CourseDiff is a prototype system that periodically samples course websites and notifies users via email when it identifies changes to those sites. The system was developed after conducting a study of 120 web pages from 50 MIT course websites sampled for two months during the spring semester of 2009. The study found that only 18% of changes to the HTML content of course website data are actually important to the content of the page. A closer examination of the corpus identified two major sources of trivial changes. The first is automatically generated content that changes on every visit to the page. The second is formatting and whitespace changes that do not affect the page's textual content. Together, these two sources produce over 99% of the trivial changes. CourseDiff implements an algorithm to filter out these trivial changes from the webpages it samples and a change reporting format for the changes that are identified as important. A small user test on part of the CourseDiff interface indicated that the system could feasibly be used by students to track changes to course websites.

This dissertation examines the culture and climate of disabled people and the disability community within society and the engineering field and the experience of disabled students in higher education. The research presented is understood by looking at disability as not a detriment to the individual and is imposed by society. Chapter 3 talks about how disabled people are and are not included within the engineering field. It compares a more general engineering academic literature with engineering education academic literature from American Society of Engineering Education national proceedings. The second study researches the accessibility of engineering and engineering related course websites from a higher education institution. This research shows the most common digital accessibility errors that are found along with the types of web pages that have the most accessibility errors. Finally, the third study researches the digital accessibility barriers encountered by disabled and nondisabled engineering students. These results are broken down by the specific disability that was disclosed by the participant. Chapter 6 details tangible digital accessibility recommendations for developers, designers, and instructors/content managers. These recommendations are based on the results within the previous chapters of this dissertation.

With the rapid development of the Internet, most universities gradually adopt network technology to let students select courses online. The introduction of online course selection systems brings much convenience and improves workflow efficiency nowadays. However, when students start course selection, a system lacking proper guidance functions may not cater well for students, because students with little knowledge about their own inclination and background may have difficulty in choosing courses. Accordingly, student learning progress may be impaired considerably. As a remedy, this thesis focuses on designing and implementing an online course selection system with learning orientation. This study uses the XAMPP kit to set up the website of course selection system on the Ubuntu operating system. Additionally, we use Apache to build up the website and MySQL to create the relational database and PHP to implement interactions with the MySQL database and JavaScript to program an interactive website. This study develops subsystems based on respective student backgrounds or profiles that demonstrate learning statuses, curriculums of preplanned fields, recommended majors and subjects, and simulative course selections. Concerning learning statuses, a measure of illustrating such statuses is to quantify core competencies or visualize outcomes in different dimensions with radar charts. Core competencies show the learning situation of students according to course grades, course credits, and associated weights of core competencies. The course grade is adjusted with reference to the highest score as a norm in that class and shows the average core competencies of the whole class, in order to benefit students to better understand their relative performance at class. Curriculums of preplanned fields list series of courses to take systematically (those taken are highlighted in different colors) whereby students can receive a well-rounded training in a specialized professional field. As for recommended majors and subjects, our system will suggest each student take an individualized number of suitable courses in the next semester to strengthen his/her professionalism, in light of what fields of classes the student has passed in the past years. Finally, the simulative course selection subsystem facilitates students to foresee the learning outcomes by selecting certain courses, which is of value to help students understand the benefits resulting from such courses. So the subsystem is informative for students to ease their diffidence or hesitation when making decisions on selecting courses. Overall, our development provides personalized orientation that improves student learning outcomes to an appreciable extent. Keywords: Core competencies, Databases, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript

This paper describes the preparation, framework, construction and management of a course website; this website could increase the interaction and exchange of information between teacher and students, and help the course to be filled with life, energy and innovation as well. There are three main purposes for this research: (1) Constructing a course website which supports the teaching of art design. (2) Discussing the use of website in the teaching of art design, the problems might be encountered, and possible solutions might be available. (3) Evaluating the website and coming up with the some effective ways. The suitable configuration of website was developed through the literatures review, and evolved from systematic information analysis, which was evaluated by group brainstorming activities. All students who attended the course, the Design of Art Teaching, for the school year 2007 in NHLUE, were involved in this research, the data regarding their actual usage of the website were collected, and whether the website met the needs of teaching was also evaluated. The conclusions of this study were included: (1) The art teaching website is composed of six parts which are learning, using, modification to the system, system management, data management and data backup. (2) All the participants were observed when the class was undergoing with the focus of how they utilize the website, and the possible improvements for the website were come up which were the layout, system platform as well as the site feature. (3) The survey shows that the structure and function of the website were acceptable or satisfactory to the participants. (4)From the analysis of announcements and file patterns, the website provides rich teaching resources, shares a wide range of teaching experiences, provides a vast variety of arts materials that could help students learning more in course activities.

In college, the course selection plays an important part. Whether students select appro-priate courses to satisfy their learning objectives not only affects their scores of single subject directly but also have to do with their academic performances in college, and even career life. Therefore, making students get necessary information to select courses that interest them and meet their expectation of quality for teaching is an important task, which keeps students' pas-sion for learning. However, with the asymmetric information between professors and stu-dents, the students are hard to acquire the completed student learning and professor teaching data and comments for courses selection. This makes students wonder if they have selected appropriate courses they want. Recently, with the advance of Internet technology, crowdsourcing has prevailed in our daily life. Quasi-crowdsourcing originated from it outsources works to unspecific people. This study creates the teaching evaluation website and, further, collects students’ comments on professors’ teaching depending on their study experiences through the teaching evaluation website. The website keeps study experiences of students who have taken the same class, which can be passed on others interested in the course. This study hopes it is a right way to reveal the course information and that the students finally complete the course selection they want.

E-learning, with government’s highly promotion, has been gradually accepted by our tertiary education system. Internet teaching has become an essential assisted method on our tertiary education programs. This study based on technology acceptance model(TAM), which coordinates the Computer Self-efficacy, DeLone & McLean IS Success model to investigate the related factors that influence the correlation of the learning net benefits, satisfaction and continuance intention of using Web-based Instruction(WBI). The author conducts a survey to students in National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology through questionnaires at two different stages in the study. Students use the previous version of Teaching Course Website at the first stage but the new version at the second stage. The result of the first stage shows that user’s satisfaction is significantly determined by perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, service quality and student’s learning net benefits while the user’s continuance intention is significantly determined by student’s learning net benefit and user’s satisfaction. On the other hand, the result of the second stage shows that that user’s satisfaction is significantly determined by perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived playfulness, information quality, service quality and student’s learning net benefits while the user’s continuance intention is significantly determined by student’s learning net benefit and user’s satisfaction.
