For a non-empty class of groups L, a finite group G=AB is said to be an L-connected product of the subgroups A and B if ⟨a,b⟩∈L for all a∈A and b∈B. In a previous paper, we prove that, for such a product, when L=S is the class of finite soluble groups, then [A,B] is soluble. This generalizes the theorem of Thompson that states the solubility of finite groups whose two-generated subgroups are soluble. In the present paper, our result is applied to extend to finite groups previous research about finite groups in the soluble universe. In particular, we characterize connected products for relevant classes of groups, among others, the class of metanilpotent groups and the class of groups with nilpotent derived subgroup. Additionally, we give local descriptions of relevant subgroups of finite groups.

Анотація:
Purpose - The purpose of this master thesis is to enhance knowledge about how revenue models for smart, connected and integrated product-services come about. Thus, the author aim to primarily contribute to the revenue model literature with insights on processual characteristics and activities. Method – The thesis uses an exploratory single case-study approach, based on qualitative data gathered mainly from semi-structured interviews. In total six manufacturing companies and five experts within relevant areas were included in the study. Data were analyzed through an abductive analysis approach, and a combination of the Gioia Methodology and Thematic coding. Findings – The study’s main findings show that the process when designing revenue models for smart, connected and integrated product-services, is characterized by an iterative phase layout and a strong customer focus. Key activities include pilot project testing, continuous evaluations and an organizational transformation, beginning with some initial analyzes to continue with a stepwise implementation and rollout of a new integrated product-service offer. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited by the single case study approach, and the aim to merely develop theory, not practically test it. The study contributes to the revenue model literature by enhancing knowledge about the processual characteristics when developing revenue models. Also, the processual framework provides structure and guidance for management at mature manufacturing companies. Originality/value – The novel contribution of this study is a processual framework and enhanced knowledge about the design process in the so far scarcely explored area of revenue models for smart, connected and integrated product-services. Анотація:
Many types of product meanings have been investigated in the consumer behavior literature, and these layers of meaning have been shown to influence consumer behavior. However, very little research has attempted to investigate product meanings having to do with provision networks, that is, the people, places, resources and processes involved in creating products and delivering them to the consumer. In addition, researchers in several fields have argued that consumers have lost an awareness of provision networks due to their increasing size and complexity in the modern economy. This research indicates that some consumers are indeed cognizant of the systems of provision for the products they consume. The results of this study indicate that some consumers expend effort to create and ascribe provision meanings for some products, and that these meanings in turn affect the consumer’s consumption decisions and experiences. In spite of the commodifying effects of modern market systems, these consumers exhibit an appreciation for products as the outcome of a complex system of relationships among people, places, resources and processes and have thus become reconnected to the provision of what they consume.

There are four prominent product graphs in graph theory: Cartesian, strong, direct, and lexicographic. Of these four product graphs, the lexicographic product graph is the least studied. Lexicographic products are not commutative but still have some interesting properties. This paper begins with basic definitions of graph theory, including the definition of a graph, that are needed to understand theorems and proofs that come later. The paper then discusses the lexicographic product of digraphs, denoted $G \circ H$, for some digraphs $G$ and $H$. The paper concludes by proving a cancellation property for the lexicographic product of digraphs $G$, $H$, $A$, and $B$: if $G \circ H \cong A \circ B$ and $|V(G)| = |V(A)|$, then $G \cong A$. It also proves additional cancellation properties for lexicographic product digraphs and the author hopes the final result will provide further insight into tournaments.

