La lagune de Smir a été sujette à un aménagement (construction d'un barrage et d'un port de plaisance) qui a contribué à la modification de son système hydrologique notamment, la disparition de certaines espèces de flore et de faune et la réduction de superficies considérables de cet écosystème. Une caractérisation des eaux de cette lagune a porté sur la mesure pendant le reflux, d'un ensemble de paramètres physico-chimiques. Une méthodologie a été suivie afin d'exprimer de façon cartographique les résultats. De même, des suivis d'une journée ont été réalisés pour les eaux entrantes et sortantes au niveau de deux stations fixes, dans une tentative de comprendre l'action de la marée sur l'hydrologie au sein de la lagune, de cerner les caractéristiques des eaux entrantes dans la lagune et celles sortantes de celle-ci et de suivre l'évolution des différents paramètres physico-chimiques au cours des cycles marégraphiques. L'évolution spatiale des paramètres hydrologiques au niveau de la lagune, se réalise sous forme de gradients entre l'aval et l'amont. Elle est fonction des saisons, de la marée et des apports de l'Oued Smir et du Chenal principal venant des marais. La lagune subit le flux et le reflux de la marée d'un mètre d'amplitude environ. Combinée avec le déficit en eaux douces, la communication permanente avec la mer a eu pour conséquence l'augmentation générale de la salinité dans le plan d'eau lagunaire et dans les marais. Le fonctionnement hydrologique de la lagune de Smir se trouve actuellement régi par les facteurs hydrodynamiques liés à la marée (réguliers) et aux apports d'eaux véhiculés par le chenal des marais (irréguliers), auxquels peuvent être ajoutés des facteurs physiques (évaporation intense), bathymétriques (faible profondeur) et physiologiques (photosynthèse des macrophytes et des phanérogames dans la lagune et dans les marais limitrophes).

RésuméLa formation de nappes de glace stratifiée est un phénomène hydrologique cou- rant en milieu subarctique. Il résulte de l'accumulation d'écoulements successifs pendant l'hiver. La taille et l'épaisseur des couches de glace sont déterminées par l'interaction entre les systèmes microclimatologique et hydrologique de l'eau de surface. On étudie ici les échanges d'énergie suivant différentes épaisseurs de nappes de glace. Dans le cas d'épaisses nappes d'écoulement, les couches de glace prennent plus de temps à geler entièrement en raison de la plus grande quantité de chaleur latente emmagasinée dans les volumes d'eau. Des températures de l'air plus douces vont davantage ralentir le processus. Dans de telles conditions, l'eau circulant entre le couvert de glace supérieur et la glace sous-jacente procure des quantités d'énergie appréciables. De 60 à 87 % de l'énergie est fournie par l'eau libre. Avec des températures progressivement plus froides, l'englaciation accélérée réduit le temps d'écoulement de l'eau, diminuant ainsi la quantité relative d'énergie fournie par l'eau. Dans ce cas, l'énergie est livrée par la chaleur latente libérée par le gel de l'eau contenue dans la couche de débordement. Dans certaines conditions, l'absortion du rayonnement solaire produit aussi une quantité considérable d'entrée d'énergie dans le régime thermique. Cette énergie est libérée par l'entremise de pertes appréciables de chaleur irradiante. Pendant la formation d'une nappe de glace, la chaleur latente est la moins importante, ne comptant que pour 6 à 17 % de la perte totale de chaleur.

Le poids des technologies dans la définition des qualités organoleptiques des viandes est indéniable. Parmi ces qualités, nous avons choisi de nous intéresser plus particulièrement à la tendreté et au processus d’attendrissage puisque, chez le bovin, cette caractéristique constitue le facteur limitant le plus important de l’acceptabilité par le consommateur. Cette revue tente de tracer un panorama des effets des conditions de réfrigération, de la congélation, de la vitesse de chute de pH, de la stimulation électrique et des promoteurs de croissance sur la tendreté de la viande. Concernant la température, il apparaît que des conditions de réfrigération trop douces ou trop rapides conduisent à une diminution de la tendreté. Vitesse de chute du pH et température étant étroitement interdépendantes, une relation similaire a été établie entre la tendreté finale et la vitesse d’acidification du muscle, des vitesses trop rapides de chute du pH (abaissement de la température très lent) ou trop lentes (abaissement de la température très rapide) conduisant à l’obtention de viandes plus dures. La tendreté de la viande sera donc optimum dans des conditions de réfrigération intermédiaires entre ces deux extrêmes. La congélation de muscles post-rigor affecte principalement la rétention d’eau et cette qualité sera d’autant mieux préservée que la congélation sera rapide et la décongélation lente. Par contre, ce traitement semble accélérer le processus d’attendrissage, probablement au travers de l’altération, par les cristaux de glace de la structure contractile et des protéines myofibrillaires elles-mêmes. La stimulation électrique des carcasses en basse (20 à 100 V) ou en haute tension (500 à 700 V) qui permet de prévenir l’apparition du phénomène de contracture au froid, n’a un effet bénéfique sur la tendreté que lorsqu’elle est associée à une réfrigération rapide. Associée à une réfrigération lente, elle conduit en effet à un durcissement de la viande. Quelle que soit leur nature, les promoteurs de croissance semblent avoir des effets néfastes sur les qualités de la viande et plus particulièrement la tendreté.

