Abstract Most popular films and television programs reflect, and thereby reinforce, the common and entrenched cultural perception of aging as the “enemy” of vital living. Aging used to be kept at bay in popular films and TV programs through a stereotyping that allowed ridicule and avoidance. Today, such overt negative portrayals have begun to fall out of favor but are being replaced by a subtler form of ageism—that of “super-aging” where older adults who are seen as successfully holding onto their youthful ways are celebrated and held up as models of “successful” aging. This presentation will give an overview of how most popular films and television programs frame the experience of older adulthood, and will illustrate this with clips from such films. Then, in contrast, clips will be presented from films that present a more holistic and balanced view of elderhood.

Before WWII, Jadwiga Andrzejewska 1915–1977) was among the most popular actresses in Polish cinema. During WWII she acted in the Dramatic Theatre of the Polish Second Corps. Returning to her hometown Łódź in 1947 Andrzejewska was initially perceived by the Polish authorities as politically uncertain. Her notable theatrical roles included the heroine in A Woman of Wonder and the heroine in Mother Courage and Her Children. Although she lived in Łódź – a capital of Polish cinema – her film career languished after the war. She had bit parts in about thirty feature films (among them television films). A 1964 television series, “Profiles in Courage,” based on the late President John F. Kennedy's Pulitzer prize-winning book, featured the life of Mary Stone McDowell, a quiet, yet strong, teacher. Within peace circles, McDowell was a well-known figure. It was not unusual to see her marching in peace demonstrations or handing out antiwar literature at street meetings in the rain, snow, sleet and hot days in the summer. It was not out of the ordinary to read her editorials urging war tax resistance and certainly not surprising to those who knew her to draw strength from her courage and convictions. Yet what captured the interest of the show's producers was the stand she took during World War I. This quiet, unassuming Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Swarthmore College, and Quaker public school teacher in New York City, became the first educator in American history to test the constitutionality of the newly enacted loyalty oaths on religious, rather than political, grounds.

In 1876, an American newspaperman with the US 7th Cavalry, Mark Kellogg, declared: ‘I go with Custer, and will be at the death.’ This overtly heroic pronouncement embodies what many still want to believe is the greatest role in journalism: to go up to the fight, to be with ‘the boys’, to expose yourself to risk, to get the story and the blood-soaked images, to vividly describe a world of strength and weakness, of courage under fire, of victory and defeat—and, quite possibly, to die. So culturally embedded has this idea become that it raises hopes among thousands of journalism students worldwide that they too might become that holiest of entities in the media pantheon, the television war correspondent. They may find they have left it too late. Accompanied by evolutionary technologies and breathtaking media change, TV war reporting has shifted from an independent style of filmed reportage to live pieces-to-camera from reporters who have little or nothing to say. In this article, I explore how this has come about; offer some views about the resulting negative impact on practitioners and the public; and explain why, in my opinion, our ‘right to know’ about warfare has been seriously eroded as a result. Television “The Little Nyonya” from the feminist perspective, with hybrid living space in the form of Baba culture as the background, shaped the survival during the Anti-Japanese War in under cover of male supremacy, especially in the feudal etiquette, social circles to days of Tianlan, Juxiang, and Yueniang has represented the typical female characters, depicting the intelligence and qualities of Nyonya, shows them from swallowing the defense, active resistance to victory break free of this growth process into confusion, explore, growth, struggle and sacrifice. As a hymn reflecting women’s strength, courage, independence and confidence, “The Little Nyonya” has certain enlightening significance for the audience, especially the female audience, to think about their own life choices and pursuits.

The Church must tirelessly seek appropriate means and language to effectively proclaim every person’s universal vocation to salvation. Today’s witnesses to the Gospel should use the potential of old and new means of communication in preaching and ministry. Above all, they should revive in themselves the courage to settle on ‘new areopaguses’. The most important goal of evangelization is to bring every person to an encounter with Christ, who is the main content of the proclaimed Good News. The authors of this monograph did not forget about it. By showing both the enormous possibilities and certain limitations of the new media in proclaiming the Gospel to the world, they first asked themselves whether those countless texts, images and sounds that fill today’s periodicals, radio, television, film truly reflect the face of Christ and let His voice be heard.