Анотація:
The process of innovation remains challenging for companies in general and for small firms in particular. Limited resources constitute an obstacle on the small firm’s path towards market launch and the need for supportive measures is evident. Today, as the technology is developing at an exponential speed, the time-to-market shortens, underlining that the innovation challenge of small firms is an urgent matter. Given the limited resources of the small firms, this thesis defines the access to external competence as well as an established new product development process as crucial factors for successful innovation. Providing these necessary functions, a public intermediary, originating from policies, is considered a viable solution. The contribution of this thesis lies in investigating whether or not a private intermediary, not supported by policies, can provide the same functions as a public intermediary. In addition, the thesis expands the knowledge about the intermediary functions present in the innovation process by relating them to specific phases in a generalized new product development process. The results in this thesis are qualitative, based on a profound literary study as well as a comparative case study, examining two diverse kinds of intermediaries in a micro perspective. The first case is a public intermediary, operating with a strong business focus, as its mission is to economically strengthen the Swedish industry. The second case presents a technology based consultancy firm, acting as a private intermediary and centered on questions related to R&D. Applying Howells’ (2006) intermediation functions to the two diverse cases, a comparative study of their offered functions has been performed. The micro perspective study has proved the acknowledged intermediation functions to be applicable to specific phases in a generalized new product development process. As several functions appear in multiple phases of the new product development process, the generalized process is observed to be iterative. This notion questions previous definitions of the intermediation functions during an innovation process, as the processes have been simplified as linear in prior research. Using the generalized new product development process as framework for a comparative analysis, it has been concluded that the private intermediary can provide the same functions as the public intermediary. In extension, the private intermediary is able to offer additional services, not legally permitted for the public intermediary, such as selecting external actors and negotiating agreements. As the private intermediary can provide an extended assortment of functions, while not being dependent on government funding, the question of whether or not the public intermediary still fills a necessary function has been raised. However, additional values, such as objectivity and a non-profit-interest have been linked to the public intermediary. As these attributes are valuable to the small firm, further studies on the support not incorporated in the investigated functions are needed.

This thesis set out to investigate what motivates an established manufacturing firm to add smart and connectivity features into its products and what considerations are made when doing so. Such a firm was used as a case study object, a firm that is considering digitalization in one of its product areas but has not yet finalized the strategy on how to move forward. The qualitative study was made using semi-structured interviews which included mostly respondents from this organization, but also respondents representing the customers as small company entrepreneurs.  A literature study was conducted to better define the subject of product digitalization. Previous research on smart and connected products as well as related business and market theories were identified as relevant, as well as literature on digital transformation. Based on the literature study, a theoretical framework was formulated in the form of an iterative model on product digitalization, where the business and market mechanics are included. A qualitative case study was then conducted in the form of semi-structured interviews, with topics considered relevant based on the literature study. The empirical data shows many similarities compared to the current literature on the topic. The literature study has identified these aspects as relevant to be considered by an established manufacturing firm and compared them with the case study firm: ·       Digital vision – with clear intent and outcome for both the business and the customer ·       Customer intimacy – services related to smart and connected products will increase the intimacy to the end customer ·       Business model – product sales business model will be transformed by servitization ·       Technology content – smart and connected products need integration of new technologies, such as hardware, software and data management ·       Capabilities – necessary capabilities and the ability to integrate and coordinate these ·       Competitive strategy – using digital technology to gain competitive advantage.  ·       Technology acceptance –what technologies are accepted by the customers and why The case study shows that the firm have identified several key areas affected by product digitalization. Many of these aspects are considered when making strategic decisions, and the members of the organization are including most of them when building scenarios. One area of concern is the ability to integrate and coordinate all necessary functions, both for technology and services. Another is the switch in mindset going from a predictable product business model to a innovate digital one. Offering services will bring them into more direct contact with the customers, and possibly change the role of the dealership network.

Les récentes avancées des technologies de l’information et de la communication ainsi que celles des sciences des données ont permis le développement des produits intelligents et connectés. Ils sont dotés de capacités nouvelles et créatrices de valeurs à la fois pour l’utilisateur et le fabricant. Ces évolutions induisent un important changement de paradigme. Pour intégrer pleinement les potentiels des produits intelligents et connectés, les industriels doivent adopter de nouveaux processus, en particulier lors de leurs conceptions. En effet, les choix des données pouvant être captées par le produit lors de sa conception définissent les créations de valeurs potentielles pour le reste de son cycle de vie. L’objectif de ces travaux de thèse est donc de formaliser une structure méthodologique pour guider les concepteurs dans l’intégration des créations de valeurs basées sur les données captées. Afin de proposer une méthode pertinente et efficace, une exploration des enjeux relatifs à la conception et aux données captées est d’abord réalisée. Sur la base des enjeux identifiés, une méthode est ensuite construite. Elle est structurée en deux phases chacune soutenue par un outil dédié. La première phase est une phase de créativité permettant de générer systématiquement des potentielles créations de valeurs basées sur les données captées. La seconde est une phase de prise de décision permettant de classer systématiquement, sur des critères de soutenabilité, les créations de valeurs précédemment générées. Plusieurs expérimentations ont permis de valider la pertinence et l’efficacité de la proposition méthodologique. Recent advances in information and communication technologies and data science have led to the development of smart connected products. These products have new capabilities that create value for both the user and the manufacturer. These developments are leading to a major paradigm shift. To take full advantage of the potential of smart connected products, manufacturers need to adopt new processes, especially in the design phase. Indeed, the choice of data that can be captured by the product at the design stage defines the potential value creation for the rest of its life cycle. The aim of this thesis is therefore to formalise a methodological structure to guide designers in the integration of value creation based on captured data. In order to propose a relevant and effective method, we first explore the challenges related to design and captured data. Based on the challenges identified, a method is then constructed. It is structured in two phases, each supported by a dedicated tool. The first phase is a creativity phase that systematically generates potential value creation based on captured data. The second phase is a decision-making phase in which the previously generated value creations are systematically ranked according to sustainability criteria. Experiments have validated the relevance and effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Through the method and its tools, this thesis work contributes to scientific and industrial research supporting the paradigm shift brought by digital technologies in product design