Cet article présente l'utilisation réussie de films minces électrodéposés de birnessite, un matériau non toxique à base d'un élément abondant, en tant que matériau d'électrode pour le développement d'un traitement électrochimique simple, efficace, peu onéreux et facile à mettre en œuvre dans des conditions très douces, pour dégrader et minéraliser des polluants organiques. L'idée originale consiste à coupler les propriétés oxydantes naturelles de la birnessite à un traitement d'oxydation électrochimique dans le but d'augmenter ses capacités de dégradation. Deux polluants pertinents ont été testés. Le glyphosate (N-(phosphonométhyl) glycine) est le principe actif du Roundup(r), un herbicide à large spectre le plus utilisé dans le monde. En raison de cette utilisation intensive, le glyphosate est un des pesticides le plus retrouvé dans l'environnement. L'AMPA (acide aminométhylphosphonique) est le principal métabolite du glyphosate, plus toxique et persistant que son parent. Ce composé peut provenir aussi de la dégradation des acides phosphoniques présents dans les détergents, et c'est pourquoi l'AMPA se retrouve également très fréquemment dans l'environnement, notamment en milieu urbain, et très récemment en milieu marin. De très bonnes capacités de minéralisation ont été obtenues pour ces deux polluants (0,720 g glyphosate minéralisé / g birnessite ; 0,105 g AMPA minéralisé / g birnessite) à des coûts énergétiques très bas, ce qui permet d'envisager des applications potentielles pour des traitements soit à des concentrations de niveau environnemental en complément de traitements existants, soit directement à la source de pollution.

Cet article aborde les enjeux de l’externalisation de l’accès à des douches à Lyon. En traitant le cas d’une grande ville où ne subsiste qu’un seul bains-douches, l’article explore les effets de la prise en charge de l’accès à l’hygiène par des accueils de jour, des lieux associatifs fréquentés par des personnes sans-domicile fixe, subventionnés par la puissance publique. Ce cas d’étude est illustratif de dynamiques plus larges affectant les politiques sociales locales, où l’on assiste à une recomposition de l’action publique par sa « démunicipalisation » et une prise en charge par d’importantes associations caritatives d’origine religieuse. L’accès aux douches, central dans les parcours des personnes sans-domicile fixe, se trouve réduit par ce processus d’externalisation. L’organisation spatiale témoigne de la moindre importance accordée aux douches, comparativement aux autres services des accueils de jours. L’accès à ces douches, comme leur entretien, est en outre soumis à des organisations du travail constamment précaires, reposant sur des travailleur·euse·s sociaux·ales aux conditions de travail dégradées et à la présence de bénévoles indispensables pour le fonctionnement des lieux.

Les porcins assurent environ 35 % de la production de viande au niveau mondial, à égalité avec la volaille (FAOstat, 2019). En Afrique subsaharienne, cette proportion est largement inférieure en raison d’une forte tradition de production bovine et des interdits religieux autour de la consommation de viande de porc dans de larges parties de la zone. Elle représente cependant 11,9 % de la production de viande de la région et sa croissance a été de 50 % entre 2007 et 2017. Dans les régions où elle est pratiquée, la porciculture joue un rôle social et économique important lorsqu’elle se pratique à petite échelle, souvent combinée à d’autres activités agricoles.La production porcine se heurte cependant à de nombreuses difficultés sanitaires (peste porcine africaine, zoonoses), techniques (génétique, alimentation) et sociales (acceptabilité des élevages autour des lieux d’habitation). Face à ces défis, de nombreuses équipes de recherche sont mobilisées dans les différents pays producteurs. Cependant, les chercheurs sont souvent isolés et peinent à faire connaître leurs travaux à la communauté scientifique et à intégrer les réseaux scientifiques internationaux.Ce numéro thématique rassemble treize articles originaux et synthèses consacrés à la porciculture en région tropicale. Les questions socio-économiques sont abordées à travers des exemples de filières en Afrique mais aussi au Vietnam ou dans les Caraïbes. Les travaux présentés montrent les difficultés de ces filières soumises à des contraintes multiples. Souvent périurbaine, la production porcine doit se faire discrète et notamment minimiser ses nuisances. Ces conditions rendent difficiles une structuration et une professionnalisation qui permettraient un appui accru des autorités et une diminution des risques zoonotiques. Les systèmes d’élevage doivent en outre s’adapter à des contextes changeants où leur industrialisation bouleverse leur fonctionnement technique et économique et remet en question leur rôle dans les systèmes traditionnels basés sur l’intégration agriculture-élevage.Au niveau technique, l’alimentation reste la contrainte majeure pour les producteurs et le principal coût de production dans les contextes étudiés. Des pistes d’utilisation de ressources locales (tourteaux d’hévéa ou d’anacarde, patates douces) sont proposées pour diminuer l’incorporation d’ingrédients plus onéreux. Les pratiques d’alimentation autour du sevrage peuvent également améliorer le démarrage des animaux et leurs performances ultérieures. Enfin, les choix génétiques sont mis en débat, soit pour comparer les performances des porcs locaux ou améliorés, soit pour promouvoir des races locales à valeur patrimoniale.Les questions sanitaires restent une inquiétude majeure. En Afrique, la peste porcine africaine demeure une menace constante ; de plus, les pathologies sont nombreuses et impactent fortement la production. Les caractéristiques des systèmes de production et de commercialisation augmentent les risques de contamination et rendent difficiles les politiques de prévention. Il y a pourtant un défi sanitaire majeur pour les filières porcines car, au-delà de l’impact sur la production, les zoonoses, mais aussi la dispersion de souches microbiennes résistantes aux antibiotiques, sont des enjeux de santé publique prioritaire. Continuer la recherche, partager les résultats, constituer des réseaux nationaux, régionaux et internationaux : voilà autant d’efforts qui doivent être poursuivis. Au travers de ce numéro thématique, la Revue continue son travail de valorisation des résultats les plus marquants obtenus par des chercheurs travaillant dans des conditions matérielles et partenariales parfois difficiles. Nous pouvons d’ores et déjà annoncer que d’autres articles, en complément de ce numéro thématique, seront publiés dans les prochains numéros de la Revue afin de maintenir notre engagement en faveur de la promotion de la recherche porcine dans les Suds.

