species from the Aeshnidae family (Aeshna grandis, Aeshna cyanea and Anax imperator). A. imperator were, due to insufficient number of collected specimens, excluded in the 22°C temperature regime. The studied species are reproducing in Sweden, but A. grandis and A. cyanea are native, whereas A. imperator is considered newly established since it was first discovered in Sweden in the early 2000’s. Our results show that A. grandis and A. cyanea reacted positively to an increased ambient temperature, in terms of growth rates. However, the response to increased temperatures differed between the two species as A. grandis showed both higher growth- and mortality rate, compared to A. cyanea. Thus, we assume that both species are likely to benefit from the ongoing climate change, but that interactions between them may change. Further studies are required to elucidate how the two species will be affected in presence of newly established species, such as A. imperator. Although, based on our results, the competitiveness of both native species might increase with rising temperatures - which should be considered in future conservation planning.

Catch dynamics, fisheries biology and socio-economic dependence are described for the artisanal fishery for Octopus cyanea at three study sites (Kwale. Jibondo, and Mtwara) along the coat of Tanzania. A total of 23,165 octopuses were measured and sexed from 3,514 individual catches. FIShing effort was shown to be 2.9 times greater at Msangamkuu compared to Jibondo and nearly two times more than Kwale. Number of relaxation days between fishing events, when the octopus stock are able to recover through growth and immigration, was shown to be greater at Iibondo than for the other two sites. Marked reductions in catch landings, mean individual weight, catch per unit effort (kg) and size distributions are reported for Msangamkuu and Kwale when compared to Jibondo. Abundance of octopus was however, higher at the former sites most likely in response to predator and competition release. Stock size and biomass (kg) were calculated for Msangamkuu using a De-Lury depletion method and results extrapolated to the other two sites. Despite higher abundance at Msangamkuu and Kwale mean overall biomass (kg) was 36% and 14% respectively lower tban the mean biomass estimate for Jibondo. Spatial comparison of fishing impacts between sites using a surplus production model suggested Jibondo to be more productive and fishing pressure sustainable. In contrast, Msangamkuu was indicated to be seriously overtished and Kwale somewhere in between. Although, Bhattacharya modal progression analyses separated multiple size modes in monthly samples growth analyses were unsuccessful due to the lack of a clear corresponding pattern of modal progression in monthly size distributions. Length weight relationships varied between sites and sexes. All length weight relationships were negative allometric. Size reductions at Kwale and Msangambru may be impacting on reproductive output with a 40% reduction in the number of mature males at Msangamkuu and 24% reduction at Kwale when compared to Jibondo. Fewer mature females were observed at Msangamkuu and Kwale but even at Jibondo mature females accounted for only 2.2% of the catch. Results suggest spawning activity takes place in deeper water ( > 4m) below the fisbed zone. Nonetheless, enough females would have to reach brooding size at each site to contribute to the reproductive stock. Size at first maturity for females was estimated to be 1800g. Only 3.9% of the octopus at Kwale and 1.2% at Msangamkuu weigh more than 1800g compared to 17% at Jibondo. Fecundity was shown to increase with size. Breeding activity is likely to be year round but maturity peaks were evident for June and July and October to November. The den enrichment experiment indicated a clear preference for concrete dens over PVC pipe. Overall density increased by 10% subsequent to den placement but dens were shown in reef areas not to be limiting. The benefit of den enrichment was therefore ambiguous but could be initiated using a phased approach to gauge effectiveness. The artisanal octopus fisheries make an important contnbution to the local economy. population growth and fisher and trader immigrations were noted as the greatest threats to the octopus fishery by fishers. Awareness of relevant marine resource use issues was shown to be high yet enthusiasm for management varied between sites. The first descriptive details of the octopus fauna of Tanzania are provided. Implications for management of the octopus fishery and a series of proposed management actions are provided for discussion between relevant stakeholders.

L'étirage à froid de tubes en acier nécessite une préparation de leur surface. Celle-ci implique l'élimination de la couche d'oxydes superficiels ou décapage. Les tubes sont alors plongés dans un bain d'acide sulfurique à 70°C. Impureté de l'acier, le cuivre est mis en solution lors du décapage puis recouvre la surface du tube au-delà d'une certaine concentration ce qui gêne les opérations ultérieures. Par cette étude, nous nous proposons de mettre au point un procédé d'élimination du cuivre du bain de décapage basé sur le couplage de l'extraction liquide-liquide et du dépôt électrochimique. Les contraintes sont : le cuivre est peu concentré alors que l'acide sulfurique et le fer le son et le traitement du bain doit s'effectuer à 70°C. Nous avons donc déterminé la composition du solvant d'extraction qui garantit la sélectivité d'extraction du cuivre II vis-à-vis des cations du fer, une grande vitesse de transfert et la meilleure résistance à la dégradation. Notre choix s'est porté sur une solution comprenant un acide thiophosphinique et une salicylaldoxime dans le dodécane. Le cuivre est ensuite transféré dans une solution aqueuse de thiourée et d'acide sulfurique qui répond aux exigences antagonistes de désextraire le cuivre du solvant de manière efficace tout en permettant le dépôt électrochimique. Enfin, en modifiant légèrement la composition du bain de décapage, nous avons pu minimiser la dégradation du solvant. Un essai sur micropilote nous a permis d'estimer la consommation d'acide thiophosphinique. La faisabilité des opérations en continu a été vérifiée et nous avons pu déterminer des coefficients apparents de transfert qui nous ont permis d'estimer les dimensions d'une unité de taille industrielle.