Höganäs AB has a customer center where they perform their cutomers production processes usingtheir own metal powder, thereby gaining knowledge of how the powder behaves and how it can be improved. The powder is usually pressed, and then sintered in a sintering furnace where temperature and atmosphere composition gives the component its desired characteristics. Höganäs AB didn’t save the parameters from these process’s in a easily accessible way, some values were not saved at all. To increase understanding of these parameters impact on the produced detail they wanted these parameters collected and stored in the cloud. They also wanted solution ideas and concepts for implementation of weight measuring on both the in- and output side of the furnace. This project used Ulrich & Eppinger’s product development method, modified by performing continous testing parallell to the design process. The project was also separated into three parts worked on simultaneously. Computer architecture, physical casing and weight measuring. To compile and upload to the cloud a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, a micro processor, was used. It connected via WiFi to upload files to OneDrive. The measured values from the furnace were gathered from the furnace’s PLC via OPCUA and a gas measuring unit via serial communication. Because of the use of metal powder there was conductive dust in the air which could lead to leakage currents and short circuiting if it were to gather on the processor unit. Hence the dust had to be keptaway. The casing was therefore designed to be relatively airtight. The casing was made with 3D-printed PETG. The seal utilized PETG’s elasticity to elastically deform an elevated seal, and thereby sealing the casing, without having to produce more components than a bottom and a lid. The cable feedthrough used the cables elastic deformation to seal. A screen was implemented to start and stop logging processes, which was also sealed using an overlapping lip around it’s rim. The logging of the furnace parameters was split in two logs, a day-log and a job-log. The daylog took measurements continously over a day in long intervals, 30 minutes. At the end of the day a log was uploaded for that day, hence the name. The job-log had to be started manually via the screen and was used to take measurements with higher frequency during a production series. Log files of both types were uploaded to a OneDrive folder. The product was tested with a number of final tests, both for the casing and the software. The casing was tested primarily for the numerical requirements set in the requirements specification. While the software was tested over a longer period of time to ensure functionality.The final product was a sealed, robust, easily disassembled and cable strain relieved 3D-printed box with a 3.5 inch touchscreen and a connected keyboard. It collected the desired data and compiled it to log files readable by programs such as Microsoft Excel. The weight measuring concept produced was a self-made solution with load cells under the loading ramp. The weight is then measured automatically during the regular loading process without disrupting it. Two backup solutions were also put forward.

Estudamos inicialmente resultados de classificação de difeomorfismos de produtos de esferas de mesma dimensão. Tratado isto, estudamos os mergulhos suaves de produtos de três esferas, sendo a primeira de dimensão um e as demais de dimensão maior ou igual a um, com a dimensão da última maior ou igual a da segunda, em uma esfera em codimensão um, e buscamos a total caracterização do fecho das duas componentes conexas do complementar de tais mergulhos. Tratamos com enfoque especial os mergulhos do produto de três esferas de dimensão um na esfera de dimensão quatro, e, finalmente, estudamos problemas de classificação de mergulhos PL localmente não-enodados de somas conexas de toros em codimensão um.
We study initially results of classification of difeomorfisms of Cartesian products of spheres of same dimension. Treated this, we study the smooth embeddings of cartesian products of three spheres, being the first one of dimension one and excessively of bigger or equal dimension to one, with the dimension of the last equal greater or of second, in a sphere in codimension one, and search the total characterization of the latch of the two connected components of complementing of such embeddings. We deal with special approach the embeddings of the product to three spheres to dimension one in the sphere dimension four, and, finally, we study problems of classification of PL locally unknotted embeddings of connected sums of torus on codimension one.