AbstractThe value of tubal inflation as a diagnostic procedure for Eustachian tube patency and function is controversial. In an attempt to assess the diagnostic value of air douche in atelectatic ears, 49 such ears of 40 patients were politzerized. The procedure was successful in 45 ears. However, of the four unsuccessful cases, two of the patients were able to autoinflate their ears. These results show that air douches pass regularly through the Eustachian tube into the tympanic cavity even in atelectatic ears, which by definition suffer from aeration deficiency, which is often considered to be secondary to ‘Eustachian tube obstruction’, or alternatively ‘Eustachian tube dysfunction’. Thus, the ability to force air through the Eustachian tube by politzerization is of no diagnostic value as an indicator of normal or abnormal tubal patency or functioning in atelectatic ears and most probably in allied conditions.

The processing conditions for ready-to-proof (RTP) and ready-to-bake (RTB) frozen sweet bread doughs were optimized using response surface methodology. A central composite design determined four factors and the tested range for each factor: a first fermentation time of 15~45 min, a second fermentation time of 30~90 min, a freezing temperature of −45~−25 °C, and a freezing time of 30~90 min. Sweet bread produced with these doughs was evaluated by bread weight, moisture content, crust color, height, volume, and firmness. Both the RTP and RTB doughs resulted in equal bread volume and height to the fresh dough, indicating excellent frozen stability. The first and second fermentation times were the significant processing factors for the RTP and RTB doughs influencing representative bread quality attributes based on quadratic models and ANOVA. Fermentation steps appeared to more significantly contribute to the quality of sweet bread made of frozen dough than freezing steps. The optimized RTP and RTB sweet bread dough processing conditions were the long first and second fermentation times for the dough based on a multiple response method and desirability. The optimum processing conditions for the RTP and RTB doughs were 44.7 min for the first fermentation time, 86.3 min for the second fermentation time, a −32.8 °C freezing temperature, and an 85.5 min freezing time.

Le biodiesel est un mélange d'esters mono-alkyl utilisé comme carburant alternatif au diesel. Il est obtenu par transestérification des huiles végétales ou de graisses animales par un alcool léger.L'objectif de ce travail consiste en la recherche de catalyseurs solides acides ou basiques capables de promouvoir la réaction de transestérification de l'huile de colza par l'éthanol en conditions aussi douces que celles utilisées en catalyse homogène basique. Pour cela, deux séries de solides acides et basiques ont été préparées et caractérisées par différentes techniques (ATG-ATD, DRX, Isotherme N2). Les propriétés acides et basiques de ces solides ont également été étudiées par calorimétrie et spectroscopie Infra Rouge. Des corrélations entre les activités initiales et les propriétés acides ou basiques de ces catalyseurs ont été recherchées. L'influence des principaux paramètres réactionnels a été examinée sur le catalyseur acide et le catalyseur basique, les plus actifs. Puis une étude cinétique comparative a été réalisée. Enfin la valorisation in situ du glycérol, produit secondaire de la réaction, a été considérée.Nous avons pu montrer que le sel de césium de l'acide 12-tungstophosphorique est le catalyseur acide le plus actif, dans la gamme de solides acides étudiés. Ceci s'explique par la présence de sites acides de BrØnsted forts aptes à promouvoir la réaction en conditions douces de température. Par ailleurs, il est capable de réaliser l'éthérification in situ du glycérol par l'éthanol. En catalyse basique, le nouveau catalyseur préparé, la zircone échangée au césium, est le catalyseur le plus actif parmi les bases solides étudiées. Ce catalyseur est stable dans le milieu réactionnel après élimination par lavage à chaud des espèces Cs labiles. La comparaison des deux catalyseurs montre que la catalyse basique est nettement plus rapide que la catalyse acide. L'étude cinétique permet de proposer des différences mécanistiques entre ces deux types de catalyseurs.

