Restoration and restoration of shoes – a delicate, complex, often jewelry. It requires professionalism, experience, creative and creative approach and innate artistic taste of the master. In addition, restoration work often requires special equipment and materials for a number of rare and complex operations to completely restore the product and give it its original appearance or, conversely, “aging” of new shoes at the request of the customer. Shoe restoration allows a specialist to create using standard and non-standard materials, classic and advanced methods and techniques for replacing worn parts in the product, and also allows you to experiment with finishing compositions to give the product the appearance of “wear” and “abrasion”, creating a “faded” “Color of the material and its” aged “structure, the effect of attrition or patina, metallic luster or vice versa giving the product a look of” rejuvenation “by updating the color, giving it strength, shine, overall finish and strengthening the structure of the material as a whole. Thanks to such methods of restoration it is possible to achieve not just the desired, but also almost unique result of work. The features of the stages of shoe restoration are investigated in the article. Technological stages of restoration of footwear and step-by-step technology of finishing of finished products have been developed. A full cycle of restoration works was carried out on samples of men’s shoes worn. Tested according to the requirements of the standards and experimentally proven high wear resistance of the surface of the materials of the restored shoes, namely: the ability of the material to repeated bending, stretching, wet and dry friction. Experimental wearing of restored shoe samples was carried out. The high operational characteristics of the studied products have been confirmed. The expediency of these works has been proved experimentally.

The Ministry of Tourism commissioned Edoardo Tresoldi in 2016 to restore the Basilica of Siponto (Puglia, Italy), of which only ruins remain. The project is obtained through metal wefts that intertwine in the air presumably reconstructing the original environments: it is an example of creative restoration. This essay aims to examine the genesis of this artwork that has rekindled the debate on the usefulness of this type of restoration, introduced for the first time by Cesare Brandi (1906-1988) and Renato Bonelli (1911-2004) who gave rise to a critical discussion on the role that restoration must play in reconstructing the original spaces of a lost monument. Creative restoration tends to include in the concept of “restoration” all those actions of reconstruction necessary to restore “truth” to the lost monument in order to guarantee its enjoyment, making the “evocative fantasy” take over. Faced with an architecture that has now lost its face, the added value of Tresoldi’s creative restoration will be highlighted, which is not only the reconstruction of the Basilica but the possibility, through the wire mesh that generates transparency, to understand the monument not only as a historical document but as an artwork that needs to be experienced aesthetically, safeguarding the genius loci, making the site a place to be rediscovered in its link with the territory.

At the dawn of the Third Millennium, philosophy is at an important crossroads in its role as paideia—philosophy educating humanity. A major challenge for philosophy today is to mediate the emergmg science-religion dialogue, and enhance understanding of the relationship between science, ethics, and faith. Curiously, the methodological dilemmas and thorny issues of demarcation between science and religion reflect a new awareness regarding metascientific questions posed by science itself. We are at the threshold of a new Golden Age of scientific discoveries and faith-informed, interdisciplinary, and liberal learning interconnecting once more all areas of knowledge with ethics and faith. The likely key to new discoveries is an interdisciplinary approach seeking interrelatedness between all phenomena. This means also that the restoration of philosqphy in the classic sense as sophia or the love of wisdom can only be achieved within the larger framework of dialogue among all disciplines in the quest for truth.

Conservation science is born of an inherent conflict. On one hand it is based in science, an objective, value-free search for truth that leads to general laws, with no a priori desire for particular outcomes. On the other hand it is clearly driven by value–laden goals related to making the human–nature relationship an enduring one. In contrast to an objective science, particular outcomes – such as preservation of biodiversity and protection or restoration of functioning ecosystems – are clearly pursued in conservation. The result is a sometimes uncomfortable merging of two human endeavours – one objective and one value-laden – that are inherently antagonistic and can result in tension. To make this tension creative, rather than destructive, we need to understand how both components are necessary and synergistic in forming a complete conservation science.