Ces dernières années, les produits dits « intelligents » ont été introduits dans de nombreux domaines tels que l’industrie, la santé et le transport. Ces produits sont devenus sources d’informations durant leurs phases d’utilisations. L’obtention de ces informations constitue un avantage certain pour les différents acteurs intervenant dans le cycle de vie du produit. Le nombre important d’acteurs et la diversité des besoins exprimés rendent complexe la mise en œuvre des chaines informationnelles entre produit et acteurs en phase d’utilisation, ainsi que la génération de flux d’informations vers les phases amont et aval du cycle de vie. S’appuyant notamment sur les concepts développés par la communauté CL2M (Closed Loop Lifecycle Management), cette thèse propose une architecture « générique » permettant de modéliser les chaines informationnelles et les processus décisionnels associés à un produit lors de sa phase d’utilisation. Cette architecture repose sur l’utilisation de fonctions secondaires associées au produit ainsi que des concepts holoniques permettant de prendre en compte le produit, sa décomposition en sous-produits et son contexte (i.e. environnement, tâche et utilisateur(s)). L’architecture s’inspire également de la typologie de Rasmussen pour caractériser différents niveaux cognitifs au sein des processus décisionnels. Un guide méthodologique est également proposé pour aider au déploiement de telles chaines informationnelles et décisionnelles. L’architecture proposée est mise en œuvre et validée dans le cadre d’une plateforme POC (Proof of Concept). In recent years, “smart products” have been introduced in many areas such as industry, health and transportation systems. These products are sources of information during their use phases. Collecting, processing this information is a definite advantage to aid the various stakeholders involved in the product lifecycle to improve the value chain. The large number of stakeholders and the diversity of their needs make it difficult to implement the information chains between the product and the stakeholders in the use phase (as well as the generation of information flows towards the upstream and downstream phases of the life cycle). Based on the concepts developed by the Closed Loop Lifecycle Management (CL2M) community, this thesis proposes a model of generic architecture for modeling the information chains and decision-making processes associated with a product during its use phase. The proposed model relies on secondary functions associated with the product, on holonic concepts, on product context (i.e. environment, task and user(s)) and on decision-making processes. This last point is inspired on Rasmussen's typology to characterize different cognitive levels. A methodological guide is also proposed helping to transform the model into operational architecture implementing information chains. The proposed architecture is implemented and validated as part of a POC (Proof of Concept) platform. Both the model and the guide are evaluated through scenarios representative of the use of a "smart" industrial test connector in the automotive field