Les quantités de cendres volantes (CV) produites par la combustion du charbon dans les centrales thermiques sont très importantes, et, même si différentes voies de valorisation existent, leurs applications restent à faible valeur ajoutée. Les CV sont riches en Si et Al et apparaissent alors comme des sources de réactifs potentielles pour la synthèse de zéolithes, matériaux microporeux alumino-siliciques à forte valeur ajoutée. Récemment, de nombreuses études ont été consacrées à la zéolithisation des CV, mais le plus souvent, la transformation se fait par voie hydrothermale à des températures ≥ 100 °C et à pression autogène. L’originalité de cette étude est le développement d’un procédé économique de transformation des CV par voie hydrothermale à basse température (≤ 50 °C) et à pression atmosphérique. Dans un premier temps, les CV ont été caractérisées, l’objectif principal étant la détermination de leur composition minéralogique (quartz, mullite et phase amorphe) ainsi que de leur réactivité. Puis, la synthèse consiste simplement à ajouter une solution de soude aux CV. Les quantités nécessaires de soude et d’eau ont été optimisées dans le but de synthétiser de la faujasite X, le rapport Al2O3/SiO2 (x) du mélange réactionnel étant fixé par la composition des cendres. Avec cette composition (1SiO2 : xAl2O3 : 3,8NaOH : 73,5H2O), la cinétique de transformation des cendres à 30 et à 50 °C a été étudiée par différentes techniques (DRX, adsorption d’azote, RMN du solide, spectrométrie d’absorption atomique et MEB), et un mécanisme de transformation est proposé. Quelles que soient la température et la durée de synthèse, le solide obtenu est un mélange de faujasite et de résidus de quartz, de mullite et de phase amorphe des CV. Il contient également des traces de deux autres zéolithes, la zéolithe NaP1 et la chabazite. L’élévation de température de 30 à 50 °C accélère la transformation, mais finalement, les taux de conversion atteints aux deux températures sont proches : environ 25 à 30 %. D’autres expériences ont été réalisées dans le but d’augmenter le rendement de la réaction : l’ajout de silice au mélange réactionnel, ainsi qu’une méthode de synthèse indirecte consistant à traiter les cendres par une solution acide (HCl) avant leur zéolithisation. Ces essais permettent d’augmenter le taux de conversion qui, dans le cas le plus favorable, dépasse 50 % de faujasite dans le produit final anhydre de la synthèse<br>The amount of fly ashes (FAs) produced by the coal combustion in thermal power stations is huge, and even if part of these FAs is reused, their applications have a low-added-value. As the FAs are rich in Si and Al, they can be seen as potential sources for the synthesis of zeolites. These aluminosilicate materials are microporous and display a high added value. Recently, many studies have been devoted to the conversion of FAs into various zeolites. Generally, the FA transformation is performed by a hydrothermal synthesis close or above 100 °C and at autogeneous pressure. The originality of this study is the development of a cost-saving process allowing the FA transformation into zeolite by a hydrothermal reaction at low temperature (below 50 °C) and at atmospheric pressure. The FAs were first characterised by different techniques, the most important objective being the determination of their mineralogical composition (quartz, mullite and amorphous phase) but also of their reactivity. Then, the synthesis consists simply in the addition of a NaOH solution to the FAs. The needed NaOH and water amounts were optimised in order to form an X-type faujasite, the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio (x) of the synthesis medium being fixed by the chemical composition of the FAs. Using this composition (1SiO2: xAl2O3: 3,8NaOH: 73,5H2O), the transformation kinetics of the FAs were studied at 30 and 50 °C by different methods (XRD, nitrogen adsorption, solid state NMR, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and SEM), and a transformation mechanism is proposed. Whatever the temperature and the synthesis time, the solid obtained is a mixture of faujasite, and residual quartz, mullite and amorphous phase from the FAs, but it contains also traces of two other zeolites, namely NaP1 zeolite and chabazite. The temperature increase from 30 to 50 °C speeds up the reaction, but finally, the maximal conversion rates reached at both temperatures are close: about 25 to 30 %. Other experiments were performed in order to increase the conversion yield, i. E. The addition of silica to the synthesis medium or an indirect synthesis method consisting in an acid treatment (HCl) of the FAs prior to the classic hydrothermal reaction. These experiments allowed increasing the conversion rate which is, in the most favourable case, above 50 % offaujasite in the final dried product of the synthesis

Enfin la valorisation in situ du glycérol, produit secondaire de la réaction, a été considérée.Nous avons pu montrer que le sel de césium de l’acide 12-tungstophosphorique est le catalyseur acide le plus actif, dans la gamme de solides acides étudiés. Ceci s’explique par la présence de sites acides de BrØnsted forts aptes à promouvoir la réaction en conditions douces de température. Par ailleurs, il est capable de réaliser l’éthérification in situ du glycérol par l’éthanol. En catalyse basique, le nouveau catalyseur préparé, la zircone échangée au césium, est le catalyseur le plus actif parmi les bases solides étudiées. Ce catalyseur est stable dans le milieu réactionnel après élimination par lavage à chaud des espèces Cs labiles. La comparaison des deux catalyseurs montre que la catalyse basique est nettement plus rapide que la catalyse acide. L’étude cinétique permet de proposer des différences mécanistiques entre ces deux types de catalyseurs<br>Biodiesel is a mixture of mono-alkyl esters used as alternative fuel. It can be obtained by transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats with light alcohols.The objective of this work is the research of acid and basic solid catalysts able to promote the transesterification reaction of rapeseed oil with ethanol in conditions as mild as those used in homogeneous base catalysis. For this, two series of solid acids and bases were prepared and characterized by various characterization techniques (TGA-DTA, XRD, Isothermal N2). Calorimetry and Infrared Spectroscopy have also been used to characterize acid and basic properties. Correlations between initial activity and the acidic or basic properties of these catalysts have been investigated. The influence of the main reaction parameters was examined on the most active acid and basic solid. A comparative kinetic study then allowed us to propose reaction mechanisms. Finally the in situ valorisation of glycerol, a by product of the reaction, was carried out.We have shown that the cesium salt of 12-tungstophosphoric acid catalyst is the most active among the solid acids studied. This is explained by the presence of strong BrØnsted acid sites that are able to promote the reaction under mild temperature conditions. This catalyst is capable of achieving in situ etherification of glycerol with ethanol. In base catalysis, the newly prepared catalyst, zirconia exchanged with Cesium, is the most active catalyst among the solid bases studied. This catalyst is stable in the reaction medium after removal of the labile Cs species by hot washing. Comparison of the two catalysts shows that the base catalysis is much faster than acid catalysis. A kinetic comparative study allows us to propose mechanistic differences between these two types of catalysts

Le premier chapitre traite de la synthèse des substrats choisis pour discerner les possibilités de notre méthodologie et aussi en définir les limites. On y retrouve la synthèse des substrats variés utilisés pour explorer la monocyclisation d'[alpha]-haloéthers liés à un alcène. La synthèse, et les problèmes qui y sont associés, de composés destinés à l'exploration de la bicyclisation d'[alpha]-haloéthers liés à deux alcènes seront également étalés. Le second chapitre présente les résultats issus de notre méthodologie. Une analyse de la démarche amenant à l'optimisation des conditions réactionnelles sera enchâssée. On y retrouvera l'interprétation des résultats de cyclisation selon la modulation de paramètres sur les substrats utilisés : la nature de l'insaturation et la grandeur du cycle. Les avancements de la synthèse des salvinorines par polycyclisation de Prins seront également inclus dans ce chapitre. En effet, les résultats des expériences de bicyclisation avec différents acides de Lewis, suivant notre méthodologie, seront traités parallèlement. Les expériences débouchant à un résultat inusité seront finalement décrites. Le troisième et dernier chapitre décrit nos efforts pour le développement de nouvelles synthèses d'[alpha]-haloéthers en milieu neutre et basique. L'étude exhaustive et le développement innovateur de plusieurs stratégies seront exposés. Nos efforts n'ont pas conduit à une méthode efficace et applicable, mais plusieurs résultats prometteurs isolés justifient la poursuite de cette quête.