The origins and use of national space rhetoric used by NASA, the US government, and the media in America began during the Cold War era and relied, in part, on religious imagery to convey a message of exploration and conquest. The concept of space as a “New Frontier” was used in political speech, television, and advertising to reawaken a sense of manifest destiny in postwar America by reviving notions of religious freedom, courage, and exceptionalism—the same ideals that originally drove expansionist boosters first to the New World and then to the West. Using advertisements, political speeches, NASA documents, and other media, this paper will demonstrate how this rhetoric served to reinforce a culture held by many Americans who maintained a long tradition of believing that they were called on by God to settle New Frontiers and how this culture continues to influence how human spaceflight is portrayed today.

Several of the novels of the Spanish writer Vicente Blasco Ibanez (1867–1928) have provided the basis for theatrical adaptations: but the version of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1916) by Peter Granger-Taylor, staged in March 1990 at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, was the first for sixty years. In the following feature, Ian Craven, who teaches in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow, provides a full account of Jon Pope's production, considering questions of adaptation, performance, and response, and also paying special attention to the influence of the screen versions of 1921 and 1962. His analysis is complemented by extracts from an interview with the adapter and director. A study by Margaret Eddershaw of Philip Prowse's production of Brecht's Mother Courage, in which Glenda Jackson took the title role during the same season at the Citizens, appeared in NTQ28 (November 1991).

The purpose of this article is to study the informational impact of television content on the psyche of the viewer in the coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian war (on the example of all-Ukrainian channels). Research methodology. Intelligence is based on the following methods: analytical-synthetic, generalization, modeling, forecasting, evaluation of the artistic and informational value of the material, etc. The novelty of the study. The article proves that TV channels, forcing viewers to become virtual witnesses of war events, broadcast stress on them, which can often cause mental trauma or posttraumatic stress disorder. Conclusions. During hostilities, information security becomes especially important, as incorrect or erroneous information can lead to panic, influence the course of events, accelerate internal migration of the population, and negatively affect the image of the state’s top military-political leadership. It can also undermine trust in politicians, their statements and messages, which in turn can affect the conduct of hostilities and harm the expected results of a military conflict. The above fully applies to the audience’s reaction to the coverage of war events by domestic TV channels. Since February 24, 2022, Ukrainian television has been constantly covering events at the front and in the occupied territories, reporting on the enemy’s losses and the successes of the Ukrainian military, recording the crimes of the Russian army, and also telling the stories of war witnesses. In the first weeks of the aggression, Ukrainian television quickly changed its thematic priorities, preferring materials about military events to news about politics, community life, culture, and ecology. This was caused by the fight against Russian propaganda and caused an increase in the quality of Ukrainian television products. In a situation of uncertainty and anxiety, when the picture of the day changes rapidly, the demand for a high-quality analytical product is increasing. Thus, from February 25, 2022, all channels joined the joint project called «Single Marathon», which is coordinated on the basis of the parliamentary TV channel «Rada». Among the factors that increase the traumatic nature of the materials of domestic television channels about the war with Russia: showing a person «by surprise» in a moment of acute grief or despair; demonstration of torture, moral and physical abuse; direct or indirect justification of the aggressor’s actions, showing his triumph and impunity; emphasis on the uncertainty, absurdity of the situation taking place, on the disorganization, chaotic nature of the applied measures; relishing cruelty, giving «bloody» details; disbelief in the future, the image of the situation as hopeless (any possible solution is a tragedy). Among the factors that weaken trauma: faith in the future (orientation on overcoming the tragedy, affirming the possibilities of a better future); clear moral orientation of the audience, emphasis on the basic values of life; examples of resilience and courage of people who got into the war, a description of cases of active resistance; expressing support for the Armed Forces; a call for the unification of all the forces of society, a demonstration of the solidarity of people within the country, a demonstration of the support of the world community