This project aimed to examine the separation of cobalt and nickel using solvent extraction (SX) with the extractant CYANEX 272 (C272). It was intended to investigate the Co-Ni separation in a sulphate-based leach solution in presence of other contaminants. This is an area of interest because of the difficulty of separating metals of similar properties within the field of hydrometallurgy.  Batch tests, with varying modifiers and diluents, were carried out to examine the effect of organic phase composition on phase separation. The effect of pH on equilibrium was investigated by constructing equilibrium curves. Through various shaking tests, different separation parameters were studied. McCabe-Thiele diagrams were constructed to predict design parameters. In order to simulate a continuous 3-stage countercurrent solvent extraction, batch tests were performed. Scrubbing, as means of impurity removal was also investigated. Finally, the product’s purity was examined by the help of crystallization.  The organic feed mixture that resulted in a sufficient phase separation consisted of C272, tributyl phosphate and naphtha. At pH 4, equilibrium curves showed that equilibrium was either not reached or affected by competing metal ions. A standard equilibrium curve appearance was seen at pH 4.5, resulting in that the theoretical required stages for extraction was calculated to 3 stages (A/O=1). However, a McCabe-Thiele diagram did not give an accurate representation of the more complex case (presence of contaminants). Batch simulation results gave a cobalt recovery of 69% and 100% at pH 4.5 and 4.8, and a nickel recovery of 0% and 3%, respectively. A recommended pH-value for solvent extraction could not be stated, because the choice must be based on operation specifications. Therefore, several different aspects (Co recovery, purity, and economical etc.), must be accounted for. A similar pH-trend was shown in scrubbing, where an increase of pH resulted in an increase of metal ions’ organic concentration. For stripping, acid test results proved 24 g/L sulphuric acid to give the highest cobalt concentration, with a marginal difference in concentration of impurities. An overview of the entire SX process, indicated that extraction, scrubbing, and stripping were all successful operations. The extraction stage showed a Co and Ni recovery of 99% and 0.02%, respectively, and a separation factor of 14250. Distribution results indicated that Al was difficult to remove and was transferred with Co into the product. Therefore, this element must be removed before SX. From noticing an increase of Co:Ni ratio throughout the process, solvent extraction was considered an effective separation method for cobalt and nickel separation. A considerably high purity of cobalt sulphate was produced. However, impurities Al and Ca were also detected in the product. Increasing the acetone volume in crystallization resulted in an increase of Co purity. An increase of the cobalt sulphate crystals formed was observed when increasing the acetone volume, where no impurities were detected.

Two push-pull, linear diphenyl-polyenes, 4-dimethylamino-4† -cyano-1,6-diphenylhexatriene (DCDPH) and 4-dimethylamino-4†-cyano-1,8-diphenyloctatetraene, (DCDPO) compounds with large charge transfer character, have been studied. Up to three time-resolved emission bands of these compounds were seen, depending on temperature, solvant polarity, concentration and intensity excitation, as is shown in figure 1 and 2. These spectra were obtained with apparatus described elsewhere (1).

Breeding bird surveys were initiated on Wilson’s Creek National Monument, Missouri, in 2008 to assess temporal changes in the species composition and abundance of birds on the park and to improve our understanding of relationships between breeding birds and their habitat and the effects of management actions, such as invasive plant species control and tree thinning, on bird populations. Birds were sampled using point counts with 38 variable circular plots located on a systematic grid of 400 x 400-m cells (originating from a random start point). All birds seen or heard on a plot during a 5-min sampling period were recorded. In the 13 years since initiating our breeding bird survey, birds were surveyed on as many of the 38 variable circular plots as possible each year, resulting in 444 cumulative plot visits. Surveys have yielded records for 119 different species of birds. Ninety-eight of the species recorded are classified as permanent or summer residents to the area, 18 are classified as transients in the area, and 3 as winter residents to the area. Eight breeding species recorded are considered species of conservation concern for the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region, the bird conservation region in which Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield is located. Of the 98 breeding species recorded, 12 species in grassland habitat and 15 in woodland habitat occurred in numbers large enough to calculate annual abundances with some degree of confidence. Trends in abundance were classified as uncertain for most species, which means that no significant increases or decreases occurred but it is not certain that trends were <5% per year. The Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) population in grassland habitat was stable. The Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) and Eastern Wood-pewee (Contopus virens) populations in woodland habitat were in moderate decline. Comparing population trends on the park with regional trends for the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region suggests that the bird community at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield is faring similarly to that of the region as a whole. Stable diversity, richness, and evenness values suggest that the park’s habitat has remained consistent in its ability to meet the requirements of many of the park’s breeding bird species. Any decline in species richness could reflect habitat management practices, but it could also reflect the influences of larger-scale factors such as weather or climatic conditions on vegetation. Therefore, continued monitoring of birds and their habitats on Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield as management and weather and climatic conditions change is essential for park management.