Ce travail de thèse s’inspire des mécanismes de fixation et d’activation du dioxygène réalisés au sein des sites actifs de certaines métalloprotéines à fer non héminique impliquées dans des processus divers. Nous avons synthétisé des séries de ligands à motif aminométhylepyridine, et mis au point des complexes dichloroferreux dont la réactivité a été étudiée. Nous formulons l’hypothèse de travail suivante : dans la réaction oxygène-complexe, nous n’envisageons pas un processus initial de réduction du dioxygène par sphère externe, mais bien sa coordination au centre métallique. La cinétique de réaction serait fonction de l’acidité de Lewis au centre métallique. Il y aurait ainsi formation d’une espèce oxygénée. La nature exacte de cet intermédiaire n’est pas connue, et une discussion présentant également des pistes d’investigation est proposée. Le cas particulier des ligands cyanés est examiné avec attention, puisqu’il est observé dans certaines conditions (notamment en présence d’eau) que la fonction nitrile est hydrolysée en amide<br>In order to get insight into the mechanisms by which dioxygen is activated at the active site of some non heminic iron proteins, we have synthesized several series of aminomethylpyridine-containg ligands, and studied the reactivity of the corresponding FeCl2 complexes with dioxygen. We postulate the following hypothesis that activation of dioxygen does not occur by outer sphere mechanism, but through coordination to the iron, which is governed by the Lewis acidity at the metal center. An oxygen-active species is thus formed. The exact nature of this species still remains unknown, but some investigation pathways are discussed. The particular case of complexes with the cyano ligands is examined in detail, since it is observed under certain conditions (in the presence of water) that the cyano function is converted to amide

Des echantillons de cerine hautement dispersee sur l'alumine sont prepares soit par impregnation de ce(no#3)#3. 6h#2o soit par greffage du chelate ce(acac)#4 (acac = pentane-2,4-dionato-o,o). Plusieurs ameliorations sont d'abord apportees aux procedures de synthese et a la caracterisation de ce chelate de cerium(iv). Pour le complexe de cerium(iii) avec le meme ligand, ce(acac)#3. (h#2o)#2. H#2o, une structure est proposee a partir du diagramme de drx et de donnees spectrales (ir, uv-visible, proche ir). Les especes intermediaires resultant de l'impregnation ou du greffage sont ensuite analysees par reflexion diffuse (uv-visible, pir) et analyse gravimetrique. Les nanoparticules de cerine supportee obtenues par l'oxydation de ces especes ont une taille moyenne plus faible dans le cas du greffage (2,5 a 4 nm) que dans celui de l'impregnation (6 a 8 nm). La largeur de bande interdite de la cerine supportee augmente pour des tailles de particules inferieures a 5 nm (effet quantique). Des bandes sont egalement observees au-dela du seuil d'absorption ( < 350 nm) ; elles sont attribuees a des transitions localisees de transfert de charge ce#4#+ o#2# impliquant des ions superficiels a coordinence incomplete. La reduction superficielle de la cerine (massique ou supportee) par l'hydrazine en conditions douces conduit a l'apparition de nouveaux etats electroniques dans la bande interdite. L'etude spectroscopique, principalement par uv-vis et rpe, permet d'associer ces etats a des cations ce#3#+ et a des lacunes anioniques (centres de couleur de type f). Les essais de metallisation selective de la cerine des composites ceo#2/al#2o#3 sont realises selon deux methodes originales, la deposition electroless et la photoreduction a l'interface semi-conducteur/solution. Le but recherche a ete approche dans le cas du palladium, mais pour le platine la deposition selective a echoue, en raison des cinetiques de reduction defavorables. Cependant, les resultats obtenus suggerent une procedure combinee (en deux etapes : irradiation + reduction), qui semble prometteuse pour la fixation selective du platine.

Life history theory has focused on the life cycle tradeoffs faced by individuals who are constrained by the energy they can forage for themselves at each age. However, humans are deeply social and adults transfer food to children for many years, freeing them from this energy constraint but also bringing the risk that parental death could entail the death of all dependent offspring. Multiple simultaneously dependent offspring also bring a family life cycle squeeze in which dependency ratio doubles. Food sharing and alloparenting ameliorate both problems, providing life insurance and smoothing the life cycle squeeze, while permitting humans to rely on food resources that would be too uncertain for isolated individuals. Food sharing and intergenerational transfers in turn affect the way natural selection shapes life histories. We use microsimulations to study evolution of life histories. Births inherit the mother’s genome subject to mutations. Individuals live under different social arrangements and forage with productivity depending on population density. Natural selection on life histories occurs. We examine the way the size and relatedness of sharing group arrangements alter the evolution of life history traits through mutation and natural selection. We consider which social arrangements, with their corresponding evolved life histories, are most successful in a group competition where all face the same density constraint. There is a tradeoff between costs and benefits of sharing. We find that intermediate levels are most successful, unless childhood conditions strongly influence later life productivity.