Governo Eletrônico é uma iniciativa dos Estados para oferecer produtos e serviços eletrônicos a cidadãos, organizações públicas e privadas, turistas e até mesmo a outros governos. O amplo número de usuários e a variedade de produtos e serviços oferecidos e mantidos por instituições públicas são fatores que dificultam o gerenciamento das demandas por novos produtos e serviços e também a manutenção e evolução dos já existentes, principalmente porque existem diferentes fontes de requisitos e a necessidade de atender às legislações e regimentos definidos pela próprias instituição e por instâncias superiores. Avaliações internas e externas e pesquisas realizadas em instituições específicas mostram que as instituições públicas tem grande dificuldade em atender às demandas de seus usuários e fornecer produtos e serviços de software com a qualidade esperada tanto pelos usuários quanto pelo governo federal no que se refere aos padrões de governo eletrônico definidos em legislações específicas. Nesse sentido, acredita-se que a Gestão de Produto de Software (GPS) pode despontar como força motriz para apoiar instituições públicas no fornecimento e manutenção de produtos de software com qualidade, uma vez que ela abrange todo o ciclo de vida de desenvolvimento de produtos de software tendo como foco tanto uma perspectiva técnica quanto de negócio. Um dos fatores impeditivos ao uso de modelos de GPS em instituições públicas é o fato de esses modelos terem sido concebidos inicialmente para organizações privadas e não levar em consideração particularidades do setor público, como a alta burocracia, altar hierarquização e dificuldades de mudanças. Nesse contexto, o objetivo geral deste trabalho é investigar os atores e funções de negócio das universidades federais brasileiras no atendimento a demandas de Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação (TIC), identificando as diferenças e semelhanças com os atores e processos definidos por modelos de referência de GPS definidos na literatura. Além do mais, de forma adicional, é proposto um modelo de GPS adaptado ao contexto das universidades públicas. Todo o processo metodológico deste estudo baseou-se em um conjunto de 5 passos, iniciados a partir de uma revisão sistemática. Dentre os resultados deste trabalho estão um estudo de caso que explica o contexto do desenvolvimento de software nas universidades federais sob a perspectiva de GPS; a construção de um instrumento de pesquisa para captação do estado da prática de GPS nas universidades federais; definição de um modelo inicial de GPS para governo eletrônico no setor de educação superior e um conjunto de recomendações de boa práticas sugeridas para implementar atividades de GPS de forma eficiente
Electronic Government or e-Government is an initiative that provides services to groups of users through an electronic system. Among these users may be other governments, public and private organizations, tourists, and citizens. When analyzing the wide use of Internet resources and the development of software driven by the complexity of the amount of information, there is a need to evaluate the directions of e-government. In this sense, Software Product Management (GPS) emerges as a driving force for success in software products, as it covers the entire lifecycle development, ensuring a technical and business perspective, which, with its many interfaces, business and stakeholders throughout the life cycle of a product. In this context, the general objective of this work is to investigate the actors and business functions of Brazilian federal universities in meeting ICT demands, identifying the differences and similarities with the actors and processes defined by GPS reference models defined in the literature. In addition, a GPS model adapted to the context of public universities is proposed. The whole methodological process of this study was based on a set of 5 steps, started from a systematic review. Among the results of this work are a case study that explains the context of software development in federal universities from the perspective of GPS; the construction of a research instrument to capture the state of GPS practice in federal universities; definition of an initial GPS model for e-government in the higher education sector, and a set of best practice recommendations suggested to implement GPS activities efficiently

For many, literature and marketing are considered opposite phenomena. This book discusses cases in which the two are closely connected. It argues that literature is subject to the same mechanisms as other commercial products: our experience of literary texts is prefigured by brands, trademarks that identify a product and differentiate it from its competitors. From the early modern period onwards, literary authors and their texts are constantly ‘branded’ and have been both the object and the trailblazer of a complex marketing process. The authors of this volume analyze this branding process throughout the centuries, focusing on the Netherlands. To what extent is our experience of Dutch literature prefigured by brands, and what role does branding play when introducing European authors in the Dutch literary field (or vice versa)? By answering these questions, Branding Books Across the Ages seeks to show how literary scholars understand branding – a phenomenon that has long been intertwined with literature.

The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) has created an unanticipated rise of smart and connected products in the consumer market. While, smart and connected products have become a fundamental part of our day to day life, consumer’s perspective regarding these smart and connected products still remains an uncharted territory. This paper tries to explore how these “smart” and “connected” products are perceived in the consumer market and what are the key driving factors behind the unparalleled success of these products. In order to answer these questions, the authors first determined the “smartness” and “connectivity” criteria to judge all the products based on the most commonly used rating systems for such products. Followed by a case study analysis to determine if there is a correlation between “smartness”, “connectivity” and other product parameters. It is discovered that “smartness” as defined in the paper, is a resource intensive component of a product and therefore, directly affects the price of a product. On the other hand, consumers are more receptive to “connectivity” aspect of a product. The correlations found in the paper could help fill the gaps between areas of focus for technology development in the industry and user demands.

The discrete-valued neural network proposed by Hopfield requires zero-diagonal terms in the memory matrix so that the net evolves toward a local minimum of an energy function. For a version of this model with bipolar nodes and positive terms along the diagonal, the net evolves so that only updates that lower the energy by a sufficient amount are accepted. For a net programmed as an outer-product associative content-addressable memory with randomly coded memories, the version with nonzero-diagonal elements performs nearly identically to one with zero-diagonal terms. The dropping of the zero-diagonal requirement may be advantageous for optical implementation in that it allows the memory to configure as a cascade of an inner product operation and weighted summation operation and does not require explicit update of the connectivity matrix.