Introduction. The success of the creative development of the tourism industry in a pandemic lockdown and in the post-quarantine period is closely related to the quality of a number of factors that shape the level of creative activity of its subjects and provide competitive advantages. Adequate choice and scientific substantiation of strategic alternatives for the development of the tourism industry highlights the need for a targeted study of the parameters of its creative renewal. Methods. Methods of scientific abstraction, analysis and synthesis are used, technologies of structuring and systematization are applied during construction of logical-structural decomposition of creativity of tourist destinations and structural model of management of tourist cluster. The SWOT analysis was used to evaluate strategic alternatives for the development of tourism entities. Results. The generalization of research on the peculiarities of the functioning of the tourism sector in the context of the socio-economic crisis caused by pandemic constraints, suggests that the restoration of effective business entities should be managed, targeted action of all participants. At the same time, ensuring the efficiency of the tourism industry requires the implementation of creative technologies in management algorithms at all stages of overcoming the crisis. Qualitative goals of post-pandemic recovery of the industry can be generalized in the form of two main directions: 1) creation of creative tourist offer (including tourist experience and offer of original tourist product) on the basis of high-quality entertainment industry, introduction of European market trends, with emphasis on authentic values ; 2) building a clear identity of domestic tourism enterprises, which would synergistically connect micro-destinations, emphasizing the creative benefits in the minds of potential tourists. Discussion. Further research on the possibilities of creative management to overcome the crisis in the tourism industry should cover the problems of creating unique tourism products based on authentic values, reducing the seasonality of domestic resorts, modernization of tourism infrastructure and integration of tourist inactive regions in creative projects. Keywords: tourism entities, Covid-19 pandemic, socio-economic crisis, creative management, destination, tourist offer, tourist cluster.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and determine different energy components existing within historic buildings that will contribute to the development of guidelines for applying modern technology systems within these strucutres and to show the financial, social and physical benefits, which may result without altering the architectural and cultural significance of the building.Union Station, Indianapolis, is an example of historical and architectural ingenuity. If proper and selected energy systems are applied, Union Station will be a strong active force for revitalizing the surrounding area, which has deteriorated and fallen into disuse in recent times. Similar examples of significant historic buildings are scattered all across the country, and with the new development taking place, these historic structures, which are the physical and visual links between us and our past, are being thregtened for the sake of the "glass-box". This study shows the many advantages in preserving these historic links whether economically, architecturally or socially, by bringing the best technology of both worlds and molding them into one system, in which both technologies work together and compliment each other rather than be an isolated system.

Since 1997, Hong Kong as an international financial center has experienced several financial storms. Whenever it was in the storm, the Government found reliance on finance and real estate unreliable and sought the need to diversify its economic mode. However, as soon as the storm was over, the Government forgot the need and continues to focus on financial development. In 2009, in view of the international financial crisis, the Chief Executive (CE) identified 6 priority industries as the new growth drives to propel Hong Kong towards a knowledge-based economy. In parallel, the Policy Address 2009 endorsed the Government would take “appropriate policies to remove obstacles to their development” (para.21) and “examine whether the existing use of resources can support the new economic structure, and to prevent the factors of production from being tied up by outdated policies and economic structure.” (para.22) Subsequently, CE suggested that diversified development should be a strategic move to achieve sustainable economic growth. To utilize the land resources for the 6 industries? development, the Government launches 4 measures to release the potential of 1000 industrial buildings. Its intention is good. Yet, the result will be much better if there are cohesive policy and measures to synchronize the needs and the strengths of the industries. Among the 6 priority industries to utilize the industrial land, this dissertation targets primarily on cultural and creative industries (CCI) which may collaborate with other industries, such as education and tourism to develop cultural tourism and an education center with a view to forming a CCI park in a post-industrial area. This dissertation divides itself into three. The first part evaluates CCI, urban industrial heritage buildings and their combination; the second examines 4 local case studies, Cattle Depot, JCCAC, Fotan and LoftStage as well as 6 Shanghai ones. The third and final part devises a preliminary but innovative model of how to develop a post-industrial area into a sustainable CCI park with various potentials and resources concerted in Hong Kong.

Agricultural land available for habitat creation and restoration is of higher soil nutrient status than semi-natural habitats. This causes problems by favouring the growth of competitive species which thrive at the expense of a more diverse plant community. The depleted seed bank of ex-arable land means that target species are unlikely to be present. Even when the site is adjacent to target habitat, natural colonisation will be slow, meaning target species will need to be introduced artificially. This thesis researches the use of topsoil inversion followed by sowing a simple seed mix, as a means of improving habitat creation in comparison to conventional techniques. This was achieved by establishing a main experimental site, and surveying fifteen existing topsoil inversion sites.