AbstractNowadays, the importance of molecular crystals and solids with regular structures is increasing in both basic chemistry and applied fields. However, theoretical studies of those systems based on electronic structure theories have been limited. Although density functional theory (DFT) calculations using generalized gradient approximation type functional under periodic boundary condition is effective for such theoretical studies, we need some improvements for calculating the dispersion interaction and the excited state of crystals. Accordingly, in this chapter, two methods for calculating the electronic structures of molecular crystals are discussed: cluster-model/periodic-model (CM/PM)-combined method and quantum mechanics/periodic-molecular mechanics (QM/periodic-MM) method. In the CM/PM-combined method, an infinite crystal system is calculated by the DFT method under periodic boundary condition, and important moieties, which are represented by CMs, are calculated by either DFT method with hybrid-type functionals or wave function theories such as the Møller–Plesset second-order perturbation theory (MP2), spin-component-scaled-MP2, and coupled-cluster singles and doubles theory with perturbative triples (CCSD(T)). This method is useful for gas adsorption into crystals such as metal–organic frameworks. In the QM/periodic-MM method, an important moiety is calculated using a QM method such as the DFT method with hybrid-type functionals and wave function theories, where the effects of the crystal are incorporated into the QM calculation via the periodic MM method using a classical force field. This method is useful for theoretical studies of excited states and chemical reactions. The applications of these methods in the following processes are described in this chapter: adsorption of gas molecules on metal–organic frameworks, chemical reactions in crystals, and luminescence of the crystals of transition metal complexes. To the best of our knowledge, the theoretical calculations conducted in this chapter show one of the successful approaches of electronic structure theories to molecular crystals, because of the reasonable and practical approximations.

The scientific work is devoted to the author’s concepts on improving the legislation on executive proceedings.Before proceeding to the analysis of the current Law of Ukraine «On Executive Proceedings» and the existing Draft Laws No. 3627,No. 5660, the authors focused on the prerequisites for reforming thelegislation on executive proceedings. Significant problems with the enforcement of judgments in Ukraine, the presence of a large number of appeals to the European Court of Human Rights, and the status of a private executor was initiated in order to relieve the burden on state executors. But with the appearance of private contractors, there was a need to regulate, at the legislative level, their status, self-governance, powers and responsibilities. Therefore, it is now necessary to amend the Law of Ukraine «On Executive Proceedings» and the Law of Ukraine «On Bodies and Persons Carrying Out Enforcement of Decisions of Courts and Other Bodies (Officials). Several draft laws have appeared, but all of them talk about the need to combine the above-mentioned laws into one regulatory act.
 However, at the same time, experts worked on three draft laws, instead of making maximum efforts to thoroughly work on one draft law and gradually eliminate its shortcomings using the «sieve» method.Valid proposals are taken into account, and «half» are rejected.Therefore, the very first author’s concept boils down to the fact that when reforming the legislation on executive proceedings, the chaotic creation of several draft laws should be stopped without a broad andpublic discussion of ideas and hypotheses, elimination of shortcomings, and only after that, the draft bill should be submitted for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.The authors analyzed the remarks of the Main Scientific Expert Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Draft Law No. 5660 and expressed the author’s justified opinion on some of them, in particular, regarding the expediency of adopting Draft Law No. 5660 in this version, which raises significant doubts, even in comparison with the versions of current laws and needs serious revision. But the main thing is to create a balance and establish in advance the conditions under which the state executive service will be able to compete with private contractors, in particular, by creating material conditions for public contractors so that they value their position.A brief analysis of the main principles of executive proceedings, which were borrowed without changes from the current Law of Ukraine «On Executive Proceedings», is provided.A conceptual conclusion was made about what should be said about promising directions for improving the relevant legislation in the context of the main principles of executive proceedings. It is quite obviousthat the Draft Law was not created successfully and does not fulfill the tasks that should have been set before the working group that worked on it.Analyzed the concepts of private executors – co-authors of Draft Law No. 5660 and proposed the author’s vision for the legislative regulation of quite important institutions, in particular, the place of openingexecutive proceedings, consolidated executive proceedings, executive sanctions, etc. But now the list of all the problematic issues that take place in Draft Law No. 5660 is not exhausted, because its authors needto eliminate 1,200 amendments that were submitted to it by the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.Therefore, the authors have raised questions for public discussion of this Draft Law No. 5660, because all of us, both scientists and practitioners, are working together to improve the legislation on executiveproceedings for the benefit of our native Ukraine.

Acute appendicitis (AA) is a common surgical diagnosis in patients presenting to the Emergency Department with acute abdominal pain. A wide variety of other clinical conditions can present with a very similar presentation to acute appendicitis and therefore it can be occasionally challenging to make the correct diagnosis. In this review paper, the focus is to shed some light on the differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis which includes a variety of gastrointestinal, vascular, urological, and gynaecological conditions. In the emergency setting there are three main imaging modalities to evaluate patients presenting with abdominal pain, this includes computed tomography (CT), ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The choice of imaging modality for each clinical condition is variable and as such being familiar with those differential diagnoses is vital in deciding what is the best imaging modality for every patient presenting with abdominal pain.

Abstract The law on disability in relation to the trial, or ‘unfitness to plead’ as it is more commonly known, has received scant attention in recent years.1 The last major review of this complex and neglected area of criminal law was in 1975 when the Committee on Mentally Abnormal Offenders,2 (known as the Butler Report) recommended sweeping reforms. However, as was recently pointed out by the Law Commission in its commentary on the Draft Criminal Code: some of the Committee’s procedural proposals were controversial. A consultative document issued by the Home Office in 1978 referred in particular to serious doubts as to the practicability of a recommendation that if the defendant is found to be under disability there should nevertheless be a ‘trial of the facts’-at once if there is no prospect of the defendant’s recovering, or as soon (during periods of adjournment not exceeding six months in total) as he may prove unresponsive to treatment.