This exploratory study examines what Latter-day Saint young single adults remember about their parents mediating the television and its use, and how those recollections contribute to their current attitudes and values toward the media, as well as their media choices. A stratified random sample of 267 LDS young single adults across the United States and outside the state of Utah responded to a cross sectional mail or online survey. The three mediation styles established by Valkenburg, Krcmar, Peeters, and Marseille (1999)—Restrictive, Instructive, and Coviewing—were used as the independent variables while scales assessing television offensiveness levels, attitudes, orientation, and usage were used as dependent variables. According to this study, individuals who recall high levels of Restrictive mediation tend to restrict their personal media choices when exposed to personally offensive material more than those that recall low Restrictive mediation (p < .01). High levels of Restrictive mediation also indicate (a) negative attitudes towards television (p < .001), (b) more media sensitivity (p < .05), and (c) a Traditionals approach to media choices (p < .001). Individuals who come from highly Instructive based homes watch more informational/educational programs and more situational comedies than individuals from low Instructive homes (p < .05). Individuals who recall high levels of Coviewing have a neutral orientation towards the media, finding it neither positive nor negative (p > .05) and tend to watch more informational/educational programming (p < .05). This study, while exploratory adds to the research on parental mediation and mediation theory, and offers support to the effectiveness of mediation. It suggests a possible benefit from teaching parents how to mediate the television and encourages religious groups to educate church members on using methods of television mediation.

This research examines the production of meanings of the broadcasted transmissions in open TV news programs on the 15th of may, 2005, when the Primeiro Comando da Capital attacks occurred in São Paulo. In the present days television, especially on news programs, applies the broadcast, particularly the live transmition. There s relevancy in investigating how the broadcast is fundamental on establishing a strong communicational contract between enunciator and enunciatee. For the corpus we selected from TV Globo the news extra bulletings SPTV and Globo Notícias, the news programs Jornal Nacional and SPTV 1ª Edição, and SBT`s São Paulo Contra o Crime special edition program as well as their news extra bulletins. From the speech theories and the audiovisual analysys methodology (Arlindo Machado, Beatriz Becker, Yvana Fechine de Brito, Nilton Hernandes e Valdério de Almeida), we performed a detailed examination of the programs in the corpus, studying the effects of meaning produced in the real time informative audiovisual texts. In the examined corpus, the effort to the passionalization of fear seemed to become, as the work s hypothesis, one essential resource used in the constitution of the communicational contract between enunciator and enunciatee, intimately connecting itself to the broadcast resource. There were highlighted effects of meaning of fear, insecurity, simultaneousness and ubiquity, we identified as well the course of passionlalization of fear. We emphasize the parcial approach of television companies on the news coverage about the consequences of the PCC attacks; their goal was to use live broadcast transmissions to enrapture the viewers attention, disregarding the television`s importance as Brazil s most efficient information broadcaster. Still we identified the TV`s attempt to transform the violent broadcasted events in a great media event, which would involve the whole society, initiated by criminals, but then turned into a nation integrator thanks to the TV channels efforts
Esta pesquisa examina a produção de sentidos da transmissão direta nos telejornais da TV aberta em 15 de maio de 2005, por ocasião dos ataques do Primeiro Comando da Capital em São Paulo. Atualmente a televisão, principalmente nos telejornais, emprega o recurso da transmissão direta, em particular o "ao vivo". É relevante investigar como a transmissão direta é fundamental na constituição de um contrato comunicacional forte entre enunciador e enunciatário. Foram selecionados para o corpus os boletins extraordinários SPTV e Globo Notícias, o Jornal Nacional e o SPTV 1ª Edição da TV Globo, além das transmissões diretas do São Paulo Contra o Crime e os plantões do SBT. A partir de teorias do discurso e da metodologia de análise audiovisual (Arlindo Machado, Beatriz Becker, Yvana Fechine de Brito, Nilton Hernandes e Valdério de Almeida), realizamos um estudo dos programas do corpus, examinando os efeitos de sentido produzidos nos textos audiovisuais informativos em tempo real. No corpus examinado, o esforço à passionalização pelo medo pareceu-nos constituir, como hipótese de trabalho, um recurso essencial empregado na constituição do contrato comunicacional entre enunciador e enunciatário, ligando-se intimamente ao recurso da transmissão direta. Destacamos os efeitos de sentido de medo, insegurança, simultaneidade e ubiqüidade, e identificamos também o percurso da passionalização do medo. Ressaltamos o enfoque parcial das emissoras na cobertura informativa sobre os eventos conseqüentes aos ataques do PCC; seu objetivo com o uso das transmissões ao vivo foi o arrebatamento da atenção do telespectador, desconsiderando-se dessa maneira a importância do veículo televisual como difusor de informações em nossa sociedade. The purpose of this study was to build theory about parasocial relationships and to examine what affect, if any, religion had on parasocial relationships. Using qualitative methods, the researcher watched the show three times with five women followed by an in-depth interview. The women chosen were LDS stay-at-home moms who had watched a soap opera for at least a year. From this data came several surprising findings about religion and soap opera viewing. The women said they did not feel guilty about the content of the shows, rather the time required to watch. This guilt was alleviated by structuring their daily tasks around watching the shows. Also, since the women viewed the show as entertainment, they were less likely to judge the actions of the characters as harshly as if it were real-life. Current life situation was also the biggest factor in whether or not a parasocial relationship existed and how strong that relationship is. This thesis illustrates the need for a comprehensive theory about parasocial relationships. As the media becomes more prominent in our lives, parasocial relationships will need to become understood in greater detail in order to understand what possible effect, if any, they could have.