With more people in the world living along coasts than any other environment, planning for the coastal zone requires negotiating the socially constructed human relationships that have traditionally produced severe inequality between coastal residents and users. In Louisiana, this inequality is apparent in the great deal of wealth external users have extracted from the coast at the direct environmental and economic expense of local residents. An examination of the economic history of Louisiana's coast reveals how this disparity between coastal residents and users has produced deleterious environmental consequences, which have grown exponentially precisely because this inequality between human residents and users persists today. The current coastal restoration and management strategy in Louisiana does not focus on the socially constructed origins of this continuing environmental destruction, but it must do so in order to restore any hope of saving, restoring, and improving the coast. This thesis offers a socially reconstructed strategy for coastal restoration and management in Louisiana that narrows the environmental and economic disparity between coastal users and residents to address the environmental harm. This new wealth creation strategy enables local firms and residents to offer their existing knowledge of the coast and participate in the implementation of restoring and improving the natural assets of their coast through a variety of economic incentives.
(cont.) In this way coastal residents are empowered to gain both the economic and environmental benefits of managing their coast, which I define as wealth. A case study of the Pulicat coastal community in Tamil Nadu, India provides valuable insights on how such a strategy can be implemented utilizing the existing civic and institutional infrastructure in Louisiana. The three significant recommendations this thesis offers can be implemented immediately to begin socially reconstructing Louisiana's coastal restoration and management strategy. The urgency and magnitude of environmental destruction to Louisiana's coast mandates such a bold shift.

To minimize coastal land loss and create new land, dredged sediment has been in use in coastal Louisiana during the last several years. Engineering properties and material characteristics of dredged material are input parameters in several mathematical models used to predict the long-term hydrodynamic behavior of the coast. Therefore, proper characterization of the dredged material is of utmost importance in the correct design of coastal restoration and land creation projects. The sedimentation characteristics of the dredged material, among other factors, depends on the (a) grain size distribution of the dredged material, (b) salinity (fresh, brackish, or saltwater environment) of the composite slurry, and (c) concentration of the solid particles in the slurry. In this research, dredged sediments obtained from actual coastal restoration projects were characterized. Furthermore, the effects of grain size distribution, salinity and solid particle concentration on sedimentation characteristics have been evaluated.

This thesis explores the relationship between Creation and the saints Cuthbert and Guthlac in their Anglo-Latin and Old English vitae. It argues that this relationship is best understood through received theological exegesis concerning Creation's present state in the postlapsarian world. The exegesis has its foundation in Augustine's interpretations of the Genesis narrative, though it enters the textual tradition of the vitae via an adapted portion of De Genesi contra Manichaeos in Bede's metrical Vita Sancti Cuthberti (VCM). Both Augustine and Bede argue, with slight differences, that fallen Creation can be restored into prelapsarian harmony with humanity by way of sanctity. Each individual vita engages with this understanding of the Fall in distinct, though ultimately interrelated, ways, and the chapters of this thesis will therefore explore each text individually. Chapter 1 argues that the anonymous Vita Sancti Cuthberti (VCA) unites Cuthbert's ability to restore Creation with the theme of monastic obedience, linking the ordering of a monastery to the restoration of prelapsarian harmony. The VCA also seeks to create sites for potential lay pilgrimage in the landscapes of Farne and Lindisfarne by highlighting the present efficacy of Cuthbert's miracles. Chapter 2 argues that Bede's VCM not only reveals his early attempt to fashion Cuthbert into the primary saint for Britain, via a focus on Cuthbert's obedience to the Divine Office, but also that the restoration of Creation functions as a ruminative tool. Chapter 3 argues that Bede transforms the nature of Cuthbert's sanctity in his prose Vita Sancti Cuthberti (VCP) from static to developmental, influenced by the Evagrian Vita Antonii, and that Creation is adapted to function as the impetus for, and evidence of, Cuthbert's progression. Chapter 4 argues that Felix's Vita Sancti Guthlaci (VSG) unites the development of Guthlac with a physically delineated Creation, and that the restoration of Creation is elevated to an even greater degree here than in Bede's hagiography. Chapter 5 argues that the author of the Old English Prose Guthlac (OEPG) grounds his vita by utilizing a landscape lexis shared with contemporary boundary clauses, so that here the relationship between the saint and Creation has greater force; it further argues that Guthlac A uniquely connects Guthlac with the doctrine of replacement, consolidating links between his arrival to the eremitic space and the restoration of prelapsarian Eden.