Today’s connected products increasingly allow us to collect and analyze information on how they are actually used. An engineering activity where usage data can prove particularly useful, and be converted to actionable engineering knowledge, is simulation: user behavior is often hard to model, and collected data representing real user interactions as simulation input can increase realism of simulations. This is especially useful for (i) investigating use-related phenomena that influence the product’s performance and (ii) evaluating design variations on how they succeed in coping with real users and their behaviors. In this paper we explored time-stamped usage data from connected refrigerators, investigating the influence of door openings on energy consumption and evaluating control-related design variations envisaged to mitigate negative effects of door openings. We used a fast-executing simulation setup that allowed us to simulate much faster than real time and investigate usage over a longer time. According to our first outcomes, door openings do not affect energy consumption as much as some literature suggests. Through what-if studies we could evaluate three design variations and nevertheless point out that particular solution elements resulted in better ways of dealing with door openings in terms of energy consumption.

This paper studies the role of buyer market power in determining the response of international prices to exchange rate changes (i.e., exchange rate pass-through). Using a novel dataset of the universe of Colombian export transactions that links Colombian exporters (sellers) to their foreign importers (buyers), I document three facts: i) most Colombian exports are concentrated in a few foreign buyers in each market, ii) the same seller charges different prices to different buyers in the same product and destination, and iii) markets with a higher concentration of sales among buyers display lower exchange rate pass-through. Motivated by these stylized facts, I propose an open economy model of oligopsony, a market with large number of sellers and a few buyers, that accounts for buyer market power in international markets and its consequences for price determination in international transactions. The model shows that larger foreign buyers pay a marked-down price, i.e., a price below the marginal product value for the buyer. Most importantly, these markdowns are flexible and play a role when adjusting prices to exchange rate shocks. I derive a model-based equation relating pass-through to buyer size and estimate it on the micro transaction level data for Colombia. I find that after an exchange rate shock, sellers connected to larger buyers face more moderate changes in their prices in the seller currency (i.e., lower exchange rate pass-through) than those connected to small buyers. Pass-through ranges from 1% for firms connected with the largest buyers to 17% for firms connected with the smallest buyers. I use the estimates from the empirical analysis to calibrate the model and propose a counterfactual where buyer market power is eliminated. Under this scenario, sellers' revenues increase; however, the price in seller currency is more responsive to exchange rate shocks.

This paper presents a growth diagnostic exercise for Peru. It notes that although Peru has recently enjoyed high rates of economic growth, this growth is actually a recovery from a significant and sustained growth collapse that began in the 1970s, caused by a decline in export earnings due to the fall in international prices and an inadequate investment regime in export activities. However, the transformation of the export sector has been surprisingly small: the same activities that declined- mining and energy- are the ones that are leading the current recovery in exports. The authors argue that the lack of structural transformation is associated with Peru's position in a poorly connected part of the product space. The key policy message is that the public sector must act to encourage the development of new export activities that better utilize the human resources of the country.

Currently, during automated vehicle trials there are two personnel present within each test vehicle: the Safety Driver and the Test Assistant. This summary report presents recommendations on how to progress to advanced trials and perform the roles of the Safety Driver and Test Assistant remotely. The recommendations are based on a literature review and a stakeholder engagement. It was found that the terminology relating to remote operation used by the industry is inconsistent, so key terminology has been produced with the aim of promoting common use. The summary of roles, requirements and responsibilities of Safety Drivers, Test Assistants, and the Remote Operators (who would replace them) are presented. Following this, recommendations are given to enable remote operation of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). Finally, these recommendations have been used to generate a roadmap to enable remote operation of CAVs in the UK.

This research project was a collaboration of several research organizations, product manufacturers and fire service representatives to examine hazards associated with residential flooring systems to improve firefighter safety. Funding for this project was provided through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant Program. The main objective of this study was to improve firefighter safety by increasing the level of knowledge on the response of residential flooring systems to fire. Several types (or series) of experiments were conducted and analyzed to expand the body of knowledge on the impact of fire on residential flooring systems. The results of the study have been prepared to provide tactical considerations for the fire service to enable improved decision making on the fire scene. Experiments were conducted to examine several types of floor joists including, dimensional lumber, engineered I-joists, metal plate connected wood trusses, steel C-joists, castellated I-joists and hybrid trusses. Experiments were performed at multiple scales to examine single floor system joists in a laboratory up through a full floor system in an acquired structure. Applied load, ventilation, fuel load, span and protection methods were altered to provide important information about the impact of these variables to structural stability and firefighter safety. There are several tactical considerations that result from this research that firefighters can use immediately to improve their understanding, safety and decision making when sizing up a fire in a one or two family home. This report summarizes the results from each of the experimental series and provides discussion and conclusions of the results.