This essay examines how subjective turmoil and social concern intersect in some roughly modernist-era representations of Christian faith and doubt. It begins by observing that the word ‘troubled’ can name either a condition of unease about oneself or a state of unease about others. It then examines how in writings by Mary Augusta Ward, T. S. Eliot, and James Baldwin, anxieties attending doubts about God’s existence are eased by certitude about the badness of social conditions whose amelioration offers a path to purpose in life. It considers, in other words, how in these writers, being-troubled in the second sense helps resolve crises of being-troubled in the first sense. The essay closes by showing how attention to this resolution complicates our understanding of modernism’s relation to theodicy, to realism, and to the location of value in what Martin Hägglund calls “this life.”

By surgeon’s perspective, complicated appendicitis is defined as perforated appendicitis, periappendicular abscess, gangrenous appendicitis or peritonitis, noted on radiological studies upon hospital admission, operative reports or pathology results of the surgical specimen. Despite that this clinical condition is truly common in everyday surgical routine, its causes and risk factors are still unclear. Some parameters have been associated with complicated appendicitis, like older age, type 2 diabetes, symptoms for longer duration, appendicoliths/fecaliths, delays in surgery after onset of symptoms and after admission. Furthermore, currently, there is no standard diagnostic algorithm for complicated appendicitis. To be specific, radiological findings lack sensitivity, intraoperative assessment may overestimate it while, histopathological examination is regarded as more specific diagnostic method. In addition, the optimal treatment for complicated appendicitis remains controversial between an immediate surgical operation (laparotomy/laparoscopy) or a trial of nonoperative management. Hereby, by reviewing the current literature, we would aim to clarify the risk factors and the diagnostic procedure of complicated appendicitis as well as to compare the operative management with the conservative one according to the type of complicated appendicitis, the success rate and the postoperative complications.

Abstract When technically specifying ships for the future, the following aspects are examples of what we will have even more focus on than today: bigger, lighter, and faster. Thereby, the hydro-elastic type of structural response will be more and more significant. In addition, some of the recent container ships’ designs are with very low values of the “minimum hogging still water bending moment.” Combined with high whipping induced sagging moments, it casts some doubts on the probability of buckling appearance in the upper structure. Therefore, the objective of the research work presented in this paper is to investigate the dynamic ultimate strength of the entire hull girder section, subjected to sagging bending moment associated with wave loads and whipping response. The dynamic ultimate strength is computed and compared with the quasi-static ultimate strength, in order to derive the dynamic load factors, which can be used as an estimator of the dynamic collapse effect.

All numerical models of friction damped bladed arrays require knowledge or information of contact-friction parameters, which are established either through direct frictional measurements, done with the help of single contact test arrangements, or by fine tuning the parameters in the numerical model and comparing the experimental response of damped blade against its computed response. Some critical assumptions are necessary to the purpose, such as the position and extension of the real contact areas and the values of local friction coefficients. In the light of recent results from direct measurements on under-platform dampers [1–3] it became evident that a dedicated routine for the damper mechanics is a much more effective tool to capture those finer details which are essential to an appropriate description of damper behaviour. This was made possible by the successful effort of the present authors to accurately measure the forces transmitted between the platforms through the damper and to relate them with the relative platform movement [2]. Simulations, and the matching experiments which are here not described, are performed under so called out-of-phase (O-O-P) and in-phase (I-P) condition simulating the two basically important motion types. Damper forces and damper kinematics are discussed for two highly representative cases in the low frequency range. Diagrams are then used to show the sensitivity to contact parameters, input motion and initial conditions on damper behaviour, casting heavy doubts on the validity of oversimplified practices.

The robust design of a novel mobile robot, which comprises two driving wheels and an intermediate body carrying the payload, is the subject of this paper. We prove that, by virtue of the robot architecture, the kinetostatic model of the system is isotropic. Moreover, regarding the robot dynamic response, a robust design problem is formulated by minimizing the design bandwidth of the generalized inertia matrix of the robot over its architecture parameters. Furthermore, design conditions are given for the robot performance in trajectory-tracking to be feasible. Finally, a numerical comparison of two design solutions, one feasible and one robust, is provided by means of simulation runs. We demonstrate that the robust design solution doubles robot performance in trajectory-tracking, while reducing the oscillations of the intermediate body, by 40%, when compared with the feasible solution.

The number of numerical studies predicting blood flow in intracranial aneurysms is rapidly increasing over the last years. Due to a high spatial as well as temporal resolution, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches offer a high potential to investigate flow interaction within the human vascular system. However, state-of-the-art methods still underlie several assumptions, e.g., rigid vessel walls, analytical boundary conditions or the consideration of blood as a single-phase continuous fluid. In consequence, the acceptance of CFD is still limited among a majority of physicians [1]. In order to overcome these reasonable doubts, simulations need to be validated via experiments. Therefore, two patient-specific intracranial aneurysms were measured by means of 7-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Afterwards, highly resolved numerical simulations were carried out and the peak-systolic velocity fields compared in a qualitative manner.

Problem of the inverted temperature profile in condensation has been discussed at length in kinetic theory. The possible occurrence of the inverted temperature profile raised serious doubts about the validity of the previous theory, because the result seemed physically unreasonable. In this study, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation with two facing surfaces of evaporation and condensation is carried out in order to obtain further evidence for the occurrence of the inverted temperature profile. Heat and mass transfer rates across the liquid-vapor interface during the condensation of argon are calculated for different nonequilibrium conditions given by changing the temperature of evaporating surface. From a view point of irreversible thermodynamics, the criteria for the inverted temperature profile are examined with the NEMD data and we have a conclusion that the inverted temperature profile may occur without contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics. In addition, we found that the molecular reflection at the condensing surface has an important role in the inverted temperature phenomenon. The reflected molecules do not accommodate with the condensing surface so that those molecules raise the temperature in the vicinity of the condensing surface under the nonequilibrium conditions.