Preservation of historical and architectural monuments, their restoration is one of the urgent problems of the modern world. The estates contain a deep potential for the development of new public spaces, the creation of an art cluster in them, that is, a united creative space that could satisfy the needs of a larger number of social groups: youth, families, pensioners. Also, examples are given with the help of which estates can be made modern art spaces.

Quality of life and travel for the restoration of minds and souls are key concerns of the postpandemic era COVID-19. The devastating effect of the COVID-19 pandemic brought tourism at the beginning of 2021 to a 87% decrease in international tourist arrivals in January, as compared to 2020. Given the current trend, the World Tourism Organization estimated a decrease of 85 % in the first quarter of 2021 over the same period of 2019. This represented a loss of 260 million international arrivals, compared to pre-pandemic levels according to International Tourism Highlights, 2020 Edition. This paper aims to analyze and investigate wellness tourism in Romania and the benefits it offers for mental health. It also proposes development solutions for tourism activities using the potential of people employed in this economic sector – their creativity and innovation. We want to offer innovative and creative solutions for the restoration of wellness tourism in Romania.

In-water beneficial use of dredged sediment provides the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) the opportunity to increase beneficial use while controlling costs. Beneficial use projects in riverine environments include bank and near-bank placement, where sediments can protect against bank erosion and support habitat diversity. While bank and near-bank placement of navigation dredged sediment to support river-bank stabilization and habitat is currently practiced, documented examples are sparse. Documenting successful projects can support advancing the practice across USACE. In addition, documentation identifies data gaps required to develop engineering and ecosystem restoration guidance using navigation-dredged sediment. This report documents five USACE and international case studies that successfully applied these practices: Ephemeral Island Creation on the Upper Mississippi River; Gravel Island Creation on the Danube River; Gravel Bar Creation on the Tombigbee River; Wetland Habitat Restoration on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta; and Island and Wetland Creation on the Lower Columbia River Estuary. Increased bank and near-bank placement can have multiple benefits, including reduced dredge volumes that would otherwise increase as banks erode, improved sustainable dredged sediment management strategies, expanded ecosystem restoration opportunities, and improved flood risk management. Data collected from site monitoring can be applied to support development of USACE engineering and ecosystem restoration guidance.

Monitoring the impacts of ecosystem restoration strategies requires both short-term and long-term land surface monitoring. The combined use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and satellite imagery enable effective landscape and natural resource management. However, processing, analyzing, and creating derivative imagery products can be time consuming, manually intensive, and cost prohibitive. In order to provide fast, accurate, and standardized UAS and satellite imagery processing, we have developed a suite of easy-to-use tools integrated into the graphical user interface (GUI) of ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro as well as open-source solutions using NodeOpenDroneMap. We built the Monitoring Ecological Restoration with Imagery Tools (MERIT) using Python and leveraging third-party libraries and open-source software capabilities typically unavailable within ArcGIS. MERIT will save US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) districts significant time in data acquisition, processing, and analysis by allowing a user to move from image acquisition and preprocessing to a final output for decision-making with one application. Although we designed MERIT for use in wetlands research, many tools have regional or global relevancy for a variety of environmental monitoring initiatives.

The Engineering With Nature® (EWN) Program supports nature-based solutions that reduce coastal-storm and flood risks while providing environmental and socioeconomic benefits. Combining the beneficial use of dredged sediments with the restoration or creation of islands increases habitat and recreation, keeps sediment in the system, and reduces coastal-storm and flood impacts. Given the potential advantages of islands, EWN seeks to support science-based investigations of island performance, impacts, and benefits through collaborative multidisciplinary efforts. Using a series of case studies led by US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) districts and others, this technical report highlights the role of islands in providing coastal resilience benefits in terms of reducing waves and erosion as well as other environmental and socioeconomic benefits to the communities and the ecosystems they reside in.