Crime and the durability of goods are strongly connected issues. However, surprisingly, they have been studied separately. This paper explores the relationship between the production of durable goods and crime from a theoretical perspective and draws important conclusions for both topics. Crime affects the consumer and producer surplus and thus the behavior of consumers, firms, the market equilibrium, and, in turn, the social optimum. Lower durability of goods reduces the incentive to steal those goods, thus reducing crime. When crime is included in the standard framework of durable goods, the socially optimal durability level is lower. Even without considering the negative non-market externalities of crime, perfect competition does not provide the optimal durability level. When considering different stealing technologies, perfect competition either over-produces durability or produces zero (minimum) durability. The monopolist under-produces durability regardless of the stealing technology considered. If all the crime externalities are taken into account, the socially optimal durability level is reduced further and gets closer to that which prevails under monopoly. The model has a clear policy implication: the durability of goods, and the market structure for those goods, can be an effective instrument to reduce crime. Анотація:
To maintain the integrity and reliability of natural gas transportation systems, system operators ensure that products in transit remain in the gas phase under foreseeable operating conditions. Compliance with pipeline hydrocarbon dew point (HCDP) specifications are demonstrated though in-situ testing or predictive models based on Equations of State (EOS) calculations. Numerical prediction of HCDP is a product of contributing elements, including gas chromatography, calibration gas quality, thermophysical science and the experimental data that underpins equations of state. Some hydrocarbon mixtures, such as those from non-traditional gas supplies, are more difficult to sample and assess than others. The methods described in this paper and accompanying spreadsheet examples are designed to assist persons in making technically defendable decisions with respect to predictive methods and the operational impacts of liquid dropout. The primary focus of this work is to connect the over-all performance of HCDP prediction to its operational implications. The secondary objective of the work is to provide tools for assessing the potential benefit from using C9+ versus C6+ gas chromatographs.

This briefing paper highlights the potential benefits of humanitarian decision-making tools through the application of a decision support tool developed as part of the EPSRC-funded Humanitarian Engineering and Energy for Displacement (HEED) project led by Coventry University in partnership with Practical Action and Scene Connect. HEED draws upon social science and engineering expertise to better understand energy needs and identify solutions which produce socio-technical systems that encourage community resilience and capacity building.

Non-intrusive techniques such as medical CT-Scan or micro-CT allow the definition of 3D connected pore networks in porous materials, such as sedimentary rocks or concrete. The definition of these networks is a key step towards the evaluation of fluid flow and heat transfer in energy resource (e.g., hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs) and CO2 sequestration research projects. As material heterogeneities play a role at all scales (from micro- to project-scale), numerical models represent a powerful tool for bridging the gap between small-scale measurements provided by X-ray imaging techniques and larger-scale transport properties. This study uses pre-existing medical CT-scan datasets of reference material, namely glass beads and conventional reservoir rocks (Berea sandstone, Boise sandstone, Indiana limestone) to extract the 3D geometry of connected pores using an open-source software (Spam). Pore networks from rock samples were generated from dry and then saturated samples. Binarized datasets were produced for these materials (generated by a thresholding technique) to obtain pore size distribution and tortuosity, as well as preferential paths for fluid flow. Average porosities were also calculated for comparison with those obtained by conventional commercial laboratory techniques. The results obtained show that this approach works well for medium and coarse-grained materials that do not contain a large percentage of fine particles. However, this approach does not allow representative networks to be obtained for fine-grained rocks, due to the fact that small pores (or pore throats) cannot be taken into account in the datasets obtained from the medical CT-Scan. A next step, using datasets produced from a micro- CT scan, is planned in order to be able to generate representative networks in this type of material as well.

Анотація:
In this report, we share insights from a Research-Practice-Industry Partnership (RPIP) that explored mathematics instructional practices with support of digital mathematics tools. RPIPs bring together researchers, practitioners, and product developers, with each party having an equal voice, in a rapid-cycle model for edtech research and development. We framed this RPIP using the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL): provide multiple means of Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression. These principles support learner variability, improve accessibility, and are closely aligned with mathematics education research, which highlights the multimodal nature of mathematics and the need to use and connect multiple representations to help students develop understanding of mathematics concepts.