Electro-active polymers like poly(vinylidene fluoride) — PVDF and their copolymers, have been emerging as a low cost substitutes for piezoelectric ceramics. Carbon nanotubes with their excellent physical and electronic properties can be used in these electro-active polymers to enhance their actuation and sensing properties. In the work presented here, actuators and sensors have been fabricated using piezoelectric polymers reinforced with carbon nanotubes. Single-walled and multi-walled nanotubes are used to reinforce the piezoelectric polymers. The response of these actuators and sensors are measured and the influence of the fabrication methods on the sensor performance is determined. The use of these materials as actuators and sensors to implement active vibration control is studied. These transducers also serve as additional damping materials added to the structure undergoing vibration due to their viscous damping properties. The change in properties of these piezoelectric polymers with different fabrication conditions and nanotube addition, though provokes doubts about standardization, invokes more research efforts on these new generation transducers.

By the decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1975in the Budennovsk city, Stavropol Territory, the construction of the world's largest Prikumsk plastics factory (now Stavrolen LLC of the PJSC LUKOIL) began. The construction and operation of the factory was complicated by collapsible loessal soils of type II soil conditions and a subsequent increase in seismicity up to 8 points. Explosive objects of the plant, without validation of a design, were first designed on driven reinforced concrete non-sulfate-resistant piles in the amount of about 20 thousand pieces. Testing of experimental piles with soaking of pits led to their failure. After that, the piles were lengthened by 3 m, their doubles were additionally hammered and the grillages were strengthened. Long-term trouble-free operation of the plant has shown the reliability of the decisions made. The problem of seismic resistance of pile foundations in collapsible and watered loessial soils remains unresolved.

Unquestionably (or: undoubtedly), every competent speaker has already come to doubt with respect to the question of which form is correct or appropriate and should be used (in the standard language) when faced with two or more almost identical competing variants of words, word forms or sentence and phrase structure (e.g. German "Pizzas/Pizzen/Pizze" 'pizzas', Dutch "de drie mooiste/mooiste drie stranden" 'the three most beautiful/most beautiful three beaches', Swedish "större än jag/mig" 'taller than I/me'). Such linguistic uncertainties or "cases of doubt" (cf. i.a. Klein 2003, 2009, 2018; Müller & Szczepaniak 2017; Schmitt, Szczepaniak & Vieregge 2019; Stark 2019 as well as the useful collections of data of Duden vol. 9, Taaladvies.net, Språkriktighetsboken etc.) systematically occur also in native speakers and they do not necessarily coincide with the difficulties of second language learners. In present-day German, most grammatical uncertainties occur in the domains of inflection (nominal plural formation, genitive singular allomorphy of strong masc./neut. nouns, inflectional variation of weak masc. nouns, strong/weak adjectival inflection and comparison forms, strong/weak verb forms, perfect auxiliary selection) and word-formation (linking elements in compounds, separability of complex verbs). As for syntax, there are often doubts in connection with case choice (pseudo-partitive constructions, prepositional case government) and agreement (especially due to coordination or appositional structures). This contribution aims to present a contrastive approach to morphological and syntactic uncertainties in contemporary Germanic languages (mostly German, Dutch, and Swedish) in order to obtain a broader and more fine-grained typology of grammatical instabilities and their causes. As will be discussed, most doubts of competent speakers - a problem also for general linguistic theory - can be attributed to processes of language change in progress, to language or variety contact, to gaps and rule conflicts in the grammar of every language or to psycholinguistic conditions of language processing. Our main concerns will be the issues of which (kinds of) common or different critical areas there are within Germanic (and, on the other hand, in which areas there are no doubts), which of the established (cross-linguistically valid) explanatory approaches apply to which phenomena and, ultimately, the question whether the new data reveals further lines of explanation for the empirically observable (standard) variation.

As the use of higher strength and thicker walled pipe becomes more prevalent, the procedures that would normally guard against hydrogen cracking when welding with cellulosic electrodes, become less effective and it has become necessary to investigate the use of alternative low hydrogen consumables. Low hydrogen manual welding processes, suitable for pipeline girth welding, have been available for some time for the lower strength pipe grades, and latterly, for high strength pipelines (up to and including X80). Despite their availability and advantages in terms of reduced crack susceptibility, they have been rarely used in production up to the present time. Basic coated shielded metal arc (SMA) electrodes, suitable for vertical-down welding, are produced by some manufacturers at the strength level required for both the root welding and filling of pipeline girth welds. Self-shielded flux-cored wires (SSFCA) are also available for both root and fill welding, and in addition to the low hydrogen levels, these have the advantage of increased productivity. Both of these processes require different methods of deposition compared to welding using cellulosic electrodes, which necessitates specialized training of welders. It is thought that this, along with doubts concerning the reliability and speed of the processes in site conditions, has made contractors reluctant to adopt them. Furthermore, there was a dearth of independently produced information on the welding production performance of low hydrogen processes. The objectives of this work was to generate data to enable users to make an informed judgement regarding the practical application of low hydrogen processes. Furthermore, it was intended to develop improved root welding procedures, which had been recognized as being significant process limitation. A further objective of this work was to collect data to permit an informed choice when choosing low hydrogen welding processes for modern high-strength steel walled pipe. The performance of low hydrogen vertical down electrodes (L4VD) and solid and flux cored wires for welding X80 linepipe is assessed with regard to ease of welding, productivity and weldment mechanical properties in comparison to cellulosic electrodes.