Global oyster abundance has declined ~85 % over the past 200 years, primarily because of overharvesting (Beck, Brumbaugh, and Airoldi 2011; Kirby 2004). Healthy oyster reef systems benefit the environment in many ways, including water-quality improvement, shoreline protection, increased biological and habitat diversity, and carbon sequestration. To maintain these environmental benefits, reef-restoration efforts that produce healthy, sustainable oyster reefs are essential. To this end, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has been involved in reef-restoration projects in many locations, including extensive efforts in the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, Maryland), coastal regions of New York and New Jersey, and the Gulf of Mexico. There are many benefits to creating and maintaining oyster reef systems that are well connected, for both oysters and other organisms within the reef and surrounding habitats. This technical note presents the current knowledge of benefits and costs to restore oyster-reef connectivity along the East and Gulf Coasts of North America. Connectivity of oyster reefs can refer to the physical location of reefs with respect to one another as well as to the dynamics of the genetic links within a metapopulation or to the extent to which larval transport and recruitment unite reef communities. For the purposes of this technical note, connectivity is defined as the spatial aggregation of reefs, though we address impacts of genetic and larval flow as well. Reef connectivity positively affects many ecosystem services and dynamics but can also have unintended consequences (that is, negative externalities). This technical note reviews the benefits and costs of increasing connectivity and presents a brief example of how trade-offs may occur between these potentially opposing ecological objectives. Here, we focus on the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, which inhabits the East and Gulf Coasts of North America, though many of the concepts and principles discussed may apply to other oyster species as well.

This report documents the development of an integrated hydrodynamic and ecological model to test assumptions about island resilience. Swan Island, a 25-acre island in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, was used as a case study. An interagency, interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers came together in a series of workshops to develop a simplified resilience model to examine the ability of islands to reduce waves and erosion and the impacts to nearby habitats and shorelines. This report describes the model development process and the results from this first key step: model conceptualization. The final conceptual model identifies four main components: vegetative biomass, island elevation, waves/currents, and sediment supply. These components interact to form and support specific habitat types occurring on the island: coastal dunes, high marsh, low marsh, and submerged aquatic vegetation. The pre-and post-construction field data, coupled with hydrodynamic ecological models, will provide predictive capabilities of island resilience and evaluations of accrued benefits for future island creation and restoration projects. The process and methods described can be applied to island projects in a variety of regions and geographic scales.

The environmental crisis is increasing risks to security and peace worldwide, notably in countries that are already fragile. Indicators of insecurity such as the number of conflicts, the number of hungry people and military expenditure are rising; so are indicators of environmental decline, in climate change, biodiversity, pollution and other areas. In combination, the security and environmental crises are creating compound, cascading, emergent, systemic and existential risks. Without profound changes of approach by institutions of authority, risks will inevitably proliferate quickly. Environment of Peace surveys the evolving risk landscape and documents a number of developments that indicate a pathway to solutions––in international law and policy, in peacekeeping operations and among non-governmental organizations. It finds that two principal avenues need to be developed: (a) combining peace-building and environmental restoration, and (b) effectively addressing the underlying environmental issues. It also analyses the potential of existing and emerging pro-environment measures for exacerbating risks to peace and security. The findings demonstrate that only just and peaceful transitions to more sustainable practices can be effective––and show that these transitions also need to be rapid.

Dredged materials provide a number of beneficial use opportunities, including beach nourishment, habitat creation and restoration, and other activities. In situ sediment color is important for determining aesthetic and habitat suitability, for beach nourishment, and for other projects. However, dredged materials must meet locally established color compatibility requirements (for example, material cannot be too dark). Often, potential sediment sources are close to meeting specified color thresholds, and previous observations suggest that sediments lighten over time. In response to these observations, this study quantified sediment color change potential in a dredged m aterial management context. Results indicate that dredged material sediment color responded to changes in secondary color components, sediment mixing, and photolytic bleaching improving the sediment color for beneficial use application. Findings allowed for development of a conceptual color change capacity framework and supported development of tools for resource managers to incorporate color change dynamic into planning and operations activities. The following report provides a framework for determining the color change capacity of dredged materials using (1) a comprehensive laboratory approach and (2) a semiquantitative index based on source material and placement location conditions. These tools allow practitioners to incorporate dredged-material color change into resource management decisions, thus increasing beneficial use opportunities.