Surveys have yielded records for 100 different species of birds. Ninety-seven of the species recorded are classified as permanent or summer residents to the area, two are classified as transients in the area, and one as a winter resident to the area. Six breeding species recorded are considered species of conservation concern for the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region, the bird conservation region in which George Washington Carver National Monument is located. Of the 97 breeding species recorded, ten species in grassland habitat and six in woodland habitat occurred in numbers large enough to calculate annual abundances with some degree of confidence. Trends in abundance were classified as uncertain for most species, which means that there were no significant increases or decreases, but it is not certain that trends were < 5% per year. The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in woodland habitat was stable. The Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna) in grassland habitat was in moderate decline, and the Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) in grassland habitat was in steep decline. Comparing population trends (i.e., changes in population size over time) on the park with regional trends for the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region suggests that the bird community at George Washington Carver National Monument is faring similarly to that of the region as a whole. Trends in the park’s popula-tions of Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) and Indigo Bunting (Passerina cyanea) in grassland habitat and Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) in woodland habitat were uncertain, whereas they declined significantly in the larger region, which could be a result of management on George Washington Carver National Monument. Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) population trends, while uncertain in grassland habitat on the park, increased significantly in the region. The Red-bellied Woodpecker utilizes trees for foraging, which are sparse in the grassland habitat on the park. Declining diversity and richness values suggest that park habitat is declining in its ability to meet the requirements of many of the park’s breeding bird species. This decline in species richness could reflect habitat management practices, but it could also reflect the influences of larger-scale factors such as weather or climatic conditions on vegetation. Therefore, continued monitoring of birds and their habitats on George Washington Carver National Monument as management and weather and climatic conditions change is essential for park management.

Many bacterial pathogens of plants can inject pathogenicity proteins into host cells using a specialized type III secretion system encoded by hrpgenes. This system deliver effector proteins, into plant cells that function in both susceptible and resistant interactions. We have found that the virulence of Erwinia stewartii(Es; syn. Pantoea stewartii) and Erwinia herbicola pv. gypsophilae (Ehg, syn. Pantoea agglomerans), which cause Stewart's wilt of corn and galls on Gypsophila, respectively, depends on hrpgenes. The major objectives of this project were: To increase expression of hrpgenes in order to identify secreted proteins; to identify genes for proteins secreted by the type-III systems and determine if they are required for pathogenicity; and to determine if the secreted proteins can function within eukaryotic cells. We found that transcription of the hrp and effector genes in Es and Ehg is controlled by at least four genes that constitute a regulatory cascade. Environmental and/or physiological signaling appears to be mediated by the HrpX/HrpY two component system, with HrpX functioning as a sensor-kinase and HrpY as a response regulator. HrpYupregulateshrpS, which encodes a transcriptional enhancer. HrpS then activates hrpL, which encodes an alternate sigma factor that recognizes "hrp boxes". All of the regulatory genes are essential for pathogenicity, except HrpX, which appears only to be required for induction of the HR in tobacco by Es. In elucidating this regulatory pathway in both species, we made a number of significant new discoveries. HrpX is unusual for a sensor-kinase because it is cytoplasmic and contains PAS domains, which may sense the redox state of the bacterium. In Es, a novel methyl-accepting protein may function upstream of hrpY and repress hrp gene expression in planta. The esaIR quorum sensing system in Es represses hrp gene expression in Es in response to cell-density. We have discovered six new type III effector proteins in these species, one of which (DspE in Ehg and WtsE in Es) is common to both pathogens. In addition, Es wtsG, which is a homolog of an avrPpiB from P. syringae pv. pisi, and an Ehg ORF, which is a homolog of P. syringae pv. phaseolicola AvrPphD, were both demonstrated to encode virulence proteins. Two plasmidborne, Ehg Hop proteins, HsvG and PthG, are required for infection of gypsophilia, but interestingly, PthG also acts as an Avr elicitor in beets. Using a calmodulin-dependent adenylate cyclase (cyaA) reporter gene, we were successful in demonstrating that an HsvG-CyaA fusion protein can be transferred into human HeLa cells by the type-III system of enteropathogenic E. coli. This is a highly significant accomplishment because it is the first direct demonstration that an effector protein from a plant pathogenic bacterium is capable of being translocated into a eukaryotic cell by a type-III secretion system. Ehg is considered a limiting factor in Gypsophila production in Israel and Stewart’s Wilt is a serious disease in the Eastern and North Central USA, especially on sweet corn in epidemic years. We believe that our basic research on the characterization of type III virulence effectors should enable future identification of their receptors in plant cells. This may lead to novel approaches for genetically engineering resistant plants by modifying their receptors or inactivating effectors and thus blocking the induction of the susceptible response. Alternatively, hrp gene regulation might also provide a target for plant produced compounds that interfere with recognition of the host by the pathogen. Such strategies would be broadly applicable to a wide range of serious bacterial diseases on many crops throughout the USA and Israel.