This study investigated the effectiveness of televised lectures in teaching an introductory statistics course to first year commerce undergraduates, Certain constraints imposed themselves on this introductory course which dictated many of the teaching conditions. Some of these conditions were that the lecture situation formed the major teaching component in the course and that these lectures were administered to large numbers of students (groups of between 70 and 120). The primary aim of the investigation was to determine whether or not the effectiveness of these lectures (when televised) could be assessed. A secondary aim was to determine whether or not (once the effectiveness of the lectures had been assessed) the areas in the lectures which had been identified as ineffective, could be analysed and changed, so as to become effective. In order to conduct this investigation the method employed demanded that three preliminary areas be fully expounded. The first was that the meaning of 'instructional effectiveness' be fully defined in terms of the previling conditions. In order to achieve this a criterion referenced approach to instruction was adapted to the television lectures. Secondly, the 'type' of television lecture had to be disclosed. The televised lectures were traditional in that they were similar to die 'live' lectures except for a few novel innovations. The study did not however set out to compare the effectiveness of the 'live and 'T.V,1 instruction - a point which is fully discussed in the second and sixth chapters, The third preliminary area was the means employed to collect the data which was needed for the evaluation of the lectures. A recently devoWpcd educational computer system was used for this purpose and a full description of this novel system is given in this study. The experimentation was based on two important premises. First, the evaluative means which were used to assess the lectures had to be valid. In other words they had to measure what they were supposed to measure. The validation procedure, adopted is therefore fully discussed. Secondly the variables had to be Identified and controlled when improvements were attempted so as to ensure that the only variable which was allowed to change was the instruction. This procedure is always a difficult one and is fully discussed in chapter six and chapter eight. The results of this investigation indicated that it was both possible to assess and improve the effectiveness of a televised lecture within the prevailing conditions. However this investigation is seen only as a preliminary study into an area which requires scientifically based analyses and conclusions in order to achieve both effective and efficient instruction in this teaching area. The results of this investigation indicated that it was both possible to assess and improve the effectiveness of a televised lecture within the prevailing conditions. However this investigation is seen only as a preliminary study into an area which requires scientifically based analyses and conclusions in order to achieve both effective and efficient instruction in this teaching area. Therefore there is much which this study did not do and several criticisms are made in the final chapter.

Abstract From the teaching experience in an elementary school, the researcher found that students’ behavior is usually tied with TV programs and/or advertisements. Teachers and parents usually care the most about how much time children spend in watching TV, and whether or not the content of the program is appropriate. However, they often neglect how children react to commercials. To cultivate and assess students’ media literacy, the researcher designed a course called “Enter the Commercial” for the forth-grade students. By utilizing the public TV series “Mighty Media – Insight of advertisement” and teaching strategies such as group discussions and role playing, this course helped students to understand the potential approaches of advertising and further made them capable of processing the messages they received from the advertisements. Through observation, survey, interview and self-reflection of thinking, the researcher collected and analyzed data from the experiment in a forth-grade class. Evaluation tests, which include the purpose of advertisement, the origination (i.e. the relationship between the host, agent and consumers), the producing of advertisement, and the advertising approach, were applied to the students before and after the course. Comparisons of the test results showed that the students’ awareness of advertisement was indeed improved after teaching them about media literacy. This course also helped students to further analyze which type of advertisements can draw their attentions easily. In regard to the future research, the researcher suggests: 1. In order to collect more reference data, the sample size of the research may be increased. 2. Media literacy is a lifetime subject; the methodology based on the present conditions may be adjusted and applied to the teaching.

Proliferating for the last twenty-five years, outbreak narratives have now reached epidemic proportions. From 28 Days Later to The Walking Dead, Outbreak to Contagion, films and television shows are filled with zombie viruses, bioengineered plagues, and disease-ravaged survivors. Not only have outbreak narratives infected public discourse and affected the way we view the world, but they have, especially right now, impacted global responses to COVID-19. The way infectious viruses are appropriated by Hollywood provides insight into the viruses themselves and the world we live in. After all, few things reflect social trends and anxieties like film and television. Alarmingly, outbreak narratives are even used as “how-to manuals” of sorts. For instance, as COVID-19 took hold, journalist Mike Stuchbery tweeted that crisis response teams were reading World War Z by Max Brooks (a fictional account of a zombie plague) as a study in the effects of epidemics. My chapter examines film and television outbreak narratives, studying how the repetition of characters, images, and story lines has produced a formulaic narrative that reflects and shapes new paradigms of disease and fear, connecting those to real-life events that have unfolded worldwide over the course of 2020.

AbstractThis third chapter sheds light on how the State’s discourse on population “quality” (suzhi) represents a sophisticated means of governance from afar.Initially emerging in the 1980s, the concept focused on population control. Eugenic slogans promoting “fewer births, better births” reflected a belief that both genetic and environmental factors shape quality. This approach aimed to cultivate a vibrant, competitive youth capable of propelling China onto the global stage.In the 1990s and 2000s, the discourse gained prominence and underwent a shift. It ultimately encompasses moral, intellectual, psychological, ideological and physical characteristics. Zhang Weiqing’s 2007 speech highlights the Party-State’s push for an ideal of quality that would produce competent workers and citizens.The concept is infused through various organizations, including TV dramas. The chapter argues that the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television controlling their content shown in, TV series act as powerful vehicles for norm dissemination. They actively participate in the socialization of the population. The chapter examine five TV dramas and how they depict the transition to adulthood through the prism of this discourse.

With the development of the computer and internet, the depth and scope of the ODDE market in the twenty-first century is changing every day. As venture capitalists seek new financially lucrative opportunities and alternative learning formats open doors for those who otherwise may not have had access to learning opportunities, questions and concerns remain. The digital divide (access and inequality), quality assurance, regulation, privacy, and security remain central to areas of concern in the ODDE marketplace. Despite these concerns, across all educational sectors, the forging of partnerships within and across borders is enabling reskilling and upskilling of the labor force and advancing the conservation on how to improve transparency and protect vulnerable populations of current and future learners.

AbstractThis article gives a comprehensive theoretical account of deception in multimodal film narrative in the light of the pragmatics of film discourse, the cognitive philosophy of film, multimodal analysis, studies of fictional narrative and – last but not least – the philosophy of lying and deception. Critically addressing the extant literature, a range or pertinent notions and issues are examined: multimodality, film narration and the status of the cinematic narrator, the pragmatics of film construction (notably, the characters’ communicative level and the one of the collective sender and the recipient), the fictional world and its truth, the recipient’s film engagement and make believing, as well as narrative unreliability. Previous accounts of deceptive films are revisited and three main types of film deception are proposed with regard to the two levels of communication on which it materialises, the characters’ level and the recipient’s level, as well as the intradiegetic and/or the extradiegetic narrator involved. This discussion is illustrated with multimodally transcribed examples of deception extracted from the American television seriesHouse.In the course of the analysis, attention is paid to how specific types of deception detailed in the philosophy of language (notably, lies, deceptive implicature, withholding information, covert ambiguity, and covert irrelevance) are deployed through multimodal means in the three types of film deception (extradiegetic deception, intradiegetic deception, and a combination of both when performed by both cinematic and intradiegetic narrators). Finally, inspired by the discussion of Hitchcock’s controversial lying flashback scene inStage Fright, as well as films relying on tacit intradiegetic, unreliable narrators (focalising characters) an attempt is made to answer the thorny question of when the extradiegetic (cinematic) narrator can perform lies (through mendacious multimodal assertions) addressed by the collective sender to the recipient, and not just only other forms of deception, as is commonly maintained.

In this piece the concept of implementation of informal learning methods and principles of teaching is presented, which can be implemented within e-learning teaching materials. The area which is covered in this piece is in its beginning phase and data given here are presenting a good base for further theoretical researches and practical projects. There has been given an overview of main characteristics of formal, non-formal and informal teaching methodes. The expected results of the implementation of informal methods, as well as possible ways of realization of certain methods, have been described. Vill@ge project, T-learning (learning via digital television), M-learning (learning using mobile phones) are some realisation methodes of informal learning methodes described in this paper. An overview of formal methods and principles is given which are currently used in the e-learning process. Advantages of using those informal methods have been described together with the potential drawbacks which may occur in the process of their implementation. A stress has been set on the use of literary methods and on their possible implementation in e-learning teaching materials. An example is given on how to use this literary method which is a type of informal method of learning. A chapter of a lesson used in a course named multimedia graphics is presented in the paper. The chapter is presented in a informal literary maner. At the end of the paper there are given some conclusions and potentional ways of using literaly method as a way of informal method of learning in e-learning process and enviroment.

The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the education sector in unprecedented ways. As with many other countries around the world, the Ethiopian government closed schools following the first identified case in the capital city, Addis Ababa, on the 16th of March 2020. Across the country, these closures resulted in more than 26 million learners staying at home for almost eight months (UNESCO, 2021). In addition to this hiatus in their education, pupils were promoted automatically to the next grade with only 45 days of catch-up classes (Ministry of Education, 2020). In other words, those attending a specific school grade in March 2020 were then promoted to the next grade when school resumed in October 2020. For a significant proportion of Ethiopian pupils, learning during school closures was extremely limited despite the government’s efforts to create educational programmes via national television and radio stations (Kim et al., 2021a; Yorke et al., 2020). School closures, combined with barriers to accessing remote educational resources, meant potential learning losses for a significant number of pupils. Several studies have already indicated that COVID-19 resulted in learning losses, especially among the poorest and most disadvantaged groups. A study in Indonesia found that pupils lost 11 points on the PISA3 reading scale due to the four-month school closure from March to July 2020 (Yarrow, Masood & Afkar, 2020). It was also estimated that Grade 4 pupils in South Africa experienced losses equivalent to more than 60 percent of an academic year (Ardington, Wills & Kotze, 2021), while pupils in the UK lost a third of their expected learning during pandemic-related school closures (Major, Eyles & Machin, 2021). It is anticipated that school closures in Ethiopia could similarly result in learning losses and challenges for pupils to catch up with their learning, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our related emerging findings in Ethiopia have indicated that school closures exacerbated pre-existing inequalities in education, where progress was much lower for rural students compared to those in urban areas who were tracked from Grade 4 to Grade 6 (Kim et al., 2021b; Bayley et al., 2021). Building on this work in Ethiopia, this Insight Note provides a new perspective on numeracy achievements of Grade 1 and Grade 4 pupils by comparing learning at the start of each academic year and the gains over the course of the year across two academic years: 2018-19 and 2020-21. During the 2018-19 academic year, the Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) Ethiopia programme collected data on students’ numeracy achievement from 168 schools. After schools reopened in October 2020, and with additional support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, data on students’ numeracy achievements were collected for two new cohorts of pupils in Grades 1 and 4 in the same schools using the same instruments. This has enabled us to compare learning patterns between two cohorts in the same grades and schools before and during the pandemic. More specifically, in this Insight Note, we aim to: -Compare foundational numeracy levels of pupils entering Grade 1 in the 2020-21 academic year relative to those in 2018-19. -Compare progress in foundational numeracy for Grade 1 pupils over the course of the 2020-21 academic year relative to that seen during the 2018-19 academic year. -Compare numeracy levels of pupils entering Grade 4 in the 2020-21 academic year relative to those entering the same grade in 2018-19. -Compare progress in numeracy for Grade 4 pupils over the course of the 2020-21 academic year relative to the progress seen during the 2018-19 academic year. -Estimate the magnitude of learning loss attributable to the pandemic by calculating the difference in numeracy levels and progress between the two cohorts.
